CAMPAIGNERS CLAIM VICTORY
ON July 14, Sheffield City Council’s planning committee backed campaigners against a new 93house development on farm fields between Deepcar and Bolsterstone – known as Hollin Busk. They voted 12 to one against the plans. The campaign has been supported by hundreds of local residents with both the Upper Don Action Group (UDAG) and Friends of Hollin Busk objecting to the plans along with councillors. UDAG called a public meeting on the proposal in February 2017, shortly after the new housing scheme was announced.
Since then there have been numerous on and off planning meetings, with local residents being uncertain of what was going to happen. UDAG chairman, John Hesketh, who is a former chairman of the Council’s planning committee, said: “This is a tremendous victory for the hundreds of local people who have opposed building what would effectively be a new village in open countryside.
“UDAG has fought against such a large development because it would be a major step towards accepting widespread building inside Sheffield’s ‘golden frame’. Our city is almost unique in Britain in being framed by glorious unspoilt countryside - hills, fields, moors, peaks, rivers and valleys.
“The Hollin Busk 93-dwelling ‘village’ would be built on farm fields, not an old factory site. The site is over the lane from Sheffield’s Green Belt and virtually adjacent to the Peak District National Park. If we build at this location, it is UDAG’s view that nowhere - literally nowhere - in Sheffield’s Golden Frame is safe.” Councillor Julie Grocutt, Labour councillor for Stocksbridge and Upper Don, said: “I am delighted that the council’s Planning Committee has rejected the Hollin Busk application. “The proposal was causing a great deal of anxiety to many residents – with over 500 individuals raising formal objections. As a local resi-
dent and elected representative of the area, I have spent a great deal of time listening to local people’s opposition to this planning application.
“At the committee meeting I made the case that the developer has no vested interest in what is built at Hollin Busk and that the proposed development would damage the ecology of the area, spoil the surrounding green spaces enjoyed by local residents and cause significant problems with traffic and parking. “I also told the committee about the problems with drainage at the site and that, I believe, it fails to provide proper community cohesion. Quite frankly, this is not a space on which to build homes.
The red star marks the proposed location of the 93 homes
the approach of ensuring developments meet local needs and of using brownfield sites as a priority. The message from today is clear – green sites should be protected.”
“I am delighted that the Planning Committee agreed with the case against the development, and I’m sure many residents will be welcoming this news today
In a letter which can be found on this week’s letter page, Friends of Hollin Busk said: “Friends of Hollin Busk was established in 2017 to campaign against this proposed development.
“Of course we need more homes throughout Sheffield but it has to be done in the right way, and I am proud of Labour councillors for
“It has taken almost three years for this outline planning application to be considered by the planning committee and during this time we
have tried to keep this issue alive in the local community. The local community came out in force to object to this application – 528 individuals and organisations posted some very comprehensive reasons why this development should not go ahead. “This is a huge victory for our local community to retain the open countryside views from Hollin Busk. However, this will not be the end of it. Hallam Land Management may appeal the decision.”

CCTV CAPTURES PETROL STATION ROBBERY DETECTIVES in Sheffield have released CCTV footage of a man they want to speak to in connection with an attempted robbery at a petrol station in Hillsborough. It is reported that at 2.40am on Friday June 26, an unknown offender approached the counter of the BP petrol station on Leppings Lane, and threatened a member of staff.
Detective Constable John Briers, investigating, said: “The offender reportedly demanded that staff handed over cash from the till, and is alleged to have made threats to set the premises on fire before leaving the forecourt empty handed. “This was extremely distressing for the member of staff who was on duty that morning. “An investigation is underway and as part of our enquiries we
have released CCTV footage of a man we believe may have information about what happened.” Do you recognise the man in the footage? Do you have any information that might assist our enquiries? If you can help our officers, please contact 101 quoting crime reference number 14/95823/20.
Spread the word about emerging phone scam SOUTH Yorkshire Police’s Fraud Coordination Team is warning Sheffield residents to be aware of an emerging ‘bogus official’ telephone scam in our area. Action Fraud - the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cyber crime - has made our team aware of reports of victims being called by a fraudster claiming to be a police officer, and told to withdraw large sums of money from their bank accounts, to help with a criminal investigation. Among those targeted have been two elderly residents in Sheffield, aged 79 and 80.
Detective Sergeant Sam Erabadda, from South Yorkshire Police’s Fraud Coordination Team, said: “Last week there were a couple of cases in our area where the victims received a call from somebody claiming to be PC Clarke from The Metropolitan Police. ‘PC Clarke’ claims the victim has had money taken from their bank account. He says they must withdraw the rest of the money from their account in cash and later hand it over to the ‘police’ for testing so they can investigate the theft. “Often with these scams, the victim will be told that the staff at the
bank are in on the scam and they have to lie about why they want to withdraw the money so it doesn’t arouse suspicion. One of our Sheffield victims was talked through the questions the bank staff would ask about the large withdrawal, and made to repeat her answers back to the fraudster to make sure she had good ones. “Luckily, the victims in our area realised something wasn’t right and no money was lost. However, these fraudsters can be extremely convincing so it’s important we all spread the word about scams like this to ensure nobody’s loved ones
lose money to these callous fraudsters.” Reports about scams should be made to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040, or visiting their website at www.actionfraud.police. uk. However, if someone has turned up at your home demanding money for a ‘police investigation’, call 999 immediately. Tips to avoid becoming a victim: - A genuine police officer would never ask someone to aid an investigation by handing over their own money
- Never part with your money or any high-value goods following an unsolicited phone call - If you have given someone your bank details, call your bank and cancel your cards immediately - If you want to call your bank, do so from another telephone in case the fraudster is still on the line. If you don’t have another phone, call someone you know first to make sure the line is clear, or wait at least 30 minutes before making the call.

‘SOUTH YORKSHIRE ANTHEM’ TO BE PLAYED BY BBC ORCHESTRA THE song that best symbolises South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire – as picked by listeners – will be covered by an 80-piece BBC orchestra. Nominations can submitted through Facebook or email for the “local anthem” from July 17. The winning track will be picked by BBC Radio Sheffield breakfast presenter Toby Foster before being sent to the 80-piece BBC Philharmonic. They will have just two weeks to write, rehearse and perform the tune, with each musician recording their part from their own home. It means music from artists from the likes of The Human League, Reverend and The Makers or even one of Sheffield’s own football anthems could be reimagined into an impressive piece of music which will become part of the local music scene. Presenter Toby Foster said: “South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire are home to such a thriving music scene, with so many different genres popping up over the decades. Synthpop legends the Human League, ABC and Heaven 17 led the way in the 1980s. “Then there’s the guitar bands like the Arctic Monkeys, The Long Blondes, and Little Man Tate who found national success after playing on the local music scene. Listeners are spoilt for choice. I can’t wait to hear their suggestions! “Let’s find out once and for all: what is our local anthem?”

The finished song will be played two weeks later on the Breakfast Show. Rozina Breen, head of BBC North, said: “The Philharmonic is a northern institution and to hear it connect directly with our diverse communities across the North will be very special.
“The North has produced some of the world’s best bands, musicians and songwriters and our aim is to bring communities in crisis together creatively, through music, with a celebration of our shared and world-renowned musical heritage.” To submit your nomination, email radio. sheffield@bbc.co.uk or Facebook comment @bbcsheffield
Coronovirus Business Grants Scheme extended SHEFFIELD City Council has opened applications for its Coronavirus Business Grants Scheme for a second time, giving more businesses who have not received any other support the opportunity to apply for grants between £1000 and £10,000, depending on the size of the business. The eligibility criteria of this scheme will also now be expanded to include businesses with a rental value of up to £25,000 (previously £15,000). Applications will be open for two weeks and will close at midnight on Thursday July 30. The Coronavirus Business Grants Scheme has been put in place to provide financial aid to businesses that have relatively high fixed property costs and are not eligible for other Government grants.
As with the first round of applications, the scheme will predominately aim to support businesses that would have been eligible for a business rate grant if they had been the named ratepayer on their premises. As well as opening the scheme to businesses with a rental value of up to £25,000, the second round of the scheme will also accept applications from self-employed individuals who have received very little from the Self Employment Scheme (SEIS) as well as meeting all the other criteria. Grants of up to £1,000 will be available. £3m of Government funding will be used to deliver the scheme, following the distribution of £2.5m to businesses in the first round of applications in June. The types of businesses eligible for the scheme are as follows:
• With rental values up to £25,000 per year • Small Businesses who have been severely hit by Covid and have relatively high property costs, including those businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure supply chain • Retail, hospitality and leisure businesses who are not the rate payer and who’s commercial rent is up to £51,000 per year • Local charities that have not been able to apply for the business rate grant up to a rental value of £25,000 per year • Nurseries with a yearly commercial rent value up to £51,000 • Regular market traders who were not able to apply for a business rate grant. • Bed and Breakfasts with a food hygiene certificate
Businesses and organisations applying for the grant must be able to evidence that they are trading from the premises they are making an application for. More information on the full eligibility criteria for the Coronavirus Business Grants Scheme and the online application form can be found at www.sheffield.gov.uk/discretionarygrants. Businesses who were not eligible in round one of applications that are now eligible in round two because of the broadened criteria will need to reapply. The Council is contacting these businesses directly to advise them of this. Businesses can also contact Business Sheffield on 0114 224 5000 or email businesssheffield@sheffield.gov.uk for further guidance and to speak to a Business Advisor.

We all worked together to remove what was a huge concern for the community. “There’s no doubt that Bresnik and this setup were part of someone’s business plan, but Bresnik was fully aware of what he was doing and deserved a custodial sentence today. “I hope this result empowers people to report issues and work with us, we know this is an issue for some of our communities and we’re here to help tackle those problems.” If you suspect someone is growing cannabis in a property in your community, please call 101 or speak to Crimestoppers.
STOCKSBRIDGE SPEED CAMERA PULLS IN ALMOST £2 MILLION A SPEED camera on Stocksbridge Bypass has been revealed to be the fifth most lucrative in the UK, pulling in almost £2 million of fines. A Freedom of Information request made by The Mail shows that the camera has led to 19,607 tickets being issued to drivers resulting in £1.96m in fines. It is the only speed camera in South Yorkshire to feature in the top ten with the country’s biggest earning camera being Lea Bridge Road west in London which has issued an eye-
watering 38,234 fines raking in £3.8 million in fines. Figures show the number of speeding fines handed out has grown by more than 40 per cent between 2011 and 2018. Concerns have been raised that the primary objective of the cameras and their placement is to generate revenue. The report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services called for greater transparency over the use of cameras and their revenues.
It said: “Apparent unwillingness to support education over enforcement had led to suspicion among officers, including some at chief officer level, that the focus of activity was intended to increase revenue for the safety partnership. “They gave examples of some camera sites that they believed didn’t have a history of collisions or other identified vulnerabilities. Elsewhere, we were told that the reason enforcement took place at certain locations was that they were ‘good hunting grounds’, rather than because they had a history of collisions.”

Additional £16 million to protect Sheffield from flooding SHEFFIELD is set to receive an additional £16 million for the city’s flood defence programme, following the Government’s new multibillion pound investment plan, announced on Tuesday July 14. Sheffield City Council has welcomed the announcement, which will support the continued delivery of its important plans to protect the city from the effects of flooding. The extra funding is awarded to the Upper Don Valley Phase 2 scheme that will protect the Neepsend and Kelham districts of the city, together with a significant contribution to natural flood management (NFM) measures in the uplands above the city. The scheme’s £9million Phase 1, which covers the Lower Loxley area, is due to start next month. The funding recognises the work that the Council and the EA have been doing in advancing Sheffield’s flood defence schemes to a position where they are ready for delivery.
To protect Sheffield from extreme flood events such as those witnessed last winter, the Council and Environment Agency approach is a combination of traditional defences and natural ‘slowing the flow’ measures in the uplands. This approach delivered significant benefits during last winter’s storms in preventing a repeat of the devastating 2007 floods from happening again in Sheffield’s lower Don valley. Natural flood management helps to alleviate flooding through reducing surface flow. Various natural alleviation methods are being used in Sheffield including tree planting, peat and soil restoration and the formation of temporary ponds. Councillor Mark Jones, Cabinet Member for Environment, Streetscene and climate change at Sheffield City Council, said: “This funding is welcome news for Sheffield. We have proven the importance of a strong flood defence programme, delivering the robust schemes that protected thousands of homes and hundreds of businesses, during the 2019 floods.
“This funding highlights the strength, and the confidence nationally in our plans, as well as the successful working partnerships we have forged with the Environment Agency and other flood management organisations. “Natural Flood Management is at the heart of our flood mitigations, and will add to our Net Zero 2030 Carbon targets. “Although we have seen positive results, the effects of climate change will only increase the threat of flooding and the danger to lives, homes and businesses. It is crucial that we continue to urgently progress the next phases of our planned programme, and this additional funding will support us in doing so.” Helen Batt, South Yorkshire Flood Risk Manager at the Environment Agency said: “This funding boost is great news for Sheffield and our plans to progress flood defences to better protect homes and businesses.

I am getting increasingly concerned that so many children are being denied education. At the beginning of this health crisis, your government asked retirees to return to work in the NHS. Many have. Also some who had moved on into high level politics, both here and in Eire. Leo Varadkar returned. My own nephew has returned to doctoring after retraining to be a vicar. The next ask is to return to teaching.
I have taught online via Sheffield College and done loads of A level marking. My ‘do be with kids’ check will be well out of date but if your Government can set something up where people like me, and hopefully you too, are needed back in a classroom... just ask. To enable social distancing, especially with teenagers, you need more teachers and more classrooms. More classrooms can be created in alternative spaces but there is no magic wand for more teachers. It is me and you. We have different politics but hopefully can share the one thing we can do. Teach our kids. Let us both offer one day a week as Rosena Allin-Khan did to A&E. If that is be part of any Government funded catch up plan, to tutor disadvantaged children in any format, face-to-face, online - I am up for it.
Dear Look Local,
Funding is needed for resources, IT, paper, people and spaces. Fully funded short term contracts for staffing this initiative are vital. No early termination of such contracts if the situation changes, as has happened to the student nurses.
Proud local agrees with me that the Government furlough scheme worked well. I agree with him that this is a good country to live in. We are one of the world’s richest countries.
Personally, I would be prepared to work voluntarily. I have a decent pension and would just need funding for necessary resources. Guess you could too.

Wellbeing Corner - week four By Ged Jenkins-Omar, Best Selling Author of ‘Help with Anxiety’ available on Amazon. Hello! I hope you have had a good week? This week’s column focuses on the power of water in helping to improve our wellbeing and eradicating stress. I think we all know that we should be keeping hydrated throughout the day and with good reason. Studies have shown that when our body is dehydrated, it does not function as well as it should. Blood pressure may drop, which can lead to dizziness and a faster heartbeat as the heart tries to increase low blood pressure. This can lead to feelings of anxiety and panic. So, make sure to keep a water bottle with you throughout the day if you are prone to these feelings. If like me you prefer fruity flavours to water then just add sugar-free cordial to your H2O so it doesn’t become bland and monotonous. Along with drinking water, it also has wellbeing qualities when used to relax and revitalise. Last week I spoke about
someone called Wim Hof and his breathing techniques. Well, another one of his teachings is to use the power of cold water to boost your immune system and decrease your levels of cortisol, which is your body’s natural stress hormone. There are a lot of studies that suggest having cold baths and showers can also help to improve energy, decrease anxiety and improve your metabolism. So, to kickstart your day make sure to take a cold shower. Something that is definitely easier in the summer months, but it does get easier and more revitalising the more you do it – honest. Splashing cold water on your wrists, neck or face can also be used to your advantage if you feel your anxiety or stress building up. This is because the cold water helps to lower your heart rate and body temperature, which can increase as your emotions becomes overwhelming. By keeping yourself cool, you can help to stabilise your anxiety levels. Then there
is warm water. Have you ever got into your shower or bath and just said “Ahhhhhhh!”. That’s because a warm bath or shower can help your muscles and body to relax and help to relieve feelings of stress. You could also try adding Epsom salts to your bath as the magnesium in them has been shown to increase the levels of your happy hormone serotonin. Then to enhance the tranquillity in your bathroom even further you could try lighting lavender candles and listening to some calming music. So, remember, kickstart your morning with a cold shower, finish your evening with a hot bath and keep hydrated throughout the day. Please note: This article is for educational purposes only and should not replace proper medical advice. If you are experiencing anxiety or any other mental health illness then please speak to your doctor.

World Snooker Championship to be first indoor event to allow return of spectators
Issue 1123
Call 0114 283 1100
The tournament runs from July 31 to August 16 and spectators will be safely welcomed for every session. This follows the announcement from the UK Government that a small number of sporting events have been carefully selected, providing the opportunity to stress-test the Government’s ‘stage five’ guidance, on the return of fans to elite sports events. Extensive health and safety guidelines for the pilot sporting events have been provided by the Government and these will be followed carefully by WST. Spectators will be expected to follow a code of conduct, with further details to be announced shortly. Earlier this month, WST asked all fans with tickets for the original dates of the Betfred World Championship to register their interest in keeping a place among a reduced crowd. Every fan who decided to keep their tickets will now be awarded a place among the crowd.
Where there are seats available for certain sessions, these will go on general sale within the coming days. WST Chairman Barry Hearn said: “Following extensive discussions with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and Nigel Huddleston MP in recent weeks, we are delighted that the Betfred World Championship has been picked among the very small number of sports events for this pilot project. We will be the only indoor sporting event with a crowd. “This highlights the Government’s confidence in snooker and our ability to safely welcome back fans at one of the biggest sporting events on the planet. “This is marvellous news for the small number of spectators lucky enough to have kept their tickets for what will be a unique occasion at the Crucible. Every single one who chose the option to keep their seat for this year will be given a place. And the limited number of tickets on general sale will be snapped up quickly by fans who now have a once in a lifetime opportunity to see this worldfamous event live. “This really will be a golden ticket. We hope this event
will never again be staged under these circumstances. But on this occasion, it will make the experience even more unique and special. And fans can rest assured that every health and safety guideline provided by the Government will be followed. “From the beginning of this crisis we have remained positive, worked towards opportunities and maintained a constant dialogue with Government. We have been the pacesetters for the return of live sport, staging two successful tournaments already and now we will be the first to host fans at an indoor event. Everyone involved in getting to this point has worked extremely hard and my gratitude goes to them. “Several players have commented that the tournament would not be the same without fans, and so now they will be thrilled by the fact that we are among the first sports to welcome spectators back. The players’ duty is now to behave in a responsible manner, use common sense and follow all relevant guidelines. The eyes of the planet will be on them to help deliver a ground-breaking event.”

Prizes galore LAST week saw seven competitions taking place at Stocksbridge Golf Club and with some welcome sunshine and a course in beautiful condition, members had plenty of opportunity to put their name to a trophy and reduce their handicap and several players did just that. The first competition on Thursday July 16 was the midweek stableford and John Slodyczak (14) came out on top with 41 points. Jordan Flower was just one point behind on 40 points and Wayne Lazenby, one of the greenkeeping staff responsible for the excellent course condition was in third place with 39 points. Saturday saw two trophies for the gents to compete for. The Rabbits Cup for players with a 16 or above handicap and the Les Edwards Trophy for players with a handicap of 15 or less. Both competitions were a medal format where every shot counts.
SNOOKER’S Betfred World Championship will pilot the safe return of spectators to sporting events, with a reduced crowd to be allowed at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield throughout the event.

Mick Siddall (16) may well be playing in the Les Edwards Trophy next year after winning the Rabbits Cup with a net 62, three shots under the standard scratch score of 65. With the same net score of 62, Richard Hastings (19) lost out on the back nine but will see
his handicap reduce to 18 as a result. In third place was Karl Harris (20) who continued his good form from the previous week with a net 63. The Les Edwards Trophy was won by Ash Howe (09) with a net 62 followed by Trevor Moseley with a net 63 beating Andrew Finney (04) on the back nine. Andrews’s gross score of 67 was the lowest gross score of the day and let’s hope his consistent good form continues as he is now very close to a handicap reduction to (03). Sunday was a glorious summer day and resulted in some good scores for the Pro’s Prize, a stableford competition. Neil Elliott (13) led the field with 42 points ahead of Richard Hastings (18) who took second place for the second successive day with 41 points and Alf Pearson (24) in third place with 40 points. All three players will see a one shot reduction in their handicap as a result of their success. The ladies had three competitions the first of which was a back nine-hole stableford played on Friday July 17. The winner of this competition was last week’s trophy winner Liana O’Sullivan with 18 points which is playing exactly to handicap.
Ann Whitfield (13) was second with 15 points beating Bev Sykes (15), who also scored 15 points, with a better back six. Sunday’s competitions were for the Ladies Handicap Cup (handicaps up to 28.4) and the Ladies Rabbits Cup (handicaps over 28.5). These were both medal competitions. The winner of the Ladies Handicap Cup with a net 68 was Hilja O’Sullivan (20), showing that anything her daughter can do she can do. Bev Sykes was second with a net 72 beating Liana O’Sullivan (06) also with a net 72 on the back nine. Whilst having to settle for third place behind her mother, Liana did post the lowest gross score of the competition with a gross 78. The Rabbits Cup was won by Alison Sedgwick with a net 72 ahead of Terri Moffett (36) with a net 81 and Heather Evans (31) in third with a net 83. Visitors are very welcome to come and play and experience this relatively short but very tricky course with its superb views, carpet quality fairways, and beautiful fast greens by booking a tee time on 01142882779 the day before they want to play.
Pigs back in training
AFTER the disruptions of the coronavirus epidemic, Stocksbridge Rugby will begin their pre-season training this Wednesday at Coal Pit Lane. All players are asked to attend and new players will be made welcome. With rugby supremo Rhys Keenan stepping down from his coaching duties and back into the playing ranks, Yorkshire veteran John Dudley has agreed to coach the club this season. He will be assisted by Andy Tyers, in his role as director of rugby. There is also a new skipper at the helm with experienced winger Joe Jones having the honour with Ricky
James as his vice. At this stage, the Development XV have yet to name their captain. With the first round of this season’s competition not scheduled to begin until October, Dudley and Tyers have time to mould a squad and a game plan. The Stocksbridge club will host local rivals Sheffield Oaks in the opening clash on October 10, with a trip to fellow promotion contenders Mosborough the weekend after. Jones is excited by the prospect of leading the club this term. He said: “We have a strong playing roster and if we all buy in, we can look forward to a successful season. I can’t wait to get started after all the disruption.”

Stocksbridge record opening day wins as the curtain is finally lifted on the 2020 season Sheffield Collegiate 4th XI 174-6 (40 overs) Les Harris 2-29, Jake Vickers 2-43 Stocksbridge 1st XI 176-3 (34 overs) Jack Newton 101*, Harry Hurst 22
new format of our wonderful game.
AS the season preparations were in full flow back in March, no one would have expected having to wait till the middle of July to kick off this year’s cricket season. A global pandemic and a government u-turn on the return of the sport later, the first XI made the trip to Abbeydale to take on Sheffield Collegiate fourth XI. The first string, once again led by Andrew Hibbert this season, lost the toss and to his surprise, Stocksbridge were asked to field first. With cricket now a slightly different game, with social distancing, a slightly reduced game and regular sanitisation breaks, both sides lock horns looking to get used to the Match winner Jack Firth (left) and Paul Hargreaves
Stocksbridge made an early break through with Andy Hibbert removing the young opener for single figures. The green army were hoping for a handful of early wickets to put themselves in a strong position, unfortunately this wasn’t the case. The Collegiate pair of opener Ash and number three Stewart started to turn the game in favour of the hosts. With the new look cricket well underway, one thing that hasn’t changed was when the rain came down heavily causing a 45 minute delay. Following the break Collegiate carried on where they left off, with both batters passing 50, a big score looked on the cards. Stocksbridge fought back well, the cunning Les Harris importantly removed Stewart for 69 and Jake Vickers removed Ash for 67. Stocksbridge knew this was now a big chance to restrict the hosts. Harris and Vickers both
claimed a second victim each with Liam Grayson also taking the sixth wicket. Collegiate finished their alloted overs posting a very respectable 174-6 which meant Stocksbridge had to bat well to achieve an opening day victory. The Stocksbridge reply got off to an excellent start with reliable Jack Newton and opening partner for the day Chris Pickford. Both batsmen were watchful and looked to chip away at the total in good time. Pickford just started to look in good touch before knicking behind for 19 and Stocksbridge were now 55-1 with the game poised nicely. Newton was joined by Harry Hurst and the pair set upon the run chase well. Newton was now starting to score more freely and had excellent support from Hurst. The pair shared a stand of 87 for the second wicket before Hurst fell for 22 however had put his side in a very strong position at 142-2. Jack Lyons came and went for an entertaining 10 which brought Grayson to the crease.
Grayson was now happy to play second fiddle to Newton as the pair edged the Green Army to the finishing line. With just three runs required to win, Newton stood unbeaten on 97, in typical Newton fashion, he smashed the ball to the boundary for four to bring up his century and also take his side to and opening day victory, Newton finishing on 101*. An excellent run chase from the Green Army saw them cruise to victory by seven wickets with six overs to spare. Sheffield Transport 2nd XI 170 all out (39 overs) Rowan Brearley 3-50, Chris Thwaites 2-23, Paul Hargreaves 2-28 Stocksbridge 2nd XI 171-7 (39.5 overs) Matt Hague 41, Jack Firth 35*, Jack Reeves 32 Next weekend sees the 1st XI on the road again as they travel to De La Salle and the second XI host Coal Aston at Bracken Moor.
