Sound Smart at a Party A 33-year-old man from Tennessee is asking the state to give him a break from his child support payments because he has

It’s a known fact that parking in Manhattan stinks, but how much

would you pay for your own exclusive spot? A private parking garage in Greenwich Village is offering a parking space for $1 million this fall. The New York Post dubbed the eightstory garage “the city’s gaudiest.” Part of it will be converted into six new luxury condominiums with a penthouse going for just under $39 million. But in order to park there, residents will still need a separate deed and sales contract. In addition to paying the $1 million for the space, there are also “maintenance fees.” The Post calculated that a person would

a minimum-wage job and is struggling to make ends meet. Oh, we almost forgot one minor detail. Desmond Hatchett has 30 children with 11 different women. The state currently requires him to divide half of his earnings among the 11 women, meaning that some receive as little as $1.49 a month. He told Volunteer TV in 2009, “I had four kids in the same year. Twice.” We recommend a mandatory neutering…

“I banned my entire entourage from coming with me. I stripped myself of being Kylie and wanted to go back to being as basic as possible and pretty much be a blank canvas for Leos.” —singer/actress Kylie Minogue on preparing for her role in Holy Motors, a new movie by French director Leos Carax. Here she’s at a press conference for it at the 65th international film festival, in Cannes, on May 23, 2012.

have to get a $115 parking ticket every single day for 24 years to equal the cost of the spot… A man in Washington was so fed up with a noisy group at a movie theater that he punched a 10-year-

old boy in the face. Yong Hyun Kim, 21, was watching Titanic in 3-D with his girlfriend when he asked the people behind them to quiet down and stop throwing popcorn at them. They laughed at him. “I got

so mad that it just happened,” Kim told police after they arrested them. He also told the cops he thought that the boy was a grown man. The short-tempered moviegoer could face three to nine months in jail if he is convicted with assault. The boy got a bloody nose and lost a tooth from the hit. Hopefully, it was a baby tooth… Come this July, travelers at three major tri-state airports will feel like they’re “Phil of the Future.”

JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports are installing life-size hologram avatars to provide information about connecting flights and where to find the bathroom. The units cost the Port Authority $180,000 for the six-month trial period. It also plans to hire 70 real people in an effort to improve customer service. Unfortunately, the avatars are not Tupac. How awesome would it be to get directions from the greatest rapper of all time? Just a suggestion…

LIRR—off target Retirees who faked disability claims to bump their pensions can avoid prosecution and keep their benefits if they admit their crime by July 6 under a deal with the federal government. Well, you know what they say: Don’t do the crime if you can’t admit to doing the crime in exchange for a light slap on the wrists!

Pastor Charles Worley The pattern is disgustingly familiar: A Southern pot-bellied preacher with a stomach full of venom and bile serves up a Sunday sermon that soils the soul. On Mother’s Day, Pastor Charles Worley of the Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, a little town in the middle of the Tar Heel State, delivered a doozy that’s gone viral ever since. First, he railed against President Obama: “I’ve never been as sick in my life of our president gettin’ up and saying it was all right for two women to marry or two men to marry...I was disappointed bad.” Then came the kicker, which makes folks wonder what kind of Christianity Worley practices in that “old-fashioned church” of his: “Build a great big, large fence—150 or 100 miles long—put all the lesbians in there, fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and homosexuals and have that fence electrified so they can’t get out...And in a few years they’ll die out. You know why? They can’t reproduce!” His final solution is most certainly not in the Good Book, and he should know that the verse in the New Testament is “love your enemies,” not stick them in concentration camps. The pastor may have his amen corner, but his extremist position drips poison from the pulpit. Worley, you sick man, go heal thyself...You’re fired.

Snooki—partial score Snooki announces she is having a baby boy and won’t be staying in the Jersey Shore house, just somewhere nearby since she doesn’t think it would be a good idea to be around her drunk roommates while she’s pregnant. She’s so right! Preggos are a total drag when you’re getting wasted and hooking up in the hot tub!

Reality TV—partial score Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver wins Dancing with the Stars, Arsenio Hall wins Celebrity Apprentice. Just so we’re clear: the words “star” and “celebrity”…they’re kind of like gibberish now, right? IBM—off target The company blocks stored voice data that helps hone Apple’s voice assistant Siri on its private networks, fearing sensitive information could end up in the wrong hands. Um, IBM, have you ever used Siri? Even if it had any sensitive information to reveal, it would only suggest you do a Google search to find it! Cheating—off target Allegations of cheating at two of NYC’s highest-performing public schools emerge, after two Brooklyn teachers notice students who scored in the 99th percentile last year dropping down to the 30th percentile this year. Man, it must suck to be those kids who allegedly cheated their way to a 99th percentile score! Like, they totally would have gotten away with it…if only those new kids hadn’t been so bad at cheating! Shakeel Afridi—bull’s eye The U.S. seeks the release of the Pakistani doctor who helped the CIA find Osama Bin Laden. Pakistan sentenced Afridi to 33 years in prison this week for treason. Treasonous because he helped rid the world of one of its most deplorable terrorists and murderers? Just so we’re clear: the word “treason”…that’s kind of like gibberish now, right?

The Quote “To determine whether lethal injection executions are fairly and humanely administered, or whether they ever can be, citizens must have reliable information about the ‘initial procedures’ which are invasive, possibly painful and may give rise to serious complications.” —California Judge Raymond Fisher of the unanimous three-judge panel writing in the 2000 ruling that declared keeping reporters and the public from viewing all aspects of executions was an unconstitutional violation. This week, the Associated Press and 16 other organizations sued the state of Idaho, one of five states that shield part of their executions, to force officials to open them entirely to public view.

The Rundown

1. WATCH THE GREAT GATSBY TRAILER: A little bit of Long Island hits the big screen this Christmas featuring a very Gatsby-like soundtrack, which includes a Jay-Z and Kanye West collaboration…Yeah. Anyhoo, it may be worth checking out the movie, or at least the trailer, for that alone. Put it this way, this Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) isn’t the Gatsby you read about in seventh grade English Lit.

2. MAKE YOUR OWN BATMAN CHUCK TAYLORS: Choose from an array of endless bat-combinations and bat-possibilities! Converse Chuck Taylor’s are now available in four different character patterns, which include Batman, The Riddler, Catwoman and The Joker. The design-yourown process offers thousands of customization options including everything from shoelaces and stitching to ID tags.

3. LISTEN TO BOB DYLAN: The man, the myth, the legend Bob Dylan celebrates his 71st birthday on May 24. Labeled as a leading figure of social unrest movements throughout the 1960s, Dylan’s career has spanned the last five decades and become a key part of American pop culture. Dylan wrote countless classics including “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times are a Changin’.” For all you kids saying “Who?,” we’re crying inside. 4. SUBMIT YOUR YETI EVIDENCE: Have you seen Bigfoot? Well, the staff at Oxford University believes you, and they’re trying to prove all naysayers wrong. Oxford, in working with the Lausanne Museum of Zoology, is encouraging any person or organization to submit any yeti evidence they have for testing. All you need is some basic information about your sample (what it is, where you got it, etc.). Once the strongest evidence is received, it will be submitted for more rigorous testing. So round up your cement footprints and hairballs, and help Oxford settle one of the biggest mysteries in the world. 5. PICK UP TEN STORIES: Philadelphia quartet mewithoutyou is back with their fifth studio album, Ten Stories. Tackling the “concept record,” mewithoutyou treats fans with new and old tricks throughout 11 tracks. Creative lyricism, catchy hooks, and a curiosity that’ll keep you coming back, Ten Stories delivers the goods. Mewithoutyou offers a lot over the course of Ten Stories, all of which is sure to overcome the reluctance of longtime fans and the hardened cynicism of new listeners.

6. LOOK AT FOOD PORN: Food lovers everywhere rejoice! Thanks to the social networking blog site, Tumblr, you can now visually indulge in the most scintillating foods. Head over to sexiestfoods.tumblr.com to check out the finest cuisines, ranging from sandwich oddities to delicious cookie combinations. Whether you want to quench your ocular pallet, or get inspired to consume some wacky foods, this is one webpage you should definitely check out. Your tongue and stomach will thank your eyes. 7. PICK UP MARVEL COMICS’ ASTONISHING X-MEN #50: With our current president now standing behind the highly debated topic of gay marriage, Marvel Comics has moved one of their main titles to tackle the issue. Astonishing X-Men features the character Northstar, who is openly gay. In issue No. 50, the character is set to get married, making this the first gay marriage for the company and any of its cartoon characters. 8. YOUTUBE “ANCHORMAN 2 TRAILER”: After years of production difficulties, it seems audiences will finally see the sequel come to light in 2013. Headed by Will Farrell’s anchor, Ron Burgundy, Anchorman 2 features the entire cast, with heavy hitters such as Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner. The teaser doesn’t offer up any plot details, but it showcases a familiar dynamic between the Channel 4 news team. So stay classy and check out this trailer. 9. DON’T LET TECHNOLOGY TAX YOU: In an age where every new piece of technology seems revolutionary, it’s hard for consumers to determine what is really worth it. What’s even harder is skimming through the barrage of services these tech companies offer. Well, Gizmodo.com,, along with Laptop magazine, is looking to make your life easier with a list of tech services to avoid. From Rent-to-Own services, to “speed up my PC” services, this list hits the highlights of what consumers should not waste their time or money on. 10. WEAR YOUR POPPIES!: This holiday weekend means parades, the Bethpage Federal Credit Union Air Show at Jones Beach, summer blockbusters, BBQs and plenty of other fun. But, among all the fun and celebration, make sure to honor all those who served our country and wear those poppies proudly! News

The Book Dreamless By Josephine Angelini The sequel to Josephine Angelini’s internationalbestselling novel, Starcrossed, suspensefilled Dreamless follows the story of teenaged star-crossed lovers descended from the Greek gods. Angelini uses mythology to imagine what might happen if these descendants, whom she calls Scions, were pitted against one another in order to settle an ancient blood feud that reaches all the way back to the Trojan War. In Starcrossed, 17-year-old Helen knows there’s something different about her, and when the breathtakingly-handsome Lucas Delos shows up at school, Helen can’t resist trying to kill him. As Helen learns who and what she really is—a Scion—she and Lucas struggle to overcome what the Fates have in store for them. That’s where Dreamless picks up. In the second part of the planned trilogy, Helen risks her life in Hades’ underworld, where she meets Orion, another teenaged demigod. Together they attempt to stop the cycle of revenge that has gripped the Scions for millennia, while back on Nantucket Island, she and Lucas struggle to stay apart in order to avoid triggering a catastrophic war. A pulse-pounding love triangle emerges, delivering a gritty, actionpacked and empowering drama, as Helen fights to find love and defy fate. —Daphne Livingston

The Brendan & Liam Shanahan Foundation Jennifer Shanahan

Co-Founder The Brendan and Liam Shanahan Foundation

The night Jen and Mike Shanahan moved into their new home in Wantagh on December 1, 2004, their 8-month old son, Brendan, wouldn’t stop crying. He was so inconsolable they had to take him to Winthrop-University Hospital’s Emergency Room. Brendan eventually calmed down and the doctors couldn’t find any reason to admit him. As they were about to discharge him, Brendan’s head twitched to the side and he began to have a seizure. The medical staff whisked him away to the pediatric intensive care unit where they placed him in an induced coma and then transferred him to NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan. Once there, Brendan underwent three surgeries, but he began to have seizures on the other side of his brain. Sadly, the doctors told the Shanahans they could do nothing more to help him and he should be taken home and made comfortable. Brendan was taken off life support four days before his first birthday. He died peacefully in his parents’ arms. No diagnosis was given for his death. Devastated by their loss, Jen and Mike decided they wanted to establish a foundation in Brendan’s name to help other families both financially and emotionally. In November 2005, they welcomed their second son, Tyler. Jen, a kindergarden teacher, decided to stop working so she could be with Tyler full time. Two years later, on Sept. 12, 2007, Jen and Mike happily greeted their third son, Liam. “Liam was the opposite of Brendan,” Jen recalls. He was crawling, sitting and talking like any healthy baby. “He made every milestone.” Jen and Mike began planning Liam’s christening. After taking Liam to a professional photographer for his christening pictures, she put Liam, then 10

8 months, down for a nap. When he woke up, Jen saw that his arm began to twitch. She realized that he was having a seizure and rushed him to Winthrop Hospital. This time Liam was airlifted to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where, after a battery of tests, the doctors determined that Liam had Alpers’ disease, a fatal mitochondrial disorder. When she heard Liam’s diagnosis, Jen thought, “I am not going to survive this. “You want answers, but you don’t expect to get the answers that I got,” Jen says. “You have a better chance of hitting the Lottery than having a child with Alpers.” Liam stayed more than two months at CHOP. “We never left the room,” Jen says. She spent the time at Liam’s bedside making arts and crafts and scrapbooks. After a child passes away, the hospital customarily makes a mold of the child’s hands as a keepsake for the parents. Jen wanted Liam’s molds made while he was still alive. The entire Shanahan family are Giants fans, and Mike watched every game with Liam in his arms, calling him his “Lucky Charm”. After the Giants won the Superbowl, Jen made a mold of Liam’s and Tyler’s hands together on a Giants plaque that read: “Tyler & Liam, Brothers Forever.” The doctors at Children’s Hospital told the Shanahans that Liam would most likely die before his first birthday but Jen would have none of that, “My goal was that Liam was going to make it to his first birthday,” she says. Jen planned Liam’s birthday party

When the birthday cake came, Jen says, “Liam opened his eyes wide while we sang ‘happy birthday.’” It was a milestone the doctors predicted Liam would never reach. “He made it,” Jen says proudly. But Liam never opened his eyes again. He was admitted to the hospital the next day, and passed away 13 days later on Sept. 25, 2008. Because of Liam’s fatal illness, Brendan’s stem cells were subsequently tested, and he was also found to have Alpers’ disease. The non-profit that Jen and Mike had started in Brendan’s name became the Brendan and Liam Shanahan Foundation, which assists other families whose children are critically or terminally ill. “We’re putting ourselves out there

Tyler, now 6 years old, helps Jen and Mike with the foundation as much as he can. “Tyler is my rock,” Jen says with pride. The family still celebrates Brendan’s and Liam’s birthdays with Tyler, Dylan and Gabriella. “I want them to remember their brothers,” she says. Jerry’s Ink BY JERRY DELLA FEMINA, Publisher, the Independent

Summer Lament, Or The Della Femina Curse I publish this column every year as a public service to make sure your friends and relatives will think twice before they send you an invitation that will screw you out of a precious summer weekend.

WHY DO THEY DO IT? It’s already started. Some close friends of mine are having their Memorial Day weekend spoiled because some heartless fiend has scheduled her college graduation party in some God-forsaken town in Pennsylvania. So after four years in a fine college what has this dopey graduate learned? Nothing. She still thinks her relatives would rather spend a Memorial Day Saturday with her than having a great weekend in the Hamptons. Why do our friends and relatives destroy the summer for us? Why can’t they get married in February? Why do they choose the middle of summer to have birthdays, anniversaries, Bar Mitzvahs, family, college, high school and even nursery school reunions? That’s not all. Frankly, some of them are

thoughtless enough to die on a Friday in June, July or August, and there goes another summer weekend. I promise that if it’s possible, when it’s time for me to go, I will go on life support until some rainy Friday morning in January so that my mourners can bury me early in the morning and still enjoy a three-day weekend. That’s the kind of generous guy I am. Now I know you’re wondering what I’m ranting about, since Memorial Day weekend is here and you’re on top of the world because it looks like another endless summer ahead. Let’s just see how endless it really is. If you work Monday to Friday like me, that leaves you with around 13 summer Saturdays and Sundays, plus two long holiday weekends. So from the minute you’re reading this, summer weekends are a total of about 32 days. Now you know that at least 9 or 10 of these days will be cold, rainy days where no matter how hard you try to avoid it you’ll end up arguing with your spouse. So write off 10 miserable days to

weather and you’re left with 22 days. Sound like a lot? I bet everyone reading this already has one lost weekend coming up when your Aunt Matilda is celebrating her 60th wedding anniversary and she and your Uncle Benny would be broken-hearted if you don’t show up on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to their house in Brooklyn or the Bronx or Westchester or wherever the hell they live. So, now you’re down to 21 days. If you’re young enough to have children, that means you’re stuck with a trip to some summer camp in Maine or Massachusetts, in the middle of what always turns out to be the most beautiful weather weekend of the summer. This is where you are sentenced to spend the weekend admiring neatly made bunk beds and ceramic ashtrays. Show me a camp that is wise enough to schedule parents’ visiting days on a Monday and Tuesday and I will show you a camp that deserves the exorbitant amount of money they get to guard your kids for the summer. An amount of money, I might add, that is more than it took, a few short years ago, to cover the tuition that would get a child through four years of an Ivy League college. If your children are grown it’s even worse. They have children and all their children are having birthday parties

in July, where you will find yourself overcome by heat, surrounded by 20 sticky 5-year-olds playing musical chairs. What frosts me is the weather. Did you ever notice that every one of the weekends you have to go to a family event is beautiful? The sun is shining. The sky is blue. And you are stuck in some disgusting catering hall, or, worse, drinking warm white wine out of a plastic cup in some relative’s backyard in White Plains. Which brings me to summer weddings in the city. They must be banned. Jerry Seinfeld, an East Hampton resident, had a message for all the newly engaged couples: “Nobody wants to go to your wedding! We are not excited like you are.” Mr. Seinfeld is so, so right. The only people who must attend a summer wedding are the bride and groom, their respective parents, the best man and the maid of honor and maybe a priest or a rabbi. All the other guests are hostages. I remind every dewy-eyed couple in my family that in the summer it’s bad luck to get married any place west of Westhampton. I remind them of the famous Della Femina curse, which is still going strong. I have, in my life, attended four weddings on a summer holiday weekend and must report, in all honesty, that not one of these couples is still married. Pass the word: marriages of people who screw up my holiday weekends are doomed.

Ah, Memorial Day, the most official—yet, unofficial—beginning to summer we have. You can start wearing white again, switch to flip flops and start drinking iced coffee. Marvel opens in Point Lookout. Adventureland and Splish Splash power up. Schools let out. Beaches fill up and Long Island, well, it’s simply the place to be. Lucky for us we live here and, this year, had a winter that never really was. Snow—what’s that? Compared to 2011, when we had a snowstorm every other week, this winter was cake. And we spent all those 60-degree days in February sitting on a lounge chair in the backyard waiting for snow and planning exactly what we would do once our Island officially opened for the summer. So, since it’s nearly June now, we’re going to go out on a limb and declare that the nice weather is finally here to stay. And just to make it official, we’ll give you our summer to-do list. From cardboard boat races to boy bands, the Blue Angels to strawberries in all their glorious forms, street fairs to reality stars, we’ve got it all here for your reading and planning pleasure. But, we can’t do it all. Now it’s up to you to decide what you’re going to say in September when someone asks you, “Hey, what did you do this summer?”

Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival @ Flushing Meadows Park, Based on the legend of Qu Yuan, an exiled Court Minister who wandered around writing poetry, Dragon Boat racing goes back centuries. When Yuan heard his home had been invaded, he drowned himself in the river. Fishermen raced to save him, but couldn’t. To prevent his body from being eaten, they threw rice dumplings into the water as an offering to his spirit. Today, rice dumplings are eaten during this festival of dance, martial arts, street theater and racing. Also 8.5. Broken Heart Syndrome, What Is It Really? Loss of a loved one, winning the lottery, losing a job, all are situations that cause extreme stress and may break your heart, literally. Broken Heart Syndrome is a temporary heart condition brought on by sudden stress. The symptoms including chest pain, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat and generalized weakness, as per founder of Heart and Health Dr. David Kavesteen. Any long-lasting chest pain, a very rapid or irregular heartbeat, or shortness of breath after a stressful event should be taken seriously as they could also be signs of a heart attack. Anyone experiencing those symptoms needs to call 911 or get emergency medical assistance immediately. What causes broken heart syndrome? Dr. Kavesteen believes that the surge of stress hormones, such as adrenaline plays a major role. 30

These hormones will increase blood pressure increasing your heart rate, which could induce fatal arrhythmia and cause sudden cardiac death. A short term squeezing of the arteries (arterial spasm) of the heart may play a role. Broken heart syndrome is different from a heart attack. Heart attacks are caused by a complete blockage of an artery. In broken heart syndrome, the arteries are not blocked, although blood flow may be temporarily reduced. It appears that most people who have broken heart syndrome are women 50 or older. Rarely is broken heart syndrome fatal. However, complications can include: Disruptions in heartbeat (increased or decreased heartbeat) or shortness of breath due to fluid backing up into lungs (pulmonary edema) .
