RESCUE TEAM CALLS ON PUBLIC TO STICK TO EXERCISE GUIDELINES WOODHEAD Mountain Rescue had a busy weekend, with two call-outs in the local area. On Saturday May 2, the team was contacted by Yorkshire Ambulance Service for assistance with a casualty in Thurlstone Quarry. A woman had taken a fall whilst out riding her horse, sustaining a bang to the head resulting in a period of unconsciousness. The victim was also complaining of neck and back pain. YAS paramedics had already readied the woman and a short carry to the ambulance by team members meant she was soon

Officers seek help identifying off-road bikers OFFICERS from South Yorkshire Police’s off-road bike team are asking for your help to identify riders they would like to speak to in connection to antisocial behaviour and criminal damage in Sheffield. Enquiries are ongoing into criminal damage at the Deep-

car filling station on Manchester Road in Sheffield.

Burglary causing damage at scout activity centre POLICE officers investigating a series of burglary and criminal damage incidents at the Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre in Sheffield are asking for your help to identify those responsible. Sky-House concept for Peggy Tub site FRESH plans are being submitted to Sheffield Council for the redevelopment of the landmark Peggy Tub site in Stocksbridge. Sky-House Co is working with the team at CODA Planning for the application which would see the creation of seven threebedroom town houses - all with their own terraces and parking spaces - on the site of the former social club in New Road. The once popular venue finally closed in 2015, the victim of changing times and drinking habits.

Council distributes business support grants totalling £55m BUSINESS support grants have now been paid to 4,600 businesses in Sheffield, with the grants totalling over £55 million.

Sheffield City Council has distributed grants to 65% of eligible businesses who have applied and continues to process applications.

Funding for the grants was made available by the Government, who also set the criteria, to help businesses who are facing financial difficulty due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “We know that this is an extremely challenging time for a lot of businesses in Sheffield and we are working hard to process grants as quickly as possible. We’ve seen

the percentage of business grant payments to eligible businesses rise from 50% to 65% in the last week alone, and the business rates team are making good progress on this. “We’re also working to support businesses who are struggling to access the grants, due to having to wait for their claims to be assessed by the Valuation Office Agency, or those who are not eligible due to the fact that they share their busi-

ness premises. In these cases we are fighting their corner and lobbying Central Government for funding for these businesses. “It’s also important for me to say that we still haven’t received applications from all eligible businesses in Sheffield, so I’d urge any business owners who think they may qualify for a grant to get in touch with us.”

Businesses are advised that it could take up to 10 days for the application to be processed and reminded that it’s essential to ensure the information provided is accurate to avoid delays. DURING each of the last five years, the communities in the local area have raised over £1,200 for the work of Christian Aid. In Christian Aid Week this year, May 10 to 16, there will be no house-to-house collections, coffee mornings or May Day walk. However, the need to help families around the world to overcome poverty and injustice continues. Sara Millard, local co-ordinator for Oughtibridge, Worrall and Wharncliffe Side, said: “As this virus spreads across the world, love rises up in

response. You’ve already shown incredible kindness to your neighbours. Now is the time to reach out to your neighbours both near and far. “Your love protects. From storms, from drought, and now from coronavirus. Your love protects our global neighbours battling the spread of this illness. Your love protects. With soap, clean water and medical supplies. “Christian Aid and our partners already have experience of limiting the spread of infection during the Ebola crisis, and we will build on this experience to continue to stand

College donates vital PPE to Barnsley Hospital BARNSLEY College Public Services department have donated desperately needed Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to frontline NHS staff working at Barnsley Hospital. The department donated 30 chemosuits and shoe covers, 30 face masks, 50 pairs of protective glasses and 12,000 gloves which will be worn by hospital staff to prevent the spread of COVID-19 when they are treating patients. Barnsley Hospital’s Head of Commercial and Procurement Ser-

vices Michael King added: “Providing PPE to our staff so we can care for our patients is our absolute priority. Obviously, it is well documented that the UK has some PPE supply issues so this very kind donation will help us in our fight against COVID19. “It’s good to see the Speedway of Nations has now fixed a definitive staging date at the back end of the season, and this promises to be a fantastic event at the National Speedway Stadium in Manchester.�

But Mole has revealed how fixture compilers are working on a regular basis to look at every option for a new season once the government say it is safe and legal to do so.

Mole has also revealed how the club have put thousands into the new season and will do everything possible to support the business in hard times.

“Plans are in hand for the fixture list in all leagues as soon as we get the go ahead to resume track action,� said Mole.

He said: “Like other speedway promoters, we at Sheffield have invested a lot of money for the season and are itching to get going. “Most of us within speedway are fortunate that we rent our tracks on race nights, so most of our outgoings are running costs. “Although financially worrying, we should not be putting our long-term security in jeopardy. “What we have done is invest a lot of money into the preparing for the season, so we need to get started as soon as it is deemed safe to do so, or else it may be an entirely different scenario come next winter.�
