CHURCHES RECEIVE CHILLING THREATS fraud gardener jailed - PAGE 07

AT least two catholic churches in the area have received threatening letters in the last week and the incidents have been linked to a larger investigation. St Mary’s Catholic Church in High Green and St Thomas Moore in Parson Cross, also a catholic church, both received similar letters.

Father Brown of St Mary’s received a letter which read: “Stop all your services straight away if you don’t your church will be petrol bombed while in service. Continue behind closed doors your congregation members will be stabbed one by one. Blood on your hands (You’ve been warned).

West Midlands Police are tackling the investigation. In a statement, the force said today: “West Midlands Police is investigating after several threatening letters have been sent to mainly churches and supermarkets across the region and officers are aware of a few sent further afield over a period of months.”

Sheffield charity launches campaign to raise ÂŁ1 million for new home A SHEFFIELD charity and school which supports children, adults and families with cerebral palsy and motor disorders, is launching a campaign to raise ÂŁ1 million to build a new home.

Paces was founded 21 years ago and has been based at High Green in the north of the city for most of that time. As well as a popular school rated outstanding by Ofsted, the charity has developed to support adults who are leaping the void from childhood to adulthood as well as supporting those who are living with the impact of Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons or a stroke. A growing number of people are now taking advantage of the unique support provided by the organisation through Conductive Education, and to meet growing demand, a vision of a new, modern, purpose-built home on a new site in Sheffield is being unveiled.

chitecture undertook a six-week project before Christmas to examine options for the future and how a new home might look. Having presented those plans to parents, staff and trustees, the charity is launching a campaign to raise ÂŁ1 million to turn that vision into reality.

Ann Menzies-Blythe, chair of trustees for Paces, said: “21 years on from when a group of parents of children with Cerebral Palsy came together to form Paces, we need to plan for the future – to write our next chapter, to build a new home and raise a million pounds to ensure that can happen. “We want it to be a home that builds on the past with a collective vision for a shared and exciting future, supporting more children, supporting more adults and supporting more families across Sheffield, South Yorkshire and beyond.

businesses, organisations and individuals across Sheffield being asked to come together to support the vision. A series of fundraising activities, workshops and events will be taking place in the coming months, including the charity’s chief executive walking up Mount Kilimanjaro. Dr Spencer Pitfield OBE will travel to Tanzania in September for the trek and hopes to get support from across the city. He commented: “Our ‘A New Home For Paces’ campaign to raise a million pounds aims to show we are not afraid of any challenge and the sky really is the limit for how much we can achieve together to support our amazing work at Paces. My Kilimanjaro challenge is a key part of this and I hope people are able to support me. More information about the campaign can be found at www.newhomeforpaces. co.uk.

Have you been mis-sold your solar panels? Have you purchased ‘self-funding’ solar panels? Did you make the savings that you were promised? If not, TRUE Solicitors LLP may be able to assist you to obtain compensation. Thousands of homeowners across the UK have purchased expensive solar panel systems within the last few years. Many were advised that the solar panels would essentially ‘pay for themselves’ through reduced energy bills and from the financial benefits from the Feed-in-Tariff. They were essentially told that the savings would cover the finance repayments. TRUE Solicitors has, however, been instructed to act for a number of clients whose finance repayments significantly outweigh any benefits that they are receiving. How do I know if I can make a claim? TRUE Solicitors may be able to assist you in obtaining a full or partial refund if you: Purchased the panels within the last 5 years Used a finance agreement or credit card to pay Believe you were misled about the performance of the solar panels Are facing monthly finance repayments greater than the savings generated by the solar panels. Can I make a claim even if the solar panel company is no longer trading? Yes you can! Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act protects consumers who have purchased items costing over £100 using a finance agreement or credit card. This means that the credit company or finance provider is jointly liable for any complaints you may have about the company that installed the panels, even if they have ceased trading.

17th January 2019

www.looklocal.org.uk

What if I only used credit for the deposit payment? If you only used credit to pay for the deposit payment, under the Consumer Credit Act you will still be covered for the full purchase price of the solar panels. As long as the minimum deposit paid on credit was at least £100. How long will the claim take? On average cases can take around 6 months to complete. Case length depends on the time it takes to gather the evidence, and the stance taken by the finance provider when it comes to mis-sold solar panels. Why choose TRUE Solicitors? TRUE Solicitors LLP have a wealth of experience in dealing with claims for mis-sold solar panel systems. We operate a ‘No Win, No Fee’ service, so you only pay us if you win.

If you believe that you may have an eligible claim contact TRUE Solicitors today for an initial FREE no obligation assessment. Call us on 0800 0149 565 (Mon-Thu 8am-9pm, Fri 8am-8pm) to speak to a member of our expert team, or submit an enquiry form via our website www.true.co.uk. Do not delay, as there are strict time limits for pursuing mis-sold solar panel cases.

MIDDLEWOOD DRUG DEALER JAILED

Pictured L-R: Remy Powell, Josiah Bent

A MIDDLEWOOD man has been sent to prison after admitting Class A drugs offences, following an investigation by Rotherham officers. Josiah Stephen Bent, 26, formerly of Middlewood Lodge, Sheffield, and Remy Trey Powell, 25, were each sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison when they appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday January 9. They pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, namely crack cocaine and heroin, at an earlier hearing.

1

The court heard how officers in Rotherham stopped a vehicle the pair were travelling in, in November 2016.

“Both men were from Sheffield and I am pleased they admitted responsibility for this crime before the courts.

Upon searching the vehicle, police found multiple wraps of suspected Class A drugs. When they were forensically tested, the contents were revealed to be crack cocaine and heroin.

“Criminals who seek the sanctuary of other areas within South Yorkshire to conduct criminal activity should know that they are not safe.

Sergeant Plaistow from Rotherham’s Organised Crime Team said: “These two individuals were stopped carrying significant quantities of Class A drugs, with clear intentions to supply into the Rotherham area.

“As an organisation, South Yorkshire Police will relentlessly pursue those individuals and seek to prosecute and disrupt their criminal enterprise.”

WILD AT HEART HILLSBOROUGH PHOTO CLUB TO BENEFIT FROM NEW FUNDING WILD at Heart – a community project run by Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust – has received £167,758 of National Lottery funding to help over 1,000 vulnerable and isolated adults in Sheffield and Rotherham improve their lives through nature over the next three years.

Wild at Heart works specifically with adults aged 50 years and over. The programme was set up to deliver wildlife-related activities for older people and other vulnerable and isolated adults in Sheffield and Rotherham that will improve their health and wellbeing, reduce isolation and give them the confidence to get out and about in their community. It uses a hobby-based approach to give people opportunities to try new things and gain the confidence to continue on their own or with family or friends. Over the last five years, more than 4,000 people in Sheffield and Rotherham, with an average age of 70, have taken part in Wild at Heart through more than 700 nature-based activity sessions. Fraudster local gardener sentenced A LOCAL gardener and handyman has been sentenced to 20 months in jail, suspended for two years, after he defrauded a vulnerable elderly Sheffield resident out of more than £6,000.

Over the course of a few months in early 2018, the investigation revealed that Maycock had defrauded his victim out of more than £6,000, telling her he needed the money for building materials.

and without any thought to the victim. The victim who had lost her husband and was trying to look after her property calls on you for assistance. £6,400 plus more appears to have gone missing.

Steven Maycock, 35, of Stanley Road, Stocksbridge pleaded guilty to an offence under the Fraud Act 2006 and was sentenced on Friday December 21 at Sheffield Crown Court.

He had promised to carry out repairs to the garden building and rebuild the porch on the victim’s house. He told her he had fitted a new security door to her garden building, even giving her a key as reassurance.

“You have conned an old lady and you should be bitterly ashamed. You’ve blown that money on gambling, drugs and alcohol instead of sorting yourself out. The victim feels let down and upset, what you did to her is massive, who can she now trust, she should not be in that situation.”

He was also ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work, banned from any contact with the victim and required to do six months rehab for his alcohol/drug use. Maycock was brought to court by Sheffield Council Trading Standards. The court heard that, while trading as a gardener, Maycock befriended the victim and created a position of trust with her over a number of years. He presented himself as honest and hardworking and offered to carry out building repair work for a fraction of the cost of other builders. Money was handed over in advance but no materials were purchased and no work was completed by Maycock. Trading Standards were alerted by a PCSO from South Yorkshire Police who had been approached by a taxi driver, concerned that he had driven the victim to the bank many times and each time she had told him she needed money to pay her builder.

He put dates in her diary when tradesmen were coming to rebuild her porch and told her part of the garden cottage roof had been repaired. None of this was true. When questioned by trading standards officers, Maycock changed his story a number of times. He claimed he had purchased building materials and these were stored in a secure lock-up, then claimed he had been assisted by another man who had taken the money until finally admitting that there were no building materials in storage and he had spent the money himself. The elderly and vulnerable widow trusted Maycock so completely, that when Trading Standards officers exposed his fraud, she found it difficult to accept his wrongdoing. Sentencing Maycock, his honour Judge Dixon said: “This is a terrible offence for your own greed

Councillor Karen McGowan, cabinet assistant for Environment at Sheffield City Council, said: “This was an awful crime against a vulnerable individual and it’s with great thanks to the local community that this predator has been stopped. It is our duty to prevent such offences and we will always act on information and work hard to protect residents from people like Mr Maycock. “Our Not Born Yesterday Campaign has increased awareness of these types of crime and has seen many offenders brought to justice. Unfortunately these crimes are still too common and I would encourage anyone who suspects or witnesses fraudulent activity, to report it so that we can protect more people in Sheffield from ruthless scammers and rogue traders.”

Team Green Moor bags £4,000 from Tesco community grant TEAM Green Moor is delighted to announce it has bagged £4,000 from the Tesco’s Bags of Help community grant scheme. Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants raised from the sale of carrier bags awarded to thousands of local community projects every year. Since launching in 2015, it’s provided more than £63 million to over 20,000 local community projects. Millions of shoppers have voted in Tesco stores up and down the country and it can now be revealed Team Green Moor has been awarded £4,000. Work will now begin on bringing the project to life on the Green Moor Interactive Nature Trail. Building on the success in winning four Gold Awards in the 2018 RHS Yorkshire in Bloom competition, Team Green Moor plan to develop an interactive nature trail around Green Moor, for children and adults alike, to make them aware of the flora, fauna and biodiversity in their community

Green Moor is a small rural community, with no shop, pub or community centre. The only communal facilities are the Church, Children's Playground and a number of 'green spaces' reclaimed from the former quarries which once provided employment for the community. The aim is to allow the community to share their use and gain pleasure and enjoyment from the flora, fauna and biodiversity to be found in them. The trail will start at the Children's Playground, and then wind through the Delf ending at the Isle of Skye. The benefit to the community and its visitors will be the provision of educational resources to allow all to gain a better understanding of their environment and how we can work together to preserve, protect and improve it for others use into the future Alec Brown, Tesco’s Head of Community, said: “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers. It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community. We can’t wait to see the projects come to life.”

Voting ran in stores throughout September and October with customers choosing which local project they would like to get the top award using a token given to them at the checkout. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups each time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions are awarded funding. Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said: “Bags of Help continues to enable local communities up and down Britain to improve the local spaces and places that matter to them. The diversity of projects that are being funded shows that local communities have a passion to create something great in their area. We are pleased to be able to be a part of the journey and provide support and encouragement to help local communities thrive.” Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www. tesco.com/bagsofhelp.

Superintendent Paul McCurry said: “For our local communities and businesses in the west of Sheffield, you shouldn’t see any change to the level of service offered – if anything, changing the responsibilities and the coverage of our local teams means that we will be able to more effectively respond to the issues that concern you most. “We have increased our staffing within the North West with the addition of a sergeant and two police constables who will be based at Deepcar. “You’ll see the change across our social media pages, where the teams will post information and updates about incident that affect you.”

Appeal for witnesses ROADS Policing officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward following a reported fail to stop collision in December, in which a cyclist suffered serious injuries. One of the first jobs of wedding planning – and arguably the most important job – will be looking at wedding venues. That’s why it’s important to ask these questions to venues when you’re on the search…

Take your time when you look for venues. You want to get the place you love for the best price, which sounds a lot easier than it actually is. When you visit the hotels, fields, churches and castles, do it with your partner by your side, and make sure you’re happy you’ll get a good service. These must-ask questions will put you on the right track. How many people does this venue accommodate?

You need to find out how many people your venue can accommodate. The venue will be one of the first things you organise, and wedding plans change constantly, so even if you know you’re having a small number of guests, ask this question. It might only accommodate for 20 and you want 80.

Ask if you can change the number of people attending nearer the date too; you don’t know how many of your guests will be able to make it after all.

to ask about hidden fees here too! Some venues have a ‘corkage’ fee if you bring your own alcohol. If you hire your own caterers, ask if there are kitchen facilities available – if caterers have to bring in their own refrigerators and ovens, they might charge extra.

Unfortunately, many venues have hidden costs that you really need to be aware of. Ask about the rental fee, cancellation policy, the payment plan, overtime fee and everything else you feel they might charge you for. This avoids any nasty surprises and gets all the awkward questions out of the way. Even marquee hire companies have hidden costs. Do you offer catering?

You may have already arranged for a wedding caterer, but it’s still worth checking if the venue do. It may be a lot cheaper or better quality. It’s good to keep your options open. Remember

Specialists in Mother of the Bride and Groom, Guest Outfits, Races etc.

What dates are available? If you have your heart set on a particular date and your venue is available on that day, still ask this question. You might discover they’re available on a bank holiday weekend or the price is considerably better on a different day. Weigh up all your options. Consider your guests when choosing a date. Do you have a list of suppliers? Sometimes venues will have a list of ‘preferred’ or ‘recommended’ suppliers. It’s important for your suppliers to work well together so it might be worth referring to this as much as possible. Also, if your venue recommends them, they are probably good suppliers to use. Trust your venue. They’ve hosted a lot of weddings.

Can we setup the day before?

This is a question your suppliers may ask you. Find out when you first book with your venue, and plan your day logically in your head. Ask them about how the whole process works with them. If you’re planning on bringing a lot of decoration, ask if you can set up the day before. If you’re happy with their answers to the above questions, you love the look and style of the venue and it’s within your budget, book it! After you’ve booked your venue, you can enjoy fun stuff like cake tasting, dress fittings and hen do planning. This is just an easy guide for you to follow to make sure you’re asking the right questions. Article courtesy of www.ukbrideblog. co.uk

quick fixes anyone can perform IT’S a common misconception that you need at least some skill with your hands to improve your home. This simply isn’t the case. Here are some quick fixes anyone can perform, all of which come with little fuss and plenty of satisfaction.

a little. Allow to sit for a few minutes then gently begin to scrape from the edges using a credit card, ideally old just in case it snaps. If you need to degrease the surface afterwards use washing up liquid.

Door hinges

Linoleum scuffs

One of the most irritating things in life is a squeaky door hinge. Simply spray a little WD-40 onto the hinges, moving the door back and forth to make sure the liquid is worked in, and you should be set. No WD-40? No worries, rubbing petroleum jelly in can also do the trick.

Rub the scuff with white toothpaste, using a dry cloth. Alternatively, you can use a pencil eraser. Or, if you have some to hand, our old friend WD-40 can work just as well. Once you’re done degrease with washing up liquid and water.

Squeaky floor Although only a temporary solution, you’d be surprised what a little talcum powder can do when it comes to silencing creaking floorboards. Worn caning Over time, the caning on chairs is likely to sag. You can easily tighten this up with a sponge and warm water, rub the water in and allow to dry overnight, repeating if necessary. Stained tub Mix equal measures of cream of tartar with baking soda and enough lemon juice so that a paste forms. Rub this into the stain with a cloth, allow around half an hour for it to sit, and then rinse thoroughly with water.

BIG WIN BRINGS CURTAIN DOWN ON REGULAR SEASON Nestle Rowntree 17-37 Stocksbridge RUFC STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby finished their regular season fixtures with a five-try demolition of lowly York based Nestle Rowntrees Rugby, ending a frustrating run of four defeats and bagging a try scoring bonus point with a resounding 37-17 victory. Although they have now finished out of the play off places, this win showed glimpses of the real Stocksbridge Rugby with four of the tries being scored by the back three.

A strong Stocksbridge squad travelled to York with a point to prove and determined to see Menzie Yere off in style as he completed his short stint with the club, to return to Rugby League action.

Mon - Fri 8.30 am - 5.00pm Sat 8.30 am - 12.00 noon Stocksbridge again allowed the home side back into the contest, conceding needless penalties and Bowskill turned from hero to villain as he bounced off the Rowntrees winger allowing a soft try. This was compounded just a few minutes later as further weak defence led to another score for the home side, raising their expectations. Stocksbridge again had the final say of a gripping first half when a sweeping back line move, straight from the training paddock, rewarded the hard work-

ing Westby as he scampered in the corner for a well deserved try, again on the back of some good interplay between Kelly, Yere and Jack Spencer. Although the result was never in doubt, the home side, to their credit refused to buckle in the second half. Bowskill nudged home a simple penalty for a high shot on Yere to extend the lead and as Coach Keenan emptied the bench, the visitors were reduced to 14 men as Booth saw yellow for throwing and missing with a

haymaker as a Rowntree defender killed the ball on the wrong side of the ruck. Further Stocksbridge pressure was rewarded with another successful penalty from Bowskill, as the referee grew tired of the home sides antics in trying to kill the ball to relieve the onslaught. Stocksbridge created a number of further chances, but struggled for that final killer pass until Frith and Kelly again combined to give winger Joe Jones a walk in for the

final try of the game. Bowskill converted with the last act of a real confidence-boosting win for the Piggies. “We showed today what we’re capable of,” said a smiling Rhys Keenan afterwards, “It’s just a shame we’ve got it together a bit too late for the play offs, but we’ll be going all out for some late season silverware in the plate and vase competitions we have coming up.”

Steels pay tribute before draw Stocksbridge PS 0 Marske United 0 By Dave Rhodes Photo: Ian Revitt THERE was a minute of silence to mark the passing of Deborah Holmes before the game against Marske United on Saturday – a game that ended in a 0-0 draw. The point, added to the four picked up since the turn of the year, is a notable improvement in fortune for the Steels but they’ve still a long way to go. The wind played a bit part in the match and it was a game of few chances, although Lemon and Ruthven came close on the counter. The poor playing conditions resulted in little expansive play from both teams in a game spoilt by the gale force strength of the wind. Steels put in a spirited second half performance and with their backs against the wall they worked extremely hard to a man, compacted the game well, put bodies on the line and held firm. PENISTONE Church took a fine 3-1 win over Garforth Town. After going a goal

down, Church fought back and were 2-1 up at the break with goals from Sam Scrivens and Jordan Coduri. And it was Scrivens who sealed the points after the break, finding the target on 80 minutes. Steels reserves travelled to Handsworth for their latest league game and put in a convincing performance to take the three points. Steels took the lead from a corner when a good delivery from Berresford was only cleared to the edge of the box and Oliver Warren fired the ball into the roof of the goal. Steels went further in front when Townsend back heeled in from a header by Adams and the second half started well with the third goal soon arriving. Warren provided a good ball into the box from a free kick and Webster produced a well directed header into the goal. Steels didn’t give Handsworth any opportunities in the second half and got stronger as the game went on. The three points which puts them level

with second placed Dodworth MWFC and three points behind top spot. Their next game is against Dodworth MWFC at Bracken Moor on Saturday with a 3pm kick off.

Elsewhere, Oughtibridge War Memorial were left to rue missed opportunities as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Redmires. Chas Tunnard gave the home side the lead when he converted from a great cross by Wilson

Coupe. The same player could have had a hat-trick if he hadn’t spurned a one on one and then hit the bar with a venomous strike.
