ROAD CHAOS AS PEDESTRIAN DIES THERE were multiple incidents on the roads this week, with a Sheffield man unfortunately losing his life in one of them.

Traffic officers are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage following a fatal collision on the M1 Southbound on Monday January 20. At around 5.30am, police received reports of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian between Junction 36 and Junction 35A on the M1 Southbound. The pedestrian, a 62-year-old man, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. The M1 has been re-opened following an investigation at the scene. Police are asking anyone who saw the collision, or anyone

who may have dashcam footage to contact them.

penalty notices and some cars were seized.

Please call 101 quoting incident number 96 of 20 January 2020 if you can help.

HMRC checked all the vehicles for red diesel, three were found to be using the diesel and were issued fixed penalty notices.

Also on Monday, there was a 10-vehicle collision on the A616/A628 at the Flouch roundabout. This caused some significant delays in the area whilst we recovered the vehicles and tidied up. Operation Duxford has also been in operation in the area. Barnsley’s Neighbourhood Teams were supported by roads policing officers, Barnsley Council, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) were at a site on A61 in Tankersley, on Wednesday January 15. The teams stopped 43 vehicles. A total of 14 were served fixed

Sgt Darrell Needham from the Barnsley West Neighbourhood Team, who also co-ordinated the day of action said: “Operation Voyager is about disrupting criminals use of our road networks, as well as ensuring drivers are abiding by the conditions of their driving licence. “As well as having a static site in operation we also had officers patrolling the roads and stopping vehicles. Officers stopped 18 vehicles and seized two for insurance offences. “Two arrests were also made following warrants being executed across Barnsley and proactive patrols. I would like to thank the officers and partners who supported the operation.”

POLICE WARN OF BOGUS CALLERS AFTER ALLEGED SCAMS SOUTH Yorkshire Police officers are urging people in north Sheffield to be vigilant following two incidents in which a group of men have reportedly tried to con elderly residents out of large amounts of cash. The first incident occurred on Tuesday January 14, when a group of three or four men approached the home of a 87-year-old man in High Greave, Ecclesfield, between 12 and 2.30pm. They asked if he wanted his gutters cleaning, saying it would cost £20. They then advised his roof needed repairing at a cost of £2,000. The victim went to the post office to withdraw additional cash and handed over £1,500. The men said they would return the next day for the other £500. No work has

been done and the men did not return. The men are described as wearing blue uniforms and were driving a white van with ladders. In the second incident, on Thursday January 16, a 67year-old man from West Quadrant, Firth Park went to the post office to withdraw £1,000. When concerned staff challenged him, he said the money was to pay for some work being done on his drive. Officers attended his address to do a ‘safe and well’ check. The builders had gone and had left no contact details. Had any work been done? The men were all described as having Irish accents. Sergeant Scott Sarson said: “While there are differences in these incidents, we are

treating them as potentially linked and would urge residents to report any similar incidents to us. “Please be vigilant and be mindful of anyone offering to do work who does not seem genuine. “If you have elderly friends of relatives who you think could be vulnerable to incidents like this, please talk to them and ask them to call us to report anything suspicious.” Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 609 of 14 January 2020. THE Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team was called out today at 1.09pm on Sunday January 19 to assist Yorkshire Ambulance Service at Upper Midhope. A lady whilst out walking slipped and sustained a lower leg injury and was unable to continue. The casualty was packaged onto our stretcher for a short carry to our team Land Rover and driven back to the road head to the waiting ambulance.

THE heavy rain and flooding of November has been a strong reminder that areas of Sheffield and Rotherham are still at risk. Climate change forecasts are telling us we can expect extreme weather events more frequently in future. Protecting Sheffield and Rotherham in years to come will undoubtedly require a range of actions. Amongst those actions is increased work to develop the existing capacity of the countryside, to slow the flow and hold water back. The Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership, with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Environment Agency, is working with land owners and tenant farmers above the Little Don, Rivelin and Loxley Rivers on a range of Natural Flood Management projects. Anthony Downing, coordinator of partnership projects for the Environment Agency in the Don Catchment, told us: “We’re really pleased to be involved in the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership. It’s fantastic to see local organisations working together to improve the environment and reduce flood risk using natural flood management techniques. “Natural flood management can be a costeffective and sustainable way to manage flood risk alongside traditional engineering, while also creating habitat for wildlife and helping regenerate rural and urban areas through tourism. Natural flood management is a developing area. We hope to use the valuable experience and knowledge the partners are gaining in this project to develop further projects of its type.” David Renwick, Director of England North, at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “As we have seen in recent times, extreme weather is not always a stranger to us in the UK. Projects like the natural flood management measures being undertaken as part of the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership scheme will help to not only reduce the flood risk to local communities, but can also

aid habitat creation and cultural regeneration in the area. “At The National Lottery Heritage Fund we are pleased to be able to invest in projects that will yield such a positive impact for the areas within Sheffield Lakeland.” The Sheffield Lakeland Partnership Coordinator, Keith Tomkins, is a full convert to Natural Flood Management but feels there is a long way to go before it meets even a fraction of its potential: “Natural Flood Management undoubtedly has a role to play in the suite of actions we have available to us, but we need to consider it at a landscape scale. A few new wet areas, improved hedgerows or areas of tree planting may help, but the benefits are easily negated by a loss of habitat and inappropriate use of land in the same landscape. Where you see curlew and lapwing, these areas are also likely to be where water is absorbed and stored. Currently we have a double challenge as these birds decline due loss of habitat and the reduction of capacity of the land to help slow the flow.” Nabil Abbas, Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust Working with Water Project Officer, who is leading on the delivery of this work said: “The countryside has the capacity to soak up water and to hold it in pools, soils and plants, releasing it again slowly. This means that heavy rainfall does not immediately flow across the surface and into our rivers. We are identifying places that are already providing us with this service and working with farmers and other land owners to protect and improve them. As well as helping to hold water these places are also where wildlife thrives. As an example, on one of the sites we have been working on, we discovered a colony of water vole.” Water vole is one of six species being supported by National Lottery Players via the Local Conservation Action Plan (LCAP). Other species of the list include; barn owl, bat, goshawk, osprey and willow tit. Community tea party TWO years ago, Ecclesfield School decided to do its best to help combat loneliness and social isolation by holding a Community Tea Party. The inaugural event was a huge success and is now an important part of the school curriculum in health and social care. Sian Staveley, curriculum leader of health and social care at the school, said that the inter-generational event was beneficial for everyone and that there were huge health and social benefits.

Guests are treated to a delicious afternoon tea and live entertainment. At the next event on Wednesday January 29, there will be live music from ‘A Class Act’, a local 15 piece band, which is back once again by popular demand. The Tea Party has been kindly sponsored by Morrisons of Ecclesfield. The event offers a wonderful opportunity for people to meet old/make new friends, to socialise, to dine and to have a dance. Everyone is more than welcome to come along. It is

also ‘dementia friendly’ and therefore ideal for those living with dementia and their families/carers. Headteacher of Ecclesfield School, Richard Walkden, said: “This is what Ecclesfield School is all about, the students and the community working together. The students love these days and it is a joy to see the collaboration amongst all parts of society.” Tickets are just a minimum £5 donation. To book, please call the school on 0114 246 1156.

Company ordered to pay £230,000 after Crow Edge fire

WOOD recycling company R Plevin & Sons Limited (PLEVINS) has been fined £200,000 at Sheffield Crown Court in a successful prosecution by the Environment Agency. The company was also ordered to pay £30,000 prosecution costs in addition to the fine following a series of environmental incidents during 2014. The company was prosecuted after a major fire at its Barnsley wood recycling centre in 2014 led to the pollution of a local river, the temporary closure of a sewage treatment works and smoke affecting homes 20 miles away in Sheffield. Prosecuting for the Environment Agency, James Puzey told the court that PLEVINS has operated at the Wavin Complex at Hazlehead, Crow Edge near Barnsley since April 2013. The company shreds up to 150,000 tonnes of waste wood each year to remove contaminants, for the purposes of creating a biomass fuel, which it is contracted to supply to EON’s biomass energy plant at Blackburn Meadows, Sheffield. In PLEVINS case, its environmental permit required the company to have detailed working plans to manage the risk of environmental harm. This included obligations to comply with mandatory guidance on the maximum size of stockpiles of waste wood, which in sufficient quantities can self-combust if not properly managed. After a fire in April 2014, concerns were expressed to the company by the Environment Agency about its management of the incident and its fire prevention and incident response plans. The Environment Agency subsequently demanded that changes

and improvements be made to bring the site into compliance with the conditions of its environmental permit. This included the requirement to produce a detailed incident management plan and limit the size of stock piles of waste wood, which were found to be in excess of the maximum limits allowed. Despite this, in June 2014 a second large fire occurred lasting 13 days. It was caused by self-combustion of the waste wood stockpiles. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service described it as its largest resource commitment for over 11 years, using an average of 45 personnel at any one time, at a cost of over £500,000. The large amount of water used to tackle the blaze drained into two offsite lagoons managed by the company. The Environmental permit required this to be contained to prevent this fire water run off entering Sledbrook Dyke and the River Don. Despite this, appropriate action was not taken and water contaminated by the fire was allowed to escape into the gardens of nearby residents and the dyke. This led to pollution of the watercourse and caused the nearby Yorkshire Water sewage treatment works to be put out of action due to the pollution of incoming water from the combined sewer. Two months later in August 2014, the Environment Agency instructed the company to take action to prevent further contaminated fire water entering the Sledbrook Dyke. Despite this, an additional discharge occurred over several days. Representing the company, Andrew Thomas QC said that the company’s culpability for the incidents shouldn’t be determined by using hindsight,

Award success for family run car dealership

and he heavily criticised the Environment Agency for the delay in bringing the prosecution. But in passing sentence, Judge Robert Moore said that the risks of selfcombustion in stacks of waste wood were well known, and that the company had been guilty of a deliberate failure to put in place systems which would have avoided commission of the offences. Environment Agency Environmental Crime Officer, Edward Betts, said: “PLEVINS systems for addressing the known risk of a self-heating combustion on site were wholly inadequate. It received an unmistakeable warning with the fire that occurred in April 2014. The Defendant did not act on that warning before the second fire sufficiently or at all. Its response to the second fire was to look to the Fire Service and the Environment Agency for direction, initiative and resources. After the second fire it failed to address the polluted waters sitting in its lagoons and it failed to reduce its stack sizes as required. “Failure to comply with the legal requirements of an environmental permit is a serious offence that can damage the environment, undermine those who adhere to the rules and cause misery for local communities and we welcome the sentence handed down today, which demonstrates that blatant disregard for environmental regulations will not be tolerated.” On 31 July 2019, the company pleaded guilty to two Environmental Permitting regulation offences: operating in breach of their permit, and causing a polluting discharge to occur which was not in accordance with a permit.

A Sheffield based; family run car dealership is celebrating after being crowned as the best in the UK. The Eric Stead MG team attended the annual MG Dealer Conference in London alongside 102 other dealers and was crowned Rhodium Aftersales Dealer of the Year. The dealership was crowned winners due to its high-quality levels of customer service time and time again. The Rhodium Aftersales Dealer of the Year was one of seven prominent awards to be presented in London last week with three in sales, three in aftersales and one for an all-rounder.

Simon Stead, former speedway rider and joint team manager of the Great Britain speedway team, was on hand to accept the award at St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel on behalf of his family and the team at the dealership. Simon said: “To pick up yet another prestigious award from MG, against some majorly tough competition is testament to the dedicated, hardworking and approachable team we have at Eric Stead. “We have been in the industry since 1964 offering both new and used vehicles and from that day to this, we have built up a reputation for extraordinary customer care and

service, which has formed the foundation of the business. As an family run, independent dealership - without our loyal customer base we wouldn’t be able to carry on doing what we love – thank you.” This latest accolade comes after the dealership won two awards last year as a runner up in the top dealership category and for having the best service manager in the UK in Paul Carr! PROFESSIONAL, HONEST AND SINCERE

It’s not too late to make a Will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

The aim of Friends of Oxley Park Group is to improve the facilities at the park with the view to having a positive impact on health and wellbeing within the community. THE Sheffield City Region devolution deal was agreed on January 15 by the Mayor and all four Leaders and will now proceed to public consultation. Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “We are very pleased to have got to the point where we can do this devolution deal. We have always been clear that this is the best deal for the people of Sheffield and the wider city region, and will also be the key to opening further doors to access more funding from different sources. “This is a deal for people, in particular young people across Sheffield and South Yorkshire, and it will enable us to invest in their skills and equip them to take jobs in growing sectors. It’s about investing in infrastructure, including transport links, and supporting local businesses to become good employers and provide jobs. But at the heart of all this is investment in the future for people who live, work and learn in Sheffield. Statement on devolution from Mayor Dan Jarvis, Cllr Julie Dore, Cllr Steve Houghton, Mayor Ros Jones and Cllr Chris Read: “We’re pleased to announce that the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local

THE NEW YEAR IS A GREAT TIME TO IMPROVE YOUR HOME

DIY JOBS THAT BRITS WON’T TACKLE:

* Fixing a dripping tap

* Putting on a new toilet seat

* Painting a room

* Re-tiling the bathroom

* Hanging wallpaper

* Putting up a shelf

* Hanging a picture

* Hanging a door

* Changing a plug

* Filling in a crack in the wall

* Assembling flatpack furniture

* Cleaning out the guttering

* Fitting a new light

* Paint / varnish a fence

MANY people vow to learn vital new skills and become amateur home DIYers themselves as part of their New Year’s resolutions.

and gardening skills and know-how are lost forever.

“We have been concerned that as a nation, we haven‘t been passing DIY skills on to the next generation and this research confirms the urgent need for our ‘Pass it On‘ campaign. Many adults are lacking the basics and it‘s our role as market leader to help re-educate the nation and encourage, inspire and enable generations to pass on those DIY skills in 2018 and beyond.

Researchers polled 1,500 Brits and discovered that 35 percent of Sheffield residents have resigned themselves to being hopeless around the house, with a further 20 percent admitting they have never put up a shelf and 16 percent insist they can’t even change a plug. A further 28 percent said they still ask their parents to come over to help out with practical tasks including putting up wallpaper, painting a wall or fixing a broken toilet seat. Of those polled from Sheffield, 22 percent said they have tried and tried but have given up ever being able to master basic home maintenance. The research showed that six in ten respondents said that as a nation, Brits have lost the art of DIY and over a third of Sheffield adults feel immense pressure to be able to perform basic home improvements – but can’t. Bosch Home and Garden feels this is now the perfect time to address these issues before DIY

To coincide with the launch of the Pass It On campaign and as part of the nation‘s New Year’s resolutions for 2018, it has introduced a new inspiration hub, allaboutdiy.com to help pass on essential DIY and gardening knowledge and skills to consumers. It provides expert step-by-step guides, DIY advice for learning new skills, as well as detailed projects to encourage people to make items for themselves and give them the confidence they need to get hands on. The poll also revealed 65 percent have never attempted to tile a bathroom, over one third couldn’t fix a dripping tap and 18 percent would be clueless about fitting a toilet seat. In addition, 55 percent of all adults have never had a stab at cleaning out the guttering. Ironically 92 percent of Sheffield adults have a toolbox with an average of £306 worth of tools and equipment gathering dust in our houses. A spokesperson for Bosch Home and Garden, which commissioned the study said:

‘‘By pledging to learn a new skill or sharing an existing one, we’re encouraging people to pass on their DIY knowledge and expertise to generations to come so that the nation can be proud of their own home improvements and gain that sense of satisfaction and personal achievement.“ The poll found the average Sheffield resident calls in help three times a year with 16 percent feeling awful for having to rely on elderly parents to tackle their home improvements. Almost one quarter admitted to never learning any practical skills from their parents or grandparents and over half said the previous generation was far more practically minded than they are.

Over a third of those studied said they have experienced a DIY disaster, with 57 percent confessing to taking a chance and just drilling through a wall. It’s no wonder then that almost one quarter of Sheffield adults pay a professional tradesman to tackle their home improvements and 11 percent pay a friend to get their hands dirty. Over a third confess to just trying to muddle through by doing the odd job themselves and a laid back 17 percent claim that nothing ever gets done in their home and they are happy to leave it to rack and ruin. To help kickstart gaining those essential DIY and gardening skills and make it part of your New Year’s resolutions, take a look at allaboutdiy.com and get inspired. This DIY hub will help you find step-by-step guides, DIY hints and tips, inspirational project ideas and seasonal projects. If you already have the skills and feel able to help others by passing on that knowledge and know-how, then get in touch through our Facebook page and share your expertise.

ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM KITCHEN OR BATHROOM HERE at John Longley Kitchens and Bathrooms we have been reflecting on some of the stunning projects that we were lucky to be a part of last year. One of those that we were most proud of working on was an exciting project with a specific brief. It was different because it was a traditional yet contemporary kitchen where the couple knew exactly what they wanted in terms of style of cabinet, colours/finishes and appliances. Tim worked very closely with the customers and installation team to achieve their dream kitchen which the customers were extremely pleased with. The thank you card reflected how they felt about the project: "Tim was a pleasure to work with and gave us the confidence to do something different. A good designer needs a good team of tradesmen to follow the plans and you have the best." John Longley’s now offer more choices in kitchens and bathrooms to suit a range of different budgets. We are excited to cater for traditional tastes with shaker style kitchens and curved units now available.

At the moment, we currently have ex display items for sale and an early bird promotion on four specially selected kitchen ranges. Customers can also choose from a new colour range from the signature German collection, including Nero Oak, industrial tones and the new Easy Touch range offers anti fingerprint finishes. Anyone who chooses John Longley’s can be sure that we will work closely with you to understand your needs and create your ideal kitchen or bathroom. Achieving your dream kitchen or bathroom is now even easier than you might think as you can buy now and spread the cost. We’ve teamed-up with Ideal4Finance who provide loans for all purposes including home improvements such as new kitchens and bathrooms, at competitive rates too. Ask in store for details. For more information call 248766 or visit John Longley Longley Kitchen&Bathrooms Facebook page or www.jslongley.co.uk.

BARELY a week after it was broken by Gareth Cooke at the Brass Monkey Half Marathon, Gary Briscoe broke the Penistone senior male club record for the half marathon distance. Gary’s time of 1-10-11 also gave him his first race win on a foggy and icy Sunday morning at the Inskip half in Lancashire. Also in Lancashire, Julia Johnson competed in the Mast 10k in Bolton. Julia had a great

race and was third lady back in a time of 5022. Some of Penistone’s younger athletes competed in the Sheffield Open Cross Country event. Graihagh Turner was fifth in the under-11 girls category in a time of 6-27. Jenson Sykes was 16th in the under-11 boys race in 14-07. In the same race Flynn Rogers had an outstanding run to gain third place in a time of 11-22.

On the fells Bernice Nixon claimed another first place in the women’s over-60 category at the Lamb’s Longer fell race in Hayfield. Results: Mast Race 10K // 19 Jan. Ranking: 27, Julia Johnson 50-22. CHURCH MARCH ON IN CUP AND LEAGUE

Local Sport ERNEST THORPE

PENISTONE Church made strides in both cup and league competitions this week, knocking Worksop Town out of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup quarter finals via penalty shootout before beating Albion Sports 3-1 away from home in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division. Church were 2-0 up after 25 minutes against Worksop but a strike from Connor Brunt and a late goal from Ben Rhodes saw the game go into extra time.

MOT’s £35.00

But it was Church who held their nerve to winning a nailbiting shootout with the Nick Firth Tiles Man of the Match award going to towering centre half Brett Lovell.

Mon - Fri 8.30 am - 5.00pm Sat 8.30 am - 12.00 noon

There was to be no such drama on Saturday against Albion, with Ryan Johnson, Ash Ellis and Nathan Keightley giving Church a commanding lead.

Although Sam Pashley pulled a goal back late on, the win never looked in any doubt. Manager Ian Richards said after the game: “After the efforts on Wednesday today was a brilliant result and a really effective performance. “This was a much more important game than Wednesday. This is fundamentally our priority number one, this is what we are trying to achieve to get promoted and today these are places where you come and you can lose points, one; because Albion Sports are a very quick attacking side and two; due no to fault of Albion Sports the pitch is in a poor state because two team play a large amount of games and because of the weather we’ve had it was very boggy, cut up very easily, it was very difficult to play any type of football on.” Man of the match Brett Lovell

STEAD GOES THREE FOR THREE IN AUSTRAILA SIMON Stead made it three wins out of three as Great Britian boss with a second successive victory over Australia in Perth on Saturday. Skipper Tai Woffinden was again the star of the show roaring to another maximum - this time reeling off five straight wins to lead Great Britain to backto-back victories at Pinjar Park. Stead said: “All the lads deserve great credit for what they have achieved here, they have done everything right and I’m proud of them. “It’s been a brilliant experience for them and credit the Australian boys too, good for them to race against riders who are based in Europe. “We must say thanks to everyone who has made this happen, people have invested in this project and I

see it as a big step forward for the GB Speedway team.

“I’d love to see this made into an annual event, it would be great to do it again next year and it’s given everyone a taste of competitive action ahead of the new season now.” The opening heat of the night saw Woffinden team up with Drew Kemp to get the visitors off to the perfect start - hitting the pairings third maximum over the two meetings. Back-to-back shared heats followed with Jack Smith picking up his first points of the weekend with victory in Heat 3. Peterborough legend Jason Crump made it two wins out of two in another shared heat with his British counterpart Woffinden winning the following heat to remain unbeaten. Woffinden then won the battle of the unbeaten duo

in Heat 8 with Kemp getting the better of Kale Ballantyne to restore their four-point lead at the halfway stage. Jack Smith’s upturn in form continued as he partnered Belle Vue star Dan Bewley to extend GB’s lead to ten points with just three heats remaining. Another two maximums for Stead’s side in the remaining three heats sealed victory in style as Woffinden and Bewley held off Crump and Cameron Heeps for a fourth maximum of the night. Australia 36: Jason Crump 10, Cameron Heeps 9, Fraser Bowes 7+2, Dakota Ballantyne 7, Daniel Winchester 2+2, Kale Ballantyne 1. Great Britain 54: Tai Woffinden 15, Dan Bewley 12+1, Jack Smith 11+2, Drew Kemp 8+1, Leon Flint 5+2, Jason Edwards 3+2.

THREE UNBEATEN FOR STEELS Stocksbridge Park Steels FC 3 Wisbech Town FC 1

STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels made it three games unbeaten with this win against Wisbech Town at the Look Local Stadium last Saturday.

were awarded a penalty which Mangham dispatched with aplomb to give them the lead at the break They extended that lead early in the second half when Scott Ruthven scored his 15th goal of the season from midfield.

Wisbech started the game strongly and the Steels defence had to be alert in the first 10 minutes but marshalled by captain Liam Mcfadyen they remained calm and collected. When Stocksbridge started to get the ball down and play the football they are capable of they looked a threat.

Chances went begging to put the game to bed and when Wisbech pulled a goal back it looked like it might cost Steels the full points. But Josh Nodder produced a sublime finish to curl a shot into the bottom corner to settle any nerves.

Lewis Whitham produced a great cross from the right hand side and Mangham put in a great leap at the far post only to see the keeper produce a great save to keep his header out.

That win makes it seven points from the last nine available and Steels are only three points off a play off place. They now face two away games before returning to the Look Local Stadium on February 1.

But it wasn’t long before Mangham got on the score sheet when Steels
