SHEFFIELD HALLAM MP REPORTEDLY ARRESTED NATIONAL press outlets have reported that Hallam MP, Jared O’Mara, has been arrested on suspicion of fraud, along with his chief of staff Gareth Arnold.

The Daily Mirror reported that the two men were arrested before being released pending further investigation. The newspaper said that police officers raided the constituency office of the MP, with documents and computers removed investigation. In July, O’Mara said he was, “taking time out for mental health treatment” and promised to resign at the end of summer after a number of allegations from staff. Mr O’Mara said: “Please let everyone be assured that I will be tendering my resignation via the official Parlia-

mentary process as soon as term restarts. “I am not in any fit state to continue and nor would that be appropriate if I was. I reiterate my apology to my constituents, the people of Sheffield and the people of the UK as whole.” Arnold was at the centre of media attention recently, posting his resignation statement on Jared O’Mara’s Twitter account. Arnold then posted a number of Tweets about the politician from his personal account. However, Arnold claimed earlier this month that he was still working for the former Labour representative. Arnold told the BBC two weeks ago that he had “extended his notice period” but admitted he had not been cleared by parliamentary authorities to work in the of-

fice, including having access to O’Mara’s official email account. He commented: “I am running a constituency office on behalf of an MP without the required security clearance from the parliamentary authorities. It’s crazy, isn’t it?” A spokesman for Sheffield Hallam Liberal Democrats said: “We have been calling for the resignation of Jared O’Mara for a long time. “With crucial votes coming up in Westminster, the people of Sheffield Hallam need an MP they can count on to fight Boris Johnson’s Brexit plans and to stand up for local communities.” The MP has cut a controversial figure since ousting Nick Clegg from the seat with a number of complaints about his behaviour.

YOUNGSTERS CELEBRATE AS GCSE RESULTS ARE ANNOUNCED STOCKSBRIDGE High School pupils were celebrating last week as the school achieved their best ever GCSE and BTec results. A spokesperson for the school said: “We are delighted that, once again, we can celebrate with students, parents and staff our students’ best ever GCSE and BTec results. “The students’ results keep getting better and better and the students deserve every success as they move on to their post 16 courses. We couldn’t be more proud of the way the year 11 students applied themselves from the start of the academic year. “This year group also had the best attendance proving that excellent school attendance, high quality teaching and hard work really does pay off. “We have seen an improvement in all key measures. We are particularly pleased that more students than before achieved strong passes (five or above) in English, maths and science. 22 students managed to achieve

grades seven to nine in four or more of their subjects, whilst a further six students managed to achieve the highest grades (seven to nine) in all their subjects. One student even went as far as to achieve a grade nine in all of his subject; an amazing achievement! “Whilst these achievements are to be commended it is important to celebrate the diversity of learners at Stocksbridge High School. The grades students leave us with are only part of the story. “The progress they make over their five-year journey is equally as important academically and personally. It is always a privilege to see the year 11 students prepare themselves for their final year at school growing into young adults ready to embark on the next stage of their academic career. “We look forward to hearing about their on-going successes and wish them and their families the very best for the future.”

Sheffield’s Health and Wellbeing Board supports action to improve air quality SHEFFIELD’S Health and Wellbeing Board strongly endorses the city’s current approach to air quality and the proposed steps to make the air cleaner as quickly as possible. At its July meeting the Health and Wellbeing Board discussed Sheffield City Council’s December 2017 decision to carry out a Clean Air consultation and fully supports that the city has to do something now about poor air quality. Dr. Tim Moorhead, CoChair of the Sheffield Health and Wellbeing Board and Chair of NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group said: “Just as, many decades ago, we took significant steps to ensure clean drinking water we must now ensure the same level of attention is given to the air we breathe.

“I would like to see faster acceleration of the current plans and the city aiming for air that is safe to breathe, not just air that meets the EU legal levels. We know that poor air quality affects our children’s developing lungs for ever and this has to stop.” Councillor George LindarsHammond, Co-Chair of the Sheffield Health and Wellbeing Board and Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care said: “The board fully supports the ambitions set out in the Air Quality Strategy, including the proposal for a Clean Air Zone. We are encouraging as many people as possible to respond to the consultation and to make their views known.” Members of the Health and Wellbeing Board are asking staff who work in the organisations that make up the board to respond to the consultation. tubs around the village, provided five village entrance signs, maintained the troughs, organised clean-up days, liaised with Councils about traffic and worked with other agencies to plant almost 1,800 trees. They hold meetings six to eight times a year and new

Bublé, Williams, Jersey Boys and Madness tributes to perform at free event in Stocksbridge A FAMILY-FUN ‘party in the park’ is set to take place in Oxley Park, Stocksbridge, in September. It is one of three identical events to take place in parks across the city. Each party will have a music stage, live music performed by Michael Bublé, Robbie Williams, Jersey Boys and Madness tribute acts, and children’s activities from 11am to 4pm on Sunday September 1. Michael Bublé (by Adam Austin) and Robbie Williams (by Robbie the Show) tribute music performances from 1.45pm to 2.45pm and then a finale act at 3pm by The Jersey Boys (by The West End Jerseys). Entry to the event is free and food and refreshments will be on sale. They have been planned as the finale to the city’s summer celebrations of ‘100 years of Council Housing’ in Sheffield, where residents have shared their stories of moving into their new homes all of those years ago.

The celebrations so far have seen the city marking a landmark event that saw large scale council estates spring up across Sheffield when The Addison Act was introduced across the UK in 1919. The act meant that local authorities could develop new housing for working people and followed a speech by Prime Minister Lloyd George as British troops returned from The Great War, calling for ‘a country fit for heroes to live in.’ At this time, Sheffield embraced the challenge to provide high quality, well-proportioned housing, with gardens where possible, which was a very big change from working class housing at the time. MOTORCYCLE PASSENGER INJURED IN COLLISION SOUTH Yorkshire Police officers have launched an appeal following a collision on Mortimer Road on Saturday August 24. It is reported that at about 9.30pm, a Vauxhall Astra with black wing

The club wants to bring together brothers in arms from the S35 area, past and present, together once a month for CVBC where personal stories and experiences can be shared with like minded people who understand forces lingo, humour and traumas that are commonly witnessed whilst on duty around the world. Former soldier and Gulf War veteran Gary Baker has been a member of

the Club since it’s launch in March 2018. Unfortunately, due to personal commitments and health issues of some members, the numbers have dwindled this year. Gary is wanting to rejuvenate the meets, so any current or former armed forces members that want to reminisce on Saturday September 7 at 9.30am are welcome to join the club at the Waggon and Horses Wetherspoons in Chapeltown. HISTORIC LOCAL SCOUTING ARTEFACTS TO GO ON DISPLAY

CAN you date this photograph? It shows Scouts to the fore in Penistone Hospital Parade in Penistone Market Square, around 1925. It was given to South Yorkshire County Scout Archive by Mrs. Brenda Clark, daughter of William G Julian who joined the Penistone

Scout Troop in 1917 when he was 13 years old. He gained several Scout proficiency badges, including Beekeeper, Ambulance and Laundryman, and was in the Yorkshire (West Riding, South) contingent to the Boy Scouts’ International Jamboree in 1920.

This first major international gathering was when the founder of Scouting, Lord Baden-Powell, was proclaimed Chief Scout of the World. Scouts camped all round London, and travelled in to the famous Olympia building for activities. William was in the Winning Am-

bulance Display team. At 18, he became an assistant scoutmaster. The scoutmaster was Mr. B Raynert. These items will be on show with old records, collections, scrapbooks, photographs and Scouting memorabilia in the Heritage Open Day of South Yorkshire County Scout Archive at Hesley Wood

SUPERTRAM RAIL REPLACEMENT REACHES FINAL STAGE

SUPERTRAM passengers are reminded to check before they travel as essential network repairs are set to move to Glossop Road (University of Sheffield). Rail replacement works to extend the lifespan of the Supertram network around Shalesmoor and Hillsborough that began in April 2019 are scheduled to conclude for the year on August 30. From Saturday August 24, Blue, Yellow and Purple route Supertram services from Meadowhall, Halfway and Herdings Park will terminate at Cathedral tram stop. Timetables will change. Tram train services will run as normal.

The SL1 and SL1a will be extended to run from Stocksbridge to the city centre via Middlewood, Hillsborough and Shalesmoor. Tickets valid on trams will be accepted on the SL1, SL1a and BL5. Customers with a tram only ticket will also be able to use Stagecoach buses between the city centre and Hillsborough at no extra cost. Including, the 52 (between Woodhouse and

Hillsborough); the 57 (between Sheffield Interchange and Stocksbridge) and the 86 (between Lowedges and Chapeltown). Malin Bridge and Middlewood Park & Ride sites will remain open and will be free of charge. Travel tickets can be purchased onboard replacement bus services. DIABETES AWARENESS DIABETES consultant Dr Adrian Scott will be taking part in a special ‘Healthy Valley’ campaign next month in a series of events being held across Stocksbridge. Dr Scott will be delivering a talk at Stocksbridge Library at 10am on Saturday September 7 and will also be joining a team of volunteers later in the day in a special information stall at the Fox Valley Farmer’s Market from 11am through to 3pm. The event has been organised by local groups including the Community Health Forum and Stocksbridge Town Council to focus on good health and raise awareness of the dangers and risk factors around Type 2 Diabetes. Throughout the day on Saturday September 7 there will be Healthy Valley events across the town aimed at promoting good health. As well as the talk at Stocksbridge Library there will be a Type 2 diabetes testing station at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre as well as an organised walk in nearby Oxley Park. Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre (SCLC) will be offering you the chance to ‘calculate your risk’ in less than a minute on the 7th. Simply pop up to the Centre and go to our Diabetes awareness stall, where someone will support you through the process.

After you have calculated the risk we will then inform you of what little changes you can make to reduce the risk. SCLC is more than just a gym and pool. They promote healthy living so whether you are at risk of diabetes or not why not pop up on the 7th and they will show you all the exciting things they have to offer from Pilates to parent and baby swimming and chair-aerobics to squash. The day also coincides with the Fox Valley Farmer’s Market and to mark the Healthy Valley theme the line up of local produce will be joined by a pop-up diabetes information stall manned by hospital volunteers as well as Dr Scott. PLAQUE UNVEILING IN CLOCKTOWER GARDENS THE Clocktower Gardens have been granted ‘Centenary Field in Trust’ to honour those who lost their lives in WWI. Bonfire preparations start back in August with the application to the local authorities to hold the event and Stocksbridge council for a grant for the fireworks. Various risks assessments, child protection, first aid, food safety, paperwork to various legal and essential services, insurance, booking first aid, and a training course to set off the fireworks are just a few things that need to be done before the actual day, which starts 8.30am and goes on till 10pm.

Thorncliffe Sports Centre

Community work thanks

As your local councillor, I was concerned to hear about the recent difficulties at Thorncliffe Sports Centre on Friday August 17. Once I heard of the issues I received assurances from the Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for Culture and Leisure that appropriate action would be taken.

A Burncross resident, David Lawson, took advantage of his three British Telecom community days by clearing debris from the overgrown footpath on the A61 Penistone Road. David said, “I admire the dedication of volunteers of Burncross Action Team, who improve this area and wanted to add my support.” This is the second year that David has used this opportunity for the benefit of local residents, last year he cut back over hanging bushes and brambles from the entrance into the Acorn recreation ground. Both these initiatives have been most welcomed by all who use the footpaths. Our grateful thanks to David.

Places for People who run the centre, the police and the council’s own Enforcement Team worked together and the issue now appears to have been resolved. However, it is important to do all we can to prevent a repeat of such an incident. I have been assured that secure fencing is being considered among other measures and I will be attending a meeting at the site on Tuesday August 27 to discuss these issue in more detail. As your local councillor I will do all in my power to ensure that the excellent facilities at Thorncliffe will continue to be accessible to the local community. Consultation on plans to vary street lighting levels opens SHEFFIELD residents are being asked to give their views on a proposal to vary the street lighting levels across Sheffield, following the start of a trial in three areas of the city. The proposals, which support the recently launched Climate Emergency plans, encourage approaches in support of a lower carbon economy, greater resilience to climate change and cleaner growth. From Monday August 19 until Friday September 13, street lighting levels in Crosspool, Endcliffe and Meersbrook will be reduced on a trial basis. During this period, street lights will switch on responsively at 80%

instead of the current 84% before midnight and reduce from 54% to 40% at midnight until 6am. Lighting levels will be adjusted when footfall and traffic is at its lowest and the council will continue to work with South Yorkshire Police, and other stakeholders, to assess and evaluate any impact on communities. If implemented city-wide, as well as achieving a 380 tonne annual reduction in Co2 emissions, the changes will also see a number of other environmental benefits including minimising the negative effects on residents’ sleep patterns, certain nocturnal animals, plant species and people’s enjoyment of the night sky.

Importantly, the lighting levels will remain in line with the current standards, providing adequate levels of lighting on the highway. The consultation will close on Sunday September 22 when the views of those in the pilot areas will be assessed alongside the views from respondents across the city. PASSENGERS URGED TO CHECK FOR BUS SERVICE CHANGES PASSENGERS are being reminded to check before they travel, as changes to South Yorkshire’s bus network come in from September. Approximately a quarter of all services will see route or timetable revisions. Some local buses will bene-

fit from increases in frequency and changes to improve reliability. Transport providers said the changes, which mostly affect Sheffield and Doncaster, had come as a result of fewer passengers, increased running costs and reduced public transport funding to support bus services.

“We’ve worked hard with bus companies to protect the network and minimise the impact on passengers, which means a large proportion of services will not change.” SYPTE Director of Customer Services, Tim Taylor, said.

STOCKSBRIDGE Golf Club’s Dragons Cup was won by Dave Stringer with 35 points and better back nine, M. Bradwell also had 35 points. The Midweek medal was won by Pete Westhead with a better back nine and Paul Blake also had 33 points. Friday August 23 saw the Jamie Hobson Memorial Day being played in memory of the clubs late head greenkeeper. The day was excellently organised by Jamie’s colleagues Wayne Lazenby and Robert Grayson. The course was in excellent condition with 120 members and visitors participating in a team format, with many travelling from around the Yorkshire region. Jamie would have been very proud. Fittingly the winning team was from Russell’s Ground Care who have worked very closely with Jamie, the greenkeeping team and the club over the past few years. Over £2,000 was raised in total for the British Heart Foundation on the day. £800 was raised through an auction in the evening, many thanks to those who played and supported this event. The bank holiday weekend saw the Kilbride Cup being played in glorious weather. The clubs most prestigious strokeplay competition was won by an inform Lee Hydes with scores of 64 and 62 respectively. Andrew Finney finished second with two rounds of 65. Finishing in third place was Brad Lawton with scores of 63 and 67. The lightening speeds of the greens proved very testing for the weekends play. Sunday ladies medal was won by Bev Sykes with a nett 70. Margaret Pearson finished second with a nett 72.

LAST Sunday was a busy one for members of Birdwell Wheelers. In the morning Dave Scargill travelled to Goosetry in Cheshire for the LVRC (League of Veteran Racing Cyclists) National Championship road race. The race over five laps of a rolling 10 mile circuit saw a lone rider escape from the bunch. Scargill and four others escaped from the bunch and chased for two laps. On the third lap one rider was dropped leaving Scargill with three others two of whom refused to work.
