THESE photos show the aftermath of a collision which left the Stocksbridge/Fox Valley section of the A616 Stocksbridge Bypass closed on the morning of Saturday March 9. Whilst both drivers received injuries, there was fortunately nothing too serious. However, the Saab was found to not be road legal and the driver is being investigated for drink or drug driving.

ARSON ATTACK ON CARS TWO cars were set on fire on Kenworthy Road on Friday March 1 and police are hunting an arsonist. It was at around 12.30am when Lauren Bradwell, 33, noticed that the two cars on her drive were ablaze. A person, caught on CCTV, had poured petrol over the cars and set them alight just inches from the house. As soon as Lauren noticed the flames, she tackled the blaze herself, along with her partner and two friends. Her 10-year-old son was sleeping in the bedroom directly above the cars. She told Look Local: “The fire brigade say that they don’t encourage people to fight fires themselves but if we hadn’t, the fire would have spread to the house. “My son was upstairs in bed and we were still awake with our friends downstairs. I saw an orange flash through the window and when I looked, the cars were well alight so we went out and poured water on them. “We’re on the priority list now, we have to move house because my son is terrified. He won’t go upstairs now. The cars, a Nissan X Trail and a Mitsubishi Evo, are both badly damaged. If anyone has any information, they can call 101, quoting crime reference numbers 14/39534 and 14/39541 of March 1 2019.

TOP AWARD FOR LOCAL REGATTA EMPLOYEE A MEMBER of the team at Fox Valley’s Regatta store has been awarded employee of the year for the entire company. Regatta, who specialise in outdoor wear such as waterproof coats and walking boots, have stores up and down the country. But it was a valued member of the team in the Stocksbridge branch who was singled out as the best of 2018. Sam Needle can often be seen offering a warm welcome to shoppers and his happy, friendly nature makes him a popular member of the team. But what really made Sam stand out this year is that he temporarily relocated from his part time position at Fox Valley to Manchester. Here, he oversaw the launch of a new store over the busy Christmas period, working more hours than usual while stopping in hotels. Andrew Myers, the manager of the Fox Valley store told Look Local: “It’s brilliant for Sam, it’s great for us as a store and it’s good for Fox Valley too. We’re really pleased for Sam.” As a reward, Sam received a certificate, a bottle of vintage champagne and will attend the gala dinner at the next national conference.

HOT WINTER SALE AT FLAMES
Flames of Sheffield have helped more than 5,300+ customers with their fire, fireplace, stove and central heating needs since they first opened their doors in 2005.
the installation work that is carried out, which gives their customers added piece of mind. “We truly are a local, independent and specialist fire, fireplace, stove and central heating company. We run specially selected promotional offers during the year on a wide range of products. If a customer requires anything from a high efficiency gas fire, a fire with a large amount of heat output or an electric fire with a unique flame picture, we are always able to meet their needs, plus we are able to offer long guarantees on many of these fires”, commented Senior Sales Advisor Sue Martin.
“Although the Autumn was a very busy time for us in terms of fires, fireplaces, stoves and central heating, as we start to come out of Winter and begin to enter Spring, it is a great time to look at having any home improvements completed, especially as we have many great offers available in our current Hot Winter Sale”, commented Senior Sales Advisor Helen Gowling. There are great household savings to be made by installing an ‘A’ rated energy efficient central heating boiler, with the average saving being of between £200-£400 per year, dependent on the new system fitted. A solid fuel stove is another great way to cut down on gas usage and, as long as the stove is DEFRA Approved and the correct fuel is used, then this again can be a great alternative to heat large areas of a home. “Many of the solid fuel stoves being used in Sheffield and the surrounding areas have almost certainly not been installed by a qualified HETAS engineer. This can lead to many problems and issues in terms of home insurance being invalidated, being incorrectly sealed and fumes leaking into a specific room(s) or building regulations visiting and insisting a stove is removed due to non-compliance. At Flames of Sheffield we offer a complete project managed service from start to finish for a customer and are happy to take responsibility for
installing and certificating a solid fuel stove or fire/fireplace. The current Solid Fuel Stove Package we have available has and is proving very popular with customers, as it includes a range of 4 stoves to choose from, a relevant flue liner with a 10 Year Anti-Corrosion Guarantee, a rear chamber and front hearth and standard installation, all for £2,395”, explained Director Lee Day.
Having firmly established themselves over the past 13+ years as a local destination retailer for anyone looking for a fire, fireplace, solid fuel stove or central heating boiler/system, they consistently offer customers a range of top quality products, value for money competitive pricing and a huge choice of bespoke ranges, whilst always maintaining their very highly rated standard of customer service.
Flames of Sheffield offer a different proposition to the majority of central heating installers as they operate from their Hillsborough Barracks bricks and mortar showroom and they are open 7 days a week. Flames are also an Accredited Installer for the entire Worcester-Bosch range of boilers and this means they can offer their customers a minimum 7 Year Parts & Labour Guarantee or even a 10 Year Guarantee on a specific range, subject to terms and conditions. They install Combi, Conventional and Conventional System Boilers, all of which are backed with a 1 Year Guarantee on the quality of

Three friends on target for hospice half marathon fundraising WHEN Harry Shaw celebrated his 18th birthday he decided the best gift of all would be not for him but for St Luke’s Hospice. Instead of the usual presents, he asked for cash donations that raised almost £200 for Sheffield’s only hospice, where his dad David had been a patient. Having started on fundraising, the trainee bricklayer is now in training for the Asda Foundation Sheffield Half Marathon, where he will be joined by brother Joe and friend Lewis Dawson, whose dad Terry was also a hospice patient. And even though the marathon does not take place until April 14, the trio have already raised an incredible £1,135! “St Luke’s is a charity that has been close to us all,” said Harry, who lives in Stocksbridge. “The staff were fantastic when my dad was a patient – they
would do anything to make him comfortable and they would do anything for us as a family too. “They supported our mums, Helen and Catherine, and all of us through a difficult time in our lives. “We haven’t really set ourselves a specific fundraising target but what we are saying is that we want to raise as much as we can because St Luke’s deserves everybody’s support. “We are grateful for every donation large or small and every penny helps. Just 23 per cent of funding is provided by the NHS, so St Luke’s depends on donations through fundraising to keep up the amazing work that they do.” Anybody wanting to support Harry, Joe and Lewis can make a donation by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/joseph-shaw4

MOREHALL Fly Fishing Club are welcoming new members with the fishing season beginning on Saturday March 23.
In addition, some larger fish are introduced, up to approximately six pounds, in order to provide some variation in the size of catches.
The club is a non-profit making voluntary association and was formed in April 2000 by a group of people who were interested in preserving Morehall Reservoir as a fly fishing water and also to promote the art of fly fishing.
The water also contains a number of indigenous brown trout which, if caught, must be returned immediately. The season runs from the middle of March to December 31.
The water is currently leased from Yorkshire Water by the club. The reservoir is situated in the picturesque Ewden Valley, eight miles north of Sheffield on the A6102 Manchester Road. The reservoir is stocked regularly during the season with rainbow trout averaging around two to three pounds.
There are a number of options available – you can become a member and then buy a day or season ticket or you can go with a friend who is already a member and just buy a day ticket. For more information, contact Morehall Fly Fishing Club using the details in the advert opposite.

Please assure me that somebody from your office has surveyed the site, because your current proposal would suggest that the is not the case.
Britain does not send £350m a week to Brussels. The actual net cost is more like £140m a week. In return, we gain all the benefits of membership, which includes being part of the single market. This is extremely important to our economy; for example, half of Britain’s food is imported, 80% of it from Europe. We also receive massive grants to areas of need, such as ours, to regenerate industry and business. These grants have been made necessary by years of neglect by Conservative governments, and made even worse by the policies of austerity since 2010.
Here are some inspiring women - the Mayor of Penistone and two members of the Fairtrade in Penistone committee - viewing some of the more than 100 schoolchildren’s posters of inspiring women at the very successful Fairtrade Chocolate Tea Party.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Community Initiative Award for leisure centre IN recognition of the outstanding achievement and the hard work of volunteers and staff, Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre has been awarded the Duke of York Community Initiative Award. It was only six years ago that the centre was closed by the local authority and under community management has become a thriving hub of the community, offering a wide range of health and wellbeing activities for all ages and abilities. This award quickly follows the news that the leisure centre’s lease has been renewed for a 30-year period to help it achieve further investment for improvements.
Andy Clarke, CEO of 4SLC Trust who manage the facility, said: “This is fantastic news and recognises the tremendous effort of everyone involved. “Part of the assessment included interviews with our customers and their positive comments about the service provided and the great community feel of the centre made a strong impression on the assessors.” The award ceremony, where HRH The Duke of York will make the presentations and meet the successful applicants, will be held at Catterick Camp, North Yorkshire, on Wednesday April 3.
NEW WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS FOR ECCLESFIELD
NEW £200,000 environmental weight restrictions will be introduced across several busy streets in Sheffield after overwhelming support from local residents. One of them is The Wheel in Ecclesfield, which will now be restricted to 7.5tonne lorries this year. There will be an area-wide ban including streets where there is cur-
rently no problem so that any displacement of HGVs would be on to other more suitable roads. An outline business case was approved in August 2018 to complete the Detailed Design of all four EWR’s with provision for their implementation once works costs are submitted in the final business case.
The proposed Environmental Weight Restrictions (EWRs) EWRs will address concerns regarding the impact that HGVs are having on the lives and wellbeing of local residents. The restrictions will reduce the likelihood of danger caused by the HGVs to other traffic using the affected roads. They will also prevent
damage to the roads and buildings near the roads caused by the HGVs and help other vehicles and pedestrians to use the roads better. Councillor Lewis Dagnall, cabinet member for environment and street scene at Sheffield City Council, said: “There is no doubt that excessive use of these roads by HGVS has been having a negative effect on
the communities and residents that live nearby. We have listened – and taken action – to address this. “These restrictions will improve quality of life and the environment for people in our city and stop lorries powering through built-up residential areas. It will also help the council and the city to fulfil its green and clean air ambitions.”

School pupil donates hair and fundraises for charity A STOCKSBRIDGE Junior School pupil has been growing her hair to donate to a charity that makes wigs for children who have lost their hair. Natalya Withers has just turned 10 and after seeing a child with leukaemia, she decided wanted to do something to help and so looked into fundraising. Her search of the internet brought her across a charity that makes wigs for hairless children and so that’s why she chose the Little Princess Trust. Natalya found out that if she grew her hair long enough to donate 12 inches of it to the charity that they would definitely use it for a wig, so she’s been growing it for over a year now in order to meet the required foot of hair. Natalya sent off for a fundraiser pack and has now booked her appointment to “cut the foot”. As well as donating her hair, Natalya has decided to raise as much money as she can for the same charity. The haircutting event will take place on Saturday March 23 at Yvonne’s hairdressers and all donations on the day are welcome. There will be photographs taken and put on the shops Facebook page. Stocksbridge Junior School and Yvonne’s hairdressers both have charity donation boxes in their reception for Natalya’s fundraising efforts, any donations can be left at either of these places. If anyone would prefer to sponsor Natalya rather than just donate, there is also a sponsor form in the school’s reception.
STORM SELF DEFENCE Invite You to Our OPEN DAY Storm is Coming to Stocksbridge! We Welcome All Ages and Abilities to come along and join this realistic up to date Self Defence programme.

AT a recent club meeting, the Rotary Club of Wortley handed over a cheque for £2,500 to Abbie Pervin from The Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. This money was 50% of the funds raised with the help of people from our local area and beyond who attended the Vintage and Classic Car Rally at Wortley Hall last July.

The other 50% was distributed to six organisations who do good work in the community, these being Penistone Church FC, British Heart Foundation, Woodhead Mountain Rescue, Autism Plus, Roundabout and Sheffield Young Carers.

Hawks windy in defeat at Dewsbury Dewsbury Celtic 44-14 Sheffield Hawks SHEFFIELD Hawks faced a windy, wet and muddy experience as Dewsbury Celtic handed them a heavy defeat in the second match of the season. Dewsbury ran in seven tries unopposed in the first half with the wind in their favour. Pride was salvaged in the second half as Hawks outscored the Celtics three tries to one however Dewsbury had put the game beyond doubt in the first 35 minutes. Hawks responded well in the second half.

bleeding lips and noses and, crucially, poor decision-making cost Hawks dear. With the wind in Hawks favour the team rallied and scored three excellent tries. Spencer Poppleton scored two from close range and Reuben Kateregga scored another pitch length stunner, leaving half the Celtic team in his wake as he scored under the posts. Joe Littlewood, Sam Eaden and Will Burns drove hard throughout the match and the tackling was fearsome in the middle of the pitch. Joseph Tipping and Harry Buxton ran good lines throughout and it is a measure of the character of the team that heads did not go down
and the work rate increased as the match went on. Driving Celtic back in the tackle created the mistakes that the Hawks could capitalise on. Everyone stepped up their efforts. Wind and conditions aside, Hawks didn’t fulfil their full attacking potential and clearly are capable of much more. It is to their credit that they toiled against a well-drilled and organised team and finished the match on the attack with heads held high. The Hawks will look forward to the return match when we are sure they will give a much better account of themselves.

BIRDWELL Wheelers’ racing season began last Saturday when Trevor Mayne took on the Matlock CC hilly 25 time trial around the Youlgreave/ Monyash area of the White Peak. He laboured in the stiff winds and after a lack of riding in the off-season he recorded 1-12-40 which is well down on his course best. Meanwhile John Woodhouse rode Mansfield CC’s Big Red Ride, a 100km reliability event taking in loops to Chesterfield and the Lower Trent.

Belper Town 4-1 Stocksbridge Park Steels Photo: Ian Revitt Report: Owen Harrison BELPER Town inflicted a heavy defeat on a Stocksbridge side who slipped into the relegation zone of the Evo-Stik East Division after the Steels were hammered by the Nailers 4-1 at The Silver X stadium. In the fourth minute, Stocksbridge pressure resulted in a goal for the league strugglers after Steels’ number nine Scott Ruthven fired in his shot from the right hand side of the box into the bottom left corner, beating the talented Belper Town goalkeeper Sebastian Malkowski. Just before the break, Alfred Thompson fired in a brilliant ball into the box which was nodded in by Belper skipper Danny
South. This was as a result of a counter attack after a Steels corner was cleared quickly and the hosts instantly went on the breakaway leading to Danny South striking his seventh goal of the season on the stroke of half time. In the second period, Craig Nelthorpe fired a beautiful cross into Derry Robson who nodded home into the bottom left corner to the cheers of the jubilant home supporters as he made it 2-1. Almost instantly after the goal, George Milner and Rory Coleman got into a bust up, eventually being separated by fellow team-mates and after referee Mark Tinsley consulted James McNee, he booked them both. Unfortunately for Rory Coleman, this
was his second booking of the game and he was sent for an early shower. Then the devastating blow came for the visiting Steels. Derry Robson fired in an inch perfect cross into the path of George Milner who nodded home into the bottom left corner to seal the game and bag his ninth goal of the season on his 21st birthday. A few minutes after and the embarrassment extended for Stocksbridge. Danny South bagged his second goal of the game after a cross from substitute Liam Owen. Stocksbridge are back on home soil in their next outing against another in form team Cleethorpes Town who defeated the Steels 6-2 in the reverse meeting earlier this campaign.
GOLF CLUB TAKE FUNDRAISING TOTAL TO £141,000 SINCE 1993 FRANK Milnes and Bev Sykes, the 2018 Captains of Stocksbridge Golf Club, presented cheques to their chosen charities - Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre and Weston Park - confirming the generosity of the area’s golfers.
Since 1993 the captains charities fund raising has amassed a seriously impressive £141,000. Nearly all the charities that have benefited have been local to Sheffield and Club President John Yeates described this as “Clear evidence of the community
spirit that exists within the golf club.” On the golf course the weather has been less kind to the golfers over the last week. The Dragons mid-week Winter Cup was won by T. Newton (14) with 39 points. M. Bradwell (17) was

second with 36 points and C. Dale (23) with 34 points. L. Wright (15) also scored 34 points but lost out on a lower back nine score. On Saturday, the 12th round of the Winter Cup saw a small filed take on the wind, rain, hail
and snow to finish their rounds. N. Elliott (12) won with a creditable 35 points. Club Captain S. Haigh (15) was second with 33 points and overall competition leader S. Cain (14) was third with 32 points.
STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels under 11s secured their second cup of the season on Sunday, beating Eckington Boys 5-0 in a league final. They were also unbeaten five games in their half of the league. All boys worked very hard for each other and played some very good football.
TIGERS FORGE DEAL WITH STEELERS SHEFFIELD Tigers speedway team have forged a deal with another of the city’s top sporting clubs, Sheffield Steelers - and boss Damien Bates says it’s great news for the Owlerton club. As the countdown to the new season continues, the Tigers and Steelers announce the partnership which will see ice hockey season ticket holders given cut-price admission to speedway meetings.

It was by no means a classic, with the weather making flowing rugby almost impossible, so credit must be given to both teams for producing an entertaining game, with the final result in some doubt right up until the final whistle. Thirsk tried hard to make some headway but a combination of strong home defence and their own lack of imagination proved their downfall.
Most of the action in the second half was in the visitors’ half as Stocksbridge sustained the pressure on the Thirsk line.
