OVER £800,000 FUNDING FOR LEISURE CENTRE new café with spectacular views over the Upper Don valley.
A primary aspect of the refurbishment is to provide wheelchair access to both the swimming pools and sports areas, something that was lacking in the 1960s-built building. This will be made possible with the installation of new wheelchair lifts. Also, as part of the on-going refurbishment programme, there will be improvements to the pool changing rooms and showers, in particular disabled persons facilities.
STOCKSBRIDGE Community Leisure Centre has secured £831,464 grant funding towards a major refurbishment project. The centre was closed by Sheffield City Council in 2013 and rescued by the local community, re-opening its doors in January 2014.
Grants awarded by the Lottery Community Fund, Sport England, Well North and the East Peak Innovation Partnership will enable an extensive refurbishment programme, with an emphasis on improving disabled access to all parts of the centre, to go ahead.
The six-month high value building project includes significant alterations to the main entrance and front of house.
The new facilities are an integral part of the long-term plan to create a multi-use centre for health and well-being for residents of the Upper Don Valley. Supported by Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Oughtibridge surgeries, the centre will continue to work closely with local GPs to ensure that local people have a facility on their doorstep to provide for both their physical and mental well-being.
These include a new fully accessible front entrance, a disabled-friendly reception area, a new meeting and conference room, offices and a brand According to chief executive, Andy Clarke, “This is great news
for the long term future of the community-run leisure centre. In just over five years, local volunteers have turned a much- loved facility, destined for demolition by the Council, into a viable and sustainable amenity. “We are extremely grateful to all the funders for awarding this grant funding and making this project possible, particularly the players of the National Lottery. This recognises the impact our centre is making in improving the health and well-being of our residents and the value that everyone brings to our growing reputation and on-going success. “Thanks to the overwhelming support received since our reopening in January 2014, we have created a facility for all the family, second to none in the area. Now, thanks to this funding, we will be able to encourage even greater use of the building, in particular our physically less-abled visitors. It will also enable us to take advantage of new business opportunities for ensuring the Centre’s long term future.”

Team Green Moor celebrates gold medal GREEN Moor’s community gardeners are celebrating today after walking away with a gold medal in the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) annual Britain in Bloom competition, announced at a ceremony this week. Four finalists represented the region following success in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition last year. A total of 68 groups from across the UK competed in 12 categories with each also vying for a gold, silver gilt, silver or bronze medal. Yorkshire swept the board with all four finalists winning gold. Firsttime finalist Green Moor, this year’s smallest entry with a population of just 90, won the fiercely contested village category, seeing off six other challengers. Green Moor impressed the judges with its top-notch horticulture and environmental dedication including a water-saving irrigation system and interactive nature trail. The parish has even bought a healthland area on former quarry land, dubbed the ‘Isle of Skye’, to preserve the biodiversity hotspot. Finalists are judged not only on their floral displays but environ-
mental and community efforts. Each was visited by a pair of RHS judges over a fortnight from the end of July. Darren Share, Chair of the RHS Britain in Bloom judges, said: “Congratulations to all of this year’s UK finalists. It’s incredibly humbling to hear about the huge efforts they’ve invested in making our villages, towns and cities greener places to live, work and visit. “This makes a tremendous difference locally but has a wider impact too. Gardeners are increasingly having to respond to the changing climate, declining pollinator numbers and plastic waste and more communities are galvanizing people around these issues to bring about positive change.” The Yorkshire finalists collected their awards from Baroness Floella Benjamin, RHS Vice President, at the ceremony held in the RHS Lindley Hall, London. Dave Rose said: “On behalf of Team Green Moor, can I extend a massive thank you for your support this year. At the awards ceremony, Green Moor were awarded a gold medal and secured the overall category win as Best Small Village in Britain.”

Led by Pennine Prospects, the Celebrating Our Woodland Heritage Project is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Between 2017 and 2019 the project has involved the archaeological investigation of woodlands across the South Pennines, a subject that has received little attention in the past. Community groups, families and youth organisations have identified and recorded over 1000 archaeological features, as well as undertaken five excavations on sites relating to the charcoal industry, the First World War and a Roman Road. All the results have been used to inform the landowners as to how to manage the heritage on their property, as well as to enhance the regional Historic Environment Records. This presentation will serve to promote the results of the project.
Bathing a problem? – we can help • Wet rooms • Walk in showers and baths • Waterproof wall panelling • Slip resistant safety flooring • Grab rails, shower seats & raised toilets • Established family business • Zero VAT on disabled bathrooms
This talk will give us lots of ideas about how to study the archaeological features within our woodland around Stocksbridge.

It will be held in the meeting room of Christ Church on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge. Refreshments are available and all are welcome.

Pupils create harvest rainbow for food bank CHILDREN from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in High Green organised a collection of food for their local food bank and challenged the rest of their school to “make the rainbow”. The school community rose to the challenge and the group of children carried all of it to the St Saviour’s Community Project where it was received with thanks by Maureen Greaves. The food collected will be used to create hampers for families over the next couple of months.
OUGHTIBRIDGE MAN CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY
Are you entitled to a free flu vaccination? NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is encouraging those eligible to get their flu vaccination and help minimise the spread of flu this winter. The following groups of people are eligible for free flu vaccinations, either via their GP or pharmacist; all adults over the age of 65, pregnant women, children aged two and three years old (on 31 August 2019), people aged six months to 64 years with underlying health conditions or those with a learning disability. These groups are at particular risk from flu and the vaccination is still the best protection against an unpredictable virus. Social care and hospice workers are also eligible and vaccination will be available through community pharmacy or their registered general practice on presentation of evidence of employment. Children aged between school years reception and year 6 will be offered the nasal spray at school if not appropriate.
OUGHTIBRIDGE man Harry Pressley celebrated his 100th birthday on September 24.
Harry and Rita raised six children at their home in Oughtibridge; Katherine, Geraldine, Stephen, Moira, Kieran and Clare.
Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Tony Downing, visited his home for the celebration, together with many members of his large family.
Harry now has 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He met his wife, Rita, in Liverpool where Harry was posted during the Second World War and they were married for 59 years until Rita passed away in the year 2000. Harry worked at General Refractories in Deepcar (formerly Lowoods) throughout his working life. At the age of 54, his employers paid for him take a year off in recognition of his long service. He used this time to earn a Master of Science degree at the University of Sheffield.
Daughter Geraldine said: “He has been a kind and loving father to us all. Dad still lives at home with the help of his wonderful carers. “As a lifelong Catholic, dad received a papal blessing to celebrate his 100th birthday. The certificate was presented to him by Father Michael from the Sacred Heart church. This certificate will be treasured by his family.” The photograph shows Harry with two his daughters, Geraldine Bebb and Clare McFadden and the Lord Mayor of Sheffield.
Flu is a severe viral infection of the respiratory tract (nose, mouth, throat, bronchial tubes and lungs). It is a highly infectious illness which spreads rapidly in communities and even people with mild or no symptoms can infect others. Flu is different to a common cold; symptoms of flu include a fever, chills, headache, aching muscles and joint pain and fatigue. Dr Terry Hudsen, a GP and Chair at Sheffield CCG, said: “For most healthy people, flu symptoms can make you feel exhausted and unwell and you have to stay in bed and rest until you get better, but for people with underlying health conditions, children, pregnant women or the elderly flu can be very serious. “It’s really important that if you are eligible for a free flu jab you take up the offer. It is offered to these vulnerable groups of people because we know that they need it to stay well during the flu season. There is a common myth that the flu vaccination gives you
flu - this isn’t true, the injected flu vaccination given to adults contains inactivated flu virus, so it can’t give you the flu.” People over 65 should have already been invited to flu clinics, if you are in this age bracket and haven’t been invited to a flu clinic yet, please contact your GP. Pregnant women, parents of children aged two and three years old, people with underlying health conditions or those with a learning disability should contact their GP to find out when flu clinics are being held in their practice. The clinics for this group of people will run from October. The elderly, people with long term health conditions and pregnant women will be given the vaccination as an injection and children aged 2 – 18 years old will be offered the nasal spray unless contra-indicated. The NHS vaccinations will be provided free of charge by their GP. Some community pharmacies can offer the vaccinations for these patients from age 18. If you are not in the at risk groups but would like a flu vaccination, you can pay for the vaccination at your local pharmacy. Dr Hudsen continues: “Aside from having your flu vaccine, the best way to prevent the spread of flu is to practice good hand hygiene. Catch coughs and sneezes in a tissue, throw the tissue away and wash your hands. If you think you have flu, stay home and rest until you feel better, call NHS 111 if you have an underlying health condition or feel really unwell. “Having a well-stocked medicine cabinet is useful for if flu strikes – paracetamol (or Calpol for children), ibuprofen, aspirin, cough medicine and throat lozenges may help alleviate the symptoms of flu. Remember, your local pharmacists can advise on the medicine you need to help you feel better.” For more information about the flu vaccination visit www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/flu-influenza-vaccine/.

Labour select Penistone and Stocksbridge candidate FRANCYNE Johnson has been selected as Labour’s candidate for the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency to stand at the next general election. Members picked Francyne, a local mum with a background in youth and community work. She currently represents the Stocksbridge and Upper Don ward in the constituency as a councillor. Speaking after the selection, Francyne said: “The Tories are destroying the fabric of our society. The next general election is our last opportunity to rescue our NHS, tackle the climate crisis and to invest in our public services which have been ground down after a decade of austerity and privatisation. “I come from a working-class background and have worked in retail, catering and cleaning. I know what it’s like trying to raise a family on a low income. It’s so vital that we have more MPs with this experience - they are meant to represent us after all.
DEMENTIA PROVISION
STOCKSBRIDGE Community Care Group has announced that following a successful tender process, the contract for the Stocksbridge & Upper Don community’s dementia provision has been awarded to them from Sheffield City Council.
“People in Penistone and Stocksbridge have been let down badly by the Tories and the Lib Dems. The more rural areas like ours are really hit hard by the cuts. Only a Labour government will get the funding we need into our public transport, our schools and our NHS.” The current MP, Angela Smith, recently announced that she would not be contesting the seat and will instead be looking to secure the seat of seat of Altrincham and Sale West for the Liberal Democrats. The Liberal Democrats have already put forward Hannah Kitching, a councillor for Penistone West in Barnsley Council, as their candidate. The Conservative candidate for the seat is Miriam Cates, a former teacher who now runs a tech company with her husband and serves as a parish councillor for Oughtibridge. The Brexit Party’s candidate is John Booker and Richard Trotman will be standing for the Green Party.
POPULAR BONFIRE CANCELLED DUE TO SICK HORSE
The contract includes providing dementia-specific local information, advice and guidance, providing six-monthly courtesy calls to people diagnosed with dementia, running a community dementia grant pot for the area, providing a specialist dementia group (a more frequent Memory Time Café) and dementia-friendly activities (a Musical Memories Community Tour). The contract began start on October 1 and runs to December 31 2021. Dave Cooper, who is currently running a number of successful dementia projects in north Sheffield, will be involved in project design and development for SCCG. Dave said: “This is fantastic news. Not only will it help improve the quality of life for those newly diagnosed with dementia and those living well with dementia but we can through the grant pot assist those groups that wish to include them more in our friendly and caring community. “This could not be timelier as we are in the process of developing a community telephone help line and website to better inform people what is available in the Stocksbridge and Upper Don area to combat isolation and loneliness”. For more information on Community Dementia Provision in the area, call Stocksbridge Community Care Group office on 0114 283 0141or email sccg.communitydementiaprovision@gmail.com
GRENOSIDE Scout and Guide Group are sad to announce that their extremely popular bonfire and firework display has been cancelled this year due to a sick horse living in a nearby field. Organisers of the bonfire, which attracts hundreds of people from across Sheffield each year, have tried to work with the horse’s owner to find a solution, however due to a bad case of ‘laminitis’ the horse cannot be moved. Chris Levesley, part of the Group’s fundraising
committee said: “If you’ve been to one of our events then you’ll be aware that there are horses in the fields around us. We’d arranged with the owner for them to be moved to the field furthest away, but one of the horses can barely move. “We have to put the welfare of this horse first and therefore couldn’t have the big firework display, we all love, so we have been left with no choice but to cancel the event.” The Scouts and Guides Group have been running
the bonfire in Grenoside for over 20 years and it is considered to be one of the best and most well organised events in the area. It is the groups biggest fundraising event of the year, which means cancelling it will have an impact on their annual fundraising efforts. This year that loss will have more of an impact than normal as the group are halfway through a 144m2 extension project to extend their Saltbox Lane Headquarters. So far, a whop-
ping £60k has been raised to fund the project but another £20K is needed to complete the remaining building work. Chris added: “We’re extremely disappointed as it’s one of the highlights of the year, but we will be back next year with a bigger and better Bonfire and Fireworks night. We also have lots of other events coming up such as Burns Nights and Millionaires Night, in conjunction with Wortley Rotary Club, so watch this space.”
The Group’s next fundraising event will be the Christmas Fair event at Grenoside Scout hut on Saturday November 30 at 10.30am. To find out more about this or any of their upcoming events follow Grenoside Scout and Guide Group Events and Info on Facebook or Twitter. If anyone would like to get involved with the fundraising activities or would like to make a donation to towards the building work then please email grenosandg@gmail.com

Alex celebrates success with Streets Ahead SHEFFIELD youngsters are gaining hands on experience working for the city’s highways maintenance contract, developing invaluable skills to prepare them for their future careers. With a contract of employment and the chance to work across many areas of the business, being an apprentice at Streets Ahead has numerous benefits. Since 2012, a total of 85 young apprentices from Sheffield, over the age of 16, have been employed by Amey locally and many of them have gone on to secure a permanent job. Like Alex Marriott, who started at Streets Ahead as an apprentice four years’ ago and has since gone on to become a team leader at the Ecclesfield office. Alex also won a group-wide Amey Star Award earlier this year for outstanding achievement. Apprentice, Alex Marriott, receives a Star Award earlier this year
Alex says of her time as an apprentice, “I chose Amey for my Apprenticeship after
reading up on the company and realising it was a large organisation that could potentially offer me big opportunities. “I also wanted to make a long-term career out of my Apprenticeship, hence why I chose Amey as I knew this could be possible. “The role I was in at the time was a pre-works co-ordinator. This job included dealing with operatives, managing performance requirements and monitoring live dashboards on the internal IT system. I dealt with customer enquiries whilst planning the work in to be completed within a specified time. “I’ve learnt a lot and gained knowledge on the operations side of the business, as well as learning about myself along the way. I felt like my confidence grew whilst in this role and I believe I pushed myself out of my comfort zone. I learnt that if you put the work in, you do get noticed and you become a valuable team member.”
Since 2012 the company has hired over 278 apprentices who, in addition to their technical and personal development training, have the opportunity to complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Helen Johnson, Community Engagement Manager added: “We are very proud of our apprentices and everything they achieve whilst working with us in Sheffield. There is no doubt that the best way of learning is by doing it, and many of them go on to surprise themselves with what they can achieve. “Our group from two years ago are just finishing their Apprenticeships, and seven of them have already secured permanent jobs across a wide variety of occupations here at the Depot; from Grounds and Highway Maintenance, to the Commercial team, Arboriculture and Customer Services.” For more on Apprenticeships with Amey, visit: www.amey. co.uk/your-career/apprentices

Folk Prostate Cancer Concerts return to Penistone WITH the success of the Folk Prostate Cancer Concerts in November 2018, raising just over an incredible £7,000, it will be taking place at Penistone Paramount again this year. This time however, there will be music over two days! It will consist of a Saturday afternoon and evening concert, November 16 and another show on Sunday night, November 17. The support last year was enormous with two sold out shows in one day and this year is set to be even better. What is key here is raising awareness of Prostate Can-
cer, raising money for such a great cause in Folk Prostate Cancer UK, and saving lives. Music is a hugely valuable and powerful way of getting this message across. Every artist taking part is doing so because they too want to spread the word and help prostate cancer statistics to reduce. The line-up this year includes none other than Barnsley songstress, Mercury nominated Kate Rusby, and one of the UK greatest storytellers and songwriters, Ralph McTell who is now celebrating more than 50 years in the business.
Get yourself to the wonderful Penistone Paramount for what is sure to be a thrilling weekend of music from some of the leading lights in the Folk and Acoustic music world: SATURDAY AFTERNOON, November 16: Eliza Carthy Ralph McTell SATURDAY EVENING, November 16: Lucy Booth Michael McGoldrick Trio Kate Rusby SUNDAY EVENING, November 17: Martin Simpson Damien O’Kane & Ron Block Gary Stewart’s Graceland

Addams Family I had my first experience of the Addams Family last Saturday night having never really been attracted to the idea of it but wanting to support our local Steel Valley Beacon Arts Drama group. What a treat I would have missed! It was a wonderful production - excellent costumes, makeup, choreography, singing and acting. If you haven’t seen it there are performances next Friday and Saturday at Stocksbridge High School and I would encourage you to support this talented local group whose members range in age from four to over 70. SVBA is in its 20th year and has maintained a high standard of entertainment throughout these years. Doris Stubbs
Christmas parcels The churches together in Stocksbridge give out gifts to all people in the Stocksbridge and district who are over 80 years of age. This number changes each year due to deaths and others attaining this age. Graham Helliwell needs to know of anyone who is over 80 as soon as possible. The surname and address are required for the list. Please contact Graham on 0114 288 2498 or anyone in your local churches.

Dear Editor
support actions agreed with the EU. Why would we want to import chickens flown in from America rather than buy locally reared birds, or some from our nearest neighbours if we cannot rear enough ourselves?
The letter from the elderly Barnsley man that Kevan Godley refers to (in his letter last week) did not imply that Brexit voters were stupid and/or racist but that they, along with the rest of us, were not well-informed (even mis-informed) at the time of the referendum and not many people would argue with that.
My conclusion is that we are better off with the deal we already have with the EU; it is not ideal and could be reformed but only if we stay as members. I hope Parliament can agree a deal and then ask people to confirm this is still their preferred choice for our future or to reconsider and stay as members of the EU.
Mr Godley goes on to repeat two claims that I think need further consideration.
Richard Webb, Penistone

So in a way, yes Kevan, I might have to get round to the possibly uncomfortable reality that the only possible Bxxxxx is a bit like being in the EU and this might be where the conversation got bit more difficult, because if we agree that the EU needs reforming it’s going to be a bit tricky doing much of the old reforming magic without being part of the political process any more. Anyway, it’s my round and when I am back from the bar I reckon we can patch things up because I actually like that old leave slogan ‘Take back control’. Maybe I’ll be getting my coat though before explaining how there is only one way we can do that now. Cheers, Peter Morton

WHATEVER the size of your garden creating a wildlife friendly habitat is simple to do and can attract a host of garden visitors. A soggy shady area can be turned into a bog garden or a single buddleia tree will attract butterflies and other pollinators. Small creature friendly features that will attract and sustain wildlife can be incorporated into any outside space – and are relatively easy to maintain. And, if you build your wildlife areas, the wildlife will come. Plant a wildlife friendly hedgerow - natural hedgerows are a long lasting, wildlife friendly and sustainable alternatives to garden fencing. In addition to providing cover and food for nesting birds, hedges left to flower and fruit will also provide a valuable source of food and shelter for other wildlife. Traditional hedgerows contain several different plant varieties like hawthorn, hornbeam and dog rose. Create a wildlife pond - if you have the space, or even if you don’t, a pond or container pond is one of the most wildlife friendly things you can do in your garden. Frogs, toads and newts can be beneficial garden creatures eating a wide range of garden pests and can also be encouraged by providing log piles and other damp habitats. Put up bird nesting boxes - most nest boxes are simply boxes with a hole in the front. The size of the hole will depend on the type of bird you’re trying to attract. Nest boxes are best put up during the autumn when many birds are looking for a suitable place to roost or feed. They often use the same boxes for nesting the following spring. Make sure that birds have a clear flight path to the nest without any clutter directly in front of the entrance and tilt the box forward slightly so that rain can run off. Build a rockery - even a small pile of stones will attract insects and in turn the wildlife that feed on them. A rockery made from garden stones and old house bricks will make a
great shelter for insects and beetles that add to the biodiversity of your wildlife garden. Make a woodpile - it will attract and provide shelter for insects and they in turn will attract insect eating wildlife into your garden. To make a woodpile select a moist shady area under large shrubs or trees, pile logs and dead branches on top of each other and let the wood rot naturally. The wood pile is best left undisturbed because stag beetle larvae that make their home in the wood can take several years to reach maturity. Even though it’s winter and there are leaves and plant debris in the garden resist the temptation to tidy up too much – wildlife likes a bit of mess! As the first frosts arrive, there are still a few jobs to be done before bedding the garden down for winter... Winter is on its way. Leaves are falling rapidly, and wind and rain are on the increase. Tender plants will need protecting from frost, gales and freezing rains. Move plants into the greenhouse, or into a sheltered spot, but if you can’t, it is worth wrapping plants or pots in situ with gardening fleece. Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up. RHS Now is the time to move any tender plants into the greenhouse, conservatory or porch to shelter them as frosts can cause serious damage to plants. You should also protect any delicate or exotic plants from winter weather with straw and hessian on the crown and around the trunk. David Domoney, TV gardener and presenter Plant tulip bulbs in pots and borders and cover them with at least twice their depth of soil or compost. You can continue to mow the lawn in mild spells if the grass is still growing, but raise the height of the blades. Don’t forget to check bonfires carefully before lighting to make sure no hedgehogs or other wildlife are sheltering inside Gardeners’ World

MAKE YOUR BONFIRE NIGHT GO WITH A BANG
THE largest Firework Display in the local area is once more taking place down at Oughtibridge War Memorial Sports Club, and this year has a spooky twist, being on the night after Halloween.
The event on Friday November 1 will be a great evening for all the family with live music from top party band Grove Street, a funfair and a great choice of stalls serving fantastic food throughout the evening. There is an outside bar plus the pavilion will also be open and serving a selection of drinks to suit all. There will be a free to enter children’s fancy dress competition, with a prize for all entrants, so parents can get the most out of those Halloween outfits worn the night before! This year’s display will again be run by award winning Pyro Vision who have performed at the Edinburgh Festival. Admission is from 5pm, with the fancy dress being judged at 7pm and the display is at 8pm prompt. Don’t miss out on this wonderful occasion which gets more and more popular each year. Prices have been frozen for early buyers and tickets are available online at www.owmsc.co.uk or from Oughtibridge Kitchens in the village. SHEFFIELD TIGERS TO RETURN TO SPEEDWAY’S TOP FLIGHT Job Vacancies
The move is confirmed today, underlining the club-owning Bates family and Peter Mole determination to make Sheffield one of the top clubs in the country despite having to endure two difficult seasons when, following their Championship title triumph in 2017, they then crashed to the bottom of the table and this year were forced to move away from their traditional racenight. DELIGHTED Sheffield Tigers are heading back to speedway’s top flight - for the first time in 30 years! And co-boss Damien Bates says moving into the SGB Premiership is the perfect move in what will be an exciting time at the steel city circuit, with key developments off-track as well.

It’s terrific news for one of speedway’s leading clubs and its supporters. Says Bates: “We believe the sport is on the cusp of an exciting time and we want to be a part of it. “We have had some major successes since we took over from Neil Machin in 2014. That was a hard act to follow but we have been delighted with the trophies that have come our way, especially that title win of two years ago which was something special.
“We now feel the time is right to step up, especially with development work at the stadium having now been completed. It’s something we have looked at long and hard and we have assessed all factors in minute detail, so it isn’t a kneejerk reaction, it’s part of a thought-out business strategy. Sustainability has been the key throughout.” The decision was made after long discussions between Bates Family and co-owner Peter Mole. It will mean... * A return to the traditional Thursday race night. Tigers were forced to switched to Sundays in 2019 bringing a mixed reaction from supporters, because the fixed top-flight race days meant Thursday racing wasn’t an option. *Massively improved facilities at Owlerton thanks to the new £5 million conference centre built on the first turn. Speedway fans will be able to use the centre which will have prime viewing areas. It all spells bumper news for the club which has spent almost three decades in the second tier, apart from the amalgamation seasons of 1995 and ‘96. Prior to that, Sheffield raced mostly in the second level until the British League was formed in 1965 and they rode continuously until 1988 when Maurice Ducker’s reign
as promoter ended. The last top flight meeting at Owlerton was in October that year when the Tigers beat Reading 48-41. Added Bates: “Sheffield deserve to be in the Premiership and it’s our intention to make the team a success. “This is now an opportunity to establish the Tigers as a blue chip top-end club. We’re not going into the Premiership to make up the numbers, it would be daft to think that way. “When we’ve done the sums, we know we can assemble a team which will compete all the way. We looked at Ipswich this season and they’ve proved that it can be done. “We’re looking at several riders, including some with the wow factor, but what we won’t do is gamble with the future of the club for a shortterm blast at glory. “The business model we have is all about sustainability, we want to make sure Sheffield Speedway is around next year and the one after that and so on. “The club is now not for sale and will remain in the hands of the current owners as we embark on this exciting time.” Tigers will now start planning on the team front while there will be more from Owlerton as developments unfold.

Under 15s turn the tide on Mosborough ADEPLETED Stocksbridge RUFC under-15 side turned up to fine sunny Sunday morning at Mosborough with 14 players due to a combination of half term holidays, flu and a medical procedure taking it’s toll with six unavailable for a favourite fixture, with the home side having already taken the spoils from the young Pigs on the opening game of the season.
However, the boys in blue showed that it was not only England that could string together an utter dominant performance when the odds were very much against them and even scored in a similar fashion to their heroes in white, nance in the break coming away with a down, counter rucking and powerful 38-21 win. running through the Captain Harry Ryan middle. finished off a sweeping move, scoring un- This saw the quick der the posts in a re- thinking and sniping markable 90 seconds runs from the base for scrum half Josh from the start. The second half saw the opposition raise their game and they caught the Pigs taking their foot off the gas with some deadly accurate cross field kicks to their flying backs and exploit-
The young Pigs thought they had other opportunities over the line but they were deemed not to be by the referee. But the result was never in doubt.
There were a couple more scores and the final say went to the captain with his second, leaving the final score 38-21 to Stocksbridge. The coaches were pleased again with the performance, especially with the lack of players, but are still striving for the

Adverse weather continues to affect golf
THE weather has continued to disrupt the autumn programme at Stocksbridge Golf Club, but there was some play before the weekend heavy rain. Sunday October 20 saw a small field compete for a Pro’s Prize and Nick Wood (13) won the competition with 38 points in the stableford format. Eddie Steele (13) was second with 37 points and Callum Siddons (11) was third with 35 points, pipping Mick Hulbert (12)
who had the same score but a slightly lower points tally on the back nine. The Dragons Section completed the first round of their winter Christmas Cracker Competition. Tony Peers (21) came home victorious with 37 points. Dave Jones (15) was second with 35 points and Dave Broadhurst (17) was third with the same score, but a lower back nine total. The Dragons Summer Cup competition was won by Les Wright, with Dave
Broadhurst in second place and Sandy Murphy in third. As the largest section in the golf club, this is a tremendous achievement by Les and no doubt he will be aiming to achieve the same with the winter competition. Finally, a small and hardy bunch from the Gents Section played in heavy rain on Thursday in the mid-week stableford. Martin Bradwell (19) was the overall winner with a very impressive 40 points.

Nockels breaks club record at Worksop Half Marathon
PENISTONE runner Daren Nockels had a great run at the Worksop Half Marathon. He secured both first in his age category and also captured the club record for over50 male.
Daren’s time was an impressive 1-19-57. Dawn Broom became the first Penistone club member to achieve two first class road standards in two separate age categories. Dawn achieved the feat whilst completing the Wistow 10k in 45-57.
Despite heavy rain the Furty Furlong trail race went ahead on Saturday morning in Mapplewell and Penistone’s Scott Hinchcliffe was a clear winner of the race, finishing in a time of 23-35.
Crampton & Moore Established Retailer in Audio, Video and Electrical Goods
Other Penistone prize winners in various age categories were Alan Knox, Andrea Henson, Ian Sutcliffe, Heather Lindley, Dawn Godley and Helen Fryers. Serial race winner Julie Darigala was the winning lady at the Race You to the Summit fell race. At the same race Sarah Walch had a great run to win the ladies over-40 category. Three hardy Penistone runners took on the challenging Snowdonia Marathon. First back in a new personal best for the course was Rob Davies in a time of 3-28-43. Rob was followed in by Bryan Harrod (3-5039) and Kenny Rowe (5-12-05). The second of the South Yorkshire cross country series took place at Campsall near Doncaster. Although the weather was very pleasant for running the rain put down over the previous days meant conditions were very wet underfoot. Penistone performed strongly in the men’s race with three runners in the top 10. Scott Hinchcliffe was second behind English international runner Andy Heyes and followed in by Kai Sunman (sixth) and Gareth Cooke (10th).
