OFFICERS from Counter Terrorism Policing North East raided a Stocksbridge property on the morning of Tuesday December 19 in relation to suspicion of terrorism offences. Two men were arrested in the Burngreave area of Sheffield and arrests were also made in Chesterfield and Meersbrook. The arrests were intelligence led and pre planned as part of an ongoing investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East. Shortly after the four arrests, an additional address was searched in Stocksbridge in connection with these arrests. A spokesperson for the North East Branch of Counter Terrorism Policing said: “We recognise that local people may have concerns as a result of this activity. We would ask people to remain alert but not alarmed and we are grateful for the assistance and understanding of people locally.

“The public may have heard loud bangs at the time police entered the properties. We would like to reassurance them that this was part of the method of entry to gain access. “Residents will be kept as informed as possible and we are grateful for their understanding, patience and support while these enquiries continue.” Derbyshire Constabulary Assistant Chief Constable Bill McWil-

liam said: “We of course understand that police activity of this nature can be unsettling. However, please be reassured; the arrest we wanted to make has been made. Our advice remains to be vigilant, which is not different to our day-to-day advice in the current climate, but continue to go about your business as usual. “We will be working closely with colleagues at the North East Counter Terrorism Unit as this investigation progresses.” South Yorkshire Police Superintendent for the Sheffield area Una Jennings said: “I understand our local communities will have concerns about this morning’s police activity but I want to offer my reassurance that we will continue to serve and protect the public of South Yorkshire. “We work very closely with our colleagues at the North East Counter Terrorism Unit and we will ensure we maintain these strong links in order to provide a high level of service and delivery to everyone in our community. Public safety is our utmost concern.” If you see or hear something that could be terrorist related, act on your instincts and call the police in confidence on 0800 789 321. Fun run family organise Christmas events A FAMILY from Chapeltown are organising Sheffield’s very first family Santa Fun Run and a Boxing Day Turkey Trot, with all the proceeds going to local and national charities.

“We thought that was a wonderful, selfless idea. So we put our heads together, and thought, why not create a couple of fun family events, and get other people involved?

On December 23, the 2017 Santa Fun Run will hit Sheffield, with a free Santa suit for all entrants, a “We are just a normal local family from medal, mince pies and cake for all finishers. Chapeltown. My husband Darren is a support worker who works with adults On Boxing Day, runners can all burn off some of with learning disabilities. I’m a former Christmas day excesses, and this race offers a free teacher and shark trainer. Yes, really! Christmas pudding for all finishers along with another awesome medal, plus cake and mince pies at “Robyn is 19 and works in the Harry the finish line. Potter shop in Meadowhall and Iona, 14, is at school. We don’t have a lot, but Both races are organised by the Wilkinson family we want to help those who have even and are totally family friendly, wheelchair friendly less.” and pram friendly; there is no time limit and they should be enormous fun. There will also be goody bags too! Around 100 Santas are already booked for December 23, and over 50 Turkey Trotters so far, so both events are selling fast!

There is a website where people can book directly - they can even nominate charities that they would like to see the event support. It can be found at www.runforit.today, and it’s up and running and ready to take bookings now. Mel Wilkinson told Look Local: “The bottom line is, Christmas is a time for giving, so we’d like to help give as much as possible to those in need whilst at the same time giving a great deal of family-friendly fun to local people. “The idea came about when our eldest daughter Robyn suggested that instead of buying Christmas presents for each other this year, we could pool what we would have spent and donate it to the homeless instead.

Presented by Toby Foster, the Toby Awards are held every December to celebrate some of the best stories and most memorable guests featured during the year. Deepcar resident Knutt, known for his appearances in Emmerdale, Coronation Street and most recently the hit comedy Benidorm, was a regular visitor to BBC Radio Sheffield, often appearing on shows across the schedule. Born in Sheffield, he began his career in showbusiness as a comedian touring the pubs and clubs. He was also a much loved regular star of the Lyceum Theatre pantomime in the City. Bobby sadly passed away suddenly while on holiday in France earlier this year.

Collecting the award on Bobby’s behalf was entertainer Bernie Clifton, a friend of Bobby’s for many years. Bernie said: “Bobby was Sheffield through and through. He was an actor, a comedian, a musician, an all- round entertainer. He was much loved and he’s much missed. It’s such a tragic loss.” Presenter Toby Foster said: “We all loved Bobby. He was such a character. When he died earlier this year so many of our listeners rang with their stories, memories and tributes it was absolutely fitting to give him the local legend award. If only he could have been here to see it for himself.” The awards were broadcast live from BBC Radio Sheffield this morning and are available to listen again on the BBC Radio iPlayer.

THE Upper Don Action Group (UDAG) reports that a developer has submitted a controversial planning application just in time for Christmas. Plans for a new ‘village’ on green field land first surfaced back in January via Hallam Land Management, an arm of Sheffield construction company, Henry Boot. The 93+ dwelling scheme is earmarked for fields next to Royd Farm between Bolsterstone and Deepcar. The green field site is next to the Green Belt and close to the Peak District National Park. Following a public meeting called by community group Upper Don Action Group (UDAG) in March, objections flooded into Sheffield City Council’s planning dept. And this was just to establish whether or not an Environmental Impact Assessment was needed.

Now, after months of delay, the developer has submitted a full planning application- and local residents will have to deal with it during the Christmas period.

enough brownfield sites without eating into the countryside.”

John Hesketh, chairman of UDAG, the local community group campaigning against the new ‘village’ at Royd Farm and former Sheffield planning committee chairman said: “The timing of the Royd Farm ‘village’ planning application is cynical. The developer hopes that local residents will have their mind on Christmas and won’t object to the creation of a new village in Sheffield’s golden frame.

Andrew Barton, of Carr Road across the from the proposed Royd Farm ‘village’ commented: “This farmland is simply the wrong spot for such a large housing development. It is adjacent to the Green Belt and close to the Peak District National Park. A development of this size would generate even more vehicle movements: it would make the Carr Road/Manchester Road bottleneck even worse. My neighbours are of a similar view.”

“However, UDAG members are speaking to residents in Deepcar, Bolsterstone and beyond, urging them to object to this invasive and unnecessary proposal. “Constructing a new village on a green field site next to the Green Belt extends urban development into the countryside around Sheffield. “This should be the last resort, not the first and I sometimes think the open country around Stocksbridge and Bolsterstone is the forgotten part of the city. This proposal would destroy the rural character of this part of the Upper Don area. Sheffield has

The cast and crew would like to thank all of those who helped to make this year’s panto another amazing success, most importantly all of the people who came to watch the show. Uber suspension lifted THE suspension of Uber’s operating licence, which was announced by Sheffield City Council on Friday November 29, has been lifted.

Uber provided satisfactory replies to the questions asked by Sheffield City Council about the management of Uber.

This decision follows productive discussions between Uber and Sheffield City Council.

The new application, made by Uber in October, to operate private hire cars in Sheffield is being considered and a decision will be made in early 2018.

A love of food helped shed three stone JULIE Smith found weight loss success eating the foods her family loved and now she is set to help others do the same. Julie had tried before to lose weight but always struggled to stick to anything as going hungry just didn’t work for her. She then found a local Slimming World group. Apprehensively, she walked in and was greeted with lovely warm welcome from her consultant Kirsty and she soon fell in love with their food optimising plan. Knowing she could eat pasta dishes, shepherd’s pie, curries and that she didn’t have to cook separate meals for her family and husband Chris, sounded like it was too good to be true

but sure enough the weight started dropping off. It wasn’t long before she had lost her first stone and within the year she had reached her own target weight losing over three stone. Julie said: “Getting to choose my own target weight was important to me, everything Slimming World does but it is the member in control of their own weight loss.” Since reaching target and gaining confidence, Julie has taken up exercise doing boxercise a couple of times a week and taking her dogs on long walks. Slimming World encourages members to be more active to help them gain life-long success.

Having been at target now for two years, Julie has decided to help others find the weight loss success she has found. Julie added: “I really can’t wait to help others get that same incredible feeling that I’ve had, shedding the misery and guilt of being overweigh and helping people live happier, healthier lives with out ever feeling hungry or deprived.” Julie will be re-launching the Grenoside group on January 4 at St Mark’s Church Hall, Main Street, at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. For more details call Julie on 07411110014 or for your local group visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk

200M FOLLOWING the success of this year’s Tour De Yorkshire which passed through Penistone on Sunday April 30, a book celebrating the occasion, has been launched. The book contains stunning images taken on the day and during the build up to the event. It includes pictures of riders as they make their way through local towns, villages and landmarks, as well as the street dressing preparations and the In Gear art project with local schools, community groups, businesses and residents. It is a brilliant documentation of the progress of the race and the

wonderful support given to riders by local people. One feature making the book even more special is the inclusion of the latest text technology, which brings the pages to life. Augmented reality allows readers to see video clips which capture the unique atmosphere of the day. The book costs £10 and is available from all Barnsley Museums gift shops and online at shop. barnsley-musuems.com Cllr Sir Steve Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council said: “The people of the borough gave the riders of the Tour De Yorkshire an outstanding welcome

this year. Communities did a fantastic job working together to create an amazing event that was enjoyed by all. The book launched perfectly captures all the hard work in the lead up to the race as well as the electric atmosphere on the day. We can’t wait for the race to return in 2018 and for the very first time Barnsley will be a host town. It will travel through more of the borough than ever before including making a welcome return to Penistone. ” For more information about the Tour De Yorkshire coming to Barnsley visit www.barnsley.gov. uk/tdy

MP presents prizes to card designers SATURDAY December 2 saw Angela Smith MP give out prizes to the winners of her annual Christmas card competition. The competition, run in conjunction with local primary schools, provides Angela with her official Christmas card and the chance for the lucky winners to have their picture on the card. Commenting on competition, Angela said: “I would like to thank all those children who took part in last year’s competition and also all the schools who allowed the children to take part. “A special thank you must also go out to all the companies who donated the money which made it all possible.” “The winning cards have now gone out to almost 2,000 people, both within the constituency and further afield, including the leaders of all three main political parties. Well done to everyone who took part!” The winners of the competition received gifts donated by local sponsors.

Christmas cheer at Co-op for food bank On behalf of us all here at the Hub food bank we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported us on Friday December 15. Special thanks to the Co-op who through Diane, Terri and Shane went out of their way to help.

We are always amazed by the generosity shown when we have a donation day and once again we were not disappointed. Thank you to our top team for helping us on a very cold and icy day. We enter our fifth year and the new year secure in the

knowledge that we can carry on helping our local families in need. Love, peace and blessings. Ray and Veronica Hawley, The Hub food bank.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

Happy Birthday on 17th Dec From everyone at Look Local.

Alex Wigfield

Happy 18th Birthday on 23rd December

As the taxpayer continues to own the majority of this bank its priority should be serving the interests of those customers. It is nothing short of scandalous that this government have signed off a branch closure programme on this scale.

So... They’ve made a big decision that doesn’t seem to tally It seems no bank is needed, out here in Stocksbridge Valley

Christmas Wishes

Happy Valley’s booming, the outlook seemed quite sunny But someone has decided that we won’t be needing money So... They’ve made a big decision. To me it’s really strange

NatWest branch closure

That from next June the traders here won’t be needing change

Dear Look Local, This weekend the local Labour Party and myself have started an online petition to campaign against the alarming proposals to close the Stocksbridge NatWest branch. As the only bank in Stocksbridge this branch is a vital lifeline for hundreds of residents. Many people don’t have a computer or are understandably concerned about the security of online banking. Importantly, Stocksbridge also has an ageing population; the closure of this branch would disproportionately and unfairly affect older members of this community. This is not the only bank closure proposed either, NatWest has announced plans to close Penistone, Hillsborough and Firth Park branches too.

Someone’s glanced once at the figures, and crossed us off in red “You people don’t need money here, just use your cards instead So... They’ve made a big decision. Really? Blooming Heck! “Bus driver please be patient because I have to write a cheque The older folks in Stocky won’t pay by card instead

This would mean that the nearest branches for our residents of Stocksbridge would be Sheffield city They’ll keep their ready money underneath centre and Barnsley centre. their bed At a time when we have had cuts to bus services and are still waiting for a direct tram link to and from Stocksbridge these closures could cause The Stocksbridge tremendous difficulties for residents.

They say it’s done and dusted, the bank will soon close down

Carol concert

St John’s was the place to be on Tuesday evening! The bad weather didn’t spoil one of the best concerts! Waldershelf Singers, Deepcar St John’s Paul Carey pupils choir, musicians and The Tremeloes from the Parkinson’s Society Choir. The roof was raised by the singing and pure pleasure.

I’ve been a loyal customer for more than 40 years

Don’t miss out on these local concerts, they are always superb.

Town Council thanks

From a very satisfied local resident.

branch, and Penistone and also Hillsborough too

Are pencilled in for closure, so what are we to do? You’d think with a monopoly that they’d be doing well Their trusting loyal customers can all just go to Hell Not so very long ago they needed bailing out And they’ll still be getting bonus cheques, you needn’t have a doubt

The Castle Inn, Bolsterstone NICOLA AND HER TEAM WOULD LIKE TO WISH CUSTOMERS A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

They’ve also lost their livelihoods but the fat cats just don’t care There’s the bank down at the Post Office inside of the Co-op But we’d have to queue outside the door and three times round the shop What we need in Stocksbridge is a stay of execution Maybe Mr Dransfield can come up with a solution So, they’ve made a big decision, down there in

Sheffield Steelers 0 Oughtibridge WMFC 10

Local Sport Good turnout for prize lunch THE weather has played havoc at Stocksbridge Golf Club over the last couple of weeks but most of the Dragons section got together for the prize presentation and lunch. It was a great turnout with many golfers and their partners attending for a very well prepared lunch and a chance to catch up with playing partners before the Christmas break. Out of all the prize winners only three were unable to attend. What a great turn out.

OUGHTBRIDGE War Memorial climbed to second with a 10-0 victory at a Steelers in the Blades Super Draw and go into 2018 still unbeaten. In freezing conditions, it was Steelers’ best performance for weeks. They were just two down at the interval after almost giving as good as they got, but eventually Steelers tired and were hit by six goals in a fifteen minute burst. Steelers kept plugging away and had a couple of their own chances before the late goals. Ollie Black hit four goals, Chaz Tunnard scored a hat-trick, Matt Harrison bagged a brace and Josh Walker scored the other one.

Scargill presented with Roadman award

The winners were a very diverse collection with no one golfer dominating the competitions. The 2017 Dragons captain Les Wright thanked everyone for their support through the year and especially mentioned the team members who played in many friendly fixtures against clubs from all over the Sheffield region. He also thanked the catering staff, greens staff and Roger Broad, the club professional and his team for their help though the year. His final duty was to pass on the duties to next year’s captain, Ian Batty The directors of the club would like to pass on their thanks and Christmas greetings, to all staff, players and social members for their support during 2017. We look forward to 2018 with great expectations with improvements on the course, an array of different competitions and wish everyone a happy and peaceful New Year.

Villa take win after tough test High Green Villa FC 4 Hemsworth M.W. FC 2

THIS was another hard fought battle between second and third in the league ending in a good result for the Villa coming from 2-1 down to win 4-2. Trailing 1-0 early in the game, Villa hit back mid-way through the first half through Jeavons who tapped in from close range after a knock down from Jacobs.

LAST week, 24 members of Birdwell Wheelers met up at the Bulrush Bistro at Barnburgh lakeside for their annual Christmas lunch. Four members Chris Jenkins, Paul Mynett, Tony Lodge and Steve Myatt braved the wintry weather and cycled there. At a break in proceedings, Dave Scargill was presented with the Roadman Trophy for his season’s results in League of Veteran Racing Cyclists events. This week the club’s Sunday run sets off at 9am from Brewers Fayre roundabout, More details on this and all the above can be found on the club’s new website: http://www.birdwellwheelerscyclingclub.co.uk

Deliverers Required

Hemsworth immediately took the lead again from a brilliant but controversial 25-yard free kick, taken with the Villa goalkeeper and defenders waiting for a whistle that never came. From this, tempers boiled over and the turning point came at the interval when the visitors had a player harshly sent off for misconduct. This spoiled the game and Villa made the extra man pay in the second half playing some neat football with goals from Jeavons, Jacobs and Moorehouse.

In the following areas: Chapeltown • HIGH GREEN WHARNCLIFFE SIDE • PENISTONE • stocksbridge

This was a good all-round disciplined team performance putting the Villa in a good league position for 2018.

Stocksbridge 17-15 Castleford Match report by Dawn Woodcock THE Stocksbridge first XV closed their account for 2017 with a nail-biting victory over high flyers Castleford. After a rest last weekend due to pitch conditions, the Pigs should have looked bright eyed, bushy tailed and raring to go however, the warm up looked quite the opposite. The common cold had struck a few players and with Christmas work socials impacting others in the team, they needed to dig deep when the whistle blew for kick off. Stocksbridge kicked off the game downhill on a very bleak and cold field. Castleford made some yards with forwards carrying the ball but Stocksbridge turned it over allowing winger Ryan Smith to kick down field resulting in a five-meter scrum to Stocksbridge. After resetting twice, Adam Firth at scrum half made a break from the back of the scrum which was then brought back for another scrum where Castleford won the ball. After making yards a penalty was awarded to Stocksbridge where Frith kicked for posts and sent it over, putting their first points on the board and making it 3-0. Castleford counteracted by playing aggressively up the field and after five minutes they shipped the ball wide but missed grounding the ball down at the try line by an inch after double movement, the ref took play back and award Castleford a penalty giving them the opportunity to kick for the sticks. At 11 minutes in the score was now level 3-3. From the re-start Stocksbridge drew the Castleford defence in and sent the ball down the line through a slick backs move, allowing Smith to scythe through the defence and score under the posts. Converted by Frith, 10-3. Play continued with even play from both sides. Stocksbridge were awarded a penalty which was kicked to touch allowing them to take advan-

tage of a line out, unfortunately a knock on gave the ball back to Castleford for a scrum. This led Castleford up the field but great line speed from the Stocksbridge defence forced the visitors backwards however, this pressure also claimed the afternoon’s first casualty as Reece Aspin sustained an injury resulting in a gap in play. Play resumed with a Castleford scrum that the strong Stocksbridge pack turned over, demonstrating their dominance of the set piece and big runs from Gary Woodcock, Sam Whitaker and Ricky Rowett pushed the ball forward down the field.

ing a try in the bottom right corner which was successfully converted making the score 17-10. A tired Stockbridge now needed to defend their line and reduce the mistakes leading to penalties.

The game continued with even play until the 70th minute where a Stocksbridge knock on allowed Castleford to take the ball from the scrum attacking the line 5 meters out, Dan Lowe made a try saving tackle which led to a questionable yellow card for being high. Castleford took a penalty where their number four knocked on and Frith hoofed the ball down field into touch. After another line-out Castleford utilised possession by attacking wide-out and exposing the Stocksbridge defence before their number seven ran through to score on the outside. The try was not converted bringing the score to 17A scuffle ten meters out led the ref to award a 15 with three minutes left to play. scrum to Stocksbridge who walked it five meters before Castleford’s number seven was given a yel- The re-start saw Frith send the ball deep into Castllow card for repetitive penalties. After several eford territory before the Stocksbridge pack folmore scrums, Castleford continued to defend well, lowed up with a great chase and crunching tackle, keeping the ball from going over the try line until forcing the cold Castleford hands to knock on. AT the Travellers Six race at Denby Dale, Scott Hinchcliffe was a class apart from the rest of the field, running out a comfortable winner for Penistone Footpath Runners in 33.07. This also broke the course record. Shaun Dimelow was fourth overall and first M45 in 37.29 and, with Damien Briscoe in 39.45, emerged as the winning men’s team. Julia Johnson was first woman back for the club, finishing first F50 in 45.06. Steve Storey finished second M60 in the South Yorkshire XC series, the final race of which was held at Kiveton Park on Sunday. Majka Kunicka completed the Tour de Helvellyn in the Lake District in seven hours, 31 minutes and 58 seconds for the 38-mile navigational course, finishing 26th overall.

In team events Stocksbridge Pentaqua maintained their stay in the top division of the Barnsley Minor League against clubs at least twice their size. Stocksbridge Pentaqua are based at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre and have strong links with the centre managements of both Stocksbridge and Hoyland Leisure Centres, and management at the Sheffield Swim School.

Over the year Stocksbridge Pentaqua swimmers have competed up and down the country at numerous events gaining medals, placings in finals and have averaged over 65% personal best times at most of the events.

The club is SwimMark and Aquamark accredited, is run by volunteers, and has a strong link with Sheffield City Council’s Swimming Training Scheme and a link whereby potential ‘Olympians’ can join the World Class Programme at Ponds Forge.

The achievements are extremely good for such a small club with limited resources, and the reputation of Stocksbridge is once again gaining momentum in the swimming fraternity. The club is getting closer to achieving its aim of producing National swimmers on a regular basis that will compete against the cream of the country.
