As the second largest city in Canada, downtown Montreal is busy. There is always a fast pace, lots of people and traffic and a strong atmosphere even in the depths of winter when the temperature reaches -25 degrees Major industry, shopping malls, three universities and the Bell Centre, home to the Montreal Canadians hockey team, are all based here, and each play their part in creating thriving and a bustling city environment

Just like any other major metropolitan city, the Metro is the lifeblood of Montreal Tens of thousands of people commute around the small city every day, and with unique design and architecture inside each station, the Metro is actually quite a nice place to be

Summer nights in Montreal are a haven of nightlife, culture and celebration With so many students in the city there is always a good party or concert on, and when you’re finished revelling the city-scape transforms thanks to well designed lighting that accentuates the hidden gems of architecture throughout downtown and the old city

Originally the centre of ‘New France’ in the 1600’s, Old Montreal was largely rebuilt in the early 1800’s after fires destroyed most of the city This was shortly after British rule came in, and explains the distinctly English look and feel to the buildings in the area Today this area is full of bars & restaurants and in summer is the ideal place to relax down by the water Undoubtedly the nicest part of Montreal, I always make time to walk around the old port when I’m in town

The mountain that stands over Montreal gave the city it’s name in the early 19th century A large open park full of wildlife, particularly squirrels, is the best place to walk around in the city away from the noise and traffic of the busy streets 360 degree views of the city can be enjoyed from the mini-mountain which features two belvedere plazas on opposite sides of the hill

No matter how much man tries to concrete over everything in cities, nature will always find a way to live on

This man-made island sits in the middle of the St Lawrence River, built entirely with rock excavated from digging the cities Metro system The small island features a casino built in 1967 for the World Expo, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, home to the Canadian Grand Prix, which is open for public use throughout the year by cyclists and runners. It is a completely different world floating just outside the city

Cities are very much like people, in that their beauty is not only skin deep. I would not recommend Montreal as a beautiful place to visit, but I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it as an amazing city to spend time in. The beauty is there, it’s just hiding Look around
