Parks facilities and retailers begin re-opening Sheffield’s parks grounds have remained open throughout lockdown to allow daily exercise, but all other facilities were closed. Since the restrictions changed Sheffield City Council has been reviewing facilities within parks to assess what can be safely reopened. Tennis courts were reopened on 21 May, and now car parks and bowls will also be in use again. Toilets, cafes, club houses, playgrounds and other multi-use games areas remain closed. The council is working with cafe owners and lease holders, as well as ice cream van operators, to support them towards safely reopening in early June. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “We kept all our parks grounds open to allow people the many benefits of daily

exercise in outdoor green spaces, on their doorsteps, but closed all other facilities to keep people safe. “Since the Government updated restrictions around time spent in parks and relaxing rules on essential travel, we have been reviewing all our parks’ facilities to enable reopening of those where we feel safe social distancing can still happen.

Non-essential retailers allowed to trade again from next month All non-essential retailers will be able to reopen in England from 15 June, PM Boris Johnson has announced, as part of plans to further ease the lockdown.

However, the move is “contingent on progress in the fight against coronavirus”, and retailers will have to adhere to new guidelines to protect shoppers and workers, the PM added. Outdoor markets and car showrooms will be able to reopen from 1 June. Mr Johnson said new guidance had been published for the retail sector “detailing the measures they should take to meet the necessary social distancing and hygiene standards”. “Shops now have the time to implement this guidance before they reopen,” he said. “This will ensure there can be no doubt about what steps they should take.”

Anyone who has any symptoms of the coronavirus illness (Covid19), however mild, should stay at home. Anyone listed by the Government as being in the at risk group, should stay at home.

£10,000 reward to help solve young mothers murder

Community Helpline Update Sheffield City Council has redeployed staff from Sheffield Libraries and Lifelong Learning Services to talk to those feeling lonely during isolation on the Community Support helpline. Parking Services staff have been packing food from Moor Markets ready to deliver emergency food parcels. Our Community Helpline has been operating for over a month now responding to those in need. To date we have taken: • More than 7000 calls in to the Community Helpline. • Issued over 600 emergency food parcels.

A son has pleaded for help to solve his mother's 1997 murder, as a £10,000 reward is offered.

• Helped over 900 households with personal shopping.

Patricia Grainger, 25, was strangled, stabbed and sexually assaulted near her home in Parson Cross, Sheffield, in August that year.

If you or anyone you know who is self-isolating or shielding and have no family or friends to call on, ring our Community Helpline 0114 273 4567 or ask for help on-line www.sheffield.gov.uk/coronavirus

• Helped over 500 households requesting help to collect essential medication.

Her body was dumped in a brook in nearby woodland and her killer has never been found.

TWO MEN CHARGED WITH MURDER Two men have been remanded in custody charged with the murder of a man who died following a fight in Sheffield.

Her son, Danny Grainger, said: "Someone out there knows what happened to Pat. No more secrets."

Victim Paul Crossley, aged 53, was found with a fatal head injury, in Longley Hall Way last Friday.

Her family has put up £5,000, matched by Crimestoppers, for a reward for information leading to the conviction of the person or people responsible for Mrs Grainger's murder. Ms Grainger was living with her son and her parents when she was murdered and dumped at Hartley Brook Dike, near houses on Deerlands Avenue on the Parson Cross estate. Mr Grainger urged anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers.

Sean Holt, aged 43 and Richard Ferrie, aged 44, both of Longley Hall Way, Sheffield, appeared before the city's magistrates' court. APPEAL: Young Mother Patricia Grainger, 25 was found murdered IN 1997

The two men are due to appear before the city's crown court next Tuesday. Mr Crossley, 53, was taken to hospital for treatment but died on Tuesday morning. Investigations are continuing into his death. Witnesses of the fight, which happened between 21:00 and 22:00 BST on Friday 15 May, is urged to contact police.

Barkers Open 1st June Good news! We are opening our shop on Monday 1st June. The most recent government documentation, published mid May, states that, despite other nonessential retailers still remaining closed, homeware stores are now able to reopen. Throughout the closure, we have been working hard to make sure our store is as safe as possible for customers and employees. We now have social distancing signage, hand sanitiser stations and are making available a specialist spray for sofas, beds and other upholstery that cleanses that item once it has been ‘tried’ by a customer. In addition, we are also launching an individual appointment system and ‘virtual walk around the store’, again bookable by appointment. Contact us for more details on this or check on our website.

Added to this, the location of both our stores means that our customers will benefit from lower congestion than might be found on a busy retail park, shopping centre or high street. In our experience, customers seeking to purchase large household pieces tend to do so on an annual, rather than weekly basis, so our expected footfall is significantly lower than is found in numerous other retail outlets. This makes it straightforward for us to implement social distancing measures without great disruption to staff or visitors in-store. Our large floor space also helps in this regard. We are very excited to be welcoming our customers back into store and hope to see you soon!

YOUR SAFETY AND THAT OF OUR STAFF IS OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY!

The G Plan Hatton offer generous, deep seats delivering indulgent comfort, with a choice of formal or pillow-back cushions. Choice of fabrics.

Exciting bedroom furniture like this Keeton wardrobe with trendy bi-fold doors. Many ranges and options.

The Mya 3 seater sofa, with its contemporary design and clean lines, in a luxurious velvet. Was £779, NOW £575.

Fantastic choice of beds on display like this Mammoth Medicare Pocket 270.

There’s always a great selection of carpets and flooring at our Bedroom Centre on Penistone Road.

Stocksbridge pub to get revamp Plans have been submitted to Sheffield Council to revamp The Friendship, on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge. The owners CPL Enterprise Ltd have plans to transform it back into a hotel with outdoor enthusiasts in mind. In their planning application to Sheffield Council they said the new bed and breakfast would be aimed at walkers and mountain bikers primarily but also commercial visitors during the working week.

Mountain biker rescue Woodhead Mountain rescue team was called on Friday 22 May to assist Yorkshire Ambulance Service with an injured mountain biker in Grenoside Woods. The casualty had taken a fall at speed and was experiencing lower back pain, as a precautionary measure, the casualty was immobilized including the use of a pelvic binder and transferred onto our stretcher using the YAS scoop to minimise movement, a short carry through the woods to the waiting ambulance meant the mountain biker was soon on his way to hospital for further treatment.

Hatfield moor fires South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue were called to a fire on Hatfield Moors at 05:35 pm on Sunday 17 May. Since then, fire crews have had fire engines and firefighters from across the entire service attend the incident in a bid to tackle the fire. With support from neighbouring services, crews are doing all they can to extinguish the blaze. Despite the challenging weather conditions, firefighters are continuing to make good progress at the Hatfield Moors fire. The tactics deployed over the last few days, which include the use of a specialist helicopter to attack the fire from above and the use of fire breaks to prevent further spread, have continued to be in use throughout today. Agencies involved include both South Yorkshire and Humberside fire services, Public Health England, Scottish Power and the

Environment Agency. A range of other fire and rescue services have been in attendance, too. Doncaster Council and Natural England have also been heavily involved in the incident response, working with firefighters to protect as much of the landscape, habitats and wildlife as possible. The key messages from all in attendance remain the same: Stay away from Hatfield Moors whilst firefighters do their work Close windows and doors if you’re being affected by the smoke plume Firefighters from Stocksbridge were called to Springwood Road, Hoyland, at 7.14pm. Upon arrival they found a wheelie bin well alight. This is thought to have been started accidentally, after ashes from a disposable BBQ were placed in there. It was dealt with by 7.39pm.

True Steel Spirit of Sheffield revealed as city unites

Sheffield businesses unite to support the vulnerable Although we’ve been working at distance, our city has come together like never before. We have received astounding support from individuals, businesses small and large and charities, citywide. Generosity is in Sheffielder’s natures and the overwhelming kindness of spirit has shown that our city has answered the call to deliver help and support to the most vulnerable of our citizens at a time like never before. This is a message of thanks to each and every person and organisation who has helped with an act of kindness that the city will not soon forget. Leader of Sheffield City Council, Julie Dore, said: “It is heart-warming to see so many businesses and charities coming together to support the immediate

needs of vulnerable people and families across the city. “My sincere thanks go out to each and every person who is volunteering their time to support their local community in a time of crisis, and to every business and charity going the extra mile in support of the Community Support Service in Sheffield. “As we all adjust to the ‘new normal’ during the pandemic, our great city continues to rise to the challenge of delivering emergency supplies to those who need them and in combating loneliness with emotional wellbeing telephone support on offer. Together we will get through this.” As well as our amazing key workers, we want to thank our local community organisations and businesses for all they are doing during this difficult time.

The voluntary, community and faith sectors have a lot to be proud of right now. We’d like to give them all our heartfelt thanks on behalf of Sheffield City Council’s Community Helpline for their amazing dedication and ongoing support. These organisations are supporting some of the city’s most vulnerable residents, not just now, but every day. They provide a lifeline for anyone feeling lonely or isolated and are helping with everything from providing food, delivering food parcels, collecting medicines and offering help and advice on a large range of services. For more information on their amazing work, you can look for Community groups at VAS http://www.vas. org.uk/what-we-do/covid19/.

Controlled explosions carried out after suspected WW2 devices found Two controlled explosions took place over the weekend after WW2 devices were reported found. Officers were called to Greno View Road, High Green at around 1pm on Friday 22 May. A controlled explosion was carried after two suspected WW2 incendiary devices were reported to police. An army EOD team also attended and carried out a controlled explosion on two devices found by a resident. Police and partner agencies would like to thank residents for their patience. In a seperate incident over the bank holiday weekend a fell runner whilst out running in the Langsett area, discovered what he believed to be a Mortar Shell. He subsequently made Mountain rescue team members aware of and gave a location of his find. Two members of the Woodhead Mountain Rescue who have good knowledge in this area went to investigate and confirmed the fellrun-

ners findings was correct and made contact with the Royal Logistic Corps Bomb Disposal team and South Yorkshire Police. The Royal Logistic Corps Bomb Disposal and South Yorkshire Police needed to make the area safe and decided on a controlled explosion in the evening once most of the walkers visiting the area would have returned home.

RLC confirmed that the shell was in fact a live HI Explosive left over from the shooting range that took place during WWII. The area was prepared for a controlled explosion of the shell resulting in quite a bang. This kind of find is not uncommon in the area around Langsett Reservoir, if you do come across anything that does look suspicious, please don't touch the device but mark the area if you can, phone the Police and give an accurate location of your find.

Music students present virtual gig Barnsley College Higher Education Popular Music students are putting their musical abilities to the test as they perform a virtual gig as part of their BA (Hons) Popular Music Degree course. To complete their studies, students must partake in ensemble work which is usually an end-of-year show at Barnsley College’s Electric Theatre. The students have come up with a plan to ensure that the COVID-19 outbreak doesn’t come between them and achieving their qualifications. Tutors have been helping students with their digital skills in order for them to perform the virtual gig after being inspired by social media showcasing housebound performances from local musicians and, in particular, the Global Citizen: One World Together At Home event organised by Lady Gaga. Andrew Toth, Popular Music student, said: “I have been responsible for creat-

ing the backing track using the guitar, bass and drums for the band to perform over. I have then mixed all the individual audio and video parts together to create the performance. “I have really enjoyed putting this together as it was a challenge and has definitely taught me that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and maintain a ‘cando’ attitude. All of my peers are hardworking, supportive and very willing to try new things in order to get the results we want.” Glen Sutton, Higher Education Music tutor, added: “I have had an amazing response from students who have worked together and compiled their own videos. Ultimately we wanted to raise awareness and show support during these hard and unusual times.” The HE Lockdown Sessions will be streamed on Friday 15 May on YouTube.

The university-level Creative Industries courses at Barnsley College Higher Education include Popular Music BA (Hons) (Performance and Production Routes), Fine Art Practice BA (Hons) and Games Design Foundation Degree (FdA). It’s not too late to apply to study at Barnsley College Higher Education this September. Deepcar Team Drugs Bust in Stannington

Woodhead pass

The stretch between Flouch Roundabout and the Gun Inn will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 6am, from Monday to Friday between Tuesday, May 26 and Friday, July 10. The work is part of a £5 million project to maintain and improve the busy trans-Pennine route linking Sheffield and Manchester, including resurfacing and drainage work, which Highways England says will deliver ‘safer, smoother and more dependable journeys’. As well as the overnight closures, Highways England plans to close the road for two weekends, from Friday, June 5 to Monday, June 8 and from Friday, July 3 to Monday, July 5.

Man charged for criminal damage Following an incident on Bradley Street, Crookes on the night of the 22nd and 23rd May, a man has been charged.

Police Officers from the Deepcar Team executed a drugs warrant on Tuesday 19 May at an address in Stannington.

Terry Hutley, aged 44, of Bradley Street, was charged with two counts of criminal damage, affray, outraging public decency and breach of court bail.

Officers recovered a substantial amount of drugs with an estimated street value of £40,000.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Message from South Yorkshire Police

Wild at Heart at Home

Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust’s Wild at Heart project has been transformed to enable project participants to stay connected to nature and each other during lockdown. Wild at Heart is a National Lottery Community Fund project that delivers friendly and supportive nature-based activity sessions for adults over 50 years, helping to improve well-being and personal resilience through building a connection to nature and meeting other people. The group usually meets on a weekly basis and delivers nature based activities such as wildlife walks, cooking, gardening and crafts. However since lockdown began the Wild at Heart project has had to be transformed to enable participants not to miss out on the regular contact with the team and other participants through friendly telephone calls, an active online community and regular nature activity packs posted to their homes, which is especially important for the participants who are not online.

Chief Constable, Stephen Watson

"After more than 30 years in policing, I am acutely aware that communication is key in times of crisis. On this basis, I want to ensure I provide you with the necessary clarity on what you can expect from your police in this new phase of our collective fight against the pandemic. "In truth, very little has changed, in terms of the policing response. We continue to take the approach of engaging, explaining and encouraging the public and reserve enforcement for the times when it is absolutely necessary and proportionate. "Now, if you encounter officers whilst you are out and about, they may enquire as to who you are with more so than the purpose of your journey. There are more permitted reasons for you to leave your house, but you are still advised to socially distance from anyone who is not a member of your household. "Your officers share your aims for a return to normality, they too wish to visit loved ones safe in the knowledge that this can cause no harm but we are not there yet. Adherence to these restrictions will help us to get there, so I urge you to continue to work with us to save lives. "No police officer joins the job with the aim to restrict the liberty of the law abiding but we do join to help save lives. This is our small but essential role in this battle against the virus. "Whilst we are only having to take formal action in respect of a very small and irresponsible minority, the fines for those who choose not to adhere are increasing. "Whilst the response to the pandemic remains a priority, so too does our core role of preventing and detecting crime. "This weekend we saw a number of shootings across Sheffield. We retain a number of highly experienced and dedicated detectives whose role it is to investigate this type of criminality and to bring people to justice. They have already made a number of arrests and seized a firearm. We also have increased patrols in the affected areas to provide reassurance to local residents. It is difficult for me to comment further at this stage of the investigation but please rest assured I, like you, have no tolerance of this dangerous and deplorable behaviour on the city’s streets."

One particular highlight is the new group project to make Wild at Heart Bunting, each participant was sent fabric and instructions through the post so they could decorate their own bunting triangle in their own way - a ‘group’ activity even whilst apart! The bun-

ting will be assembled when the group returns so they can celebrate what they have achieved together. Jenny King, Wild at Heart Project Officer said, “The last few weeks have been challenging times for everyone and we have found this more so for many of the people we work with from our groups, who, in some cases, were already lonely or socially isolated. Through friendly telephone calls, we can spot people who might benefit from being linked up to other organisations and local services that are providing extra support such as emergency food parcels. We are sharing content aimed at supporting and boosting wellbeing. We have created a beautiful Mindfulness in Nature video that features Sheffield locations – perfect for when we can’t get out as a group and we are sharing new things for our participants to try - we have even made dandelion fritters. Community has always been at the heart of Wild at Heart, and now more than ever people need that social connection. And although we are apart in this time, we can still be connected - to nature and to each other.”

Speedway ace keen to race when sport resumes ZAINE Kennedy, who failed to land a team spot this year, is keen to race in Britain when the sport can resume.

“There are always things you can improve on and I’m always learning how to better myself.

Aussie ace Kennedy impressed in his debut season with Sheffield last year but with the Tru Plant Tigers stepping up into the Premiership it left him looking for a new club.

“England is the place I want to be and I’m working really hard to make sure when the call does come I will be ready to hit the ground running.”

Sheffield are also keen to see him fixed up and, if the sport gets the green light to start in July or August some clubs may need to revise team plans – paving the way open for Kennedy.

Kennedy is working full-time in Australia but is ready to leave that to fulfil his UK dream.

He said: “I’m really keen to be back racing in England and the plan is to build up and be more prepared than I was first time around. “I think my average played a huge part in me not returning and I believe I did a decent job for Sheffield.

He said: “Things aren’t great right now around the world but hopefully there is some light at the end of the tunnel. “Luckily I’m still working back here in Australia which is paying the bills and keeping me busy. “With no racing taking place anywhere I haven’t really missed a season, which is good for me.”

National Flags - Logic Grid In the XX century, four countries (Angola, Bhutan, Qatar and Ukraine) adopted a new flag. Can you find out which country got a new flag in 1971? 1. The newest flags are the blue one and the Angolan one.

5. Red color wasn't chosen in 1969, nor it was paired with orange.

2. Bhutan either has a golden flag or adopted the flag in 1971. Bhutan's flag has no maroon.

6. The orange flag is older than Qatar's one. 7. Qatar's flag was adopted immediately after the flag containing gold.

3. Among the Ukrainian flag and the flag with maroon, one is from 1992 and the other contains white. 4. Black color wasn't chosen in 1971, nor by Ukraine. However, black was chosen before yellow.

SOS for local football Club Stocksbridge Park Steels FC have been assessing the financial impact on the club in the two months of the lockdown period, normally at this time of the year they would be preparing for next season, with plans in place for pitch and ground maintenance, kit requirements pre- season friendlies etc, but due to lockdown these plans are now on hold.

The club’s income streams which consist of sponsors, advertising revenue and the monthly 500 club draw have all stopped completely. Other fundraising events like the annual golf day , pre- season friendlies against the local professional clubs and a planned sportsman dinner will also fall victim to the lockdown rules . Two of our three main sponsors have decided not to renew their agreements , and the third is reducing their contribution all due to the economic downturn, the same can be said for the businesses who contribute towards the advertising revenue.

On top of all this the club’s tractor suffered a major breakdown and has had to have repairs costing £4000 , and vandals broke into the training ground and damaged the mobile goal posts incurring more unnecessary costs.

well in their respective leagues, with these young players hoping to follow the production line into league football that Harrison Biggins at Fleetwood and Jamie Vardy and many more before them have made.

The football club doesn’t qualify for any of the government Grant’s that are available, and F.A. bailout money doesn’t cover the Northern Premier League.

Park Steels have started a range of fundraising initiatives with a crowdfunding page ,auction items etc and Former chairman and club founder Allen Bethel has agreed to help club secretary Mick Grimmer collect money around Stocksbridge, for those that can’t access the Fundraising page

This is the biggest challenge Park Steels has faced since it was formed in 1986 by Allen Bethel when he took four juniors off the street and started coaching them.

With the future regeneration plans for the town ,to have a club still at the highest level bringing in support would be a good advertisement for the Town.

These are unprecedented times with no sign yet when the end will be or when the new season is likely to start.

Stocksbridge Park Steels FC needs the support of the local community and surrounding areas more than ever .

However the club is determined to maintain the present level of football, Park Steels are South Yorkshires highest placed team in the football pyramid, they provide football for over four hundred junior players, their reserve and under eighteen teams were doing
