New 30 year lease for leisure centre SHEFFIELD City Council plans to offer a new 30-year lease to the community trust 4SLC to continue running Stocksbridge Leisure Centre, which will increase opportunities for the trust to secure important funding. The current lease, which started in 2015 is for 25 years but if the decision to issue a new lease is made, then the trust will have an additional nine years, taking it to 2049, which will greatly improve their chances of attracting funding. The lease and running of the centre was transferred to 4SLC in 2014, following a temporary closure of the site, due to the council deciding that it was no longer feasible to run the facility. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “The Stocksbridge community have put their hearts and souls into this centre. Every penny raised and a lot of the manual work has been done by the people who use the facilities.

“Facilities, services and activities at the centre have greatly improved, which is testament to the hard work and determination of the community trust. Extending the lease reflects their success in running the centre and allows them a better chance to continue securing grant funding. “We know that physical activity has a huge impact on mental wellbeing and it’s clear to see that this facility is more than just a leisure centre, it’s the heart of the community. I’m so pleased that we can support 4SLC in continuing this excellent provision for the next three decades.”

As a community run leisure centre it’s essential that the trust can continue to access funding to enable them to keep improving and providing excellent services at a valuable cost for local people. An extension to the current lease gives the trust a better chance of accessing grant funding and allows them to confidently plan for the centre’s future. Andy Clarke, CEO at 4SLC said: “The lease extension provides us with longer-term continuity and improves our prospects of securing further capital funding to improve access and facilities for all the community.”

Community trust, 4SLC, was set up by local people to enable them to raise funds for, refurbish and take over management of the leisure centre. After many hours of hard work from the community, the centre was reopened in January 2014.

Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre provides many activities including swimming, gym, fitness classes, squash, bowling, badminton, football, kids clubs, birthday parties and more. To find out more visit http://www. stocksbridgeclc.co.uk/

Over the following two years 4SLC continued their hard work and fundraising to completely renew and reopen the two swimming pools at the centre.

A decision will be made at the council’s Cabinet meeting on Wednesday February 13.

OWLS STAR VISITS SCHOOL WITH ENVIRONMENTAL MESSAGE SHEFFIELD Wednesday star Fernando Forestieri visited Wharncliffe Side Primary School on Thursday morning for the club’s #PassOnPlastic campaign. The Owls Community Programme announced last week they would be going into local schools to educate youngsters on how plastic harms the environment, particularly the oceans, and they were joined by the Argentine striker. Fernando took part in a task to design a brand new water bottle with the children, before taking to the floor for a Q&A. Hallam FM were in attendance to speak with the 29-year-old on how he feels about going into the community to represent the Owls.

Forestieri said: “I think it is important that we do this. For me, I love to see the smiles on the children’s faces, it’s a very nice feeling. Before leaving, Fernando made sure to say hello to every other class in the school, with the youngsters taking full advantage of the chance for a photo and autograph. Nigel Hartley, the Year Six teacher who arranged the visit, said: “We’d like to thank Sheffield Wednesday and Fernando for coming into the school. “As a Sheffield Wednesday fan myself, I was very excited and the headteacher is a season ticket holder so I think he was more excited than anyone!

Three ram-raids in one night for north Sheffield THREE supermarkets were ramraided in the early hours of Monday morning in north Sheffield. South Yorkshire Police responded to a number of reports of a vehicle being used to smash through the fronts of the shops.

At 02:44, a report was received of a car ramming shutters at a petrol station on Burncross Road, this was then followed by similar reports at 03:54 at a Tesco in the Hillsborough area and finally at 04:20 at the Spar in Stocksbridge.

At each location, it was reported that a dark coloured vehicle was being used to cause damage to the premises, and that cash and cigarettes had been stolen. An investigation has been launched and a number of lines of enquiry are being pursued in relation to these offences.

A spokesperson for the police said: “We are appealing with anyone with information about these offences to get in touch via 101 quoting incident number SYP-20190211-0065.

NEVER MIND THE BAFTAS AND THE OSCARS... HERE’S FLYCHEESE STUDIO THE red carpet was rolled out once again as Flycheese Productions took over a screen at The Light Cinema for their third big screen showing of their films. It marked the completion of a number of projects that the students had been working on for months. Flycheese, based at the SOAR Works in Parson Cross, helps teach people with learning difficulties and disabilities how to make their own films with all the processes from filming and animating to editing. With around 50 students from all over the city and some from further afield, their studio is always a hive of activity with weird and wonderful films being created.

Flycheese is the brainchild of Paul Brown, and he had a lot of people to thank after a fantastic day at the cinema.

“Of course, we have to thank all the students for their amazing submissions and to the Carpet Roll End Centre who supplied the red carpet at short notice! The Trophy Store supplied the trophies at a great price and Pinders Sheffield produced top quality posters at short notice.

He told Look Local: “What a day! Everyone’s exhausted. Well done to Dan Woodhead for winning the best in show award. “Thank you to Light Cinema Sheffield for being amazing hosts, to Melvyn Ternan Sheffield Hallam University for putting so much effort into the day and supporting us. “I’d also like to thank Tony Downing, the deputy Lord Mayor from Sheffield City Council, for handing out the

Finally to the staff, team and volunteers who are incredible special thanks to Wallace Fennessy, the studio lead for top class graft day in and day out.” After the event, Paul and some of the animators were guests on BBC Radio Sheffield’s Toby Foster show.

Did you witness assault near Asda? POLICE are appealing for witnesses to the reported assault of a vulnerable man in the Buchanan Road area of Sheffield last month. At around 9.30pm on Thursday January 10, it is reported that a 26-year-old man and his mother

left the Chaucer Road Asda supermarket and were followed by a group of youths. The group reportedly shouted abusive language at the pair, following them to Buchanan Road.

The group are then understood to have assaulted the 26-year-old man, with one boy punching the man in the face causing serious injuries.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the group in the local area that evening, or who witnessed the assault.

The boy is believed to be around 15-years-old.

Please call 101 quoting crime number 14/14928/19. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

CHRISTIAN CENTRE LAUNCHES NEW SOCIAL CAFE PROJECT

ON Thursday February 7, the Stocksbridge Christian Centre on Cedar Road opened a social café called The Cornerstone Drop-in Café. The café will be open every Thursday morning from 9am to 11am to provide an opportunity for people to meet up for a cuppa and a chat, and to share in some joint games and activities. The manager, Rachael Horner, said: “The church is committed to being at the heart of the local community and we felt that a social café would be an excellent way to provide a social venue for young and old in our community.” The social café is a project to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Christian Centre in 2019.

Barnsley’s First Armed Forces Energy Action Day THE local armed forces community is being encouraged to attend a dropin event to find out how they can keep their homes warm and save money this winter, with a housing and energy stall to appear at Penistone Market. Barnsley's Armed Forces Energy Action Day will take place from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Friday February 15 inside Barnsley’s brand new market - at the bottom of the escalators. Local services in the borough dedicated to serving personnel, veterans and armed forces families will be on hand providing advice and support. The event is open to anyone in Barnsley, particularly those with a connection to the armed forces including those in work, on benefits or who are retired. Barnsley Council has organised the day alongside other members of Barnsley’s Armed Forces Community Covenant. The covenant, which was signed in 2012, is the council’s commitment to supporting the estimated one in 10 residents of Barnsley with a connection to the armed forces. The main focus of the event will be on highlighting the Forces for Warmth scheme for the armed forces community, which is provided by National Energy

Action. The project offers information on taking action on energy bills, improving heating at home and reducing damp and condensation. Barnsley Council’s Housing and Energy team, the Royal British Legion and armed forces charity SSAFA, will also be attending the event alongside a host of other local organisations. Maria Wardrobe, Director of Communications and External Relations at National Energy Action said: “Last winter the number of excess winter deaths was the highest since 1975. It is a tragedy that so many people die or suffer the health impacts of living in a cold home when they are largely preventable. “This is why NEA committed to providing funding to so many different organisations across the country. We anticipate that the funding will make it possible for Barnsley Council to provide much-needed support for residents within the local area.” The councils Housing and Energy team will also be in Penistone Market on Thursday February 14. Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “Throughout the winter, our Housing and Energy team have been working hard to promote the Warm Safe Homes Campaign. They have been

out and about around the borough offering help and advice on how to keep warm, stay well and save money. From encouraging residents to take advantage of boilers and insulation offered by Better Homes Barnsley and the new Barnsley Energy Tariff to providing information on other vital services available to help keep homes warm. “Our energy action day will close this campaign by focusing on the estimated one in 10 residents in Barnsley who have a connection with the armed forces. Making sure this community knows about the advice and support on offer for them to take control of their energy bills is especially important. “We don’t want anyone to feel they have to struggle during the cold weather when there is help available. I urge anyone living in a cold home or concerned about their energy bills to please get in touch.” For more information on upcoming events and tips and advice on keeping warm and well this winter visit: barnsley. gov.uk/help2heat or follow housingandenergybarnsley on Facebook. HOW TO WATCH THE MI AMIGO FLYPAST IT’S less than two weeks until Sheffield looks to the skies to see a unique flyover of US and Royal Air Force aircraft – to mark 75 years since the Mi Amigo disaster. The whole city is rallying behind Tony Foulds, who has been tending the Mi Amigo memorial for many years, with Buses for Sheffield and Stagecoach Supertram offering free travel for service personnel and veterans in honour of the occasion. Now Sheffield City Council is advising people to plan their journeys to Endcliffe Park carefully and in advance so they can arrive in time for the flypast on Friday February 22, which will be broadcast live by BBC Breakfast to an audience of millions. While final aircraft participation will be driven by weather and mission requirements, the US Airforce is anticipating a unique variety of aircraft from U.S. Air Force and Royal Air Force installations including RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall and RAF Coningsby. Due to airspace regulations, these aircraft will not fly in one combined formation together but will still put on a fantastic show of airpower in tribute to the fallen crew of the Mi Amigo. The flypast has been inspired by the dedication of Tony Foulds, who has tended the memorial in Endcliffe Park for many years.

Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is going to be a truly memorable day in Sheffield’s history and we are looking forward to welcoming our friends from the US to pay tribute to this remarkable crew who gave their lives so bravely during the Second World War. “Sheffield owes the Mi Amigo crew a huge debt of gratitude for their sacrifice 75 years ago. We have honoured their memory for all these years and this flypast will be a fitting tribute. It’s also a tribute to Tony who has tended the memorial for all these years. “We want as many people as possible to see the flypast and would urge them to take the following steps to ensure they have a day to remember on February 22.” SYPTE Director of Customer Services, Tim Taylor, said: “The flypast will be a fantastic tribute. Buses for Sheffield and Stagecoach Supertram are pleased to support the occasion by offering free public transport for service personnel. We’re encouraging all spectators to travel to Endcliffe Park in a sustainable way, by planning public transport, walking and cycling options in advance at travelsouthyorkshire.com”

Stagecoach and TM Travel bus services operating within the Sheffield boundary, and on Stagecoach Supertram services, between start of service and 12 noon on February 22 2019. You are advised not to bring wreaths to the Friday event but an area of the park will be able to take flowers if you choose to bring them on the day.

The flypast will also be broadcast on BBC Breakfast if you can’t make it into Sheffield on the day.

It is believed that the flypast will arrive in Sheffield from the southeast before arriving in Endcliffe Park, although this route may be subject to change. The city has a number of lofty vantage points which might provide a spectacu-

PUBLIC CONFIDENCE BOOST AFTER POLICE ACTION OFFICERS from South Yorkshire Police’s North East Neighbourhood Policing Team say they are ‘encouraged’ by comments made by the public, following six months of action focused on tackling criminal behaviour in Fox Hill. In August 2018, officers working in the area had noticed that there had been a significant drop in public confidence when it came to how they viewed police activity. Sergeant Scott Sarson explains: “There was a lack of trust between the public and what we were trying to achieve; historic issues of anti-social behaviour and crime meant that community confidence was very low. “I was determined to start the process of turning this around. We started by reviewing how we have worked in the past and carried out community surveys about what people’s main concerns were. Following this, we increased our presence in the area, upping the number of foot patrols and generally being more visible. “By talking more regularly to local people, we established that they were worried about anti-social behaviour, burglary and intimidation.”

In addition to increasing patrols, officers worked with the local authority to identify practical solutions to make residents feel safer. Working with Sheffield City Council, the Neighbourhood team introduced CCTV and secured funding for the installation of ‘boulders’ to prevent joy riding close to homes and gardens. The team also introduced a Pop in Police station where people could discuss concerns on a regular basis. PS Sarson says one of the main ways of building trust was improving how his officers communicated with local people: “We have taken the time to get to know residents and develop new ways of speaking to them and enabling them to share information with us more easily. Over the last six months we, as officers have become a trusted fixture in the lives of people in Fox Hill, where before there was just a void.” One local resident, who has lived in the area for almost 20 years, explains how things have changed. “In the last six months, Fox Hill feels safer and a better place to live. Last summer, we didn’t feel like there was any support from our local policing team, but since this concentrated activi-

ty began, the area has changed dramatically. “I used to be frightened at night, now I feel safe in my home again. Sergeant Sarson and his team have worked so hard to build up a relationship with local people; we know we can talk to them about anything. They have made practical changes; we see police officers in the area, CCTV cameras have been installed and these all increase confidence. It feels like the cloud over Fox Hill has been lifted.” The targeted action has had an impact on demand in the area, in August 2018, 35 incidents were reported in the Edge Well area of Fox Hill. In January 2019, this had reduced to just two incidents. Councillor Jim Steinke, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety said: “This drop in reported anti-social behaviour is fantastic.“It shows what a combination of people in Communities, the Council and the Police working together can achieve. The Council is committed to continue working in this partnership and that all its own services in the Fox hILL area are co-ordinated as much as possible.”

Bolsterstone Christmas Tree Bear Hunt We wish to thank all mums, dads and kids who enjoyed a truly magical Bolsterstone Christmas Tree Bear Hunt leading up to Christmas which also included a Teddy Bear Tea Party. All the children had a fun time finding the bears and especially shouting, “timber as their chosen tree was toppled by their dad. Afterwards the children were rewarded with a present, a decorated gingerbread Christmas tree, a Satsuma and chocolate.

Blackbird Wars Recent weather has brought cold and snow, which has frozen the ground solid and the water as well. So out I go every morning with a kettle full of hot water to thaw out the bird bath and to fill up the feeders with insect flavoured pellets. The birds wait until I’ve gone inside before they come. I watch them through my kitchen window. A pair of blue tits eyeing up the nest box which reared a large family last year are joined by a group of house sparrows. The scatter, suddenly, as a massed gang of starlings brandishing blade-like beaks in front of them descend from the sky like a scene from ‘The Birds’. Their lightning raid lasts for about five minutes before the black cloud of bird bodies ascends into the sky and disappears leaving a trail of destruction behind them.

The bird feeders, swinging violently pour out their contents all over the ground to be picked up by the blackbirds who’ve just arrived. Perfect timing! Here they come; three males and one female. Oh dear! This is not happy situation for three wouldbe daddy blackbirds, because my garden is tiny. There is only one suitable nesting place; a bushy conifer which raised a brood of blackbirds last year.

So the blackbirds wars begin. They last from the end of January right up to nesting time. The would-be daddy blackbirds with their chests puffed out chasing each other around the place, sometimes on the ground, sometimes in the pipfruit trees while the female hangs around in the background waiting to see who will eventually win and woo her. Blackbirds don’t only nest in trees though. A few years ago, my aunty Betty has a blackbird nest on top of a coiled up hosepipe four foot off the ground right next to her door. The eggs all hatched and the fledglings flew away – but there was nothing to frighten them. No cats, dogs or noisy aggressive people. Only the calm presence of gentle aunty Betty quietly going in and out of her house. The birds must have felt very safe and secure to have nested so near to her. But back to the present. The blackbird tournament is ongoing and I have a front row view of hostilities from my kitchen window. There’s just one of them there now in the apple tree; thinks he owns it standing there so bold with his head in the air, telling the world in a very loud voice. Not for long though! Here comes another - and another. Will he stand his ground? Will he? Blackbird Wars. Who will win the lady? I’d love to know but never will. Blackbirds all look the same to me.

Only one of the youngsters fell prey to a neighbour’s big black cat – or could it have been the ginger Tom? I picked up the baby feathers afterwards.

Julia Tomson.

Keeping a sunny smile whilst moving house in winter

MOVING house is one of life’s most stressful events, and unfortunately we don’t always get a choice of when we head off to our new home. When the lawyer calls to offer a completion date we are usually so relieved that we don’t check the weather forecast - or anything else for that matter. If we had everything our own way it would be glorious spring sunshine from sunrise to sunset on moving day. But the world doesn’t work like that. Move in winter and there’s a pretty good chance that the weather will be shocking. So what can you do? On the assumption you don’t have a hotline to Thor, or any other deity who might be able to help, you will be restricted to damage limitation. If you have a dog, for example, it would be great if he went round to a neighbour for the day. This is true during a move at any time but when it’s raining all day, muddy paws are

Keeping Sheffield on the Move Located on Garter Street in the centre of Sheffield, Clockwork Removals specialise in removals and storage on a local, national and international scale. Whether you are moving from Hillsborough to Penistone, Ecclesfield to London or Bradfield to Sydney, Clockwork understand that each move is as unique as you are.

even less welcome. Your moving company, of course, will be pretty good at handling a spot of rain or two. If the weather is looking bad they will set off a bit early so they can start on time and will come equipped with carpet protectors, and they are fairly hardy souls so a little drizzle isn’t going to stop them doing their job. They will, of course, be mostly concerned about not getting your things wet, especially if it’s a long distance move or if you are moving overseas. They will take every precaution to keep things dry but it would be helpful if you could clear obstructions off the drive so the van can get as near to the door as possible. Amazingly, however, and contrary to popular myth, it doesn’t often rain all day in the UK. It’s usually possible for the chaps to do the packing indoors and then load the van during the minutes when the deluge eases. But it’s not the rain you

should really worry about, according to leading UK firm Britannia Movers International. Sometimes in winter, despite the efforts of global warming, the snow falls. It often does so with little warning and, when it does, the UK infrastructure is inadequate. Everything stops. If that’s the day you chose to move house, you are probably staying put. Meanwhile, your buyer, who is the proud owner of a 4x4, wants to move into the house he now owns. But it’s not a problem if you think ahead. If you know there’s a risk of snow (any time between November and March) why not choose to move a day or two before completion day. If your new house isn’t ready, ask the moving company to hang on to everything for a while and enjoy a night in a posh hotel. Spoil yourself as a reward for negotiating the sale successfully. If the snow falls, you’ve got a day in hand and there’s no need to panic.

MOST of us are concerned about the effect that we are having on our planet and do our bit towards reducing our carbon footprints.

which is a pollutant; most of us will have noticed the chemical smell coming from a newly laid conventional carpet.

Many people now recycle regularly and have given up using plastic bags for shopping, opting instead for the much nicer re-usable bags.

This is not the case with those made from natural fibres, which produce no pollutants during either manufacture or daily use and are far healthier for your family to walk, sit or crawl on. If your preference is for wood flooring, there is now a wide range of boards made from sustainable woods such as bamboo and cork.

Our cars are checked annually for emissions and new models are far more efficient and environmentally cleaner. All good, basic steps in trying to make our world a better place to live in, but are we doing enough? Do we give as much thought to what damage we may inadvertently be doing to our health by our choice of furnishings and decor in our own homes? Unbeknown to most of us, we have for years been filling our homes with potentially toxic materials that are not only harmful in their manufacture and use to the planet, but also to ourselves when placed in our homes. To improve your home environment and enhance your quality of life, use green eco-friendly decor and furnishings. By choosing these readily available products you can greatly enhance the air quality in your home which is obviously good for your health. When re-decorating use paints that are chemical, heavy metal and volatile organic compound (VOC) free. There are plenty to choose from that are suitable for all painted surfaces; washable, durable and, as they are completely non-toxic, they immediately improve the air quality in your home. These natural paints are also very kind to the environment in general. For flooring, look for the carpets made from natural plant fibres or wool. Other carpets are produced using materials derived from petroleum

In your kitchen, go for countertops made from recycled materials such as crushed stones, glass or porcelain rather than ones made with conventional materials which need toxic adhesives and chemicals to fit them. Kitchen cabinets have generally been made from synthetic wood and the glues used in their construction emit PVC, VOCs and other toxic vapours. There are now, fortunately, a few glues which are free from formaldehyde. Cabinets made from bamboo are becoming popular because of their attractive finish and the sustainability of the bamboo. In the garden, for lighting a pathway or entrance porch, choose the now common solar lights which come in various designs and sizes and give off sufficient light for these outdoor areas. Solar powered water features are both attractive and energy saving. Not only are these products free to run, but there are no cables or cords lying around your garden or patio. With just a little research and thought we can all take a step further forward in protecting our family and our planet next time we re-decorate or do some DIY.

Sarah Walch and Helen Wright competed in the 28.4 mile Hardmoors Saltburn Trail Marathon.

CHURCH HIT EIGHT AS WAR MEMORIAL AND STEELS RESERVES LOSE PENISTONE CHURCH thrashed third from the bottom Harrogate Railway 8-0 in their game on Saturday, with Nathan Keightley netting a hattrick. There were warning signs early signs for Railway when Keightley and Sam Scrivens scored within a minute of each other with just seven minutes on the clock. And things got better for Church when Keightley bagged his second just five minutes later. Not to be outdone, Scrivens grabbed his second on 23 minutes and Keightley completed his treble before the half time whistle, with the game surely out of sight at 5-0. There was no let-up in the second half though, with Andy Ring, Jordan Coduri and Conor Glavin heaping on the misery for Harrogate. A good performance in front of a crowd of more than 200. STOCKSBRIDGE PARK STEELS reserves suffered only there second league defeat since September in their away game at Frecheville, losing 3-1. They started the game well and controlled the opening 20 minutes, taking the lead when Shepherd converted a great through ball from Webster. However, a lack of concentration five minutes later resulted in Crofts fouling in the box and giving away a penalty which was easily converted to allow Frecheville back into the game. With the score level at half time and playing up the slight slope, Steels knew they would have defend well in the second half. But another mistake on 55 minutes allowed the opposition to take the lead. Steels reacted well and created three good chances but poor finishing meant they couldn’t take advantage.

Call Rita to apply:

Frecheville’s third goal came in the last minute from another penalty so overall a disappointing afternoon for Steels who remain in fourth place.

Pheasant then took their chances with a great curling free kick into the corner of the net. As Oughtibridge pressed for an equaliser, the visitors hit the War Memorial on the break with only 10 minutes left. Livett was upended by Osbourne as he took it around the onrushing goal keeper. Livett dusted himself down and stroked the penalty into the corner. Oughtibridge got back into the game with a very well worked free kick. Broomhead got an easy tap-in from a clever bit of link up play between Black and Harrison. Oughtibridge were unable to capitalise on having the better of the possession and the better opportunities.

Stocksbridge, meanwhile, came into the tie lacking confidence after a 4-0 thumping to top of the table Morpeth Town and from the first blow of the whistle, Stocksbridge never seemed to move through the gears, losing out on many second balls, and giving away silly challenges that the referee made note of. The first real chance of the game fell to Alex Wiles, who was by far one of the best players on the field representing the Steels yellow and blue home strip. After great build up play from Scott Ruthven and Brody Litchfield, the midfielder sent it over the bar. However, Pontefract Collieries’ dominance soon shone through. The lead for Pontefract came in the fourth minute as Eli Hey nodded in after a mistake by Adam Kelsey in which he attempted to punch the ball away from immediate danger and fell to the goal poacher. The visitors were denied multiple times by Adam Kelsey, notably when he tipped over a long range shot by Pontefract striker Michael Dunn, forcing a corner. The hosts were then left exposed by a high cross which fell perfectly to Eli Hey who then slotted into the bottom left corner from close range to bag his brace.

A fourth was added in the 83rd minute as Vaughan Redford was left with acres of space to curl home and a late counter attack then added the gloss to the Pontefract win as Jack Greenhough cooly finessed in a fifth. Stocksbridge have conceded nine goals in two outings now, and with the relegation battle tightening up, Steels need to start chalking up some points if they want to avoid relegation to the NCEL Premier Division, all starting with another home outing next Saturday against Brighouse Town.

Ambitious Pegg takes first steps on the ladder

FOLLOWING a day long assessment day, attended by over 300 boys from across the county, ambitious Stocksbridge rugby junior Alex Pegg, 14, has been selected for the England Rugby Development Player Programme and attended his first skills and technique session last Monday. The talented youngster, who is a developing centre three quarter, hopes that this is a stepping stone in his bid to represent Yorkshire County and eventually fulfil his ambition to join the ranks of the professional game. He will be put through his paces each month by the Yorkshire Carnegie Academy coaching staff, who will monitor his future development. Stocksbridge Rugby Junior Club chairman Chris Ibbotson said: “We’re very pleased for Alex and his selection is well deserved. We have high hopes for him and this selection is a reflection on his hard work and the efforts of the junior coaching team at the club.” The club have provided Alex with his training kit and the photo with club skipper Ricky Rowett shows him receiving his shirt.

Stocksbridge leave it late

STOCKSBRIDGE left it late to snatch a victory over stubborn opponents Burley from Leeds, grinding out a 14-13 win at a wet and windy Coal Pit Lane at the weekend.

The home side were clearly dominant; however discipline was again an issue with too many unforced errors leading to penalties and a loss of good attacking position to frustrate the on-looking head coach Keenan.

The man of the match award went to the hard working Sam Whitaker, with Pete Newton’s defensive efforts also making him a stand out performer. Piggy supremo Keenan knows that his charges will need to improve if they are to maintain their grip on top spot in the Plate Competition, with their next fixture being a tricky and long trip away to Thirsk on Saturday.

Veteran centre Ben Senior was drafted in for a rare appearance and showed glimpses of his former abilities. The home side took the lead in the 10th minute after some sustained pressure. From an attacking scrum, skipper Ricky Rowett picked up and drove for the try line. As he was help up short, a muscular assist from scrum half Frith was enough to seal the score and Bowskill succeeded with the conversion.

“We ground out a win in difficult conditions against a stubborn opposition, said Keenan, “We have our destiny in our hands and we are determined to win some silverware for the club this season.

Some paper thin defending allowed the visitors to respond soon after with a try of their own and another penalty for offside was converted to leave the half time score 8-7 to Burley.

Stirring second string performance

A pretty even second half saw Stocksbridge defending stoically for 20 minutes or so, until a breakaway try gave Burley a six-point lead with time fast running out. There is a bit more steel in this Stocksbridge squad these days and a never say die response as Whitaker retrieved the restart to set up a pick and go phase that eventually prised the visitor’s defence open and Rowett was again on hand to cross the line under the sticks for Bowskill to seal the win with almost the final play of the entertaining game.

The team would like to thank their sponsors; MD Wright Machinery Removals Ltd, Mr Byron & Mrs Teresa Turner, S&M Pipeworks, Fox Catering and Bradfield Brewery.

DESPITE a number of late withdrawals, Stocksbridge Rugby Development XV gave a good account of themselves at the weekend, before falling just short away at Barnsley Rugby’s second string, eventually going down 17-5. Jordan Fletcher delivered a man of the match performance on his return to action after an absence, shared with another comeback kid, Jamie Christian on his return from injury. Luke Birch, on his return, lived up to his wrecking ball tag and Steve Hawksworth scored the try.
