FORMER CARER JAILED A FORMER carer from Stocksbridge has been put behind bars after admitting to stealing from an elderly vascular dementia sufferer she was supposed to be looking after.

Caroline Bastable of Wheatacre Road was caught stealing items including cash, jewellery and perfume on CCTV which had been installed by the 80year-old victim’s son after he became suspicious. Worryingly, she was also seen failing to give the elderly woman her medication. Judge Michael Slater told her: “You had responsibility for an elderly and vulnerable lady that you had in your care and that was a responsibility you flouted in a serious and unpleasant way.”

He sentenced her to 12 months in prison and she will serve half of that term before being released. In November 2017, items such as food and milk began to disappear from the victim’s home. A family friend then noticed cash, which had been hidden around the house, was missing. A large quantity of cigarettes, hidden at the back of a cupboard, had also been taken. This led to the victim’s son installing the CCTV around his mother’s property, in Barnsley.

Throughout December that year, footage from the cameras evidenced Bastable stealing from the then 80-year-old on more than one occasion. She helped her-

self to food from the kitchen cupboards and was often seen rifling through drawers, jewellery boxes and the victim’s purses hunting for cash and other valuables. On one occasion, she stole a gold bangle as the pensioner slept in the same room. Later that same evening, she helped herself to toiletries and perfume from gift sets. Some of these items were recovered by police during a search of Bastable’s home following her arrest on December 17, 2017. Worryingly, the 42year-old was regularly seen to not give the house-bound victim her medication. When later questioned by police, she stated she “must have forgotten”.

99%

Detective Constable Sam Carr, of Rotherham CID, who led the investigation said: “This has been a lengthy inquiry and I would like to thank the victim’s family for their support and assistance over the past two years. “The victim’s son and daughter-in-law relied upon and trusted Bastable to take care of their mum at her most vulnerable. To abuse this trust, and her position, is disgusting and I am pleased that Bastable is now facing a substantial prison term.” Bastable pleaded guilty to three counts of wilful neglect and two counts of theft at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday November 19.

Pupils at Grenoside Community Primary School go back in time with virtual reality workshop CHILDREN at Grenoside Community Primary School were transported back in time thanks to a unique virtual reality (VR) workshop organised by the Grenoside Parent -Teacher Association. The session, delivered by PrimeVR, was funded by the Sheffield City Council Ward Pot Grant, to give Key Stage Two children an insight into prehistoric times and Ancient Egypt - topics linked to the national curriculum. Virtual Reality, most commonly referred to as VR, has become globally recognised as a tool for education. The use of VR headsets in schools, immerses pupils into a virtual world beyond the classroom.

It gives children the chance to experience what it’s like in certain places of the world, different periods in history, inside the human body and even out into the Solar System and beyond.

was brilliant! It was like an educational school trip but without having to leave the classroom. It allowed children to experience places like no video, picture or computer could ever capture.

During the day Year Three and Four children experienced what life was like 12,000 years ago during the Stone Age; learning about what foods they ate and the types of clothes they wore.

“The VR headsets give a sense of awe and wonder, which really helped them get them excited about the topics. I am delighted that, through the Sheffield Council Ward Pot funding, the workshop was made possible.”

Year Five and Six students travelled to the banks of the Nile to learn all about the amazing people and places of Ancient Egypt and see Pyramids and Pharaoh’s Tomb. Councillor Alan Hooper, who organised the funding, said: “The session

After the session, teachers at the school were provided with follow up lesson plans which linked nicely with the workshop. This will allow the children to carry on their learning and complete some

fantastic work, in particularly creative writing. Speaking about the session, Year Four Teacher Jenni Monach, said: “We know that experiencing something

first-hand can’t be beaten but this is not always feasible especially events from the past, which is why VR is so special.

“It brought history to life and was a fantastic learning tool for our children. We are extremely grateful to the PTA and the Council for giving us this opportunity to experience Stonehenge!”

Major milestone passed for Stocksbridge rail project PLANS to re-open the railway line from Sheffield to Stocksbridge took a significant step forward this week as the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, Miriam Cates, submitted a formal proposal to the Department for Transport. This is the first stage of a process that the Government has created in order to restore passenger services to railways that have been closed since the infamous ‘Beeching Axe’ of the 1960s. The proposal has been drafted in partnership with the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority and the Don Valley Railway campaign group, and asks the Government for funding to produce a comprehensive business case for a service of up to three trains per hour between Stocksbridge and the centre of Sheffield. It could also see passenger trains stopping at Deep-

car, Oughtibridge, Wadsley Bridge and Neepsend. Commenting on the submission, Miriam Cates said: “This proposal offers us a real opportunity to improve transport connections for our community and unleash our economic and social potential. “By linking Stocksbridge and the Upper Don Valley into the national rail network we can reduce congestion and air pollution whilst also making it easier for people to access jobs, training and services across the region. “I look forward to continuing to move this project forward by presenting our case to the Department for Transport in person next month.” The next stage of the process requires the local MP and a sponsor body, in this case the Sheffield City Region, to

submit a full written bid to the Department for Transport, followed by a presentation to a panel of ministers and officials in March. Meanwhile, the MP and her newly appointed constituency team have moved into their new office at Fox Valley. The office will serve as the MP’s base when she’s not in Westminster and will be staffed by her constituency team throughout the week. Miriam said: “I am delighted to have my constituency office here at Fox Valley, it’s a great location and really is in the heart of the area that I am representing. “Fox Valley shows what a really transformational regeneration scheme can achieve and we are looking forward to building on that for the area with the Government’s new Towns Fund.”

BARCLAYS CLOSED BY GREENPEACE VISITORS to the Hillsborough branch of Barclays Bank found it to be closed on Monday March 2. A sign on the door stated: “Due to circumstances beyond our control this branch will not open today.” However, underneath the sign was a large sticker showing a woman holding a sign that read: “Barclays: Stop funding the climate emergency.” Almost 100 branches of Barclays were unable to open for business after Greenpeace obstructed the entrances. The campaign targeted branches across the UK to protest against the bank’s funding of oil and gas companies. Greenpeace claims among banks, Barclays is the biggest funder of fossil fuels in Europe. It wants

the bank to switch its funding into renewable energy. Barclays said it is working to get the branches open as quickly as possible. Morten Thaysen, climate finance campaigner at Greenpeace UK, said: “Barclays must stop funding the climate emergency, that’s why we’ve taken action today. Mayor Jarvis has sent a detailed Budget submission to the Treasury, challenging the Government, and the new Chancellor Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP, to support our region’s ambitions and reduce national inequalities through sustained investment and devolution of powers. The Mayor highlights that devolution, together with the Sheffield City Region’s upcoming Strategic Economic Plan (SEP), will enable South Yorkshire to create good, new jobs, drive inclusive

growth and address the climate emergency. Mayor Jarvis said: “Here in the Sheffield City Region we stand ready to deliver major projects, build productivity and secure new investment into our region. “In the last 18 months McLaren Automotive have opened a £50m innovation and production facility, Boeing launched their only manufacturing facility in Europe and a new UK Atomic Energy Authority facility is in development that will explore how to commercialise nuclear fusion and develop new manufacturing techniques. “In the last month we have unlocked the Sheffield City Region Devolution Deal, and through the Local Enterprise

Partnership an ambitious and bold new Strategic Economic Plan is being developed. “This progress signals not only our ambition but our ability, working with the private sector to get things done. It’s now time for Government to back us with sustained investment that will create improved opportunities for our communities and businesses, and make our region an even better place in which to live, work and invest.” In the Budget submission, Mayor Jarvis challenges the Government to commit to millions of pounds in investment for the region, including the full £220m Transforming Cities Fund allocation, £200m for flood mitigation schemes and £300m to connect Doncas-

A HUGE 97 per cent of children in Sheffield have been given a place at one of their preferred secondary schools, new figures released on Monday March 2 show. while also ensuring that global energy needs continue to be met. “Greenpeace has a view on these issues to which they are completely entitled, but we would ask that - in expressing that view - they stop short of behaviour which targets our customers, and our colleagues, going about their lives in communities around the country.”

SHEFFIELD CITY REGION MAYOR URGES NEW CHANCELLOR TO MAKE GOOD ON ELECTION PROMISES TO THE NORTH DAN Jarvis MP, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, has called on the Government to deliver its promise to level up the economy by investing in South Yorkshire in the forthcoming Budget.

ter Sheffield Airport to the East Coast Main Line. Following the Mayoral Combined Authority’s declaration of a Climate Emergency last year, Mayor Jarvis also underlines the importance of putting the environment and sustainability at the heart of future investment.

Of the 6,598 students set to start secondary school in September, 97 per cent have been given a place at one of their three preferences, while 90 per cent have been given their first choice of school. Sheffield is once again performing above the national average. Councillor Abtisam Mohammed, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “I hope today’s results are a big relief to the thousands of families across Sheffield who have been waiting to find out if their child has been accepted into one of their preferred schools. “The opening of the two new secondary schools Mercia and Astrea in the south west and north east of the city, has helped to meet the demands of the city, however there continues to be pressures on places as a result of increasing pupil numbers.

“We all want the best for our children and a huge priority for us is to keep on raising attainment and achievement rates across the city. Getting children into their preferred school and providing outstanding local schools are key to this.” The small number of children who were not allocated a place at any of their three preferences have either been referred back to their catchment school or been allocated the nearest school with places available. Information and advice is available to those did not get their preferred school, visit https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/home/ schools-childcare/catchment-areas-oversubscribed-schools Parents and carers can also email the team at ed-admissions@sheffield.gov.uk Parents also have the right to appeal. Appeals take place between April and July.

We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the

highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

IT’S possible to create an attractive garden in the smallest of spaces that won’t break the bank, by choosing the right plants and by making the most of every available surface, whether you’ve got a patio, balcony or just a window ledge. Perhaps the easiest and cheapest way to give your patio a quick makeover is to use seasonal bedding plants to provide some instant colour.

creasing range of gardening tasks. It’s time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden. Jobs for this month as recommended by the RHS should include: •

Protect new spring shoots from slugs

Plant shallots, onions and early potatoes

Whether you go for pansies or old-fashioned begonias, robust geraniums with their distinctive scent or sweet busy Lizzies you can get an easy pop of colour with a good selection of plants and pots.

Plant summer flowering bulbs

Lift and divide clumps of perennials

Top dress containers with fresh compost

Small trees, shrubs and just about any other plant can be grown in pots on a patio. Where space is really tight, underplant larger specimens with low-growing plants to really make the most of every available centimetre.

Mow the lawn on dry days

• stems

Cut back dogwood and willow grown for winter

For instance, trailing nasturtiums, herbs or fast-growing leafy salads look great when planted around the base of a containerised standard tree.

• Hoe and mulch weeds to keep them under control early •

Start feeding fish and using the pond fountain

Don’t forget that you can always go up as well … so take advantage of your vertical space.

Prune bush and climbing roses

There are many clever growing kits available that allow you to grow flowers and edibles on walls and fences – which add greenery and texture to your outside space. Embrace the natural style and elements. Cottage gardens have classic appeal and are easy to recreate by using old materials and soft, romantic planting. Rustic, unfinished wood, warm pebbles and lightly distressed brickwork all work together to provide a natural, unfussy aesthetic. A weathered shabby chic bench surrounded by planted up pots will provide a comfortable place to sit and relax. And if your patio is partly shaded then think about plants that are happy in those conditions such as hydrangeas, violas and ferns. The joy about container growing is that you can move plants around so that your garden is a constantly changing canvas and works with the seasons. As spring gets underway, usually by mid-March, the more frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an in-

Sheffield neighbourhood team reshaped to serve communities better “Whilst those officers have done a fantastic job, it’s become clear that we needed a rethink on how our neighbourhood resources are deployed if we’re to deal with issues effectively and swiftly. These changes will mean that there is a consistent approach across this part of the city, which I hope will be reassuring for the public.

le burglary, rural crime and drug dealing in some of these areas. “This is a really exciting moment for neighbourhood policing in Sheffield; I am pleased with the reaction from businesses and I am confident that residents in our rural communities will see a real difference. “I would like the public to know that there are some brilliant leaders and officers working across these parts of the city and they are there for you. If you have any concerns about things that are happening in your area, please do get in touch with them.

“One recurring theme is that businesses and people living and working in the city centre want to see resources dedicated to the urban heart of the city. “With our new city centre team, this is what they will get. “Lead by Inspector John Mallows, the team will focus on issues such as business and retail crime, violence in the night time economy and so-called ‘street culture’ and associated problems.

FROM March 2, South Yorkshire Police’s Sheffield Central and North West Neighbourhood Teams have changed, with the aim of serving the public better.

The existing team is being split into two new teams; Sheffield City Centre and Sheffield North West. Superintendent for Neighbourhoods and Partnerships, Delphine Waring,

Weather beats Steels once again IT was another frustrating weekend for Stocksbridge Park Steels on Saturday when their clash with league leaders Leek Town was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. This was the second postponement in two weeks but fortunately it hasn’t affected their league position and they still sit in fifth. Hopefully the weather will improve as we move into March with some really big games coming up. Steels face five home fixtures during the month and they are all against teams in and around the promotion places.

Local Sport

The first of these is this Saturday when they welcome in-form Chasetown FC at the Look Local Stadium with a 3pm kick off. Penistone Church’s games against Garforth Town and Athersley Rec were both postponed, as was Stocksbridge RUFC’s fixture against Halifax.

Sheffield lines up to re-claim the ‘beautiful game’ it gave to the world MANY would cite it as one of the most important documents ever to be unveiled at Sheffield Town Hall. In fact the city is hoping the 180 pages launched on Wednesday March 4 will be the catalyst to claw back more than 160 years of lost history and make the ‘Made in Sheffield’ brand as synonymous with the world’s most popular spectator sport as it is with steel. Sheffield – 163 years after the world’s oldest football club was formed within its boundaries – is lining up to ensure the world never forgets its place as the global home of the beautiful game. As far as sporting legacies go, the city’s footballing credentials are beyond reproach. It boasts amongst other things the world’s oldest team, first ground, first trophy, first derby, first floodlit game – even many of the rules of the modern game were first used Sheffield. The city is hoping the unveiling of the ‘Sheffield Home of Football Document’ will start to build on the early successes of Sheffield Home of Football Ltd, the not-for-profile or-

ganisation behind the strategy which comprises representatives from Sheffield University, Sheffield Council, Sheffield Libraries and Archives and the author of a history of early Sheffield football.

That’s why it’s of paramount importance we develop our unique position as its home. The sport builds communities; encourages social cohesion; boosts health and well-being and is a major contributor to the economy. We want to use our heritage to make Sheffield a more attractive place to live, work, visit, invest and play.”

The same year the group installed a commemorative plaque at the grave Nathaniel Creswick – the founder of the world’s oldest football club, Sheffield FC.

Highlights of the far-reaching strategy – which has been written by Sheffield University’s Dr John P Wilson and two MBA students – include proposals for goalpost-style signage over the M1 motorway on the border of the city hailing ‘Welcome to Sheffield
