MOTHER AND SON SENTENCED TO LIFE

ON Friday August 9, a mother and son were found guilty of the murder of Barnsley man Gary Dean and sent to prison for more than 50 years. Scott James Dawson, 41, and his mother Carol Dawson, 72, have been on trial at Sheffield Crown Court since Monday July 8 charged with murder. On Monday August 12, Scott Dawson was sentenced to 31-years in prison, with his mother Carol jailed for 26 years. Over the course of a five-week trial, the court learned of the circumstances that led to the murder of 48-year-old Gary Dean in the Silkstone Common area of Barnsley in September 2018. Judge Jeremy Robinson expressed following the sentencing how he believed the Dawsons intended to kill Gary and that neither of them could control their tempers, he said: “You both were filled with venom and desire for revenge for what you inaccurately perceived as police inaction. “Neither of you could control your tempers and it is clear, you, Scott Dawson, have a violently explosive personality and manner. MURDERED RUNNER’S FAMILY RELEASE STATEMENT

Continued from front page

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Mark Oughton, senior investigating officer, said: “I want to take this opportunity to offer my condolences to Mrs Dean, Gary’s parents and wider family who have demonstrated incredible strength throughout the police investigation and supported us throughout.

“Had your intention been to simply injure him seriously, your guilt would have been ascertained as he could have explained what occurred. It appeared to you both, that all previous aspects of your campaign were not working as you wished. Gary was carrying on as he had before. Gary Dean’s family issued the following statement: “As a family, we are left completely devastated at losing Gary, John and Denise’s son and only child in such a violent and horrendous way. We are all finding it very difficult to accept what has happened to him. “Life without Gary in it is going to be very hard. We will miss those precious family times we enjoyed together. Life with Gary was full of colour, adventure and laughs. For us and Gary’s friends, it has been like a light going out, making the world a much darker place. “We would like to thank the Major Crime Unit and their legal team for all the work that they have done to bring his killers to justice. “We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from family and friends and would like to sincerely thank them all.”

Fresh appeal in Deepcar murder investigation POLICE officers investigating the death of Nadeem Qureshi in Deepcar last month have made a fresh appeal for information. Mr Qureshi, 40, was found on Wednesday July 24 at around 7.15pm, on Station Road in Deepcar. He had suffered severe injuries and sadly died a short time later. A total of seven arrests have been made in connection with his death so far. Six men, aged 18, 22, 23, 34, 30, and 38, arrested on suspicion of murder have all been released on bail.

ESSENTIAL SUPERTRAM WORKS TO RESUME AT HILLSBOROUGH SUPERTRAM passengers are reminded to check before they travel as essential network repairs are set to resume at Hillsborough Corner/Holme Lane. The rail replacement works, to extend the lifespan of the Supertram network, will continue from Saturday 17 August at 9pm, until Friday August 23. Blue and Yellow route Supertram services from Meadowhall and Halfway will terminate at Hillsborough tram stop. South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) Director of Customer Services, Tim Taylor, said: “We’re almost at the end of this year’s rail replacement works, which are essential to ensure the continued safe running of the tram network. Once again, I’d like to thank passengers, area residents and businesses for their patience throughout this peri-

od and look forward to a full service resuming at the end of August for customers.” During the weekend of August 17 and 18, dedicated tram replacement bus service Y4 will operate a circular route between Middlewood and Malin Bridge. Customers should alight at Holme Lane to connect to trams at Hillsborough. From Monday August 19 the SL1 and SL1a services from Stocksbridge will continue from Middlewood Park and Ride along Middlewood road to Hillsborough Interchange. The BL4 service will operate from Malin Bridge to Hillsborough Interchange. All tickets valid on tram services will be accepted on the SL1, SL1a, Y4 and BL4 bus services. CityBus and Stagecoach bus only tickets are not valid on dedicated tram replacement services. A re-

duced evening frequency will operate to the end of service. Passenger information – including service updates, replacement bus timetables and traffic diversions - is available at affected stops and in leaflets on trams, online at travelsouthyorkshire. com and supertram.com, on twitter @TSYalerts and @SCSupertram and via Traveline 01709 515151. Timetables on Yellow and Blue route Supertram services will change during the rail replacement project. Tram Train and Purple route services will operate as normal. Malin Bridge and Middlewood Park & Ride sites will remain open and will be free of charge for the duration of the works. Travel tickets can be purchased onboard replacement bus services.

One woman, aged 41, arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, has also been bailed. DC Dean Craik, investigating, has appealed to drivers who were in the area at the time: “We’re interested in hearing from anyone who was travelling along the A6102 Manchester Road that day (24 July) at around 7pm. In particular, I want to hear from people who were on the section of road between Vaughton Hill and More Hall Lane. “Did you see any vehicles driving strangely or erratically? Did you notice anything

unusual that day? We would really like to hear from you. I’m also keen for anyone who has dashcam footage of this stretch of road, that evening to contact us.” If you can help, please call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. Please quote incident 831 of 24 July 2019 when passing on information. You can also report information online, via the UK Police Major Incident Public Reporting Site.

CAR CRASHES AFTER POLICE PURSUIT - WANTED MAN DRIVING THE driver of a VW Golf didn’t want to stop for South Yorkshire Police officers around the High Green area of Sheffield at 5.30am of Sunday morning. One officer said: “At the time we didn’t know why or what had happened, but our officers kind of guessed he wasn’t on his way to work! “He led us on a merry dance till his ambitions got the better of his driving skills, and he crashed on School Road, as per the photos. “Despite crashing, he decided a bit of garden hopping was the order of the day. Thank you to the local residents who let us through their house to try and

detain him, sorry for the muddy boot prints! “A short distance away he was eventually cornered by one of our officers on their own, but despite that, the driver still decided he didn’t want to give up and displayed some serious aggression towards that officer. “Despite being faced with an offender intent on escaping, the officer bravely tried to restrain him until police dog Reggie arrived on scene and assisted in detaining the driver.” The vehicle was recovered and the driver arrested for a number of serious offences in the Stocksbridge area.

The car being pursued by police mounted the pavement before colliding with a garden wall. Right: Reggie.

Westwood Team - Norman, Neil and Dave

WESTWOOD 2015 Limited, to give the formal title, is a local charity based at the Paces Campus in High Green; established in 2015 and registered as a charity in September 2018. It has a charitable objective of stopping social exclusion, or how they have defined it as stopping social segregation. How Westwood 2015 came about can demonstrate this - its predecessor was Westwood Training, a registered training provider with the DfES and an exempt char-

ity – however government funding cuts and changes to charity law in 2014 made it organisationally unfit for purpose, like many other small community based education providers who went to the wall. It has three volunteer trustees, all of whom had previous and current links with Paces Campus and the locality of High Green and Chapeltown. By doing this, they have developed a list of events and activities that individuals would like to see taking place in our locality, including an idea for a pilot project called A Life Well Lived – a creative writing programme. A partnership has been developed with St Saviour’s Church and during the summer holidays a couple of family learning events took place called ‘Hands Around the World’. Their ethos is to work with all people, who are, or in danger of becoming marginalised. Connecting with this group of older people through creative activity sessions will make all the difference to their situation. Westwood is also in the planning stages to develop and deliver the ‘Footsteps’ initiative - a three-stage programme about developing, training, equipping and enabling local people in High Green and surrounding areas. Local Consultant recognised for ‘Gold-standard support’ at national slimming event WEIGHT-LOSS Consultant Lesley Haywood is celebrating after being recognised for the exceptional work she does to support people in Chapeltown to achieve their dream weight.

was invited to discuss best practice and share her tips on delivering a first-class weight-management service. They were also treated to a healthy banquet at the company restaurant.

She was one of around 150 highachieving Team Developers from across the UK and Ireland invited to Slimming World’s ‘Team Developer Thank You Day’, at the organisation’s head office in Derbyshire. Attending the event is extra-special this year as Slimming World is celebrating it’s 50th golden birthday year.

Lesley says: “It was a real honour to be invited to the special day at Slimming World HQ, and in Slimming World’s golden birthday year it feels extra-special!

Lesley, a Consultant for the Thursday evening Chapeltown Slimming World group, was invited to the event after being recognised by the company as a leading Team Developer. This means that as well as running her own weight-loss group, she is doing an outstanding job of supporting other Consultants in Chapeltown and the surrounding S35/S36 area to ensure excellent service to slimmers right across the region. And, as part of the day, Lesley, who became a Consultant after she graduated from the Slimming World Academy in 2009

“The day itself was so inspirational from start to finish. To have had the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other top-performing Consultants and managers was an experience I’ll never forget. “I left Derbyshire brimming with ideas and raring to get home, and there’s no doubt the insight will enable me to improve the support I give to other Consultants in the area, so that anyone who attends Slimming World in the north of Sheffield, including the members who attend my Slimming World group each week, get the very best possible service and support to achieve their weight-loss dreams. “It’s great to be able to tell people in Chapeltown and it’s neighbouring villages that they

have some of the best Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland on their doorstep. “Being recognised isn’t just a triumph for me but also for the members and Consultants in our local groups, which cover Chapeltown, High Green, Stocksbridge, Oxspring and Penistone. They’re the ones who make each group the success it is, with their fabulous energy, the warm welcome they give to new members and the wonderful compassionate support they show to each other every week. “That’s as well as their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan and getting more active, of course. They’ve lost an amazing 39,346lbs (2,811st) this year so far, and each week as members lose weight I see them growing in confidence. “I see them changing their health, becoming more active, trying out new foods and recipes, and finding the courage to take on challenges that they’ve always dreamed of. Members who arrive at group with their self-esteem at rock bottom start to hold their heads high and

stand tall as they lose weight successfully and are encouraged and supported to make changes by the rest of the group.” Like all Slimming World Consultants, Lesley lost weight at a group herself and so knows just how valuable group support can be. Consultants receive indepth training from the Slimming World Academy to help give their members the support they need to make longterm changes to improve their health and wellbeing as well as passing their new habits on to their family. Training includes the role of diet and activity in weight management. Crucially, it also includes training in how to help members to lift the guilt and shame they may feel as a result of struggling with their weight and help them to form healthy lifestyle habits. To join Lesley’s Chapeltown group, which is held every Thursday at 5pm and 7pm at Chapeltown Working Men’s Club, either pop along or give Lesley a call on 0114 2847552. Air quality I wonder if readers appreciate the new air quality restrictions in Sheffield city include number plate recognition equipment on the inner ring road, whilst this at the moment will apply to buses and certain commercial vehicles and taxies cannot the same be achieved by stopping buses at the ring road and moving passengers to small electric/hydrogen buses and tram for inner city travel.

The news that we are to lose another shop on our High Street makes me think about the Stocksbridge High Street we had 60 years ago.

St Vincent’s Boxing Gym

We had a central Co-op grocery department and across the road a Co-op Arcade which was something like the shop on Are You Being Served, we could buy anything there from a man’s suit to a bedroom suite.

Ecclesfield Parish Council and St Vincent’s Boxing Gym would like to distance themselves from the article in last week’s Look Local.

We had two bakery shops - bread still warm from the local bakery. We had three butchers, two greengrocers, two shoe shops, two wallpaper shops, a gas and an electricity showroom - where we could pay our bills and order a new cooker for next day delivery.

Furthermore, Parish Councillors must come to council meetings with a clear conscience and will STAFF across the Southnot succumb to any publicity stunt. Yorkshire based Liberty

Alexandra Bee, Internal Communications Manager said: “The walk was a great opportunity to bring colleagues together outside of work while raising money for a worthy local cause, which provides much needed support for severely-ill children and their families.

Corporate Fundraiser for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice Julie Hampson said: “We are so thankful to everyone who took part in the walk. Your support helps us care for children and young adults whose lives are sadly just too short, both in their own homes and at our hospice in North Anston.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

STOCKSBRIDGE is a popular residential area, perched on the edge of miles of beautiful countryside. It is an area that although rich in history, is also looking forwards with a number of schemes and developments in the area. Although not as big an operation as it once was, the steelworks still produce top quality steel and the workers take a great deal of pride in that. The loss of much of the industry has led to the identity of Stocksbridge having to change and this has been addressed with a new retail development, Fox Valley.

But by far the most important aspect of Stocksbridge is the sense of community spirit felt among those who live here – whether born and bred or recently moved-in. Examples of this are all around us - whether it’s the incredible fight for the leisure centre, the many groups that meet in the library, the clubbing together of local people to revitalise the Friendship pub or Stocksbridge Park Steels, training footballers of all ages. It’s impossible to count the number of social, sport and commu-

nity groups in the area but there is a wealth of them. If sport is your thing, in addition to Park Steels there is a tennis club, two bowling clubs, a number of cricket teams and a rugby team who have just come off the back of a fantastic season. There are lots of social groups and meetings you can go to have your voice heard such as Valley in Bloom, the health forum, Valley React and Transition Stocksbridge. The history society have opened their heritage room down at The Ark, meticulously documenting the valley’s past.

We have amateur dramatics, dance groups, choirs and bands and the churches of the area work together as Churches Together. We have the Walkers are Welcome group, who outline a number of fantastic walks on their website, http://www.stocksbridge-walkers.org.uk/, making the best of our beautiful surroundings. Here in our latest Stocksbridge feature, we bring you updates on what’s happening in the community and also share some of the businesses that call Stocksbridge home. As we say at Look Local, live local, shop local and look local.

Round Hill fell race, 8.8 miles and 1,100 feet of ascent: 36, Ian Charlesworth 74-18.

PENISTONE Church played out a 1-1 draw at Skelmersdale in the extra preliminary round of the Emirates FA Cup on Friday. Einar White opened the scoring for the home side in the 58th minute but Shaun Mundy levelled the scores for Church in the 76th minute, earning his side a replay. Church manager Ian Richards spoke after the game. “This was a really good end to end cup tie. In the

first half both teams were a bit tentative, both teams’ defences came out on top, they were no real chances created at both ends the little bit of pressure we had they made two good blocks and we had a couple of good set pieces, likewise they had a couple of hopeful shots from the edge of the box and a couple of half chances. “They had a couple of good chances which we defended well and then we started to ask a few question like getting Nathan Keightley

in behind and getting good quality in and around their box. “The game came alive on their goal and it came from nothing, it was a really poor goal to concede on our behalf, a really disappointing goal and something we have to get out of our system very quickly, we’ve conceded too many in pre-season and in competitive football. “The response was excellent, we made a couple of chances Billy Law and

Shaun Mundy came on, it altered the dynamic of the game and our goal was the best moment of the game, of real high quality. “We’ll make sure we prepare right and take confidence from our second half and our defensive performance tonight, we’ll make sure we have a game plan which wins us the game and puts us through to the next round of the FA Cup.”

Mayne competes in two events

Local Sport ERNEST THORPE Halifax Road, Thurgoland 0114 2882152

MOT’s £35.00 NO BOOKING REQUIRED

Mon - Fri 8.30 am - 5.00pm Sat 8.30 am - 12.00 noon

LAST Sunday, Birdwell Wheeler Trevor Mayne travelled down to Bedford for the Finsbury Park CC 25 mile Open time trial on the A1. Strong winds meant that no records were set but Mayne, setting off at 7:51am, had a strong ride finishing in 56m 30s. This placed him seventh overall and second on age handicap.

Last Tuesday, six riders braved a torrential downpour to ride in the club’s first of three hill climbs. Fastest on the night on the climb up America Lane, Hoober, was visitor Dan Emery in 3m 23.9s. Mayne was fastest of the five Wheelers in 3m 41.6s. Second quickest Wheeler was Marc Peasgood in 03:54.7 and third fastest of the club’s representa-

tives was Rob Parkes in 03:59.0.

handicap prize went to Peasegood.

The following evening saw three Wheelers compete for the club’s 10 mile Championship in the event run by Barnsley RC on the Park Springs course.

Sunday saw two groups out. Dave Hudson, Marc Peasegood, Chris Jenkins and Philip Adams set off at 8am on a 100-mile loop to Howden via Naburn.

Fastest was Dave Scargill in 25m 32s, second was Marc Peasegood in 25m 44s and third was Paul Heggie in 27m 51s. The

An hour later, new member Alan Bullock, Lucy Bullock and Roger Bacon set off on a 60-mile loop to Snaith via Womersley. Rodger Holmes linked up with Barnsley RC’s ‘Wel-

come to new riders’ 35 mile ride out to Nostell Priory and back. This Sunday’s club ride is to Bothamsall, Clumber leaving at 9am from Brewers Fayre roundabout at Wombwell. Visitors are welcome. Rain hits golf schedule at Stocksbridge THE rain of last week affected much of the mid-week golf at Stocksbridge Golf Club. The main victim of the weather was the Jamie Hobson memorial Trophy on August 9. With visitors coming from across South Yorkshire and further afield, the Club took the difficult decision to postpone the event until August 23. This does mean that anyone still interested in playing in the event can still book a tee time. The competition is open to all and details can be obtained from the club on 0114 288 2003. The Dragons section were able to play their Wharncliffe Dragon competition on August 7. The competition is a singles event and each player plays matchplay conditions against the course with a full handicap allowance.

The winner, Dave Broadhurst (18) was an impressive six up against the course. Dave won with a clear margin and his gross score was 76, equivalent to playing off a handicap of 11. Noel Weaver (19) and Les Wright (14) both finished three up against the course in second and third place. Noel pipped Les with a better score on the back nine. The gents’ mid-week Stableford was won by J. Slodyczak (14) by a clear margin with 41 points. K. Harris (21) was second with 37 points and E. Steel (13) third with 36 points. It was a small field that played, dodging between the showers and high winds. Saturday saw the Barrie Turner Memorial Trophy played for the first time. Barrie was a well-loved and long serving member of

the club, noted for his sense of humour and friendliness to all. Barrie sadly passed away a while ago and the club inaugurated this competition in fond memory of him. The Stableford format competition was won by S. Marsh (21) with 36 points, an impressive score in the high winds and heavy showers that affected most of the day. C. Brailsford (15) was second with 35 points and M. Meegan (19) was third with 33 points. It was a small field of committed golfers determined to play in memory of Barrie Turner. Finally, congratulations to Hilja O’Sullivan (19) who won the Ladies AAA EG Medal with a net 71 on Sunday. Hilja also came in with the lowest gross score.

Tigers see off Scots SHEFFIELD Speedway Tigers boss Simon Stead was pleased with his side as they saw off Edinburgh 49-41 at Owlerton. Visiting number one Sam Masters was untouchable as he struck a stunning 18-point maximum, but the Tigers dug deep to earn three more important league points. Not even Danny King could keep up with Masters despite his impressive Owlerton form, but he still top scored for the Sheffield Window Centre backed side with 11points. There were solid home debuts for recent signings Justin Sedgmen and Todd Kurtz while Zaine Kennedy was in the thick of the action and produced one of the rides of the season to go from third to first as the lone Tiger in Heat Seven. Captain Kyle Howarth started off with a win before enduring a frustrating evening thereafter while Josh MacDonald contributed four third place points and played his part in sending the Monarchs back to Scotland empty handed. Boss Stead said: “That was a job well done I thought. “It couldn’t have been a better scenario to end up with with us getting maximum points out of it and Edinburgh getting none. “We covered for Drew (Kemp - who scored eight-points in the Euro Under-19 Final in Slovakia) well I thought and to do that and do enough on a night where Kyle has had a tough one is testament to the boys. “It was important to get the win and it was a good way to start another really big week for us.”

PARK STEELS CHAIRMAN LOOKS FORWARD TO NEW SEASON

STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels FC begin their Northern Premier League campaign on Saturday with an away fixture against Kidsgrove FC. Once again they will be the area’s highest placed representative at non-league level.

Steels’ first home game is the following Tuesday, August 20, against arch rivals Sheffield FC, in what should be a thrilling encounter with both clubs looking for early season bragging rights. Steels manager Chris Hilton has done his usual pre-season wheeler dealing, bringing in players that will do a good job for the club within the budget he has to work with.

Unlike some clubs, Steels don’t have massive income streams and Chris has done an excellent job over his five years in charge to create sides that try and play entertaining football and challenge for a play off position. Although last season didn’t always go to plan, Steels finished with a good run of form and obtained a comfortable mid table position. Chris will be hoping they find that form from the start this season and be looking up the table rather than down. Club chairman Graham Furness stated that he and his committee would love to build on last season’s increase in attendance, with local community and supporters from the surrounding areas

of High Green, Ecclesfield and Grenoside also coming along and showing their support for the club at what, in today’s football environment, are excellent value for money prices. Graham said: “Running a football club at this level is not easy and we are very lucky to have the excellent facilities that we have at the Look Local Stadium. “But to be able to maintain them and stay at this level of the game, we need your support. It would be great to see you at our games, come along and support South Yorkshire’s top non league team. The first home game is Sheffield FC on Tuesday August 20 with a kick off time of 7.45pm.
