News & Events Sydenham Fayre is back..! Saturday 3rd June | 12:30pm to 4:00pm A fun family day out including live entertainment, children’s games, dog show, vintage cars, BBQ, tearoom and stalls.. After a 3-year break, Sydenham village in South Oxfordshire will once again be welcoming visitors to its much-anticipated Sydenham Fayre. The Fayre will take place on Saturday 3rd June between 12.30 and 4pm. The long-established event, co-ordinated and run entirely by villagers, raises funds for local groups and causes, supporting schools, community organisations and facilities in the surrounding area. In 2019, it raised over £5,500 for local causes. Visitors are kindly asked to note that this year’s event will be cash only. The Fayre centres around the picturesque village green and this year’s programme is packed with exciting shows and activities: •

Live entertainment will be taking place all day, including performances from popular local band ‘Syd’ -, the ‘New Moon’ Morris Team, a circus entertainer and a local dance group.

Kids activities, including the Fayre’s own ‘Kids’ Corner’ featuring hourly shows from the magical Mr Marvel and a variety of games for all ages. There will be face painting and kids will also be able to enjoy the inflatable assault course.

Food and drink galore, including the delicious BBQ hosted by Sydenham’s cricket team, ice cream and popcorn, as well as the ‘Gin and Pimm’s Palace’. The much-loved Tea Room, next to the church, will be serving sumptuous cakes and pastries, along with a selection of hot drinks throughout the day.

‘Sydenham Car Show’, with new gems to its collection of vintage and envy-inducing automobiles.

The much-anticipated Sydenham Dog Show with a variety of classes to suit most canine competitors. Be sure to bring along your pampered pooches to compete for the coveted titles of ‘Best Fancy Dress’ and ‘Sydenham Supreme’. Dog Show classes commence from 1pm – registration starts at 12.30pm.

The roads will be lined with stalls selling quality gifts and goodies from local producers, plus there’ll be the ever-popular Bottle Tombola, Coconut Shy, Plate Smash, Plant Sale, Bric-ABrac, Jewelry and Vintage Clothing and Fortune Teller. As ever, the event will be rounded off by the hotly contested Tug-Of-War competition with men’s and women’s teams from The Crown pub and The Inn at Emmington battling it out for the historic trophy at 3.30pm. The raffle will also be drawn, with a first prize of £100 for the winning ticket and the chance to win a dinner for two at either of the village’s excellent pubs. Whilst the road through the village will be closed for the day, extensive free parking is available on the edge of the village, which can be accessed from the B4445 (coming from Chinnor, turn left at The Inn at Emmington). Disabled parking will be available. As a community event, the success of the day relies so much on the enthusiasm of visitors from the neighbouring town and villages…so bring the family and help make Sydenham Fayre a highlight in the village’s calendar…we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone along for a fabulous day! Home & Garden

Transforming Outside Space... By Coulon Stone

The start of spring has got us dreaming of drinks on the patio and dinners in the garden. Make the most of summer by turning your outside space in to a staycation spot – a seductive space where you can escape and de-stress. Below are some tips on how to apply those all important holiday essentials of relaxation, entertainment and earthly elements to your garden. Bare Foot Basics Holidays provide a sense of freedom, including freedom for our feet. Walking around outside bare foot signals, ‘ahh, I’m on holiday’. Create this sense of freedom in your own garden by carefully considering what’s going on the ground. For a patio area, natural stone like limestone and sandstone are hardwearing and slip resistant, but also have an earthy texture and tone, transporting your feet to Mediterranean villas or sandy beaches. One of our most popular patio materials is a limestone called Aria. It offers all the durability and style of any other limestone, but without the price tag..

Cocktail O’Clock Prioritise entertainment by creating your very own outdoor bar. It can complement the style of your home or be a signature oasis that makes your staycation feel more like a private getaway. Invest in comfortable seating, warm string lighting, as well as a bar top. For a material that compliments the natural surroundings of your garden, choose a hardy, textured slate. Or if you need to think about space saving use a foldout wall bar shelf.

Fire & Water A holiday’s not complete without fire or water. They draw people in and allow us to escape. A natural stone fire pit means you can use your garden for longer and encourages everyone to gather round and enjoy the outside. A water feature or pond encourages nature to the garden and creates a sense of calm. With a little imagination and the correct equipment, sandstone or granite off-cuts can be used to create water features or bird baths. If the longer days have your thoughts turning to your outside space, look no further than Coulon Stone for inspiration and expertise - we have your garden covered. If you have a question or need some help with your outside project, please get in-touch via our website www.coulonstone.com or visit our workshop in Stokenchurch.

Home & Garden

Look locally over the garden gate with Lucie Giselle Ponsford

April’s garden feature is all about Screening! You know this is probably the biggest role of garden design, it certainly is the most frequent consideration for my clients. We live in communities, we are social beings and yet our home is our sanctuary and a green oasis is the best refuge from our busy lives, a place to spend time with our nearest and dearest, insulated from the world. So, how can we aesthetically preserve our privacy without making an aggressive defensive statement? First consider where you are going to sit? Spend time and note the sight lines. A carefully planted tree or three within the garden rather than on the boundary edge can offer better screening. Remember the beauty of perspective: we get greater height coverage from something closer to us. Pleached trees, which look like hedges on stilts are fabulous solutions for you if you do want to plant on the boundary line, though they are expensive and need time to establish and thicken out. If you do want to heighten your fence there are legal limits on our fence heights generally at 6ft. However this can increase to 8ft with a trellis or slatted screening. What is my preference? As a designer I would be drawing your focus not on what you need to screen but on what you want to see when you are in your garden. A pergola over a seating area can make a beautiful destination in the garden and provide screening for you when you are dining or chilling. Keep that focus positive and improve what you have in your space rather than bolstering your boundary with trees or fences that will draw your eye to the problem.

With love, Lucie
