Community Facebook group explodes THE community of Oughtibridge is one of many that has pulled together during the coronavirus crisis and despite it’s comparatively diminutive size, the village has seen a huge number of people sign up for a Facebook help group. The group, ‘Helping Oughtibridge, Worrall and Wharncliffe Side’, was set up by Oughtibridge resident Gary Chamberlain in December of last year and proved to be popular. But membership has swelled to over 700 members since the crisis began. Gary, 57, is retired and says the group has given him something to do and The stock at the chapel and Gary Chamberlain

He told Look Local: “We have a network of over 700 members with over 90 volunteers who are delivering prescriptions for M&A Chemists, delivering food from our donations hub and offering the vulnerable and lonely the opportunity to chat with other residents and volunteers. “The response has been quite incredible and emotional. One young lady, Francesca Arundel from Oughtibridge, has gone a step further and is actually doing her own support work.” Oughtibridge Chapel is being used to store food supplies that have been donated

and anyone who is struggling to put food on the table is welcome to make use of the resource. Gary added: “I hate to think that people are struggling when they don’t need to. I think maybe some people are too proud to make use of it – and I understand that to an extent but it’s well-stocked, it’s there to be used and we can even deliver it for you.” Gary’s encouraging people to send him an email on howresidents@gmail.com if they want to ask any questions on getting set up in their own communities.­­ The same email address can be used for anyone wishing to access supplies from the chapel.

Jewellery stolen in Thurgoland burglary POLICE in Barnsley have shared an image of a distinctive necklace that was taken in a reported burglary earlier this week, in a bid to trace the stolen item.

Three people – a 22-year-old man and two teenage boys aged 16 and 15 – have been arrested on suspicion of burglary and have since been released with no further action.

At 11.10pm on Tuesday April 14, it is reported that three people with their faces covered forced entry to a house on Rag Lane in Thurgoland.

Enquiries are ongoing to identify those involved and police are keen to hear from anyone who may have been offered the necklace pictured, or hold any information about the burglary.

The suspects are believed to have searched the property, before forcing entry to the garage as well and searching in there, causing damage. A number of items were taken, including this distinctive necklace (pictured).

SYCF rallies to support communities during coronavirus crisis SYCF have launched an emergency fund to support community groups and charities on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic. The Covid-19 Response Fund has been set up to distribute donated money and the proceeds raised from the National Emergencies Trust (NET) Coronavirus Appeal to help local charities to support those individuals suffering hardship as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

Funding from the appeal is already being distributed, with the first grant of £25,000 being given to the extensive Sheffield Food Bank Network to help them continue their essential work, which includes providing food parcels for those who are in self-isolation. The newly appointed High Sheriff of South Yorkshire, Carole O’Neill said: “Food banks are close to my heart and I am so pleased that SYCF have given a grant of £25,000 from the Covid-19 Response Fund to be spread across

Sheffield Food Bank Network for people experiencing hardship as a result of Covid-19. “Please remember to protect the NHS, wash your hands regularly and only venture out if your journey is really necessary. Stay safe. We are all in this together.” A further 19 grants have now been allocated to organisations across South Yorkshire with more currently being processed as quickly as possible.

A LOCAL business owner has spoken out about the impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on small independent businesses.

IT’S been a busy month for on-call firefighters at Stocksbridge fire station. They’ve had around 20 call outs since the start of March - that’s nearly three times as many as the previous two months combined.

Brian told Look Local: “We primarily supply the licensed trade with Uncle Alberts pork scratchings, Senor Alberto Snacking Olives and other bar snacks, when the government ordered everywhere to shut, our business basically disappeared over night.’’ The government has introduced schemes to sup-

port businesses through these tough times in the hope that they will be able to re-open in the future but Brian has raised concerns that packages don’t support everyone, and any funding which might be available will come too late for some small businesses. He says: “I have worked tirelessly to explore the options set out by the government but the criteria make it hard for smaller operations like us to find something that suits.” Brian has had to adapt where possible and has used online platforms like eBay and Amazon to move stock through, he has also highlighted the impact that the coronavirus is having on people’s mental health.

“After the shutdown was ordered I spent the first few days on the phone to suppliers and customers, it was a huge shock to the industry and people were struggling, I would urge you to not worry in silence, pick up the phone and talk to the business community, share help and advice because we are all in the same boat at the minute.” The UK wide lockdown is not expected to be lifted anytime soon. Brian added: “It is the biggest challenge I have faced in the business but hopefully if we all adhere to the social distancing measures implemented by the Government and continue to help the NHS we will all be through this soon.”

STEEL casting and forging specialist, Sheffield Forgemasters, has devoted its 3D printing facility to help protect vulnerable frontline NHS workers and assist in the UK’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Sheffield Forgemasters’ Research, Design and Technology (RD&T) department has started to produce 3D printed components for protective visors used by NHS staff, in response to a request from 3D print solutions provider, Solid Print3D. The initiative coincides with Dan Jarvis, the mayor of the Sheffield city region,

RD&T uses its 3D printing output to produce models and prototypes for ultra-large, complex steel components, but with the ability to 3D print the visor components, the business is more than happy to play its part in assisting the fight against the pandemic. MIRIAM Cates, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has welcomed news that the Government will be providing laptops for schools to distribute to vulnerable GCSE and A-Level pupils who don’t have access to their own devices. Schools across Sheffield will be able to allocate their laptops and 4G routers based on their own teachers’ knowledge of which pupils are most in need, but the scheme is designed to help GCSE and A-Level students from disadvantaged backgrounds and children of any age who are care leavers or who have a social worker and do not have a device they can use already. Commenting on the announcement, Miriam Cates MP said: “This announcement is an important step in ensuring that every child is able to continue their education at

home whilst schools remain closed due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. “As a mother of school-aged children and a former secondary school teacher myself I know the challenges that everyone involved in educating children is currently facing, with parents suddenly finding themselves transformed into teachers. Virtual relay success A LACK of running competitions due to COVID-19 has led to Penistone runners competing in what are being called ‘virtual’ races. Thirty-three members for PFRAC were amongst over 5,000 athletes nationally to take

The famous three peaks fell race which, until cancelled, was due to be run later this month was replaced by a stair climbing challenge where teams had to climb up and down stairs in their homes to match the equivalent elevation of the three national highest peaks of Snowdon, Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike.

The men’s A team finished 103rd in 3-51-46 whilst the top 12 Women’s team ranked 28th nationally. The women’s six to count team finished 66th whilst the age graded competition, which sees athletes given a handicap based on age and gender, saw the club finish 99th. In the veteran competitions, the men were 52nd in 1-54-44 whilst the women were 15th in 2-11-30. Finally the club was able to field a four to count in the men’s over-50 team which finished 17th. Both Hugh Mackie (male under-17) and Dawn Broom (lady over-55) finished in the top 10 in the country in their respective age groupings.

Penistone runners Jon Waller, James Fryers along with Jon’s friend Tom Parzyk formed a team of three and took on the challenge. Jon ran up and down his stairs 538 times, Tom 359 times and James 350 times to give a total height of 3,408 metres. Their combined times put them in 4th place overall in their category.

Hugh was also the fastest Penistone male with 16-32, just in front of Gary Briscoe who ran 16-38 in
