Five Arrested in Afternoon Residential Skirmish In an afternoon marked by chaos and violence, Police responded to reports of a disturbance on Sunday, February 18th, The situation escalated quickly as a group of five individuals engaged in a fight involving a bladed weapon.

Police urge anyone with any information regarding the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing inquiries. Individuals can contact South Yorkshire Police at 101, quoting incident number 520 of February 18th, 2024.

Armed officers swiftly descended upon Cedar Road in Stocksbridge, following the disturbance reported at 3.33 pm. Police were bolstered by support from the National Police Air Service, as tensions ran high in the residential neighbourhood.

In a separate incident, Kirklees police are appealing for witnesses after gunshots were fired in Holmfirth on Friday night (February 16).

Following thorough searches of the surrounding properties, law enforcement managed to apprehend the individuals involved. Among those arrested, a 41-year-old man was taken into custody for affray. Additionally, a 32-year-old man faces charges of both affray and child neglect, while a 29-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of child neglect. Moreover, a 30-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were detained for possession of a firearm.

As the investigation unfolds, all five suspects remain in police custody, awaiting further legal proceedings.

HOLMFIRTH SHOOTING

A firearm was discharged on Dunford Road in the town, close to the junction with South Lane, at around 9.50 pm, say police. A man has been arrested and taken into custody in connection with the incident.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson said: “I’d like to reassure people that this was an isolated and targeted incident and that there is no wider threat to the public.

“I would appeal for anyone who was in the area at that time or who may have video footage of the incident, or circumstances leading up to it, to please come forward.”

Mother Voices Frustration Over Council's Handling of Damp and Mould A local mother of three has spoken out about feeling neglected by her council regarding persistent dampness and mould problems in her council home.

Preferring to remain anonymous, the mother, from Oughtibridge revealed that she initially reported the issue to the council in September of 2023. However, it wasn't until November of the same year that the council responded to her complaints and outsourced the work to an external company to address the problem.

Expressing her disappointment, the mother stated, "I feel let down by the council because even though they have started carrying out the repairs, they took

a long time to do it and made us feel like myself and my partner were to blame for the problem."

She further explained the financial strain caused by having to discard damaged items such as clothes, carpets, toys, furniture, and books due to the mould infestation, particularly during the lead-up to Christmas.

According to regulations, councils are expected to resolve damp and mould issues within six weeks of being reported. However, in this case, the mother had to wait until mid-December before any action was taken.

In response to inquiries, the council directed attention to their website, which emphasises their

commitment to addressing damp and mould concerns promptly to ensure the safety and well-being of tenants.

The situation underscores the urgency of addressing dampness and mould in residential properties. Following the tragic death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak, new legislation is on the horizon to compel landlords to take such issues seriously and resolve them within the mandated timeframe.

The mother's case raises concerns about the plight of other families facing similar challenges across the city, prompting questions about the effectiveness of current measures in addressing these issues promptly and adequately.

EX-MARINE DEFIES THE ODDS TO BECOME A PILOT Kristian Newton has always had a passion for aviation but knew from an early age the challenges he’d face to make his dream a reality.

“I remember every time I saw a pilot at the airport when we went on holiday I used to freeze and be completely in awe of them. I used to sit with my grandad for hours and read things about travelling. I was just completely fascinated by it all.

“My mum was a hairdresser and dad was a builder, so I knew I didn’t have the financial backing to pursue aviation as a career, so I made the decision to join the Royal Marines instead.”

Kris, from Stocksbridge, was accepted into the military in 2009 and was deployed to a number of locations including Afghanistan, before he applied to join a specialist maritime unit as part of the UK Special Forces.

“Unfortunately, after five years of working on boats the shock and vibrations meant I developed a neck injury and was medically discharged. After leaving I rehabilitated and realised this could be my chance to follow my aviation dream.”

Following his years in the Royal Marines, Kris started training to get his Private Pilot’s Licence and was about two thirds of the way through when COVID hit and he had to stop.

Kris was working in the construction industry when one of his friends sent him informa-

tion about TUI’s MPL scheme. The scheme trains applicants to become commercial

pilots with no upfront costs or qualifications required.

“I knew this programme was going to be my golden ticket, so I immediately applied. I remember I poured my heart out onto paper in my first cover letter. I really thought this is the last roll of the dice I’ll have to get into aviation. I wanted it so badly; I’d put my heart and soul into it and clearly it worked.

“The charity Wings for Warriors were a big part of coaching me through the application process I'm still pinching myself that I passed.

“Honestly, if I won the lottery tomorrow, I would still be on this scheme. I love it that much. This really is my dream.

“I can’t quite believe I’m going to be doing something every single day that puts such a big smile on my face. I’m sure some mornings I won’t love the 3am wakeup call, but I know what I’m in for, and I know that it will never feel like work to me. It’s exceeded my expectations so far and I’m so looking forward to the pride of getting my wings.”

Kris will be qualified by March 2025, and will become a pilot for TUI. He aspires to be a pilot on 787 aircraft before eventually becoming a First Officer. He even hopes to become part of TUI’s pilot training process and help other aspiring pilots reach their dreams. Kris beat out 6,700 applicants to join TUI’s MPL Cadet Scheme.

CHANGES TO SUPERTRAM Supertram will no longer be run by Stagecoach from the 22nd March onwards. From this date the tram will be run by a company known as South Yorkshire Future Trams Limited on behalf of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA). As the tram will be run by a different operator, Stagecoach tickets will no longer be accepted.

This means that from Friday 22nd March, Stagecoach Gold and Silver tickets will no longer be valid for travel on Supertram. If you have bought a Gold or Silver ticket to use on bus and tram please be sure to use it before this date as it will no longer be accepted. You’ll still be able to

buy and use Silver and Gold tickets on Stagecoach buses in the same way you do now.

The Sheffield student bus & tram MegaRider and the South Yorkshire Child bus & tram DayRider tickets will no longer be sold by Stageocach. These tickets will also not be accepted on Supertram after the 22nd March so if you have bought one please use it before this date.

After the 21st March any new tram tickets will need to be purchased via a new app, from a SYMCA ticket vending machine, or on tram.

Consultation on resuming highways project begins A public consultation on Sheffield City Council's plans to resume its controversial street improvement project has begun, writes Steve Jones for BBC News.

Street trees have been retained under the current designs, which involve building pavements around them and into the road.

Feedback from residents was now being sought "to ensure we can deliver necessary works in the most suitable way," Mr Otten added.

The programme was paused in 2018, with the council later apologising to campaigners and admitting to misleading the public and courts.

But a council spokesperson warned this would leave less space for parking.

The first phase of the consultation will focus on Dunkeld Road, Silver Hill Road and Banner Cross Road.

The consultation concerning 26 roads in the city will consist of six phases, with the first opening on Monday.

A council spokesperson said the resurfacing works were "necessary".

"The council has been working hard to learn from the street tree dispute and agree a way forward to carry out necessary resurfacing on these roads after the programme was paused in 2018," they added.

"The build-outs have been designed in a way which strikes a balance between maintaining sufficient road width for two-way traffic while also ensuring there is enough room to protect the roots of these trees and allow some space for future growth," they said.

Chair of the waste and street scene committee Joe Otten said "a number of stakeholders" had been consulted on the designs.

They were drawn up by Amey, who deliver the council's Streets Ahead highway maintenance contract.

Drop-in sessions will be hosted at Ecclesall Library in February and March to provide more information on the proposals, the council spokesperson said.

A plaque recognising the actions of campaigners who fought to save threatened trees in Sheffield is expected to be installed by the local authority later this year.

FREE The Stocksbridge community is facing a crisis as funding for essential services at the local Food Bank is set to run dry by the end of March.

The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) worker stationed at the Food Bank, who provides invaluable support to the community, will be forced to cease operations until at least July due to lack of funding.

The situation has arisen as the one-off grant provided by the Sheffield City Council to sustain the CAB's work at the Food Bank has expired, with regulations preventing the council from allocating further funds until after the upcoming May elections and subsequent budget allocation in June.

While both council officers and members are eager to secure funding to continue the CAB worker's presence in Stocksbridge, their hands are tied until the bureaucratic processes are complete.

In a desperate bid to bridge the financial gap, the Food Bank itself is scrambling to secure funding to maintain the CAB service until a more sustainable solution can be found. The CAB worker typically assists 6 to 8 individuals every Tuesday, providing crucial support that can have a transformative impact on their lives. For instance, recent success stories include helping individuals write off significant debts totalling £30,000 each and rectifying a decade-old benefits mistake, resulting in nearly £100,000 in reclaimed funds for the community in a single week.

The Food Bank is appealing to local residents to dig deep into their pockets to raise the necessary £7,000 to keep the CAB service operational until July. Despite already raising £2,000 within a week, the Food Bank is urging the community to rally together and contribute towards meeting the shortfall before the end of March. While efforts are underway to secure grants, the urgency of the situation necessitates immediate action.

Although the Food Bank and the Christian Centre, where it is currently based, have received substantial external funding for premises adaptation, these funds cannot be allocated towards sustaining the CAB worker's position.

Rev. Ian Lucraft, the minister at the Christian Centre, emphasised the critical role of the CAB service in transforming lives within the community. He appealed to local organisations, groups, churches, and individuals to consider making a one-off donation to ensure the continuation of this vital service, expressing gratitude for any support offered.

Join the Night Owls Sleep Over

Even the greatest Sheffield Wednesday fan might never have thought about sleeping in their beloved Hillsborough Stadium.

But on March 22 there will be a chance to make that sporting dream come true as the Sheffield Wednesday Community programme joins up with South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout for the Night Owls Sleep Over.

The event will provide a thrilling experience for both families and Sheffield Wednesday fans.

Starting at 8pm on the Friday and going on all the way through to 7am the following morning, there will be a host of fun activities as well as exclusive access to the celebrated football stadium, with an immersive tour of the grounds and a unique chance to explore the historic nooks and crannies that make Hillsborough Stadium legendary.

More importantly, participants will be supporting Roundabout and all the money they raise through sponsorship will help vulnerable young people who are at risk of becoming homeless.

“The annual Roundabout Sleep Out has always been one of our most popular annual events and we have been asked so many times if there was a version the whole family could support,” said

Roundabout Fundraising Manager Emily Bush.

“Now, thanks to the support of the team at Sheffield Wednesday we can introduce the Night Owls Sleep Over, an event we believe will prove very popular with families who support Roundabout and also with football fans looking for a new way to enjoy their favourite sporting venue.

“In a totally safe and family friendly atmosphere, we will be asking our supporters to brave what could still be a cold night, swapping beds for sleeping bags on the floor of the concourse in the famous stadium.

AN APPEAL FOR SHEFFIELD TO RECLAIM ITS HISTORICAL FOOTBALL CODE A ‘football historian’ who has recently graduated from De Montfort University is proposing a ‘shake-up’ to the modern game of football, with ‘Sheffield’s’ original version of the game to be revived.

Lucy Fitch explained “ The game is like a strange mix of Rugby and Association Football, the game existed for 2 decades from 1857-1877 before being discarded for the association game. I wanted to reach out to the people of Sheffield to try to get something off the ground.”

The 24 year-old hopes the original game can be revived with a special ‘Test Match’ to take place between two Sheffield Teams.

The following is written by Lucy Fitch I have heard it said that Sheffield is the historic home of the beautiful game of Association Football. While there is no doubt that the city of Steel boasts two professional football league clubs, Wednesday and United, who trace back their foundation to 1867 and 1889, respectively, perhaps – given the seasons the two clubs have had so far – it may be time for a change.

When asked which association football club is the oldest, it would be right to say that Sheffield holds that distinction, with Sheffield Football Club being founded in October 1857, but the history of both the club and the local footballing culture of Sheffield is certainly a lot more interesting than the disillusioned monolith that is presentday football.

In the 1860s and 1870s, the Sheffield code found its place in history by becoming the first code to have its own Challenge Cup competition, with Thomas Youdan in 1867 providing a trophy which 12 clubs competed for.

The next year, Oliver Cromwell provided a trophy in which four clubs competed for. The Cromwell Cup was won

by Wednesday.

All this history is well and good, but what am I trying to propose?

I propose that, alongside its attempt to become a first-rate football club, Sheffield and its residents should reclaim its unique historical code, to make it stand out from the rest of the world. In order to achieve this lofty aim, I propose that the following steps be taken: 1) That a group of interested individuals come together to discuss which version of the Sheffield Rules code should be sought to be adopted.

2) Should enough interest be displayed, that a committee or council should be formed to formally organise the codes rebirth.

3) That copies of the agreed upon rules be distributed to the principle clubs of the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA, both modern and historical, inviting them to play a test-match to try out the rules.

4) That some makeshift equipment (namely posts, rouge flags, and a ball) be acquired for the above-mentioned test match.

RECORD BREAKERS On a great spring day for running, five runners represented Stocksbridge Running Club at the Wombwell 5. It is a nice local 5 mile road race starting on a go kart track before taking to the roads with a good hill to test the legs! The rest of the race had a welcome downhill feel to it. Runners of every level were supported by friendly marshals and it finished with a final lap of the track. Thank you to Molly Hayes and Sarah Hayes who were there to cheer us all over the line.

There were some great times with club records broken by Charlotte Carr for overall female in her first race for the club, Jolene Allen for F40, Richard John Hayes for overall male and M40 and David Napier for M50. They are some high targets to beat next year!

Also in action was Narni Fulford, running the Bingley Bo**ocks 10km and finishing in impressive 2nd female place with a new PB. However, the biggest news of the day was over in Seville Spain where two runners flew the

flag for the club and for the town. Rachel Vernon and new member Garry Harding ran the Seville Marathon. With Rachel Vernon running the fastest marathon time by anyone in the club since it was formed. Smashing her PB and setting a female and F35 record in 3:39.47. Then Garry Harding set a men’s and M45 record in 3:40.46.

If that was not enough for this week, three runners raced at the Barnsley AC winter track series on Wednesday. Victoria Patterson set the club female track mile record, Molly Hayes set the club female 800m track record and Richard John Hayes completed the record setting with the male mile and 800m.

Church started the game slowly and went one down early on in the game when everybody switched off, thinking that there had been a foul on James Stafford allowing Campion striker Nathan Cartman to curl one in from twenty-five yards out.

After that the lads rallied and their attitude and desire to get back into the game was fantastic.

After applying some pressure Church were awarded a penalty when Lennon O’Grady was brought down by keeper Brad Emmerson. Nathan Keightly equalised from the spot kick with a shot to the top corner.

With their pitches still unplayable due to the recent weather, the students of Leeds Medics and Dentists sportingly agreed to reverse the fixture and travelled to the Coal Pit Lane to ensure both sides enjoyed a much-needed run out at the weekend.

The visitors charity didn’t extend to the match itself as they just edged the result by 24pts- to 19pts, with their winning score coming in highly controversial circumstances.

There was a minute's silence before the game in memory of former club official, Mr Granville Brailsford who sadly passed away recently. Head Coach, Andy Lawrence gave debuts to two more promising young guns off the Colts conveyer belt, with Fin Dodsworth and Tim Dutton, and both showed up well.

The youthful visitors started brightly against Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby and soon crossed the whitewash with a sweeping long-range try.

The home side, however, roared back downfield and a line-out win by Reece ‘diesel’ Aspin, lead to a forwards rumble and Jack ‘milky’ Martin, was ‘jonny on the spot’ to bundle over from close range to draw the home side level. Young Jack Leary failing with the conversion attempt.

The game was held up for a short while as a visiting player felt the full weight of a mon-

ster Liam O’ Leary shot and was forced off the field and eventually required hospital treatment.

The visitors wrestled the lead back with a converted interception try, but Stocksbridge were level on the stroke of half time as young flyer Harrison Norman, danced through the visitors defence for a super score, and that man Adam Frith, coolly slotted the conversion to draw the half to a close with the score : Stocksbridge Rugby 12 pts – Leeds Medics and Dentists 12 pts. All to play for in the 2nd half.

The students, though lacking in bulk, offered great technique, particularly in the tackle and ‘clock tower’ Beal along with the burly Gary Woodcock were both halted in their tracks with some stubborn defence.

The visitor's superior fitness and athleticism began to take its toll on a tiring home side, and they snatched the lead with a wellworked blind side shift from an attacking scrum.

Then the moment of controversy, that turned the match, with the visiting No 11, crossing the tryline, but clearly dropping the ball in the act of scoring, missed by an otherwise very efficient official. As the conversion sailed over the try scorer was seen looking a little embarrassed.

Stocksbridge was not finished at all, and spent the remaining 20 minutes of the match camped in their opponents red zone as they searched for a score of their own. The for-

wards worked hard with O’Leary, Aspin and both young Martins carrying well, they missed a couple of opportunities when the ball should have been shifted however, the call was to stay tight and work through the dominant forward pack.

Stocksbridge were rewarded when ‘slammin’ Sam Whitaker bundled over from close range from a quick tap penalty for a bonus point score, close enough for skipper Frith to convert.

The result leaves Stocksbridge Rugby at the wrong end of the Counties 4 Yorkshire (phase 2) South league table, although Head Coach Lawrence was pleased with the effort and endeavour of his young charges, as he said ‘ We’re not playing badly at all, and the young guys are handling the step up really well’, adding. ‘each week we are improving and learning, and we will improve’. This weeks Uniblock Man of the Match award was presented to Jack ‘milky’ Martin for a hard working performance, many carries and of course, the try.

Stocksbridge are off to the East Coast next week to take on Hessle RUFC in a rearranged game in the shadow of the Humber Bridge, this fixture will then be reversed as Hessle will be the next visitors to the Coal Pit Lane arena on Sat 2nd March, with a kick off time of 3pm.

Off the field the Club has confirmed the departure of Bar Manager, Lucie Loxley after 3 years in the role. ‘We would like to thank her for her efforts and hard work whilst in post and wish her well for the future’ said Chairman, Mr Phil ‘donk’ Watts.

Both teams had big chances to take the lead early on in the game. An early cross from Jack Watson was met well in the box by Luke Rawson, but his header was right at the goalkeeper Nathan Popple. At the other end, Bailey Adamson was free in the box for a volley but he miscued it and it went high and over.

Another chance would fall to Stocksbridge and this time it would be taken. Tomas Poole slipped a ball past the Winterton defence and Watson outpaced his defender to burst clear in the box and then he simply finished into the bottom corner to give the Steels the lead.

The game would slowly tilt in Winterton’s favour, with Harry Garman having to make a good save to prevent a free kick from Owen Vincent from going in. But they would get an equaliser before the end of the half, with

Stocksbridge never really ending an attack with their clearances constantly going into the Winterton midfield. This final ball though was the killer and Lee Ridley was able to head it in.

Stocksbridge were much improved in the second half as they looked to up the pace. After getting close a few times, it finally worked and the Steels would have the lead again.

Poole’s corner was perfect and Ross Goodwin headed it in from close range to put Stocksbridge ahead.

The Steels looked more likely to score the next goal as well. Jack Dolman was causing plenty of problems, first he burst into the box before curling his shot just over the bar. The better chance would come later when the ball fell to him in the six-yard box but he overplayed things before firing a shot that would be well blocked. Despite not doubling the lead, Stocksbridge would get a crucial three points.

Legion 5-1 Southey Chapeltown RBL started the season with a 5-1 win over Southey Social, but had to come from behind to win.

After an even start, Ryan Keeney headed Southey in front at the back post from a corner.

Legion made an early double change and quickly equalised when Niall Smith beat his man and pulled back for Mitch Savage to slam home from the penalty spot after 30 mins.

In a sellout field at the Wombwell 5, 14 Penistone runners got round the five mile course. Andrew Pearson was first back for Penistone in 30-13, which gained him first place in the V55 category and 26th overall. Bill Phillips and Keith Gordon were first and second in the V75 category in times of 40-08 and 41-06 respectively, with the former setting a new V75 club record over five miles.
