Sound Smart at a Party An Illinois woman wins the “Mother of the Year” award after she allegedly took her 5-year-old son along on a bank robbery. Police say Lauri Ruble strapped

her son into his car seat and went inside Wauconda Community Bank to check out the tellers. After she came out, her boyfriend, Brandon Stancliff, went in armed with a kitchen knife and stole $4,800, authorities reported. The two were caught after police received a tip. Now child welfare officials are looking into the incident and deciding whether anything should be done. In the mom’s defense, it’s hard to find a reliable babysitter these days…

You may remember us mentioning the creation of a Steve Jobs figurine a few weeks ago. Well, that dream has

been crushed. In Icons, the Chinese firm that planned to produce a lifelike doll of Steve Jobs, announced that they have pulled the plug on the doll, which would have come with accessories, such as a little iPhone, Jobs’ trademark turtleneck and his New Balance sneakers.

The cancellation of the Jobs doll—set to sell for $99.99—comes after objections from his family and Apple lawyers. “We understand that this decision will cause many of the fans disappointment, but please forgive us as there is no other alternative unless to have the blessing from the Steve Jobs family,” In Icons posted on its website. An Indiana man who is clearly a fan of Hannibal Lector threatened to eat the police officers who arrested him for auto theft. Paul M. Brock allegedly stole

a car from a gas station. He reportedly said he would eat the cops, their entire families and their police dogs after they used the canines to subdue him. “I would buy what I thought was like an ecobrand and pay out the wazoo for it and then find out that it’s made with the same ingredients as any other brand, but the packaging is a little more biodegradable and you’re like: ‘But I care about the product touching my kid. was quoted as saying. “Tomorrow, it’s underwear. Where does it stop?” The initial idea for a ban came in response to a man in a group of pajama wearers who flashed his Johnson at a local Walmart. So what counts as pajamas? The commissioner says any item sold in the sleepwear section of department stores, which should be really easy to identify (note our sarcasm). He also suggests that pajama offenders do community service instead of jail time. Today, it’s pajama wearers getting out of jail time. Tomorrow, it’s murderers. Where does it stop?...

We at the Long Island Press know there is only one way to determine what is truly the Best of L.I.—and it is the same way we have made that determination since the first year of this poll: We ask you to tell us. You vote. We tally. You decide. We tell the world. This is the seventh year of the Long Island Press’ Best of L.I. poll, and it’s also by far the biggest. We have added 79 new categories—now featuring a total of 362—and we had 1.2 million total votes cast (approximately 50 percent more votes than were cast in our 2011 poll)! It’s so big this year that we had to split our annual Best of L.I. issue into three issues. This week is Part 2, featuring winners in the categories of Food & Drink, Sports & Activities, Restaurants, Nightlife & Spirits, Arts & Entertainment, and Clothing. Last week’s Part 1 focused on Automotive, Education, Health, Wellness & Beauty, Home & Garden, Pets, Services, and Shopping (those results can be found at longislandpress.com). Next week, we will present our annual Best of the Best winners, spotlighting the top 20 votegetters in the entire contest, and our inaugural Best of LI Weddings results! Extraordinary measures were put in place to make sure your favorites were considered, and your votes counted. The first step was establishing a comprehensive nomination process, so that any company that does business on LI had an opportunity to be in the running. This nomination process was open to everyone, for two months, from July through August. The winners of our 2011 poll were automatically nominated again, so that they could defend their titles. The nominations were honed down to the top finalists in each category before the voting began. The survey was third-party administrated by UPickEm Contests. All votes were cast for the Best of L.I. honors through our website, www. longislandpress.com. The official B e s t o f. l o n g i s l a n d p r e s s . c o m

voting began on Oct. 1, and was open to everyone. Once the voting ended on Dec. 15, the results were added up. Again, we separated local and national winners. We gave local businesses first-, second- and third-place awards in each category. If a national chain was one of the three highest vote-getters in any individual category, that chain was noted on its own, as the first-place national winner, after the local winners. Be aware, of course, that what may be The Best to your neighbor may not be The Best to you—which is why we named at least three winners in every category. All these places got waves of support. All have patrons who care about them and continue to give them business. All have found homes and customer bases on Long Island. And all are viable candidates to earn your vote for the Best of L.I. in next year’s poll, and beyond. We recommend you try all of them, as they all represent the Best of L.I. Indeed, we hope you will use this as a guide, something to help you explore and find new favorites of your own. And when you find those favorites, send us some feedback; let us know. We hope you will keep this issue nearby all year round, return to it and reference it. Here at the Press, we’d like to give a well-deserved round of applause to Long Island Press Executive Vice President Felice Cantatore for the incredible efforts he offers every day in constructing, maintaining and building our Best of L.I. program. We’d also like to tip our caps to the businesses that went out of their way to promote themselves, to lobby their patrons for votes, who went to great lengths to prove to our readership that they are the best. But, most importantly, we have to give a standing ovation to our readers, who voted in such incredible numbers and made sure their voices were heard. You voted. We kept score. Now the results are in.

Khadijah Baseer was spotted opening customers’ car doors on the drive-thru line, reportedly offering sexual favors in exchange for nuggets. Well, we’ve always said that stuff is as addictive as crack… Brian Williams—partial score The NBC Nightly News anchor slams Lana Del Rey’s Saturday Night Live performance in a private e-mail to Gawker, calling it “one of the worst outings in SNL history.” Gawker posts it on the Internet, sending NBC’s PR team into a frenzy. We’re assuming he meant relative to other musical performers. Because the comedy on that show has been unspeakably atrocious for decades! Headphones—off target Serious injuries involving headphone-wearing pedestrians have more than tripled since 2004, according to a study conducted by the University of Maryland. Researchers say 70 percent of those walkers hit by vehicles because they couldn’t hear horns and sirens die as a result of their injuries. That’s it. We’re going back to carrying around a boom box on our shoulder today.

Pink Slip Francesco Schettino Did Costa Concordia Captain Francesco Schettino really wreck his 10-story luxury cruise liner on the rocks off Tuscany just so he could toot his horn to a pal’s father in the harbor of Giglio island? That’s what Italian prosecutors accuse the 52-year-old Naples native of doing when he steered the 114,500-ton ship through a passage too narrow for a vessel that big. Thanks to Schettino’s hare-brained helmsmanship, 11 people have died, 24 are missing and one of Europe’s largest marine preserves could soon be contaminated by a half million gallons of fuel. The captain’s lawyer says his client is “saddened by the loss of life.” The authorities have charged him with manslaughter, shipwreck and abandoning ship. The Italian Coast Guard claim they found the Concordia skipper huddled in a lifeboat while presumably thousands of his panicky passengers were still on board. Schettino refused to return to the sinking ship and do his duty. Carnival’s Costa Cruises subsidiary shouldn’t have trusted Schettino with a rowboat, let alone a cruise ship. Mamma mia, who let this maniac on the bridge? Francesco Schettino...You’re fired.

B-List B-Day MISCHA “BUT I’M AN IT GIRL!” BARTON Jan. 24, 1986 Actress Mischa Barton, an Aquarius, is best known for her role as Marissa Cooper on The O.C. In 2003 she was named Entertainment Weekly’s “It Girl.” Aquarians are known for marching to their own beat, and when The O.C. went off the air in 2006, that’s exactly what this water-bearing sign did. After racking up a DUI and months of delinquent rent, Mischa was put on a psychiatric hold by doctors who felt she was a threat to herself and society at large. These days, you can find her on the Internet holding raw meat in a series of erotic photos, or in person, walking the streets of West Hollywood in hot pink leggings, leopard-print fur and unwashed hair, writing out plans for her next venture—a clothing line—in the morning dew of liquor store windows.

Why is it, that when a couple is married for 10 years or more, the wife decides she knows better than the husband about what’s best for him? It’s never the other way around. I would never tell my wife, the Beautiful Judy Licht, what to do, but she is always telling me what’s wrong with me, what to do about it, and how to live. What is it with women? They want to share everything. Judy’s doctor gives her calcium for bone density. She insists I need the same pill or my arms and legs are going to fall off. She goes on a fad diet where they deliver a black pouch to our front door containing incredibly expensive teeny weenie portions of food I wouldn’t give to our dog, Shlomo, and she insists I go on the same diet. She exercises with water aerobics and she wants me to do the same. I’m fighting back. I now wear a T-shirt that reads: EXERCISE HARD EAT RIGHT DIE ANYWAY Then, of course, Judy plays the “depression” card. Unless I’m smiling like an idiot every second of every minute of every hour of the day, Judy says, “You’re depressed.” “No, I’m not,” I answer with a smile. “Yes, you are,” she insists. “Is it age-related?” “OK, OK, you’re right,” I answer. “I’m depressed and it’s age-related. This morning I looked into the mirror and realized I have reached that age and stage where the hair in my nose is growing faster than the hair on my head.” She shook her head. “Making jokes like that is a sure sign that you’re depressed.” “But everything I do is a sure sign to you that I’m depressed. This is depressing me.” “See, I told you you were depressed. What’s depressing you? You can tell me.” “Newt Gingrich. He gives me the creeps. “I’m depressed that Barack Obama, who is tied with Jimmy Carter as the worst President in our nation’s history, is going to use class warfare to get easily re-elected. “I’m depressed that the Republicans are next going to run ‘The Three

Stooges’ Larry, Curly and Moe in their stupid ‘Anyone but Mitt Romney for President’ campaign. “I’m depressed because I’m sure that once he is re-elected, Obama will be pushing for Charles Rangel or Al Sharpton to head up the World Bank. “And as I said before, I’m mostly depressed over this long white hair that is growing wild in my nose even as we speak.” “You’re impossible,” she said and stormed off. I thought I handled Round One well until later that day. I was in our bedroom reading when Judy called out to me from another room in our house. “Jerry! Jerry!” “What? What?” I jumped up and out of bed because when Judy calls me she always has the same frenzied tone. Is she just going to tell me something that will amuse me? Or did she trip and is she dangling off the side of our staircase in danger of plunging four stories down and I should run as fast as I can to save her? “Jerry! Jerry!” she repeated again, with the same sound of urgency. “What? What?” I screamed. Then she said, “There’s a book I want you to read.” OK, it was about a book, so I realized she wasn’t in some kind of danger. “What?” I said, trying to hear her. “There’s a book I want you to read.” This was followed by silence. One minute went by—now another minute went by. “Judy! Judy!” I called out. I could hear her on her computer. “JUDY!!” I finally screamed. “What?” she said, annoyed at the sound of my voice interrupting her, as she had gone on to another subject. “Judy, you just told me there’s a book you want me to read, but you never told me the name of the book.” “Oh, yes,” she said. “There’s a book I want you to read. It’s called Driven to Distraction.” “Oh,” I said, “and what’s it about?” “It’s a book about A.D.D.” “Why do I have to read that?” “Because I think you have an attention deficit disorder.” I swear this is true; I can’t make this stuff up. She forgot mid-sentence to tell me the title of the book and went off to another subject, and she thinks I’m the one who has an attention deficit disorder. Finally something that truly depresses me. She wins again.

Fortune 52 Long Island Women making a Difference By Beverly Fortune

PALS Takes Flight Eileen Minogue Executive Director Patient AirLift Services

Peter DeGennaro was 28 years old and dying from terminal brain cancer. His last wish was to visit his grandfather who lived in New Jersey, but Peter was from Maine and was too sick to travel by car or board a commercial airline. How Peter got to fulfill his wish is an uplifting story that involves many selfless people who came together for Peter and stayed together to make other patients’ futures take flight. Joe Howley, a volunteer pilot from Greenwich, Conn., had been flying Peter between Bangor and Boston for his chemotherapy treatments and on their more than 20 flights together had formed a bond, so Joe volunteered to take Peter to see his grandfather.

A few days after his final flight home, Peter passed away. Joe honored him by memorializing Peter as Patient No. 1 for the organization that Joe had recently founded called Patient AirLift Services (PALS). Based in Farmingdale, PALS arranges free air transportation for people requiring medical care or other humanitarian assistance. Volunteer pilots not only donate their time and their aircraft, they pay for the jet fuel, landing fees and any other expenses, including hotels and meals. Since PALS’ inaugural flight in May 2010, their pilots have logged more than 700 flights. This year they hope to double that number, which would give PALS the distinction of being the fastest growing volunteer pilot organization in the U.S. Right now, they cover the Northeast and as far west and south as Ohio and Virginia.

Simply lovely.

When you find a solid piece of squid, stick with it. Steamed or fried and served with Vincent’s “World Famous” sauce, these tender, moist critters go down smooth and constitute a nearmeal themselves. There’s a reason Vincent’s won this category last year, too. The appetizer sets the tone for the meal to come, laying the foundation for the rest of the evening. Ringo Starr surely knew this as he sang, “I’d rather be under sea in an Octopus’ Garden with you.” He could have been singing about Vincent’s starter order, for sure.

RS Jones has been serving home-style Southwestern, Cajun-cooked cuisine to its satisfied customers since 1993, and as the No. 1 pick for Best Tex-Mex Restaurant on Long Island, there’s a reason it’s caught on with a growing clientele, who feel right at home on their range. Chef Carole Olkoski and co-owner Margaret Mueller have an equal passion for fun, comfortable, country dining. As they like to say, the food changes but the people stay the same. Maybe you’ll feel like doing the two-step after you eat some of their mighty-tasty chicken-fried steak.

The original Peter Luger’s in Brooklyn is celebrating their 125th year in business, but thankfully this steak house—truly a cut above the rest—has a Great Neck location for those looking to join in the celebration with one of their carefully selected USDA prime steaks dry aged on premises. The service is famously brusque, but not pretentiously so—it’s more like, who needs small talk when there is a feast at hand? Even more famous, of course, is that steak. And it’s true—there really is nothing else quite like it.

BEST BAR

1 The Leaky Lifeboat Inn

3603 Merrick Rd., Seaford. www.facebook. com/theleakylifeboat

Besides being possibly the best-named bar on Long Island, The Leaky Lifeboat is a new kind of venue with a full-service food menu, large bottled beer selection and a rock vibe. Put it this way, you won’t find the kids from Jersey Shore losing their undies here. In their own words, you also won’t find any “muscle heads,” “Internet juke boxes from hell,” or “the floor pounding beat of techno crap”. With a mission to bring the people of Long Island, who have been forced into places known for the above for way too long, a safe and fun alternative to the typical LI nightlife, The Leaky Lifeboat has invaded our shores—and Long Island is all the better for it.

This local cigar shop has a huge selection of cigars and a knowledgeable staff to help you with all of your smoke needs. And not only can you buy cigars here, you can relax in the lounge in the back and watch the game while you enjoy them. Come in the evening and you can even enjoy some top-shelf liquor. Now, that’s what we call full service.

2 Village Tobacconist

For the past 10 years, all of Blue Point Brewing’s beer has been made using imported, top quality malts and hops, lavishly added at three different stages throughout their brewing process. While this local gem is one of only a handful of breweries on Long Island, it has been ranked nationally as one of the fastest growing independent craft breweries in the U.S. for the past three years, a success they attribute to “good people and good beer.” Need more proof this place is the best? Blue Point is the proud recipient of a gold medal for their Toasted Lager from the World Beer Cup Awards, akin to the Olympics in the beer world.

Long Island has a lot of bars and, therefore, a lot of bartenders. Most are forgettable, but some have a little something special that keeps you coming back for more—and it’s not just because they’re pouring your drinks. At Shandon Court, not only is the food great, but heading over to the bar for drinks isn’t a chore—it’s like a visit with friends. Spend a little time here and you might even find yourself singing the Cheers theme song. Yes, it’s that good.

The beer selection at Croxley’s is simply, in the vernacular of Charlie Sheen, “winning.” From Fruit Beer to Angry Ales to Ciders and their famous Craft Beer Club, this place has it all, including 40 bottled beers, 60 ales and lagers on draught and even beer cocktails like Apple Pie and Shanty. After all, their motto is “drink outside the box.” And this is definitely the place to do it.

Best ALL-TIME ISLANDER

3 Adventure Cycle and Sports

222 Main St., Farmingdale. 516-7552453. www.gorideabike.com

1 BobBY Nystrom

Bobby Nystrom took the NY Islanders by storm when he joined the team in 1972. He is best remembered for scoring the winning goal at the 7:11 mark of overtime to win the Islanders the 1980 Stanley Cup title—the first of four straight championships for the club. For the second year in a row, Nystrom tops our list. Nystrom embraced the local community, contributing to various charities and promoting local businesses. Because of this, and that not-too-shabby goal of his, Nystrom became known as “Mr. Islander.” Mr. Islander had his No. 23 jersey retired by the Islanders in 1995. He is also a member of the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

The annual Oyster Fest in downtown Oyster Bay is more than just an excuse to indulge in some fried oysters, clam chowder and sea scallops. It’s a historical pilgrimage to the days when Long Island’s biggest export was fish, not college students. Trips down memory lane abound between all the live music, crafts and entertainment celebrating the hamlet’s eponymous shellfishery. But the original cultural crown jewel of Long Island’s SoHo is this nearly centuryold museum of art. For those in the market for something more ambitious, DiMonti can create custom murals for commercial or residential clients.

The self-described 9,647th biggest name in show business tirelessly worked the seedy underworld of Long Island’s comedy club scene the past 17 years to rally enough laughs that our readers voted him the region’s top funnyman. The only thing that could make this venue better would be if it were warm enough all year long to keep booking concerts at Jones Beach Theater in the off-season, not just summertime. But we wouldn’t want to have it enclosed and give up the perfect sunset views over Zach’s Bay as we watch some of our favorite bands take the stage at this unique open-air venue. We’ve made so many memories here, well, we can’t remember them all!

This is only one of a handful of nonprofit performance arts venues across Long Island that had been restored to reclaim their deep roots as an oasis of downtown high culture. It’s no surprise that Long Island’s most prolific novelist made it to the top of this list. Having such cache beyond the region is no easy feat in the literature world today. But his reliance on local inspiration for such thrillers as “Plum Island,” “Gold Coast” and “Night Fall” has cemented his reputation as a hometown hero.
