The installation has been designed by Sue Hague of Pinkdotinc Design. The Sheffield-based organisation has previously worked on projects including the Olympics 2012, Epson UK and the Rugby World Cup. All events are free and open to the public.

Fossil tree root goes on display

13 years for Stannington sex offender A STANNINGTON man who was found guilty of non-recent sex offences against children is now serving over 13-years behind bars.

Lee Woodward, of Deer Park Road, Stannington, appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on Monday October 22 for sentencing after he was found guilty of six counts of indecent assault, one count of sexual assault and one count of indecency with a child following a seven-day trial.

Woodward was jailed for a total of 13 years.

Victims of sexual offences are granted lifelong anonymity under the Sexual Offences Act. Anyone who identifies a victim of a sexual offence, or posts information that could lead to the identification of a victim could face prosecution.

IN 1872 whilst digging the foundations for a building at Middlewood Hospital, workmen found the remains of a group of large fossilised tree stumps, preserved in hard sandstone.

The fossils were identified as the remains of huge trees forming part of an ancient forest. The trees grew about 310million years ago in a period of time called the Carboniferous.

Upon discovery the tree roots were protected within the building that was subsequently built on the site. In the early 2000s the site of Middlewood Hospital and grounds was redeveloped as

Wadsley Park Village. As the tree stumps were subject to a special preservation order the tree stumps were not destroyed and indeed to protect them remain buried on open space adjacent to Middlewood Drive on Wadsley Park Village.

With support from Natural England, Sheffield Museums, The Geological Association and Sheffield Area Geology Trust a double sided information board and a cast of one of the roots has recently been placed at the site and has already attracted interest from local residents.

HISTORY

From humble beginnings, leaving school at I5 to start work as a tractor driver and general farm worker with wages of £20 per week back then in I975, I realised there must be more to life, so I went to work for the first double glazing company set up in the Sheffield area called Radiant Superglaze.

After two years working there, learning all the skills, I decided to set up a business of my own, manufacturing double glazing in the old stables at The Coach and Horses pub in Stocksbridge.

The company soon grew to a £2 million pound turnover that enabled me to buy my own factory and I won the Yorkshire Television Young Business Man ofthe Year Award back in I983.

Public consultation on plans to close on December 5 THE Council is launching its 10-year draft masterplan for the Parkwood Springs site, which includes Wardsend Cemetery and the former Viridor Landfill site.

The consultation on the draft masterplan, which will now be open to public consultation for the next six weeks, is proposing to create a higher quality public open space around a proposed outdoor leisure development by Extreme Destinations that offers a range of activities and visitor facilities.

Parkwood Springs, home to one of the only cemeteries in the country to be divided by a railway line, was formerly a medieval deer park. Now, Sheffield City Council has unveiled ambitions for the site to become a 150-hectare giant urban country park stretching from Wardsend near Hillsborough all the way to Neepsend.

It outlines a vision for the whole of Parkwood Springs to align the ambitions of the local communities; plans for outdoor leisure development; the complicated history of the landfill site; and the needs of a growing city particu-

larly at nearby Kelham Island, Neepsend and Woodside where new homes are being developed or are being planned for.

There will be consultation events at Sheffield Winter Garden on November 12 from 11.30am to 3.30pm, and at Shirecliffe Community Centre on Wednesday October 30 from 3pm to 7.30pm where people can discuss their hopes for the site, which rises steeply from the River Don and has superb view across Sheffield to the Peak District.

Parkwood Springs has long been a prominent feature on Sheffield’s landscape, with uses as a medieval deer park, woodlands, railway, housing, allotments, Victorian cemetery and landfill sites.

Wardsend Cemetery, which was transferred into the care of Sheffield Council in the 1980s, has under gone huge improvements and is now used as a venue for performance, heritage tours and nature events. It is the final resting place of Lieutenant George Lambert VC and many Victorian Sheffielders, including photographer WT Furniss and vic-

tims of the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864.

Howard Bayley, from the Friends of Wardsend Cemetery, said: “Parkwood is this amazing accessible space and Wardsend Cemetery is the northern gateway to it. The cemetery dates back to 1857 and has 30,000 people buried there, normal, every day Sheffielders. We’re very keen to see Wardsenddevelop for its history and its wildlife but also as a centre for art and performance.�

Neill Schofield, from the Friends of Parkwood Springs, added: “Parkwood Springs is an amazing green space so close to the city centre where you feel you’re in the middle of the countryside when you’re in one of England’s biggest cities. The masterplan will look at the whole area and helping it to improve further.�

£3m programme will begin to improve many of the city's Victorian-era culverts SHEFFIELD’S Victorian-era network of watercourse culverts are set to be transformed in a £3m revamp which will benefit nearly 4,000 homes and support more than 1,000 businesses.

Sheffield City Council’s cabinet has now approved plans to provide £936,700 towards the culvert renewal programme.

The remainder of funding is being provided by DEFRA and the Environment Agency.

It means work can begin on protecting nine of the city’s 48 primary culverts, measuring more than 9,625 metre (6.4miles).

These have been identified as those in most need of repair or replacement.

The work on the nine culverts forms the first phase of wider plans to refurbish all 48 primary culverts across the city. The scheme will strengthen culverts for the next 70 years, benefiting: 3,870 homes 1,035 businesses 18 development sites 11 educational facilities

“That is why we are taking decisive action to protect our city from the risk of flooding and making us more able to tackle the threat of man-made climate change.

“This will in turn help our communities and businesses to thrive. There is much to do, but the renewal of these nine important culverts and the long-term plans already in place across our waterways show how seriously we are taking this.”

James Mead, Environment Agency flood risk adviser, said: “We are very pleased to be working in collaboration with

Sheffield City Council on this project, which is part of a catchment-wide approach to reducing flood risk across the city.

“Sheffield City Council is leading one of the largest flood programmes planned in the country and we continue to support them in delivering this.”

The council’s flood management team is hoping to progress six new flood schemes valued at £120m as part of the Government’s National Flood Investment Programme.

We have already built one of these schemes – new flood defences in the Lower Don Valley at a cost of £20m.

MAZEHILL CHILDREN POPPY TRIBUTE

THE children at Mazehill Nursery have spent the last week painting and printing hundreds of poppies to commemorate the centenary of World War One.

Nursery manager Rachel Stocks said: “We wanted to mark ‘everyone remembered’ – we feel it is important for the next generation of children to remember the sacrifices that were made and not to be forgotten through the years.”

An EPPiC Snow White show Bolsterstone Quilters present

Doughty’s Roadshow On Saturday 3rd November 2018 In Wadsley Church Hall 10.30 till 2.30pm Worral Road Sheffield S6 4BB SNOW has fallen at High Green Musical Theatre Group as their annual apple biting top notch festive pantomime is the fairest in the land.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a time-honoured classic and this year’s cast will be putting their own spin on the story of true love triumphing over evil.

Like all good pantomimes, there will be thrills and spills along the way, Snow White will fall for the evil Queen Evelyn tricks whilst the Dwarfs try to protect her.

The audience will be invited to put their energies into supporting the good-guy’s and undermining the evil Queen Evelyn

who is responsible for setting up the whole sorry situation.

This year the starring roles are taken by Sian Marshall playing Snow White and Chloe Beech playing Prince Harry.

Sian is returning to the society after last being on stage with us at the tender age of 11. She said: “It is fantastic to be returning to a place where I spent many years as a child and I’m delighted to be playing the role of Snow White.

It will be just as much fun for the cast as the audience and we’re all confident everyone who comes along will have a great time.”

Leisure Centre seeks support for funds STOCKSBRIDGE Community Leisure Centre is asking for people to vote for it in a Aviva’s Community Fund awards programme.

A spokesperson for the centre said: “After re-opening our man pool in April 2016 the Centre (SCLC) was then fully operational both dry and wet side.

This ensured the full Centre was back up and running by the community with facilities accessible to all ages with facilities such as; our gym, squash courts, multi use sports hall, indoor bowling green and now both learner and main pool.

“After this fantastic achievement the Centre has gone from strength to strength. Now we have the major things sorted (a leisure centre facility open to the public run by the community) we can now focus our time and efforts on what the community and customers need to ensure they have a great experience with us.

Only around one in 10 Universal Credit claimants are unemployed, and most get a job after 12 weeks.

Most people receiving Universal Credit longer term are people in work struggling on low incomes and people unable to work because they are seriously ill or disabled, or those unable to work because they are carers.

Seven million families are affected and many stand to lose more than £2000 a year when they are forced to move to Universal Credit from Tax credits and other ‘legacy’ benefits. Half of the children in the UK live in families which will be affected by the imposition of Universal Credit.

The Trussell Trust, which runs many Foodbanks up and down the country states that Foodbank use has increased 52% in areas where Universal Credit has already been rolled out. We are protesting about this dreadful policy, but trying to do something practical to be of help to local people too. Universal Credit is a cruel and heartless Tory response to people in need.

Keeping the Christmas buzz alive as the kids grow up EVEN for parents, Christmas time with young children can be a truly wonderful experience. With the children still fully immersed within the magic of the Christmas story, it is virtually impossible for the parents to not get at least a little carried along on the wave of excitement too.

As the kids begin to get a little bit older, however, the magic can slowly start to disappear. This can be hugely disappointing for both children and parents alike. There are ways to keep the magic alive, however.

Accept Christmas has changed The first and most important step is to simply accept that Christmas has changed, and that if it is still going to be magical, it needs to be different. All families will go through that one transition year, where Christmas just isn’t the same anymore, but after that, it is time for a change.

Alternative Christmas options Although there are some wonderful aspects of a traditional Christmas, there is nothing wrong with changing it a little, from time to time. If the magic of Christmas has started to fade, it is worth looking at some alternative ideas.

Winter sun One option could be to replace gift-giving with a family holiday. The costs will be similar and, when children get to a certain age, they will be more excited about a twoweek break in the sun, than new clothes and computer games. This will also give parents a chance to get away for a muchneeded holiday. If you still want to be with the rest of your family, you could plan a large group vacation. This will also reduce the costs, with shared accommodation and transport etc. being much cheaper.

Spend Christmas Day out of the house Especially with teenagers, spending the whole day cooped-up at home can be too much. Why not find a great pub or restaurant where you can spend at least part of the day, in order to get some muchneeded space? You could also plan to meet friends and family there.

Ski trip A ski trip is the perfect treat at Christmas, if you can find some good snow. Although it can be expensive, if it comes at the cost of other presents, it will certainly be affordable. The benefit of a ski trip over a summer sun holiday is that there is always something for everyone to be doing. It can be energetic, for those testosterone-riddled teenagers, or relaxed and laid-back for their parents. There is nothing better than

having a nice cold beer and some great food halfway up a piste.

Keep everybody happy Fundamentally, all of these above options revolve around the same premise, which is to keep everybody happy.

This can be increasingly complicated as children get older. It is also difficult if there is a big age-gap between the children.

The best way to ensure that everyone is happy is to discuss it with the family and then seek a compromise.

These things rarely run 100% smoothly, but if you work together, you are sure to get the best results.

Most importantly, though, don’t forget your own enjoyment in a bid to please the children.

Statistics show that thousands of people will visit A&E every year for treatment of a firework-related injury*. But with some basic first aid skills, everyone can be prepared to help in a firework first aid emergency.

Firework First Aid Burns or scalds If someone’s got a burn or scald: • Move the person away from the heat • Place the burn or scald under cool running water for 10 minutes minimum

• Remove jewellery and clothing around the area, unless stuck to the burn

• Then take or send them straight to hospital.

• Cover the burn loosely, lengthways with kitchen film to prevent infection

If someone’s inhaled smoke fumes:

Smoke inhalation

• Move them away from the smoke so they can breathe in some fresh air

Debris in the eye

• Help them sit down in a comfortable position and loosen any tight clothing around their neck to help them breathe normally

• If they don’t recover quickly, call 999/112 for an ambulance.

• Tell them not to rub it, so they don’t make it worse

Sheffield College degree students perform Armistice centenary play SHEFFIELD College performing arts degree students will explore the theme of war to mark the centenary of the Armistice next month.

Fragments of War comprises a collection of drama, songs and poems to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the Armistice – the cessation of fighting on land, sea and air in World War 1 on November 11th 1918.

Eighteen students, who are completing either the BA Honours or Foundation Degree in Performing Arts or Musical Theatre, are involved in the production.

Jo Beadle, Performing Arts Lecturer, The Sheffield College, said: “This is a very absorbing and entertaining show which involves tragedy, emotion and humour and has really tested and developed students’ professional skills.”

She added: “At rehearsals we adapted the original script, adding in some new material based on local research and eye-witness accounts of

She added: “I really enjoy the creativity of the performing arts and the fact you feel part of a family. There’s a very

THE Steve Gee Merit Cup Final, played at Stocksbridge Park Steels’ Look Local Stadium on Thursday saw CBC Premier Oughtibridge WM come out 3-0 victors against Division One Norton Oaks B with first half goals from Danny Booth and a Matt Harrison double.

That gave Oughtibridge the impetus again and when a Callum Chambers venomous cross could only be parried by Oaks keeper Tom Burnham, Matt Harrison was on hand to double his side’s lead. Harrison quickly picked up his second of the night to give Oughtibridge a three goal half time lead.

Oughtibridge quickly got into their stride and the Oaks defence was at full stretch to keep them at bay, but just as it looked like they had got over the worst of the pressure a terrific effort

by Danny Booth found the top corner to put Premier League side ahead.

The second half was a more even affair with Oaks even threatening to pull a goal back, but The War memorial always looked threatening on the break and should have extended the lead but Chas Tunnard’s great effort went just wide.

Long slog in Suffolk for Woodhouse ON Saturday Wheeler John Woodhouse travelled down to Suffolk where 90 riders set off from Girton Cambridgeshire on a sunny but chilly morning.

The 215km Cambridge Autumnal Audax passed through the historic market towns of Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds to the half way point at Framlingham.

Rain and a headwind made for a difficult return ride back west via the Maglia Rosso cafe at Hawstead to Girton.

Woodhouse finished in 12h 20m, 1h 15m inside the cut off time.

On Sunday Dave Hudson, Austin Watson and Chris Jenkins rode a 65 mile loop to Retford while Tony Lodge, Rodger Holmes, Steve Myatt and guest Dave Betts rode a 50 mile loop to Oldcotes.

This Sunday’s ride is to Slaithwaite. Meet at Brewers Fayre Wombwell at 9:15am. Visitors are welcome.

CHURCH COME OUT ON TOP IN LOCAL DERBY PENISTONE Church eased to a 4-2 win against Athersley Rec on Saturday in front of a bumper crowd of 179 in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division.

A Sam Scrivens brace along with goals from Kieran Ryan and Nathan Keightley gave Church a home win with a Kieran Scargill penalty and a late Josh Wright strike hitting back for the visitors.

York RI RUFC 23 - 0 Stocksbridge RUFC THE Stocksbridge RUFC lads were looking to get back to winning ways as they made the journey up to York on Saturday, but unfortunately it was a game of fine margins where they were unable to make an impact as York RI ended the game with a comfortable 23-0 victory.

Stocksbridge welcomed back the old faces of Curt Newton and veteran Brendan Rowett to bolster a forward pack that had been plagued with injuries of late.

The early exchanges were tightly contested and York had the better field position, with Bridge being asked to defend their try line and retain the ball under pressure. This pressure from York finally paid dividends in the form of a penalty to open the scoring after a shot from centre Ben

Westby rode a little too high for the referee’s liking.

Stocksbridge were unable to get a foothold in possession as a slew of penalties conceded meant York could keep the ball deep in opposition territory. Stocksbridge defended resolutely and as soon as the penalty count halted they began to get on the front foot and place pressure back onto the home side.

York, however, took the wind out of the Stocksbridge sails with the game’s first try. A sloppy kick from the fly half under pressure dropped in noman’s land only for the bounce to take it away from the four blue shirts that lay in wait and into the arms of the York centre. Stocksbridge were unable to scramble back and the try was converted to make the scores 10-0.

Bridge immediately responded with sustained pressure and it wasn’t long before the York open side was sent to the bin for a deliberate knock on.

The Stocksbridge back line came into their own with brilliant link play between fly half Paul Kelly and centres Westby and, regular scrum half making a midfield cameo, Adam Frith. Try as they might the final pass eluded them and the scores remained 10-0 at the break.

Stocksbridge began the second half as they ended the first, camping in the opposition 22. They got within touching distance of the white wash before they were turned over at the breakdown. York diffused all momentum moments later with a penalty to stretch their lead to 13 points.

Cooke places sixth in Europe’s toughest road marathon PENISTONE marathon specialist Gareth Cooke came home in sixth place in the tough Snowdonia Marathon which involves 2,800 feet of climbing.

Gareth completed the race in 2:47.28 along with clubmate Damien Briscoe who, despite suffering from flu, completed the race in a time of 3:51.46.

Damien Kilpin had a great run to finish fifth in the aptly named 16 mile fell race Grin n’ Bear it.

He was one of three Penistone runners to complete the route. Penistone results: 5, Damien Kilpin 2.17-35; 69, Chris Charlesworth 2.57-37; 71, Nick Whittingham 3.23-28.

as they were unable to adjust to the referee’s interpretation of the breakdown. York gratefully converted a third penalty to extended the lead to 3 scores, no mean feat with 10 minutes on the clock.

As desperation began to creep into a side eager to register points the York fly half was able to take advantage of a weary defence to run under the sticks to put the game to bed. He converted his own try to make the final score a rather flattering 23-0 to the home side.

Ultimately, it was a day where the scoreline didn’t reflect the balance of play; there were spells of excellent rugby and much to be pleased about heading into their next fixture.

After the game Church manager Ian Richards summed up: “Excellent result today, to win a local derby, it means a lot. It means more than three points to me, Duncan and the lads in that changing room from Penistone and also to the people who have been here before us and those who support us from Penistone, a local derby at whatever level should have a heightened importance and I said that before the game in any local derby you must earn the right to play, you must have the desire and commitment.”

Golf round-up WHAT a difference a week makes! This time last week players were basking in warm, late autumn sunshine. On Saturday, the 39 members who braved the Arctic winds from the north that brought sub-zero temperatures and flurries of snow. G Siddons won the Pro’s Prize with a highly creditable 37 points considering the conditions. D Peace was second with 36 points and G Stainforth third with 34 points.

Earlier in the week the Dragons faced even stronger winds for the first round of their Christmas Cracker competition. J Moss won with 38 points, beating M Siddall with the same score, but a better back nine. M Bradwell was third with 36 points.

On the social side, the Ladies Section has arranged a fashion show that will take place on November 7 and it starts at 7pm.

Everyone is welcome, and you do not need to be a member of the club to attend. There will be lots of clothes and accessories available to buy on the night. Why not come along and pick up some presents for Christmas.

national title, beating Mary Wilkinson (Yorkshire Road Club) by a mere 0.6 seconds.

FIONA Burnie and Andrew Feather defied the cold conditions, storming their way to National HillClimb Championship glory for the first time in their careers.

The pair set off out of the blocks next to each other with Burnie out first, posting a time of 3:05.8 before torrential rain hit the Sheffield area. Wilkinson couldn’t match Burnie’s time and had to settle for the silver medal.

Feather (BCR Racing), a former elite road racer, beat a top field including the past two winners of the highest honour in hill-climbing to snatch his maiden title with a course record performance on a cold and blustery day in Stocksbridge.

“I was really pleased, I initially thought the course would be a bit too short for me because I prefer the slightly longer climbs but obviously managed to get the win,” said Feather, who clocked 2:18.8.

“I had a game plan today that I wasn’t going to go off too hard up until the bridge - in the last 100 metres I was dying a slow death getting slower and slower but managed to keep going to the line.”

Feather produced a strong ride to beat the likes of Calum Brown (Team B38-Underpin Racing) who was second and 2016 champion Adam Kenway (Vitus Pro Cycling).

After winning 11 out of 14 hill climbs in the run-up to the event, Feather spoke of his preparations which included five consecutive wins, and added: “I think you’re testing yourself against a national field when you come up north.

Fiona Burnie said: “A lot of these climbs are iconic so they attract good fields. I wanted to see how I would fare against the other guys.”

The course in Stocksbridge hadn’t been the original venue for the championship, but Feather made the most of the day despite reservations about whether he would be suited to Pea Royd Lane, and added: “It’s a difficult climb to gage because it’s not an all-out sprint.”

“I thought because I won three weeks ago I thought I had a chance of winning but obviously it all down to what you do on the day,” revealed Burnie. “Danny Grieves coached me and he helped me prepare perfectly, I wouldn’t have won it without him. And Ben Lane lent me his race wheels so yeah, without Danny helping me I wouldn’t have done it,” said Burnie.

Back in the men’s category, one of the favourites over shorter distances Calum Brown settled for second after posting a time of 2:20.5 – not far off his previous record that was smashed by Feather.

Kenway had the bad luck of setting off later in the day when conditions deteriorated and could only conjure up a third place after crossing the line in 2:21.6.

In the women’s section, the podium spots still to be filled were subsequently done so by Mary Wilkinson in second in 3:06.4 and Kate Mactear (University of Bristol CC), crossing the finish in 3:15.0.

The junior categories were one by Alana Prior (Liv CC Halo Cycles) for the girls with a time of 3:36.0 whilst Joe Baker (Zero BC Development) was the fastest boy in 2:24.9.

The team prize went to Team B38-Underpin Racing for the third successive year for the men’s section who clocked a cumulative time of 7:12.6 whilst a time of 11:46.4 was enough to give Beeston CC the women’s team honours.

Glyndwr Griffiths (73 Degrees CC) was the quickest veteran on scratch, finishing in 2:31.2.
