REWARD OFFERED AFTER CAT SHOOTING A STOCKSBRIDGE woman is offering a reward for information that leads to the conviction to the cruel person who shot her cat. Joanne Richardson’s cat Sid was callously shot dead in Stocksbridge on the evening of August 16. Sid was a rescue cat whose mother was killed by a car leaving Sid and his sister orphaned. Sid and his sister were found and an RSPCA foster family gave the two kittens round the clock care and they survived. They were re-homed with Joanne when they were eight weeks old and she moved to Stocksbridge three months ago. But Sid was shot in the spine and passed away during the operation to remove the bullet.

Joanne has started a Just Giving page to raise money for a reward, putting in the first £100 herself. She says on her campaign: “The first few months were touch and go because of their poor start in life. We nurtured and loved Sid and his sister and they grew into healthy, fun loving adult cats. “We moved in to the Toy Town, Stocksbridge area of Sheffield three months ago. Sid loved the area especially playing in the field at the back of our house. Sid’s personality was very timid and he only trusted a few people in his life who all felt privileged because he was such a gentle, loving cat. “Sid was shot in the spine, from above. It took Sid hours to drag himself through the gardens to get home and he must have suffered terribly. Sid lost his fight for life after he

undertook an operation to remove the metal bullet from his spine. “We are donating £100 towards a reward that can be offered to the first person who gives information that secures the arrest and subsequent prosecution of the callous person that has undertook this horrendous crime. “We are asking for donations to add to this reward to encourage people to come forward. If a conviction is not made after six months all the money raised will be given to the RSPCA who saved Sid as a kitten.” It was hoped that £200 would be raised but the fund has already broken the £300 mark. A post-mortem examination carried out yesterday afternoon concluded that he died from a single stab wound to the chest. His family continue to be supported by specialist officers and have asked for their privacy to be respected at this incredibly difficult time. As a team of detectives continue with enquiries, the Senior In-

vestigating Officer in the case Detective Chief Inspector Jude Ashmore, is urging members of the local community who may have information to come forward. He said: “We believe there are people within the community who will be able to help with our enquiries as we piece together exactly what happened and work to identify those involved. “It’s these people who we need to come forward and speak to us, we need to work together to provide answers for Mr Brissett’s family and bring those responsible to justice. “The investigation continues to progress and today we have arrested two boys, aged 17 and 16 on suspicion of conspiracy to rob. They currently remain in custody.

“We are grateful to everyone who has come forward with information so far but we need people to keep talking to us. No matter how insignificant you think a piece of information may seem, it could in fact prove vital to the investigation. “If you have information, you can speak to an officer in the area, call 101 or if you don’t feel comfortable speaking to police, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. Please quote incident number 827 of 14 August when providing information.” An 18-year-old man arrested on suspicion of attempt murder earlier this week remains released under investigation and a 17-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to rob remains on bail.

THE green Volvo S60 pictured above failed to stop for officers in the Grenoside area of Sheffield last Tuesday afternoon. During the pursuit it collided with this single decker bus and then with a member of the public, causing injuries. The driver of the Volvo managed to make their escape, but police say they have a number of lines of enquiry to identify them. The front seat passenger was detained. The road was shut for a number of hours whilst officers conducted their investigation and recovered the vehicles involved.

CELEBRATIONS AS CHAPELTOWN ACADEMY ACHIEVE BEST EVER RESULTS

CHAPELTOWN Academy are celebrating after their students achieved the place of study’s best ever A-Level results. The results were better on every level imaginable with significant increases in the number of top grades attained, allowing a number of students to go on to study at the top universities in the country. There were 20 A* grades – up from 13 last year and nine students were awarded all A – A*s, up from six last year. In addition, 100% of the results were A* to E. Results were better in other areas too – 62% of exam entries were awarded A* to B grades, up from 50% last year. Also up from last year were the number of A* to C grades – last year was 78% and this year was 84%. This is well above the national average of 75%. The number of students gaining at least AAB in two facilitating subjects more than doubled from 11% last year to 24% this time around. The average grade is up from C+ to B- this year and 37% of students will now be attending a Russell Group University.

This is in contrast to the national average of 10% to come back and do lectures on medicine or Vetwith several students going on to study at top uni- erinary Science, to tell the students how they got to versities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, LSE where they are. That’s a big plus for us. and King’s College London. “We’re looking forward to the new students startHeadteacher Dayle Coe told Look Local: “Every ing, eager to carry on their education after their measure has gone up, including the percentage of GCSEs. Everyone has performed at or above their students who have got A* to B, every single stu- potential and that’s our expectation. dent has passed. It’s our best ever set of results and well above the national average. “We are a very small and specialised academy. We’ve got a particular ethos and a family atmosphere. It’s that caring nature of the staff that’s got students where they need to be. That’s really important.

“We’ve got students who have achieved more than they expected. “The staff are massively dedicated and professional. They’re adept at what they do and are fantastic at caring for the students. The level of care they get here is outstanding. They are phenomenal.”

"I couldn't have wished for anything better from Chapeltown Academy"

“We are academic and aspirational. We aren’t exclusive or elitist, we want to take these students as far as they can go. We’ve got many students from schools in this area who might not have had big aspirations when they came here but they’ve ended up going to the top universities. “It’s down to the dedication of staff, the commitment of the students and the support of the parents. Now we’ve been open four years, former students who have finished university have started

STAR POWER: Headteacher Dayle Coe with star students Ruby, Harry and Sophie. LOOK Local spoke to three Chapeltown Academy students who achieved unbelievable results. We asked them about their time at the academy, what their results mean for them and what’s next in their further education.

Harry France, 18, lives in Thorpe Hesley and excelled with A grades in Advanced Biology and Advanced Chemistry, along with an A* in Advanced Spanish. This is in addition to his AS Level in Mathematics from last year.

Ruby Nixson, 18, has four A* grades in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Advanced Chemistry and Physics. She said: “I’m going to Oxford University to study maths. I live in Barnsley and Chapeltown Academy has been fantastic for me. I couldn’t have wished for anything better. I loved it and wouldn’t change anything. It’s done exactly what it promised to do.”

Harry said: “I originally wanted to be a doctor but didn’t think my grades would be good enough to do medicine. But they’re better than I expected and now I’m going to have a gap year before reapplying for medicine. The academy has been amazing. I think the small classes really help – it’s like having free private tutoring really.”

Finally, 18-year-old Sophie Hall gained three A* results in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics and an A in Advanced Chemistry. Sophie commented: “I’m really pleased with the results and I’m going to study chemical engineering at Cambridge. I have no plans for what I’d like to do yet but I’ll do my degree and see what opportunities are available after that. “The academy has been fantastic, it’s so good to have a place like this so close. The teachers are really nice and I’d definitely recommend studying here. You can stay focused with no distractions.”

QUALITY BEDS at REALISTIC PRICES ON Saturday August 11, Councillor Julie Grocutt, Mayor of Stocksbridge, officially opened the second Whitwell Arts Festival. Held at the Stocksbridge Christian Centre on Cedar Road, the festival is an opportunity for local people to exhibit their art and craft work.

Councillor Grocutt, who attended the first festival in August 2017, said that this year the participants had exceeded the high standard set by last year’s event. Pride of place among the many exhibits were six paintings done by Year 10 students at Stocksbridge High School which were reflections on social is-

sues of our time such as the Grenfell Tower catastrophe.

Society and the Stocksbridge Photographic Society.

There were a number of pieces by students from Stocksbridge Junior School on the themes of Christian values such as repentance, forgiveness and compassion.

Other displays included craft work such as wood carving, knitting, cross-stitch and other forms of craft work.

Your Letters Big opportunity I read with interest the different ideas that people had put forward for the now closed St Matthias Church. With religion seemingly taking a back seat in modern culture, I think it is a really good opportunity to get something worthwhile in Stocksbridge.

Got something to say? Email us at news@looklocal.org.uk Publication subject to space and content.

Publishing does not mean we agree with the content.

There’s no way a building of that size and breathtaking beauty would be built in the current climate so to have St Matthias already there and ready to go is a blessing! Along with the tunnels to Manchester being reopened, I do think that a train link to Sheffield would do the world of good for Stocksbridgers and having visited the museum in the Town Hall building, I think that an expansion of this would be great for the town’s proud history. I hope that either of these, or even better both, come to fruition and bring some life to our area.

Lyons looked in good knick from the start and scored a classy 53 before being caught on the boundary looking to increase the scoring rate in the last few overs. Steve Perry, Joe Hibbert and the rest of the lower order added quick runs and Stocksbridge finished on a remarkable 299-9 from 46 overs.

SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead praised the “spirit” of his side after another tough defeat at high-flying Edinburgh.

In reply Hathersage never really got going. The opening pair showed a little bit of promise but through a mixture of tight bowling and excellent catching Hathersage were bowled out for 191. Les Harris was once again the pick of the Stocksbridge bowlers, picking up figures of 4-42 from his 12 overs. With just two games to go in the season, the first XI welcome De La Salle to Bracken Moor next week, looking to end the season in good form. SECOND TEAM Stocksbridge CC second team were involved in a thriller at home to league leaders Sheffield Transport CC 1st team. The away team won the toss and elected to bat and after a solid start on 55-1 ran into an inform Jim Tomlinson who took 7-38 with highlight wicket being opposition captain John Slack whose off stump was ripped out with a ball that ‘did a bit’.

Tigers’ spirit hailed despite defeat

Stocksbridge batters give Hathersage a stuffing

AFTER last week’s disappointment with the bat, Stocksbridge travelled to Hathersage looking of get back to winning ways. Captain Pete Broomhead won the toss and decided that the first XI would have a bat on a lovely sunny day in Derbyshire. Stocksbridge opened with Matt Price and Jack Newton and the pair put on a real show, smashing the Hathersage bowlers to all parts of the ground. Both batters scored quickly and freely with boundaries coming on a regular basis. Newton was causing real problems to the Hathersage bowlers, regularly clearing the rope. Not only this, Hathersage we’re starting to run out of balls as Newton continued to dispatch the bowling into the river before finally being dismissed for a wonderful 107. Price also played an excellent knock, which went under the radar with the destructive Newton at the other end. Price kept the scoreboard ticking along nicely following the lose of his open partner before being run out for 78. Jack Lyons, who was part of the run out, didn’t let this put him off his stride.

Transport finished on 154 all out and could have been so much better for Stocksbridge as they had them 95-9 until the last wicket added 58 in 4 overs with some incredible hitting of 12 boundaries. The Stocksbridge reply got off to a flyer with 40 off the first 6 overs and well placed at 75-1 after 10 with runs from Jack Murfin 30 and Chris Ogley 29 before wickets started to fall. Transport showed why they are league leaders with a great fight back. At 120-8 the game swung back with the away team until Chris Thwaites 31 and Rowan Brearley nine batted superbly against some hostile bowling to 147-8 and 8 runs from victory, until two quick wickets from Garth Lewis snatched victory from them. A great effort again by a team fighting against the odds to stay in the division. Two more games two more cup finals to stay in the division

Connor Mountain, especially as the boys are so low on confidence.

Depleted Tigers went down 5436 at Armadale as they sorely missed the scoring power of No.1 Charles Wright.

“I wasn’t expecting Kyle Howarth and guest Mason Campton to struggle. Their past performances around Armadale have been fantastic.

But Stead admitted he at least had some positives to dwell on with the excellent performances of Kasper Andersen and James Shanes.

“But Edinburgh are flying right now so I was actually encouraged by the fight and spirit of the whole side. Kasper and James were brilliant.

The young Dane signed last week and produced an outstanding display around the tight Scottish circuit with 13 while Shanes picked up a fighting paid 12.

“I take a lot of positives from the performance, that’s small consolation for our recent run. But at least the spirit was back.”

Stead said: “It was never going to be easy without Charles and

Edinburgh are the opponents at Owlerton on Thursday night but Andersen was delighted to put in a good display.

He said: “I was told by a few people that Edinburgh was a really hard place to come. But I like small tracks and I enjoyed myself. I obviously want to come to Sheffield and show people I can do a good job and win races and I’ve done that tonight.” Edinburgh 54: Richie Worrall 15, Erik Riss 13, Ricky Wells 9+2, Victor Palovaara 7+2, Josh Pickering 4+2, Joel Andersson 4, William Lawson 2+1. Sheffield 36: Kasper Andersen 13, James Shanes 10+2, Todd Kurtz 6+1, Kyle Howarth 4+1, Mason Campton 2, Broc Nicol 1+1, Joe Lawlor 0.

Big win for War Memorial Terminus Tavern 2-6 Oughtibridge WMFC JOSH Walker fired in a superb hat-trick as the War Memorial got there pre -season off to a winning start. As Dave Hudson’s men prepare for life in the Blades Super Draw’s top flight, the game started even with both teams going close. Chas Tunnard then opened the scoring when he capitalised on a defensive mix up. Tunnard then turned provider setting up Callum Chambers who made no mistake, the home side pulled two quick fire goals back to equalise before Walker tapped home just before the break. In the second half a dominant display by Oughtibridge saw two further goals by Walker and another for Chambers.

STEELS LOSE OPENER supporters to wait before they were back on level terms. Good play down the Steels left side saw Stan Mugisha score at the near post after the ball was pulled back. That made it 1-1with only three minutes gone.

There was another enforced change for Steels as Poulton had to come off after 30 minutes due to injury with Swinburn coming on and Rhodes taking up an unfamiliar role at left back. With the season only half an hour old things went from bad to worse for Steels. as they pressed forward with Rhodes heading off the line from another Stamford corner.

Steels were knocked back on 55 minutes when a neat passage of play gave Fortnam – Tomlinson down the inside left channel a chance that he took well, volleying home from 12 yards out giving Greaves no chance as the ball hit the net high to his right. And 2-1 down turned swiftly to 3-1 when a right wing corner was headed into the top corner of the net by Jordan Cooke, with the Steels defence rooted. Stan Mugisha then made it 4 -1 as Steels pushed forward. Moxam pulled one back for Steels but Stamford were awarded a penalty after Greaves had pulled down Brownhill on the edge of the box on 89 minutes but he redeemed himself with a good save down to his right. Steels face Bamber Bridge at home on Saturday in the FA Cup with a 3pm kick off.
