dAD WAS IN COMA WITH 40 PERCENT BURNS - PAGE 06
Barnsley College’s annual end-of-year Art and Design exhibition is on show to the general public with a new look.
The exhibition is traditionally held in the College’s Electric Theatre but, due to the impact of COVID-19, this is the first year that the exhibition has been created and displayed virtually.

Work produced by students for their final major project of the Level 3 Extended Diploma Art and Design course is on display, featuring drawing, painting, print-making and sculpture, installation works, photography, animation, architectural design, textiles and crafts-based work.
Students finished the 10-week project working at home due to lockdown. They chose to explore themes including poetry, anxiety, LGBTQ+, natural forms and textures through abstraction, British birdlife, mortality and abortion via images, videos and audio recordings. Student Charlotte Ogley-Baxter said: “The virtual exhibition is really cool and full of amazing artwork with lots of visuals standing out. I am happy to see everyone’s artwork and our hard work shown online. It’s an interactive and creative exhibition so it’s worth clicking on the link!” To view the exhibition, visit www.barnsley. ac.uk/art

Good news! We are open. Throughout the closure, we have been working hard to make sure our store is as safe as possible for customers and employees. We now have social distancing signage, hand sanitiser stations and we are using a specialist upholstery spray to treat display beds, sofas, chairs and other upholstery. The spray is applied periodically and contains ingredients that are effective in use against the virus. In addition, we are also launching an individual appointment system and ‘virtual walk around the store’, bookable by appointment. We are open as usual and no appointment is necessary between 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 4.30pm on Sunday. Appointments are available between 4.30pm to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday. Contact us for more details on this or check on our website.
YOUR SAFETY AND THAT OF OUR STAFF IS OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY!

Added to this, the location of both our stores means that our customers will benefit from lower congestion than might be found on a busy retail park, shopping centre or high street. In our experience, customers seeking to purchase large household pieces tend to do so on an annual, rather than weekly basis, so our expected footfall is significantly lower than is found in numerous other retail outlets. This makes it straightforward for us to implement social distancing measures without great disruption to staff or visitors in-store. Our large floor space also helps in this regard. We are very excited to be welcoming our customers back into store and hope to see you soon!

Thurgoland Gala – Down but not forgotten Like many social events this year, the Thurgoland Gala has had to be cancelled as part of the government ‘lock down’ package. But just because the gala has been cancelled it hasn’t stopped the local community from looking at alternative solutions to getting people out into the community in small, ‘social pods’ for a little fun with a ‘Hero Scarecrow Trail’ competition. The idea is for families to get together and create a scarecrow that looks like a 1super hero and display it in their own garden, outside their house or they can be erected at either Thurgoland C of E school or the Thurgoland recreational grounds. This will take place over the weekend of the 4th and the 5th of July as this s the weekend that the Thurgoland Gala would have taken place this year.
A ‘Scarecrow Map’ will then be produced showing the location of all the participants which will be available from local outlets, such as Thorpe's’ garage, free of charge. This will provide a route map for local residents to walk or drive around the Village as a family, giving a score to their favourite three. These scores should be submitted to organiser whose details will be on the trail map supplied. Cash prizes of £50 will be awarded to the overall winner, £30 for second place and £20 for third. There is also a separate competition for the people that are doing the scoring, based on the feedback given. Full details will be on the back of the trail maps. “The Thurgoland Gala is a long established tradition in the Village and one that we cannot allow to be forgotten, despite these difficult times,” explains Rachel Marshall, organiser of this event.
“This is just one of possibly a few initiatives that will, hopefully, unite the village in some small way over the Gala weekend and will also provide a very visual display of ‘community spirit’ for the young and old alike,” she added. It is hoped that those following the ‘Hero Scarecrow Trail’ will also take part and use this as an opportunity to wear their own fancy dress costumes. To enter a scarecrow design, applications should be by email giving your name and where the scarecrow will be displayed. This must be received by Rachel before the end of June to guarantee being shown on the map. Please send your submission to rachel.drury@hotmail.co.uk

complete a spreadsheet by Friday this week setting out how they expect to spend the government Infection Protection Control (IPC) grant from 13 May to 23 September this year.
The council is asking care homes to provide information and complete paperwork which is being asked for by central government. This is to make sure that all care homes prove they meet the government conditions for receiving financial support.
Care homes can spend their IPC grant on the staffing related costs of the important work they are doing to prevent infection.
The letter last week outlined the need for care homes to
In the letter, care homes were also reminded to continue to update the ‘government tracker’ which is a government requirement of the grant. Early guidance from the government was that this
needed to be updated daily. We have, however, agreed locally to minimise the burden on providers and therefore the letter on Friday confirmed that the ‘government tracker’ must be updated on a weekly basis and only more often if changes occur. George Lindars-Hammond, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Sheffield City Council said: “We know that care homes are under a lot of pressure and that there is, and will continue to be, more form-filling in order to receive funding to help them through COVID-19.

Dad was in coma after horrific accident
He suffered first and second degree burns after an accident at The Commercial in Chapeltown Story: Alex Grove
A dad-of-three spent two weeks in a coma after 40 per cent of his body was set alight in a horrific accident at a gin distillery in Chapeltown. Paul Harrison, 33, suffered first and second degree burns to his hands, arms, face and torso after alcohol sprayed out of a still at Sheffield Distillery, which is at the back of The Commercial pub in Chapeltown, Sheffield.

Mr Harrison, who lives in Barnsley with his wife Hannah, 35, and their children, was rushed to Northern General Hospital before he was transferred to a specialist burns unit at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield after the accident on May 26. After suffering extensive burns to almost half of his body, Mr Harrison had to be put in an induced coma and his wife was only able to see him once coronavirus restrictions had been lifted.
Recalling the moment she found out about the accident, which was initially thought to be a gas explosion, Mrs Harrison told South Yorkshire Live: "When I was told what happened I was initially only told that he had burnt his hands and I wasn't aware of the full extent of his injuries. "My first thought was to get down to the distillery and get there before the ambulance but then I realised it was worse than I'd thought." At this point, Mr Harrison was still conscious but after being taken to hospital it was decided that he would be put in a medically induced coma to protect his airway and help his pain management. He spent the next fortnight in a state of unconsciousness and due to the strict coronavirus lockdown rules, Mrs Harrison was forced to stay away from her husband and await developments from doctors at Pinderfields. Mr Harrison was eventually brought out of the coma after a fortnight and
could soon be released from hospital to continue his recovery at home. As well as recovering from the burns, he has had to get used to walking again after lying still in a coma for two weeks but Mrs Harrison says his burns are healing well. "He suffered quite extensive burns but a lot of them have now gone and it's just down to his arms and hands," she said. "He had skin grafts within days of being received at Pinderfields and he knows exactly what has happened there's no psychological blackouts. "He wants to be at home and he is pushing himself to get there but even when he's home he will have to go into hospital as an outpatient. There's many steps and there's still a long road to recovery." A report is being carried out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) into the malfunction and until that is concluded, Mr Harrison will not know how the accident happened.

10,000 calls to coronavirus helpline
Minerva Learning Trust is a successful Multi Academy Trust based in Sheffield. They work in partnership with four fantastic secondary schools (Ecclesfield School, Handsworth Grange Community Sports College, High Storrs School, Stocksbridge High School) and a brilliant college (Chapeltown Academy) with the ethos to change the life chances of young people. As a Trust, they wanted to find a way of working together as one community to raise funds to support students’ families facing hardship as a result of COVID19. The last few months have undoubtedly been incredibly challenging for us all, but by bringing their vision of ‘working together’ to life for the good of students and families, they know they can make a difference. From this commitment and passion to make positive change (and to have a little fun and friendly competition between colleagues on the way), the idea of the Minerva FUNdraiser was born. In under three weeks, The Minerva FUNdraiser has already raised over £1000, something of which they are incredibly proud and keen to build on. The money raised, which will be split equally amongst the five schools, will be used to support families struggling to access to food, uniform and other school equipment. In April, each school spent some time developing an idea for a brilliant fundraiser. From there, a team was formed to coordinate the programme of activities, and since May, staff, governors and trustees have been busy getting involved. There really is something for everyone; from the Ecco Quiz and the Handsworth Bake Off, to Stocksbridge’s Bingo night, the Chapeltown Academy run/walk/ cycle challenge and not forgetting the famous High Storrs Hike.
The Coronavirus Community Support Helpline set up by Sheffield City Council in response to the Coronavirus crisis hits 10,000 calls since it began on 27th March. During this time, the helpline has provided people with a wide range of support relating to the current pandemic. This has included: - Arranging emergency food parcel deliveries for people who have been self-isolating and with no way of getting food.
The Trust would love help from their local communities to raise even more and further support their families. You can donate to the fund via this link: https:// www.justgiving.com/campaign/MinervaFUNdraiser or follow us on Twitter @ MinervaTrust for more information.
- Arranging for people to get help with shopping.
The Trust is truly grateful to everyone who has contributed so far. With your help, they can keep going and make even more of a difference.
- Supporting those feeling isolated via our befriending service.
- Arranging the collection and delivery of medication.
- Putting people in touch with local food banks. Terry Fox, Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council and Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources said: “10,000 calls taken highlights a brilliant effort by everyone involved in providing this helpline, and I would like to thank everyone concerned for the vital, ongoing support which they are providing to the people of Sheffield in these very challenging times.” Head of Customer Services at Sheffield City Council Paul Taylor, said: “The helpline was set up very quickly as the effects of Coronavirus started to be felt across the city, and it has played an important part in the fantastic joined-
up response from a number of Council and voluntary sector teams in helping and supporting our citizens who have been affected by the current situation.” Mr Taylor added: “A number of our team members made the switch at short notice from other duties to work on the new helpline and very quickly learned what they needed to know in order to provide the support people need. Calls to the helpline have fallen over the last few weeks but we are still receiving around 100 calls per day on most days and so there is still a clear need for it.” The Coronavirus Community Support Helpline number is 0114 2734567. It is open seven days a week between 8.45am and 4.45pm

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

POEM There is no flour so I can’t bake pass some time and bake a cake. Shopping like it’s never been known , get the stuff and straight back home. No Village Fayre on 4th July, let’s hope the sun still shines. We’ll miss the stalls, the games ,the fun, meeting with friends for tea and a bun. No classic cars or carousel, can’t look for hidden treasures. No donkey rides or hook the ducks, we’ll miss these simple pleasures. Times like this we’ve never known, the loss of lives, the fear. Let’s hope we all stay safe and well and we’ll see you all next year.

daughters aged 7 and 5 So they could ride their bikes and still maintain social distancing, the 5 year old was keen to demonstrate how she had learned to ride without stabilisers.
South Yorkshire, and my thanks go to the Mayor Dan Jarvis and Clive Betts MP for their work in compiling it. In my own constituency of Penistone and Stocksbridge we have seen first hand the problems of the current system, with routes such as the SL1 being withdrawn with no notice leaving people stranded and unable to get to work or access vital services.
Whilst on the footpath four off-road motorbike bandits raced out of the woods narrowly missing my 7 year old granddaughter, she fell off her bike, her 5 year old sister then threw herself onto the floor and they where both crying uncontrollably, the noise of the motorcycles and their actions terrified them. Did the lead motorcycle bandit stop to see if he had injured the child, you can guess the answer, instead they continued to circulate in the woods and the paths in a scene that resembled a wagon train being circulated in an old Wild West movie. These people have no respect for authority and other human beings in their lust for satisfying their own enjoyment,. If they have brothers/sisters,parents or grandparents and should read this letter they should reflect on how they ruined someone else’s day And terrified two little girls just wanting a quite bike ride When will the police put a stop to this vandalism

I am pleased that SYPTE will be properly integrated into the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority. Our devolution agenda sees transport as an important part of levelling up our region, and having elected authority over buses is crucial to this. But regardless of who runs or oversees the services, buses must be accountable to their communities and responsive to their needs. As a local MP I look forward to being more involved in the process going forward and improving public transport across the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency. Miriam Cates MP

BOLSTERSTONE VILLAGE FAYRE As with most events in the area Bolsterstone Village Fayre will not be held this July. It will of course be missed not only from the aspect of the financial boost to St Mary’s, the charities supported by the income from the event and the enjoyment of all who attend. However the cancellation of such events pales into insignificance when compared to the devastation and loss of lives the pandemic has wrought throughout not only this country but world wide. Over the years the Fayre has gained the reputation for meeting up with those who we might not otherwise see but could guarantee that they would be in the village on the first Saturday in July. The event started as a Church Garden Party in the grounds of the Vicarage in Heads Lane in 1913 raising the grand sum of £10. Since then of course many changes have taken place. In 1963 when it was decided the event had outgrown the Vicarage grounds, the stalls were moved into the village square and the Church Garden Party became the Village Fayre. We would like to thank the Fayre Committee and our dedicated team of helpers for their never failing commitment and our loyal supporters who have made the event the success it has always been. Let’s hope for better times ahead and we’ll hope to be back as usual in 2021 Carol Webster and Kathryn Cooke
Westwood plantation I am appalled at what I witnessed today in the Westwood Plantation only a stones throw away from the South Yorkshire police garage. I have not seen my daughter and grandchildren since the beginning of lockdown, my daughter and her husband are employed by the NHS and are frontline workers. As it was Father’s Day we arranged to meet up in the Westwood plantation so our two grand-
Lowoods committee reply In response to the Steering Committee representing John Clayton (ex Steward of Lowood Club) and his family. Yes, this matter is about 2010 when the Club was on the verge of closing, where were the Steering Committee members? You could have taken over then but presumably you couldn’t be bothered and if you couldn’t be bothered then, why the sudden change of heart? Well clearly it’s all about John and his family and friends after all they keep trying to boost his achievements at the expense of the Committee. Lets look at the facts, John started around 5th October 2018 our Bank Balance was £83,705.24, so John had nothing to do with any of our expenditure or accumulation of funds to that point. At the end of 2018 after John had been Steward for just 3 Months, our bar sales for the year were £235.608. At the end of 2019 after John had been Steward for 12 Months our bar sales for the year were £223.306. Hardly a staggering performance. And finally, on John’s last day our Bank Balance was £98,416.38.
While the club has been closed the car park and veranda is being used by youths for drinking/drugs. The rubbish is a disgrace, and there have been reports of People on the roof. The police have been contacted numerous times but to no avail. On other occasions people have been climbing into Wetherspoons beer garden to party. Do we not have police patrols in Chapeltown anymore?

With regard to you wanting to know why John has been dismissed, he can tell you himself, it’s no secret to him. If we can legally give that information, we will. Now this next point really is laughable and links to the first paragraph. You say that the Committee has not been elected for years well here is the secret……………every year a Committee application form(A4) is posted on the wall (2 weeks before the AGM) and stays in the entrance hall for a further period of 1 week before the ballot and the only reason we keep getting ‘elected’ is because once again, people like you can’t be bothered to put your names down, the answer has always been in your hands, assuming you are members. What have you missed most during lockdown? nation, we are all reassessing the importance of our closest relationships and the activities we love doing together, so it's fantastic to see shopping, dining out and socialising ranking so highly in our survey.”
Wall's Pastry commissioned the online YouGov survey, which reached more than 1,800 members of the public, to discover what people have missed from their everyday lives during lockdown.
Results also showed that nationwide, 47% of Gen Y and millennials (25 to 34-year-olds) and 45% of baby boomers (over 55s) are missing hair and beauty treatments the most, with more than half of the votes from women (51%) and more than a quarter from men (33%)*. Brits can expect to revisit their favourite salons and beauty parlours from 4 July at the earliest.
While a high number of people surveyed said they are missing shopping and leisure activities, the expected majority (87%) missed seeing friends and family, while 65% listed visiting a restaurant or pub in their top three – with talks of hospitality venues reopening on 22 June. Mike Holton, brand manager at Wall’s Pastry, said: “The current crisis has meant that as a

chance to win a number of tailored prizes inspired by the activities the nation has been without. Mike added: “We will tailor our promotion prizes to support the nation in doing what they have missed the most once the lockdown ends, in the hope of encouraging them to revisit their favourite food outlets and leisure attractions with their friends and loved ones.” Look for the promotion on Wall’s Pastry products throughout autumn 2020. MP goes out shopping
MP Miriam Cates was out shopping at Fox Valley in Stocksbridge. She posted this message on her facebook page “I popped over to Fox Valley in Stocksbridge this morning and it’s great so see that so many of the stores have reopened. Staff have gone to great lengths to make shops ‘Covid Secure’ and it was good to chat to some of them and hear how more and more customers are returning. This has been a tough time for retailers but support from the Government through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and Small Business Grants has saved many jobs in this sector. It will take some time for business to recover so please continue to support our local shops across the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency.”
Places are still available on all of the College’s HE courses starting September 2020 and it’s not too late to apply. For more information visit the website at: www.barnsley.ac.uk/he

Golfers Back in the Swing The weather was glorious and Stocksbridge golf course was pristine as golfers returned again to the fairways on 13th May after a 7 week lay off due to the closure of the course due to the coronavirus outbreak. Whilst initially only permitting social golf and 2 ball matches, restrictions have now been relaxed to allow 4 ball matches and competitive golf. The first competition was held on Saturday 30th May and early indications were that the lay off had done little to affect the quality of the golf with three players scoring 40 points. On a countback of the back nine the winner was Jonathon Bradley (17), second place was Chay Murphy (13) and third place was Alf Pearson (24). On the following
week, June 6th the weather was not so kind but that did not deter golfers who had been cooped up for seven weeks turning out to enjoy the game and the competition. This week the winner was Andrew Finney (05) with a very impressive gross score of just 2 shots over par giving him 39 points. Chay Murphy (12) having lost a shot off his handicap from the previous week still managed second place with 37 points and Curt Newton (29) took third place also with 37 points but beaten on the back nine. The third week of competition on June 13th also saw a wet start to the event with later players enjoying the best of the weather. This time it was Liam O’Sullivan (05) captain of the league team who played the course to par for an excellent 41 points, with James Stothard (13) in second place with 40 points and Andrew Finney (05) again playing well with 39 points to take 3rd place. These results put both Liam O’Sullivan and Andrew Finney on an exact handicap of 4.5 and just one good round away from a handicap reduction to 4. After some very heavy rain throughout the week the weather relented at the weekend and the course which had benefitted from the rain was in immaculate condition. It

was perfect weather for golf on the 20th June. Curt Newton (27) continued his good form despite having lost two shots off his handicap to win the competition with 40 points with Richard Grimmer (18) one point behind on 39 points and David Hardy (16) in third place with 37 points. The ladies section kicked off their competitions on 31st May with the vice captain Heather Evans (33) winning convincingly with 38 points ahead of Ann Whitfield (29) on 32 points and Margaret Pearson (25) continuing her good form from last year in third place with 31 points. Lady Captain Helen Moffett (29) hosted a Captains competition on June 14th and then went on to win the competition with 36 points with Ann Whitfield (29) again taking runner up position with 34 points and Ann O’Donnel (15) in third with 30 points During the first four weeks following relaxation of the lockdown the club has welcomed many visitors who have enjoyed the magnificent views from the top of the course which many of them remarked was in excellent condition. The club welcomes visitors who can book a round by phoning the pro shop on 01142882779.
Stocksbridge Park Steels have been given a brandnew mower in support of the appeal for the Essential Equipment fundraising page. Roger Gissing Vice Chairman and Commercial manager cheekily posted and tagged all the manufacturers he could find on a Facebook page, and to his amazement Stiga one of the largest suppliers of garden machinery offered to supply a brand new rotary Mower,. Stiga are now the sponsors for Mick Grimmer Stocksbridge groundsman, voted by the FA as groundsman of the Year 2020.Â
