Join us and you will develop your artistry and discover how you can make an impact as a musician.
Karen Zorn, President No matter what experiences are served up by life, we should never underestimate the real and sustaining power of giving voice to what lives within us, whether that is through an instrument, through composing a new work, or, quite literally, through our vocal cords. Here at Longy, we see our role as guiding and facilitating
experiences that nudge you towards finding your voice and how you use it in the world.
Think of this viewbook as a window into a unique community that is exploring new ways to shape musical artistry. We invite you to be a part of this place, where musicians are actively choosing how we can—individually and collectively—have impact in the world around us.

Your potential counts Whether you found music at age 2 or 22, there’s a place for you at Longy. Here, all lived experiences and skills are welcome and all kinds of musicians succeed. We invest in musicians who will make a difference in the world by pledging to remove barriers for their conservatory education. Danny Rivera Baritone “My four years at the Boston Arts Academy were focused on my development as an artist-scholar-citizen. In my senior year, I wrote a song for Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley that addressed social issues. I hoped this song would bring unity to our community. ‘We’re On Our Way Up’ realized that dream—as it was formally and widely recognized.”
Pingyulan Long Jazz, Piano, & Vocals
Joi Harper Composition
“My goal is to make an impact on the world by expressing myself through music. I want to use my knowledge to promote artistic literacy, and to sow seeds of inspiration. I have an ambition to be not just a performer but also a disseminator of ideas. I want people to be moved by a rich variety of music.”
“I come from a family of female leaders, and every day I’m inspired by them. I want to be an inspiration to other composers and encourage young women and women of color to join this field. Don’t compare yourself with others or worry if other people will like what you’ve written—let your journey be your own.”

Corrine Byrne Boston and New York-based soprano Corrine Byrne is chair of Longy’s Vocal Studies department and a founding member of several ensembles with great range and eclectic repertoire. At Longy, world-class working musicians help you elevate your artistry, but we also try to model what a modern music career looks like. While you’re building your own artistic identity, you’re honing the skills for forging the career that’s right for you. At the beginning of any career, there are always the inevitable rejections, and it’s easy to feel discouraged and lost. What helped me cope was starting my own projects—work that kept me engaged while I competed for the most sought-after jobs and gigs, and, more importantly, kept me honest about what I wanted to do musically. You’re doing what you want, and doing what you love, and then one day you realize you’re winning a few of those auditions for big jobs—which for me meant a solo appearance here, an opera role there. I’d built a résumé based on my personal passion projects, and that made room for me in the bigger picture. That’s what you’ll learn at Longy: being a musician means more than performing notes from the page. Following your passion can take you to a place where music truly makes a difference in the world.

Spencer Myer What gives me the greatest joy in performing is communication. I particularly enjoy the challenge of channeling my own musical voice through the composer’s thoughts and intentions, stylistic parameters, and directions in the score. Playing with other musicians, those connections multiply: with the audience, but also with one’s musical partners. To “speak” and respond to each other through music is one of the most exciting sensations I can imagine. The life of a musician is all-encompassing. For me, that’s meant being a soloist, businessman, chamber musician, publicist, accompanist, manager, teacher, and coach, among many other roles. So as an educator, I stress studying a breadth of repertoire of all style periods, understanding vocal and instrumental collaboration, and staying aware of musical goings-on outside of your immediate environment—as well as the importance of social media savvy and the business of assembling demos and press materials. Aside from becoming the best pianist and musician you can be, it is important to build a community of colleagues/friends/collaborators. Longy provides this wonderful community—along with the tools for finding your own voice and pathway.
Piano / Collaborative Piano With a roster of active performers on the faculty, students advance their mastery as soloists and chamber musicians with private studio instruction at its core. A weekly piano seminar expands approaches to practicing, interpretation, and programming. Each week, the class will briefly cover an historical topic, delve into current issues in the classical music world, and analyze works for listening, study, and reflection. Contemporary Piano Performance Practice Learn and practice extended performance techniques, which are often called for in piano music of the 20th and 21st century, but are often unfamiliar to college-age students. Neal Smith “I feel that music chose me. I was raised in a church that had a very good music ministry, and one day around the age of three I just sat down and started to play the drums along with the choir and band.” The first African-American to earn a degree in Jazz Studies from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Neal Smith went on to lead his own band, to share the stage with jazz luminaries here and abroad, and, seeing a need, to found a label focused exclusively on jazz recordings. Playing it forward, he says, “I feel it’s my responsibility not only to pick up where my fathers left off, but also to continually modernize the jazz sound through composition and performance. Ultimately, I feel I have a responsibility to positively influence other musicians in this truly African-American art form. “The history of jazz is the foundation the music stands on. And because jazz is a collaboration of communities—Brazilian, Asian, Indian, African, Cuban, European—musicians of the future have more of a vocabulary to choose from in telling their story. The music will always live on.”

Sarah Darling Sarah’s music spans centuries and styles on viola and baroque violin. She is “a tireless force of musical curiosity, skill, and enthusiasm (Boston Musical Intelligencer).” In addition to countless early music and new music ensembles, she is a central force in A Far Cry, a Longy partner who recently topped Billboard’s Traditional Classical charts and earned two Grammy nominations. “This is my first year teaching at Longy! It’s a whirlwind of diverse experiences within a family-sized footprint. The fact that you can delve into historical performance, new music, and jazz without blinking an eye—or walking 100 feet—is breathtaking. And there’s a feeling of community, an ability to work together that grows naturally. That’s the school in a nutshell: it’s a family feeling, even though members come from across the country and around the world. Music breaks down boundaries, and I feel like this works by example. You have to show that you’re willing to ‘go there’ and then wait to see if folks will meet you there. On the great days, ‘there’ is a crowded place! This community is a well-suited to musicians with a vision who want to expand music, play with it, and ultimately, live it.”

Andy Kozar Good music is good music! In high school, on any day you might hear coming from my room classical trumpet music, n’Sync, punk, jazz, symphonic classical music, and some pretty cheesy country. To this day, there’s really not a style I don’t like. Later I wanted more from my musical life, I wanted to be more engaged with the creative and collaborative aspects of music making, and new music was where I found that space to explore. I came to early music a bit later, but I think I was drawn to it for the same reasons I was drawn to new music. There’s an experimental, creative, collaborative essence to performing early music. We’ll never know exactly what it sounded like, but we can experiment with the instruments, with the old texts, and together create something that, though written hundreds of years ago, is fresh, exciting, and vibrant. What I find inspiring aren’t so much the instruments as the performers. Hearing Kristian Bezuidenhout spin a phrase on the piano-forte, or Dave Douglas dance across all registers of the trumpet— these are the people I find inspiring, no matter the instrument. At Longy, we give our students incredible agency over the shape and focus of their education—all within a close-knit community of musical learning and creation, in a city with one of the country’s most vibrant and diverse musical scenes!

Alexandra du Bois The unique spirit of Longy—its vision, scope, and commitment to social justice—shaped me into the artist, composer, and human being I am today. My work has been commissioned, premiered, and recorded on five continents, by some of the most exciting and esteemed ensembles, including the Kronos Quartet and Beaux Arts Trio. But I never forget that my first composition lesson was at Longy. This was where I began to find the passion, foundation, and community I needed to build my future as a successful composer. The musicians I’ve grown with have shaped my sound and the scope of music in my life. Musicians and the composers do not live separately from one another; we depend on each other. These close, long-term, and intimate relationships continue to have a life of their own. But the voice inside you that most wants to be heard, whether it wants to call out or speak softly, needs to be heard by you, the artist, first, before it can be shared with the world. At Longy, you can find or nurture that voice, so that it is as strong and deep as your unique and expressive presence on the planet.
Composition Longy composers work in a vibrant, artistic environment where public performance of new compositions is central to the experience. Composition students benefit from experienced mentoring in a supportive new music community dedicated to high standards and academic inquiry. Opportunities to write music for soloists, chamber groups, orchestras, and contemporary ensembles abound! Longy’s composition faculty ensure that students work closely with student groups and professional ensembles in the Boston community and beyond. Anne Azéma Performing music from the past is anything but a static, backward-looking endeavor! We early music performing artists are entirely engaged with what resonates strongly today in our turbulent modern world. We strive to bring happiness and meaning to all of us. In addition to my work as a solo singer, I am the Artistic Director of The Boston Camerata, the eminent early music ensemble founded in 1954. We record and tour on four continents, reimagining music of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras, as well as early American music. Since the Boston Camerata has been in residence at Longy, we have invited Longy students to collaborate on the development of special projects. Both Longy and Camerata derive great satisfaction from these collective enterprises. Recent projects involving Longy students include The Play of Daniel, a French medieval mystery play (here in Cambridge and on tour on the West coast); La Estrella, Hispanic Baroque music of Latin and South America; Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell; Liberty Tree, songs of freedom and rebellion from early America; and the medieval Carmina Burana, sometimes presented in festive juxtaposition with the famous twentieth century piece of the same name by Carl Orff.

Graduate Degrees/Diplomas MASTER OF MUSIC (MM) You’re ready to take a deep dive academically and artistically in this two-year Master of Music program. Longy’s innovative Catalyst Curriculum pairs musical excellence with a focus on the skills you’ll need to become a professional musician: the ability to design experiences, produce projects, and engage audiences with exceptional musical encounters. Dedicated career coaching will help guide your studies and prepare you for what comes after graduation. GRADUATE PERFORMANCE DIPLOMA (GPD) GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN COMPOSITION (GD) This two-year program was created so you can focus intensively on training, performance, and professional opportunities. The GPD/GD program usually comes after the completion of a Master of Music degree. Compared to the Master of Music, it requires fewer academic courses and is focused on your skills and interests. If you want to dig in deeper before launching your career, this program is perfect for you. ARTIST DIPLOMA (AD) For music to thrive, the world needs change-makers who will question and dream about what comes next. While the desire to keep the canon of masterworks alive is laudable, it is no longer enough. Longy, in turn, places its primary focus on preparing students for a meaningful life in music.
Wanted: Musicians who possess a keen desire to disrupt the status quo; who wish to contribute to society and be part of music’s evolution; who will join other artists in forging that future. Longy’s Artist Diploma program offers the opportunity for emerging musicians to craft, design, and curate artistic projects over a two-year residency period. The program is designed for exceptionally gifted musicians who demonstrate great potential to impact and change the world by challenging norms and breaking the mold.
Undergraduate Degrees/Diplomas UNDERGRADUATE DIPLOMA (UD) If you’re a performer or composer who is self-motivated, on a mission, and wants to fast-track your career, dive into this three-year, music-intensive program. You’ll benefit from working alongside graduate students and professional musicians in ensembles, performance, and repertory courses—and if you decide to pursue your Master of Music degree, you’ll graduate in five years rather than six. BACHELOR OF MUSIC (BM) Earn your Bachelor of Music degree from Emerson College through a joint program with Longy. Benefit from Longy’s conservatory faculty, performance opportunities, and artistic and social change programs while fulfilling your liberal arts credits at Emerson. You’ll be able to take advantage of the resources of both institutions—including the alumni network and career services—setting you up for success after graduation Programs of Study available for UD and BM Brass Organ Piano Strings Vocal Studies Woodwinds Composition
