WOMAN KILLED ON PENISTONE ROAD NAMED A 31-year-old woman, who died following a collision in Sheffield earlier this month, has been formally named as Samantha Duxbury.

Her family have also released this picture of her and have asked that their privacy continue to be respected at this difficult time.

At around 8.30pm last Friday January 11, a black Subara WRX STi was travelling along Langsett Road, towards Hillsborough

when it was involved in a collision with Miss Duxbury, at the junction of Normandale Road and Infirmary Road.

Miss Duxbury was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Prior to the collision, Miss Duxbury was with a 51-year-old man on Langsett Road. Enquiries into her death are continuing and officers remain keen to hear from anyone who saw the collision, or

who saw Miss Duxbury and the man before.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 quoting incident number 817 of 11 January 2019.

The 51-year-old man arrested in connection with Miss Duxbury’s death remains released under investigation.

Steel Valley Project complete collaboration OVER a seven-month period in 2018, the Steel Valley Project carried out work on a project for Sheffield City Council Housing and Neighbourhood Service.

The project helped people in council housing who were struggling to keep on top of their gardens.

The Project’s usual working environment sees them in local woodland, parks and moorland, so this added a new dimension to their work.

However, it fits perfectly with one of the key aims, which is to “help people understand, value and care for their local environment to help create healthy and sustainable communities.”

Environmental Project Officer, Richard Saunders, described our intervention as a “helping hand” with volunteers clearing gardens back to a manageable level so that tenants felt able to continue with the

Over the length of the project, SVP worked on 11 different gardens in the Stocksbridge, Deepcar, High Green and Stannington areas. Strimming was the most commonly required work but some gardens also needed overgrown hedges cutting back. This meant the purchase of a new hedge trimmer for the charity and additional certified training for staff and volunteers.

Speaking afterwards, she said: “I was delighted to go out and work on the project for a day. I’m very sad to see it come to an end as I saw first-hand the positive benefits it made to residents who have no other assistance. Well done to the Steel Valley Project staff and volunteers who have been supporting residents in the Upper Don Valley through this project.”

Tenants benefitting from the project are now able to use gardens which were previously too overwhelming to tackle and had become no-go zones. In one case, reduced mobility problems had made it difficult for the tenant to continue looking after a hedge. Another garden had become so wild that it took two vanloads of garden waste to clear.

Speaking on behalf of the Steel Valley Project, project manager Tom Newman said: “It’s been a good project for everybody involved, helping individuals in the local community, giving our volunteers new skills and training, and supporting Sheffield City Council’s Housing and Neighbourhood Services. I have also seen the sense of satisfaction which our volunteer teams experienced from helping people and completing the gardens.”

Stewart Smith, 51, was struck at around 3.10pm on Wednesday December 12 on the A616 Stocksbridge Bypass, between Wortley and the Fox Valley complex.

Stewart suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. He remains in hospital.

The car involved is described as being a metallic blue Toyota Avensis, believed to be model from 2007 onwards.

The vehicle failed to stop and is believed to have left the scene in the direction of Flouch roundabout.

Stewart said of the incident: “I was hit from behind by a metallic blue Toyota Avensis, 2007 onwards.

The driver didn’t stop. The police know it is this make of car because of the debris that was left behind.

“I still can’t work out as to why the driver didn’t see me, it was daylight, visibility was good, there were

two lanes to drive in, I had over £500 of working lights on my bike - both switched on, fluro North wave winter boots and a white Stocksbridge Cycling Club issue jacket.

“I was wearing no dark clothing and yes, I was wearing a helmet. If you are the driver and your conscience is eating away at you, hand yourself in.

As it is almost a month ago, clearly you haven’t got a conscience but someone knows who you are.

“If anyone knows of a blue Toyota Avensis that has had work done to the nearside please phone 101 quoting incident number 488 of the 12/12/18.

“Stop this driver from doing it again and hopefully, it won’t be you that gets a phone call saying a loved one has been seriously injured or been killed by this piece of scum.”

Salmon found in River Don weirs away from a ‘fish highway’ between the sea and salmon spawning grounds. The penultimate pass, at Sanderson’s Weir, is expected to be completed within the next year.

Jerome Masters Environment Agency Fisheries Technical Specialist said: “Although this individual reached the centre of Sheffield, the final two fish passes are still needed in order to re-establish a spawning population.

“Adult salmon do not feed when they enter rivers from the sea and so have only the energy reserves stored in their body to with which to propel them upstream and enable them to spawn successfully.

AN adult salmon has been found in the River Don confirming the species’ return to Sheffield after an absence of 150 years.

The body of the 79cm (31 inches) salmon was reported to the Environment Agency by a member of the public. It appears to have died from natural causes.

Coincidentally, January marked the beginning of the International Year of the Salmon, an initiative to support the conservation and restoration of wild salmon species.

Following the recent push to improve water quality and introduce more fish passes to facilitate the migration of our native fish, the re-colonisation

of salmon in the Don is now becoming a reality.

The Environment Agency’s partnerships with the Don Catchment River Trust, Yorkshire Water, Canal and River Trust and Sheffield City Council has introduced multiple new fish passes.

These allow fish to move along the river, easing their migration past weirs. The route is only two

spending two years at sea. Most salmon return home to the river where they were born, but some will stray up the ‘wrong’ river.

This is how they can recolonise rivers where they may have become locally extinct, such as the River Don.

Examination by Environment Agency fisheries specialists confirmed the female fish had recently spawned. Salmon often die after spawning, consequently, there is no reason to suspect anything other than a natural cause of death. Prior to spawning, the fish probably weighed between 10 to 12 lbs (4.5 to 5.5 kg).

Ben Gillespie, Yorkshire Water’s lead environmental advisor said: “The confirmation of salmon in Sheffield demonstrates our investment in fish passes on the Don is working.

RAISING AWARENESS OF FRAUD RELATED CRIME LAST week, South Yorkshire Police’s dedicated fraud officer, Andy Foster, delivered a presentation on fraud related crime at the Yorkshire Pensioners Convention.

Andy’s role at the event, held at the Hillsborough Arena, was to inform people about the different types of frauds and scams that are most current, how to spot them and what measures they can take to protect themselves.

Andy said: “It’s incredibly important that people are aware of the different types of fraud out there and how to spot a scam.

“A large part of my role is about engaging with the community and giving them the knowledge to be able to spot a scam, such as a fraudulent cold caller for example, as well as what measures they can take to protect themselves.”

Inspection work gets under way to retain street trees

WORK to retain dozens of street trees in Sheffield, which were previously earmarked for replacement, will get under way tomorrow following talks between Sheffield City council, Amey and STAG. Of more than 300 trees originally earmarked for replacement, almost 90 will now be retained indefinitely and many more could also be retained, subject to the outcome of detailed on-street assessments.

The work is the first stage of a new approach to managing the city’s street trees following mediated talks between Sheffield City council, its highways contractor Amey and members of Sheffield Tree Action Group (STAG).

Amey have begun to carry out detailed technical inspections on several street trees with the co-operation of members of STAG. Importantly no trees will be removed there and then, but those that are found to be immediately dangerous or obstructive will be scheduled for replacement as soon as possible.

Darren said: “The additional funding being provided by Amey will allow us to use new and existing engineering treatments in a much more flexible way, monitor trees closely and re-apply treatments where possible. As a result, we should be able to retain trees for an indefinite period as long as the highway remains at a good standard.

The inspections will be carried out by a dedicated team of specially trained and equipped tree and highways specialists.

Members of STAG will be in attendance and local residents will be kept informed.

“Our inspection team will be made up of trained and experienced tree and highways professionals equipped with specialist tools, and will receive independent input from STAG.

Amey Streets Ahead Account Director, Darren Butt, is keen to emphasise that no trees will be removed during the inspections, but the team could carry out highways alterations immediately

“The team itself will not remove any tree but has authority to carry out immediate highway remedial work to

safeguard the tree, when required. If inspections are planned on a tree near to your home, we will contact you beforehand to let you know.

“Crucially, we will still be delivering the long-term benefits of the Streets Ahead contract at no extra cost to Sheffield’s taxpayers.”

Paul Selby of STAG said: “We welcome this new collaborative approach, which we believe will increase the number of trees that can be indefinitely retained, at the same time as increasing our understanding of the reasons why Amey and Sheffield City council say some trees cannot be retained. We encourage residents to come out and see the inspections taking place, if they are able to, to maximise the transparency of the work being done.”

THE People Keeping Well Stocksbridge Volunteering Project is aiming to increase the number of volunteers in the town and surrounding areas.

There are many local voluntary and community groups, offering a wide range of services and support to local people, but they need new volunteers to get involved to be able to continue their activities.

Current volunteers gain a great deal of satisfaction from their activities, from knowing they are helping other people, to getting out and meeting others.

Volunteering can also increase your self confidence and physical health and allows you to learn new skills and be involved in activities that will help you to get into employment or a change of career.

The Volunteer Fayre will showcase some of the organisations which need new members and we encourage people to come along, find out what’s going on, join up and help to make a difference in 2019.

Iceland announces new Stocksbridge store

BRITISH supermarket chain Iceland has announced that the company is opening a brand new store at Fox Valley this spring.

The company is taking a 6,975 sq. ft. unit in between Aldi and Home Bargains at Fox Valley, fit out work will start next month with plans for an April opening.

The new Iceland store will create more than 30 jobs in the area.

Iceland is recognised as the UK’s leader in frozen food and operates over 900 stores across the country, together with a multiaward-winning online shopping service. It prides itself on being a convenient and friendly place to do the family’s weekly shop, as well as meet everyone’s daily

top-up shopping needs for fresh, chilled, frozen food and groceries The Fox Valley unit became available following the closure of Poundworld last year - creating an opportunity for Iceland to join the retail line up at the busy north Sheffield shopping centre.

Valentines Feature St. Valentine’s Day began as a celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus.

Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14, and added to later martyrologies.

A popular account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire.

According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell.

Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church.

In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”).

In Europe, Saint Valentine’s Keys are given to lovers “as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart”, as well as to children, in order to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine’s Malady).

Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

ances for Valentine’s Day IT’S nearly February, the shortest month of the year. That means Valentine’s Day is looming and people are thinking about love, and Casablanca , arguably the most timeless tale of heartbreak and adoration ever committed to screen.

Now more than 70 years old, the film centres on Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a bar owner in Morocco, and the action takes place amid the Nazi and Vichy occupation of North Africa. Of all the gin joints in all the world Rick’s lost love Isla Lund (Ingrid Bergman) shows up at his, on the run from the authorities with Victor Laszlo, leader of the Czech resistance.

Embittered, cynical, and constantly drunk, Rick is initially unsure about assisting the pair of fugitives, in turn losing Isla forever and putting his own life in danger. Eventually he does, and sacrifices are made to help them flee, meaning the loveable anti-hero is left alone again with little more than his sarcasm and Sam the pianist to keep him company.

So Casablanca isn’t an average romance, because the real love story is about a relationship that cannot exist. This got us thinking about a few other cinematic gems that strike a chord with the heartstrings, not because they offer sickly sweet tales, but as a result of their realistic portrayal of life’s complications in matters of the heart. After some deliberation we managed to draw up this list, so here are five features all discerning film buffs should consider come February 14.

Another Day in Paradise - Larry Clark, 1998 Four junkies hit the road, planning a series of robberies. It doesn’t sound romantic, but once

the film finishes you’ll be on the phone faster than you can say ‘better call my loved ones to tell them how much they mean to me’. Tragedy barely comes close.

Buffalo 66 - Vincent Gallo, 1998 Billy just got out of jail, but his parents think he’s been working abroad. They’re also under the impression he has a wife, and so he kidnaps a girl called Layla and forces her to visit the folks for dinner, pretending to be his spouse. Off beat in extremis, it’s also utterly charming.

Knocked Up - Judd Apatow, 2007 A one-night stand leaves TV presenter Alison pregnant with the child of stoner-bum Ben. Irrespective of their huge differences a haphazard relationship blossoms and, despite arguably being a little too long at 129 minutes, a witty and poignant tale of modern love unfolds.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Michel Gondry, 2004 Bizarre and absolutely incomparable, Gondry’s debut feature is the most accomplished on this list. Two people try and erase the painful memories of their once beautiful relationship via a new treatment, and wind up realising how precious such treasured moments actually are.

Annie Hall - Woody Allen, 1977 Little can be said about this groundbreaking outing that hasn’t been written before. Arguably the original major work of late 20th Century realist romance, the male-female relationship is explored in great detail, with the highs and lows laid bare for all to see, and empathise with.

Austin Watson, Rodger Holmes, Philip Adams and Steve Myatt rode a 60-mile loop on quiet roads to Snaith with a cafe stop at The Old Station Station House, Snaith.

New head greenkeeper appointed STOCKSBRIDGE and District Golf Club’s board of directors have been grappling with the difficult challenge of replacing Jamie Hobson, the head greenkeeper, who died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 46 in early December.

It has been a difficult time for Jamie’s family, friends and all at the club. But following a successful interview, Robert Grayson, one of the long serving team of greenkeepers, has been appointed to the position of senior greenkeeper with immediate effect.

In a message to the club’s playing members, chairman of the board of directors, Roy Myers, said: “We have the full commitment from Robert to take on this new role.

“Robert will be closely supported by Alf Pearson, the chair of the greens committee. As chair of the directors I ask that you all provide your support and encouragement to Robert.”

Winter finally got in the way of golf, with the weekend competitions abandoned because of snow and ice. The Gents Winter Cup will continue next weekend, weather permitting.

Before the cold snap set in, the Dragons section completed the seventh round of their mid-week Winter Cup. A. Peers won the round with a clear margin at 40 points in the stableford format.

N. Weaver came in second with 36 points and M. Siddall and J. Leaning shared third place with 35 points.

Thrillng wins for Church and War Memorial PENISTONE Church put on a fantastic show as they fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in the dying seconds of their game against Hemsworth Miners Welfare on Saturday.

Sam Jones put Hemsworth in front inside the first minute and Nash Connolly made it 2-0 just before the break.

Church’s fightback began on 55 minutes with Edward Cass putting through his own net. The experienced Andy Ring levelled the scores with a strike on 67 minutes and it was big Brett Lovell who snatched the win deep into stoppage time.

OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial made the short visit to Hillsborough College and came away with all three point in what was a devastating display of finishing in a 6-1 win over Handsworth Crown.

Matt Harrison got the ball rolling when Strachan Sampson played him through and even though Harrison had a lot to do he finished superbly.

In what was then an even contest, midway through the first half, Handsworth then equalised before out of nothing, Harrison again found the corner of the net with a fine strike to put the visitors 2-1 up at the break.

In the second half, Handsworth had chances to pull back and were made to pay when Chas Tunnard scored from and acute angle. Tunnard then added his second with a fantastic strike when he fired home from 20 yards.

Man of the match Sampson was soon in on the goal scoring when he struck a sublime volley from 30 yards followed by an own goal which sealed a emphatic victory.

This weekend Oughtibridge face local rivals Chapeltown in a local derby kick off 11am at the War Memorial Ground.

Juniors excel at indoor athletics meet THERE was a good turnout from Penistone’s junior section as they took part in the latest round of the indoor South Yorkshire track and field series at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

There were a good number of personal bests and club records on a very successful afternoon for the young athletes.

As the game settled Steels started to gain confidence in their new shape and play the ball around well.

A great move down the right saw Alex Wiles tripped as he run in on goal. A clear penalty that Rory Coleman enjoyed as he smashed the ball past the helpless Charlie Andrew.

Pickering replied with a spate of real pressure but Steels held firm and frustrated a shell shocked home outfit.

Just before half time McFadyen was asked a few questions and dealt with them like an experienced keeper, one save, high to his right, was a save Ed himself would have been proud to make.

Steels, with the bit between their teeth, were not going to be rolled over and showed a terrific resolve to see out an exhilarating first period.

In the second half, the home side came out of the traps fast and caused a few anxious moments for Steels forcing a sequence of corners, putting bodies on the line protected McFadyen with a real determination.

Swinburn and Litchfield were a threat on the break as the home side pushed men forward leaving holes at the back as they tried to find a way through a solid and resilient Steels.

The hard working Ruthven was unlucky from close range as Steels started to turn the tables and then a super right wing move saw the same player strike a first time ball that came across his body on the edge of the box. He struck it so well that Andrew was beaten to his right side as the ball nestled into the corner.

Two nil to Steels, then Swinburn hit the post after the restart as Steels fought hard to win the ball back, with a right footed drive across Andrew.

The home support were becoming worried and concerned now as Steels visibly grew in self belief and conviction.

Fielding was immense at the back as he took responsibility, marshalled the makeshift rear guard and seemed to win all the aerial battles with a man of the match performance.

Lemon and Litchfield could have, and should have, sealed it for the hard working away side in the last five minutes as they both spurned decent opportunities.

Huge credit goes to all the Steels boys to a man as they provided a monumental performance getting a well deserved three points, but also ensuring that McFadyen had a clean sheet to boast about once Hall returns to action.

The next home game is on Saturday January 26 as league leaders Morpeth Town visit.

STEELS managed to come away from their encounter with Pickering with three points and clean sheet, despite a disastrous start.

On only six minutes, Steels keeper Ed Hall needed to be stretchered off the pitch after punching an in-swinging corner at the front post, landing awkwardly.

Scans taken later in the day revealed a dislocated knee and perhaps ligament damage for the in-form keeper.

But manager Chris Hilton got a fantastic response from the reshuffled and fired up Steels side.

Centre half Liam McFadyen went in goal and immediately needed to face a penalty kick when Colemanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s challenge in the box was seen to be a foul by the referee on 10 minutes.
