Man jailed for robbing taxi driver on way to Hillsborough 27-year-old jailed for more than five years after threatening taxi driver with screwdriver A 27-year-old man is now serving over five years behind bars after robbing a taxi driver, threatening him with a screwdriver. On the evening of Monday April 15, Arron Hammond got into a taxi in the Shiregreen area, asking the driver to take him to Dykes Hall Road. Shortly after, Hammond, currently of HMP Doncaster, threatened the man driving the taxi, as Detective Constable Matt Welsh explains. “Soon after Hammond got into the taxi, he pulled out a screwdriver and began threatening the man driving.

He demanded that he handed cash over, whilst pointing the weapon at him. “He fled the taxi, taking with him about £150 in cash and thankfully the driver was not injured. Thanks to the driver reporting the incident so quickly we were able to identify Hammond quickly too, through phone work and his phone records. “He was arrested, charged and remanded into custody just three days later.” Hammond appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday Sep-
tember 19 where he pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of an offensive weapon. He was jailed for a total of five years and four months. DC Welsh added: “This was a traumatic and distressing incident for the driver of the taxi and I’d like to praise him in coming forward and speaking to us. We need taxi drivers to report anything like this, so that we can act on it efficiently and identify those involved. “I’m pleased that Hammond admitted his guilt and is now serving a substantial sentence for his crime.”

Raising awareness of illegal attacks on birds of prey THE Sheffield Central and North West Neighbourhood Policing Team were at Langsett Barn on Saturday September 21 as part of Operation Owl. Operation Owl is an initiative implemented originally by North Yorkshire Police to reduce the number of illegal attacks on birds of prey. The team were in the area working alongside the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, Royal Society for Protection of Birds (RSPB) and Peak Park ranger volunteers to raise awareness of illegal attacks on birds of prey and how we can protect them. The purpose of Operation Owl is to increase public awareness of bird of prey persecution and to seek support in tackling it head on.
SOUTH Yorkshire Police’s Fir Vale Neighbourhood Team assisted the Off Road Bike Team on a high visibility operation around the High Green area on Sunday, following complaints from the public regarding nuisance motorcycles and off-road vehicles. They conducted joint patrols all day and seized two vehicles for various road traffic offences.
s part of the Operation, police A will carry out checks on known persecution hot-spots at random times to disrupt offender activity. Birds like peregrines, red kites and hen harriers are deliberately and relentlessly shot, trapped and poisoned in our countryside.
the RSPB and the RSPCA, working together with the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales National Parks in 2017.
This initiative, supported and governed by the National Police Chiefs Council Wildlife Crime & Rural Affairs portfolio, builds on the successful blueprint introduced by North Yorkshire Police,
Operation Owl is an ongoing joint initiative currently led by the Chair of the Raptor Persecution Priority Delivery Group Superintendent Nick Lyall and the North Yorkshire Police Rural Task Force.
The campaign will include a network of volunteers being trained to spot poisoned bait and illegal traps across the UK and the police are also calling on the wider public to be their eyes and ears when out in the countryside. Sergeant Kieran Frain said: “Our birds of prey in South Yorkshire are subject to trapping, shooting, poison-
ing and nest disturbance. We want to educate the public with the signs to look out for, and encourage them to be vigilant for any signs of crime helping us to reduce the number of illegal attacks on our birds of prey.” To learn more about Operation Owl, please visit operationowl.com

Henry, 89, won the award for his greenfingered expertise after transforming and maintaining the raised beds at Balfour House.
Neighbourhood officers at Balfour House;
Maggie told Look Local: “On behalf of all the neighbourhood officers and the residents here at Balfour House, I’d like to thank Henry for all his hard work and dedication. The garden needed a lot of work and Henry has worked really hard to get it up to scratch!” This year’s competition, which attracted entries from tenants, residents and primary schools across the city, culminated in an afternoon of
prize-giving this week to thank everyone for their impressive entries. Their hard work to produce award-winning floral displays over the year was celebrated in Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens, a perfect backdrop for the occasion. There were five prize categories as well as an additional Judges’ Choice award. The judges looked for well laid-out, wellmaintained gardens that contained a variety of healthy, colourful plants and environmentally friendly gardening solutions, such as composting bins, water butts, recycled
/ upcycled objects used as planters or garden furniture, and gardens that made space for nature by attracting birds, bees and other wildlife. The competition is now in its ninth year and is held to reward tenants who maintain their gardens to a high standard to improve the appearance of estates. It also promotes the benefits that gardening can have for people’s physical and mental wellbeing and raises awareness of environmentally friendly and sustainable gardening methods. Janet Sharpe, Director of Housing and
Spencer prepares to climb Kilimanjaro THE Chief Executive of a High Green charity and school which supports children, adults and families with cerebral palsy and motor disorders, is about to take on Mount Kilimanjaro. Dr Spencer Pitfield will travel to Tanzania on Friday September 27 for a seven-day challenge which will involve trekking 41 miles to reach the summit of the world’s highest freestanding mountain. He will be accompanied on the challenge by supporters from Taylor Emmet solicitors in a bid to raise as much money as possible for the campaign to raise a million pounds to build a new home for Paces. The Paces team will leave the UK on Friday and then spend seven days travelling from camp to camp for the arduous challenge. They are due to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest summit standing at 5,895 metres above sea level, on Friday October 4. Spencer said: “This will be an extremely hard and demanding challenge, but I am looking forward to the opportunity to tackle Kilimanjaro to raise as much money as possible for Paces. “The children, adults and families who are supported by our charity and school undergo their own personal challenges every day, which is why we want to ensure they have a new home that meets their needs. The fund-
raising for this trip will go towards that aim, and I hope makes a big difference. “Thank you to everyone who has already donated and I hope anyone reading about the trip – and getting exhausted just hearing what’s involved, let alone doing it – will consider supporting us.” You can donate to the Kilimanjaro Challenge at www.kili4paces.co.uk and Spencer will be providing updates during the trek – subject to phone signal - using the hashtag #Kili4Paces.
Neighbourhood Services said: “It was lovely attending the awards ceremony and seeing the dedication and enthusiasm of the tenants and residents who entered the competition. Thank you to everyone who made the event a great success. “We’ll be back the same time next year for the 2020 competition. Keep an eye out for the details which we’ll be announcing over the next couple of months.”

THORPE HESLEY AND SCHOLES SHOW A HIT AGAIN
THE ninth Thorpe Hesley and Scholes Village Show at Trinity Community Centre on Saturday September 21 was the best yet according to organisers. Over 600 people attended the popular event. The vegetable, fruit, flower, handicrafts, cookery and children’s classes made fantastic displays in the hall and church.
Trophies for the best entries were also presented. Many local groups and charities had stalls. The Jill Hyde Leigh School of Dance, Wentworth Youth Theatre and Fit24Camp entertained everyone. The dog show with classes including ‘dog most like its owner’ was again very popular.
Fiona Wilson said: “Thanks to Pure Beauty, Parkside Farmshop, Michelle Heppenstall, Reyt Good Yorkshire Vodka, Staniforths and individuals for donating raffle prizes. “The organising committee would like to thank everyone for their support and are looking forward to next year’s event.”

“I’m literally living my dream” SUSANNE is one of the most enthusiastic bus drivers you’ll ever meet. She loves every aspect of the job; from talking to customers, working in the control room to learning new routes.

scholes.org together with a full list of prize winners.
After moving to Sheffield in her late 20s, Susanne has worked in various roles over the years, but nothing has let that passion shine through like working for First Bus – it’s become a lifeline for her and her family. After difficulties in her last job in manufacturing, Susanne was signed off with work related stress. “I suppose the long and short of it is that I didn’t feel ‘listened’ to. I started to panic about going to work. I felt like it was dangerous, that people were at risk. I felt like I was the only one speaking out about it and nothing was being done.”
Accessing counselling and other support through her GP and WorkingWin meant that Susanne was able to talk about her feelings. “My stress was related to the environment I was in, and by taking positive steps to change that environment, I could take back control of my health and wellbeing. So that is what I did!” You may well see Susanne driving her bus around South Yorkshire. If you do, be sure to say hello – chatting with customers is one of the best parts of her job. She also loves the culture of her new organisation, the way the team support each other, and the fact that the health and safety of employees and customers is paramount. “I feel so safe in this new job. The training has been fantastic, and I’ve excelled in areas that I never thought I would.
This has given me a fantastic first impression of the company and the culture. I also really appreciate the sense of community that they have created. Even when I’m driving the bus alone, I’m in constant contact with the control room and get safety alerts and news flashes to keep me informed.” Susanne signed up to Working Win earlier this year. Supported by NHS England, the Department of Health and Social Care, and the Department for Work and Pensions; Working Win is a free trial testing a new type of support for people with mental or physical health conditions that are affecting their work or their ability to find a job. If you live in South Yorkshire or Bassetlaw, you can learn more and refer yourself to the trial at www.workingwin. com.

A continuous stream of people arrived and in all some 17 ladies participated in the activity with another two coming in to have a look as they passed the building.
The event was advertised as a drop in and do event, meaning you did not have to book in advance, but just turn up on the day.
There were plenty of positive comments from the attendees and as a result, another event has been scheduled. ‘Christmas Cheer Card Making’ will take place on Monday October 7 at the Parish Council Community Room.
This was a real challenge to both the organisers and the activity facilitator, Brian Nelson of Encaustic Art Plus, based at Elsecar Heritage Centre, as they had no
This seemed to do the trick as the first folk turned up a good half hour before the official start time and to make sure they had got a place.

Bogus officials in north Sheffield ELDERLY residents of north Sheffield are being warned about bogus officials coming to their homes, claiming to be from the water board, gaining access to their house and then burgling them. The victims have ranged in age between 74 and 91 years of age. The suspects arrive unannounced and claim to be from the water board or gas board or ‘The Corporation’ and that there has been an explosion nearby so they have to come in and check the pipes. Once inside one suspect keeps the victim talking while another/others go through the house stealing cash, jewellery, etc. The vic-
tims only become aware of what has happened once the suspects are gone.
In some of the incidents gloves have been worn. Also for some of the incidents the suspects have left items at the scene including a cigarette butt, tools, and a piece of plastic. A van (no make, model, colour or VRM) is mentioned at one incident. A yellow Mercedes (no model/VRM) is mentioned at another.

Your Letters EU I see Sara England lists all the so-called good points of remaining in the EU. Well, being a tax payer all my life, I begrudge waiting behind these so called EU citizens, people that demand free NHS treatment who have contributed nothing into the system and seeing foreign countries subsidise their industries whilst our government have their hands tied by EU rules. So called refugees taking our housing and claiming benefits to which they shouldn’t be entitled. There’s a list as long as hers of reasons to come out of the EU - the main one being you lost the vote get over it, as you say you can always move abroad. Bye bye then, and we’ll see who fares better. Craig Morris
Homeless reply I read with growing interest of Councillor David Ogle’s hope for Sheffield homeless people. What an admirably philanthropic attitude he has shown, however I have to disagree with his suggested area for said accommodation i.e. Grenoside.

or Hillsborough.
I was shocked at your lack of interest in the plight of our city’s street homeless. Choosing instead to focus on mud-slinging. As a city Liberal Democrat councillor I’d have thought you would have at least acknowledged the growing crisis of fellow human beings living and sleeping on our city’s streets. I think our EPC investing in a capital project, a building, is a sound financial investment, putting that building to work in partnership with a credible street homeless charity, would clearly be an ethically sound project. A proposal to council is just a formal presentation of an idea, it happens all the time. I just sought public input prior to making the proposal, seemed the liberal and, dare I say, democratic thing to do. Cllr Dave Ogle, High Green Ward EPC
The European Union I am glad that someone has at last listed all the benefits we receive from the European Union (Look Local 19th September 2019). I agree with everything that Sara England has said in her letter, especially the penultimate paragraph, “The E.U. has been used by the far-right as a scapegoat, with worrying echoes of what happened in the 1930s. No one wants to see the break up of the United Kingdom. We are far better working together with our friends and allies in Europe, especially in the face of a common aggressor. We need to show love not hate, and to build bridges not walls. I know who I am going to vote for and it won’t be the Tory party or the right wing Brexit party. Cynthia Ashton

20 years of happy bargain hunting CHAPELTOWN shoppers will be out in force as the St Luke’s Hospice Chapeltown shop celebrates 20 years of happy bargain hunting.
Between 11am and 3pm they will be offering free tea, coffee and cakes along with an opportunity to browse the rails and purchase some fantastic items.
The shop in Station Road opened in 1999 and store manager Shirley Patterson has been there since the very first customer walked through the door.
“The fact that Shirley and several of her volunteers have been at Chapeltown since the very first day demonstrates what a truly dedicated and enthusiastic team they are,” said St Luke’s Head of Retail Marie Egerton.
Now Shirley and her team of tireless shop volunteers are inviting shoppers and businesses to join them on October 2 for a special anniversary celebration.
“They’re really looking forward to welcoming Chapeltown’s shoppers to their special celebration on October
2 – and we think it’s safe to say that you’re going to pick up some excellent bargains while you’re there!” Chapeltown is one of 14 St Luke’s high street shops throughout Sheffield, selling books, CDs, DVDs, clothes, accessories and much more. St Luke’s also offers an extensive range of items at its eBay and Amazon online shops. To find out more about the St Luke’s shops and where to find them visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk
Firefighters win campaign to halt cuts in South Yorkshire FIREFIGHTERS have claimed an ecstatic victory in their fight against cuts to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (SYFRS).
to use its reserves to maintain safe crewing levels while lobbying central government for investment in the service.
After a successful and hard-fought campaign from Fire Brigades Union (FBU) members, the fire authority resoundingly voted to shelve the proposed plans to reduce the number of firefighters riding a fire engine from five to four, which would have seen 84 firefighter posts cut. Instead, the fire authority agreed
The decision came after extensive campaigning from the FBU calling for the fire authority to halt the cuts, including a lobby in Parliament and sustained lobbying of the fire authority. A rally outside of Sheffield town hall in June saw 200 firefighters protesting against the proposals. Around 10,000 people
signed a public petition backing the FBU’s campaign against the cuts. Councillor Tony Damms, vice chair of the fire authority, tabled the motion to use the authority’s reserves while the fire authority campaign for fairer funding from Westminster. Central government funding for the service has been cut by £3.4M since 2016/17, despite a 16% increase in firefighter rescues from 2017 to 2018.
Neil Carbutt, FBU South Yorkshire brigade secretary, said:“We’re ecstatic that the Fire Authority has rejected these unacceptable cuts. South Yorkshire firefighters are committed to keeping the public safe, and these proposals would have seriously undermined our ability to do so. “SYFRS has been consistently underfunded by central government. It is positive that the fire authority has decided to halt the cuts, but we
need fairer funding for our service. The fire authority must go to the government and demand adequate funding so that we can provide a safe service to local communities. “We’d like to say a huge thank you to members of the public and the Labour and trade union movement for their unwavering support. It’s thanks to them, and the hard work of FBU members that we’ve been able to win our campaign and continue to keep South Yorkshire safe.”

North Sheffield dance school celebrates trophy haul of 61
A NORTH Sheffield dance school is celebrating a successful weekend at a dance championship in Skegness after bringing back 61 trophies to the city. In a competition with over 270 contenders, pupils from the Erika Wilkinson Dance Academy (EWDA) came away with the trophies, as well as a prize for the friendliest dance school, a special prize for pupil Hollie Sargent who was picked by one
of the judges as her favourite dancer of the weekend, and also a first place for dancer Valentina Diaz-Ward which elevates her to the top competitor category of Premier Champion dancer. Erika Wilkinson, who runs the school, said: “I am so proud of the girls’ achievements! You head into big dance championships like this one where you’re competing against schools from across the UK hoping your
pupils will do well but never daring to dream that you’ll come away with 61 medals, a new Premier Champion, a judges choice dancer and an award for being such a friendly school! It was a fantastic weekend and all of the girls were amazing. “We’re now looking forward to practicing harder and getting better and better so that we can bring more Championship trophies back to Sheffield.
IN times gone by, a laundrette was more than just a place that you took your dirty washing. It was a friendly community hub where locals could also socialise and meet new people.
As well as the traditional variety of service washes, an ironing/pressing service, a full dry-cleaning service, a duvet washing and drying service and a collection/delivery service.
When you walk into the majority of laundrettes now, they are often lonely places with no community feel whatsoever.
Laundreams are the only laundry on the north side of Sheffield with self-service machines. So if you want to spend an hour or two getting your washing and drying done yourself, you’ll find free Wi-Fi, a free book swap, free tea and coffee (and sweets for the kids), and a community notice board plus as much or as little conversation as you fancy to keep you occupied.
Thankfully, Laundreams is a welcome change to this and you will experience a friendly atmosphere and a caring team who deliver the highest standards of service in every way to their customers both old and new. The shop in Foxhill has been a laundrette since the 60s but came under new ownership and management earlier this year and the new ‘Laundream Team’ has spruced up the shop, invested in new equipment and also extended the range of services on offer.
Laundreams also have some specialist services available including: * For restaurants there is a linens and napkins wash, dry and press service * For guest houses/B&Bs there is a fresh bedding service
* For sports teams with football kits/rugby kits/cricket whites that need to sparkle there is a quick turnaround between fixtures * For hairdressers and salons there is a fresh towel package * For horse and animal lovers there is even an equine and animal laundry service to get those whiffy horse rugs/ blankets and dog/cat bedding deep cleaned and smelling fresh again. “We love to look after our customers and their laundry, say the Laundream Team. If you visit Laundreams before the end of October and present the coupon in their advert, you can take advantage of 20% off any service you might need. Debbie, Steph and Jamie are waiting to make you feel welcome and do your laundry with love!

OUGHTIBRIDGE moved up to fourth in the Blades Superdraw League with a hard fought win away at Handsworth.
The visitors should have extended their lead but couldn’t find the finish when both Sampson and Thomas shot straight at the keeper.
Oughtibridge are still missing eight players due to an injury crisis and had only a squad of 12 fit players.
Handsworth equalised with 10 minutes to go only for Harley Scholey to score a superb winner just before full time when he fired an unstoppable shot which gave the keeper no chance.
In a first half of very few chances it was the visitors who had the best chance when Callum Chambers was put through by Strachan Sampson but fired wide. Oughtibridge began to gain the upper hand and deservedly went in front when Harley Scholey played an inch perfect pass which split the defence and Adam Thomas timed his run to perfection and finished superbly.

Stavelely Miners Welfare 1 Penistone Church 1 PENISTONE Church were denied all three points against Staveley Miners Welfare on Saturday after a late equaliser meant the spoils had to be shared. Playing at Staveley, it was Church who got off the mark early in the game with Kieran Ryan beating the keeper on 15 minutes. But there was to be late drama as Matty Davies found an equaliser for the hosts with just three minutes left on the clock. Church manager Ian Richards commented afterwards: “It’s disappointing for the players today. They gave everything for the cause today, everything for the football club and everything for each other and executed the game plan very well. “If the game was on possession and number of passes, Staveley should have won comfortably but football is about chances created, converted and how effective you are with and without the ball and we were very effective today and I was pleased with our performance.”

Stocksbridge Rugby off THE MARK Stocksbridge RUFC 32-21 Stanley Rodillians
STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby stormed to their first league victory of the season, racking up five tries and securing a bonus point in an encouraging 32-21 win over Stanley Rodillians in the baking Wakefield sunshine at the weekend.
The rolling maul was proving fruitful for the dominant Stocksbridge eight and Whitaker was Jonnyon-the-spot to break through and plunge over from close range, Bowskill narrowly missing with the conversion attempt.
Ricky James failed a fitness test, so Lewis Bowman and the burly Gary Woodcock took their places either side of the front row. Jordan Fletcher locked in alongside the impressive Sam Whitaker, whilst the reliable Ben Westby started at fly half to partner Adam Frith in the half backs.
From another Stocksbridge attack, a loose pass was intercepted by the home side’s 10 who jinked and weaved his way through some poor defensive efforts to score under the posts.
The visitors started poorly, failing to gather the kick off with the sun causing some issues, although Bowskill cleared the lines with a raking touch finder.
Stocksbridge produced some entertaining running rugby, clearly enjoying the wide open spaces with O’Leary looking dangerous every time he had possession and pacy wingmen Smith and Jones looking to counter. Another line out steal and second row men Beal and Whitaker com-
bined for the latter to chalk up his second try of the first half. Bowskill completed the first half scoring with a simple penalty just before the break. At half time, the score stood at 15-7 to Stocksbridge. The home side had clearly hatched a plan to be more aggressive after the break and their lock forward was shown a yellow card for taking a swipe at Joe Jones. Stocksbridge worked their way up the field through a mixture of skilful running and a power game, skipper Rowett taking full advantage of a dominant scrum to increase the Piggy’s lead. With confidence levels rising, Frith created enough space for veteran flyer Jones to skirt down the touchline and outflank the covering defence to score behind the posts for Bowskill to convert.
The home side kept plugging away and a break in play seemed to help improve their momentum as they stole a Stocksbridge line out and muscled their way to a close range try, luckless centre O’Leary unfortunate to see a yellow card for his efforts in the tackle.
Stocksbridge saved the best try until last as jet-heeled Ryan Smith finished off a sweeping move involving Bowskill, Westby and Frith to scorch into the corner and seal the victory, although there was still time for the home side to register another try before the end of the game, Woodcock jubilantly punting the ball into touch at the end. The Bradfield Brewery Man of the Match was awarded to Ryan Smith for an impressive all round performance however, Westby, Beal and the reliable Aspin ran him close in a pretty encouraging display.
Rugby Supremo Rhys Keenan declared himself satisfied rather than totally impressed with his charges afterwards as he said: “We showed some nice touches and played well in parts. We know there is more to come from us, so it’s all about getting better, stronger and more disciplined each week.” Stocksbridge will be looking to add to their victory with a tough test against Hull based Hessle who did the double on the Pigs last year, kick off at Coal Pit Lane is 3pm and entry is free. The club’s development side were also in action at the weekend, losing narrowly to a strong Wortley side 25-13. A couple of injuries to key performers didn’t help but it was great to see both old and new faces wearing the shirt with pride again. Club stalwarts Cy Kippax, Alan Eckersley and the returning Andy Fretwell all enjoyed taking to the field again.
Past captains gather at Stocksbridge Golf Club FRIDAY September 20 saw the annual gathering of past captains competing for their Shield at Stocksbridge Golf Club. The date for the competition had been delayed from August 16 when rain washed out any chance of golf. The conditions could not have been more of a contrast with warm, sunny and almost wind free weather. The competition was friendly, but not one player was ready to give in too easily. Three players came in with the same winning score of 36 points but Laurence Guest (17) had the best back nine score to win the Shield. He is pictured with current captain, Steven Haigh, receiving the Shield in the clubhouse. Mick Hulbert (12) and Dave Butler (19) were second and third respectively. It has been a busy week of competitions at the club, starting with the Dragons Summer Cup on September 18. Three players
all came in with the same winning score of 35 points but it was Mick Bellamy (17) who had the best back nine. Noel Weaver (17) and Les Wright (14) were second and third respectively. With that result, Les Wright has taken over the lead of the Summer Cup with 64 points. Dave Broadhurst slips back to second with 59 points and Sandy Murphy is in third place with 46 points. The gents’ mid-week Stableford on September 19 was won by Ben Stringer (6) with 37 points. Mick Hulbert (12) and Les Wright (14) were second and third with the same score as Ben but with lower point totals on the back nine. Saturday September 21 saw the gents section competing for the Alf Peace Trophy, a pairs better ball stableford format. With perfect conditions and the course in magnificent condition, it was always going to be a high scoring competition and so it proved to be.
Dave King and Matt Slater won with a seriously impressive score of 47 points. Father and son Mick and Ian Hulbert also scored 47 points but had a slightly lower back nine score. That finished a great week for Mick, featuring on the top three of the leader board for three separate competitions. In third place were Gary and Callum Siddons with 45 points. There was a good turnout for the competition with 25 pairs taking part. In the ladies section, Bev Sykes finished the week with two wins, firstly with a victory in the ladies Front Nine Competition on Friday with 18 points, in front of Hilja and Liana O’Sullivan on 17 and 15 points. Then on Sunday, Bev won the Ladies EG Medal Final with a net score of 74 shots, ahead of Ann Whitfield and Liana O’Sullivan with net 75 and 76 respectively.

ed brightly against a quick and youthful Newcastle, and after only three minutes a cracking move ended with Scott Ruthven missing a glorious chance. Playing on one of the best looking pitches in the division, there was some smooth passing football played by both sides. Ruthven had two further chances and Kane Swinburn had shots just off target, which proved to be costly as on 38 minutes James Askey ran 50 yards unchallenged to pass to Jordan Cole to slam home for Newcastle. The second half started brightly and on 49 minutes Ruthven made amends for his earlier misses, slotting home the equaliser.
Swinburn was replaced on 60 minutes by Clarke Greaves and just after Josh Nodder pulled up and was replaced by Lee Thompson. Then, on 68 minutes, Luke Manghan was brought down in the box, and duly smashed home the penalty for his 10th goal of the season. This put pressure on the Steels defence as Newcastle pressed for a way back into the game but Ludlam, McFadyen and Foulkes stood firm to keep Steels in control and the game was finally finished off with an outstanding goal from Clarke Greaves. Taking the ball from an attacking forward in his own half, he went past one player after another to fire home a stunner.
