SMITHY WOOD SAVED AS SERVICES PLANS ARE WITHDRAWN LESS than a month after the Woodland Trust stepped up their campaign against plans for a motorway service area near Sheffield that would have destroyed irreplaceable ancient woodland, the charity is welcoming the news that the plan has been withdrawn. Under the proposals from Extra Motorway Services, at least four hectares of the centuries-old Smithy Wood would have been bulldozed to make way for new services alongside the M1 at junction 35. Speaking after the withdrawal of the plans, Woodland Trust lead campaigner Jack Taylor said: “We are delighted that the application been withdrawn after six years of dogged determination and campaigning by the Trust and the local community. Smithy Wood is - for now at least - safe from development and will continue to provide a rich habitat

for ancient woodland flowers, birds and mammals. “Our most recent online campaign to fight the proposal, asking Sheffield City Council to reject the application resulted in over 3,400 objections. We are thrilled and relieved that our campaign, and those of others meant the developer saw sense to withdraw. “The Woodland Trust will not waiver in its support for ancient woodland and should any other proposal for this site materialise we stand ready to fight again.” The Woodland Trust were also keen to thank local campaigners who have worked so tirelessly to save the wood, including Sheffield Environmental, Cowley Residents Action Group, Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust and former MP Angela Smith.

Although happy about the news, Liz Ballard, Chief Executive of Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, was keen to make the point that the fight was not over just yet. She said: “This is really fantastic news, working with local residents at Cowley, we have been fighting to save this woodland for seven years. “We had an incredible amount of support from hundreds of people across Sheffield answering our call to join our peaceful protest, write letters and submit objections. So this is down to everyone who took action to help Save Smithy Wood – thank you! “But this is not the end. For this wood to be saved for local people and wildlife we now ask St Pauls as land owners to work with us so that we can secure this woodland for future generations to enjoy.”

YOUNG HEAVY METAL FAN OUT TO PROVE HIS STEEL TALENTED musician Jack Haigh,14, from Silkstone Common has been shortlisted in a prestigious national competition to find the UK’s best young drummer. Jack, alongside nine other finalists all aged 16 years and under, will take part in the annual competition to showcase the talents of the top young drummers from all over the UK. The Young Drummer of the Year contest was developed by drum educator and influencer Mike Dolbear and producer and industry manager Ade Holbrook and is something that percussionist Jack has aspired to for many years. Having started learning to play the drums through Barnsley Music Service aged just six, music has played a huge part in Jack’s life as he worked his way up through various ensembles and bands across Yorkshire. Although Jack’s musical passion lies with heavy metal music, his ability to play a wide range of musical styles has seen him play in venues

up and down the country including The Albert Hall in London and as far away as Belgium and Germany. Jack said: “I’m so pleased to have been placed in the top ten and can’t wait to perform on stage in the final. “It’s like a dream come true to have come so far and I’m just going to go out there, play my best and do what I love.” Attracting large numbers of entrants and a star studded cast of judges from the musical field, The Young Drummer of the Year has been at the forefront of the drumming community since its inception into the mainstream music calendar 19 years ago. Past finalists and winners include Matty Brown (Stormzy/Plan B/ Little Mix), Josh Devine (One Direction) and Paul Stanley Mckenzie (Damon Albarn/Eliza Doolittle). The event, open to the public, will take place on Sunday February 2 at the Artrix Arts Centre in Bromsgrove. Doors open at 1.30pm and the show will start at 2pm.

PLANS SUBMITTED FOR FORMER SWIMMING BATHS PLANS have been submitted to build 11 semi-detached homes on the land that Chapeltown Baths used to occupy.

In April of last year, planning permission was approved for the building of a block, between two and four storeys in height, of 32 one and two bedroom apartments. However, architects Coda Studios, acting on behalf of Eyre Investments, have revisited the development and have now submitted the new plans for

the 11 homes with three to four bedrooms each.

Chris Carr Architects said in a statement: “The site, which is currently derelict and unused, was, prior to its demolition, the site of the Chapeltown Baths. There have been numerous apartment blocks built in Chapeltown during recent years and there are a number of other similar proposals for the area. “The applicants have re-visited their development appraisal for the site and believe that the

market is already well supplied with apartments and that there is currently a healthy demand for traditional family houses. “All new houses have three to four bedrooms with generous living space and most have private garages. All new dwellings have spacious gardens and are set within a heavily landscaped site.” The baths closed in February 2016 after serving the community for around 50 years and since then, the land has been unused.

Over £160,000 in emergency payments made to flooded households across South Yorkshire OVER 800 households have received emergency payments from local charity South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation (SYCF) to help support those affected meet their most urgent needs. The £200 payments have gone to all affected households who applied, with the aim of alleviating the immediate pressures experienced by those hit by the destructive flooding in November 2019. SYCFworking in partnership with each local authority area, is now about to launch its next phase of payments designed to support

those most vulnerable and worst affected by the flooding. Households with children under five, elderly residents over 70, uninsured and/or low income households are just some of those who will be able to apply to this new phase of funding which will be awarding much larger grant awards. This new phase is designed to help cover the cost of a range of essentials such as flood damage repairs, replacing kitchen cabinets, white goods, replacing flooring furniture and decorations in affected rooms. Ruth Willis, Chief Executive of SYCF said: “Our priority with this

next phase of funding is to help those impacted by the flooding in November bring back some normality to their lives. We also want to make absolutely sure that this next stage of funding helps those who need it most but without leaving anyone behind or anyone falling through the cracks in our criteria. “That’s why we are aiming to treat applications on a case by case basis as we know that no one situation is the same as another so we are being as flexible as possible. We are doing our best to ensure we can do as much as possible to help everyone who comes to us for financial support.”

South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation set up an emergency appeal the day after the November flooding hit and has been working to provide financial relief to affected households since.

and as the match is for up to £1million we are encouraging the general public, local businesses, everyone to continue to donate to the flood appeal if they can, as all donations now will be doubled.”

SYCF ran a similar appeal in 2007 and raised almost £1.6m at that time to distribute out into communities. This time around the charity has already raised over £500,000 which is now being matched £1 for £1 by Central Government funding for up to £1 million.

You can donate to the South Yorkshire Flood Disaster Relief Appeal by going to: www.justgiving.com/ campaigns/syfloods or emailing admin@sycf.org or calling 0114 242 4857 for alternative ways to donate.

Ruth Willis continued: “This £1 for £1 match funding will help us to do so much more to help local people

If you have been flooded and require financial aid then please go to: www.sycf.org.uk/floodfund/ or call 0114 242 4857 for advice and support.

New park and playground for Wisewood’s Spider Park PEOPLE in Wisewood will soon have a new space to play, relax and enjoy the outdoors, as Sheffield City Council has approved funding to develop a new park and playground at Spider Park. For the last few years people living in the area have been asking for improvements to the park, on the site of the former Wisewood School, and consultation has previously been carried out to establish the type of play facility that could be provided. The plans from this consultation work will form a starting point for the project and further en-

gagement will take place among local people, to review this important work for the Wisewood community.

cilities and services available in the surrounding community, which will bring this development to completion.

The new park is the last piece of the jigsaw for leisure opportunities in the Wisewood area, after Wisewood Leisure Centre and the on-site pitches were developed in recent years.

Sheffield City Council will begin engagement and design work to develop a scheme that meets the needs of the local community, fit for the available space, and which can be delivered within the available budget.

The site for the new park and playground is on the corner of Rural Lane and Laird Road between the Riva Project (community cafĂŠ) and the Wisewood Leisure Centre. The pocket park style site will form an important part of the local area, complementing the existing fa-

This development work will take place over the coming months. The council will inform local people as plans progress, working with the community, local councillors and stakeholders.

Search for missing councillor information THIS year, Ecclesfield Parish Council is celebrating 125 years of operation. An Act of Parliament in 1894 set up this level of local government, and elections were held at the end of the year. The first meeting was held in early 1895.

The Ecclesfield Civil Archiving Project is researching the names and backgrounds of the first Parish Councillors. Unfortunately, the identities of some of them cannot be confirmed from the censuses of 1891, 1901

and 1911. They include John Bell and George Neale. The project would welcome any information about these men, who would probably have been born between 1840 and 1860, and would be interested in receiving any informa-

tion from readers whose ancestors were connected with the original Parish Council. The names of the other original Councillors include Havershon, Green (two councillors), Newton, Milnes, Hemingfield, Rhodes,

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS CARDIO THERE is a false dichotomy between cardio training and resistance training. Many people believe that in some way your heart has to be conditioned independently from the rest of your body. However, there is no need to train two separate programs: the condition of the heart is improved when you improve your body’s overall fitness level. fit20 training improves your cardiovascular fitness without any additional ‘cardio’ exercise. At fit20, we employ high intensity training or HIT. This

is strength training using weights, performing quality repetitions under the expert guidance of a personal trainer. The intensity is key, as we use this to increase the demands on your muscles to make your heart pump harder to supply them with oxygen rich blood. Your heart supports and responds to your muscles, so the harder they work, the harder the heart must work too. By training your muscles correctly, your heart will follow! With the exacting methods we use at fit20, you are effectively exercising your

aerobic system for up to 90 minutes after your training session ends! As well as increasing your muscular strength, weekly fit20 training improves the fitness of your heart, lungs, blood vessels and thereby your stamina. Hate cardio training? Then fit20 is for you!

Consultation set to launch on South Yorkshire devolution deal

SOUTH Yorkshire is a step closer to receiving tens of millions of pounds in additional powers and resources, after the Sheffield City Region Mayoral Combined Authority today agreed to proceed with the implementation of the Devolution Deal.

nounce that today the Sheffield City Region Mayoral Combined Authority has agreed to proceed with the implementation of the Devolution Deal for South Yorkshire. The agreement to launch the required consultation represents a significant step forwards.

The deal was agreed by Mayor Dan Jarvis and council leaders in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield at a meeting of the Mayoral Combined Authority earlier this morning.

“Subject to its completion and the parliamentary process, the people of South Yorkshire will be able to benefit from the Deal this year, including from the £30 million annual investment fund.

Prior to that meeting, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Robert Jenrick, voiced his support for the deal when he met Mayor Dan Jarvis at the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre. During his visit, Mr Jenrick met staff and toured Factory 2050.

“We also look forward to the progression of discussions over the coming months on the role and functions of a Committee of Leaders from across Yorkshire, based on the existing Yorkshire Leaders Board.

In a joint statement, Mayor Jarvis and Mr Jenrick said: “We are delighted to an-

“Through continued collaboration we will support more positive economic outcomes for people right across the historic county.”

The devolution deal brings with it £30m a year in additional funding for economic growth, as well as power over the adult education budget totalling around £35m each year. It also means additional powers for the Mayoral Combined Authority, in areas including transport, skills, and governance.

Following the leaders’ agreement this morning, a public consultation on the proposals will be launched next week, Mayor Dan Jarvis and Robert Jenrick, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and and run for six weeks. Members of the public will be asked their views on bringing increased powers and resources to the region, and putting more decisionmaking responsibilities in the hands of local leaders. Following this public consultation, an Order will be laid in Parliament, which will need to be signed by the four council leaders and Mayor Jarvis before the devolution deal is formalised.

£600k for GP Neighbourhoods innovative projects THE Upper Don Valley is one of seven GP practices in Sheffield to have been given extra funding to help improve the health and wellbeing of people in their areas. NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has given practices £600,000 as part of the CCG’s primary care transformation fund. The GP practices are working together in different groups known as ‘neighbourhoods’ to support the needs of their local residents. This is in addition to the £718K that the CCG awarded to neighbourhoods last year. The money will be used to fund a number of neighbourhood projects including supporting young people with mental health and emotional wellbeing advice, early intervention for mental health illnesses in teenagers and adolescents, identifying reasons for early deaths in 25 to 39 year olds, improving the lives of people with dementia, social prescribing and tackling loneliness and reducing isolation in older people. In Sheffield, practices, community and voluntary groups as well as social care and schools have joined together to form neighbourhood groups across the city, in order to bring together services and staff. The idea behind neighbourhoods is to support people to gain control of their own

health and wellbeing, helping them to live well and independently, reducing ill health as well as unnecessary hospital admissions. Each neighbourhood covers a community of around 30,000 to 50,000 people. This means that neighbourhood teams are small enough that they know each other as well as their patients; it means they can provide seamless care and a mix of skills from hospital staff, mental health services, GPs and social care to name a few. Dr Anthony Gore, Sheffield GP and Clinical Director for Care Outside of Hospital at the CCG, said: “I’m incredibly excited to announce this second allocation of money to our neighbourhoods. Our aim is to improve the health and wellbeing of people across Sheffield by commissioning more care and support into neighbourhoods - closer to where people live. By investing this money, our neighbourhoods can start working to achieve this, particularly tailoring services to meet the specific needs of their local residents.” With this new investment, each of the neighbourhoods receiving funding will work on an individual project. The CCG will learn from the projects to see what works and what could be done differently.

Upper Don Valley is one of the neighbourhood areas to receive funding. Upper Don Valley Neighbourhood Clinical Director and GP at Oughtibridge Surgery Dr Ruth Izard, said, “We are thrilled to have received this money which will see us working with a number of community organisations across our neighbourhood, including health and social care, education and leisure, to offer mental health and emotional wellbeing advice to young people aged 13 – 25 living in Oughtibridge, Deepcar, Stocksbridge and Wharncliffe side. “In particular, we are working closely with Stocksbridge Leisure Centre to put on physical activity sessions such a football and keep fit for young people, which will also offer emotional support if needed. There will also be wellbeing cafes at secondary schools, drop in sessions at GP practices and individual counselling support. “Teenage and young adulthood is a pivotal point in an individual’s life and can be fraught with challenges and difficulties. We hope that by increasing the number of young people exercising, using leisure facilities and attending face to face social groups and drop in sessions that it will improve young people’s health and wellbeing as well and reducing loneliness and social isolation.”

that belonged to February 14, and added to later martyrologies. A popular account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell. Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church. The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly

love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). In Europe, Saint Valentine’s Keys are given to lovers “as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart”, as well as to children, in order to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine’s Malady). Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. No matter what you choose to do this Valentine’s Day, be sure to let the one you love know how much they mean to you in your own special way!

STOCKSBRIDGE Steels faced two tricky away games last week with their focus being on climbing back up into the play off positions. First up was a midweek visit to Loughborough FC and an excellent team performance, backed up by some superb goalkeeping by young Manchester United loanee Jacob Carney, saw them keep a clean sheet and gain a point.

Steels were unlucky not to collect all three when a Josh Nodder effort hit the post.

However, good organisation meant Carney was rarely troubled in the Steels goal.

Then on Saturday, Steels travelled to Chasetown FC where once again the whole team put in a dogged display in a 2-0 win.

Steels sealed the game with five minutes to go when a Steels counter attack was finished off by a well struck shot from the edge of the box by Kurtis Turner.

A slick passing move was finished in style at the far post by Ross Goodwin for Steels’ opener and they took their lead into the break. Injuries forced a change of shape at the start of the second half and this allowed Chasetown more possession.

The win moved Steels up to fifth and back in the play off positions. This weekend, Stocksbridge Park Steels are at home to Sutton Coldfield at the Look Local Stadium with a 3pm kick off.

Winter competitions warming up THE winter season is in full force at Stocksbridge Golf Club, with plenty of competitive golf over the last two weeks. Firstly, January 18 and 19 saw two separate Professional’s Prize competitions in the gent’s section. On the Saturday, Stuart Marsh (20) won with a highly impressive 44 points including three birdies on the front nine holes. Stuart kept the scoring going on the back nine to win clearly by three points. Eric Wilkinson (9) was second with 41 points and Pete Westhead (9)

came in third with 40 points in a round that included two birdies. On the Sunday, Nasser Hassan (15) won the competition with 38 points. Mick Hulbert (12) was second with 37 points and Martin Bye (11) came in third with 34 points. The Dragons section kept their Christmas Cracker Winter Cup going on January 22. Noel Weaver (17) won with 39 points, steady going in cool and windy conditions. John Moss (20) came second with 38 points and Trevor Newton (14) beat a small group of golfers - Frank

Hines, John Leaning, Doug Needham and Dave Broadhurst - who all scored 37 points. Trevor took third place with a better back nine score than the others.

cap by two shots. Brian Dobb (18) came in a creditable second with 43 points and Dave Bertram (13) came in third with 41 points.

121 points. Dave Stringer is in second place with 114 points and Club Captain, Steven Haigh, is in third place with 112 points.

The Gents Winter Cup, round three, was completed on Saturday January 25. Richard Hastings (18) won by a clear three point margin with 46 points. Richard not only managed to keep a six off his card but he also had two birdies on the front nine.

WELCOME: Pedersen with Tigers team boss Simon Stead

THREE-time World Champion Nicki Pedersen introduced himself to Sheffield fans on a special evening at Owlerton on Thursday. Supporters flocked to Owlerton to meet the new Tru Plant Tigers number one - getting to know him on a more personal level ahead of the forthcoming season. The dynamic Dane provided an insight into life as one of the most experienced riders in the world and expressed his excitement ahead of a new challenge at a club that matches his ambitions for the year ahead. Pedersen said: “The club have been working hard to get the team together which makes me happy to see they have the ambition to do well - they certainly have the tools.

“I’m looking forward to being part of that as best as I possibly can and hopefully we get some luck along the way which is something you definitely need in sport.” Despite not riding at Owlerton consistently over the years - Pedersen can’t wait to get out on track with help from team boss and Sheffield legend Simon Stead. “It was just the right time for Simon to call me - if anyone other than Simon would’ve called me then I wouldn’t have come back,” he added. “His family have treated me so well in the past and we’ve got a mutual respect for each other. “Simon is clever enough to know I’ll listen to him. He knows the way around Owlerton - you never be-

were going to go on and win it and if it wasn’t for some excellent goalkeeping and some last ditch defending clearing balls off the line, we would have done.

Tom Jamieson stunned the majority of the 268 crowd on 31 minutes when he gave the visitors the lead and they would have to wait until the 78th minute for the equaliser to come when Jordan Coduri got his name on the score sheet.

“That’s credit to Grimsby, I like Grimsby I think they’re a very good side. What I saw today was a good footballing team, I knew they had good footballers, I’m a huge advocate of Josh Venny in midfield, Adam Drury and Jack Debnam but I also saw today that Grimsby can also change it up, they matched us up four-three-three, they went direct and matched us in midfield.

“They didn’t go to play from the back, they went forward quickly and they did well. On shots and chances created we were the better team and probably on crosses we created more but they scored a good goal.”
