FRIENDS TO WALK 30 MILES IN MEMORY OF FRIEND
On 21st September 2024, a group of friends will embark on a 30-mile walk from Headingley Cricket Stadium in Leeds to Thorncliffe Cricket Club in Chapeltown, Sheffield. The walk is in memory of their friend Haris Hussain and aims to raise funds for DKMS, a charity that supported Haris during his battle with leukaemia.
Haris, a talented left-handed cricketer who represented Yorkshire at several age levels, had a passion for sport, excelling in both cricket and ice hockey. He played for Wath Cricket Club and refereed at Sheffield Ice Hockey Clubs, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him. Continued on page 5

80 year old dies in mobility scooter collision
Information sought following fatal road traffic collision in Sheffield Police are appealing for information after an 80-year-old man has sadly died following a road traffic collision in Sheffield.
On Monday (2 September) at 1.24pm, it was reported that a blue Citroen C1 and a mobility scooter were involved in a collision on Penistone Road near to the junction with Herries Road South.
The ambulance service attended and an 80-year-old man, who was riding the mobility scooter, was taken to hospital and has now sadly died. His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Enquiries are ongoing and Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision, or those with relevant dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward. A New Head Teacher
Stocksbridge High School welcomes a new Headteacher this September, and many in the local area will already be familiar with him. Ben Gilder, who previously lived in Stocksbridge, officially started his role in July. Despite his recent official start, he has already had the opportunity to meet all the students, many parents, and members of the community, thanks to a fiveweek handover period with the previous Headteacher, Andy Ireland.
Ben's vision for the school is clear: to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to grow academically, socially, and mor-
ally, leaving the school with the doors to their future pathways firmly open. The school's motto, "Believe, Achieve, Succeed," strongly resonates with him, and the values of "Be Positive, Be Kind, Be Confident, and Be Reflective" will be integral to the new ‘Waves of Recognition’ strategy being implemented this year.

On Friday 6th September, newly elected Labour MP Marie Tidball, visited B. Braun Medical at the company’s UK headquarters in Thorncliffe Park.

Football Team Lend a Hand to Local Legend
This week, Pomona FC stepped up to assist local legend Chris McClure, known for his various talents both on and off the football pitch. McClure, famously the face on the cover of Arctic Monkeys' debut album and brother of Jon McClure, frontman of Reverend and The Makers, is also known by many as Steve Bracknall, assistant manager of the Royal Oak football team.
Pomona FC players helped with the filming of a "friendly" match between themselves and the Royal Oak, part of McClure’s latest project as Steve Bracknall.

SHEFFIELD COUNCIL SENT 28,500 COUNCIL TAX DEBTS TO BAILIFFS IN 2022/23, NATIONAL DEBT LINE REVEALS
Sheffield City Council referred more than 28,500 council tax debts to bailiffs during the 2022/23 financial year, according to research by the debt advice service National Debtline.
The figures, obtained by the charity behind National Debtline, the Money Advice Trust, have prompted renewed calls for the
council to improve it’s debt collection practices.
National Debtline found Sheffield City Council has increased its use of bailiffs (officially called enforcement agents) by 116 per cent since pre-pandemic levels in 2018/19, when most local authorities (59 per cent) have not seen increases at all.

Pomona 5 - 1 Aurora FC
Pomonas pre-season schedule came to an end with a convincing win at home to division two side Aurora FC, a game which Pomona controlled from start to finish.
Still missing first-choice goalkeeper and two new centre-backs through injuries Pomona pressed from the kickoff and played some great football reducing Aurora to long balls forward to kickstart their attacks.
Pomonas early pressure took its toll and they took the lead on 15 minutes with some great play on the left resulting in a great cross from left winger Tim Miles to right winger Jason Allsebrook who headed past the Aurora keeper.
Pomona continued to press and look for a second but they were undone when a pass back to the stand-in keeper was pounced on by the Aurora attacker and finished to make it 1-1 with 25 minutes on the clock.
10 minutes later Pomona were back in front when Simon Bonnett controlled the ball in the area but was tackled just as he was about to pull the trigger, the ball found its way to Tim Myles who scored from the corner of the six-yard box.
Two minutes before the halftime whistle Pomona were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area, Simon Hawleys effort was saved but
striker Simon Bonnett was first to the rebound to put the ball past the keeper for 3-1.
The second half started like the first with Pomona on the front foot.
New Pom signing Andy Thompson causing no end of problems in the Aurora defence, putting the ball in across the face of goal with a low powerful cross from the right for an outstretched Simon Bonnett boot to make contact with but the ball grazed the bottom of the far upright before going wide.
Pomona had to wait until the 70th minute for the 4th a Mark Bell cross from the right evading the Aurora keeper and finding the far top corner of the goal, although I’m sure Mark will be calling that one a shot on goal.
The Pom continued to create chances and sealed the victory on 80 minutes when midfielder Robert Gandy laid the ball off to Simon Hawley who powered the ball home at the near post to make the final score 5-1 to Pomona.
A great way to round off the preseason friendlies as Pomona go into next weekend's first game of the 2024/25 Wragg League Division One season at home against established top division side Athersley Rec FC. Kick-off is at 2pm at The Jubilee Sports and Social.

Sheffield secured their first silverware of the season with victory over Ipswich in the Premiership Knockout Cup Final.

The hosts opened with a 5-1 with Sheffield captain Kyle Howarth hampered by mechanical gremlins before more bike problems ahead of Heat Two, this time for Dan Gilkes. But the Tigers’ Rising Star raced his way into third place behind reserve partner Jason Edwards for a share of the spoils, despite starting from a 15-metre handicap.
Sheffield gated on a 5-1 in Heat Three and whilst Josh Pickering flew off out front to provide them with their first race winner, Chris Holder was passed by both switches representatives Keynan Rew and guest Tom Brennan.
Howarth and Gilkes then conceded a 5-1 in Heat Four before Howarth and Jack Holder took the minor placings in a shared Heat Five.
But Ipswich then reduced the overall deficit to ten points with a 4-2 in Heat Six.
Step forward Pickering and Chris Holder who have steadied the ship on numerous occasions throughout 2024. The Aussie duo worked smartly together on the opening lap to end Danny King’s unbeaten start and bang home an important maximum of their own.
The Tigers gated on another 5-1 in Heat Eight and whilst Howarth cleared off to pick up his first race win of the final, Gilkes was picked off by Dan Thompson and then Adam Ellis by the end of the first lap.
Ipswich restored their ten-point lead on the night when Rew and Brennan struck a maximum over Jack Holder and Edwards But a quick rallying call from team manager Simon Stead in the pits got his riders going as two key races followed.
There was controversy in the initial staging of Heat Ten when the race was stopped, much to the dismay of Stead with his riders outtrapping their opponents. And after consulting video replays, SCB Referee Chris Gay clearly realised he had been a bit hasty on the button as he refused to issue any official warnings.
Thankfully, Pickering and Chris Holder once again flew out of the starts for their second 5-1 of the night together - and it was quickly followed by another for the Tigers.
Jack Holder was so far clear in Heat 11 he slowed off bend four to wheelie over the line to take his first win whilst Howarth rode a clever opening lap to bring the gap back down to two on the night.
Despite Ipswich getting a 4-2 in Heat 12, Chris Holder’s second place was enough mathematically to wrap up the cup - but the Tigers’ celebrations were muted until they couldn’t contain themselves any longer as the Holder brothers eased to a classy 5-1 in Heat 13 to draw
back level.
Ipswich moved back ahead on the night, but Pickering’s outside pass on Dan Thompson meant there were only two points in it going into Heat 15.
And when Pickering zoomed off out front and Howarth held off Brennan for third, the Tigers grabbed a draw despite being ten down with six to go.
Sheffield now take a small break ahead of their ROWE Motor Oil Premiership Semi-Finals.
Their first leg against rivals Belle Vue in Manchester takes place on Monday, September 16 with the decider at Owlerton on Thursday, September 19.
HOMEGROWN TALENT ON SHOW
The Homegrown Arts Festival gets underway later this month with a host of events focussed on the creative spirit of the area –there’s a fantastic lineup of events showcasing some of the untapped talent in Stocksbridge and the Upper Don.
From September 28th to October 12th the Homegrown team put together a packed programme of performances, exhibitions and interactive workshops – celebrating everything from creative writing to painting, crafts, poetry, music and acting.
The Homegrown Festival is now in its third year – creating an opportunity for local artists, writers, performers, musicians and makers to showcase their talent. Its also a great opportunity for local people to get involved in new activities and events across the town.
This year’s Homegrown Festival will take place from September 28th to October 12th with dozens of events across the festival fortnight.
Venues including Stocksbridge Library, Samuels Kitchen, Voyager Artspace, Christchurch and The Venue will be all hosting events and a special Homegrown Makers Market will take place at Fox Valley on Saturday October 12th - the final day of the Festival.

CHURCH SIT AT THE TOP
Penistone Church 4 - 1 Rossington Main
Both Church senior teams were in action last Wednesday night. Church Reserves continued their poor start to the season losing twoone at Hepworth United. Despite the loss manager Tom Wright was encouraged by his teams improved performance.
Playing at home Church first team entertained Handsworth. They started the game well and went in at halftime two goals up with goals from Nathan Keightley and Leon Hurles-Brook but they would rue missed chances when goals at either end of the second half from Handsworth’s Scott Ruthven levelled the score line, the game ending in a two-two draw.
On Saturday Rossington Main were the visitors to the Parker Roofing Memorial Ground when Church continued their NCEL Premier Division campaign hoping to consolidate their position in the early league table. In contrast to their midweek game the afternoon’s rain-
soaked crowd of three-hundred and eight saw Church take their first-half chances with a brace of goals from Nathan Keightley (pictured) and one from Leon HurlesBrook and they went in three-nil up at halftime.
In the second half Nathan completed his hat trick but credit to Rossington’s persistence Manasse Kianga scored a consolation goal for Main late in the game to make the final score four-one and an excellent victory for Church.

We knew we would be up against a very good Rossington side, their current league position doesn’t do them justice.
First half we were excellent both in and out of possession, we had a really good start to the game Nathan Keightley scored relatively early, from a ball down the side of the defender then he’s put it back across the goal to make it one-nil and we were good value for it.
We were disappointed to concede the goal late on but we’re definitely not going to berate the lads because it was an excellent performance from start to finish.
Thanks to all who came along in the unseasonal September weather but we’re used to it at Penistone and when the weather is like that we usually put a decent performance on and that’s what we’ve done today.
We move on to the league cup on Wednesday away at Campion we’ll try and get the squad players some minutes to get them up to speed. We’ll certainly be going up there to get a positive result and be in the hat for the next round.

Oughtibridge are celebrating after advancing to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup with a commanding 4-1 victory over Altofts Ladies FC from Wakefield.
Jen Pearson opened the scoring, followed by a brace from Laura Cain, and a crucial fourth from Codi Melia, after Altofts fought their way back into the game.
Earlier in the day, Oughtibridge’s newly formed Reserves side secured a thrilling 3-2 win over Sheffield Wednesday Reserves, making it a double vic-
tory for the club. Bryony Colgrave found the net, with Courtney Clarke adding two more.
Next up for Oughtibridge is a highly anticipated local derby at home against Sheffield Wednesday’s first team on 22nd September. The match promises to be a spectacle.

SUZANNE AND BILL CROWNED YORKS HM CHAMPS
Suzanne McGill had an excellent run at the Vale of York Half Marathon which also acted as the 2024 Yorkshire Vet Championships for the distance.
She was first in the ladies over 45 age category in a new personal best time of 1-24-35. The time was also a new club record.
There was further success for Penistone at the event with Bill Phillips also crowned Yorkshire champion.
Bill was first in the men's over 75 age category in a time of 1-59-05. There was also a 10k race held alongside the half marathon and Lois Lopez was first in the ladies over50 category. Peter Beever also achieved a personal best at the 10k race, finishing in a time of 46-45. Lois also recently ran the London Big Half Marathon in a time of 1-50-38 and also raised £350 for Heart UK.
Elsewhere Hannah Pedley completed the tough Yorkshireman Off Road Half Marathon in a time of 3-30-00. Hannah was running to raise funds for Barnsley Hospice and so far has raised nearly £200.
Penistone had good representation at the Great North Run, first back was Andrew Pearson in a time of 1-24-02. First lady back was Gemma Nutton with a new personal best time of 1-48-39, she also raised money for Autism Support Dogs.
Redbull 400
This past weekend saw Stocksbridge Running Club members in action across the country and also in Europe. Only one member ran a parkrun and it was David Napier who did Durham parkrun as a warm up to the Great North Run.
The big news for Saturday was Rachel Howard who took part in the RedBull 400, this is the world’s toughest 400m race, where runners from across the globe gain a colossal 140m in height as they sprint up steep ski jumping. Rachel was 5th in her heat which qualified her for the A final for the fastest 35 times and she did amazing to come 18th overall.
Sunday saw runners take part in half marathons. Firstly Charlotte Carr set a new personal best time at the Vale of York HM in a time of 1:53.08. Rachel Vernon didn’t have the best of days with logistical nightmare with the parking but still made sure it did not stop her clocking up another 21KM in the race to crown the clubs first ever Long Distance Championship by completing the Cheshire HM.
We then had two runners complete at the iconic Great North Run. Victoria who ran for a charity completed it for the 2nd year in a row and David Napier set a new club M50 record in 1:44:44.
George Parr continued his winning streak by claiming first place at the Higham Hurtle. He completed the 5 ½ mile off road race in a time of 30-02.
Harriet Drouin was second lady in a time of 45-05. Alan Knox was first in the men's over70 age category and Barbara Haigh was first in the ladies over70 age category. At the end of the race series winners were announced and Tracy Woodward picked up the trophy for first lady over the three race series.
In the men's competition Alan Knox was second, Chris Deacon third and Stu Smith fifth. Two junior members of Penistone took part in the Junior Great North Run, Lauren Lees was 96th in the girls under12 category in a time of 22-01 and sister Millie Lees was 164th in the girls under14 age category in a time of 27-52.
On the fells Harriet Drouin completed the Great Longstone Fell Race in 46-23. Shaun Swallow was part of a team taking part in the Kinder Beer Barrel Race which involves carrying a keg of beer up and down Kinder Scout. His team managed to grab third place.
On the Parkrun scene James Mumford was first at Nostell Priory, George Parr second at Barnsley and Hannah Shaw second at Sherwood Pines. Sara Wolstenholme did her 50th Parkrun at Nostell Priory. Age graded performances of the week were Richard Cottam (77.25%), James Mumford (74.30%), Sue Hall
CHAPELTOWN RBL SLIP IN OPENER
Stannington Village 5-2 Chapeltown RBL
RBL started the season with an away defeat at Stannington Village.
An even first half saw Legion go in front when Jay Carter found the roof of the net, but Stannington went in at halftime leading after two quick-fire goals.
Chapeltown started the second half well with Carter forcing an outstanding save from the Village keeper as they searched for an equaliser.
Ahmed Tahar’s shouts for a penalty were waved away, and
Luca Defalco curled home from the edge of the box with 15 minutes left to restore Stanningtons 2 goal lead.
Luis Afonso-Ferreira caused plenty of problems down the right, and his run and cross found Jed Phillips, whose shot was saved and poked home for Carters second with 10 minutes left.
As RBL pushed forward late on Stannington countered well scoring 2 similar goals in injury time to wrap the win up.
Captain Hits Parkrun Milestone
Christopher Grayson, male captain of Valley Hill Runners, has been unable to compete recently due to injury, but that hasn't stopped him from supporting his local Parkrun. While sidelined, Grayson has dedicated more time to volunteering, ensuring others can still take part.
On Saturday, Grayson celebrated two significant milestones at the Concord Parkrun, completing his 50th run and volunteering for the 200th time.
The event saw a warm cheer from the
crowd, recognising the vital role volunteers like Chris play in keeping Parkrun going each week.
"Without volunteers, there’s no Parkrun," said Concord race director Angela. "Chris is a perfect example of the dedication it takes to make these events happen."
Parkrun depends on the commitment of volunteers to operate, and Saturday’s celebration was a reminder of the community spirit that drives these weekly runs forward.

STEELS CRUISE INTO NEXT ROUND
Park Steels 3 - 0 Widnes
Stocksbridge Park Steels blew Widnes away to book a place in the next round of the FA Trophy.
Widnes started off as the better side and pushed forwards to try and get an early lead. A lofted cross from the right seemed to hang in the air forever until Paul Kyffin volleyed it goalwards for it to be blocked.
The following shot from Liam Paton would be sent wide. Ben Townsend, making his second debut with the club, would make another key save in the early moments.
Eventually, Stocksbridge were able to get a foothold in the game and turn things around. And they were able to make their positive play reap awards. Tom Charlesworth got space on the right wing and put in a powerful cross. No one was in the area for it, but Ste Irwin would end up turning it into his own net and give Stocksbridge the lead.
In the second half, Stocksbridge were able to take complete control of the game. George Hassall had
just come onto the pitch for Widnes and his first action was to lose the ball to Joao Silva. He was then able to outpace the defenders, go one-on-one with former EFL goalkeeper Mark Halstead before simply passing the ball into the bottom corner.
Widnes tried to rally and cause problems so they could get back into the game but they weren’t able to create much. The clos-
est they came to scored was when a corner wasn’t properly cleared leading to some chaos in the box but Stocksbridge’s defence remained strong and blocked any shots.
The game would be finished off as a contest in the 80th minute. Kurtis Turner’s free-kick evaded everyone and would eventually hit the post, almost sneaking in. But as the ball rebounded into the six-
yard area and Elliot Owen reacted first to knock the ball in, sealing a place in the next round of the FA Trophy.

STOCKSBRIDGE IMPROVE DESPITE DEFEAT’
A repeat trip to West Yorkshire to face Knottingley RUFC provided an improved performance from Globe Holidays-sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby however, the plucky visitors eventually succumbed to a 27pts to 14pts defeat in Round 1 of the Yorkshire 4 Counties league campaign.

Stocksbridge were able to select the returning Joe Smith in the front row, with newcomer George Watts being given his debut at No 8.
A simple penalty gave the home side an early lead, this was compounded by an injury to Tim Burton, The visitors had their share of both territory and possession, but the home side took advantage of their opportunities to rack up three first half tries, leaving the half time score : Knottingley RUFC 24pts –Stocksbridge Rugby nil.
Two early yellow cards for the hosts allowed Stocksbridge some ascendency & Jack ‘crazy feet’ Spencer found a gap to dance through an overworked defence to register Stocksbridge’s first try of the campaign, youngster Tom
Kerr added the conversion, as he did when the impressive Joe Smith crashed over for a further Stocksbridge score, after more good work from the hardworking forward pack. The only Knottingley score in the 2nd half was a penalty, showing some nervy respect for their committed opponents to bring the event to a close with a final score of Knottingley RUFC 27pts –Stocksbridge Rugby 14pts.
An improving display from the travelling Stocksbridge squad, who will now turn their attention to next week’s Round 2 clash away at Sheffield Medics. A fixture which has been reversed due to the on-going pitch drainage maintenance at the Coal Pit Lane arena.
A Man of the Match performance from veteran enforcer Joe Smith on his return, & encouraging words from Skipper, ‘clock tower’ Andy Beal who said, ‘we have improved from our first hit out, & have a good platform to build on’, adding, ‘we are looking forward to the season & feel we have a point to prove’.
