In a celebration of sel ess dedication, a married couple from a village in north She eld have been honoured with a prestigious Community Hero Award for their nearly four decades of relentless volunteering e orts.

Since 1984, Paul and Bridget Manley have been the driving force behind numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing the environment and spirit of their beloved Worrall, nestled within the parish of Brad eld.

eir remarkable journey culminated in a moment of triumph at the Awards Ceremony held at the Houses of Parliament on 5th March, where they clinched the title of Community Pub Hero, much to their astonishment and delight.

Re ecting on their achievement, Paul expressed his gratitude, stating, “We were absolutely shocked and amazed to have won the award, but this award is not just for us it's for all the other members too who work tirelessly to improve the environment of Worrall.”

e Manleys, now in their 70s, have been integral members of the Worrall Environmental Group (WEG) since its inception. Paul vividly recalls the group's humble beginnings, dating back to April 30th, 1984, when he and Bridget were entrusted with the task of overseeing bridleways and pathways.

Over the years, WEG has ourished, boasting a dedicated team of over 30 volunteers who roll up

their sleeves to undertake various projects, ranging from tree planting to village clean-ups.

e couple, a ectionately dubbed the 'dynamic duo', have not only been partners in marriage for 53 years but have also shared a deep-rooted commitment to their community. ey have resided in Worrall for the majority of their lives, embodying the true essence of local stewardship. Meetings of the WEG are a regular a air at the Blue Ball Inn, where plans are hatched and camaraderie thrives. Recent endeavours include an extensive tree planting initiative, bulb planting campaigns featuring da odils, crocuses, and bluebells, as well as collaborations with local authorities to enhance park facilities.

Paul, who served as a teacher at Brad eld School until his retirement in 2006, now assumes the role of Chairman at WEG, guiding the group with wisdom and passion.

e latest gathering of the group takes place this Wednesday at the Blue Ball Inn, where their remarkable achievements will be celebrated once again.

Chris Jowsey, CEO at Admiral Taverns, praised the Manleys and the Blue Ball Inn, remarking, “I’d like to congratulate the Blue Ball Inn in Worrall, Paul and Bridget, for their incredible achievements. Mayor seeks re-election

South Yorkshire's Labour Mayor, Oliver Coppard, seeks re-election, aiming to continue progress made during his first term.

Coppard emphasises his commitment to improving public transport, attracting investment, and addressing health and social issues.

Notable achievements include plans to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport and securing deals for regional development.

Voters will decide on May 2nd, with expanded responsibilities for the Mayor including overseeing policing. The move to grant the Mayor additional powers follows South Yorkshire being awarded 'level 4' devolution status.

UNITE THE UNION

Unite the Union Brass Band will be performing at The Venue, Manchester Rd, Stocksbridge on Saturday 23rd March with an entertaining programme of Music from the Movies. Since 2011 the band has been proudly sponsored by the UK’s biggest Union – Unite. However the concert will be almost a homecoming for the band as back in the 1990s, they were known under their previous name of Stocksbridge Engineering Steels and had a dedicated rehearsal room in the Stocksbridge Victory Club (as The Venue was then called) and they still feel a strong connection to the area. It was during that time that the band was asked to appear in a film being made in Sheffield about the plight of redundant steelworkers. That turned out to be the Oscar winning ‘The Full Monty’ and the band will be including some of the music from the film in their programme. SUE SAYS ‘GOODBYE’ AFTER 37 YEARS

After 37 years of loyal service Ecclesfield School are saying goodbye to one of their much loved staff, Sue Nicholson. Sue started at Ecclesfield in September 1987 in the main school office and has been there ever since. In that time over 13,000 students have passed through Ecclesfield’s doors as well as many staff who have worked alongside her and benefitted from her vast experience. In her time at the school, she has also seen her two daughters Emma and Carla go through, as well as two of her grandchildren. Sue is a much loved member of staff and will be greatly missed.

Sue is looking forward to spending more time going on holiday and spending time with her family.

Steel Works Memories: Chronicle of Laughter and Hard Work

Former steel worker Mick Ward is trying to preserve the vibrant tales and colourful characters that once populated the Steel Works. From anecdotes and pranks to jokes and stories of camaraderie, Ward is urging anyone with memories to come forward and share.

Having served his apprenticeship at Belmont in 1970-72 and traversed through every department during his two-year steelworks tour, Ward brings a wealth of personal experience to this endeavour. Reflecting on those days, he reminisces, "Back in the day, people worked hard and played hard as the steelworks could sometimes be a wonderful playground."

To compile these narratives alongside the history of the works from the era of Samuel Fox to the present day, Ward seeks to capture the essence of a bygone era. "I am looking for stories before they all get lost," Ward expressed, emphasising the importance of preserving these memories for future generations.

One such anecdote shared by Ward involves the playful banter that echoed through the steel mill during break times. "At snap time we used to play dominoes in 4's with your partner diagonally opposite you," Ward

recounted. "Harmless banter would go around but there was a couple who were nicknamed TIC_TAC."

Describing the banter between the duo, Ward illustrated, "Their banter would go like this: Steve would say, 'I was nearly late this morning I clocked in at 3 minutes to 6,' meaning I've got 3-6. Then Eric would respond, '5 to,' indicating he's got 5-6. This playful exchange continued with Steve teasing, 'Remind me, were you born in '44?' and Eric retorting, 'No, '43.'"

Ward's initiative has already sparked interest among former colleagues and acquaintances, with many eager to contribute their own stories. For those who prefer to recount their memories verbally, Ward assures, "I am happy to listen to your story and write it out."

STOCKSBRIDGE NURSE SHORTLISTED FOR TWO NATIONAL AWARDS

A Stocksbridge nurse, who is chair of a Chapeltown-based rare disease charity, has been shortlisted for two national nursing awards.

Dr Iain Armstrong, chair of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association UK (PHA UK) is up for ‘Cardiovascular Nurse of the Year’ and ‘Nurse of the Year’ at the British Journal of Nursing (BJN) Awards 2024.

He also works as a consultant nurse within the Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit, a specialist pulmonary hypertension service based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

The BJN Awards aim to showcase nursing excellence, highlighting the critical contribution that nurses make to healthcare. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 22 March.

Iain, who lives in Stocksbridge, co-founded the PHA UK 24 years ago to support people living with pulmonary hypertension (PH), a serious and incurable lung disease which also affects the heart.

He said: “It was a wonderful surprise to hear that I’ve been shortlisted for these awards. Regardless of the outcome, I’m proud of my nursing career in Sheffield

and of the difference the PHA UK makes to people nationally.

“It is a privilege to work as part of skilled and committed teams, both at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and at the PHA UK.”

Iain has worked within the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for 34 years and in 2005 he became the first consultant nurse to work in pulmonary vascular disease.

He was named ‘Respiratory Nurse of the Year’ at the BJN Awards 2020, and in 2019 he was awarded a Fellowship from the Royal College of Nursing.

PH is a rare and life-limiting condition that causes high pressure in the blood vessels connecting the heart and lungs.

The Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit is one of just eight specialist PH treatment centres in the UK.

With a newly constituted committee, Stannington Carnival is back in 2024. The much-loved local event will take place on its traditional date of the second Saturday in July – which this year falls on 13th July.

Chair of the new committee, Abbie Malcolm, said, “I hope that Stannington people will turn out in force and join us at the carnival in Stannington Park on Saturday 13th July for a day of fun that also has a serious purpose – raising funds that we can then distribute to local beneficiaries.

“We have only just come together as a committee, so I cannot make specific promises about the attractions we will have on the day, but we do have the park booked so there will definitely be something. And the team is already working hard to make sure that Carnival ’24 will be a day to remember.”

The choir, fresh from success at a prestigious music festival in Huddersfield, will be joined by Stannington Training Band at Christ Church, Stannington, S6 6DB, to present an evening of music to suit all tastes.

Among the choir’s programme will be items sung at the end of last month at the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival at which the choir won a second prize with distinction. There were excellent comments from adjudicators, including “wow! …. outstanding”.

Stannington Training Band, which is thriving under its director Tim Parris and has members of all ages, will present an eclectic programme ranging from Purcell to the James Bond Theme and will feature soloists.

Dear Look Local,

Probably I am not the only person who has things popping up for them when they go to Google. Today whose face should pop but that of my elected representative in Westminster. At last, I thought, she is surely going to be standing up for her constituents as they struggle with poor transport, terrible ambulance delays, painful and debilitating waits for operations, or is she going to say something about children in poverty and all of us finding that we can’t afford the things that we used to be able to, or is she going to mention the climate crisis, maybe the horrific scenes in Gaza ?... but no. She was saying that she was or she wasn’t extremely bothered, I can’t remember which, about the prime minister’s views on extremism .

There is extremism. There is extreme increase in poverty, extreme decline in public services, extreme weather caused by mankind there is extreme pollution of rivers and there are extreme levels of mental health problems amongst young people after 14 extremely long years of Tory government .

Miriam Cates yet again shows extreme inability to say or do anything about the things that matter to the people that elected her.

Food Bank has raised the money it needs to keep CAB operational

May I thank everyone in the town who has contributed in any way to helping the Food Bank to raise enough money, £7,000, to enable the CAB worker to continue through to July. By then we hope that the City Council, and the CAB, who are both working to make this continue in the longer term, will have achieved their objective.

This work at the Food Bank is of huge importance to the people of Stocksbridge. Over recent months it has released tens of thousands of pounds of debt for local people, enabled others to receive the benefits for which they are entitled, and helped people in their myriad struggles to survive.

The City Council, the Town Council, a local trust, the Bridge Shop, and local people have all helped us to reach this situation. A huge thank-you to everyone.

Your readers might be interested to see that the City Council has awarded the Food Bank £5,000 to employ a person on a part-time, short-term job, to help us to organise all the enquiries from local and statutory organisations who want to connect with the Feed Bank, so that their clients can get good access to the Food Bank and the Community Outlet. The job is to work out ‘pathways’ for the different types of organisations, so that access is easy, fast, and relevant to their clients. We hope there is an advert about the post in this week’s Look Local. This will be a valuable piece of work by someone who can see how it will make a difference.

Urgent Road Safety Issue. Last night a Councillor rang me apologising about the delay in answeing about the problems regarding the mud and clay on the Carr Road, Hollin Busk junction which I

highlighted two weeks ago. I think the road needs to be inspected when it is reported and not weeks later when it is fine and dry. I first highlighted this in March 2023 and it is now March 2024 and the problem continues.

Pensioners Forgotten in 2024 Budget

So does work pay asks pensioners who have had to work all their lives but don’t get a mention in the Spring Budget, so does work always pay. A simple question was put to Jeremy Hunt by BBC News Presenter Charlie Stayt “will some on £15,000 be better off after the budget?” Jeremy Hunt replied by saying “I don’t Know”. He was asked again but said it was unfair to pick out one question and looked red faced. Sop working people and pensioners have a chancellor who doesn’t care about them. The chancellor said we have to pay back money owed because of Covid, we remember “Eat out to help out”

The Gondoliers – Grenoside & Birley Carr Players - March 2024

There’s quite a change in the air in Grenoside this spring. Following on from their highly successful production of A Christmas Carol at the end of 2023, Grenoside & Birley Carr Players have moved to much sunnier climes. They invite you to set sail from Venice to an island fair, that lies in the Southern sea, as they perform the much loved Gilbert and Sullivan operetta The Gondoliers. Brothers Marco and Giuseppe, the most favoured of all the gondoliers, have to leave their newly-

wedded wives Tessa and Gianetta and sail to the land of Barataria, where one of them must rule.

The problem is, no-one knows for certain which of them should be king. And what will happen to their wives, who have to stay behind?

It hasn’t all been plain sailing for leading men John Otter and Richard Nortcliffe, who play Marco and Giuseppe. Both have had many years experience performing – this will be John’s 50 th G&S production! – but that doesn’t

mean that they can rest on their laurels. John said, “Having played the role of Marco in four previous productions, I find myself playing his brother Giuseppe for the first time. This has meant learning all the songs again as I’m suddenly singing a completely different line to what I’m used to. This has caused several issues including singing the wrong name on occasion, and trying to remember I sing low not high”. This has led Richard to feel that their double act has become ‘whose line is it anyway’!

Richard has also had the challenge of travelling back and forth across the city as he is simultaneously rehearsing another production with a different society, with performances due in successive weeks. Thankfully, they both have the support, not only of their lovely on-stage wives, Catherine Jackson and Hannah Thorpe who play Gianetta and Tessa, but from of their own families who are also performing in the show.

The production also features Brian Barber and Helen Dent

as the Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro, who are also trying to track down the rightful King. Grenoside & Birley Carr Players are once again being put through their paces by Director Karen Ann Loxley and Musical Director Jonathan Hester.

Grenoside & Birley Carr Players are delighted to be supporting the ongoing work of the Weston Park Cancer Charity during the show.

The Food Bank is advertising for a short-term post

The Food Bank in Stocksbridge has received over the last year or so, in its new arrangements, lots of enquiries from committed people in local organisations, asking how the Food Bank can help their clients or users or members who are in urgent need of short-term help with food.

Some of these are from schoolteachers, health workers, statutory bodies, or local community organisers, who have people they believe are in urgent need of support with food. The Food Bank removed the formal ‘referral’ process last year, to make access less problematic.

Now the Foodbank is trying to find out how best to serve these organisations so that their clients can get the help they need when they need it. The Food Bank describes these as ‘Pathways’. And

it expects these pathways will be different for different types of organisations. They will need to be discussed and agreed upon, written up and put into practice so that they run smoothly once they are developed.

This is a piece of work that the volunteers who run the service just do not have the time to set aside to do this work with third parties. They are working hard to receive donated food for the Foodbank and rescued food for the Community Outlet.

So the Local Area Committee of Sheffield City Council has granted the Food Bank £5,000, for a six-month part-time piece of work.

Stocksbridge Food Bank Development Worker Post

The Stocksbridge Food Bank invites applications for a temporary (6 month) part time (12 hours per week) post.

The worker will consult with local organisations and services, including in the areas of health, education, local government and community, to work out effective ways for their clients to make speedy use of the Food Bank when in urgent need, and put those new ‘pathways’ into effect.

The pay is £13.50 per hour, for 12 hours per week.

Pete Townsend reaches the century milestone

Pete Townsend of Valley Hill Runners reached a monumental milestone in his running journey this past Saturday as he completed his 100th park run at Concord Park. Despite nearing the age of 70, Pete's passion for running knows no bounds, and his dedication to the sport is truly inspiring.

For Pete, park run isn't just about the physical activity; it's a cherished weekly ritual that he shares with his friends. Rain or shine, he laces up his running shoes and joins his fellow enthusiasts at Concord Park, ready to tackle the 5-kilometre course with enthusiasm and determination.

Achieving 100 park runs is no small feat. It requires consistency, perseverance, and a genuine love for the sport. Pete's commitment to his running goals serves as a

testament to his resilience and unwavering spirit.

As Pete crossed the nish line for the 100th time, cheers erupted from his friends and fellow runners, celebrating his remarkable achievement. His dedication to park run not only serves as an inspiration to those around him but also demonstrates that age is no barrier to pursuing one's passions.

A much changed RBL team kept their run of good form going at home to FC Inter.

Morgan Cowell almost scored early on when he smashed the crossbar a er a well worked moved. e rst goal then came a er a defence splitting ball by Connor Tonge found Jed Phillips who opened up his body and placed the ball in the top corner on 38 minutes.

Two minutes later Mikey Vella made it 2-0 when Jacob Walkland’s deep cross was well volleyed home.

e second half saw Tonge made it 3-0 a er a ne pass from Danny Booth, cutting inside and nding the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Booth, playing out of position at centre back, got his second assist late on nding Cowell who beat his man and red home le footed to complete the scoring.

Students run 14-man Stocksbridge ragged

With less than 45 seconds on the clock, centre Pat O’Leary received a yellow card for a high tackle, and the visitors took immediate advantage of their numerical supremacy to register the rst score with a simple try.

On his return from the sin bin, the luckless O’Leary was again cautioned for a high tackle, and received a red card, leaving the home side to play almost a full game with 14 men.

e younger, tter, well-drilled Leeds side made the most of their opportunity running in three more tries before the half-time whistle, gaining a bonus point in the process and e ectively ending the game as a contest, with the

It was a Saturday of mixed fortunes for both of the Penistone Church Senior Sides.

Church Reserves extended their winning sequence to six games visiting and beating South Kirkby Colliery by two goals to nil. The secondhalf goals came from Brad Kemp and MacKenzie Stocks.

The afternoon’s main event was at the Parker Roofing Memorial Ground where Church took on Barton Town and was looking for three points to keep in touch with the play-offs.

The two teams exchanged chances for the first ten minutes and once again keeper Harry Ambler had to be on his game making four or five first-class saves to deny Barton.

The deadlock was broken when Ewan Heeley head-

ed the visitors into the lead on twenty minutes. However, Church reacted well when in the ten minutes before half time Nathan Keightley equalised and then they took the lead with an excellently placed shot just inside the post by Antony Brown who struck again just before half time for Church to go in three-one up. The second half saw Church come under pressure from the visitors and goals from Reece Moody and Clarke Greaves at either end the half meant the game finished at three-three and the points were shared.

We knew Barton was in a false position in the league they’re very good, well organised and they do everything right. In the first ten or fifteen min-

utes, the score could have easily been two apiece, Harry’s pulled some great saves off and we’ve missed opportunities. After that Barton created quite a few chances and again Harry has had to be at his best he’s pulled three or four great saves off, one in particular was a header which he has got right off the line, it was worldclass, to keep it at nil-nil. All in all, it’s disappointing that we were threeone up and couldn’t see the game out or make it difficult for Barton, they haven’t opened us up, they’ve just been direct and it’s caught us out. We now have to move on to Wednesday (13th March) to Eccleshill away and hopefully, we can build on this point.

STEELS FALL SHORT ON TRAVELS

Newton Aycliffe 2 - 1 Stocksbridge PS

Stocksbridge Park Steels lost out on a trip to the North East and Newton Aycliffe thanks to a wonder goal.

For the first half, Stocksbridge struggled to get to grips with a Newton Aycliffe side that were much improved from the last time the two sides met in the FA Trophy back in September. They struggled to make things stick up front but Newton Aycliffe were eventually able to do that. Toby Pascoe got down the left and got the space to put in a cross. Liam Jarvie was duly waiting in the middle and managed to get enough contact to take the ball into the back of the net.

In the second half, Stocksbridge were much improved and started creating more chances. Eventually, this paid off. It all started with Jack Watson, who beat three people before having his shot well saved by James Winter. The ball would rebound to Luke Hogg at the edge of the box and he would strike it cleanly into the bottom

It was a busy weekend for the running club and it was our ladies who were the stars this week, which was good to say it was International Women's Day on Friday.

Our awesome ladies took part in races over both days. First up was Rachel Vernon who added yet another club record to her growing collection by claiming the F35 record for 10K at the Run Through Tatton 10K on Saturday morning, running an impressive 49:03.

Sunday one of our newer members Charlotte Carr followed up her strong running at Wombwell 5 with a fantastic time of 1:53:09 at the popular early spring Retford Half Marathon. A little closer to home Narni Fulford continued her Manchester Marathon training by using the March Hare 6-hour endurance event at Penistone to clock 35.5K (22 miles), I think she is nearly enough ready to smash it next month.

Finally Nicola Heaton headed over the Woodhead to do the EPIC Fire Fighters Duathlon, a unique event that takes place in conjunction with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue. The format is simple, you choose a friend or race partner and stick together throughout the run / bike / run. On the bike you are allowed to work as a pair, by ‘drafting’ each other, but not with other teams. The 4-mile trail run is a tough start and end to the race, with a hilly 25 miles in between.

Stocksbridge would push up to try and look for a winning goal but while they had some momentum, Newton Aycliffe were able to start turning things back in their favour. Stocksbridge had the luck when chaos in the box resulted in a close range shot being smashed off the post. However, it would turn again as just a minute later, Newton Aycliffe went back on the attack and Liam Adamson would send a crashing shot off the bar and in.

The Steels tried to get an equaliser but in the end, the in-form Newton Aycliffe were able to hold on and Stocksbridge had to return to South Yorkshire without a point.

Come wind, rain, or sunshine, runners and volunteers gather to ensure all can kick off their Saturday morning on a positive note. This past week at Concord Parkrun, the weather was bitterly cold. Nonetheless, everyone wrapped up warmly and had a wonderful time.

Valley Hill Runners had a special guest from Penistone Runners - Kelvin Bowskill, who made a rare appearance following his extended stay in Spain. Despite feeling the chill, he received a warm welcome.

Turner and Sykes

Penistone runner Graihagh Turner put on the blue and white vest of Yorkshire to compete in the under15 girls inter-county cross-country championships at Wollaton Park, Nottingham.

She nished in 19th place overall and was third counter for Yorkshire who placed third in the team standings.

Second-claim member Ruby Sykes was also selected for Yorkshire and competed in the senior ladies race where she placed 53rd. Ruby’s Yorkshire team claimed silver in the team event.

Harriet Drouin and Steve Sanders took on the very tough Haworth Hobble which is 32 miles long and involves 4,400 feet of climbing.

Steve got around in 6-18-53 and Harriet nished in 7-21-25. Sarah Walch and Damien Kilpin completed the At e Double fell race at Skinning Grove. Damian was 18th overall in 53-11, Sarah 52nd in 1-04-54.

Andrew Taylor nished the Chester 10k in 1-10-00.

Elsewhere Kate Rushforth (2-1715) and Sara Wolstenholme (223-28) completed the Retford Half Marathon. On the parkrun front, there were rst places for George Parr (Penistone), Lauren Lees (Barnsley Juniors) and Flynn Rogers (Hillsborough Juniors).

Suzanne McGill placed second at Penistone. Age-graded runners of the week were Bernice Nixon (78.54%), Suzanne McGill (76.30%), Bill Phillips (75.90%), Gareth Irvine (75.37%) and Shaun

Swallow (74.19%). Starting on ursday 4th April, Penistone Running Club will be starting a walk to run open to anybody who would like to start running.
