SCOUT GROUP SEEKS NEW ADULT VOLUNTEERS

ECCLESFIELD Scout Group has been at the centre of life in Ecclesfield for over 100 years.

Established in 1912, the group still prides itself on encouraging young people - these days both boys and girls - to do good things within their community.

The number of young people involved in the Scout Group is as high as ever before. But there is increasingly a challenge to find enough adult volunteers to run the busy program for all the different age groups.

The group were forced to make the difficult decision to merge the group’s two Scout troops, for those aged 10 to 14, in October.

Due to a shortage of adult leaders this was the only way to continue to keep the Scout section running and thankfully resulted in majority of the Scouts remaining within the group.

This created its own challenges as both the Scouts and the leaders got used to the increased numbers on a troop night. With new group dynamics and friendships being formed and the patrols being reorganised.

Despite the recent changes to their group, the Scouts have continued to get on with things, challenge themselves with new activities and support their local community. Their

During the autumn the Scouts planned a sponsored overnight outdoor sleepout without tents for their fundraiser badge. They slept in the open air, sheltered only by cardboard boxes, and raised £500 for Roundabout - a local youth housing charity, which supports young people 16 to 25 who are at risk of homelessness throughout South Yorkshire.

Other recent activities have included the Scouts learning to read train timetables to plan an independent trip to Leeds and Castleton for their Expedition Challenge, building their own go-carts for the district’s annual soap box derby and learning to cook South American meals on an open fire for the outdoor cooking competition.

The Scouts also chose not to have a Halloween Party, instead they took part in ‘Trick or Eat’ -where instead of Trick or Treating the Scouts spent their Halloween evening collecting food for St Saviour’s Food Bank in High Green.

This followed on from earlier in the year planning and running a ‘Time for Tea’ coffee and cake party for parents and family members, which raised £250 for Weston Park Cancer Charity.

Helping others is always something the Scouts get really passionate about, with the list of charities the young people want to support being as long as the list of Scouts.

The hardest part is deciding which events and charities the group are able to support. This is all part of a balanced programme which looks to ensure the Scouts develop skills

Ecclesfield Scout Group continues to look for new adult volunteers and would very much welcome any enthusiast and responsible adults who would be willing to give some time to help out each week to support the current troop on a Thursday evening and in the long term they would like to re-open their second troop on a Tuesday evening.

In the meantime, the Scouts are already looking forward to the new decade of Scouting, where they will continue to learn new skills, have fun and find new ways to support their local community.

Local primary school kids dream of Wembley FOOTBALLERS from local primary schools are dreaming of the chance to play on the hallowed Wembley turf as they prepare to take part in the EFL Kids Cup. Each season the EFL organises the Kids Cup competition for junior footballers from schools across the country, with the finals being played in the buildup to some of the biggest matches of the domestic season – the Championship play-off final.

The Kids Cup comprises of a sixa-side competition for under-11 school children and culminates in three finals across the EFL Play-Off weekends in May. But for now, teams must battle it out at a regional level to reach the finals. Every club in the Championship, League One and League Two host the first round of the competition and Sheffield Wednesday’s Community Programme are to hold their competition on Wednesday January 22.

The winners of that competition will go on to represent Wednesday in each of the next rounds and hopefully end up in the final, like Greenhill School did in 2017.

A number of schools from the north of the city are to be involved this time around, including Lound, Meynell, Windmill Hill, Mansell and Wharncliffe Side. We wish them all the best of luck!

MEMORIAL HELD FOR FORGOTTEN MILITARY HERO

A VOLUNTEER group for a Victorian graveyard held a celebration to commemorate 200 years since the birth of a war hero.

Buried at Wardsend Cemetary in Hillsborough, Lieutenant George Lambert VC was a highly decorated soldier who rose to the rank of lieutenant and received a Victoria Cross.

He spent much of service as a soldier in India. Lambert was awarded his Victoria Cross (V.C.) for service during The Indian Campaign, as noted on a memorial to him in Mullaghbrack Church, County Armagh, where he grew up.

Six members of Lambert’s regiment were awarded V.C.s during this campaign; only 1,356 of these have ever been awarded as of June 2010.

Two years after returning from active service, Lieutenant Lambert died on February 10 1860, after he collapsed on the parade ground at Hillsborough Barracks.

Lambert’s funeral was conducted with military honours, and was reported in the local papers.

His funeral took place on Thursday, at the St. Philip’s burial ground. The ceremony was conducted with military

honours, the band of the regiment marching at the head of the procession, and playing the ‘Dead March’ in Saul.

Most of the deceased’s brother officers were present and his charger was led after the body, bearing his master’s boots reversed. The usual volleys were fired over his grave at the conclusion of the service, and the procession then returned to the barracks.

His death was caused by the breaking of a blood vessel whilst on the parade ground of the barracks. He had been somewhat unwell for several weeks, but not so seriously as to cause any apprehension, or to prevent him from fulfilling a part of his duties. He had risen from the ranks, having been in the service about 18 years, and had earned his honours in India.

The location of Lambert’s grave fell out of popular memory for many years, but was rediscovered March 15 1993 by D. Scott and F. Westwood.

On Saturday December 14, at Maj. Ian Bunting’s invitation, a memorial service was held to remember George and the bravery for which he was awarded the VC.

Your Letters Christmas thanks YVONNE’S Hair Salon on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, acted as a drop-off point for the Hallam FM Mission Christmas Cash for Kids campaign.

On December 23, I was one of the cars involved in the crash that closed the road between Stocksbridge and Deepcar. My wife, my sister and I were helped initially by a local first responder called Zoe, who stopped when she saw the crash.

Yvonne would like to thank everyone that contributed so generously - they had 850 presents donated, which is the largest amount donated in the local area. It took three van loads and a car to deliver them to Mission Christmas HQ!

My wife suffered severe bruising but was otherwise OK. I would like to thank all those that helped, what a great job they do.

The salon takes part in the scheme every year and has seen some fantastic contributions in recent times.

She was a great help as my sister was in shock and she stayed with her for nearly an hour. When the paramedic arrived he advised my sister and I to go to the Northern General Hospital by ambulance.

I don’t thank the vehicle that ran into me as he never came across the road to ask how we were - maybe he was in shock.

Defibrillators fitted in village Continued from front page This was beyond all expectation and meant that they were able to site a second CPAD which is sited at the old Daisy Chain Nursery, and with plans for it to be re-sited at the new co-op on Langsett Road and also donate a third to the local primary school. The team sourced long term guardians and owners.

Oughtibridge Wesleyan Reform Chapel have now taken ownership of the two CPADs, they hold a ring-fenced fund which is used for ongoing costs of maintenance, replacement pads, batteries and insurance.

The cause has had great support from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service charity, who provided three community first aid awareness sessions and a defibrillator awareness session to educate the community around basic life support and defibrillation.

The £999 team would like to give thanks to Mohamed A Patel of M&A Chemist and Debbie Beetlestone, former manager of Daisy Chain for giving permission for the fitting of these life saving defibrillators.

A spokesperson for the team said: “We hope that the defibrillators never have to be used, but having them available is a great achievement.

“Sudden cardiac failure is the leading cause of premature death in the UK, but many lives can be saved with immediate treatment.

Fast access defibrillation and good quality bystander CPR are the two biggest factors in survival rates of out of hospital cardiac arrest.

“The chance of survival is dramatically increased if a defibrillator can shock the heart quickly, while an ambulance is on route.

This chance of survival decreases seven to 10% for every minute that defibrillation is not available.

“CPADs are defibrillators placed in public places accessible 24 hours a day. The defibrillators are placed in a locked cabinet, when a caller calls 999 they can be sent to that box. The device can be used while the Ambulance is on route increasing chances of a successful resuscitation.”

New Year weight-loss tips for a Slimmer 2020

Local Slimming World Team Developer shares her secrets

Donna Cutts, who is one of Slimming Worlds Team Developers in Sheffield and has been with Slimming World for 10 years, says: “With the rise of trendy fad diets, people are often seduced by the promise of fast weight losses and take quick-fix routes to lose weight. However, these methods of weight loss aren’t sustainable – after all, who wants to feel hungry all the time or give up their favourite foods indefinitely? Especially when that often means that by February New Year’s resolutions are a distant memory.

“Last year Slimming World has celebrated it’s 50th anniversary and since it was founded in 1969 it’s helped millions of people to reach their dream weight. There’s no magic pill when it comes to weight loss and the best weight-loss plan is the one you can stick to.

Our members lose weight by making small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat and filling up on Free Food – foods that are low in calories but satisfying like pasta, lean meat, fruit, veg, potatoes and more – so they don’t have to go hungry or give up their favourite meals, as well as gradually becoming more active and getting bucketloads of support along the way. They develop healthy habits that they can keep up for life, so they can not only reach their target weight but stay there forever.

However, with Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, members are encouraged to make small and simple swaps like switching from oil to low-calorie cooking spray and

RARE DEFENSIVE ERRORS COST CHURCH UNCHARACTERISTIC defensive mistakes were to blame for Penistone Church’s away defeat at Bridlington Town on Saturday, as they lost 4-3 in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division.

Church fell behind after just nine minutes as Tom Waudby found a way through for the home side.

Nathan Keightley pulled one back for Church but just four minutes later, Billy Logan put Bridlington back in front.

Keightley is in great form at the moment and levelled the scores on the stroke of half time.

But the restart saw the game swing back in the favour of the home side with Waudby grabbing his second. Chris Adams made it 4-2 on 56 minutes and despite Andy Ring grabbing a consolation in the dying stages of the contest, Church were unable to find another goal.

Church manager Ian Richards said: “First of all, a happy New Year to everybody - especially to the eighty plus who travelled to Bridlington to come and watch us today, a huge thank you to those, it reflects the support and backing we’re getting from people.

DRY WEATHER HELPS GOLFERS GET BACK ON THE COURSE THROUGH the Christmas period and into January, Stocksbridge golfers have been enjoying some much dryer and calmer weather conditions.

The course has dried out significantly and given the keen golfers of the club a chance to work off some of the Christmas excesses.

As a result, the winter competitions have resumed and been well supported by playing members of the club.

The first competition to report on was the Stableford Pro’s Prize on December 28. Steve Cain (16) won with an impressive 43 points and completed a round with no sixes on his card, a rare feat for middle handicap golfers.

In third place was Dave Stringer (14) with 41 points as well, but a slightly lower points score on the back nine.

In second was Richard Hastings (19) with 41 points, in a round with two birdies. In third place was Eddie Smith (20) with 40 points.

Earlier in December, Stocksbridge Golf Club had the pleasure of hosting newly elected Penistone and Stocksbridge MP. Miriam Cates, the first Conservative MP in the constituency since the 1930s.

Miriam enjoyed a post-election party at the club with many of her local Conservative Association team. Miriam lives

in the area and along with her constituency team was determined to celebrate the election, irrespective of the result.

Choosing Stocksbridge Golf Club was an easy decision to ensure that the celebrations were held within the boundary. The club was more than willing to host the event and around 100 guests attended the party.
