POLICEMAN DIES ON DUTY IN ECCLESFIELD PC Matt Lannie, 40, was responding to a call when he was involved in a collision on his motorcycle A POLICEMAN on a motorcycle died after being involved in a collision on Nether Lane in Ecclesfield on Tuesday April 21. A marked police motorcycle was responding to an incident at around 1pm when it was in collision with a blue Toyota Avensis. The police vehicle was responding to reports of a silver BMW failing to stop for officers. The 40-year-old police officer has been named as PC Matt Lannie. He was sadly pronounced dead a short time after the collision. The driver of the Toyota, a 64-yearold man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

South Yorkshire Police’s specialist officers are supporting the officer’s family and the driver of the Avensis. On Wednesday, Chief Constable Stephen Watson QPM has paid tribute to PC Lannie. He said: “It is with great sadness that we today pay tribute to serving officer, PC Matt Lannie, who died in the line of duty. Dreadful events such as these serve to remind us of the great dangers that police officers confront every day in order to keep us all safe. “Matt was a specialist motorcycle officer in our roads policing unit and prior to this was a response officer at Sheffield. He was a very popular member of the team and he will be greatly missed.

“The South Yorkshire police family is doing everything we can to provide support and comfort to Matt’s loved ones and his colleagues at what is a very difficult time. “Matt’s family has asked for privacy and we ask their wishes are respected in order to allow them the time and space they so richly deserve.” Any witnesses to the collision can contact 101 quoting incident number 374 of 21 April 2020. Grenoside scouts take part in ‘virtual camp at home’ to celebrate St George’s Day THIRTY-FIVE beavers, cubs and scouts took part in a ‘virtual camp at home’ this week to celebrate St George’s Day, the Patron Saint of Scouting. Baden-Powell chose St George as the Patron Saint of Scouting as he felt that the Saint George legend set a good example of faith, courage and perseverance for future generations. Traditionally scouts across the UK renew their promise on St George’s Day but with the social distancing restrictions in place, Grenoside scouts decided to mark the occasion in a different way this year. Instead of gathering as a group like in previous years, scouts and their leaders pitched their tents in their gardens and built dens at homes to take part in the lockdown night away ‘at home’. Many designed a flag for their tent or den and displayed it proudly. There was even a virtual campfire on Zoom where children and leaders enjoyed campfire songs before finishing with a renewal of the scout promise. Wearing their uniform for the occasion, the group also took part in the

weekly clap for NHS key workers and carers. Each scout taking part will be awarded their ‘night away’ badge for their efforts. Grenoside cubs Akela Sam Caldwell said: “It was great for us all to get together again virtually and share their experience whilst being safe at home. “We are all living in unprecedented times so activities like this that we can share together are a great way of keeping in touch but also supporting everyone’s wellbeing. It was lots of fun and there was some wonderful singing. I hope it’s something positive we remember for many years to come.” Following Government guidance, all face-to-face Scout meetings, activities and events have been suspended from Tuesday March 17 until further notice. Each week leaders have been setting virtual tasks many linked to badges for the different groups to take part in. These include observing nature, researching different countries of the world, designing community posters and learning about religious festivals such as Easter and Passover.

STAFF and residents celebrated the 100th birthday of Joyce Berber this week with a wonderful afternoon tea party at Belmont House Nursing Home on Wednesday April 22. Celebrations also included a Scottish piper in full highland dress, who played in the garden for Joyce to enjoy through the window. Although visits from family members are not possible in the current situation, she received many phone and video calls, cards and messages.

children, her eldest son Stuart and daughter Yvonne. Joyce has always worked hard; she was a housewife for a few years when her children were small then worked as a cleaner at Malin Bridge School until she took retirement aged 62 to look after husband. Her retirement lasted just one year before she was back working, this time as a waitress at a restaurant in Bridlington on the East Coast where she lived. Joyce carried on working until she was 78 years old, when she became a carer for her husband’s best friend until 2007.

Joyce had a wonderful day opening presents and cards from her family and friends and Joyce loved to travel and enjoyed annual trips especially enjoyed her card from Her Majesty to Spain, visiting friends there until she was the Queen. 93 years old. She is now a popular resident at Belmont House and hopes to celebrate many “All of the staff team here at Belmont House more birthdays at the home. would like to wish Joyce a very happy 100th birthday,” said Home Manager Joanne Coldwell, “Joyce has lived here at Belmont House for two years and is very much part of the Belmont family.” Joyce was born in Hillsborough; she was one of five children and had two brothers and two sisters. On leaving school her first job was at Bassett’s sweet factory in Sheffield. When WWII broke out, she signed up as a land girl and worked with her Grandfather on the farms. She married in 1945 and had her wedding reception at Grandparent’s house in Hillsborough. Joyce went on to have two

Paces students going the extra mile to raise funds

TWO pupils at Paces School in High Green are going the extra mile in a bid to raise money to ensure the charity that runs their school has a strong future in these uncertain times. Nine-year-old Tobias, from Sheffield, is using his walker to walk up and down his street every day, inspired by the amazing efforts of Captain Tom Moore. He has Cerebal Palsy and Autism and cannot stand or walk unaided. He’s raising money for Paces and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where he regularly visits for treatment. So far, Tobias has raised over £8,000. Eight-year-old Lennie, from Leeds, has Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus. He isn’t able

to stand or walk independently but wanted to undertake fundraising to support his school and chose what he knows and loves best – learning songs to play on the piano. Everyone who donates can nominate a song and he’s set himself the challenge of learning 100 over the next month.

Paces supports children and adults with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders. A specialist in Conductive Education, it has been supporting individuals and families across Sheffield, Yorkshire and beyond since 1997. They teach children and adults vital skills such as sitting, standing, walking, communication and self-care.

The organisation has recently launched a major fundraising campaign to raise £3.5 million towards a new, state-of-the-art facility which will be a national centre for Conductive Education, allowing Paces to help more children and adults achieve the greatest level of independence they can through a range of supportive physical interventions.

The plans were unveiled shortly before the Coronavirus crisis began and, since then, fundraising has become even more difficult – a challenge faced by all charities. Julie Booth, Head of Fundraising at Paces Sheffield, said: “We are extremely proud of Tobias and Lennie for taking on such huge

challenges to support Paces. They are absolute stars. “We launched our Capital Appeal just before Coronavirus took hold of the country and now we are more determined than ever to keep raising vital funds to ensure that our new home can be built so that we can continue to support even more children, adults and families. “Tobias and Lennie, you are inspirations to us all and give us hope that we will build a new home for Paces so we can help you and children and adults like you in the future.” You can visit Tobias and Lennie’s fundraising pages at www.pacessheffield.org.uk.

New website and app for children’s activities in lockdown CREATE Sheffield has announced the shared launch of two new resources to support Sheffield children and young people (aged 0 to 24) and their families in lockdown.

Create Sheffield and 50 things to do before you’re five are available now and they’re completely free to use.

“The best scientific discoveries, every story ever written, the solution to a mathematical formula were all borne from creative thinking. Without care this very basic human need can be taught out of our children and young people.

Create Sheffield’s new website hosts a series of fun, creative adventures for young people, children and their families, brought together by Create Sheffield and their partner arts and cultural organisations from across Sheffield. The launch comes at the end of the week which should have seen the start of the summer school term. The website’s activities have been transformed into #homeadventures to try in lockdown. Participants are encouraged to share what they get up to on each home adventure on social media, and to invent their own #homeadventures to share with others across in the city. Ian Naylor, Chair of Create Sheffield, said: “The cultural education partnership is here to foster a movement, where every child in the city, no matter what community they live in, can explore, share and revel in the creativity that both defines them, and defines our amazing city. Ecclesfield Parish Council offers funding COUNCILLOR David Ogle is seeking out pandemic volunteer groups working within the Ecclesfield parish to see if the Parish Council can help you with funding, getting personal protective equipment or in some other way. Appeal for information after serious assault in Tankersley OFFICERS investigating an assault in Barnsley earlier this year have made an appeal for anyone with information to contact them.

“We know that there were vehicles in the area that morning and we’re particularly keen to trace the driver of a white van who helped the victim of the attack.

On Monday January 6, the victim, a man in his 30s, was stabbed in the stomach during an altercation on Carr Lane in the Tankersley area at around 8.45am.

A 27-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and has since been released on bail. PC Laura Clarke, investigating, said: “As part of our enquiries we want to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident or saw what happened that morning.
