Walkers ‘rack-up’ 1000 miles “What he did to me was horrible”

Stocksbridge man walks away from court with suspended sentence after admitting sexual activity with a child

Stephen Turner, 33, of Stocksbridge has been sentenced to six months, suspended for 18 months, for two counts of sexual activity with a child, during a hearing held at Sheffield Crown Court. Both offences were committed against the same 14-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

The run up to Easter saw Dearne Valley Walking Group celebrate its tenth birthday with its weeklong Dearne Valley Walking Festival 2019 to raise funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

The festival was an outstanding success with excellent attendances across all eight days which saw the attendees walk a combined distance of 1098 miles. More importantly the festival raised a magnificent total of £720 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

In a stomach churning victim personal statement read to the court, the girl described the impact Turner’s offending continues to have on her life.

“What Stephen did to me was horrible. I don’t think about it all the time, but it still comes into my head.

Turner was ordered to place himself on the sex offenders’ register from the date he entered his first guilty plea.

“I don’t like to think about it, it still upsets me,” said the girl.

Judge Graham Reeds QC also made Turner the subject of a threeyear sexual harm prevention order, the purpose of which is to try and prevent Turner from committing more sexual crimes by imposing a set of conditions which limit his use of the internet and his contact with children under the age of 16.

Turner’s offending came to light when the girl told a school teacher about what had happened to her. Turner, who has previously been convicted of an offence of battery committed against his wife, pleaded guilty to two offences of sexual activity with a child in earlier hearings.

Missing ring plea A widow is offering £500 for her ring she accidentally dropped in the car park of Chapeltown Quality Hotel Sheffield North, formerly the Staindrop Lodge on Sarurday, 20th April. Vanda 63 from Cambridge is desperate for it’s safe return, as it was the first ring bought for her by her late husband and therefore hugely sentimental. She has even spent two days sweeping the car park hoping to find it. Vanda feels someone probably picked it up for safe keeping intending to put it on the Lost and Found police register. Unfortunately, due to cuts, this service no longer exists and so she is doing everything in her power to spread the word, especially via social websites, for its safe return. Contact the hotel if you have any information.

SHOW HOME AT HIGH GREEN DEVELOPMENT SET TO OPEN ITS DOORS

The show home at an exciting new residential development in High Green is opening its doors for the first time on Saturday 4th May.

Eggcellent Easter The children at Royd Nursery Infant School and Deepcar St John’s Junior School had an “eggciting” day taking part in a range of Easter activities.

Orchard Croft is located off Wortley Road and comprises of fourteen contemporary detached and semi-detached family homes, proudly presented by Yorkshirebased developer Erris Homes.

Traditionally at Royd the children have participated in the ‘Best Decorated Egg’ and and ‘Easter Bonnet/Hat parade’ whilst at Deepcar the children have participated in an ‘Egg Rolling’ competition.

The spacious four bedroom semi-detached show home is arranged over three floors and comes complete with two family bathrooms and a fully-fitted designer kitchen. It has been expertly dressed throughout by well-known interior designer, Jeanette Holmes. Jeanette said: “Our objective whenever we go into a newly built property is to create a lifestyle and not simply a show home. At Orchard Croft we have adopted a very ‘on-trend’ industrial urban loft style feel with a striking colour palette of orange, grey, steel and black. “It will appeal to all age groups and the stylish and contemporary feel makes good use of the abundant space available. From the minute people walk through the door we want them to envisage their individual lifestyles and allow their creativity and imagination to style their own dream home.” Meanwhile, Jeanette will be on hand throughout the launch weekend to provide free interior design consultations to anyone who is in need of a little inspiration.

Miss Jones, Executive Headteacher of the Royd and Deepcar commented “This year we have decided to merge the schools traditions together so that all children from both schools got to decorate an egg, roll an egg and wear an “The show home also provides potential buyers Easter bonnet/hat”. HIGH STREET TRANSFORMATION An ambitious plan to transform Stockbridge’s High Street has been unveiled and work is underway to secure the funds to make this vision a reality.

The town’s traditional retail area of Manchester Road has suffered in recent years from poor building designs, a lack of investment, and inactive, often absent, landlords. In order to return the street to its former glories Labour councillors are putting their weight behind an ambitious bid to government for millions of pounds now available from the Future High Streets programme. Labour is hoping that and they have a ready-made plan to deliver the change needed.

and shop fronts, new parking bays and green spaces as well as high quality flats above the premises.

Dransfield Properties, the company behind the successful Fox Valley development has worked with the council on the bid, with the company having a track record of partnership working in other parts of the country to deliver town centre transformation. Amanda Holmes of Dransfield Properties, , said: “We are delighted to be working with local members and Sheffield City Council’s officers on a bid to transform Manchester Road in Stocksbridge.”

Mayor of Stocksbridge Julie Grocutt has worked alongside Sheffield’s Labour councillors in bidding for the multi-million pound investment deal and commented: “As a local resident for many years I can remember when our High Street had so much more going for it... I am proud of the fact that Stockbridge has a strong local identity. However, the heart of the town is in urgent need of investment to reshape it, to create new uses and activity for a sustainable future.”

Iceland opens Police given extra £100 million to fight knife crime brand new Fox

Police forces across the country are being given an extra £100 million to tackle serious violence. South Yorkshire Police will receive £2m of this to carry out surge activities.

Surge operations will target those areas of South Yorkshire where there have been incidents of knife crime in public places. Most of the money for a surge in operations is going to just 7 forces. The others are the Metropolitan Police (London), West Midlands, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, West Yorkshire and South Wales. The seven forces account for 60% of hospital admissions for assault by a sharp object over the last three years. Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner said: “Knife crime is a national problem, especially in the urban areas. I believe South Yorkshire Police, together with partners, are already getting on top of it in the county. We do not see anything like the situation that Londoners have to face. We must especially ensure that young people are not drawn into gangs and that requires a big community effort by police, schools, the local authorities, community groups and parents.”

Churches Together in Stocksbridge and Deepcar District ensured that the Easter Cross once again shone out across the valley this year. Liberty Steel, thanks to Messrs Mick Hood and Dave Straw have once again kindly supplied the power to light the Cross for the community to appreciate. Father and son John and Wayne Hirst (St. Ann’s Church) ensured

The new store boasts 6,975 sq. ft. unit between Home Bargains and Aldi at the north Sheffield shopping centre. More than 30 new jobs have been created. Iceland is recognised as the leader in frozen food with over 900 stores in the UK. Exciting plans proposed to develop green space in the heart of Stocksbridge Stocksbridge residents have the chance to show their support for an exciting new project which will see improvements to a green space in the heart of the town, with a public vote taking place on Wednesday 8th May. Town centre based charity, the Steel Valley Project, has unveiled a proposal to install new seating, a natural play area, planting, way-marking and footpath improvements to the existing Edward Street site located near to the Co-op. The proposals include an amphitheatre seating area, giving extensive views across the valley and a relaxing space for people to stop for a break. A 2018 survey asked Stocksbridge and Deepcar residents about their use of local parks and countryside with the results showing that an overwhelming 86% of people visit them for walking and 59% wanting improved play facilities. Upgraded paths, more seating and enhanced habitats for wildlife also ranked highly. The plans for Edward Street have incorporated these elements in order to deliver something which residents really want. The work would be undertaken by the charity and their team of local volunteers alongside specialist contrac-

tors, enabling the community to be directly involved in the project. Steel Valley Project approached Enzygo, a multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy located in Stocksbridge, who believe they should positively contribute to the areas where they are based. Enzygo jumped at the opportunity to support the funding application for the Edward Street Greenspace utilising their in-house landscape design team. Graham Bailey, Associate Director Landscape for Enzygo said: “If successful we look forward to developing and delivering our design concept with the local community and SVP.” The total cost of the project is £27.5k, of which £25k has been applied for through the Community Infrastructure Levy, which helps local authorities deliver facilities and services to support new homes and businesses in the area. The remaining funding would then come from other external funding. To ensure that the plans can go ahead, members of the public will need to vote for the Steel Valley Project in a public meeting taking place on Wednesday 8th May 2018, 6.30pm at The Venue on Manchester Road. There are a number of different applicants for the funding, each of whom will give

a 5 minute presentation on their project. This will be followed by a period of time for people to browse displays and ask questions, before finally casting their vote. Tom Newman, Project Manager for the Steel Valley Project, said: “This is an exciting project which will

Fun run in memory of tragic young brothers

The team at the Sheffield property firm Dransfield Properties are supporting an annual fun run due to take place in June in memory of Penistone brothers Jack and Paul Sykes. The company’s charitable foundation is supporting the 2.5km event which will take place in Penistone on June 8th, by donating the medals which will be presented to all those taking part. The run was founded four years ago by a group of organisers including Emma Stead, who works as an accountant for the DPL owned Sanderson’s Department Store at Fox Valley. This year the run will take place on the same weekend as Penistone Gala for the first time and organisers are hoping to attract a good number of runners. Every single penny raised in the fun run will go towards Heads Together (Barnsley), the charity set up in memory of Jack and Paul who were

just 12 and nine when they died in a house fire started by their father in 2014.

Claire Throssell added: “I am really touched at the support from businesses like Dransfield Properties and from the

Crime falls in South Yorkshire

The crime statistics for 2018 released last week show a mixed picture both nationally and in South Yorkshire.

Jack and Paul’s Mum Claire Throssell is attending the fun run event and will be presenting the medals to all the finishers. Emma Stead said: “The fun run has grown every year since our first fun run in 2016 and we are delighted to have the support of the Dransfield Foundation for this year’s event. The medals are a lovely keepsake for all our runners and we’re hoping for a good number of participants to help us raise as much money as possible for the charity.”

We encourage people to come along to the meeting, look at the plans and have a chat with us to find out more. Public support and votes are needed to

Crimes that have decreased in South Yorkshire include: sexual offences (-5%), thefts (-11%), criminal damage and arson (-12%). Most significantly, knife crime and sharp instrument offences fell by 3%. schools to ensure young people understand the risks.

Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner said: “Any increase in crime is unwelcome news. However, South Yorkshire does seem to be bucking some of the national trends with significant falls in some crimes.

“Drug offences rose by 16% – more than the regional increase of 14%, but this is a crime that requires the proactive approach from the police in order to find and prosecute the perpetrators.

“I am particularly pleased to see that knife crimes fell albeit slightly by 3%. This is not the public perception because we tend to be over-influenced by the high profile reporting of a few incidents. “We need to turn these latest figures for knife crimes into a trend and that will only happen if we can continue to get upstream of crime. “We need to work with partners to get people off drugs and we need to work with

“The funding we are going to receive from the government will also enable the police to disrupt the gangs, especially those involved in drugs. “But what we also need to notice and give more scrutiny to are the significant rises both locally and nationally in forms of psychological violence – stalking, harassment, domestic abuse and offences on social media. Increasingly the police are having to keep us safe on the internet as well as the streets.”

The show on May 11th at 2-30pm will reflect the bright and breezy style of popular music that has commonly become known as the “Blackpool Style” and include old and new favourites from stage , screen and radio. Music that brings memories flooding back.

High Green litter pickers triumph again over the high amounts of litter that is regularly being left on Greaves Lane in High Green. This is a combination of litter from fast-food outlets eating pedestrians and parked vehicles as well as flytipping. It is a constant battle, but the team in High Green are showing that High Greeners will not accept the disregard for this pretty Lane.

Advanced tickets are available online at the Paramount website, in person at the Paramount box office, by telephone on 01226 767532 and 07944 566972 or pay on the door.

Pictured(l to r): Phil Dimelow, Ian Holmes, Ian Cavanagh, and Nick Dodsworth receiving the ir certificates.

The Penistone Cinema Organ Trust also hold afternoon tea dances every Wednesday at the Astoria Centre, Barugh Green, Barnsley, from 1 to 4 pm with dancing to the live music of the Compton Cinema Organ.

A special recognition award has been awarded to Stocksbridge Park Steels FC for the work they have done in the community which ultimately saved a young mans life.

Every Thursday at the Astoria Centre, Barugh Green, Barnsley, at 1pm the Trust hold a concert of popular music played on the Compton organ with Kevin Grunill or guest organist playing the Compton organ. Further details on 07944 566972.

The junior club have continued efforts to ensure the safety of not only players, but the wider community. Cheryl Dodsworth has worked tirelessly collecting donations, with Fox Valley and Wortley Rotary Club making significant donations. The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has made a real difference in promoting the importance of The Defibrillators and training for club officials and volunteers continues

Letter for Look Local

I read with interest your article about the nineteen year old trying to become the youngest Councillor in parish history. I remember Mark Denton who was elected as a parish councillor in the nineteen nineties. Unfortunately when he went to university he found it difficult to attend and was forced off the council. I would also like to point out that Paul Swift James’s father was co opted onto the Parish saying he was a Lib Dem. Just a few months later he is standing as a so called Independent councillor for EPIC. I was elected in 2015 as a Labour Party Parish Councillor. I wrote in my leaflet ‘I believe Parish Councils should be non-political, just working together for every ones benefit.’ I have kept to that always voting as I believe to be the best for the local community. The last eighteen months has been difficult as four excellent clerks have resigned from the Council because of the disruptive, bullying behaviour of the ex UKIP now Independent councillors and their followers. It’s one thing criticising fellow councillors but criticising Council staff who are unable to argue back is not fair. The Hoey review of the EPC was requested by Labour Councillors because of the poor behaviour of these Independent Councillors following the resignation of the third clerk. Once the Hoey report was presented it was a Labour Councillor that proposed adopting and implementing fully the Hoey recommendations seconded by a Lib Dem councillor. The Independents wanted to change the wording of many recommendations to suit themselves. The long serving Finance Officer who was hoping that Hoey would help improve the unpleasant atmosphere of meetings was reduced to tears by the inability of the ‘Independents’ to acknowledge that their own behaviour might be at fault. She left a job she loved because of this.

The last excellent Clerk was intent on staying but after lots of verbal and email abuse she was signed off with stress and now has left.

city council and multiple candidates at parish council.

I am not standing for re-election as I was recently diagnosed with stage four cancer, which consists of an inoperable tumour. This is my third cancer so sadly I believe it would be foolish to sign up for another four years. I do hope that the newly elected councillors work co-operatively with mutual respect so that our Parish can gain from a well-run Parish Council again. Alison Gethin David Pepper

I would just like to offer my thoughts on the departure of David Pepper from Ecclesfield Parish Council. In his typical unassuming way, he says “I hope I made a difference, in some small way (Look Local 18th April). Yes, David, you did; you were a pillar of the community, devoting endless hours on a voluntary basis supporting many causes throughout the parish. It was your financial skills that ensured Chapeltown Baths flourished, and when the inevitable closure came, that the new Thorncliffe Leisure Centre benefitted from the proceeds of the sale of the baths site. This enabled all members of the community to access the facilities through affordable charging, and as a result, the leisure centre has become a resounding success. David is one of the reasons why I got involved in local politics. His name is synonymous with Ecclesfield Parish Council. He will be sorely missed. Cllr Mike Levery GO VOTE

Elections May 2nd, 7am to 10pm. All you have to do is turn up and give your name and address. You can vote for one candidate at

Art exhibition

Freedom to vote is not and was not free to get, it was paid for in blood sweat and tears. It’s also paid for in cash, look at your recent council tax bill. Ecclesfield parish council elections cost between £25-£30,000. Go vote. It does matter, it does make a difference. Cllr David Ogle Participatory budget

On Wednesday 8th May we hope that everyone in the Stocksbridge area will be involved in the Participatory Budgeting (PB) Vote at The Venue. Doors open at 6pm, with the ten groups bidding for the money starting to speak at 6.30. Each group will have no more that 5 minutes to put its case. When all ten groups have spoken, you will have the opportunity to ask the individual groups questions before submitting your voting slip in which you rank each bid. This process gives you the choice of who receives the money. Every member of the public, eight years old and over, who lives, works or is a member of a local group is eligible to vote. Don’t think that because you are not supporting a particular bid this event is not for you- it most certainly is! The available money is heavily over-subscribed. Details of the bids are available on our Town Council’s web site: stocksbridgecouncil.co.uk. There is also a feature in this edition of Look Local.Â

Readers may remember that he Fairtrade Group were pleased to publish a poem by a 95 year old lady in recognition of Fairtrade Fortnight. Now at thhe other end of the age range, we have a poem written by Neeve Maloney age 10. The poem is on the theme of cocoa production and is to be entered into a nationwide competition. Fairtrade Stocksbridge

These cocoa beans grow on a tree They are really yummy for me Farmers grow them day and night They make sure they are perfectly right They work hard everyday To make sure they are never grey They hardly earn any money So they may not be able to their tummy Everyday the farmer comes and works Sadly they don’t have many perks The chocolate you eat tastes very sweet It really is a taste that can’t beat Fairtrade chocolate is very nice Try it once or maybe twice Co-op is the best place Its like it’s a fairtade base Neeve Maloney, 10 Deepcar St. Ann’s Junior School FLY TIPPING

There, half buried beneath the bags, was a bed headboard....a toddlers metal walker with food tray still attatched, several toys, also a huge piece of carpet, oil cans.. I could go on..... Fly-Tipping... its an eyesore, its disgusting, and its irresponsible.

A small collection of paintings adorn the walls of Look Local’s reception on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge (opposite Stocksbridge Library) to coincide with Sheffield Environment weeks. The paintings by local artists will be displayed until Thursday 30th May between 9am – 4 pm weekdays except Wednesday 9am -12 noon, closed weekends. Feel free to pop along and view.

You know who you are... the sneak, who put it there or the people that have added their junk to it.... Please have a thought for others, the walkers, the wildlife and our precious green belt land.

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Music, bikes The annual Bradfield Tractor Rally - Sunday 7 July

Starting from Storrs Green Farm in Dungworth and finishing at the Nags Head in Loxley, is expecting to attract over 100 tractors and will include pit stops and viewing points for spectators. Yorkshire Air Ambulance has been chosen as the benefactor for this year’s charity rally, a facility that has been life saving more than once in our rural surroundings. The Rally is being held in memory of two much loved characters within the farming industry, Wilfred Woods and Charlie Halliday who sadly both lost their lives in 2018. Further updates will

be provided as they become available, but for now save the date and pray for sunshine.

Cup stars and World Champions, not to mention one of the largest number of female racers in the UK!

The Steel City Down Hill Saturday 4 May

Peaty’s Trail Ale from Bradfield Brewery was once again on the guest list and of course they obliged! The Steel City Downhill simply wouldn’t be the same without some Peaty’s Trail Ale in the mix!

Steve Peat and friends are happy to announce this year’s Steel City DH, “The Biggest Little Race in the world” is back on the 4th May 2019 and promises to be bigger and better than ever. A perfectly formed rough diamond on Sheffield’s sporting calendar that has been running every spring since 2011, the race has always been that little bit different to your average mountain bike event with 11 year old rippers racing against World

A great day out for all the family with some great racing to spectate, trade stands, street food and a Bradfield Brewery Bar. The race takes place in Grenoside Woods, for further details please visit the website https://www.steelcitydh.com/

LIGHT UP THE OUTDOORS THIS Now in its eighth year, National Gardening Week (Monday, 29th April – Sunday, 5th May) is the nation’s biggest celebration of gardening, and raises awareness of the positive impact that gardening in the great outdoors can have on the lives of everyone in the UK.

Taylor Made Gardens & Landscaping Ltd Last year, thousands of people shared their ‘passion for plants’ across various events and this year’s National Gardening Week is set to be no different – with participants encouraged to get involved in various ways, by creating community gardens, hosting plants sales and opening up their gardens to the public.

www.taylor-made-gardens.com

Naturally, homeowners opting to open up their gardens and green spaces to the public want their space to be looking its absolute best – with seasonal plants in abundance, and the external landscaping in prime condition. But for those looking for the ideal time to get green fingered and update their gardens, National Gardening Week is perfect – with plenty of guidance and advice available, and with summer just around the corner.

One way to ensure your garden stands out from the crowd is using creative lighting, which can

turn even the simplest garden setting into a place of beauty as dusk creeps in. No longer restricted to a simple porch lantern or glaring security lights, today’s exterior lighting has evolved to become more creative and inspirational than ever before. Here, Darren Staniforth, technical expert at leading electrical regulatory body, NICEIC shares his top tips for garden lighting ahead of National Gardening Week: When it comes to garden lighting, concentrate on illuminating the most attractive features, such as a stand-out plant or water feature. Use navigational lighting to illuminate paths and steps. Up-lighting works well at the far end of the garden when shining on to a fence to make the space appear larger.

NATIONAL GARDENING WEEK

Down-lighting should be used to highlight features such as a tree, or placed above a table for more light when dining al-fresco. Effects such as shadowing work well when placing a light in front of a sculptural plant or object to create a dramatic look.

As with any type of electrical work in the home, however, when lighting up an outside area it’s important to ensure it is installed professionally and safely. Darren’s safety advice includes: All outside sockets must be RCD protected for safety. An RCD (residual current device) works by switching off the flow of electricity when a cable or flex is cut. Cables underground must be buried at a sufficient depth to avoid damage from garden tools. This will require the electrician to dig a trench in the garden. All cabling should be suitable for installation outside. Your registered electrician can advise you on the best options. Decorative lights plugged into an outdoor socket should be taken inside after use, unless they are clearly labelled as waterproof.

New cordless mower

They are not designed to stay out all year round.

Always buy outdoor lighting equipment from a reputable retailer and ensure anything purchased is waterproof – especially if to be used for water features.

The new upgraded Cordless Lawnmower 2.0 has a charge time of just 1 hour and a 48V Lithiumion battery to power through your garden for up to 40 minutes, making light work of cutting the lawn.

Appropriate light fittings will always carry an IP rating, which indicates how well it stands up to external conditions. It’s also worth looking out for a BEAB Approved Mark and the European Community (CE) safety symbol too. Remember, any outdoor lighting installations that have been incorrectly selected, installed or damaged may create a risk of electric shock, resulting in serious injury or even death. If in doubt, it is always advisable to seek the help of a professional qualified electrician, such as those registered with the NICEIC, who will be able to make sure all work is done safety and to required standards.

The 3-step set up is intuitive and easy - just insert the battery, push the activation button and pull the handle lever. The automatic controls adjust the speed to tackle thicker, longer grass, whilst the re-engineered blade is designed for power and efficiency. You have complete control over the cutting height, with a choice of 10mm increments between 30mm and 80mm which means you can get the perfect lawn for a quick tidy up or a more thorough mow.

You can search for a registered electrician in your area by visiting www.niceic.com. For more information on National Gardening Week, visit www.rhs.org/ uk/get-involved/national-gardening-week.

The large wheels enable you to cut the grass effortlessly, moving freely around your garden - not just in straight lines - and with no petrol to buy and store, no pull cord to snap or get stuck and no trailing cable, this lawn-

mower offers a low maintenance gardening solution. The grass bin has an upgraded capacity of 50 litres, with a handy indicator flap that lets you know when the bin needs emptying. Once you’ve finished mowing the lawn, simply charge the removable battery and fold the mower down. The lightweight frame and carry handle make it easy to transport to the shed for clutter free storage. For added safety, the upgraded mower features an operational safety key which must be set to the ‘On’ position for the mower to start. To turn it off, set to the ‘Off ’ position for safe storage. “A Perfect performance and result to finish off a nearly perfect season. To dominate third placed Yorkshire Amateur, a very good footballing side for ninety minutes of the game is exceptional, it shows the character, attitude and culture we’ve created in the changing room with the players.” Church manager Ian Richards commented after the game. He continued... “It’s out of our hands, I don’t think we’ll go up even though AFC Mansfield have dropped down but I hope I’m proved wrong on that and we do. If not we re-group, my job is to keep everyone at this football club which will be very difficult this summer and try and go one better and win it.

In the short term we’re going to have a few week’s off, we’re going as a squad on holiday abroad as an end of season do, eighteen of a possible twenty are going and again it shows the togetherness of the lads who are going there and we’ll have a real good celebration of what’s been an exceptional season. Then I’ll start planning for next season and see if we can go one better but today thank you for everyone’s support, thank you for everyone’s commitment to the club whatever role you play it is much appreciated and without that we would never achieve what we achieve. Long may it continue and I wish everyone a restful relaxing summer and we’ll see you in the new season.”

Gary remembered at London Marathon

Several Penistone runners took on the London Marathon and were spurred on by the memory of Gary Dean who had completed 18 London Marathons prior to his death last year. A few of the runners posed after the race with Gary’s Penistone vest which he had worn when competing. Gary would have been proud of the fine performances that the runners achieved on Sunday. Pick of the runners was over70 veteran Bill Phillips who smashed the club record for his age category in a time of 3-42-46 beating the previous mark by 20 minutes. First back for Penistone was the impressive Gareth Cooke who finished in a time of 2-31-50. First lady back for Penistone was Hannah Butcher in 3-49-55. Results for Penistone runners at the London Marathon: 121, Gareth Cooke 2-31-50; 9661, Bill Phillips 3-42-46; 11514, Hannah Butcher 3-4955; 17188, Ian Walker 4-09-21; 17876, Luke McGuinness 4-12-08; 20073, Seuranie Johnstone 4-20-34; 28798, Peter Knight 4-53-52.

A few Penistone runners headed out to the Yorkshire Dales to take on the classic three peaks fell race. The race starts in Horton in Ribblesdale and takes in the summits of Pen-yghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. Conditions were

challenging but all Penistone runners managed to complete the 24 mile route inside 5 hours. Damian Kilpin was first back for the club breaking the 4 hour barrier in 3-55-59. Next in and also sneaking under the 4 hour barrier was Jon Waller in 3-59-52. In the men’s team event Penistone finished in 27th place out of 52 teams with Tom Randall and Robin Clough completing the team alongside Damian and Jon. In the men’s over40 team event Penistone placed 9th out of a field of 18 with Damian Kilpin, Tom Randall and Robin Clough being the three to count. Stocksbridge Golf Club Update: Stocksbridge Bandits start their summer season With continuing good weather at the start of the week and after the glorious Easter Weekend, the Stocksbridge Bandits Society started its summer season of competitions. In the first match 29 Bandits took part in the stableford format with Head Greenkeeper, bert Grayson (27) finding time “off duty” to win the first round with 42 points. There were several jibes in the clubhouse about his handicap, but after this victory he has been dropped 3 shots. Brian Dobb (17) was second with 40 points and Julian Wilkinson (27) third with 37 points. The Gents midweek stableford was won by C Dale (3) with

an impressive 39 points. Chris played to scratch with his winning score, with S Sharman (8) in second place with 35 points. N Eggenton (9) was third with 32 points. Saturdays Aitchison pairs qualifier was badly affected by the effects of Storm Hannah, but Sunday was a lot better. The Spring Mixed Fours competition saw a good turn-out for the mixed doubles format. Helen Moffatt and Ian Sedgwick won with a net 68. The Sedgwick family had a good day with mother and son combination, Alison and Matthew, coming in second place with a net 71.

Stocksbridge survive Coleman spot-kick earns last day point the weather to take Civil Service by storm Stocksbridge Park Steels ended the 2018/19 campaign on a high after battling hard in extremely difficult conditions at Bracken Moor to earn a well deserved point against in form outfit Ossett United.

points tallied up out of a possible 15 in recent outings, Stocksbridge were never going to be walked over by an extremely promising and talented Ossett United side who were using today’s test at the Look Local Stadium to consolidate their position in the end of season play offs whilst trying to gain momentum ahead of their play off semi final against either Pontefract Collieries or Brighouse Town which would both provide difficult opposition for the West Yorkshire high fliers.

Stocksbridge 118-7 (Jack Newton 29, Joe Hibbert 29, Liam Grayson 28) Sheffield Civil Service 49 all out (Joe Hibbert 5-7) After last weeks season opener in the beaming sunshine, this weekend’s conditions couldn’t have been more opposite as the 1st XI made the short journey to Ecclesfield to take on Sheffield Civil Service. With a very suspect forecast, play looked in doubt from the off. Due to the forecast both umpires suggested a shortened game, as this would give more chance of completing a game and both captains agreed to a 25 over game. The home side won what could have been a crucial toss and elected to put Stocksbridge in to bat. The Stocksbridge innings couldn’t have started much worse as they were reduced to 8-3 inside 5 overs and they seemed in huge trouble. Liam Grayson came to the crease to join opener Jack Newton and the pair began to rebuild the innings however just as the pair looked comfortable, Newton was bowled for a well made 29. This now left Stocksbridge at 42-4 needed a strong partnership in order to achieve a reasonable total. Joe Hibbert joined Grayson and the pair added to last weeks excellent partnership to put on 58 for the next wicket. Grayson and Hibbert batted very well and determinedly in very difficult conditions before both being removed for 28 and 29 respectively. A few late runs from Steve Perry and Jake Vickers in the final overs, showing the sides batting depth, got the total up to 118-7 from 25 overs setting Civil Service a total of 119 to win. At the halfway point both sides fancied there chances. With Civil Service’s dangerous top order, Stocksbridge knew that early wickets would be important. The innings got off to a perfect start when opening bowler Joe Hibbert removed the opening batter for 0 after just four balls. Hibbert wasn’t done there though, bowling with pace, accuracy and favourable wind, Hibbert tore apart the top order thanks to mixture of fast pace and assistance from the wicket. Before Civil Service knew it Hibbert had taken 5 wickets and Civil Service were 6 down and in huge trouble. Change bowlers captain Andy Hibbert and veteran Les Harris came into the attack and there was no let up for the Civil Service batsmen. Both A.Hibbert (2-7) and Harris (2-1) bowled with great accuracy and picked up two wickets each in quick time and Civil Service were bowled out for 49 falling 69 runs short of the target. Joe Hibbert was the pick of the bowlers ended with fantastic figures of 7-2-7-5. Next week sees the 1st XI play there first home game of the season as they host Parkhead at Bracken Moor. The 2nd XI, who are yet to play this season due to a bye in the cup and this weeks game being cancelled due to the weather, will travel to Baslow hoping to get off to a winning start

The Steels in recent weeks have steered well clear of what, at times, looked to be an inevitable and expected drop into the NCEL Premier division, with wins against AFC Mansfield away and Lincoln United at the Look Local Stadium helping them rise up in the table to a safe and comfortable position of 14th. LAST BALL DRAMA FOR OUGHTIBRIDGE If you value your nails, then I strongly advise you don’t watch Oughtibridge WMCC 1st team. Tight, last ball games have been something of a regular occurrence and Saturdays away match away at Rockingham Colliery CC 1st XI had everyone involved chewing on their fingers right up to the final delivery. In a rain affected game Oughtibridge were asked to bat and made steady progress. Hamza Ilyas laid strong foundations with an elegant 49 before, yet again, the middle order pushed the away side to a decent looking score of 201-6 from their allotted 46 overs. Duckworth Lewis was brought into play which meant Rockingham were looking at 205 to gain the victory. And a victory looked assured as they moved serenely to 115-1 courtesy of a couple of half centuries from Andy Shore and Naz

Khan. But this Oughtibridge team are nothing if not resilient. Wickets from Ben Ladd Gibbon and Hamza started to slowly bring the game back to the away side. The win though could have gone either way and as the last over was bowled Rockingham needed 10 runs with three wickets left. Enter Tom Starkes for his first over of the match to bowl his off spin rippers. Five balls later he’d taken two wickets and Rockingham needed a 6 to win from the final ball. And from that ball Oughtibridge skipper and wicketkeeper, John Grayson, bagged his third stumping of the over and with it a magnificent win for Oughtibridge to take them top of the SYCL Championship. And breathe… Joining them at the top of their respective SYCL division are Oughtibridge 2nd XI who built on last weeks opening win with a comprehensive victory over

Barnsley Woolley Miners CC 4th XI in a match reduced to 30 overs per side. Asked to bat first Barnsley’s young and talented side struggled to get a foothold in the cold conditions, eventually reaching 64-9 from their allotted overs Herbinder Singh Lali and Owais Bhatti both taking three wickets a piece. In reply Bill Green and Liaquat Ali eased the home side to the win inside 15 overs. So that makes it four wins from four for the two senior Oughtibridge sides. The first team host Aston Hall 2nd XI on Saturday at Station Lane, while the second team travel to Shiregreen. And on Sunday…its T20 time down at Oughtibridge, who host (and play) the first section of the DB Sports South Yorkshsire League T20. Teams from Conisborough, Penistone and Darfield are also involved. Games start at 10.00 with the final due off around 5pm.

Stocksbridge Rugby fall in the final Yorkshire Main 25-22 Stocksbridge RU

Bradfield Brewery sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby completed their season with another narrow defeat, going down 25pts to 22pts with the last kick of a pulsating South Yorkshire Trophy, Uniplex Bowl Cup Final against Doncaster based Yorkshire Main last Wednesday. This now means an empty trophy cabinet for the Piggy’s in a season that

promised so much. The effort and enthusiasm was present, but the quality was sadly lacking when it mattered most, again errors and needless penalties costing the travelling Stocksbridge squad victory. The bulky, heavier home side had a simple game plan, and stuck to it throughout. Their big forwards trundling down the slope in the first half, with

the Stocksbridge defence struggling to cope with their physicality. Three tries in the opening half hour put Stocksbridge on the back foot, and again they gave up possession too easily, or chose poor kicking options against a sluggish opponent. A superb individual try from back rower Reese Aspin, just before half time gave Stocksbridge a lifeline, but Bowskill was unable to add the conversion. A half time score of Yorkshire Main 17pts – Stocksbridge Rugby 5pts was not an insurmountable challenge, with the elements at their back for the 2nd stanza. Stocksbridge roared back into life after the interval, and with a sizable away following cheering them on, piled the pressure on a tiring home side, half backs Frith and Spencer combined to send winger Joe Jones, over in the corner to bring the Piggy’s right back into the game, Bowskill was off target again, which would prove to be crucial to the end result. A series of penalties allowed Main to gain some territory, and they scored a controversial try from a line out, where the official failed to spot a clear infringement in the line out, and allowed the score much to the delight of the home support. It begs a question when 3 appointed officials cannot get the rules right between them! The plucky visitors wouldn’t lie down and hard working centre Liam O’Leary was rewarded for his trojan efforts with a try as he crashed over from a set piece move to bring Stocksbridge within a score of the lead, Bowskill sponsored by Mr Byron and Mrs Teresa Turner was able to add the extras, from close range this time. Game on, as Stocksbridge sniffed glory, the home side slowed the game down wherever possible and some of their ‘injuries’ looked like a manufactured rest to the frustration of the on-looking Stocksbridge contin-

gent. Eventually the referee cottoned on, and showed a yellow card to a persistent home offender, this led to a sweeping Stocksbridge back line move involving that man Frith, O’Leary and Bowskill to give Jack Spencer, an easy run in to draw the scores level at 22pts all. With time running out a Bowskill conversion would have sealed the game, but he drew his kick wide. Still, as the away side, Stocksbridge Rugby would have been awarded the Cup in the event of a draw however, they failed to grasp the ball at the restart, and the home forwards summoned up some final strength to pressurize the Stocksbridge defence into conceding another needless penalty right in front of the posts with time just about up. The home kicker gleefully obliged, and Yorkshire Main were the victors. The JMB Tree Services Man of the Match award went to Liam O’Leary who’s efforts didn’t deserve a losers medal, Jack Spencer showed up well at stand off and player coach Rhys Keenan was busy around the ruck area. A disconsolate Keenan spoke afterwards ‘I’d like to thank all the players for all their efforts throughout a tough season’ he said, adding ‘I thought we could have won this tonight, but our basics have again let us down. Plenty to work on in pre season’ Three Club officials attended a Yorkshire RFU disciplinary hearing on Monday in the aftermath of the recent crowd issues during the semi-final. The penalty and sanctions have yet to be decided on as the other Club involved failed to attend the hearing. The 5 perpetrators have now been named, and will be subject to further disciplinary action aswell as the Club’s internal actions. Chairman Nigel George said “We pleaded guilty to the charge of failing to control our crowd, so we are now in the hands of Yorkshire RFU as to what the outcome will be.”
