CHAPELTOWN VAN FIRE ‘STARTED DELIBERATELY’ SOUTH Yorkshire Fire and Rescue say that a fire in Chapeltown was started deliberately and are appealing for anyone with information to get in touch with Crimestoppers. The van fire in the early hours of Monday June 29 spread to a nearby car and nearly set the neighbouring house on fire. Had it not been for the early intervention of firefighters, this could have been a devastating house fire. A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Fire and Resuce said: “Great work from our crews but, really, this shouldn’t have happened in the first place.” Crimestoppers can be contacted by telephone on 0800 555 111 and is a charity which allows members of the public to pass information about criminals anonymously to police.

In total, the project will cost around £1 million, with Age UK Sheffield contributing £100,000 and over £200,000 in partner funding already secured. Additional local fundraising will also be needed. Chapeltown Market back on track SATURDAY July 4 may have been Independence Day in the USA, but in Chapeltown the independently owned community market, TRAXX, got off to a flying start. For almost 10 years, Chapeltown market has been in decline. The Friday market is still hanging on thanks to a couple of traders who have supported the market for a number of years. As Covid-19 controls changed on Saturday, hair salons and barbers opened and so did the new market. And with over 2,000 people attending the first weekly Saturday market, it was full steam ahead. The Market Project wants to bring people together to shop, eat and socialize in the heart of the community. To launch a new market is challenging, but at this difficult time you could think it’s impossible. At the new market social distancing measures

Rotary teams up with local foodbanks to fight hunger

A NEW initiative by Rotary is helping to support Sheffield foodbanks as they face unprecedented demand for their services. Sheffield foodbanks, in common with those across the country, are facing a massive increase in demand as a result of the Covid19 crisis. More and more families are facing increasing hardship and are turning to foodbanks as a vital means of support. But a new initiative by Rotary is helping to ensure that the limited funds of many of the region’s foodbanks go further still. Local club Wortley Rotary is part of the region-wide project, Rotary4foodbanks, launched last month across the East Midlands and South Yorkshire.

President of the Wortley Club, Philip Sherriff, told Look Local: “It is a real team effort. “Foodbanks can be nominated by Rotary clubs for direct support and other foodbanks can order supplies through Rotary4foodbanks and see their limited funds work harder. Wortley club has donated funds and nominated the foodbank at St Saviours, High Green and last week they received their first bulk delivery from the project.” While the Rotary4foodbanks scheme is currently operating only in the East Midlands and South Yorkshire, the plan is to roll it out more broadly. “Our members tell us there is a crying need for a similar service to support foodbanks elsewhere in the country,” says the scheme’s co-ordinator, John Cavey.

These changes have given the market a facelift and have been welcomed by market traders and their customers. Everyone agrees this change has improved the look and feel of the market but also helped everyone to observe the social distancing guidelines to ensure the safety of themselves and others. Many small towns have lost their markets but Chapelgreen Community Enterprise wants to breathe new life into the Chapeltown area, constantly thinking of ways to encourage people to

support its traders and keep the town centre vibrant and welcoming. It certainly seemed to work on Saturday with a great variety of stalls, from fresh breads and pastry, to Silicilian food and jewellery. You could even get a birthday cake for your four legged friends at The Greedy Dog Co. The new Saturday market has been planned right up to December with a Christmas Market that is taking bookings already. Friday continues to provide great fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, biscuits and fish. You can visit this coming Saturday 10am till 4pm with the street food continuing up to 8pm. Both schools offer two hours of PE per week and a wide range of after school clubs linked to physical activity are provided. Pupils have the opportunity to compete it intra mural competitions against one another. showcases the impact this has had in developing confidence, standards of lessons, opportunities for pupils and at-

Miss Jones further added: “The Continuous Professional Development (CPD) model is very well thought out and it is tailored to meet the individual member of staffs needs. The CPD model has proved to be a sustainable model which was the purpose of the introduction of the School Sports Premium funding. “We have had members of staff other than PE coordinator now deliver PE related staff meetings and we have even had a member of staff produce a video for iMoves that is a national dance scheme to support other schools.”

Husband serenades wife on her birthday THERE were emotional celebrations at Sheffield care home as 93-year-old Raymond Shaw serenaded his 92-year-old wife, June. Staff at Newfield care home captured the heartwarming moment as Raymond sang for his wife on her birthday. The Stannington couple have always lived in Sheffield and recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary at Newfield where they have been staying temporary due to ill health. Laura Hibbard, care home manager at Newfield, said: “June was feeling a bit low because she would normally spend her birthday with her family and she would enjoy going for a drive so Ray sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to her to cheer her up. “Staff at the home set up a karaoke machine for him and he treated everyone to several of June’s favourite tunes including ‘We’ll Meet Again’ and ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’.” Raymond and June were discharged from Newfield on Monday July 6 and returned to their home in Stannington together.

Your Letters 58 bus service Oughtibridge The 58 Bus Service has recently changed its route and no longer travels along Cragg View Crescent, Oughtibridge. This has been brought to my attention by a number of residents who rely on the service driving along the Crescent to ensure they had access to transport to get them to local shops and services. Many local residents tell me they are now unable to get out due to this change. I have liaised with Stagecoach about this change to service, and they state that the volume of vehicles parked on the crescent makes it impossible to drive even smallest vehicle safely. We all know that Cragg View Crescent was built at a time when we didn’t have so many vehicles on our roads, that is the situation we now have to try and work around. If you have a vehicle on Cragg View Crescent, in order to try and get the bus service re-instated for those residents who don’t, can I suggest that if at all possible you park on one side of the road and not the other, and use driveways if you have them. This will make the road safer for all road users. I appreciate this may be difficult.

At present we are unable to have live performances due to the current restrictions, but the lockdown rules are changing almost every week, so we are eagerly looking forward to the time when we will be up and running again, with all the necessary safeguards in place of course.

Hollin Busk planning application The planning application submitted by DLP for outline planning permission to build up to 85 houses on the protected open space at Hollin Busk will be considered at the Planning Committee on Tuesday July 14. Unbelievably, the planning officer has recommended that the Planning Committee approves this application.

Hello! I hope you have had a good week? In this week’s column, I want to talk about how mobile phones can affect our mental wellbeing. The good, the bad and the snuggly. Firstly, we will start with the good. The fact that we can now see and speak to our loved ones, friends, colleagues or anyone else, anyAlertrefresh_POSTER_AW_A3_2_v1_a.indd 1 where in the world and at the touch of a button is amazing. This helps to reduce isolation and improve communication which is extremely valuable for maintaining our mental wellbeing. Our phones can also have applications on them that can help us to maintain and improve our wellbeing. These include apps for healthy eating, exercising, breathing techniques, yoga, managing anxiety, art therapy, nature sounds and much more. We can also access YouTube on our phones, which can provide us with videos and tutorials on all of the aforementioned, plus motivational speeches and positive affirmations amongst other things. Our phones can also host social media apps where we can access groups to talk about how we are feeling and find out information and tips. So, this is all good and positive right? But what about the bad? Well, some people are guilty of spending too long on their phones. Unhealthy habits can develop around phone usage and this can be detrimental for our mental wellbeing and life.

Another one to keep an eye on is social media. As great as it is, it can be very easy to start comparing our lives to those of other peoples. We might start to wish we had what others have and become upset as a result that we don’t. This can create unhealthy viewpoints and lead to us feeling down and like we are underachieving. It is also worth noting that if you struggle with sleep then you should probably avoid using your phone in bed or before you go to bed. Our phones emit something called blue screen which is scientifically proven to stimulate your brain, suppressing our sleep hormones and thus keeping us awake for longer periods of time. So, to counter that, use it to get snuggly instead and listen to some nature sounds apps or calming music as you settle down for a good night’s sleep. Remember it’s great to stay connected but it doesn’t have to be 24/7.

STEEL VALLEY RIDE CANCELLED

THE Betfred World Snooker Championship starts on July 31 and fans with tickets are being given the option to register interest in attending the Crucible if government regulations allow an audience. Snooker’s biggest tournament will run from July 31 to August 16 at the famous Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. WST remains in discussion with the UK government around the possibility of safely welcoming spectators. Otherwise, the event will be played behind closed doors. All fans with tickets have been contacted today giving them the chance to state whether they want to be considered for a seat in the reduced capacity audience. This is an unparalleled opportunity to be among the few fans present in the arena for one of the great events in sport. Under these circumstances, any fans attending will be strictly required to follow regulations on social distancing and sanitisation, which will be detailed by WST prior to arrival. Ticket holders also have the option of a full refund, or a transfer of their order to the 2021 Betfred World Championship at the Crucible.

ALTHOUGH it will come as no surprise, The Steel Valley Project are sorry to say that they’ve had to cancel this year’s Steel Valley Ride due to Covid-19. The understandable decision was taken by British Cycling to cancel all sanctioned events until August, which included the Steel Valley Ride charity MTB event.

A spokesperson for the Steel Valley Project said: “Many apologies to everyone who was looking forward to the event. We’ve already emailed everyone who had entered with full details of the cancellation, please contact us if you’ve not received anything. We hope to run the Steel Valley Ride again in 2021 and, in the meantime, wish you a great summer riding your bike.”

Challenging conditions for Stocksbridge golfers

REGULAR readers of this column will by now be familiar with the name Andrew Finney. Soon after the golf course reopened, Andrew was asked how things were going and he replied in typically modest fashion: “It’s going quite well at the moment, I’m hitting the ball OK.” That would appear to have been a huge understatement as on the Thursday midweek medal Andrew (04) once again topped the Division One with a net 63, three shots under par, beating Steve Coutts

(10) who also shot a net 63 but losing out on the back nine. In third place was Philip Jepson (12) with a net 64. In Division Two, Richard Grimmer (17) won with a net 67 after dropping a shot off his handicap courtesy of his second place a fortnight previously. Brian Dobb (18) took second place also with a net 67 (poorer back nine) with Wayne Lazenby (23) taking third place with a net 73. The weekend saw the first of the two-day competitions with the

gents playing for the Brian Langley Trophy, the juniors competing for the Albert Goodison Trophy and while Saturday was a pleasant if rather dull day, Sunday provided very challenging conditions with very strong winds blowing across the exposed course.

Andrew’s brother Peter (05) finished in third place with a net 63 and 67. The junior competition was won by Charlie Binns (24) with net scores over the two days of 68 and 75. The challenging conditions on Sunday obviously proved difficult for Charlie.

Despite the wind Matt Slatter (23) played two excellent rounds of net 61 and 60 to win the competition by a clear margin of nine points from the in form Andrew Finney (04) who carded a net 66 and 64.

The ladies competed for the Cumberland Salver, a stableford competition, on Sunday July 5 and had the strong winds to contend with. Sue Hill (21) came out on top with 31 points ahead of Charlotte Colley (06), one of the club’s promis-

ing young ladies on 30 points with Hilja O’ Sullivan in third place on 28 points. Saturday July 4 also saw the opening of the clubhouse following the lifting of restrictions so players could enjoy a welcome drink after their round. Hopefully next week will see a return to the sunny conditions experienced during the lockdown when the gents will be competing for the Stableford Shield and the ladies will be competing for the Strathdene Trophy.

Pedersen leads in European Championship SHEFFIELD signing Nicki Pedersen emerged from the opening round of the European Championship in Torun as joint series leader with British ace Robert Lambert. Although he finished third in the final, he scored 14 points which was two more than the winner of the final, fellow Dane Leon Madsen. The series takes place over five rounds and moved to Bydgoszcz, less than an hour away from Torun, on Wednesday and will again be live on Eurosport. Pedersen, who signed for Sheffield in the winter and is still keen to travel here should the

season start next month, said: “I did my best to score as many points as possible and I’m happy. “I was happy with my set-up, I didn’t really need to change things much throughout the meeting and I felt fairly comfortable. “To get third in the final wasn’t too bad, I knew Leon wanted it badly in the final and fair play to him, but it’s a good start for me and we’ll see how we get on going into the next round.” The winner of the series will automatically qualify for next year’s Grand Prix series.

STOCKSBRIDGE RUGBY LEGEND RETIRES STOCKSBRIDGE rugby legend and stalwart Mick ‘Selwyn Froggat’ Taylor is finally retiring after around 40 years of loyal service as player, captain, groundsman and latterly bar steward.

His development as a tough, no-nonsense prop forward was the cornerstone of many a Stocksbridge victory and the much-vaunted Stocksbridge pack became feared and respected, far and wide.

Having proudly becoming a grandparent recently, with daughter Donna providing twins Freddie and Charlie on February 21, he has plenty to keep him busy.

Mick played an integral part in converting the Old Methodist Church on Manchester Road into the rugby club’s HQ in 1985, whilst also proving a popular and successful first team skipper during the 1987-89 season, and again from 1992-94.

His love affair with the Piggies began at age 19, when life long buddy Jim Lambert persuaded the bulky teenager that rugby might be a good thing for him and Jim was right, Mick took to the sport like a duck to water and he was hooked.

Even after retiring from playing, his love for the club never diminished and he took on the role of head curator, which he did until very recently.

His life and soul attitude has seen many successful rugby tours from Whitby to international venues like Llanwern in Wales and Benidorm in Spain. The global pandemic has put a hold, albeit temporary, on the plans for a celebration of his time at the club but chairman Andy Bell has declared the ‘party of parties’ when the clubhouse is able to reopen. From all his team mates, committee colleagues and rugby club members who have had the joy to socialise with him, ‘thanks for the ride Selwyn’, enjoy your deserved and happy retirement.

STEELS SIGN NEW SPONSORSHIP DEAL AFTER months of uncertainty and concern, Stocksbridge Park Steels have agreed a sponsorship package. When the playing season abruptly came to an end and long term sponsorship agreements finished, the club’s fortunes looked bleak. But due to the amount of publicity the club have generated via social media and the press, several people had shown an interest in supporting the club, and they are pleased to announce they have reached an agreement with a very progressive South Yorkshire business. Talks have been taking place over several weeks and a deal has now been confirmed. Eco-Power Environmental Ltd will be the Steels’ main sponsor for the next two seasons. Discussions were completed when Louis Calders, commercial director of the business and club chairman Gra-

ham Furness signed the papers this week. Feeling relieved to have finally managed to secure funding for the club, Roger Gissing, the club’s commercial manager stated: “We now have a solid platform to build on and ensure we have a club and teams representing Stocksbridge to be proud of, and ambitions to have the club playing football at the highest level possible, and we look forward to working in partnership with EcoPower Environmental Ltd.” Louis Calders said: “I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of Eco-Power Environmental to say how proud we are to become the main sponsor of Stockbridge Park Steels FC. “Eco-Power is an environmental and alternative fuels business with sites across the country, but the head office and foundations of the business are here in South Yorkshire.

“As a collective we have a passion for both Football and community and see this partnership as prosperous for both Eco-Power and SPS FC. “Our ambition for the club is quite simple, we want to get the club on a positive footing both on and off the pitch. “We can see the great work that Graham the chairman, and Roger the commercial manager are doing, it’s clear they’ve got a real passion for the club and are great custodians, but operating in very difficult conditions, particularly of late. “We want to support them, and Chris the manager to keep the club sustainable and hopefully realise the club’s and supporter’s aspirations.
