Ecclesfield Parish Council meets Lord Mayor at Ecclesfield Gala ECCLESFIELD Parish Council Chairman, Cllr Garry Weatherall and fellow councillors Michael Appleby and John Housley with Mrs Tara Ball, the new Clerk to the Council, welcomed Sheffield’s Lord Mayor to the Parish Council’s stall at Ecclesfield Gala last Sunday.
LOCAL HERITAGE OPEN DAYS
BOTH the nail forge at Hoylandswaine and Wortley Top Forge will be holding free open days for Heritage Open Days over the coming weeks.
The nail forge, between Penistone and Barnsley, will be open free of charge on Saturday September 15, from 11am to 3pm. It is a historic small workshop where nails were made by hand on an anvil. Once there were many forges like it in the area, but now it is a rarity. It still has the original hearth, bellows and chimney. You can hear volunteers explain how nails were made, how the nailmaker and his family worked in a forge close
to their home, and the part that nailmaking played in village life.
physical work, the dangers. Just think what it was like to live there!
Hoylandswaine is just off the A628 Barnsley-Penistone road. The Nail Forge is on the village street near the Lord Nelson public house. There will be an Open sign outside.
Visitors will be given a guided tour by volunteers. They will see the waterwheels turning, and some of our recent restoration projects. There is also a collection of historic engines and machines, some of which will be working.
Wortley Top Forge will be open free of charge on Saturday September 8, from 11am to 4pm. It is Britain’s last surviving water powered heavy iron forge. For centuries its waterwheels worked huge hammers which forged hot iron into shape. It has been restored over many years by teams of volunteers. Come and see the wheels turn – and imagine the heat, the noise, the hard
save
Wortley Top Forge is by the River Don, on a side road to the west of the A629 Huddersfield road. The postcode is S35 7DN. Turn off the A629 just south of Wortley village, or at the traffic lights in Thurgoland. There is free car parking for visitors in the grounds. The Gala was a great success and an opportunity to promote the work of the Council and its archiving project. The Chairman presented the Lord Mayor with the pack of information being given out at the stall and a copy of the 2019 calendar. The calendar is a new venture for the Council led by the Archiving Project and its volunteers. Copies of the calendar are available from the Parish Council offices, priced at £4.50. The Parish Council is taking part in the Heritage Open Days festival directly for the first time as well as supporting local groups. On September 14, they will be holding two events. The first is a guided ‘then and
now’ walk around High Green, meeting at 10am outside the Parish Council offices on Mortomley Lane, High Green. In the afternoon there will be another ‘Meet the Archive’ event on the theme of ‘Ordinary Lives and Extraordinary Women’ at the Parish Council Offices, Mortomley Lane, High Green. A spokesperson said: “We are organising the event to celebrate getting votes for women and men, home life and some of the extraordinary women who lived in and influenced the lives of generations in the Parish area. “We will have some of our archive collection of local history material on display including photos, maps, pamphlets and brochures. There will also be an opportunity to see some of the slide shows we’ve put together, go onto our website to view the images there, and look at our collection of local history books and reference material. “We would like more people to get involved with the archiving proj-
ect and our open afternoon will be a chance for people to come along and find out more. “You don’t have to be a history expert or have lived all your life in the area to take part. Young or old, everyone can contribute. The aim of the project is to capture the rich and varied local history from across the parish. One of the things we are keen to do is to put more ‘names to faces’ for some of the photographs that we’ve had donated to the archive.” The open afternoon is a free drop-in event and everyone is welcome. It begins at 1.30pm and finishes at 6.30pm.
