e 85-year-old has apologised for reposting some comments but said he would appeal against his suspension. He denied he was antisemitic. Labour said it could not comment on individual cases as its disciplinary hearings were con dential.

Mr Price remains a city councillor but has had the Labour whip removed.

"I didn't mean to upset people," he said.

'Quite upset by it all'

"I'm just very uptight and distraught about what is happening in Gaza.

"It's terrible seeing children being bombed and I felt something had to be said so I shared a few proPalestine tweets but someone took o ence to them and apparently I crossed a line.

"I am really not antisemitic, being called that has been the worst part of all this, I am quite upset by it all as I've been a councillor for 52 years." Although the Labour Party said it could not comment on Mr Price's case, a spokesman said: "Keir Starmer has changed Labour so that it is unrecognisable from the party of 2019, and has pulled out antisemitism by its roots.

"We will continue to ght antisemitism, it has no place in the Labour Party or wider society."

Mr Price was due to stand down at the next council elections in May.

Local Scouts Food Drive

In a heartening display of community spirit, the 3rd Stocksbridge Scouts Group's Beaver Section took charge at Monday night’s Beaver meeting, showcasing the posters they cra ed to promote an upcoming food drive bene ting the Stocksbridge Food Bank.

e Beavers, along with their counterparts in the Cubs, poured their creativity into designing posters aimed at raising awareness for the drive. ese posters will soon adorn the halls of local schools, acting as beacons for generosity and solidarity.

From March 11th to March 22nd, these posters will serve as reminders for the community to rally together and contribute to the cause. e Scouts will be stationed at these schools, eagerly collecting donations from willing donors. e drive aims to stock the shelves of the Stocksbridge Food Bank with essential items to assist those in need. Among the items urgently required are longlife milk, sugar, toilet rolls, ready-pasta meals, pasta sauce, soup, tinned meat, hotdogs, rice pudding, tinned fruit, custard, and toiletries.

"Every donation, no matter how big or small, will make a signi cant di erence in the lives of those facing hardship," remarked one of the Scout leaders. "We encourage everyone to participate and extend their support to our community members in need."

e Scouts express their gratitude in advance to all who participate and emphasize that all donations will be warmly received.

MAJOR EXHIBIT OF MINERS’ STRIKE OPENS

A major yearlong exhibition commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike opens at the National Coal Mining Museum for England this week.

84/85 – The Longest Year opens on Wednesday 6 March 2024, exactly 40 years to the day since the beginning of the strike and will run until the anniversary of the end of the strike, Monday 3 March 2025.

The free exhibition focusses on the experiences of miners and their families, giving a voice to three different points of view: striking miners, those that went back early and those that didn’t strike at all.

Walking through the space, visitors will uncover the story of the Miners’ Strike from those that experienced it with opportunities to listen to interviews, watch archive footage, read compelling quotes, absorb powerful photography and see artefacts from 1984/85.

Following on from a public call out in November 2023, over 100 people across the country came forward with their memories of the strike. Each of these memories have been added to the Museum’s collection and a number have been featured in the exhibition. This public call out will remain open for the rest of the year for people

to share their own stories (anonymously if preferred), allowing future generations to discover them at the Museum for decades to come. The Museum intends to refresh the exhibition and to collate these submissions later in the year.

Designed with local specialists, InchPunch, the exhibition is equally split between the three experience categories and allows visitors to bypass or take in each section in their own time. With opportunities to reflect and share thoughts, visitors can also contemplate what they are willing to strike for 40 years on.

Alongside the exhibition, a packed events programme is planned with workshops, performances, discussions, film screenings and more throughout the year. More details are to be announced on the Museum’s website, ncm.org.uk/84-85

Plans approved for All Wheels Park

Plans for a brand new all-wheel park in Stocksbridge have been given the go-ahead – with work due to start on the new development in April.

The planning application for the new facility at Oxley Park has been approved by Sheffield City Council. It means that work can now get underway on the final part of the Stocksbridge Town Deal funded project to invest in improvements at the park.

The all-wheel park has been designed in consultation with the Friends of Oxley Park to be suitable for bikes and scooters as well as for skateboarding, wheelchair motocross (WCMX) and roller booters.

The design incorporates smaller features for novice riders to learn to ride as well as more challenging areas for experienced riders.

The current skatepark’s large structures, which are currently underused, will be removed and replaced with sustainable construction methods using concrete coloured grey and green. The footprint has been reduced by more than half with a modern and low-profile design.

Landscaped areas with trees and wildflowers will be included - enhancing biodiversity and creating

an attractive area for local residents and park users.

Sheffield City Council’s Parks and Countryside team have worked closely with the Friends of Oxley Park as well as the contractors Canvas Spaces to create a facility which fits in with the area as well as catering for all skill levels.

The all-wheels park is part of the £690,000 investment at Oxley Park through the Stocksbridge Town Deal. Other improvements include new footpaths and landscaping as well as new Electric Vehicle chargers at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre.

Cllr Julie Grocutt, Town Deal Board Champion for the Oxley Park Improvement Project, said:

“We are really pleased that the plans for the new all-wheels park have now been approved – it’s a great milestone to reach in a project which is going to make such a difference to our local park here in Stocksbridge.

“The designs have been a real collaboration of ideas, and we can’t wait to see people of all ages and abilities enjoying this brand-new facility in the park later in the year.”

ARTIST GAINS RECOGNITION

Green Moor Artist, John Kerr has been gaining steady recognition for his artwork.

Since retiring from The Sheffield College as Art and Photography Lecturer John has been able to spend more time on his paintings.

Recently selected as an entrant in the Cooper Gallery's Open Art Exhibition, John has discovered that the Trustees of the gallery have purchased his painting “Rock Pool 3” for inclusion in the permanent collection of the Cooper Gallery.

The Gallery are delighted with the acquisition. They said: “It will be a fabulous addition to the galleries collection”.

John is thrilled that his artwork has achieved this level of acknowledgement.

The exhibition continues until the 6th of April at the Cooper Gallery, Barnsley.

Some of John’s work can also be seen at Voyager Art Space on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge.

Police responses 'woeful' - watchdog

South Yorkshire Police has "let people down" with its failure to adequately respond to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, a regulator has said.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said the force had "woefully" fallen short of meeting its legal requirements.

The force had a backlog of nearly 400 unanswered requests, which it has been told to clear by the end of August this year.

South Yorkshire Police said it was sorry for the delays and it was hiring more staff to reduce the delays.

FOI requests are typically submitted to public bodies by journalists, campaigners and members of the public to obtain certain types of information.

Legally, organisations have to respond with the information within 20 working days, provided certain exemptions do not apply. The commissioner said the force's compliance rate for most of last year was less than 18%, which it described as "unacceptable on any level".

REDS VISIT PENISTONE GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Professional footballers Donovan Pines, Conor Grant and Aiden Marsh visited Penistone Grammar School to talk to students.

Members of the Barnsley FC squad went to the local school, Penistone Grammar, to talk to Y8 & Y9 pupils about their professional and the applicable lessons they learnt in school which benefitted their journey into professional football.

Pines arrived at Oakwell in January 2024 from the US, joining from DC United in the MLS. Donovan provided an insight into his move and the challenges that brought, whilst informing students of his desire to continue learning in adulthood – currently partaking in a degree in social sciences.

Another January addition, Conor Grant, spoke of his story becoming a professional footballer and arriving from the Republic of Ireland as a youngster to South Yorkshire to join Sheffield Wednesday.

Local lad Aiden Marsh chatted about his upbringing in Barnsley and what it takes to become a professional footballer amongst the many others of a similar age hoping to achieve their dream.

The Q&A session gave the students invaluable insight into the life of a professional footballer and what it takes to become an elite athlete in the hope of providing advice and inspiration to the pupils as they continue their education.

RARE DEF LEPPARD SINGLE IS AN EBAY HIT

A rare first edition EP by Sheffield rock legends Def Leppard was a hit for St Luke’s Hospice when it sold for more than £1,000 with the charity’s eBay shop.

The Def Leppard EP was the 1979 debut self-produced recording by the iconic Sheffield Heavy Metal band.

Only a thousand copies were initially produced, with lead singer Joe Elliott and his mum glueing the sleeves themselves.

Released in January 1979, the single was sold for just £1 at shows and was distributed to anyone the band felt could help them gain exposure - Elliott even jumped on stage at Sheffield University during a John Peel DJ session to hand-deliver a copy which did then get Radio 1 air time.

The team at the St Luke’s eBay store were, therefore, delighted when one of the few surviving copies of the Def Leppard EP was donated for sale and the bids started to come in, with a launch price of £600 quickly reaching £1,022 and going to a buyer in Switzerland.

“Our team is always looking through the many donations we receive for those very special items which we believe will make the most money for St Luke’s through our fantastic eBay site,” said the charity’s e-commerce development Manager Sarah Conrad.

“This was especially exciting as Def Leppard are Sheffield legends and we knew there would be a lot of local interest but the joy of eBay is that it’s global and so the interest was even greater than we anticipated.

“It’s just one more example of why you should look at the St Luke’s eBay page – because you never know what great bargains you might pick up!”

Turn over a new leaf by becoming a puppy socialiser

HEAD along to Chapeltown Library to find out how you can help to nurture a life-changing dog.

The Sheffield-based Support Dogs charity, which trains and provides assistance dogs to help autistic children, as well as people with epilepsy or a physical disability, is hosting a puppy socialiser information session at the library, in Nether Ley Avenue.

It runs from 11am on Monday, March 11 and provides an opportunity for potential volunteers to find out about the important role of a puppy socialiser.

Puppy socialisers provide a loving home for a gorgeous support dog puppy from eight weeks old for 12 to 18 months. Volunteers need to be at home for the majority of the day and have a secure garden.

Stocksbridge Community Forum

Forty Five people attended, including Amanda Holmes (AH), lead SCC o cer for our Townsfund Projects and three Board members. AH was asked to describe the plans submitted to SCC for approval.

Projects were divided into Phases 1 and 2. Phase 1 contains all the Town Centre projects plus the Hopper service, whilst Phase 2 covers the Park Steels and Rugby Club projects.

Most of the discussion was centred on the Phase 1 Manchester Rd (MR)plans.

A new build is planned for the corner of MR / Johnson Street with a frontage beginning at the back of where the raised beds currently stand. All the buildings currently standing will be knocked down upto and excluding what was the Factory Shop which is currently for sale.

e new build has 10,000 sq feet of rentable o ce space besides housing the library which is planned to have exible space which could be used for drama and other events. e size of the library will be a little larger than the existing one. A community space has been built in as well as a large cafe.

Classrooms have been planned for the top oor.

Outside the area would be landscaped, leading to the town square where there would be usable community space. e precinct area is planned for redevelopment with the shops having new frontages and the parking space being taken back towards the shops giving more of a gap between parking and vehicles travelling along MR.

A new inter-valley bus service referred to as the Hopper should come into use by the summer. Funding is given for three years which should help it stand on it’s own wheels. Planning the route will be an interesting process! It is planned to link up with the 57 services and concessionary passes to be used.

Cllr Julie Grocutt, a member of the Townsfund Board, made the point that the Board had to work to criteria, namely job creation and economical activity.

Several people made the point that the funding would be better spent looking a er what we’ve got, not knocking down to rebuild. ere was already lots of empty space in the Valley, the old factory shop and the old Coop Department store, within a stone’s throw of the new build.

With regard to the new build, people questioned the need for a cafe which would be in competition with cafe businesses further down the road, and when several good cafes had closed over the last year or two. And why is the “cafe” so large?

People agreed that meeting places which were up and running should be supported, and didn’t want extra competition for these places.

e new hopper service was popular, as was the face-li for the precinct shops. e meeting urged the Board to get those projects up and running rst.

Who is providing the money? e Government through its “levelling up” scheme.

Who will own the new build? Initially She eld City Council. A er completion, it will be handed over to a community group-probably a new community bene t group- to manage the building.

e make-up of such a group needs to be carefully discussed openly and agreed on. Any pro t will be available for community use.

When does the money need spending by? 2026

Will the library pay rent to this new group? Not known at this stage.

Who will pay for the salaries of the librarians? Ditto.

Why is payment for buildings acquired for this development so slow to be paid?

Although a few extra car parking spaces are being build in to this plan, car parking is di cult now.

e All Wheels Skate Park on Oxley Park seems to be going ahead, as is the footpath around Oxley Park.

Yesterday’s Government data revealed that shockingly, rough sleeping in England has risen 27% in the past year. And more than doubled since 2010. ese aren’t just statistics, they are people, thousands of people, who’s lives have fallen apart in a terrible way and haven’t had the support and back up they need at that critical moment. As a result they are sleeping on our streets each night.

is just should not be happening. One important way to reduce the number of people rough sleeping is to break the link between rough sleeping and the criminal justice system. A third of rough sleepers have been in prison, and we know hundreds of people leave prison into homelessness every month. is is despite the importance of stable housing in reducing reo ending. Where there are key moments like leaving prison, and someone is at risk of homelessness, we need to ensure that everything possible is done to help people nd and keep a home for the long term.

We have recently had a lea et drop in Chapeltown from the Tories. e big story is that there is an increase in Police on the streets. But this is a half-truth at best. In the years of Coalition and successive Tory Governments Police numbers have been drastically reduced and only now at the end of this is there a small upturn.

e lea et also talks of the way that Rishi is getting things right. Yet most of those attacking him comes from his own party including Ms Cates. ey have already dismissed three Prime Ministers and they will surely do the same to Rishi, a er the election.

Some months ago I asked members of Eccles eld Parish Council where I live if they had any contact with Miriam Cates. ey told me that on numerous occasions they had sought a meeting with her but nothing had ever come of it.

Retired Bus Driver Takes the Wheel for Comic Relief Fundraising Effort

Retired bus driver Rob Hallam, 79, is gearing up for a special fundraising mission in support of Comic Relief. Armed with his trusty old bus driver's uniform and a signature Red Nose, Rob, a resident of Grenoside, is set to hit the streets to raise vital funds for the charity.

Having retired from his role at the Herries Road Bus depot/garages in 2010, Rob is no stranger to the streets of She eld. Now, he's embarking on a new journey, one that aims to surpass his previous fundraising achievements.

With fond memories of his past fundraising e orts in 2019, where he raised an impressive £1223.45, Rob is setting his sights even higher this year. Determined to make a di erence, he's committed to collecting donations across the S6, S35, and S36 areas over the coming weeks.

Rob's dedication to the cause is not only admirable but also a testament to the enduring spirit of giving within the local community. As he prepares to don his uniform and don the iconic Red Nose once again, residents are eagerly anticipating his presence on their streets. UNSAFE JUNCTION AT HOLLIN BUSH

On Wednesday 27th February 2024 there was no warning regarding the 40 foot lorries that reverse into the work site blocking all four roads at this junction. e road is thick with mud and clay, pedestrians get no warning of 40 lorry and then have to walk through 2 or 3 inches of clay and mud to get to the other side of the road. I don’t Know what that road sweeper is for as all it does is spread it and make more mess going down the hill towards Royd Junior School. Besides the mud and clay don’t forget the pot holes going uphill on Carr Road, no pot holes before building work started but now its started to get them. People should note about the development of 9-11 Woodroyd Road into a site with thick mud and clay, there are no pot holes yet but this could all change any time soon when work starts.

Mr Hinchey rang up planning o cer Marcus Young about the mess but he said he would only be dealing with 9-11 Woodroyd Road and that hasn’t started yet.

So now its election year 2024, what do our candidates say about the above.Local people around here have to put up with our points ignored and people that voted in the last 10 years say whats the point in voting when city Councillors overrule our own elected by local people. So if the election turn out is low this year, don’t blame it on the weather just look back over the last 10 years and you’ll get the message loud and clear.

Wool Spinning

Many years ago when I was living in a remote place surrounded by sheep. I decided to take up wool spinning as a hobby. I started with an improvised drop spindle created from a potato and a knitting needle before progressing onto a spinning wheel.

At that time Albert Haigh, from Yew Trees farm, kept a ock of brown and white eeced Jacob sheep. Albert kindly gave me a eece which I spun and knitted into a chunky warm jacket for my elderly Dad. I still wear my Dad's jacket today! It’s always been my warmest woolly and has kept in good condition a er all this time!

On Saturday, the 9th of March from 11 am to 1 pm. I will be demonstrating the art of wool spinning in the Voyager arts and cra s shop situated on the Stockbridge precinct. where you can have a go at spinning with a drop spindle. ere is no charge and all are welcome.

Mountain bike community “needs more diversity”

Ride Sheffield hosted its second mountain biking community event on Sunday, in an attempt to tackle the major issues currently facing the sport, writes by Taylor Jones for shefnews.co.uk

Mr Norman, the event organiser, says: “There is definitely a lot of work to do, but we are aiming to include more people of colour”

“Mountain biking is one of those groups that is relatively white and male, but we are looking to create a best practice to make sure that what we are doing can be more inclusive.”

Henry believes that many are “nervous of where to begin because they do not want to do the wrong thing.

“With inclusion, there are a lot of difficult questions that need to be asked and I believe that the media needs to be more representative and not just cover the male stereotype of biking. One of the workshops we are going to be doing is talking about barriers and routes available, and how difficult it is to get into the sport.”

The Reframing event is taking place across two days, with a conference today at The Edge Student Village, Endcliffe, and a trail ride in Parkwood Springs from 10AM tomorrow.

The conference event is a collection of speakers aiming to tackle the major issues facing mountain biking, followed by workshops which will put this into practice.

Catherine Myers, 38, who was attending March 1st’s event, believes that inclusion is “desperately needed”.

“As a collective, we need to be trying to help others and come together to support others, no matter who they are.

“When out on trails, I often find myself in groups of exclusively white people, which is really sad to see.”

Miss Myers has been riding bikes across the country since she was 14.

She said: “Being a women in cycling can be hard, especially with how biking is presented.

“The representation of a macho-man is always associated with the sport and it is time that it changes to be realistic.”

Barnsley engineer’s stem cells now in the centre he helped build ready to help save his life

Darren Dowle saw his own stem cells at the NHS Blood and Transplant centre he helped build – they will be used to help save his life.

Darren, 58, an engineer from Royston, Barnsley, visited the new NHSBT Barnsley centre.

He worked on the creation of the centre in 2018, overseeing the erection of the steel frame.

Darren now has myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer. During the visit saw his own frozen stem cells, which were collected by the NHSBT’s Therapeutic Apheresis Services Unit in Sheffield.

Darren will receive his stem cells back following chemotherapy. The chemotherapy will kill his cancer cells but could also damage his bone marrow, which is where cells are made, putting him at risk of bleeding and infections. The reinfusion of his own stem cells should help his bone marrow recover within a week or two.

During the visit, Darren met staff including the nurse who collected his stem cells, the driver who transported his cells, and the scientists who processed and stored them. He said: “The visit was so interesting. Not many people get that chance. It was unbelievable.

“I helped build it. I was the engineer for the steel erecting company T&A Construction and Compass Engineering.

“You could see the outline of the steel frame in the stem cell storage room itself and you can see the frame itself at the entrance.

“More people need to understand how stem cells work. When I went in to have my cells collected, there were people were just going in to donate. Young people. I thought that was brilliant. Just to help other people out. Absolute magic.”

He added: “I want to carry on as long as I can. You don’t realise what you will get in later life. The treatment means everything.”

NHSBT seen a rise in the number of stem cell collections we’re asked to provide. NHS Blood and Transplant made

498 stem cell collections in Yorkshire in 2020 and 875 in 2023. Nationally, collections went from 1193 in 2020 to 1751 in 2023.

Dr Khaled El-Ghariani, NHSBT Consultant for Therapeutic Apheresis Services in Yorkshire, said: “There are various reasons why we have seen more stem cell collections in recent years.

“Clinical skills have improved. Transplants are now offered to people such as older age groups and people with clinical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, who did not have transplants years ago.

“More indications are also emerging, for example people with illnesses such as sickle cell - this was not the case years ago.

“We also have a bigger donor registry now. Darren will have his own cells back but for many other conditions we need a donor to provide the cells. We still need more donors to join the British Bone Marrow Registry, especially those of south Asian and African Caribbean heritage.”

Stem cells transplants are mostly used when there is an issue stopping your bone marrow from working properly. They are mostly used for blood cancers such as leukaemia.

NHS Blood and Transplant especially needs men under 40 to join the British Bone Marrow Registry (BBMR) –they are more likely to be able to provider high numbers of healthy stem cells with less potential complications – and also black and Asian men and women under 40 due to the shortage of ethnically matched donors for people in those populations. The Barnsley centre opened in 2021 and provides blood, organ, stem cell and other related medical products to 39 hospitals in the north of England. The many teams and functions at the centre include specialist training laboratories, cellular and molecular therapies, blood and organ compatibility testing and specialist nurses in organ donation.

TIGERS LOOKING FOR A STRONG START

SHEFFIELD skipper Kyle Howarth is targeting early victories in the Sports Insure Premiership to help them gain instant momentum.

The reigning Champions kick off their league programme away to the top flight’s two newcomers Oxford (Thursday, March 21) and Birmingham (Monday, March 25).

Howarth’s testimonial event on Thursday, March 14 will see the Tru7 Group Tigers get some early laps in as a team at Owlerton before hosting Oxford on Thursday, March 28.

And while the 30-year-old is expecting a tough title defence this term, he believes the fact Sheffield have included seven riders from last season’s glory campaign can play a big part.

“The team is looking solid from 1-7, it’s looking great and it’s a Grand Final winning contender again,” Howarth said.

“Steady (Simon Stead - team manager) got a great atmosphere going in the team last year and there’s no reason why we can’t have that again.

“If we can keep the team injury-free, get the ball rolling early on and get some really big wins early on then there’s no reason why we can’t follow that on through the season.”

‘PLUCKY STOCKSBRIDGE LOSE DOUBLE HEADER’

Due to the bad weather causing matches to be postponed, Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby played backto-back matches against East Coast rivals Hessle RUFC, unfortunately coming second best on both occasions.

The previous week at the Coal Pit Lane Arena saw visitors Hessle snatch victory with the final play of the game to take the points and the win despite a great effort from the whole Stocksbridge squad, for whom Callum ‘whippet’ Green, sponsored by Mr Connor Brown and Jack ‘milky’ Martin, sponsored by Asphalt Grid Systems crossed for tries, with veteran goal kicker Scotty Bowskill converting one and add-

ing a penalty as a half time 12 all stalemate ended with a final score of : Stocksbridge Rugby 15pts – Hessle RUFC 19pts.

The Premier Stone Worktops Man of the Match award went to skipper, that man Adam Frith, sponsored by Bob Mills Painters and Decorators for a near-complete performance with clever distribution and some astute kicking, whilst cajoling his troops throughout a gritty performance.

Stocksbridge Rugby then made the trip to the East Coast to play the return fixture under the shadow of the Humber Bridge, and came unstuck on a heavy, water-logged surface, eventually falling to a 31pts to 7pts defeat. The scoreline does

not do justice to a committed Stocksbridge display without stalwarts Aspin and Whitaker, as both sides played out a scoreless first half, with the visitors looking the most likely to score as Bowskill cleverly marshalled the young fizzing back line, giving Hannah and Norman opportunities to show their skills and pace. Jordan ‘spud’ Fletcher was shown a yellow card for a high shot in the tackle, and Bowskill narrowly failed with a 40 metre penalty effort as the half ended at nil – nil. Hessle came out of the blocks firing for the 2nd stanza and opened the scoring with a simple penalty, they then extended their lead with 3 quickfire tries as the blue wall failed to cope with a controversial sending-off, and a clear mistaken identity from the official. Fletcher then turned from zero to hero as he dived over for a well-taken try after a concerted forwards effort, Bowskill converted, but again, despite being a man down with a yellow card for a high tackle, Hessle claimed a last-minute bonus point try to leave the scoreline ; Hessle RUFC 31pts – Stocksbridge Rugby 7pts.

These results leave Stocksbridge bottom of the Counties 4 Yorkshire (Phase 2) South league ladder on points difference and Head Coach, Andy Lawrence praised his side in defeat as he reflected, ’small margins are costing us, they took their chances and we couldn’t quite turn ours into points, it’s that close.’ Before adding, ‘I’m confident that another victory is just around the corner for the boys’. Stocksbridge also lost recent signing Laurie Faux with a knee injury and he will be assessed during the week. This week’s Bradfield Brewery Man of the Match award went to young flyer Logan Hannah for a committed display, particularly in defence and posing a great threat in attack. Stocksbridge Park Steels couldn’t complete a comeback against promotion chasing Hebburn Town.

It started off badly for Stocksbridge. A long ball over the top cut through the defence and Amar Purewal was able to time his run perfectly to get past the defence and then finish past Ben Townsend, though with a help with a divot on the pitch. It was the worst possible start for Stocksbridge. The Steels struggled to get into the game and make their attacks stick, meaning it looked more likely that Hebburn would extend their lead. They weren’t far off when Liam Noble had an effort from distance, but he was denied a debut goal by a great diving save from Townsend.

A big moment would soon happen. Charlie Reaney got the better of his man and went one-on-one with Hebburn keeper Kieran Hunter. Hunter would trip Reaney as he went through, leading to a free kick on the edge of the box. Hunter would just get booked and proved how important that was by making an impressive save from Tomas Poole’s strike. There would be chaos in the box after this, but Hebburn were able to defend and clear.

In the second half, Stocksbridge had tilted the momentum in their favour but this wasn’t helping them to create clear cut chances. But as they were pouring men forward, Hebburn were able to pounce. They countered through Alpha Umaro Djalo who the linesman judged him to be onside despite

claims to the contrary and played a great ball across to fellow substitute Leo Robinson who finished well to double their lead.

Stocksbridge wasn't finished though. Luke Hogg got pushed in the box and while it was a light one, the Steels got a penalty. Luke Rawson stepped up and scored, sending Hunter the wrong way. This allowed Stocksbridge to throw everything at Hebburn to get an equaliser but they weren’t able to get the point.

Oughtibtidge WM Women 1-0 Gainsborough Trinity Women

Oughtibridge got the result they needed against the league leaders to give themselves a chance of promotion back to the EM Premier League.

It was an early goal that won it from the returning Codi Melia after some neat interplay on the edge of the box and a cool finish into the bottom corner.

Oughtibridge were dominant throughout but couldn’t find a 2nd to make it comfortable so Trinity were never out of it. Player Manager Laura Watton was deservedly awarded Player of the Match for an outstanding midfield performance.

CHAPELTOWN READY FOR FINAL PUSH

Chapeltown RBL were without a game this weekend, as they entered the final third of the season.

Captained by Josh Savage, the team have won their last 5 games and are unbeaten since November.

The club won the Division One title in 2023 and Division Two title in 2022, as they now prepare for the final 7 games in the CBC Premier Division - in manager Adam Todd’s third season in charge.

Jed Phillips is the leading scorer with 12 goals, whilst Luis Afonso-Ferreira has provided his teammates with 7 assists. Dave Millen and Lewis Fox have been ever-present in all 14 games this season, closely followed by Morgan Cowell who grabbed his fifth goal of the season last week.

The week’s main event was on Wednesday in the Sheffield Senior Cup when Church entertained Stocksbridge Park Steels for a place in the final against Worksop.

In a weather-affected game both teams cancelled each other out and after ninety minutes of play no goals were scored and the game went straight to penalties.

The eight-round shootout swung either way and the heroes of the night were keepers Harry Ambler (pictured) for Church and Ben Townsend for Steels both making three saves each.

Jordan Coduri held his nerve to score the sixteenth and winning penalty to seal the game and a place for Church in the Sheffield Senior Cup Final.

It’s a great night for Penistone Church, as a management team we’re so proud of the players and it’s something for us to give back to the volunteers and everyone who works so hard in the club.

First half we were excellent defensively, I’m not saying Stocksbridge offered loads of threats but we defended what we had to defend. We got chances through Ant Brown, Nathan Keightley, Kieran Ryan and Leon Hurles-Brook.

Nathan’s broke the line and the defender’s brought him down, I’m not sure what the referee has seen there, it’s a sending off to be fair because he’s the last man. It’s a decision that’s gone against us but it hasn’t cost us so I’ll not harp on about it.

In the second half the wind and rain got a little bit worse and it became a difficult game I don’t think anyone had the better of the half, we nullified everybody’s threats.

It looked like after seventy-five or eighty minutes that it was going to go to the lottery of penalties and we came up trumps with that.

You have to say Harry Ambler has pulled three great saves off, as a goalkeeper it doesn’t matter what the penalty is like you have to guess the right way and he’s done it three times.

Penistone runner Peter Beever made the trip into Lancashire to compete in the Take the Fell 10k.

His journey was made worthwhile as he picked up first place in the men’s over50 age category in a time of 1-06-47. Not a pb course the route consisted of a mix of muddy and uneven trails.

Another Penistone runner making a long trip was Andrew Pearson who made the trip down the M1 to compete in the Leicester 10k. Normally a certainty to win his age category Andrew was slightly lower down the field as there was no over55 age category which meant he was in the over50 category and competing with runners several years younger than him. He was still inside the top ten for his age category finishing in ninth place in a time of 37-04. Overall he was in 50th place in a field of 1,000 runners.

Harriet Drouin showed great grit and determination to complete the 10 Res Run which is a challenging 26-mile fell running race. The route takes a scenic loop around Saddleworth Moor, visiting 10 local reservoirs along the way. Conditions were incredibly tough

due to heavy snowfall in the area. Many runners pulled out but Harriet managed to complete the course in just over seven hours. She kindly assisted an injured runner over the final six miles of the race.

On the parkrun scene there were first places for Kai Sunman, Ruby Sykes (both Hillsborough), Suzanne McGill (Penistone) and Flynn Rogers (Hillsborough Juniors). James Mumford picked up third place at the Huddersfield parkrun in 17-40. Dianne McGuinness completed her 150th parkrun at Keswick. Age graded performances of the weekend were Ruby Sykes (82.76%), Kai Sunman (80.71%), James Mumford (79.06%), Suzanne McGill (74.88%) and Damien Kilpin (73.85%).
