In Bloom success for centre ‘NEVER TO A shopping centre in north Sheffield is celebrating after scooping a gold award in this year’s Yorkshire In Bloom competition for its fantastic floral displays.

Despite sitting the competition out for four years, Fox Valley Shopping Centre in Stocksbridge has returned stronger than ever retaining its gold standard for the large business category.

Judges highlighted how the centre had displayed a sense of pride for the site’s industrial heritage particularly shown by the striking steel statue at the centre’s entrance, affectionately known as Grandad Fox, as well as the site timeline and the ‘proud past, new future’ mural created by local artist, Pete McKee. Judges also commended the centre management team on their spotless car park and well-maintained hard landscaping commenting that the colour from the many hanging baskets and planters ‘lifted the site perfectly’.

HAPPEN AGAIN’

The team have concentrated heavily on building on their conservation efforts this year by introducing more pollinates and re-wilding large areas to encourage more birds and insect life.

Centre Manager at Fox Valley, Claire Biltcliffe, said: “The team and in particular our gardener, John Whitaker, have excelled this year in ensuring the centre looks beautiful for our visitors.

“It is fabulous that we’ve received this recognition from Yorkshire in Bloom and we look forward to building on this and continuing to ensure our lovely centre is blooming again next year.

“We are now looking ahead to our Christmas lights display and diary of events to ensure the centre looks equally beautiful for the upcoming festive season.”

‘Captain’ Tobias awarded A 12-year-old boy who has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for his school and a local charity has received a National Medal of Honour, write Hayley Coyle & Tim Dale.

Tobias Weller, from Sheffield, who has cerebral palsy and autism, was awarded the British Citizen Youth Award at the Palace of Westminster on Thursday.

He was nicknamed "Captain" after he was inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore to raise money during the Covid lockdowns.

Tobias told the BBC it had been "an honour to receive the award".

The British Citizen Youth Award is designed to recognise the individual endeavours of young people who are having a positive impact on their communities, helping charities, or undertaking exceptional activities in support of others.

Tobias attended the ceremony in London with his mother, Ruth Garbutt, and was handed the Medal of Honour by Dame Mary Perkins, who is patron of the event.

He said it had been a "brilliant day".

"I just like helping others and I hope I am a good role model," he said.

"All of it has been really, really hard work."

It is not the first time Tobias' fundraising efforts have been recognised.

He became the youngest person to be awarded the British Empire Medal in 2022 and he previously won the inaugural Captain Sir Tom Moore Young Unsung Hero Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year event.

At the beginning of the pandemic lockdown in 2020, Tobias, who was then 10, set himself a target of raising £500.

He has also received a Pride of Britain Award.

Drop-in consultation session planned for Town Deal project

Residents will have the chance to have their say at a drop-in consultation session, focused on the proposed investment for the area around Underbank Reservoir in Stocksbridge.

The Stocksbridge Towns Fund Board and Yorkshire Water are working in partnership to explore an ambitious package of potential improvements which will benefit the local community and visitors to the area.

Residents can chat with the team and find out more about the plans at the consultation event which takes place on Thursday, October 19th at Smithy Moor Community Centre, from 3pm – 7pm.

The session will focus on a range of potential improvements aimed at making the area more accessible for walkers, cyclists and horse riders as well as creating new familyfriendly trails, additional free visitor parking and bringing more outdoor activities to the area.

The partnership approach to delivering improvements will maximise the impact of the

investment through the Town Deal. Board members are looking forward to sharing their plans and ideas at the session.

Cllr Julie Grocutt, joint champion of the Trails Project, said: “This is a great opportunity to make some really significant improvements to a fantastic part of our town and we are keen to hear from the local community about these ideas and proposals.”

The £24.1m funding for Stocksbridge was approved by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities in December 2022 and includes a range of major improvements across the town including the regeneration of the Manchester Road area.

A Tale of Neighbourly Bond and a Remarkable Hedge In a quiet, unassuming village where good neighbours are a treasured commodity, an extraordinary tale of friendship and creativity has unfolded over the past three decades.

Meet Pete Swift, (pictured) a 75-year-old former councillor, sword dancer, and folk singer, who, by a simple act of neighbourly kindness, inadvertently turned hedge trimming into an art form.

More than 30 years ago, Pete decided to lend a helping hand to his neighbour, Fred Myers. He began trimming a hedge that had grown so tall it obstructed Fred's view of the road from his house. What started as a humble gesture of goodwill soon transformed into something extraordinary.

embarked on a creative journey that would leave a lasting mark on the neighbourhood. One fine morning, Fred Myers opened his curtains to find a delightful surprise in his front garden – a meticulously sculpted steam train. Unbeknownst to Fred, Pete had taken his topography skills to new heights and turned the once-overgrown hedge into a stunning work of art that still graces the neighbourhood today.

Pete Swift has been a resident of Grenoside for 74 years, making him a true pillar of the community. He recalls his motivation for undertaking this remarkable project, saying, "30 or 40 years ago, Fred couldn't see the road from his house because the hedge had grown so high, so I decided to get my trimmer out and cut it for him. I do it 3 or 4 times a year, and the hedge soon became a steam train."

The transformation of the hedge into a steam train has not only brought a smile to the faces of those passing by but has also become a symbol of neighbourly kindness and community spirit.

Pete takes immense pleasure in the joy he brings to others through his artistic hedge trimming. He added, "People walking past it, when they see the train, have a smile on their face.

It's great to see, and I love helping people and putting a smile on their faces."

In a world where the hustle and bustle often overshadow the simple acts of kindness, Pete Swift's unique hedge creation serves as a reminder of how helping one another benefits all. TREE FELLING RECONCILIATION Dear Editor, In early 2018, following a series of inadequate responses from Sheffield City Council (SCC) to requests submitted under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), the Information Commissioner allowed SCC up to 35 days to release sections of a £2.2bn contract that had been kept hidden from the public, or face legal action. In early March 2018, SCC shared parts of the contract for the 25yr ‘Streets Ahead’ highway maintenance project, which revealed a target for a total of 17,500 street trees to be felled. In December 2019, accessed via the FOIA, an e-mail from David Wain - the SCC Environmental Technical Officer within the Highways PFI Client Team - revealed that the highway maintenance contractor - Amey Hallam Highways Ltd (Amey) - faced a £15 million penalty if the target was not met.

In April 2018, as the statutory regulator of tree felling and sales of ‘produce’, the Forestry Commission intervened and began an investigation to uncover and penalise any criminality. Faced with the prospect of criminal charges if they did not make significant changes to the felling programme, to change how assessments are done, felling decisions made, and to reduce the number of trees to be felled, SCC and Amey opted to form a Street Trees Partnership Group (STP) with Sheffield Tree Action Groups (STAG) and others.

Why are no efforts to seek additional funding to deliver the full trails project from other sources such as the South Yorkshire Mayoral Authority as for other STD projects?

Why have all offers of help by partners to raise extra funds been ignored and all information on the cost and design of the Trails withheld for the last 12 months?

Why have low-cost but essential elements of the original trails project such as badly needed signage of existing trails in Stocksbridge also been omitted?

What exactly are the Underbank proposals – what are the cost/benefits and do they connect with the recently improved Little Don Trail to Langsett and the new crossing of the Stocksbridge bypass to Underbank currently under construction by Highways England at a cost of over £1.75m?

What commitment has Yorkshire Water actually made to funding the Underbank project and is it guaranteed?

An STD Board paper suggested the project will ‘’unlock 20 km of trails’’ – presumably on Yorkshire Water land. If true where are they, and will they become public rights of way open to cycling and horse riding as the original trails project proposed?

Trick or Treat Halloween Trail The Moor Sheffield is offering children some half term fun this Halloween with a free Trick or Treat Halloween Trail on the 25th and 26th of October between 11am and 2pm.

Spooky stickers will be hidden in the windows of various retailers and eateries on The Moor. Children will start at the Witches Cavern, located next to River Island on The Moor, where they will be given a trail map with clues as to where each spooky sticker is hiding. Once they have found all the stickers and filled in their trail map, they will return it to the Witches Cavern to receive a Halloween Trick or Treat goody bag.

Lee Appleton, Centre Manager of The Moor, said: “We are delighted to be hosting our third year of this Halloween trail. Previous years events have been a huge success, increasing foot traffic and attracting families to visit The Moor, its retailers, eateries, and Sheffield city centre as a whole. As the programme ends at the end of the year, ITS is now able to offer additional qualifications in subjects such as Customer Service, Team Leading, Retail and a wide range of Health, Care and Education qualifications.

Sports clubs to benefit from Town Deal grants

The first phase of improvements to Sheffield’s flood defences are now complete in the Loxley Valley, Hillsborough.

The Upper Don Flood Alleviation Scheme aims to protect 63 homes and 152 businesses from the damaging effects of flooding, like those seen in the area in 2007 and 2019.

The recently complete phase saw improvements to flood defences on the Lower Loxley, Hillsborough and Owlerton. The project included works within existing businesses and homes, sheet piling and building a series of walls all while considering the most effective way to protect the environment and ecology of the area. The removal of a redundant weir near Livesey Street also helped to improve the fish passage.

The Council is working alongside the Environment Agency and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority on the wider Upper Don Flood Alleviation Scheme. It aims to protect communities, major roads and development land in the Upper Don, Loxley and Little Don valleys from Stocksbridge through Oughtibridge and Hillsborough to the city centre.

Cllr Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, said: “The council is committed to protecting all residents in the city from flooding and has played a leading role in the delivery of this important project.

“With predictions for warmer and wetter winters, heavier downpours in the summer, and more extreme weather events as a result of climate change, Sheffield’s flood risk continues to increase and we recognise the importance of building our resilience and taking action as soon as possible.

“The Upper Don Flood Alleviation Scheme, along with the range of other measures we are implementing across the city, will provide residents security, enable businesses to invest and grow and keep our great city moving.”

Grants totalling £220,000 have been given the go ahead - delivering major improvements at two Stocksbridge sporting clubs through the Town Deal Sports Hub Project.

Stocksbridge Park Steels is to receive a grant of £120,000 and Stocksbridge Rugby Club will receive £100,000, unlocking an investment which will enhance facilities at the two clubs for both players and supporters.

The two grants are part of a package of major improvements to sporting facilities across the town and were approved at Sheffield City Council’s Finance Committee on Monday 16 th October.

The investment means Stocksbridge Park Steels can upgrade the club’s Bracken Moor stadium to be much more accessible to prams and to wheelchair users, creating a new area at the ground. The Rugby Club grant will allow a much needed drainage project to go ahead – making the pitch playable throughout the year. Work on both projects is expected to get underway in spring 2024.

The £220,000 investment is part of the £24.1m Town Deal investment in Stocksbridge which includes the regeneration of Manchester Road as well as investment at Oxley Park and at Underbank Reservoir.

Roger Gissing, Vice Chairman of Stocksbridge Park Steels said: “This project opens a lot of avenues for us, a lot of our supporters are elderly and we do struggle with access, we have lots of stairs and steps and this grant is going to enable us to create an area which is on a flat level.“

Stocksbridge Rugby Club President Philip Watts said: “We are delighted to have the confirmation that we can start on this project which is something we have wanted to invest in for some time at the club.

“When the pitch gets waterlogged in the winter months we often have to find other pitches or delay games – so this will make a huge difference to all our teams, from the youngest juniors up to our adult team.”

Towns Fund Board Co-Chair, Miriam Cates MP, said: “We’re delighted that the Stocksbridge Town Deal can award these grants to two great local clubs allowing them to start work on these enhancements and improvements.

“Stocksbridge Rugby Club and Stocksbridge Park Steels are both hugely important to the local community in Stocksbridge and Deepcar and this investment is going to make a real difference to both clubs.”

Stocksbridge Running Club had a very successful weekend across the county, with runners racing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Starting with yesterday was the 10th anniversary Yorkshire Marathon held in York and Narni Fulford ran the race supporting her friend and neighbour Magdalena Wright while dressed as a banana finishing in 5:40:31.

Between them they've raised over £3K for their charity. Also in York was the York 10mile race and one of our parkrun to 10K graduates Nicola Brown did her first ever road race completing the 10-mile race in an impressive 1:27:39. In doing so, she set a club female 10mile and F45 record.

Further afield on the coast was the Yorkshire Coast 10K and Victoria Patterson continues her awesome improvements since joining the club, knocking nearly 2 minutes off her 10K PB she set back in August with a 56:46 time.

On Saturday one of our newest members Jonathan Page made his debut for the club at the Ladybower Half Marathon that took on the hills surrounding the reservoir, in muddy, cold conditions he came back in 2:12:40 setting a new personal best. Finally, on Friday night it was our club's founder who was in action over in Heslington York at the Yorkshire Vets Athletics Association 5K Championship.

Richard set a new season-best time of 17:18 for 5K and in doing so claimed the V40 championship.

A close game, a gritty performance and a positive attitude was not quite enough to prevent Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby slipping to another home defeat at the hands of Nestle Rowntree, eventually falling to a nail biting 14pts to 18pts defeat to their visitors from York.

A losing bonus point was all that Stocksbridge Rugby had to show for their efforts, and this keeps them just off the bottom of the Yorkshire 4 Counties league ladder.

Head Coach Andy Lawrence was disappointed with the loss but very positive about the future for his charges, ‘I’d be more concerned if we were losing and playing badly, but we’re not’, he said, adding ‘we are playing a nice brand of rugby with a young developing team. It’s an exciting time to be a player in-

volved in our re-building because I know how good these players will be’. Lawrence also bemoaned the extensive injury list which has robbed him of some senior players, meaning the promising juniors having to accept more responsibility.

Stocksbridge Rugby face a trip to Leeds based Modernians this weekend, with the next game at Coal Pit Lane scheduled for 11th November with a 2.15pm kick off against Hull based Hornsea Rugby. The Clubhouse will be open for the England World Cup semi final on Saturday, along with the traditional Harvest Festival.

Stocksbridge also have a bye week on the 4th November, hopefully giving some of the walking wounded time to recover and return to fitness.

The Rugby World Cup Final, hopefully involving England will be shown on the big screen live in the Manchester Road Clubhouse on Saturday 28th October, all are welcome.

Runners achieve pb’s STEELS STUTTER on busy weekend

This was not a game for the purists and both sides struggled to create anything to cause excitement in the crowd. While the defences could count themselves as very happy with the first half, both attacks failed to cause much impact. The closest anyone got to a goal in the first half was Jack Watson who curled his shot just over.

In the second half, Stocksbridge had started off brightly. But in a blow, it was Hebburn who took the lead. Olly Martin gathered the ball in the box and while he was crowded, a little feint gave him some space and then he was able to curl the ball into the top corner.

It was a busy weekend for runners from Penistone Footpath runners as they took part in several races across the North of England.

Suzanne McGill claimed a personal best and a club record at the Yorkshire Marathon where she clocked 3-22-56. This gave her a top ten position in the ladies over45 age category.

Also competing was Michael Walsh who finished in a time of 3-58-26 to get under the four hour barrier. Second overall in the race was Gary Briscoe from Penistone who competes for Barnsley AC. Gary claimed a pb in a very rapid 2-26-05.

The event also saw a shorter ten mile event.

Raymond Brown claimed first place in the men’s over80 age category in 1-40-22. This knocked eight minutes off Ray’s own club record for the 10 mile road distance.

Three runners headed over to the coast to compete in the Scarborough 10k. First back was Daniel Hague in 40-10 followed by Mark Graham (49-11) and Peter Beever (49-45).

On the parkrun scene there was a first place for Rachael Mayston at Penistone and a second place for Lee Storey at Concord.

The first South Yorkshire cross country league fixture took place at Clifton in excellent conditions. There were many good performance from Penistone runners but the results have yet to be published. Younger athletes representing Penistone included Nina Baldwin and

Yorkshire Marathon

123, Rory O’Sullivan 57-54; 141, Jill Scrivens 1-01-39; 146, Sarah Halstead 1-02-48; 155, Mandy Helliwell 1-04-43.

A bit closer to home, four Penistone runners took part in the Holmfirth 10k. First man back was Rory O’Sullivan in 57-54 and first lady back was Jill Scrivens in 1-01-39.

In the end, Stocksbridge huffed and puffed but were unable to break down a resolute Hebburn defence.

Heidi Morley who put in good performances in the girls under11 race.

James Sidebottom, Rhianna Louise, Chloe Worth and Will Hoyland completed the Ladybower Reservoir 50k Ultra. They crossed the line together in 7-13-58.

A good contingent of Penistone runners travelled over the Pennines to compete in the Manchester Half Marathon. Their trip was rewarded with impressive personal bests for everyone. Andrew Heppenstall was first back in a time of 1-15-20. Next was James Mumford in 1-17-07. Martin Ball followed in 1-20-49, a personal best at the age of 52. Ashley Firth finished in 1-25-58. Rob Lees also completed the course in an impressive 1-21-58 just behind Matt Robinson who clocked 1-20-42.

Stocksbridge rallied as they tried to fight back into the game. Jordan Lemon’s pass into the box had enough venom to become a shot and Shaun Newbrook in the Hebburn goal had to move quick to stop it from sneaking in. There was also a big opportunity for Ross Goodwin who sliced his shot from the edge of the box.

It did fall to substitute Basille Zottos at a narrow angle but Newbrook did well to save.

Nathan Ryan produced 3 excellent saves for Stannington as the game went on. Lewis Fox saved one on one to keep Legion in the game, and Adam Todd cleared off the line from Lee Johnstone's effort.

With 5 minutes to go Connor Tonge’s (pictured) whipped corner evaded the front post and with Dave Millen attacking, crept in for 1-1.

Legion had the momentum and when substitute and debutant Ahmed Tahar broke

through the midfield, he beat the keeper to spark a big celebration for the visitors.
