We at the Long Island Press know there is only one way to determine what is truly the Best of L.I.—and it is the same way we have made that determination since the first year of this poll: We ask you to tell us. You vote. We tally. You decide. We tell the world. This is the seventh year of the Long Island Press’ Best of L.I. poll, and it’s also by far the biggest. We have added 79 new categories—now featuring a total of 362—and we had 1.2 million total votes cast (approximately 50 percent more votes than were cast in our 2011 poll)! It’s so big this year that we had to split our annual Best of L.I. issue into three issues. This week is Part 1, featuring winners in the categories of Automotive, Education, Health, Wellness & Beauty, Home & Garden, Pets, Services, and Shopping. Next week’s Part 2 will focus on Food & Drink, Sports & Activities, Restaurants, Nightlife & Spirits, Arts & Entertainment, and Clothing. Then, in our January 26 issue, we will present our annual Best of the Best winners, spotlighting the top 20 vote-getters in the entire contest, and our inaugural Best of LI Weddings results! Extraordinary measures were put in place to make sure your favorites were considered, and your votes counted. The first step was establishing a comprehensive nomination process, so that any company that does business on LI had an opportunity to be in the running. This nomination process was open to everyone, for two months, from July through August. The winners of our 2011 poll were automatically nominated again, so that they could defend their titles. The nominations were honed down to the top finalists in each category before the voting began. The survey was third-party administrated by UPickEm Contests. All votes were cast for the Best of L.I. honors through our website, www. longislandpress.com. The official

voting began on Oct. 1, and was open to everyone. Once the voting ended on Dec. 15, the results were added up. Again, we separated local and national winners. We gave local businesses first-, second- and third-place awards in each category. If a national chain was one of the three highest vote-getters in any individual category, that chain was noted on its own, as the first-place national winner, after the local winners. Be aware, of course, that what may be The Best to your neighbor may not be The Best to you—which is why we named at least three winners in every category. All these places got waves of support. All have patrons who care about them and continue to give them business. All have found homes and customer bases on Long Island. And all are viable candidates to earn your vote for the Best of L.I. in next year’s poll, and beyond. We recommend you try all of them, as they all represent the Best of L.I. Indeed, we hope you will use this as a guide, something to help you explore and find new favorites of your own. And when you find those favorites, send us some feedback; let us know. We hope you will keep this issue nearby all year round, return to it and reference it. Here at the Press, we’d like to give a well-deserved round of applause to Long Island Press Executive Vice President Felice Cantatore for the incredible efforts he offers every day in constructing, maintaining and building our Best of L.I. program. We’d also like to tip our caps to the businesses that went out of their way to promote themselves, to lobby their patrons for votes, who went to great lengths to prove to our readership that they are the best. But, most importantly, we have to give a standing ovation to our readers, who voted in such incredible numbers and made sure their voices were heard. You voted. We kept score. Now the results are in.

Santorum—partial score Republican candidate Rick Santorum funds his campaign by giving away his much-discussed V-neck sweater vests in exchange for a $100 campaign contribution. Because if you’re a Santorum contributor, it’s important to also announce that you have a crappy fashion sense, too!

Is this just some shady attempt to get us to buy a ton of Excedrin, NoDoz and Gas-X? Because if there’s no Percocet in those bottles, we’re gonna be steamed! Smoking—off target Nicotine-replacing gums and patches don’t help smokers who quit stay away from cigarettes in the long-term, according to a new study. Research firm IMS Health says nearly a third of their subjects relapsed after using nicotine replacement products. Finally, the excuse we’ve been waiting for to start smoking again! Fracking—off target The public comment period closes on a proposal to open upstate New York State to a controversial natural gas drilling practice known as High-Volume Hydraulic Fracturing, or fracking. Here’s our comment: It’s crazy and destructive and shortsighted, and we’re offering a big “eff you” to any politician who supports it! Oh, the comment period is already closed? Never mind!
Iran’s warmongers What’s up with Iran? A former Marine visiting his grandparents in Iran is accused of spying for the CIA and is sentenced to death in Tehran because he lent his name to a video game. And months ago a couple of back-packing Americans who accidentally strayed across the border were released from prison after spending two years in jail! Meanwhile, twice in one week, the U.S. Navy saves Iranians in trouble. “Without your help, we were dead,” the stricken boat owner told the crew of the Monomoy. And days before that sea rescue, Navy sailors had freed 13 Iranians held captive by Somali pirates for more than a month. But to Iran’s conservative hard-liners, whose figurehead is that wacko Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, this stuff is just “Hollywood” acting! They want to keep tensions high so they can suppress the growing reform movement and hold onto power in March’s parliamentary elections. They’ve badly screwed up the Iranian economy but instead they want to waste their money on nukes when they’ve got almost 10 percent of the world’s oil reserves. The saberrattling is a dangerous distraction. If Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz, it would drive up the price of oil and add more fuel to the world-wide recession. Nobody but the ruling party benefits from this mess. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, if you’re so obsessed with what Iranian women are wearing on the street, then try out for Project Runway. You’re fired.

2. STOP BY THE LEAKY LIFE BOAT: Let us refer you to the description on the Facebook page of this new local bar in Seaford (3603 Merrick Rd.): “For all of us tired of enduring the guidos and muscle heads, the yuppies and college kids, the internet juke boxes from hell, the 4 on the floor pounding beat of techno crap, beer pong and cover charges, obnoxious bar tenders, money hungry bar owners...paying city prices in LI bars, we have the answer...” Well, we’re sold! 3. YOUTUBE “CRAZY FAN ON THE FIELD AT LAMBEAU”: We’re not sure what the appeal is of running on a football field, especially if you plan to keep your clothes on the whole time. Lucky for us, a professional football player decided to make the stunt a little more entertaining for onlookers by tackling a 15-year-old fan who ran on Lambeau Field during the Packers/Lions game. The kid got tackled by Packers’ linebacker Brad Jones and then was escorted away by security.
4. CHECK OUT JUSTIN BIEBER’S NEW TATTOO: Adding to his tattoo collection of a seagull and Hebrew script of Jesus’ name on his rib cage, the Biebs put a much bigger batch of ink on the back of his leg. The 17-year-old teen idol got a portrait of Jesus’ face. Too much? You decide. 5. DOWNLOAD “WHERE’S MY WATER?” app: Swampy the Alligator lives under the city and is especially fond of cleanliness. Cranky and the other gators do not take kindly to Swampy’s eccentricities and conspire to sabotage Swampy’s water supply. Help Swampy by guiding water to his shower to fill up his tub, as he openly mocks you for taking too long. It’s the best $0.99 you’ll ever spend. We promise.
6. BUY YOUR 2012 EMPIRE PASSPORT: We know, we know. Winter has barely started. But somehow making the purchase that will ensure our free entry into beaches across Long Island gives us a warm, fuzzy feeling akin to sipping on a hot caramel macchiato. For $65 you’ll also get access to 178 state parks, 55 forest preserve areas, as well as to boatlaunch sites, arboretums and park preserves through March 31, 2013. Order online at www.oprhp.state.ny.us/EmpirePassport. And if you really want to get in the mood… 7. ATTEND A WINTER LUAU: Other than that brief snowfall in October, we haven’t seen much of winter on Long Island yet. But it’s getting colder and soon the flakes will be falling by the foot. Excited? Well, either way, take a short staycation on Jan. 13 at McFadden’s (Rockville Centre) for their second annual Winter Luau, where you can sip on $2 Mai Thais, Sex on the Beach and Coronas, and pretend it’s summer all night long. If you take it to the next level and throw on a grass shirt or Hawaiian shirt, they’ll even let you in free. 8. GIVE AWAY YOUR OLD SPORTS EQUIPMENT: In Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service, the LIVolunteer Center is collecting gently used sports equipment to benefit at-risk children from Jan. 16 to Jan. 21. They need new or gently used basketballs, soccer balls, footballs, tennis balls, tennis racquets, lacrosse balls and sticks. Donations will be accepted during regular store hours at the Commack, Farmingdale, Garden City and Lake Success Modell’s Sporting Goods locations. 9. GOOGLE “SERENITY TATTOO”: Not only is it a church, it’s a tattoo parlor. We kid you not. Perhaps inspired by Bieber’s recent religious tattoo expedition, a Michigan pastor has sent some shock waves through his congregation by opening up a tattoo parlor inside his church. Rev. Steve Bentley says he’s trying to reach out to those uncomfortable with a traditional house of worship. The shop is open every day— except Sunday. 10. WATCH YOUR BACK: Personally, the only Friday we’re afraid of is Black Friday, but for all you superstitious folk out there and friggatriskaidekaphobiacs (fear of Friday the 13th is known as “friggatriskaidekaphobia”), you may want to lock your doors, turn off the lights, and curl up in the fetal position because this Friday is…dun dun dunnn…the 13th! The Book Sinners & Saints: A Novel By Victoria Christopher Murray & ReShonda Tate Billingsley Victoria Christopher Murray has made Jasmine Cox Larson Bush infamous four times over with Sin and a Shame; Lady Jasmine; Too Little, Too Late; and Sins of the Mother. ReShonda Tate Billingsley’s Rachel Jackson Adams has frustrated and charmed readers in Let the Church Say Amen; Everybody Say Amen and Say Amen, Again. Now, for the first time the two bestselling, award-winning authors bring their favorite heroines together in Sinners & Saints: A Novel. Bush and Adams are not your typical First Ladies, but they’ve overcome their scandalous and drama-filled pasts to stand firmly by their husbands’ sides for the coveted position of president of the National Baptist Association. Each woman thinks her husband is perfect for the job. As Jasmine and Rachel’s husbands are both nominated, the scheming begins, and both women are back to their old ways. With their husbands as president, they will have more power, prestige, and money than they could have ever dreamed. The competition is on, and they will do anything and everything in their power to get their husbands the job. But just when the two ladies think they’re going to have to fight to the finish, a woman bigger, badder and more devious than either of them enters the picture to take on this match made in heaven. —Daphne Livingston ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

B-List B-Day Jodie “HOW RUDE!” Sweetin Jan. 19, 1982 Full House child star Jodie Sweetin, who was born on the cusp of the Capricorn and Aquarius signs, shares her birthday with such visionaries as Paul Cezanne and Edgar Allan Poe. Unfortunately little Stephanie Judith Tanner’s work didn’t have quite the same enduring legacy. Those born on the cusp— the first or last day of a sign—are unique in that they embody traits from both signs. Sweetin began life a true Capricorn—a hard, resilient achiever. But the Tanner middle child grew up a true Aquarian, a sign that leans toward extreme flights of genius or insanity. Sweetin fulfilled the latter category, becoming a meth addict and host of Pants-Off Dance-Off, while big sis DJ aka Candace Cameron grew up to be a rare welladjusted former child star. How rude!

Live Free and Die The highest office in the land is the only job where applicants are rewarded for the level of disdain they express for the position they seek. The greater the antipathy toward government, the better the candidate connects with voters; or so it seems given the tenor of the GOP primary season. The image of the self-loathing politician promising to shrink the role of government in our lives is as old as the nation itself and usually appears during woeful economic times such as these. Of course, what someone utters on the campaign trail is almost always a far cry from how he speaks upon ascending to the Oval Office. Watching the current slate of GOP-hopefuls repackage this timeless anti-government dogma while vying for the single most powerful job in government is as ironic as it is ridiculous, but it is not without precedent. Many of the Founding Fathers were highly suspicious of government and the competence of the men seeking to run it. To them, government was a necessary evil, which is why so many provisions were enacted during America’s youth to protect its citizens from tyranny. But even the Founding Fathers weren’t immune to the awesome and corrupting power that accompanies the presidency. One early example was John Adams, one of the staunchest proponents of the Bill of Rights and the author of the Massachusetts
Declaration of Rights, which included many of the Constitutional amendments we hold so dear today. It was Adams who cajoled a reluctant James Madison to introduce the Bill of Rights in Congress to protect citizens from encroachments on their liberty. Only a few years later, Madison was jolted from retirement to join with Thomas Jefferson against an emboldened President Adams, who had recently signed the Alien and Sedition Acts into law, thus allowing the federal
(every other GOP candidate including frontrunner Mitt Romney) routinely paint themselves as Jeffersonian state’s rights advocates. Paul, in particular, identifies strongly with the Kentucky and Virginia resolutions in spite of the fact that they were specific to the threat of the Alien and Sedition Acts and later were the primary separatist arguments upon which the Civil War was fought. While the larger field of candidates is likely incapable of discussing these measures in any thoughtful way, Paul has actually made a career arguing that these resolutions are somehow as sacrosanct as the Constitution itself. He has even gone so far as to criticize their demise under President Abraham Lincoln and has called the Civil War a “major setback” due to the “undermining of the principle of sovereign states.” In a statement made on the floor of the House of Representatives in 2004,
promise. When it comes to dollars and cents, ideology cannot overcome fiscal reality. It’s one of the reasons why our economy is struggling so badly today. Believing that war somehow pays for itself and, even more magically, stimulates growth, the Bush administration chose to ignore history and embroil the nation in two costly wars while simultaneously cutting taxes to anemic levels. This type of disconnect is central to the Republican psychology of this presidential campaign and each candidate’s continued misinterpretation of the Founding Fathers. Adams was reacting to federalist fears triggered by watching the French Revolution turn ugly, and his paranoia was not without merit. But the totality of federal authority granted under these acts was so abhorrent to many of his contemporaries and fellow American revolutionaries it prompted the passage of the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions whereby these respective states unilaterally deemed the Alien and Sedition Acts unconstitutional. Now put this conflict into its proper current context. Libertarians such as Ron Paul, the second-place finisher in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, and free-market conservatives

Jerry’s Ink BY JERRY DELLA FEMINA Publisher, the Independent
The Sweet Revenge Of “Lady ****** Eyes” Want some good news? Last week a Papa John’s employee in New York City was fired after a customer tweeted a picture of her receipt, which included a racial slur. Why is it good news? Because in the future, Papa John’s will be a lot more careful before they allow some bigoted idiot to hide behind their name and work behind their counter. This only happened after Papa John’s received tens of thousands of calls by people outraged that Minhee Cho, the Asian woman who was buying a Papa John’s pizza, was identified on her receipt by a nasty ethnic slur. This is a great moment in the consumer protest movement. It’s a message a lot of our older readers might heed: Forget the phone. Learn to tweet. Get on Facebook. YouTube is your friend. And, most important, don’t let the bastards “voice mail” you into the ground. If you have tried to register a complaint on the phone with anyone in the last 30 years, you know what I mean. Try getting through to “consumer relations” at any major corporation in the United States. I maintain there isn’t a single real person working in consumer relations. There is only a voice in voice mail. When you call to register a complaint, you get led through the voice-mail maze, which goes something like this: “You have just been connected with the consumer-relations voice-mail system of Stonewall Unlimited. If you are slightly unhappy with our product, press 1. If you are quite unhappy, press 2. If you are fuming mad at us, press 3. If you are looking to rip someone’s head off, press 4.” So you press 4, and a new line of questions starts: “If you are planning to sue us for less than a million dollars, press 1 ...” How did it come to this? Whatever happened to: “The customer is always right”? The men who believed in that old adage have long since died and gone to corporate heaven. Back in the early 1900s, corporations were very often owned by men whose names were on the front of their factories or stores. Names like Edison, Macy, Chrysler,
Gimbel, Firestone. Many of them were scoundrels, but they took great pride in the products they made, they didn’t hide and they all shared the belief that the customer was king. Back in those days, it was not unusual for the head of a corporation to pick up the phone and personally field a complaint. If one called the Firestone Tire Company, they might have actually gotten Harvey S. himself, or at least his faithful secretary. With no “hold” button on the phone, the secretary would put her palm over the mouthpiece and whisper something like, “It’s a customer, and he sounds mad. He wants to speak to you, Mr. Firestone.” Can’t you just see Harvey Firestone picking up the phone in his Akron office and soothing the caller? I can just imagine what he’d say: “You’re on the Ohio Turnpike, and one of my tires blew on your car? Tell you the truth, we’ve been having that problem with our tires lately. Why don’t you come on by here, and we’ll replace it free. Hell, I’ll replace all your tires. When you get here, tell the guard at the desk to call me. I’ll come help you put the tires on, too.” By the 1950s, the Harvey Firestones of the world were by and large replaced by men who wouldn’t know one of their customers if they ran over him. These new men were faceless and nameless to the average customer, and that’s the way they wanted it to be. They hid behind improved phone technology that insulated them from the public. Now, with voice mail, an executive can hide from a dissatisfied customer forever. They changed the name of the complaint department to the consumer relations department. No complaint department? Voila! No complaints. Well, if you have a complaint today just remember this: There is no Papa John. He’s not in the kitchen making pizza. The name Papa John’s was probably picked by a computer. So if you have a complaint about his pizza, my advice is to learn to tweet, get on Facebook, and the guys who are hiding behind the Papa John’s name or any other company name will get the message.

By working with other organizations in diverse coalitions and through ongoing communication with local, state and federal elected officials and environmental and public health agencies, CCE has been successful in advancing programs that benefit the natural environment and public health.

Where the hell is bill? CRACKER/CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN @ HIGHLINE BALLROOM In what’s become an annual tradition, David Lowery swings through town with his two creative outlets. First with the stylistically quirky Camper Van Beethoven, and later with the more straightforward but no less intriguing Cracker, Lowery has always existed on the margins of the mainstream, with occasional bouts of commercial success allowing his bands to continue touring and recording. The evening’s set-lists will reflect the amount of plate-spinning Lowery has engaged in since CVB played its first show back in 1983. Not only can attendees expect to hear ’80s alt-rock gems (“Take the Skinheads Bowling,” “Where the Hell is Bill”) and twangier latter-day radio hits (“Get Off This,” “Euro-Trash Girl”), but Lowery will also be trotting out CVB’s first batch of new material in seven years. Every Day I’m shufflin’…To Get To Class On Time
the bell begins the class, shouldn’t the bell also then determine when the class is over? “I believe that this phrase was created by the ultimate control freak, and is used by those who worship that control freak today,” says Julia Quadrino, a junior at Smithtown East. It’s almost as if the teachers are trying to have power over the bell, and take superiority by holding us after it rings. But, there is one main problem in this scenario that seems to be disregarded in the mind of a teacher. Both students and teachers are entitled 40 minutes of each other’s time per period, no more, no less. The ringing of that bell signifies that
By Kristi Cerami
Whether it is certain remarks teachers make, incidents happening in the hallway, or just plain old stress, there’s always that one aspect of school that is bound to tick us off as students. But one major problem is how hard it is to get to certain classes on time, and what contributes to it. For starters, you’ve all heard the ever popular, “The bell doesn’t dismiss you, I do.” If you show up late to class, your teacher will generally say something along the lines of, “You have to be here, in your seat, and ready to work by the time that bell rings.” If
those 40 minutes are up, and it’s the next teacher’s turn to a full 40 minutes with each student. With the previous teacher holding us after the bell, that not only unjustly increases their time, but it simultaneously decreases the following teacher’s time. So, speaking only by teacher ethics, technically, the bell does dismiss us. “Whenever a teacher holds me after the bell, I’m late to my next class,
It’s almost as if the teachers are trying to have power over the bell, and take superiority by holding us after it. and then I get the same ‘You’re late’ schpiel from my next teacher. If you want to know who’s behind the whole ‘being late,’ it’s [the previous teacher’s] fault, so take it up with them. Not me. Everyday I’m shufflin’…to get to class on time,” says Quadrino…

Movie Reviews By Prairie Miller
JOYFUL NOISE
Warner Bros., Rated PG-13
If you’re starting to feel that the redstate-versus-blue-state hostilities have gotten as nasty as can be, you haven’t read the reviews stacking up for the gospel dramedy musical, Joyful Noise. Added to the usual dismissive chick-flick condescension that happens whenever the stars are older females who are neither objects of desire (My Week With Marilyn) nor pity (The Iron Lady) comes an undercurrent of gleeful scorn. In this case, that scorn targets American rural and heartland inclinations. Okay, so Joyful Noise—appropriately enough slated for release on the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday—is burdened with intermittent musical and emotional excesses, and its plot points veer into derivative rather than new and different territory. But writer/director Todd Graff (Camp, Bandslam) is not without a method to his musical madness because his kooky collage of clashing genres confound the film’s competing choirs. And, as everyone knows, the root of American music is gospel and by extension the blues.

In a movie that practically telegraphs its subversive ways from the start, Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah are G.G. Sparrow and Vi Rose Hill, respectively, rivals battling over control of a small-town Georgia choir. The competition starts after Sparrow’s choir-leader spouse (Kris Kristofferson) abruptly drops dead during a performance in the opening minutes of the film. But other exacerbating issues kick in that are far from joyful. The rural community is dying due to the current economic crisis. Town foreclosures are in full swing. The hard times fall especially on the shoulders of Vi, single mom to rebellious teen daughter Olivia (Keke Palmer) and a mentally disabled autistic son, Walter (Dexter Darden). She holds down two jobs as a waitress and a nursing home orderly to make ends meet. And then the most anticipated yearly event that can be counted on to lift the spirits of this doomed town, competing in a national gospel contest even if they always lose, is suddenly facing cancellation. That is, when the pastor of the church (Courtney B. Vance) tells the choir that they no longer have any money to participate. Though Joyful Noise sinks under the

weight of what may be termed the eighth deadly sin—an overcrowded playing field of colliding plots and excessively orchestrated musical numbers—it contains a generous heaping of soulful heart and good humor as well. It’s also a religiously themed movie that isn’t shy about challenging convention. And finally, nearly upstaging everything else that’s come before in Joyful Noise, is a cover of Billy Preston’s “That’s the Way” classic song performed by Ivan Kelley’s Our Lady of Perpetual Tears Youth Choir that, whether you’re red state or blue state, may take your breath away.
THE DIVIDE
Anchor Bay Entertainment, Unrated
Talk about cutting to the chase! The Divide opens with a nuclear blast essentially canceling out New York City entirely as the world is bombarded into oblivion for no particular reason. The frenzied residents of one tenement seek refuge in their dank cellar where the building super Mickey (Michael Biehn), a self-styled survivalist, is none too thrilled at hosting this sudden home invasion of unwelcome guests. And whether each tenant had ever coughed up a few bucks for an annual Christmas tip for Mickey seems to be too little too late at this point. He’s not your typical cranky super, but also a paranoid loner who balks at any suggestion that he share his limited grub with the demanding herd who apparently are in the winding corridors of his underground hideaway for the long haul. “Entertainment” is the least likely word that might apply to The Divide, given its relentlessly grueling scenario. Initially diplomatic but increasingly despondent, the denizens populating this doomed dungeon begin to turn on their incorrigibly misanthropic host and, as can be expected, against each other. The movie features Milo Ventimiglia and Michael Eklund as brazen bullies severing thumbs and cultivating sex slaves of both genders, and an unhinged Rosanna Arquette as a grieving mom who turns into a ferocious party animal before the party’s over forever. Then some government baddies inexplicably drop by in Hazmat attire, and hermetically seal up the cellar survivors for good. French director Xavier Gens (Hitman) injects tension and gloom into his story, but the survivors’ literal and figurative descent into despair lasts far too long in this bleak film drowning in its own jaded cynicism. What’s missing is any context shedding light on what exactly went wrong or who was responsible for the cataclysm. At least it would have provided some food for thought for this starving band. If nothing else, Gens’ fantastical warped vision of a world going up in digitally stylish smoke might have impressed the Mayans.
