Congratulations to the Winners of the 2014 Bethpage Best of L.I. Competition! It is with great pride that I welcome you to the annual “Best of the Best” issue. The Bethpage Best of L.I. Awards program embodies the very essence of what makes Long Island so great: the enterprise, hard work and sheer determination of the small businesses driving our local economy and the countless families throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties who own, operate and support them. All of their efforts culminate in this yearly contest, and I am humbled to play a part in recognizing their efforts here within these pages. Now in its ninth year and counting, from our readers and nominees to the legions of voters, winners and sponsors, this unique awards program affords us all the opportunity to share in this worthy mission and celebrate in the impressive accomplishments of all of its participants. And they are tremendous accomplishments, indeed. As you turn the pages of this issue and the previous two (Part 1 and Part 2), I implore you to pay close attention to the details--the words, the photographs, the listings and advertisements. All three 2014 Bethpage Best of L.I. issues are the fruits of labor of our entire team at the Long Island Press, representing months of intense work required to bring to life the voting public’s choices for the best Long Island has to offer. And the utter volume of votes this year was simply astounding. We are pleased to announce that 2014 has been yet another recordbreaking year for voting. It is here, in the “Best of the Best,” where we breakdown the entire program, remove the categories, and let the total votes from all determine just who made this exclusive list. To most accurately reflect the category count increase, we’ve likewise increased the number of honorees, to the “Top 30” vote receivers. To give you an idea of the absolute magnitude of the number of votes cast in this year’s competition as compared with years past, 2013’s third- and fourth-place winners, two wellknown psychics, had nearly equally as many votes this time around yet did not even make the list in 2014. We know there’s technically nothing better than the “best.” Still, every year, when the Bethpage Best of L.I. results are calculated, we are amazed to see just how many “bests” there are on our shores. Every year, when the voting is all said and done, we look back at the winners, we scour the numbers, and we find what we call the “Best of the Best,” the top-vote-getters, not just in their own categories, but across the competition as a whole. Every year Long Islanders pick the nominee pool and everyone has an equal opportunity to be represented.
