Through the analysis, the underlying geometric al rules, rhythmn and proportions reveal its hierachy in the design, thus laying the foundation for meaningful design abstractions from it. 1:250

6

SUBTLET Y Proportions gleaned and archways adapted, within Brunelleschi’s works they lie. Rediscovered and re-interpreted, of colonnades and timber grid shells they governed.

7

ELEVATED PIAZZA Redefining piazzas within old It alian cities by lifting them above the threshold and activating views beyond the immediate vicinity. 8

FRAMED PROPORTIONS & PARKS In paying tribute to Brunelleschi’s architecture works, windows which were directed towards them were in the proportions (e.g 4:5 for Duomo’s fundamental dome ratio) crucial to their form. Additionally, parks are created where columns touch the ground to create intimate green spaces within the tree-sparse city. 9

10

11

MARIO BOTTA’S CRIT The project was selected amongst 12 projects to be presented to Architect Mario B ott a where he supported the idea of leaving the ground untouched, creating new void public spaces and respecting the herit age of the Uffizi Galler y by not building above it because to do so would be akin to attempting to complete a Michelangelo’s painting. 12

COMPUTATIONAL BUTTERFLIES “Do what you can’t.” was the slogan of the exhibition and thus the design proposal was to abstractly represent the revolutionary Samsung Fold phone as flocks of butterflies taking flight from the ground, agglomerating into a giant 3D butterfly hovering weightlessly over the launch. In achieving this a computational approach in grasshopper is adopted (right) executed by me.

Is there a greener alternative towards plant transplant ation?

UPCYCLING FABRICATION PROCESS

FABRICATION OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW Our project proposes the application of waste wood aggregates and chitosan adhesive in the additive manufacturing process. Bypassing the need for high resolution printing in applications where minute accuracy is not needed - for instance containers used in plant transplantation - we proposed a fabrication method with low cost and production time as a probable substitute for plastic. BIOMIMICRY Drawing inspiration from the layering process of the construction of a paper wasp nest involving cellulose fibres (from dead wood) and proteins in the wasp’s saliva, we replaced the binding agent with chitosan which also has high affinity with cellulose. This resulted in a structurally compatible option which is also biodegradable, controlled by bacteria, thereby presenting a sustainable alternative to the life cycle of wood waste.

ROLE IN TEAM My main role within the group encompasses taking lead of the research direction and the team, the idea initiation, sourcing of materials, calibration of fabrication methods using 6 axis robotic arm and material studies as well coordinating between team mates from engineering and architecture major. 1 | Waste wood shavings s orted according to ag gregate size 55

D: WAX & USE After a layer of wax is applied to theAirartefact, it Dry can be used in plant transplantation.

ASSEMBLY Due to the drying time needed for chitosan to completely harden, the final artefact is printed in 6 separate batch each ~10cm in height and assembled together with additonal chitosan. 1-9 | Ass embly proce ss of the 6 layers of woodchitos an composite 56

Can art and architecture be mutually inclusive?

58

SUMMER INTERNSHIP SANDWICH is a Kyoto based arts and architecture studio founded by Kohei Nawa, a renowned international artist. With a 3.5 months internship there, I experienced the confluence of art and architecture as artists and architects brush shoulders within the studio. Imbuing a deeper meaning in architecture through the lens of art, it has broadened my perception of how both elements c an be mutually inclusive.

Baker.J is a home-based startup founded in November 2015, for 7 months before I matriculated. It was my creative platform to explore articulating my designs on paper into 3D forms through cakes, chocolates and fondants. With over 50 orders, I challenged myself through the 3D sculpturing of cakes, through delicate chocolate forms as well as acquired online marketing skills using SEO and social media as well as honed my communication skills with customers. MINECRAFT START OF A JOURNEY

Minecraft was my first “lego, a creative outlet in experimenting with forms and understanding the basics of building and construction. Through play, my curiosity in understanding how buildings are composed and constructed gave me the impetus to uncover and re-interpret them within Minecraft.
