SCHOOL GIRL, 11 RAISES £21,000 FOR CHILDREN’S CANCER CHARITIES

An 11-year-old school girl has raised over £21,000 by sponsored swims, selling handmade sewn items and raffling signed merchandise from the music and footballing worlds.

Leah Walton began creating footballthemed items to raise money for her young friend Jude Mellon-Jameson, who died aged five of a rare childhood cancer last October The Angram Bank pupil from High Green initially raised £16,100 to try and help Jude receive treatment abroad. This money will now be used for children suffering similar illnesses through the Solving Kids Cancer Charity Leah's dad, Craig, said his daughter had wanted to raise money after Jude was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer.

"When Jude passed away in September last year, obviously we were all upset and gutted," he said.

"But Leah just turned around four days after and said, 'I want to carry on, she decided on raising money for Cancer Unit at The Sheffield Children’s Hospital in memory of where Jude died”. This total currently stands over £5,000 Craig said the pair became "quite giddy" this year when funds approached £20,000 and "a big Facebook push" helped reach the target and now beyond.

Leah asked for a sewing machine for Christmas 2022 and her mum, Charlotte, said the family's kitchen had become a crafting workshop.

APPEAL TO IDENTIFY SHEFFIELD MAN KILLED

Do you recognise this man from Sheffield?

A fresh appeal has been launched to identify a mystery man who was killed in an accident nearly a decade ago.

The man, previously thought to be called Brian Wallace, died after being hit by a car in Walthamstow, London, 22 January 2015.

According to locals, he spoke with a northern accent and told people in London that he was originally from Sheffield and had family in Yorkshire.

Volunteers for charity Locate International have made enquiries into nearly 400 potential Brian Wallaces, explored various name variations, and pursued numerous leads - all to no avail.

Photographs of the man which were found in his belongings have been released to help identify him.

Locate International is inviting members of the public to submit details about individuals who they have lost contact with over the years, who may in some way resemble this man.

Submissions can be made anonymously if preferred, online, via a QR code, or through the charity’s social media pages.

Locate founder Dave Grimstead said: "The fact that we possess photographs of the man and potential first and second names makes this investigation unlike any other in our history, but we now need to look beyond these names. As we mark 9 years since his death, we want to reiterate that he has not been forgotten, but we do need to look more broadly.

"He deserves to be remembered and properly laid to rest, and we will not stop searching until we achieve that.”

A giant worm with a quirky expression has surfaced in Worrall’s Sycamore Park. Worrallers are expecting local children to come up with a name for the worm and poems about it, in a competition organised by Oughtibridge School. The winner is to be announced next week.

Indie bands The Bluetones and Shed Seven and local High Green international superstars The Artic Monkeys have all sent Leah signed Albums which she raffled off to raise another £1000.

Designed and sculpted by Andrew Vickers at Stoneface, the worm surfaces by the play area. It was funded jointly by a Bradfield Parish Council grant and from donations to Worrall Environmental Group’s funds. Other WEG projects in that park include a small fruit orchard, improved kickabout area, and Shep, the sleeping giant.

£21,000 in under two years raised for poorly children is some achievement.

Mark’s hitting the high notes after 9st weight loss A Dad from Sheffield is pursuing his dream of singing on stage after losing an impressive 9st 2lbs

Mark Marsden, 31, felt his weight affected most aspects of his life and was the root cause of a back injury which left him unable to work for seven months.

He says: “I’d been a big lad ever since I was about nine years old, so it was normal for me – although I was always aware that my weight held me back. As I got older, I was slow, sluggish and had pain in my feet, legs and back all the time. I struggled to get up on time in the morning because everything was so much effort, so I was always late and even that was down to my weight.

“I’ve always loved singing, so alongside my day job as a car body repairer and painter, I sang at parties, weddings and other events.

I had zero confidence though and would constantly be fidgeting and adjusting my clothes because I felt so uncomfortable on stage. I felt like people only saw my weight rather than hearing my voice.”

A day at the funfair with his children Riley, 11, and five-year-old Amelia in 2021 proved the turning point for Mark. He says: “I’d been off work for a while with a bad back injury – I was bed-ridden and relied on my family to look after me. I was just starting to get some mobility back when the kids asked me to take them on a ride at the fair. But the safety bar wouldn’t close, and three staff had to try to push the bar down with a crowd of people watching. In the end we all got off the ride – I felt as though the kids were embarrassed by me. I vowed to never feel like that again.”

Just two days later, Mark walked through the doors of his local Slimming World group. He says: “I’d heard a bit about Slimming World and knew that it was about eating proper food, so it sounded like a

good fit. I thought the group would be full of women and older people, so I was quite surprised to find that I wasn’t the only man there and at how welcome I was made to feel.”

Mark, who lives with his partner Stacey Bradley, 35, enjoyed Slimming World’s healthy eating plan straightaway. He says: “From that first day in group, everyone including my Consultant Caroline was so supportive. She helped me to realise where my excess calories were coming from, and I noticed that I was making unhealthy decisions when I was hungry and in a rush.

I started planning my meals and the other members in the group gave me ideas for packed lunches for work, so I wasn’t grabbing something on the go. In my first week, I lost 16lbs.

“Stacey was supportive too and she was happy for us to adapt our evening meals so that they fit within the plan – Slimming World burgers with sweet potato fries is one of our favourites.

It’s real food so I never feel like I’m on a diet.”

Mike Sumner and wife Zoe, who live in Sheffield, are featured in one of three adverts from the charity the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association as part of its ‘The Love Inside’ campaign. The first will air during tonight’s Coronation Street advert break.

The 60 second advert tells the story of Mike, who is living with MND, and Zoe. Mike, originally from Grimsby, was diagnosed with the disease in 2020 shortly after meeting Zoe on the Channel 4 show First Dates. They became friends and then friendship turned to love, and the couple married in 2022.

The powerful and highly emotive campaign shows the brutality of MND, which destroys people’s bodies and lives and takes so much, while also highlighting the hope - the one thing the disease can’t take is ‘The Love Inside’. The advert shows their formidable connection as they deal day-to-day with the devastating toll MND takes on Mike’s body.

Mike said: “It was important for me to take part because there's so much about MND that's negative and I don't like to admit defeat, so I thought it was important to do something positive in whatever way I could. Since I was diagnosed there are many things I can no

longer do but raising awareness is something I can still do, so I thought why not?

Zoe Sumner Welch, added: “It was important that I supported Mike in doing this, but I also wanted the world to see what life is like with this condition and be part of making a difference. It was a bit overwhelming to have even a small crew with all their equipment in our home because our flat is tiny, but they were so professional and accommodating that it was a good experience.

“Like Mike, I just hope it reaches its aim of raising more awareness and prompting people to have conversations around MND in their day-to-day lives.”

The campaign reflects Coronation Street’s current storyline charting popular character, Paul Foreman’s journey with MND. The team at the MND Association has been supporting the soap with the portrayal of Paul’s character to ensure an accurate depiction as the disease progresses.

MND is a fatal, rapidly progressing disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It attacks the nerves that control movement so muscles no longer work. It can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk and eventually breathe. It affects more than 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time and has no cure.

COMMUNITY GROUP FUNDED TO SUPPORT FUEL POVERTY

A community group has received funding to help those in the local community tackle fuel poverty.

The Northern Powergrid Foundation, established by Northern Powergrid, the company responsible for the electricity distribution network that powers the lives of 8 million people in the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, is passionate about being able to support communities and creating resilient and thriving communities through access to funds.

Upper Don Community Energy, an organisation that aims to promote renewable energy from resources in the Upper Don catchment area for the benefit of the local community and communities of interest received £4,440.07 from the Northern Powergrid Foundation to fund kits that are aimed to improve energy efficiency in homes for those living in fuel poor households in Stocksbridge and Penistone, South Yorkshire.

Upper Don Community Energy’s Community Warming project aims to make the homes of the most disadvantaged of the Upper Don area easier and cheaper to heat and run. The support from the Northern Powergrid Foundation has funded energy efficiency products, such as LED bulbs, foil radiator insulation, door curtains, draft excluders and insulation tape, to be provided to those most disadvantaged in the south Yorkshire area.

Catherine Cotterill, Director said "Upper Don Community Energy and the community are grateful for the support from the Northern Powergrid Foundation to help bridge the fuel poverty gap for households in Upper Don and its surrounding areas. The funds have gone towards materials that will enable households to be more energy efficient and save money on fuel bills - a necessity now with the current energy crisis.”

The funding awarded by the Northern Powergrid Foundation so far across two grant windows has awarded over £860,000 to 60 projects across all the charity’s priorities of energy resilience, fuel poverty and network innovation located within all of Northern Powergrid’s regions. The funded commu-

nities are delivering unique and exciting projects, most of which have a focus in enabling communities to be self-sufficient and resilient. Projects include the establishment or the expansion of community hubs so that community centres can play a vital role in keeping their community safe and warm during power interruptions with the provision of solar panels, heat pumps and generators.

David Wilkin, Northern Powergrid Foundation Trustee said: “The Northern Powergrid Foundation is proud to support Upper Don Community Energy in helping to fund kits for people in the local community, who are living in fuel poor households, to improve the energy efficiency of their homes. The funding will help the most disadvantaged in communities like the one in Stocksbridge and Penistone to access energy efficient products and save money on heating and running costs.”

Adam Johnson: Inquest into ice hockey player's death suspended An inquest into the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson, whose neck was cut during a match, has been suspended as police inquiries continue.

The Nottingham Panthers player was hit in the neck by a skate during a match against the Sheffield Steelers on 28 October.

The 29-year-old was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in November and has since been released on bail.

Sheffield's senior coroner Tanyka Rawden first opened an inquest into Mr Johnson's death last year.

Following a review of the case, her office said on Friday that the suspension would last until July, unless South Yorkshire Police determined no one would be charged with a homicide offence in relation to the death.

TWO SCHOOLS ‘OUTSTANDING’ Two Primary Schools in North Sheffield have retained Outstanding ratings in recent inspections.

Stannington Infant School and Oughtibridge Primary School, who are both part of Peak Edge Academy Trust announced that both received outstanding ratings from Ofsted, making them the first two schools in Sheffield to retain outstanding grades During Section 5 inspections carried out under the current Ofsted framework. Oughtibridge was inspected in November 2023. Stannington was inspected in December 2023.

Peak District Mosaic secures National Lottery funding Peak District Mosaic has secured £557,955 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver its Championing National Parks for Everyone project - helping more people to explore, enjoy and understand the countryside and nature.

The initiative aims to raise awareness of, and improve accessibility to, three national parks – the Peak District, North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales – among ethnically and culturally diverse communities.

Peak District Mosaic is partnering with the three national park authorities to train community champions, support people to visit the parks independently and to consider jobs in the environmental sector.

The Peak District National Park Foundation has also contributed £11,341 as part of match-funding to the project.

NEW CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT APPOINTED Sheffield businessman and communications specialist Alexis Krachai has been appointed as Sheffield Chamber of Commerce’s newest Chamber President.

Alexis brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role, as both Managing Director of specialist communications agency Counter Context, and a leading figure in the region’s business community.

Alexis’ 36-strong agency, which is headquartered in Sheffield, provides consultancy, public affairs and communications services to government and some of the UK’s most transformative property, energy and infrastructure companies.

He is also well-known across the city as a strong advocate for private sector leadership and driving change across the economy.

Alexis is a Non-Executive Director on the Chamber’s board. He led the organisation during the pandemic as Co-Interim Chief Executive, alongside the now permanent Chief Executive Louisa Harrison-Walker.

The Peak District National Park Authority’s Engagement Team will provide line management support as an in-kind contribution and Derbyshire Dales Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) is supporting Mosaic’s charity development.

Championing National Parks for Everyone will build on a long-term partnership between the Peak District National Park Authority and Peak District Mosaic to support diverse communities to experience the countryside. There has been collaboration on a number of projects, including delivery of Peak Wise Community Champion training in 2017 and 2021.

The project will include outreach events, monthly activity programmes in each of the national parks, community champion training, champion-led events and further training in outdoor skills. It will also develop a legacy plan focused on Community Champion network support.

Yvonne Witter, chair of Peak District Mosaic, said: “It is a great privilege for us to be leading this project in partnership with the Peak District, North York Moors

and Yorkshire Dales National Park Authorities.

“National Parks are outstandingly beautiful places.

Being able to visit, enjoy and care for them is hugely beneficial for physical health and mental well-being.

“The support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund means that, working together, we can develop a programme and support diverse communities to learn about the landscapes and to access them for recreational activities and enjoyment.

“Together we will recruit and train people in communities around the three national parks to champion the parks for their friends, families and work colleagues. This will continue the legacy of what began several years ago as a national programme led by the Campaign for National Parks.”

Rachael Lyon, Peak District National Park Authority engagement manager, added: “Peak District Mosaic has already been working to this model for several years and we are building on that legacy. This is a new way of sharing the model and reinvigorating the community champion project.”

Heather McNiff, head of outdoor learning and engagement at the North York Moors National Park Authority, said: “Access to green spaces is so incredibly important to our physical and mental wellbeing and, as we face climate uncertainty, we want to share just how special our landscapes and habitats are, so that as many people as possible feel motivated to want to save them.

“We already work with some fantastic community champions, but the National Parks for Everyone project will allow us to expand this network and offer new events, a monthly activity programme and a series of short films.”

Prizes galore at tough Meltham 10k Sixteen hardy Penistone runners made the trip to Meltham to take part in the notoriously tough Meltham 10k which traverses the hills around Meltham before a final mile downhill to the finish. The runners were rewarded with a good degree of success with three runners picking up first place in their respective age categories.

Suzanne McGill was the first lady back from the club and also picked up first place in the ladies over45 age category. Her time was 47-58. Another lady winner was Barabara Haigh who won the ladies over75 age category.

Martin Ball completed the trio of winners grabbing first place in the men’s over50 age category in an impressive 39-40. Other run-

ners making the podium in their age groups were Bill Phillips (2nd over75 man) and Keith Gordon (3rd over75 man). Andrew Heppenstall was first back for the club in 12th place overall and finished just one place outside the medals in the men’s over40 age category. His time was 37-33.

Rory O’Sullivan also completed a 10k race at the Stockport Daffodil 10k. His time of 49-32 was new personal best for the distance.

On the fells four Penistone runners completed the Tigger Tor fell race, a race known for its steep climbs, exposed ridges and rocky sections. First back was Gareth Irvine in 90th place in 1-24-52. First lady back for the club was Lesley Parker in 1-36-28.

Also on the fells Steve Sanders competed in the Birkrigg Common fell race near Ulveston.

He placed 46th in a field of 148 runners in a time of 27-32.

On the parkrun scene the club held its monthly parkrun on tour with a trip to the Rother Valley parkrun. First back in 31st place was Phil Hinchliffe in 20-11, first lady back was Emma Stead in 122nd place in 2456. Elsewhere George Parr was first at Penistone parkrun and Flynn Rogers was first at Hillsborough juniors.

A number of runners had milestones Jill Scrivens (100), John Howsham (250) and Jackie Howsham (250). Age-graded parkrun runners of the week were Dawn Broom (76.75%), Damian Kilpin (75%), Phil Hinchliffe (74.24%), Keith Gordon (73.45%) and George Parr (70.31%).

Women cricketers in thrilling finish A Mid-season double-header for Oughtibridge Women and Girls cricket team, in the South Yorkshire Indoor League, saw them record well-earned wins.

Oughtibridge Team 1 enjoyed a 'well-earned' win in their local derby against Bradfield Bernadettes. The Bridge batters managed to put on a score of 267, with the loss of only three wickets against the strong Bradfield bowlers. The Bernadette batters then fought hard to chase, but due to some amazing bowling and quick responses in the field

by Oughtibridge, they came up slightly short, finishing on 251/5.

Team 2 played brilliantly in a 'heart in your mouth' game against Darfield Ducks. The Bridge bowled and fielded tremendously.

Lily, Anna, Ros, Lou and Sharon were excellent with the ball and were backed up with good fielding and catching to restrict a very capable Darfield to 252.

Darfield came out fighting with their strongest bowlers against our young guns of Lily and Anna, to take two early wickets which momentarily put the two 14-year-olds on the back foot. All thoughts of this early setback were quickly shaken off though as the two young ladies regrouped and showed amazing maturity to rally and score nicely for the second half of their innings, to post an excellent 19 runs which proved a lovely platform for the next Bridge pair.

Striding confidently to the crease next came Ros and Sharon who duly tucked into the Duck's delicious bowling. With some great running and well-placed shots including a big maximum 6 from Ros, they plundered over 40 runs in their four overs, for the loss of only one wicket.

This left Oughtibridge a healthy 12 ahead for the last Bridge pair of Captain Sonia and powerful Lou. From out of nowhere the Ducks quacked again with two runouts and a catch, to take three quick wickets leaving Oughtibridge back in a chasing position.

While a slightly concerned and overly nervous Coach looked on, it would've been easy for confidence to have been diminished as what once looked like a straightforward victory turned into a war against attrition.

Needless to say, any fear of this was quickly dispelled as once again the mighty Bridge calmed, re-set and went on to pluck the ducks bowling for steady runs for the next three overs to finish once again with a healthy and comfortable winning margin of 21 leaving the Darfield Ducks a little overmatched and overdone.

Valley Hill Runners of S35 were at concord parkrun this Saturday morning running and volunteering. Everyone at the club loves parkrun it's a great social event, if you are at a loose end and feeling a bit fed up come run or pop your name down to help at a parkrun. Match report by: Adam Allcroft Photos: Myra Little If we’re being honest, the only reason we are writing about the first half is so that you know that it actually happened. That’s because it was very incident-free, with neither team able to do much against their opponents organised defence. Jack Watson did win the ball high up but his weak shot was no trouble for Nykah Liburd while Ross Goodwin also had an effort that didn’t trouble the goalkeeper.

But the first half was forgotten by the time the fans bit into their halftime pie.

In the second half, the game was a bit livelier though pretty much anything would have

had more action than the first. It started off with Stocksbridge having a lot more of the ball and creating some actual chances. Charlie Reaney won his aerial battle to get onto the end of a cross, but his header went just centre metres wide. Ross Goodwin was also strong in the air and Liburd clawed his powerful header over the bar.

At the other end, Carlton also struggled to get their attack going with the Steels defence remaining strong. They did have one decent chance with a snap shot from the edge of the box which debutant goalkeeper Harry Garman saw late, but he was still able to get down and make the save. In the end, it was a goalless draw that you’d struggle to write more words than this about.
