CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCH IS A HIT ONCE AGAIN “The final figure is not quite in yet but with the addition of gift aid we have broken the ÂŁ3,000 mark. Our just giving page is still open and accepting donations. “We are looking at running the event again next year with even more things happening to get people through the door. “More live music, more stalls and a strongman/women competition to name a few.

THE second edition of a charity football match organised to raise awareness of male suicide was once again a resounding success. The day also raised a significant amount for a related charity. The Collins Cup took place at Look Local Stadium on Sunday August 4 and despite a grim forecast, the weather held until 6pm, allowing the match to be enjoyed by a bumper crowd. Male suicide is a problem which has affected many families in the north

of Sheffield in recent years and local man Lee Shepherd has organised the match in a bid to help. The match is in memory of Garin Collins, a friend of the event’s organiser, Lee Shepherd. Garin, originally from Edinburgh, was living in Australia but sadly took his own life in February 2018. He was a keen footballer, so the match is a fitting tribute. All proceeds from the day will go to Sheffield-based charity SToRMS (Strategies to Reduce Male Suicide).

New defibrillator for children’s centre

STEP Development Trust, The Venue and Early STEPs nursery are delighted to announce a new defibrillator has been installed on the front of the Stocksbridge Children’s Centre. Ian Cavanagh, junior chairman of local football club Stocksbridge Park Steels has generously donated the machine to local charity organisation STEP Development Trust after hearing about specialised defibrillator training courses run at The Venue through STEP. Over 60 people from the local community attended these free courses which were funded by a donation from the local Bridge Community Shop. In Stocksbridge, the estimated time for an ambulance is eight to 10 minutes, but if someone is defibrillated within the first minute of collapse, the victim’s chances for survival are close to 90 percent. This figure just shows what a huge impact this could have on our community. Course attendees learned where defibrillators are located, how to access and use them and basic CPR training methods to use whilst a defibrillator arrives STEP Development Trust would like to say a huge thank you to Ian Cavanagh, Stocksbridge Park Steels and the Bridge Community Shop, whom which this would not have been possible.

Last week to respond to Clean Air Plans

MORE than 5,000 people have already responded to Sheffield City Council’s clean air plans. The consultation will close on Sunday August 25. If you want to have your say on the air quality in Sheffield, make sure you respond to the consultation at www.sheffield.gov.uk/ cleanair before Sunday.

The plans include the introduction of a clean air zone – where the most polluting buses, taxis, vans, lorries and coaches will be charged to enter the inner ring road of Sheffield. Support in the form of grants and loans is being requested from Government to help local small busi-

nesses and drivers upgrade their vehicles to cleaner standard.

The council has been talking to those most affected by the plans – the taxi trades, bus companies and local businesses. Although the formal consultation will close on 25 August, further talks with all

affected stakeholders will continue up until the clean air zone comes into force in early 2021.

The results from the consultation will be published along with the final plans when they go before cabinet later in the year. The plans will then be submitted to the Joint Air

Quality Unit in central government to access £50 million of funding to deliver the zone and the additional support for local drivers. Information on the plans can be found at www.sheffield.gov.uk/ cleanair.

STOCKSBRIDGE MUSICIAN RAISES FUNDS FOR ANIMAL CHARITY BRING Me The Horizon star Oli Sykes raised over £2,000 for RSPCA Sheffield after they suffered a break-in. Sykes, best-known as the front man of Sheffield band Bring Me The Horizon and owner of Drop Dead clothing, has joined in with urgent fundraising efforts for the RSPCA Sheffield, after a ram raid on the centre saw a collection van and valuable stock stolen. Limited edition T-Shirts and tote bags, dedicated to the charity, sold out on Drop Dead’s website, raising £2,280 for the centre, which is based in Attercliffe. The break in, which happened in the early hours of Saturday July 13, saw the centre’s collection van, which was used to transport donated stock around the city centre, taken, alongside the stock inside, and significant damage to the fencing around the centre. As a result of the stolen stock, the four RSPCA charity shops around the city have been struggling to support the centre, which costs around £3,000 a day to run, as vi-

tal donations at the centre haven’t Diana Radford, Operations Director at the been able to be transported. On Thursday April 4, Neil followed his 80-year-old victim as she walked down Hillsborough Road and stole her handbag containing her house keys, phone and £46, knocking her to the ground in the process. She was taken to hospital with minor injuries, after a member of the public rushed to her aid.

Rehearsals will start in the autumn for a performance at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre in March next year. A Director from The National Theatre will be assigned to the group, to offer advice on the production. Performances from groups all around the country will be adjudicated from which a few will then be invited to perform at the National Theatre in London in June.

Steel Valley Beacon’s members of all ages are currently enjoying rehearsals for performances of The Wizard of Oz, to be performed at Deepcar St John’s Church in September and also for Addams Family –the Musical to be performed at Stocksbridge High School around Hallowe’en. In addition to the National Theatre opportunity, plans are also in hand for a variety

of performances next year, including an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland for the youngest members. ‘The Beacon’ grew out of a joint venture by churches in the valley to mark the Millennium and has performed at least one show every year since then. Mandy Aitken has become the professional director, with Daniel Timmins its musical director and between them have grown the membership to well over 100. Inyerface Arts give valued technical assistance. Anyone interested in any aspects of theatre, including valued behind-the-scenes help is very welcome to make contact.

Speaking on the sentencing result, Yvonne Fairbrother, who led the investigation, said: “This was a callous, careless act of violence against a vulnerable victim. “I welcome today’s sentencing, and I hope it can offer some reassurance to her, and the public, that we will not let these types of crimes go unpunished.”

Make the most of your staycation YOU don’t have to spend a fortune to make the most of holidays at home. With 16 nature reserves to visit around Sheffield and Rotherham you can have a great day out for free! If you’re looking for somewhere that really does have something for everyone, then Greno Woods nature reserve is the place to visit. It’s an ancient woodland rich in wildlife and full of historic interest which offers excellent opportunities for wildlife watching, exploration and recreation. One of our largest reserves, it’s both a beautiful and peaceful place to enjoy nature and explore the past, as well as an exciting outdoor adventure playground!

The woods contains some of the county’s most vulnerable habitats, including mature oak woodland and heathland. There has been woodland here since before 1600, and many of the wildflowers along the Trans-Pennine trail through here are particularly associated with ancient sites. Small wonder then, that so many wild animals and plants are found here. Summer highlights include northern hairy wood ant nests, a marvel of insect construction. The material in the thatched ‘roof ’ of a nest acts like an umbrella when it rains and like a solar panel in good weather, intercepting the sun’s rays and heating the nest above the temperature of the surrounding woodland. Comma, peacock, red admiral and brimstone butterflies make a colourful show,

while birdsong will lead you to some of the 50 species found here including willow warblers and blackcaps. A visit at dawn or dusk may reward you with a glimpse of roe deer feeding in a woodland glade or brown hares in the fields at the woodland edge. Adrenaline seekers can try our three downhill mountain bike trails, including the famous Steel City run. The woods are covered by a network of footpaths and bridleways, and we have loads of fun things for family visits including a den building area, toddler trail, geocaching and orienteering. Download the free Wild Sheffield app to get guided walks and try the Greno Explorer challenge, or join in on one of our monthly volunteer work days wildsheffield.com/volunteer

Your Letters Thorncliffe Playing Fields Dear Sir, After a seven year battle to bring the bowls, tennis and MUGA area into community control we now need help from the community to make this an accessible and used area for the people of High Green.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Friends of High Green parks is now duly constituted and insured.

After such a long battle many of those who worked The group aims to help maintain, improve and to get this far have moved on for a range of reasons. increase our parks activities and equipment. We now need people to volunteer to make the next Early days so join up and get in at the beginning, stage of development work. help shape our parks to fit our community. Our plans are to create a community pavilion, develop the tennis and bowls facilities, provide a men’s shed and engage the community in using Dave Ogle, and maintaining these resources. Other ideas also Councillor, welcomed. High Green. To do this we need help with grant applications, a fund raiser and people who are experienced in planning and delivering building projects.

As a matter of urgency would anyone willing to be involved in this or who would like more information please get in touch as there is a real danger of this site passing back to the city council if local people do not come forward to make it work for their community.

The project was developed by local charity, the Steel Valley Project, following a survey of people in the area which looked at how the outdoors could be improved for people and wildlife. The results identified that there was a need for more children’s play facilities so, in conjunction with Sheffield City Council, the charity identified the area of open space on Cedar Road and drew up plans for the site. The funding for the work has come from a variety of sources, including Sheffield City Council, Stocksbridge Town Council, Stocksbridge

An information panel explaining more about the work which has taken place and three new benches were the final addition to the new Pocket Park.

With work on the Cedar Road Pocket Park now finished, the space has been transformed. It includes a natural play area for children with sandstone boulders, stepping logs and a balancing beam, plus newly planted trees and a wildflower meadow which will be full of colour in the summer months and provide a home for wildlife.

Speaking about the project, Steel Valley Project Manager, Tom Newman, said: “This initiative has provided a great opportunity for collaboration between local authorities, residents, Steel Valley Project volunteers and local contractors. The natural play area incorporates locally sourced sandstone and oak and allows children to play in imaginative ways.

Sheffield chainsaw sculptor, Lorraine Botterill, was commissioned to create wood carvings of wildlife designs on the large oak logs, which children at Stocksbridge Junior School helped to design and put the finishing touches on the sculptures with hand chisels.

“Undertaking this programme of work has allowed Steel Valley Project to develop a new service which can now be offered to other organisations such as schools and parks who may wish to create similar natural play areas.

MEMBERS of Penistone Cycling Club this weekend took part in the Barnsley Boundary Heroes ride, in memory of Matthew Thornton of the Yorkshire Regiment, and organised by Barnsley Road Club. The course was a challenging 80 miles around the borough boundary, and took in over 6,000 feet of climbing- not made any easier by the windy conditions en route.

CHURCH BOUNCE BACK AND WAR MEMORIAL BEAT THORNCLIFFE

PENISTONE Church crashed out of the FA Cup preliminary rounds with a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Skelmersdale but bounced back to take a hard-fought win in the league on Saturday. Luke Aldrich was on target in the 75th minute as Church beat Bridlington 1-0.

Penistone success at Crowden Horseshoe Fell Race

Thorncliffe Over 35s 0-3 Oughtibridge War Memorial Oughtibridge kicked of their pre-season friendly schedule with a hard fought 3-0 win over a very tough Thorncliffe over 35s team at Civil service. After an even first 10 minutes the War Memorial started to find openings and it was no surprise when Callum Chambers finished well after good work from Chas Tunnard. It was Tunnard again who supplied the pass to Chambers who found himself upended in the penalty area. Chambers dusted himself down but fired over. In the second half the visitors began to dominate with Olly Black and Joe Long going close. It was then Black’s free kick which was too powerful for the Thorncliffe keeper and Matthew Cundy was there to follow up, Bradley Fletcher added the third with a superb solo effort which capped of a good win..

50 point weekend for the Green Army After two early wickets Stocksbridge were hoping to make inroads into the De La Salle lineup but we’re finding it tough. A partnership started to form so it was now the turn of the change bowlers in an attempt to take wickets. Les Harris was first to join the party, removing the dangerous O’Sullivan for 46. This now opened the door for Stocksbridge as Jake Vickers helped himself to two quick wickets in as many overs. Colin Vickers, back out of retirement once more, wasn’t to be out done by his son, as he also picked up two wickets and now De La Salle were in trouble. Jake Vickers picked up his third of the day before opener Joe Hibbert returned to the attack to take the final two wickets of the innings to also take his tally to three for the day.

Chesterfield 3rd XI 61 all out (Harry Hurst 3-8, Jack Reeves 2-15) Stocksbridge 2nd XI 62-0 (Harry Hurst 38*, Chris Ogley 19*) Elsewhere the second XI dismissed Chesterfield for just 61 thanks to some excellent bowling with Harry Hurst being the pick of the bowlers picking up 3-8. The bowlers were backed up well by fielders, a special note for James Hague who took a catch and picked up an excellent run out. In reply Stocksbridge second XI passed the total for the loss of no wickets as opening pair Chris Ogley and Harry Hurst both finished unbeaten on 19 and 38 respectively to secure a 10 wicket victory.

This left De La Salle all out for 113 which With both of our sides claiming excellent 25 meant Stocksbridge required 114 runs to se- point victories, the club secured a wonderful 50 point weekend. De La Salle 1st XI 113 all out (Joe Hibbert 3-22, Jake Vickers 3-26, Colin Vickers 2-18) Stocksbridge 1st XI 114-7 (Matt Price 44*, Jack Newton 27) AFTER last week’s washout, Stocksbridge Cricket Club’s first XI made the journey across town to take on De La Salle in a hugely important Division One clash. With both teams still hoping to have their hands on the Division One trophy come the end of the season, this fixture saw third place in the league table De La Salle take on second place Stocksbridge. With the rain falling hard the day before, the wicket looked slightly damp which meant the

PIGS FINISH THIRD IN CUP DESPITE an encouraging start to the season, Stocksbridge Rugby had to be content with third place in the Bradfield Brewery Cup at the weekend. A large crowd, enjoying the sunshine, BBQ and refreshments were treated to a festival of open rugby by all three competing teams; Barnsley and the eventual winners Ossett making up the trio of contesting teams. Missing several holidaying first XV regulars, including Mexico bound Reese Aspin, Stocksbridge were able to field a full squad containing several Development XV players, being given an opportunity to

impress watching Piggies supremo Rhys Keenan. Young Connor Price and Jack Martin were given their debuts, along with Adam Middlehurst, and all showed enough ability to suggest we will be seeing more of them in Stocksbridge colours this season. With both opponents being several divisions higher than Stocksbridge, this was always going to be a tough tournament for the hosts and the opener against Ossett proved to be just that, the visitors running out winners by five tries to nil. Ossett also got the better of Barnsley in their group fixture by two tries to one, leaving the South

Yorkshire neighbours to fight it out for the runners up slot. Keenan named himself in a more experienced team for this clash, with Andy Beal joining Sam Whitaker in the second row. Busy back rower Pete Newton failed a fitness test on a groin injury and had to sit out the fixture. Stocksbridge drew first blood with a powerful scrum effort resulting in a penalty try, skipper Rowett would probably have scored anyway. Jet heeled winger Ryan Smith scored in the corner after being sent clear by half back Ben Westby and Frith was just off target with a conversion attempt.

As the Coaching staff rotated the team to give everyone valuable game time, Barnsley hit back with two tries of their own, with one being converted to leave the final score 12-12. Barnsley finishing above Stocksbridge by virtue of their closer loss against Ossett. So the trophy goes to Ossett and their powerful centre Ben Kendall was unanimously voted as player of the tournament. The Stocksbridge player of the day awarded by club stalwart Mick Shouler, went to barnstorming prop Gary Woodcock. Shouler said: “He put his ample frame about the pitch and created havoc at the breakdowns”.

The club are indebted to Ian from ResidentialS72 for kindly sponsoring the match balls for the tournament and to Globe Holidays for sponsoring the team. Keenan was encouraged by what he saw on the pitch. He said: “The young lads stood up well, clearly there is improvement to be made, which is why we play this tournament to get up to full match day intensity.” Stocksbridge continue their preseason schedule with a trip to Cresswell Crusaders at the weekend, followed by a visit to Hallam and a tricky looking clash with Sheffield Club third XV.

PARK STEELS HIT FOUR IN DREAM START TO SEASON Kidsgrove Athletic 0-4 Stocksbridge Park Steels

IT CAN be difficult to predict the first competitive game of the season. But a young Steels side took to the well prepared Autonet Stadium in the new all red kit, against a very good home side and produced a classy performance to run out 4-0 winners. The game started at a frenetic pace and playing 4-3-3 The Steels pushed high and closed down so quickly Kidsgrove were under pressure from the start, and it only took five minutes for Scott Ruthven to finish a well worked move in style smashing past the home keeper. The relentless pressure continued and Luke Mangham and his two front runners Josh Hodder and Declan Slater, made life difficult for the home defence.

On loan Manchester United keeper Jacob Carney had little to do until the 25th minute when he was beaten by a fierce shot, which Jordan Lemmon cleared off the line. Pressure from the home side put the Steels to the test through to half time, but the very composed back four led by Liam McFadyen kept them at bay. The second half started as the first ended with the home side now kicking down the slope. They piled pressure on the Steels defence and the hard grafting midfield trio held firm to weather the storm. An hour in and changes were required. The impressive Nodder, who had picked up an injury, and one to watch for the future Declan Slater, were replaced by Lewis Whitham and Clark Greaves, both promising young talents.

Steels were back on top with fresh legs on both flanks pushing forward and keeping the home defence very busy. It was man of the match Luke Mangham who finally put daylight between the sides with a great finish after impressive approach play. With the home crowd silenced it was Mangham again a minute later, coolly slotting past the keeper to make it 3-0 on 81 minutes, his last contribution to the game as he was replaced by Robert Ludlam. Steels were not finished and as the home side suffered the young lads shone. Lewis Whitham turned an on loan Stoke City defender inside out before planting a well hit drive into the net. A great team effort with spirit, determination and discipline.
