Sound Smart at a Party Here’s a delicious summer fact: A recent survey by the Water Quality & Health Council found that one in five adults admitted that they urinate in pools. Nearly 1,000 adults took part
in the survey, which was conducted in April and, according to public health experts, people let loose in the water because they were taught as children that chlorine gets rid of any germs. The sad truth is this is only true if the pool operators are able to maintain perfect chlorine and pH levels, and 54 percent of public pools tested by the WQHC last year were not up to snuff. Experts say this is because there is only so much urine chlorine can fight. And urine isn’t the only problem. Here’s another delicious fact: Seven out of 10 people don’t shower before they swim, and they bring sweat and traces of fecal matter to the pool party. Feces, urine, sweat. Not things we want to think about when we accidently swallow water while practicing our sidestroke…

As reality television becomes more and more prominent (aka you can’t turn on the TV without being inundated with it), a new type of mental illness is popping up, according to a new paper published in Cognitive Neuropsychiatry.
“After looking at the first game, I was like, ‘Man, they didn’t really get the moves right,’ so I was able to 100 percent give them accuracy through choreography from videos, as well as from my live performance.” —Usher on participating in the making of Xbox 360’s Dance Central He was on hand to perform “Scream” at the Xbox E3 media briefing in LA June 4. Psychologists are now seeing patients who believe their lives are being staged for a reality TV show. Sound familiar? That’s because it was the plot of the 1998 film The Truman Show, which is why the condition has been referred to as the Truman Show Delusion (TSD). The paper looks at five cases, where one patient believed the Sept. 11 Terror Attacks were made up “as part of his narrative” and that he had cameras in his eyes. Another man was actually working on the set of a reality show when he started to believe he was the star. While psychologists don’t blame the disorder solely on reality TV, they do believe these shows can interact with schizophrenia and create TSD. We always knew the Kardashians were trouble…

Letters to the press End Unfunded Mandates Dear Editor: Thank you for your coverage of the struggles both Suffolk and Nassau counties are experiencing with their budgets [“Cut Loose: A Look at Nassau and Suffolk County’s Layoff Casualties,” May 3]. Obviously, when municipalities face tough economic times there is always the risk of job elimination as a means of balancing the budget. What was not stated in your article is the fact that both counties must spend an enormous amount of money to satisfy the unfunded mandate of Medicaid costs. Last year alone, Nassau County spent $230.4 million to support Medicaid programs and nearly $500 million when you also add the costs associated with administering this program. Suffolk County spent $245 million on programs. These are programs that the counties have no choice in. They must fully support these by law as well as being mandated to include the optional services that many other states find unnecessary. I believe that if this state mandate was fully supported by state government neither county would have to lay off anyone. I understand and appreciate rightsizing government, which most residents support, but in order to properly tell the story, readers must have the full picture of information. Unfunded mandates are ridiculously expensive for municipalities and school districts alike. I have joined with my colleagues in the Assembly to sponsor legislation that would significantly decrease unfunded mandates and we hope that it would push the state to pick up the entire cost of programs that they force our municipalities to carry out. It is certainly right to care for the needy, but when it costs taxpayers
millions of dollars, something must be done. When this affects budgets so traumatically, we must end New York State’s practice of unfunded mandates. Sincerely, Assemb. Joseph Saladino (R-Massapequa) Happy Birthday(s) to Jerry Dear Editor: As soon as I read Jerry Della Femina’s question, “Why do (so many) people choose the middle of the summer to have birthdays...?,” I immediately researched the birthdays of all 300 million Americans, as well as 7 billion foreigners [“Summer Lament,” Jerry’s Ink, May 24]. I discovered that 75 million Americans and 1.75 billion “foreigners” have summer birthdays. I contacted them all (900 million of them through Facebook) and asked them all to invite Jerry to their next birthday party. To quote Jerry himself, “That’s the kind of generous guy I am.” I’m just hoping that Jerry sends me any of the cake and ice cream he doesn’t eat. Richard Siegelman Plainview

SUGAR—PARTIAL SCORE On the heels of Mayor Bloomberg’s latest proposal to ban super-sized sodas and sweet drinks in NYC, Disney announces the company will no longer allow fast foods or sugary cereal commercials on their radio stations or TV channels. Does this mean all the re-labeled McDonald’s food—Dino-Sized Double Cheeseburgers, Frontierland Fries, etc.—sold at Disney theme parks will also be canned? Probably not.
AL-LIBI—Bull’s eye Jihadist theologian and terror propagandist Abu Yahya al-Libi, who escaped U.S. custody in Afghanistan in 2005 and has had a $1 million bounty on his head ever since, is killed in a CIA drone strike in Pakistan and his death is confirmed by officials—after his previous two “confirmed” deaths were disproven. Hey, third time’s a charm!
Pot China
FACEBOOK, JR.—OFF TARGET The social networking giant, which bans children under the age of 13 from using the site, begins testing ways it could expand its audience to allow underage kids access to the community. In other words, kids shouldn’t watch commercials for Fruit Loops and Frosted Flakes because they are too easily influenced by Toucan Sam and Tony the Tiger, but throwing them into an anonymous international cyber pool of strangers is GRRRRRREAT! THE METS—Bull’s eye After more than a half century’s worth of games—8,020 to be exact— Johan Santana pitches the first no-hitter in New York Mets’ history in an 8-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Great, so does that mean that Mets fans no longer have to suffer through a life of amazin’-ly blown games, bad baseball and utter ineptitude? Probably not. POT—PARTIAL SCORE Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposes cutting the penalty for public possession of a small amount of marijuana from a criminal misdemeanor to a violation with a fine up to $100. Cuomo says the change would lessen unnecessary arrests and criminal charges that disproportionately affect minority youth. Might as well, jail is gonna be full with all those NYC outlaws trying to snag 20-ounce sodas. Got to make room! RX REGULATION—Bull’s eye New York officials announce a deal on legislation to require mandatory online reporting of prescriptions in real time as they’re filled by pharmacists, as opposed to the 45-day reporting window now in place, and require doctors to check a patient’s database history before prescribing painkillers. It’s about time.
The Pink Slip Luka Magnotta With all the media attention on zombies, vampires and teen werewolves, perhaps cannibals were feeling insecure. How else to explain the bizarre behavior of the so-called cannibal porn star, Luka Rocco Magnotta? His m.o. reads like a very gnarly pitch for a nauseating film treatment that would probably have blood-thirsty Hollywood producers “taking lunch” with him right now, if they weren’t afraid they’d end up on the menu themselves. Magnotta, a 29-year-old Canadian psychopath, reportedly posted videos of himself killing kittens with a vacuum cleaner, and was so pleased with the attention he got from Murdoch’s London Sun newspaper that he later boasted, in an e-mail: “I’ll be back—and this time the victims won’t be animals…I always win. I always hold the trump card and I will continue to make more movies.” Fat chance, fiend. The piece de resistance was an 11-minute video post of him dismembering and eating his former lover, Lin Jun, a too-trusting 33-year-old Chinese student studying computer science in Montreal. In promoting his mean feat, Magnotta was weirdly bipartisan: He mailed a hand to Canada’s Liberal Party and a foot to Canada’s Conservative Party. Magnotta left the torso in a suitcase outside his apartment before he fled to Europe. Fortunately, an international manhunt led cops to an Internet café in Berlin, where this sicko had been Googling himself. Luka Magnotta, you’ll never be “Top Chef.” You’re a recipe for disaster... You’re fired.
The Quote
“My first reaction was ‘This just can’t possibly be true.’”
CHINA—OFF TARGET In yet another violation of free speech, China bans searches for terms relating to the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, where hundreds of pro-democracy protesters were killed by the government. Jeez, next thing you know they’ll be dictating what size sodas people can drink! Oh wait…
—Award-winning Sesame Street composer Christopher Cerf to Al Jazeera regarding the new documentary, Songs of War, which suggests Guantanomo Bay detainees have been tortured using Sesame Street music playing on repeat for hours, sometimes days, in order to break their will.

1. MEET YOGI BERRA: The New York Yankees Hall of Famer will sign memorabilia at Steiner Sports Store in Roosevelt Field Mall at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 7. Berra was one of only four players to be named the Most Valuable Player of the American League three times and as a player, coach, or manager. He appeared in 21 World Series. Not too shabby, eh? For details visit www. steinersports.com.
2. BUY TIX FOR LACOSTE L!VE WILLIAMSBURG PARK CONCERT SERIES: The concert series opens June 15 with Jens Lekman of Montreal and features Counting Crows, Refused, Cake, Jane’s Addiction, My Morning Jacket, Sublime, Cypress Hill and more and closes with Goyte (“Somebody that I used to Know”) in September. Tickets go on sale June 8 at noon (at 10 a.m. for Gotye show) at Ticketmaster.com. Don’t miss out! 3. BUY A PRIDE T-SHIRT AT TARGET: Ten different T-shirts are for sale on Target’s website, featuring slogans like “Harmony,” “Pride” and “Love is Love,” all to raise money for a group working to defeat a gay marriage ban in Minnesota. Then head over to Huntington Village on June 9 for the annual GLBT Pride Parade & Festival. We can almost guarantee it will be your only chance this year to cheer on drag queens sprinting down Main Street in stilettos as part of the festival’s first-ever High Heel Race. 4. YOUTUBE “DEMANDING MONKEY HAS A BAD ITCH”: This video posted by Petsami takes adorable to a whole new level. A little girl petting a monkey’s head at the zoo tries to stop, only to have her hand pulled back again and again—and again. Follow that video up with “Petsami’s Top 5: Perpetual Pups” and you’ll pretty much be rendered useless for the rest of your work day. But watch it anyway.
5. LOOK UP “GUETAPENS” IN THE DICTIONARY: Back in the day, our stint in the annual elementary school spelling bee came to a screeching halt when we spelled the word chocolate “choc-ococo-late.” Not our proudest moment, but for 14-year-old Snigdha Nadipati of San Diego, crowned as the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion last week, “Guetapens” is the word she’ll be talking about 20 years from now because she spelled it right. What the hell does it mean? Look it up and get edjamucated.
6. ATTEND THE LI KOSHER BBQ CHAMPIONSHIP: Temple Beth Torah of Westbury will host the inaugural LI Kosher BBQ Championship on June 10 at 11 a.m., when teams will compete for Best Brisket, Best Ribs, Best Beans, Most Original Team Name and Best Booth Decoration. Stop by for good food, family fun and old-fashioned hospitality with events ranging from a pickle-eating contest to a basketball skills tournament to a Velcro climbing wall to live entertainment. You do not have to be Jewish or kosher to attend! But you may want to skip breakfast that morning… 7. WATCH THE DARK KNIGHT RISES TV SPOTS: Fans of 2008’s critical and commercial success, The Dark Knight, will pile into theaters July 20 for Christopher Nolan’s final bat-installment. Just to make sure, Warner Brothers has released its first wave of TV spots for the highly anticipated sequel. After releasing a trailer with Marvel’s The Avengers, Warner Brothers is making sure that every single person knows about their Bat-franchise’s final chapter. Head over to YouTube, check out bits of new footage, and eagerly await The Dark Knight Rises. 8. POST BAIL FOR MDA: Local business leaders head to “jail” on June 14, from 3 to 5 p.m. at K. Pacho in New Hyde Park in order to raise “bail” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Each jailbird raised $2,400 in the weeks leading up to the event. When they turn in their bail, they’ll get gourmet bread and water. To register as a Jailbird, contact MDA Executive Director Stacie Spitzkoff at 516-358-1012. 9. YOUTUBE “ALL 8 HARRY POTTER MOVIES—JUST THE SPELLS”: Inanimatus Conjurus!, Engorgio Skullus!, Cave Inimicum!, Aguamenti!, Alarte Ascendare!, Alohomora!, Diffindo!, Bombarda Maxima!, Vipera Evanesca! A fan compiled this montage of every single spell ever attempted in the Harry Potter franchise—all 17 minutes and 47 seconds of them… 10. WATCH THE BELMONT STAKES: The Belmont Stakes is Saturday and if I’ll Have Another wins the Triple Crown, you’ll probably want to be having dinner at Serata in Long Beach. Why? If you’re there for the win, and order before 6 p.m., the owners will rip up your dinner check! You only pay tax and tip... News

The Book The Guttenberg Bible, A Memoir By Steve Guttenberg From the actor who starred in such iconic blockbusters as Diner, Police Academy and Three Men and a Baby, The Guttenberg Bible is Steve Guttenberg’s hilarious, insightful memoir of the highs and lows of Hollywood and a man determined to make it there. In this honest, charming memoir, the Long Island native tells a Horatio Alger story of how he became the star of some of the ’80s most successful blockbusters. He spent his early days sneaking onto the Paramount lot (pretending to be Michael Eisner’s son) and meeting more celebrities and casting agents than most aspiring actors ever would. Even before the hit Police Academy (which his agent said would be a flop), he had already worked with everyone from Sir Laurence Olivier to Mickey Rourke. Perhaps it was his charisma or perhaps it was his dogged persistence, but his life was filled with unexpected run-ins and connections with dozens of Hollywood hit makers. His self-awareness and sense of humor about the ups and downs of fame make this a sympathetic and unguarded Hollywood story. —Daphne Livingston

SHIA “ALMOST DOESN’T COUNT” LABEOUf June 11, 1986 Shia LaBeouf is an actor best known for his roles in Holes and Transformers. He’s also directed rap videos, which may have satisfied his varietyis-the-spice-of-life Gemini tendencies, but didn’t do much to boost his time in the spotlight—the Hollywood spotlight, anyway. After refusing to leave a Walgreens in 2007, Shia was arrested. The charges were later dropped. In 2008, a warrant was issued for Shia’s arrest after he didn’t show in court over an unlawful smoking incident. The case was eventually settled. But Geminis are go-getters, and this particular one decided to up the ante in his quest for success by quickly getting his license suspended for drunk driving—then flashing his pearly whites for his mug shot.

East Meets West Linda Appelbaum Schneider, RN CCRN
Director of Adult Day Health Care Cold Spring Hills Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation
For more than 30 years Linda Schneider of Lido Beach has been a registered nurse specializing in critical care and management. Since she entered the nursing profession, she’s seen the traditional American family change from one full time worker to two, which in some cases means that their adult children with special needs or their elderly parents who were in
their care are increasingly being left home alone, living in isolation with little or no contact with their family or their community. A sad state for all involved. Linda, who is also an artist, took a break from nursing and bought an art gallery in 2006. She had to close its doors two years later because of the recession and found herself at a crossroads in her career. The only thing she was sure of was that she wanted to go back into the healthcare field. To help narrow her choice, Linda decided to write down what her ideal job would be. Her “job description” grew to be 132 pages long, and in 2010 she published it under the title: East Meets West, A Contrast in Medicine.

Men, we’ve been screwed. Or, to put it another way, we’ve been screwed because we haven’t been screwed. Back when we were in high school, having sex with a teacher was the stuff we were even afraid to fantasize about. Today it seems just about every 16-year-old boy going to school in NYC has had sex with a female teacher. Last week, Julie Warning, a beautiful Global Studies teacher, was allegedly caught making out in a park with her student, Eric Arty. Turns out he won a $400 bet among his friends as to who was going to be the first to bed (or as they used to say in my old neighborhood, “nail”) the 26-year-old teacher. Margaret Riordan, a Hunter science teacher, was caught having sex with a 16-year-old student and introducing him to “sexual positions,” according to a lawsuit by the boy’s mom. Last week Erin Sayar, a 36-yearold James Madison teacher, who is married, was accused of having sex with 16-year-old football star Kevin Eng during tutoring sessions in the classroom. James Madison is a hotbed of sex, and apparently there just aren’t enough 16-year-old boys to go around. A year or so ago, Alini Brito and Cindy Mauro, two female teachers, were reportedly caught in a naked embrace in a classroom at James Madison by a janitor. This is depressing to me and any man over 50. How did we miss out on all this teacher-student sex? The sexiest thing that ever happened to me at Lafayette High School was I once saw my buxom Earth Science teacher’s bra strap when her button popped. I hyperventilated and got so excited I almost had a heart attack. A few years ago on the 50th anniversary celebration of Lafayette High School, I was lucky enough to be one of the 10 graduates honored by the school. It was pretty “heady” company for me to be in. Larry King; Sandy Koufax, the greatest pitcher in history; Fred Wilpon, owner of the Mets, and actor Paul Servino were among the honorees. After we all made our speeches I was approached by a man who graduated
from Lafayette the same year I did. I’ll call him Goldstein. I liked Goldstein but I must say I always found him to be a bit self-centered, smug and cocky. We talked. “I’ve been to your restaurant in East Hampton and I love it,” he said. I beamed. “I see you being interviewed on television all the time,” he added. I smiled. After a time I asked him how he was doing. “Lost my job a few years ago— haven’t been able to connect with anything.” I was way ahead on points. I was embarrassed—I changed the subject. I brought up some of our old teachers. Then I mentioned the sexiest-looking teacher in the school, Miss Debarto (not her real name). Goldstein smiled. Miss Debarto was an English teacher who used to run one of those after-school clubs that, now that I think about it, was favored by members of the football team. “Miss Debarto? We all ****ed her,” smiled Goldstein. “You what?” “We all ****ed her.” Just then a big, bulky guy walked by. Goldstein shouted, “Hey, Nardico, tell Jerry about Miss Debarto.” Without missing a beat Nardico said, “I ****ed her in the audio-visual room. She took me to her house once.” That was it—Goldstein had won. He beat me. Forget my restaurant, my ad agency, my newspaper… forget Koufax’s Hall of Fame…forget Wilpon’s Mets…everything was meaningless. Goldstein had beaten us all when he was 16. Goldstein had ****ed Miss Debarto. That son-of-a-bitch. No wonder he was smug then. No wonder he’s smug now. My evening was ruined. I excused myself, turned on my heel and walked toward the dance floor where a lot of graying, middle-aged, slightly overweight men and women were dancing to the tune of “Teach Me Tonight.” I remembered the final words of the song: “One thing isn’t very clear my love, Teacher shouldn’t stand so near my love, Graduation’s almost here my love, You’d better teach me tonight.”

Stuart Rabinowitz Hofstra University President
James Dolan
As the president of the Island’s largest private college since 2001, Rabinowitz has brought Hofstra to international prominence by consistently raising the bar, both inside and outside the classroom. The university made academic history last year with the opening of its groundbreaking Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine— Nassau’s first allopathic medical school and the first in the New York Metropolitan area in nearly four decades—and its recently revamped School of Communication. Under Rabinowitz’s watchful eye, the university expanded its extracurriculars to include not only a star basketball team and an impressive summer performance schedule, but an October 2008 presidential debate and the only New York State gubernatorial debate in 2010. That Hofstra will be hosting another presidential debate this October in which now-President Barack Obama will face off in front of the nation from the Hofstra stage, this time around against Republican candidate Mitt Romney, elevates Rabinowitz this year to Number 1.
What Long Island sees, reads and even roots for has a lot to do with James Dolan. Thank goodness he got lucky with the New York Knickerbockers this NBA season because the outlook didn’t look too promising at first, when the team’s chances rested solely in Carmelo Anthony’s hands. But suddenly along came “Linsanity,” and for a couple of weeks everybody on LI was a Knicks fan again. Then the Rangers heated up the ice, and that was a thrilling NHL playoff run, the first one in years. Still, we’re left to wonder what News12 and Newsday would be like if they could give Dolan and Cablevision the coverage both Last Year: 1ST| Years: 6, 7, 8, 9 he and it deserve.

Money can’t buy happiness, but money in the hands of a man set on making a difference can definitely help spread some to others. Langone, of Sands Point—venture capitalist, investment banker, co-founder of The Home Depot and former chairman of the New York Stock Exchange—donates a substantial amount of his fortune to charitable organizations and missions he believes in, such as medical research, education and helping children. One estimate sums his charity work at more than $150 million—and that’s only what’s known. But Langone’s philanthropy is only one small part of what makes this big-hearted billionaire so powerful. The other is his work ethic, his drive. Langone is living testament to the tenacity and immortality of American Last Year: 8TH | Years: 9 entrepreneurship.

Scott Rechler and his Uniondale-based RXR Realty have not been idle since the last edition of the Power List. Last June, Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed him to the Board of Commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and by September, Rechler became vice-chairman. Last August, Rechler’s RXR made its largest move yet in Manhattan, with the $920 million acquisition of the iconic Starrett-Lehigh building, overlooking the Hudson River. Here on Long Island, Rechler’s RXR now has 6 million square feet of prime office space. Earlier this year RXR got approval to redevelop one of the most prominent waterfront sites in the Glen Isle project in Glen Cove. He’s one very busy man.

Moving Forward

Kirk Kordeleski
Seymour Liebman
This is Kordeleski’s fifth consecutive year on the Power List as his impressive record of growth at the helm of Bethpage Federal Credit Union continues. To younger generations, the financial institution will be more recognizable than the behemoth defense manufacturing company that gave birth to it. What defines the Kordeleski era is the understanding that to succeed in a community, business must support the people in it. With a philosophy of “what’s good for the community is good for Bethpage,” Kordeleski has become the tide that lifts all of our boats. And while there might be financial institutions with bigger balance sheets, none have bigger hearts— which is why “Double K” is the only banker you’ll find on this list. Last Year: 10TH Years: 6, 7, 8, 9
Seymour Liebman has done more than any other corporate business leader on LI to restore confidence in our region as a place with a promising economic future and a talented workforce to get the job done right. Thanks to Liebman’s far-sighted vision, Canon U.S.A. is putting the finishing touches on its brand new corporate headquarters along Old Walt Whitman Road in Melville. From his executive office overlooking the Long Island Expressway, Liebman will be overseeing decisions that affect the growth of this innovative company throughout the Western Hemisphere. The uncertainty of the Digital Age isn’t so daunting, knowing that Liebman is looking out for LI and this corporate giant that calls it home.

Steve Bellone
Last Year: 16TH
Suffolk County Executive
|
Dr. Samuel Stanley, Jr.
Last Year: 12TH
Stony Brook University President
|
Years: 8, 9
A Harvard University Med School grad, Stanley has given dozens of lectures on everything from amebiasis to parasitology nationwide. Since 2009, he has held the top spot at one of LI’s most important institutions—on multiple levels. SBU is not only responsible for churning out the next generation’s top docs, it is a business responsible for nearly 4 percent of all economic activity in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and approximately 7.5 percent of total jobs in Suffolk. Stanley has even bigger plans for the future, including a 250,000-square-foot medical research center devoted to imaging, neurosciences and cancer research.
Samuel Aronson, Ph.D.
Last Year: 14TH

Years: 8, 9
Powerful isn’t the only word that could sum up the man who’s been at the helm of one of the world’s leading research institutions since 1978. Amazing is up there, too. Under Aronson, a physicist, BNL has racked up seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries and grown so large it has its own police station, fire department—even its own zip code, which some 5,000 visiting researchers from around the world flock to each year. In 2015, the $912 million National Synchrotron Light Source II, which will allow unprecedented research, will be completed; and just this May, the lab decoded the structure of an enzyme that could render a carcinogen harmless. Aronson announced earlier this year he plans to step down as director so he can return to his research, where his true power lies. Because not only can Aronson explain the ins and outs of quark-gluon plasma, he just might be the one curing cancer some day.
Edward Mangano
Last Year: 13TH
Nassau County Executive
|
Years: 8, 9
Mangano knew he had his work cut out for him after defeating two-term incumbent Democrat Tom Suozzi in a December 2009 nail-biter for Nassau’s top elected spot. Since then it’s been an uphill battle for the seven-term county legislator from Bethpage, who’s tackled everything from the county’s infamously broken assessment system to devising creative ways to resolve its annual multi-million-dollar deficits. Not all his solutions have been met with fanfare, though. Hundreds protested Mangano’s privatization of Long Island Bus and his police precinct re-shuffling. Laying off hundreds of county employees didn’t win him any new friends, either. And NIFA is definitely not giving him a free pass. But Mangano isn’t afraid of a fight, nor of a little controversy, especially when he believes it’s in the best interests of Nassau residents.

It’s fairly well-established now that many in the so-called 1% have behaved rather badly of late. Not so for this particular financier who has proved the exception to the rule (or ruling class). Carter Bales is the co-founder and Managing Partner of New World Capital Group, a private equity firm investing in the environmental sector. The investment team is a “who’s who” list of New Yorkers such as firm principal Silda Wall Spitzer and board advisor Peter Goldmark, and their mission is simple: apply disciplined investment strategy to sound companies doing good things for the environment. It’s comforting to know there are well-heeled financiers investing in all of our futures and not just their own.

This health-care products and service provider based in Melville is a thriving presence in 24 countries, employing 15,000 people around the globe. From its humble beginnings as a pharmacy in Queens, this company has grown into a Fortune 500 powerhouse with billions of dollars in annual sales. But keeping it true to its roots in the values-based culture that Henry Schein and his wife Esther infused in the business when they started out 80 years ago is today’s chairman and CEO Stanley Bergman, who’s been an integral part of the enterprise for more than two decades. Long Island is lucky to have him and the company he keeps.

Alec Baldwin Actor
Though he’s a Nassau native, the 30 Rock star is an East End heavy hitter, whose ambitions have turned increasingly political of late as he’s grown frustrated at the status quo. Last fall Baldwin got into a war of words with State Senate Majority leader Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Cente) and emerged relatively unscathed, to say the least. Recently engaged and headed for the altar, Baldwin doesn’t look to settle down in his career. In fact, he’s told several interviewers that he wants to run for something, and when he idly mentioned the Suffolk County executive post, he must have sent shivers up and down you-know-who’s spine. Wherever he goes, Baldwin gets to write his own script—and he’ll have the final say.

For years Resi Cooper was known as Hillary Clinton’s go-to person on Long Island. Now she’s the go-to person for anyone lucky enough to get her. No longer standing in the shadow of her former powerhouse boss this aide-turnedconsultant is one of the most sought-after influencers in the region. Cooper’s client list ranges from developers to energy companies and she was most recently appointed as a consultant to the Accelerate Long Island group spearheaded by the LIA. Yet despite her success, Cooper typically plays it cool and eschews the limelight, preferring to move the Island’s chess pieces quietly behind the scenes. Pretty cool indeed considering she has the Secretary of State on speed dial. Last Year: N/A

How he finds time to surf, his passion from his childhood, is another amazing aspect of this enterprising stalwart of our community. And he’s just been tapped by Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos to join the new 15-member New York Works Task Force, which seeks to spur economic activity and job creation in the Empire State. From his perch high above Hauppauge in the top floor suites of the H. Lee Dennison Building, Babylon’s boy wonder has catapulted himself into the hottest seat in Suffolk County. On a clear day the view is spectacular but Bellone came into office already seeing the storm clouds looming on the horizon. He succeeds one of the most divisive county executives Long Island has seen in decades who apparently did him no favors by leaving Suffolk facing a huge fiscal crisis. Bellone has a stellar record as an economic and environmental trailblazer in his hometown. He’ll need to take it to a higher level to get the county back in the black again. We know he has the vision. Let’s hope the signs get better soon.

No. 20 John Staluppi
Gary Melius Oheka Castle Owner
After years of neglect and disrepair, Oheka Castle once again houses the seat of power on Long Island, and occupying the throne is castle owner and successful developer Gary Melius. Already known for its high-end functions, Oheka is now considered one of Long Island’s most luxurious hotels and is part of the Five Star Alliance and the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group. But Oheka is more than a tourist destination; it’s the closest thing Long Island has to a Capitol building. Walk the halls of the castle on any given day and you’re likely to bump into someone on this list seeking counsel from its king. From the infamous “card game” to power lunches with party bosses, the current occupant of Otto Kahn’s masterpiece reigns supreme. Last Year: 36TH

Farrell Fritz Managing Partner
One of Long Island’s largest and most highly respected law firms, Farrell Fritz serves clients throughout the Island and New York City. Playing a key role in this firm’s success is the indomitable Charles Strain, whose practice focuses on corporate and real estate law, representing clients ranging from financial institutions to healthcare providers and not-for-profit organizations. Strain is also active in the community, serving as chairman of the Winthrop-University Hospital’s Board of Directors, as well as serving on the boards of the Long Island Association, Family and Children’s Association, Sacred Heart Academy, and Accelerate Long Island. Strain may not crave the spotlight like some other attorneys we could name but his leadership in the legal world is without parallel. Last Year: 25TH

When Eduardo Mestre retired as chairman of CSHL’s Board of Trustees in 2010, members looked no further than within their own ranks to find his replacement. Nicholls, a Harvard Business School graduate and former General Partner at Forstmann Little & Co. who had also worked at Goldman Sachs and McKinsey & Co., not only had the pedigree, but she’d been a board trustee since 2006 and its treasurer since 2009. Members knew that her energy, dedication, commitment to excellence and passion for the Laboratory’s mission and standing as a world-recognized leader in biomedical research, education and genetics would be quite the perfect fit. Nicholls is not merely the institution’s new captain, she helped mold CSHL into the powerhouse it is today.

Long Island Power Authority COO and Acting CEO
Long Islanders have a love/hate relationship with the Long Island Power Authority, meaning we love to hate it. The job of top dog at LIPA has been highly politicized since its inception and entirely thankless, especially when a storm blows through. The current almost-chief of the embattled authority, Michael Hervey, lacks the connections of immediate past-president Kevin Law, or the media savvy of the larger-than-life Richie Kessel before that. In fact, Hervey possesses almost none of the qualities of his predecessors in that he actually trained for the job at hand. An electrical engineer by trade, Hervey has worked at LIPA since 2000 and enjoys deep support from his colleagues. Although Gov. Andrew Cuomo has yet to officially appoint Hervey to the top spot, there’s little doubt as to whether or not he’s in charge.

New York State Senator (R-Merrick)
Currently serving his seventh term in the state Senate, Fuschillo has been addressing the biggest issues facing Long Islanders for more than a decade. Drunk driving, cyberbullying, identity theft—he’s sponsored legislation battling them all, including Leandra’s Law, which makes it a felony to drive drunk with a child in the car and mandates all convicted drunk drivers to use ignition interlocks. Fuschillo has made economic development and recovery a top priority, helping create the Broad Hollow Bioscience Park at Farmingdale State College—critical to bolstering biotechnology companies on LI. Last year he authored a law further expanding it. As one of the GOP’s LI Gang of Nine, Long Islanders can always count on Chuck.

Since the winter of 2009 Mark Lesko has been elected Brookhaven supervisor three times. This former federal prosecutor must be doing something right. Besides giving the town a renewed reputation for government integrity, Lesko’s frozen taxes and reduced spending, while managing to jump-start economic development with the Brookhaven Rail Terminal, join with the Town of Islip to redevelop the Ronkonkoma Hub, and bring in the Accelerate Long Island program to help high-tech start-up companies take root. Lesko may have gotten more than his feet wet trying to save his Carmans River plan but at least he’s keeping his head above water despite some turbulent community opposition—and he’s headed in the right direction.

Collins has led Mineola-based Winthrop-University Hospital since 2009 and its acquisition of 24 practices spread across 40 locations with more than 115 physicians from Shelter Island to Queens. After starting as chief financial officer 15 years ago, he has proven most adept at surgically navigating the health-care system through its most challenging emergency room patient yet: the bleeding economy—not to mention the spreading side effects of national health-care reform. His vital signs include being ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals Metro Area Rankings for 10 high-performing specialties, including having one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals for pediatric diabetes and endocrinology.

Already a well-known and established figure in the tech world as the founder of FatWire Software in 1996—which he later sold—Fasciano has since moved into the world of venture capital. As the Island tries to reinvent itself in the new economy, Fasciano is increasingly sought after to become the face of Long Island’s future and given his winning history it’s probably not a bad bet. Aside from managing Canrock Ventures, an early stage tech venture fund, Fasciano was the impetus behind Karma 411, an online fundraising resource, and co-founder of General Sentiment, a company that might just be the “next big thing.” Last Year: N/A

As owner of the largest auto dealer network in New York and builder of some of the world’s biggest and most beautiful yachts, John Staluppi should take the next logical step and purchase an airline. The Staluppi dealerships are the model of efficiency, making this organization the most dominant dealer network on Long Island by a mile. Perhaps that’s why it is better known as New York Auto Giant. While the auto industry continues to fluctuate and empty dealerships dot the Long Island landscape, Staluppi continues to construct, innovate, hire and grow. But it’s more than dollars and cents that fuel his engine as Staluppi’s charitable work illustrates how big this auto giant’s heart truly is.

POWER
2012 Inductees
Michael Dowling
North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health Systems President and CEO He’s been called one of the 100 most powerful people in the health-care universe, which is certainly due in no small part to his stewardship of North Shore-LIJ, a multi-billion-dollar organization that has touched the lives of so many Long Islanders for decades—as well as being the largest employer on the Island. Dowling started out in the West Limerick village of Knockaderry, and still keeps a model of the thatched cottage he was born in to remind him of his humble roots. Since leaving home, he’s worked on the docks, cleaned bars at 5 a.m., and even sweated it out in the engine room of the Circle Line to support his pursuit of higher education, which eventually led him to a Master’s degree in Social Welfare from Fordham University. His policy insights brought him to the attention of Gov. Mario Cuomo, who appointed Dowling his commissioner of social services in 1983. From the Empire State, he went to work for Empire Blue Cross/ Blue Shield and joined the North Shore/LIJ health-care empire in 2002. Recently, Dowling had a hand in helping Hofstra University successfully launch its new medical school. His record of accomplishment is all the more remarkable, considering how far he’s had to come to make his mark on our region.
Bill O’Reilly
Fox News Commentator The O’Reilly Factor host and Westbury native is one of the best known and most-watched political commentators in the country, and each year his influence and power only grows. He’s also a prolific author; last year’s Killing Lincoln—a nonfiction account of the 1865 assassination of President Abraham Lincoln—joined many of his other works on The New York Times best-sellers list, with more than 1 million copies printed to date. Whether it’s voicing his opposition to an Islamic center near Ground Zero, lambasting Barney Frank or sounding off about Justin Bieber, George Clooney and President Obama, two things are a given: A) O’Reilly, a graduate of Chaminade High School, will call it how he sees it, controversial or not, and B) It’s going to be must-see-TV. As the November presidential election nears and Obama-Romney showdowns take center stage, one other thing’s a certainty: His in-your-face, no-holds-barred brand of political commentary will be right there, too.
Nancy Rauch Douzinas, Ph.D.
Rauch Foundation President Under the inspired vision of Nancy Rauch Douzinas, the Rauch Foundation has become a true agent of change for our region, whether it’s promoting programs to help disadvantaged young children, protecting the environment or developing leadership skills in the non-profit world to make a difference. Since its inception in 1961, the foundation has dispensed millions of dollars to a wide range of deserving causes. And more recently, thanks to her pushing the Long Island Index, a project that gathers and publishes data on our region, she’s using knowledge as power, under the guiding principle that “good information presented in a neutral manner can move policy.” That was definitely the case this year when the 2012 Index was unveiled at Farmingdale University to an assembly of some of the top politicians and policymakers on Long Island. A soft-spoken psychologist and family therapist by background, Douzinas knows she doesn’t have all the answers but she’s fearless when it comes to championing the search— and doing what she can to make Long Island a better place.

Bill Savino
Managing Partner, Rivkin Radler, LLP As managing partner for Long Island’s largest law firm—also among the region’s most prestigious—Savino’s power is most quantifiable in having the region’s largest army of attorneys under his command. Trying Nassau County’s high-profile lawsuit against the Nassau Interim Finance Authority last year aside, that power is more often than not wielded more subtly. Most recently, he was named by New York State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman to an advisory committee making recommendations on implementing a pro bono service requirement for attorneys seeking admission to the New York Bar. That’s just one of a litany of behind-the-scenes dealings and precedent-setting litigation—from Sept.11 World Trade Center Liability Coverage to the BPA-Plastic Products Coverage—Savino has put his stamp on over the years. Of course, you don’t have to believe us. Just ask any lawyer who’s been unfortunate enough to find him smiling back from the other side of the courtroom.

James Simons, Ph.D.
Renaissance Technologies, Inc. Founder and Chairman James “Jim” Simons is an American hedge fund manager, a mathematician and a philanthropist who has found the right formula for success on many levels. His multi-billion-dollar fund, Renaissance Technologies, which is based in New York, has gone stratospheric, lifting him to No. 82 on the Forbes 2012 World’s Billionaires List, with a net worth of $10.7 billion. That sum, which is not chump change by any means, makes this East Setauket resident the richest Long Islander. Not bad for the former chairman of the math department at Stony Brook University who earned his degrees at MIT and the University of California, Berkeley. He still chairs the Stony Brook Foundation, which is dedicated to advancing “the mission and goals” of Stony Brook through philanthropic gifts and grants. Thanks to his intervention, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at the Brookhaven National Laboratory—which was about to be shorted by the U.S. Energy Department—got an influx of cash to keep on doing its cutting-edge research. He’s also been a big backer of Democratic candidates, Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton) in particular, as well as a donor to “Majority PAC,” whose aim is to maintain a U.S. Senate Democratic majority. So, whether it’s probing physics, promoting math literacy (he founded Math for America) or encouraging autism research, Simons has had a huge impact putting his fortune to work.

No. 26 Marc Beige Rubie’s Costume Company President
In the epic battle between Wall Street and the Occupy movement an unlikely victor has emerged right here on Long Island. Every time an occupier dons the movement’s signature “V” for Vendetta mask, the register rings at Rubie’s Costume Company, the corporation that owns the license to the likeness. While no one could have predicted this particular corporate twist, Rubie’s President Marc Beige has been keeping this family-owned giant focused and growing since taking the reins in 1972. Beige keeps a remarkably low profile for a man who runs a multi-national organization that exists for children everywhere to dress up and have fun. With the opening of the stunning Rubie Corporate Plaza on Route 110, it’s high time to unmask our humble hero and introduce the man behind all of our capes. Last Year: N/A

Posillico Group Executive VP
Thanks to the tireless determination of far-sighted companies like the Posillico Group, Glen Isle, one of 16 national Environmental Protection Agency showcase projects, is on the fast track to transform more than 50 acres of Glen Cove’s contaminated waterfront into the largest mixed use, smart growth development on LI. Michael Posillico may not want to take the credit but his contributions certainly deserve recognition. His firm is a leader in brownfield remediation, and he’s not afraid to get his hands dirty when it comes to cleaning up the environment. Perhaps that’s why he’s just been named the new chairman of the League of Conservation Voters for Long Island. Good job.

In another era, the silver-bearded Patrick Foye would easily be mistaken for a Union general in the Civil War. But in our time, he’s leading a civilian army with billions of dollars in capital projects at stake as the head of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The decisions he makes—or doesn’t make—affect the lives of millions of people in our region, whether it’s rebuilding the World Trade Center, expanding Penn Station, modernizing LaGuardia Airport or hiking bridge and tunnel tolls. It seems like only yesterday when Foye was a voice of fiscal sanity in Nassau County. Now that he serves both Gov. Chris Christie and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, he must miss those good old days in Mineola. Come back anytime!
When Hurricane Irene unleashed her fury on Long Island, power outages weren’t the only thing we had to contend with. Downed trees and other natural debris literally covered the Island but as quickly as it fell it was carried away. Much of it wound up in the hands of Charles Vigliotti’s Long Island Compost, which worked around the clock with LIPA’s work crews to accept Mother Nature’s rubble. Vigliotti makes a living turning organic matter into finished material that is bagged and sold back into the market. It’s not an easy or sexy process but it eliminates tons of material from the waste stream and reduces municipal overhead. Vigliotti and his brothers who co-own the company have demonstrated that composting is as scalable as it is necessary. Last Year: 32ND

Association for a Better Long Island Executive Director
Desmond Ryan (“Des” to his friends) is a familiar presence to those in the position to make the decisions that affect how LI will look decades from now. A master networker, Ryan presides at the nexus of development and government. Given his lobbying experience shuttling between Washington, D.C. and Albany for Grumman Aerospace, and his previous work for a Suffolk County executive and the Assembly Speaker’s office focusing on LI issues, Ryan is the go-to guy for translating proposals into reality. He’s not afraid to call it the way he sees it. Whether it’s slamming the Coliseum referendum last summer or confronting NIMBYism every day of the week, Ryan will always give it his best shot.

As big-box electronics stores like Best Buy crumble, it defies the odds that a family-run local electronics company is not only staying above water after 100 years of business, but expanding and thriving under the leadership of Richard, the first retailer to ever make our Power List. For more than a century, Richard has sold everything from VCRs to beepers to iPads. By providing quality customer service, product guarantees and keeping up with the latest in technology—even launching what has become a top-rated app on iTunes—the Richard family has maintained a strong presence in the face of national competition, a presence that reaches far beyond the shores of LI. Just as this issue was going to press, New York State lawmakers announced a deal on a bill mandating that doctors check an online database of prescriptions in real time to crack down on doctor shopping. Among those in Albany this week lobbying for the legislation was Reynolds, LI’s chief anti-drug abuse advocate. He has been leading the fight against prescription drug abuse well before six people were killed in two LI pharmacy robberies last year. And in his spare time—a rare occurrence, considering the magnitude of the drug problems on the Island—Reynolds has managed to run the Long Island Marathon while simultaneously raising money to support LICADD’s programs. She’s been key to helping Verizon expand its Fios all-fiber network, and was responsible for trying to restore service as quickly as possible after Hurricane Irene knocked out LI last August. Before becoming the eighth president of Farmingdale State College, Hubert Keen spent 18 years rising through the ranks, from coordinator of environmental science programs to provost and vice president for academic affairs. Under Keen’s leadership, the college has been named one of the best in the North, one of the safest campuses in the nation, and one of the top 100 public colleges and universities in terms of earning power of graduates. Keen also established the Green Building Institute and arranged $185 million in campus construction projects—now that’s exceptional power. Currently celebrating its 100th Anniversary, the Farmingdale State College of today is a thriving technology and research institution and a major economic engine for the region, in no small part to Keen. How this woman keeps her cool while wading through some of the hottest controversies on LI is a testament to her strength and her business acumen as she heads the Island’s top public relations firm. Heaviside’s clients put their trust in her to get the job done and she delivers year after year. This spring she guided Veolia Transportation as it transformed the MTA’s Long Island Bus into the Nassau Inter-County Express, no easy undertaking considering that the deal came wrapped in controversy. It’s no wonder The New York Times has called Heaviside “The Crisis Queen.” It also helps that she’s got a disarming smile to go with her regal charm.

United Way of Long Island President and CEO
WAY TO GO THERESA! The staff at United Way of Long Island congratulates our own Theresa Regnante for being named to the Long Island Press Power List. Thank you, Theresa, for helping to influence young lives and advancing the common good on Long Island.
Michael Wigler, Ph.D.
Genetics Professor, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
Wigler has been a trailblazer in the field of biomedical research, including human genetic disorders, population genetics and cancer genomics, and his contributions to the field of mammalian genetics have led to medicinal breakthroughs in the treatment of strokes, heart disease and cancer. Wigler’s work on mammalian cell gene transfer is nothing short of groundbreaking—with several major scientific discoveries occurring behind the walls of CSHL, where he has been since 1979. His genius unparalleled, Wigler remains on the forefront of molecular cancer research, unraveling the mysteries of the genetic mutations driving the evolution of cancer cells and those that underlie genetic diseases, such as autism, and discovering new disease-causing genes. Patchogue is buzzing with music, night life, retail stores and restaurants. This gateway to Fire Island’s east end has become a destination in itself with innovative, mixed-use development that brings the heart of the village alive. Now in his third term, Pontieri was doing this just because it made sense—he didn’t know he should just say “no” like all the others in office before him who let things decline. Just watch what happens after TRITEC’s New Village project is completed, with its 291 residential units nestled above office and commercial space at the ground level; and nearby there’ll be a mini-Soho with lofts for artists, plus two more music venues to join the Patchogue Theatre. This place is hip, not bad for a village once consigned to the dust bin.

Frederick Brewington Civil Rights Attorney
For all that Fred Brewington has done in his career, winning a $7-million county settlement payment to the family of Jo’Anna Bird this spring may take the cake. The mother of two was killed by ex-boyfriend Leonardo Valdez-Cruz in 2009. Fourteen Nassau County police officers and a patrol supervisor were reassigned or disciplined for failing to arrest Valdez-Cruz for domestic violence prior to Bird’s murder. The murder trial and lawsuit sparked new police disciplinary rules, increased efforts against domestic violence and a rare joint statement with the oft-indignant Nassau County Attorney John Ciampoli acknowledging a “breakdown in the system.” That’s true power: to get government to admit it was wrong. This Democrat, having survived war with former Republican Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, whom he helped oust, has become the longest-serving presiding officer in county history. Like his counterpart in Nassau, Lindsay has come under fire for some unpopular measures—the post-Election Day tax hike for one— just as he’s tasked with filling a budget gap rivaling Suffolk’s fiscally plagued neighbor to the west. Long Island is a complicated matrix of independent communities and fiefdoms that have common problems but fragmented leadership. As director of Molloy College’s Energeia Partnership, Nancy Engelhardt seeks to provide the antidote for what ails us by bringing together our disparate network of business, community and political leaders to effect positive change for the Island as a whole. More than 300 people, including many on this list, have participated in this program, which has elevated the discussion of Long Island’s future in a way many similar efforts have failed to do. Truth is power. Voicing the truth under the threat of retaliation or termination takes even greater power. When rank-and-file police officers saw inappropriate and allegedly illegal behavior taking place behind the Blue Wall of Silence—the preferential treatment of a wealthy police donor’s son— they spoke out. Doing so led to the biggest news story on Long Island this year to date—Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice’s indictment of the county’s third-highest ranking police official, Second Deputy Commissioner William Flanagan, Deputy Chief Inspector John Hunter and Detective Sergeant Alan Sharpe on corruption charges. Because, unfortunately, power can also be abused.

This Week: First Place Fashion Fashion Week Energizes NY
By Erica DeMichiel, Horizon, Lynbrook High School
Energy filled the streets around New York City’s Lincoln Center as stylists, editors and bloggers raced from show to show during MercedesBenz Fashion Week. From Feb. 9 to 16, designers showcased their latest fall creations to members of the fashion elite, as well as audiences reached through live online video streaming. Innovation was brought to a higher level than ever before as new silhouettes, accents, and prints strutted down the
runways and old styles were revamped. One twist that was prominent in several designers’ collections was the presence of florals. Although prints were in darker, more subdued colors than those of spring, fall looks may not typically be associated with flower patterns. But designers such as Rodarte and Jason Wu fearlessly went against traditional standards by toning down the bright florals of spring and creating quieter prints made specifically for fall. For the edgier crowd, Alexander Wang, Derek Lam, and Calvin Klein displayed several leather pieces in distinct styles.
Wang worked the material into intricate coats, vests and skirts, while Klein focused on clean lines and geometric structure. Other designers seemed to be more interested in emphasizing accessories. Wild hats and funky glasses were especially prevalent in designer Anna Sui’s collection, whose use of owl earflap hats and spectacles similar to those of Harry Potter combined bold tights and vibrant prints made for an intensely eclectic feel. Marc Jacobs also used crazy hats in his collection, most of which were huge, fuzzy and furry.
Keeping up with the fuzziness of the Marc Jacobs collection, fur accents proved to be quite popular among other designers as well. Doo Ri and Alzaturra both featured asymmetrical coats trimmed with fur, and Carolina Herrera crafted an innovative bubble skirt using a similar material. The designer duo Rag & Bone created a feminine yet edgy silhouette by belting many of their oversized garments, and Alice + Olivia kept the comfortable look glamorous with sequins, leather, and fur.

2012 BELMONT STAKES @ BELMONT Park Race Track After winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, I’ll Have Another is vying to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 at Elmont’s 1.5-mile dirt track Saturday, 6.9. To earn the legendary status, a horse must not only deal with what is in most cases the longest distance of their racing life but the grueling schedule—the Belmont takes place three weeks after the Preakness and five weeks after the Kentucky Derby. Since most high-level thoroughbreds usually race every three or four weeks, the timing of the Triple Crown races is as big of a challenge as the races themselves. Stop by or tune in to see if I’ll Have Another takes another, but first start the party early Friday, 6.8, at the Belmont Festival on Seventh Street in Garden City from 6-10 p.m. and on Tulip Avenue in Floral Park from 5-9 p.m.—Daphne Livingston

FOSTER THE PEOPLE @ CENTRAL PARK SUMMERSTAGE Showing there’s more than one way to skin a cat, (or in this case— land a record deal), Foster the People broke through after their single “Pumped Up Kicks” went viral and became a ginormous smash. This crossover appeal allowed FTP to not only land a Best Alternative Album Grammy nod, but somehow get Kenny G to play on “Houdini” on Saturday Night Live. Monday, 6.11—Dave Gil de Rubio
OUTASIGHT @ TANGER OUTLETS AT THE ARCHES DEER PARK Before signing with Warner Bros. in 2009 and having a song featured in a Pepsi commercial, Yonkers pop artist and rapper Outasight made his rounds through small venues in NYC like the Bowery Poetry Club and the Nuyorican Café. He went on to play the 2007 Hip Hop Festival alongside Ghostface Killah and Consequence. Now Outasight takes center stage to perform his latest radio hits “Tonight is the Night” and “Now or Never.”—Jaclyn Gallucci

LI PRIDE FEST & PARADE
Organizers for the 22nd annual Long Island Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Pride Parade and Festival are taking it up a notch this year with floats, recording artists and high heels. The LI Pride Parade Committee previously ran the parade, but last July it became part of The LI GLBT Services Network, run by CEO David Kilmnick, who is also a founder of the committee. “It’s sort of a coming home for myself,” he says. “And we’re totally changing the event, making a Pride like Long Island has never seen before.” The first change is the route, which now starts on New York Avenue near Union Place in Huntington. Also new to the parade are floats, and they’ve upped the number of groups marching from 22 to around 50. But it isn’t strictly a parade. Beforehand will be the first-ever High Heel Race. “We’re bringing some fun and camp to the parade,” Kilmnick says, adding that 70 pairs of heels were donated for the race. “It should be quite a scene and a lot of fun.” The fun is set to continue after the parade with PrideFest in Huntington’s Heckscher Park, where Frenchie Davis of American Idol and The Voice will perform, along with LaBouche, Lucas Prata, Reina and others. Community groups and vendors will set up shop in the park, along with a Health Pavilion providing HIV tests and other screenings. Also on hand will be eight gourmet food trucks and a VIP tent, along with a children’s area featuring cotton candy, magicians, face painting and more. “What we’ve set up for this fullday festival is something for everyone on Long Island, regardless of your sexual orientation,” Kilmnick says. “We’re coming down to celebrate gay pride, of course, but it’s really about celebrating together as a Long Island community.” The high heel race kicks off at 12:30 p.m., the parade at 1 p.m. and PrideFest from 2-8 p.m. Saturday, 6.9. —Lindsay Christ

The Time Has Come for Alternate Development Newsday recently reported that Long Island has all of the necessary assets and potential to redefine itself as a major economic and innovation powerhouse‌comparable to places like Silicon Valley, Research Triangle and San Diego. An alternate development plan for the former Cerro Wire property on Robbins Lane in Syosset could help make that happen. The last thing LI needs is another shopping mall. Alternate development is the answer.

EATING OUT IN THE HAMPTONS
Come summer, the quiet place known for rolling sand dunes, beautiful farms and old world towns does a complete 180 when millions of folks around the globe—from Wall Street yuppies and the glitterati of the music world to jet setting socialites (We’re hoping to see Pippa this summer!) and oil tycoons—flock to the region we call home sweet home. And while sometimes it’s a little annoying that our own turf has been taken over by natives of other faraway lands, it’s a great place to people watch and enjoy top eats, all thanks to the seasonal crowd. Andrra, East Hampton: This East End hot spot offers diners a Mediterranean menu, concocted by consulting chef William Valentine and executive chef Sami Krasniqi, and a marvelous view of Three Mile Harbor. Norwegian salmon, Napeague little neck clams, roasted rack of American lamb, baklava stuffed with walnuts and summer pudding with seasonal fruits are just a few things that can be found on the menu. And when you’re done feasting for the night, patrons can party it up at the restaurant’s lounge that’s open until 2 a.m.

LIPA’s Critical Care Program Make your plans today. Call us. In unforeseen circumstances or severe weather, electrical outages may occur. If you or a family member rely on life-support equipment, filing a medical certificate from your doctor or local Board of Health with LIPA now is important. By filing a medical certificate, LIPA will tag your LIPA account as “Critical Care,” and when a severe storm is anticipated, we will call to remind you to make advance preparations. If an outage does occur, every effort will be made to restore your electricity as soon as possible. However, priority is given to restoration efforts that will restore power to the largest number of customers at once. Customers enrolled in our Critical Care Program should contact friends and family now to make sure help is available in the event there is an electric service interruption. The Critical Care Program does not guarantee priority restoration of service.
