Supertram link bus re-instated Stockbridge residents may be pleased to hear that SL/SL1 bus service will soon be back on the roads. The popular service ran direct between Stocksbridge and the Middlewood tram stop, but the service was withdrawn as Staegcoach made changes to the operation following the implementation of social distancing measures. New social distancing measures mean that buses can only carry a fraction of the number of passengers they would have done so before the pandemic, whilst also needing their vehicles to cover essential journeys which inevitably means fewer services elsewhere. This meant Stagecoach withdrew the SL1 and SL1a service, instead replaced by a revised 57 and 57a service to run between Hillsborough and Stocksbridge.

“I’m delighted that our conversations with Stagecoach have provided so fruitful and that the SL service will once again be running between Stocksbridge and Hillsborough. This was something I know local residents wanted to see and I was glad to take-up their cause. “Obviously we are in incredibly difficult times and Stagecoach, like all the city’s bus operators, will need to make sure their staff and passengers are safe and that social distancing measures are properly in place. This will of course affect services but I felt this was one route which was too crucial to Stocksbridge residents, and I’m glad this decision has been reversed". Local MP Miriam Cates who has been a long-time campaigner of local transport said

Following this pressure it has been announced that from Monday 15 June the SL/ SL1a service will be back again.

“I have been informed by SYPTE that the SL1/SL1a service between Middlewood and Stocksbridge will be restored from Monday 15th June. This follows discussions between Stagecoach and SYPTE, and a concerted effort by local campaigners, myself, and Sheffield City Region to reverse the unacceptable decision to remove the service. I am hopeful that this decision is a permanent one.

Councillor Julie Grocutt, Labour councillor for Stocksbridge and Upper Don:

I also understand that 'Tramlink' single tickets can be used on the SL1/SL1a service.

However, Labour councillors were not happy with this arrangement and lobbied Stagecoach and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to get this route reinstated.

The removal of buses serving Stocksbridge and the villages of the Upper Don Valley to increase frequencies in the city centre is not something that our community should have to accept. We already suffer from a lack of public transport options, and further reductions to our service had a significant impact on people's ability to travel to work and access essential services. I will now press for the return of through services to Sheffield city centre on the 57 route to ensure that we are not reliant on changing at Hillsborough to reach more distant destinations. I would like to thank all the local residents who contacted me to raise their concerns and put pressure on Stagecoach and the SYPTE. Improving public transport is one of my top priorities and I will continue to work for a better deal for Penistone and Stocksbridge and due to capacity issues the service will not run as frequent as it did before the pandemic, but a bus will call at each stop every two hours until 5 o’clock, Monday to Saturday. The new timetable can be viewed online at the Travel South Yorkshire website - www. travelsouthyorkshire.com/serviechange

Market under new ownership despite COVID-19 This week sees the opening of all non essential shops, some aspects of life are getting back to some normality. Meanwhile in Chapeltown, the Market which has been in decline for many years, has been given a new lease of life. Five local residents decided that despite the current COVID-19 challenges, they would take matters into their own hands and formed Chapelgreen Community Enterprise, a NOT for Profit organisation that has taken over the running of Chapeltown Market for the benefit of the community. Co-Founder Paul Swift says “I am so excited to be part of this amazing venture. Real change happens when local people take the lead. National governments deal with National issues, but local change happens when local people grab

the bull by the horns and do things!” Thanks to the help and support of the Chapeltown Working Men’s club and the Sheffield Social Enterprise Network, the new Market plans to launch in July under the new name of TRAXX. The Friday fruit and Veg market will carry on as normal, but plans are being worked on to have a full market on Saturdays and a Christmas weekend market is also in the development stage. If the current global pandemic has done anything, it's brought a renewed sense of community and the benefits brought by using local shops and buying local. Anyone who is interested in having a stall at the new market, you can contact TRAXX by emailing yourmarket@ traxxsheffield.co.uk

Good news! We are open. Throughout the closure, we have been working hard to make sure our store is as safe as possible for customers and employees. We now have social distancing signage, hand sanitiser stations and we are using a specialist upholstery spray to treat display beds, sofas, chairs and other upholstery. The spray is applied periodically and contains ingredients that are effective in use against the virus. In addition, we are also launching an individual appointment system and ‘virtual walk around the store’, bookable by appointment. We are open as usual and no appointment is necessary between 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 4.30pm on Sunday. Appointments are available between 4.30pm to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday. Contact us for more details on this or check on our website.

YOUR SAFETY AND THAT OF OUR STAFF IS OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY!

www.looklocal.org.uk

Added to this, the location of both our stores means that our customers will benefit from lower congestion than might be found on a busy retail park, shopping centre or high street. In our experience, customers seeking to purchase large household pieces tend to do so on an annual, rather than weekly basis, so our expected footfall is significantly lower than is found in numerous other retail outlets. This makes it straightforward for us to implement social distancing measures without great disruption to staff or visitors in-store. Our large floor space also helps in this regard. We are very excited to be welcoming our customers back into store and hope to see you soon!

on Mortomley Lane, High Green, from 9:30am - 11:30am Monday - Friday where drop offs adhere to all social distancing. LOCAL AUTHOR PUBLISHES A MENTAL HEALTH BESTSELLER A local author has launched a book to help people struggling with anxiety and it has gone straight to an Amazon Best Seller. Ged Jenkins-Omar, who lives in Oughtibridge and is an ambassador for the mental health charity Mind has written the book following a personal battle with anxiety and panic. Having fought with anxiety since his late teens Ged Jenkins-Omar has tried and tested lots of coping strategies as the years have passed by. Having been on the edge and stared into the abyss with the depression that resulted from it. Ged is now married with two children, a Fundraising Manager at Thornberry Animal Sanctuary and wants to help others who are struggling, to manage their anxiety better. Research suggests that around 1 in 6 people in the UK will suffer from anxiety in any given week and 1 in 4 will suffer from a mental health problem in any given year. This is something that has significantly increased since the

Coronavirus lockdown with existing sufferers feeling worse and people who haven’t suffered before experiencing negative symptoms, thoughts and feelings. On releasing the book ‘Help with Anxiety’ in May, the book now tops the Amazon charts for the Mental Diseases & Disorders category. The book is aimed at both men and women and is suitable for teenagers and adults. There are 150 tips and strategies focussing on relaxation techniques, distraction techniques, strategies to take control, tips around diet and nutrition and much more. There are paperback and Ebook versions available on Amazon and there is an audiobook in the pipeline for the start of July. If you would like to purchase the book please visit Amazon.co.uk and type in ‘Help with Anxiety Ged Jenkins-Omar’. Ged Jenkins-Omar, said “I started writing this book around 8 months ago, long before Coronavirus decided to take over

the UK. It has been challenging as I have had to write it around working full time and being the best dad and husband, I can be. Having battled with anxiety and panic on and off since my late teens I wanted to write the book I wish I was given to me at the start of my journey with it. Anxiety is not a one size fits all mental health illness and neither is coping with it. You need to try lots of different strategies that suit you and your life and see what works for you. I can still have difficult days and symptoms like everyone does but I put my strategies in place and manage my thoughts, symptoms and feelings the best I can.” Ryan Ridgway (Former NHS 111 Manager and Mental Health First Aid England Trainer), said: “Help with Anxiety has been written by a fellow sufferer and I have no doubt that within this book you will find some relief from your troublesome symptoms of anxiety.”

assessments and implement robust safety measures before they reopen and we urge employers to work with the union to ensure their staff have a proper say in that process.

Paddy Lillis – Usdaw General Secretary says: “The safety of our members and the public is our top priority, so Usdaw worked with the British Retail Consortium on joint safety guidance for shops. Retailers have to publish risk

“Importantly shops should not be allowed to remain open if retailers do not follow the guidance and operate safely. We will continually monitor the situation and support our members as they return to work.

“However, safety in stores needs customer co-operation and I am shocked that abuse of shopworkers has doubled during the Coronavirus emergency. It is a disgrace that a minority behave this way, at a time when we should be pulling together to get through this appalling pandemic. At no time should abuse be a part of the job. Shopworkers deserve respect.”

Sporting chance... Sporting Chance Sheffield have had to adapt from face to face support and engagement to on line activities. Fox Valley prepares for more stores re-opening The team at north Sheffield’s outdoor shopping centre Fox Valley are preparing for more stores to re-open from next Monday. (June 15th) A number of key essential retailers have traded at the centre throughout the lockdown including Boots, Aldi, Home Bargains and John Crawshaw Butchers and last week the centre’s popular outdoor market also re-opened. Next week will see the centre welcome back some of the stores which have had their doors closed since March 23rd and the Fox Valley team are working with all businesses to ensure a safe re-opening for the centre’s staff and shoppers. On Monday (June 15th) Sports Direct, Edinburgh Woollen Mills and Seasalt will re-open at Fox Valley as well as EE and Vape HQ. JoJo Maman Bebe launched a click and collect service this week and will open its doors to shoppers on Wednesday 17th June. Sandersons will open later in the week on Thursday 18th June as will Hummingbird Bridal Studio (by appointment only). Fox

Valley’s Next store is expected to open Saturday 20th June and Regatta is working towards June 22nd. A number of other stores and café’s at Fox Valley are yet to announce their reopening plans and the restaurants at Fox Valley are awaiting further guidance from the government before they fully re-open. Ponti’s Italian Kitchen will be launching a take-away service next week and McGilveray’s is already operating on a takeaway basis. All new opening hours will be updated on the Fox Valley website and shoppers are being asked to check the website for individual store times before planning their trip. Stores will have restrictions on the numbers of customers allowed in at any one time and shoppers are being asked to respect the 2m distance throughout the centre. Fox Valley is owned and managed by South Yorkshire property company Dransfield Properties Ltd.

Covid-19 marathon challenge By Doris Stubbs

This is an amazing and we would like to thank all the people who have responded. As money has come in it has been immediately sent to Grace's brother,Spencer and his wife, Peninah, who manage the scheme for us in the village and look after the 19 children in the hostel. A letter of thanks has been received from them.

Operations Director, Medi Parry-Williams, said: “We are working closely with all our returning store teams to ensure that we have a smooth and safe return to trading next week. “We would ask customers to plan their journeys and to check opening times before they visit. We are really fortunate here at Fox Valley that the centre has been designed with space in mind, so we do have wide walkways and attractive landscaped areas which give our shoppers plenty of space. “We’re looking forward to welcoming our shoppers back in this first phase of stores re-opening and the safety of our visitors and staff will of course be our priority.” To check store opening times at Fox Valley please visit www.foxvalleysheffield. co.uk and visit the stores page which will be regularly updated. Last week 140 families were given food parcels consisting of maize flour ,beans, salt and soap. As we have been unable to organise our usual Fund Raising Activities an Online Quiz was organised by Andy and Elana Kemp - the son and daughter-in-law of 2 of our trustees, Mandy and Martyn Kemp.over 70 people took part from many parts of England, Belgium, Germany and Ireland and £1100 was raised. This will be used to help to continue to feed the children when they return to school as many of the crops have been washed away in the recent floods and people have lost employment.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ¿OOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Bus service.... Dear look local I’m sorry this again is about the reduction of the bus service for Stocksbridge and Deepcar, but I feel its very important and the issue should be raised with local council. The previous tramlink service we had, did have its faults but all in all was a good stable service needed for the area.

Your Letters

Issue 1118

I refer to last week’s anonymous letter which states that ‘Never in the history of our local public transport has Stocksbridge/Deepcar been deprived of any through service to Sheffield.’

has been done for the cost of driving lessons is the solution for folk he too is correct.

I’m being pedantic here, but just to put the record straight, back in the 1940’s and 50’s the bus from Stocksbridge travelled only as far as Hillsborough, where passengers bound for Sheffield had to catch the old fashioned trams in order to complete their journey.

I vaguely remember travelling on these trams, I’ll say that if this is temporary due to but I imagine it would be before the lifetime COVID-19, then it is a safe and good move of most of your readers, though even in those and the service should have been reduced primitive times we had three buses per hour, several months ago, but to change the service which made it a considerably better service in the future to reflect this will be ridiculous. than we are getting today. The big issue is reducing the time the public spend in the enclosed space! And this is inMargaret Pazdzierski creasing it, so increasing the risk of infection as people need to stay on the bus longer as it goes around the whole village This is a lifeline for a lot of people in the area who rely on public transport, and to reduce the service is a terrible. The elderly rely on the service, and comuters to and from work. The change Permenantly would be a terrible decision, and very distressing causing problems people really don’t need in these present times. Thank you community rehabilitation worker NHS, Michelle Marsden

Supertram link Buses Dear Editor.

I can’t agree agree more with Mr Lance Northcliffe of Deepcar and the letter of name and address supplied in your 11th of June 2020 edition. Mr Northcliffe is so right in his summing up regarding the current Stagecoach bus situation. To quote ‘ If Stagecoach does not want to serve the Stocksbridge and Deepcar community the contract should be taken from them and given to a provider who supports the local people ‘. Also when another reader comments that thinking of buying a car once the research

Response to Lowood Committee In response to the statement of Lowood Committee, there are a number of brief points that we would wish to raise in response. This matter is not about the situation the club was in 11 years ago, it is about events that have prevailed in recent times that raises serious questions as to what is taking place at the club with the lack of transparency and accountability for decisions with one person controlling and running matters.

The mention of anarchy and the testimony that the club has £100,000 in the bank is interesting, given that the steward John Clayton is popular with the members so why is no credit being given to John here, but more concerning would be ‘ Why does the committee want to remove John if the club is doing so well? Surely, the committee who have not been elected for years are accountable to the heartbeat of the club, which are the members. The committee serve by the grace of the members and members have a right to know openly with facts and truth as to what is behind this decision? This is therefore a challenge to the committee, to allow an EGM to take place, where in

1954-2020

He and his beloved wife of 43 years, Hilary, began Inyerface Arts in 2003 after feeling frustration that children were being excluded from music and arts opportunities because of finances. They have been determined to provide as many opportunities as they can to support music education, putting on concerts and performances. After moving to Deepcar 13 years ago, he has worked closely supporting Steel Valley Beacon. He then turned his attention to reinstating the music festival, which has grown from strength to strength over the past 3 years. Steve died in hospital after a short illness on the day that the Virtual Valley Music Festival was launched on Youtube, a project which he had been deeply involved with, along with

an open and transparent way this matter and other related relevant matters can be subject to the scrutiny of the club members and as stated, following this, a vote can be taken on whether the committee retain the confidence of its membership. If the committee have nothing to hide or fear they will not seek to limit debate and refuse to consider certain items tabled by members which is currently what they are doing. From the steering committee on behalf of John Clayton Steward of Lowoods club and his family

If anyone has any doubts in a fair society as to who is right here then the people who are challenging this can show a vast amount of evidence and information that has been ignored by the committee which brings into question the motives behind this decision to remove John?

Steve Osborn Valley Music Festival Director and pillar of the community, Steve Osborn passed away on the 13th June. Much loved by family and friends alike. his son-in-law Steve. Many of the 300 performers who would have taken part in the actual festival had the pandemic not struck, took part. It is a fitting tribute to Steve, who along with his wife Hilary were the driving force behind the festival. The response to our JustGiving appeal to expand our scholarship programme for young people’s music tuition has been wonderful, with many donors paying tribute to Steve who hundreds of people knew fondly through his selfless, awe-inspiring community work. His smiling face and friendly manner to all will be very much missed. Steve’s drive and passion derived from his unwavering principle that the arts can make a difference and can change a person’s life. Hilary, daughters Kate and Charlotte, sons in law Steve and Barry and grandchildren Jessie, Amaia, Joe and Elodie have been overwhelmed by the fond memories and appreciation of his efforts. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ valley-music-festival

RENEWABLE ENERGY 2 years of campaigning from student volunteers have convinced the university to move to 100% renewable energy

The University of Sheffield has just announced that it will now use energy generated only by solar, wind, and hydro power. This is a huge cause for celebration for the UoS Clean Energy Switch Campaign group- a group of student volunteers who have dedicated hundreds of hours to fight for a sustainable future. They have ended up influencing how the University spends millions of pounds every year.

For years, the University of Sheffield bought its electricity from Drax Group, which generates electricity by burning coal and biofuels (Drax deforestorestation and shipping of biofuels is proven to be high carbon), and is at the forefront of UK corporate greenwashing. Students researched the university's previous energy supplier’s environmental impact and costs. They lobbied for a more cost effective and environmentally friendly energy provider. The volunteers presented this information to university decision makers, sat on groups making recommendations to the highest governing body of the University, and ultimately triggered the change in supplier. George Coiley, a environmental politics PhD student:

“I’ve put countless hours into this campaign, and two years later the University has at last made the right decision, one that is more aligned with the demands of climate justice. While there is much more to be done both in Sheffield and in the wider sector, we hope our success shows other institutions that positive steps can be achieved right now.” Peter Nolan, an undergraduate reading Environmental Science:

“A racial analysis of climate change reveals that it has been primarily caused by affluent white people, while those who suffer its consequences are primarily black, indigenous and people of colour. To be anti-racist, our universities and institutions must dismantle this exploitation. A small part is decarbonising our energy systems in the UK.” Maria, a PhD candidate in sustainable agriculture: “As an international student from a developing country, I never thought that I could have much impact on how things are being run. Being part of this team of incredibly passionate volunteers has really empowered me to speak out for climate justice and inspire others to do the same!"

Face coverings needed for public transport New rules requiring passengers to wear a face covering on their journey will come into force on public transport across England from Monday 15 June The advice is clear that people should continue to avoid taking public transport where possible, but by mandating the use of face cover-

ings Government is asking passengers to play their part in helping to protect each other as the numbers of people travelling gradually start to rise across the country, following the careful easing of restrictions when it’s safe to do so. Over 3,000 extra staff from British Transport Police, Net-

work Rail, Train Operating Companies and Transport for London will be deployed from Monday at key transport hubs and interchanges across England – providing dedicated reassurance, advice and friendly assistance to people as they follow social distancing guidance.

They will also support existing staff by helping to manage congestion. Alongside this, hundreds of thousands of face coverings will be handed out for passenger use at many locations across the rail network in England from Monday. The one-off initiative, which will run for several days at a

number of stations, will see coverings provided free of charge to support passengers and help them travel safely. Under the changes, operators will be able to stop passengers who refuse to follow the rules from travelling and direct them to leave services. The police and Transport for London authorised person-

nel will also be able to issue fixed penalty notices of £100, or £50 if paid in 14 days. Exemptions for the use of face coverings will apply to those with certain health conditions, disabled people and children under the age of 11.

Rugby club adapting‌ Speedway... The current pandemic has affected everyone’s way of life, & Stocksbridge Rugby Club are no exception. Unable to complete their play off fixtures at the end of last season, Stocksbridge have also been denied the opportunity of partaking in the Spring Cup, where they were runners up last season. Plans are in place to commence pre-season training as soon as the club can agree certain control measures in line with RFL guidance. When the new season does start, Stocksbridge Rugby will need to appoint a new 1st XV Captain as the inspirational Ricky B Rowett has chosen to stand down due to family commitments, leaving current vice captain Adam R Frith as favourite to replace

him. Rumours also persist that Club Supremo, Rhys Keenan has relinquished the Head Coach role to concentrate on his own playing career, now he is free of injury. Club Chairman Andy Bell has thanked both for their commitment & contribution to the playing side. Off the field, the members have been busy preparing for the upcoming season with a vigorous maintenance programme on the playing pitches, see photo. Volunteers have also carried out vital refurbishments in the clubhouse, with an eye on any potential reopening dates. All within social distancing guideline, of course.

CUP winner Craig Pendlebury has revealed how he didn’t feel ready to join Sheffield in 1974 – but went on to live the dream.

One of the main fund raising, & social events of the calendar Year, the Annual Club Dinner has also had to be cancelled this Year. The Club has a history of attracting big name speakers to create interest, & the funds usually raised will be sorely missed this Year. The majority of the General Committee will remain as previous, so the Club is in a relatively good place to continue, when conditions allow.

Pendlebury, now based in Australia, has added a tough of retro to the new issue of ‘Tiger Talk’, the fortnightly club programme during the season delay. His first season was 1974 – and he says he was prepared to give it a month to see how he got on! Said Craig: “I really got thrown into deep end in 1974 when the Swedish riders were banned, Sheffield’s Bengt Larsson was one of them. “I had only ridden in I think seven second division meetings for Barrow in late 73 and was all set to go back there in 74 on loan, but I got the call from the management about two weeks before the season started. “They said they wanted me to ride for the Tigers, I said I wasn’t nearly ready for first division racing but agreed to give it a go for a month, I ended up the season with an average of just under six.â€? Current Tigers star Kyle Howarth has swapped his bike for the building site as he looks to plug the gap in income during this time of no racing and is keeping fit.

Most of the 1st team squad have been training at home, with big 2nd rower, slammin Sam Whitaker & scrum half, that man Adam Frith running 5k per day for a Month to raise funds for the NHS. They have raised over ÂŁ1300 so far, with money still coming in.

Tiger Talk also includes an all-time Sheffield 1-7 with club co-promoter Damien Bates – with some interesting choices – colleague Peter Mole addresses the latest situation and there’s a stunning centre page poster of club hero Ricky Ashworth. It’s on sale now for delivery on or before Monday June 22 from the publishers https://www. curtis-sport.com/online-store/Sheffield-Tigersc51359224 where all previous issues remain in stock to complete the set of what is sure to be a unique collection in history.
