DANCE SCHOOL CELEBRATES TROPHY HAUL A NORTH Sheffield dance school with pupils who have only taken part in competitions for the past 18 months is celebrating a 22 trophy haul after competing for the first time in the Epic East Coast Championships in Scarborough.

In a competition with over 350 contenders, eight pupils from the Erika Wilkinson Dance Academy (EWDA) came away with the trophies, which included three second places and three thirds. Erika Wilkinson who runs the school said:

“I am so proud of the girls’ achievements! We’ve only been competing for 18 months and I wasn’t sure how we would fare at a big prestigious festival like the East Coast Championship, but they were amazing. “We’re now looking forward to practicing harder and getting better and better so that we can bring more Championship trophies back to Sheffield. “With this weekend’s success and a brand new bigger dance studio opening at the end of March, 2019 is going to be fantastic for EWDA.”

TIGERS LEGEND TO RETURN IN MEMORY OF RON

Ricky Ashworth rides a tandem at Leicester on Sunday with 1993 World Champion and former Tigers rider Sam Ermolenko on the solo bike.

SHEFFIELD Tigers legend Ricky Ashworth, who was left with serious head injuries in a career ending crash just over five years ago, will be back on the Owlerton track this Sunday. Ashworth was a firm favourite with Tigers fans and still holds the track record at his former track. And although he can no longer race on a 500cc machine with no brakes, remarkably he has taken to riding a tandem and completed laps at the velodrome in Manchester which attracted national headlines.

He did the same at Leicester on Sunday to launch the charity meeting in aid of the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund. Now he will do four laps of Owlerton for the first time since his career ended – and he almost lost his life – at Sheffield’s 90th anniversary meeting on Sunday at 4pm. After the Leicester meeting Ashworth took to social media and wrote: “I had such a good day with my Dad, Step Mum and the Speedway family you guys are the best thank you. I wonder where next? The answer is Owlerton!”

Sheffield co-promoter Damien Bates said: “We are hoping to make a big day of it, it’s our 90th anniversary meeting so we want it to be a celebration and how apt that we have the track record holder here doing some laps after almost losing his life back in 2013. It’s a great story.” All seven Tigers riders will be in action along with a host of big names including double World Long Track Champion Erik Riss, French World Cup star David Bellego and GB international Steve Worrall.

IT is with great sorrow that Stocksbridge Park Steels FC have to report the sad news that long serving committee man Ron Sellers passed away peacefully in the Hallamshire Hospital on the evening of Monday March 11. Ron was 92 years old and still regularly attended home games to watch his beloved Steels.

He became a committee member in 1992 and has been a long standing vice president. Ron’s pride and joy was doing ground maintenance two mornings a week and also was on a turnstile on match days. A great man who will be sadly missed.
