TOBIAS COMPLETES CHALLENGE INSPIRATIONAL Tobias Weller completed his marathon challenge on Yorkshire Day with Olympic hero Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill by his side. The nine-year old Paces pupil from Sheffield with Cerebral Palsy has raised over £132,000 for charity. Four months on from starting his Marathon Challenges, Tobias, who has captured hearts across the country with his fundraising, completed his second 26 miles. ‘Captain’ Tobias Weller, who has Cerebral Palsy and Autism, cannot walk or stand unaided – let alone run. Yet since March 23, almost every day, he has been going up and down his street to raise money for his special school, Paces, and Sheffield Children’s Hospital. On May 31 he completed his first challenge – walking a marathon. On Saturday August 1, he completed his second, and toughest, walking and running a marathon. Never having run before in his life, it has taken Tobias 40 days, through wind and rain, to finish the latest challenge.

Initially hoping to raise just £500, and inspired by the efforts of Captain Tom Moore, the generosity of people from across the country and beyond has seen Tobias’ fundraising total hit a staggering £132,000. He embarked on the final run supported by his mum, Ruth, who has been alongside him every step of the way over the past 18 weeks.

Tobias said: “I am chuffed to bits with how much money I have raised for my two favourite charities. I cannot thank people enough for supporting me and I cannot believe I have walked and run a marathon! I had never run before I started and look at me now!” His mum, Ruth Garbutt, said: “What a four months it has been. I am so proud of everything Tobias has achieved – at the beginning of March he could only go short distances in his walker, then he walked a marathon. At the beginning of June he had never run before, now he can run and has completed another marathon! “The money raised is beyond anything I could have hoped for and I am so

grateful for all the support from our neighbours, family and friends to the celebrities that we haven’t actually met face to face who have got behind Tobias’s efforts. To each and every person who has donated, thank you for supporting my son.” Paces, based in North Sheffield, supports children and adults with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders. A specialist in Conductive Education, it has been supporting individuals and families across Sheffield, Yorkshire and beyond since 1997. They teach children and adults vital skills such as sitting, standing, walking, communication and selfcare. The money raised by Tobias will go towards their major fundraising campaign to raise £3.5 million towards a new, state-of-the-art facility which will allow Paces to help more children and adults achieve the greatest level of independence they can through a range of supportive physical interventions. Anyone who would like to donate can do so at www.pacessheffield.org.uk/tobias

YORKSHIRE DAY CELEBRATED WITH GROUND ART CANNON Hall Museum, Park and Gardens marked Yorkshire Day with a spectacular piece of land art that combines Yorkshire pride, social distancing and their outstanding collections. The piece which has been created by artists from the Landmark Collective has established mini picnic pods in the parklands for visitors to use at a safe distance of two metres. At the heart of the artwork is the iconic symbol of Yorkshire, the white rose. Surrounding it are shapes inspired by objects from the Museum’s outstanding ceramics collection. The collection has recently been redisplayed as part of the Museum’s ‘Cracking Ceramics!’ project, made possible through support from the Esmee Fairbairn Collections Fund via the Museums Association. The new displays are available to see via a virtual tour while the Museum is closed. Launched as part of the county’s Yorkshire day celebrations on Saturday August 1, it is hoped that the artwork will encourage people to visit the beautiful outside spaces of one of Barnsley’s best loved visitor attractions in a safe and responsible manner. The stunning historic parkland is nearing the end of a four-year restoration project. ‘Parks for People’, which has been made possible through the generosity of the National Heritage Lottery Fund and its players, will see the landscapes returned to their former Georgian splendour.

It includes new accessible pathways, a children’s discovery area, improvements to the walled gardens and will see rowing boats returned to the lake. Alongside this Barnsley Museums will be hosting a whole host of digital activities to celebrate Yorkshire Day which will include a Yorkshire pudding competition, a Barnsley digital jigsaw, blogs, sonnets, debates plus much more. Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture) said: “Cannon Hall park and gardens is proud to be one of Yorkshire’s most beautiful spots and they get hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the county each year. Their parklands have been vital for people during the pandemic as a place to relax, reflect and unwind and we want to make sure they are a safe space for everyone to enjoy. The land art is just one way they will be doing this and Yorkshire Day is the perfect time to launch it as well as celebrating everything that is great about ‘Gods own county’.” James Brunt, artist from Landmark Collective, said: “It is wonderful to be creating artwork once again after a difficult few months and even more so on such a brilliant project. “Cannon Hall is such a special place and a real jewel in the Yorkshire landscape, so it is the ideal location to celebrate our magnificent county. We hope that the artwork will really shine a spotlight on the parklands but also encourage people to visit in a safe and responsible way.”

This was a mammoth task with 60 children leaving but they managed it and nursery manager Rachel Stocks snapped photos of the graduates.

WE ARE TAKING PART IN THE FIX-YOUR-BIKE VOUCHER SCHEME TO SAVE £50 ON BIKE REPAIRS WITH A VALID VOUCHER! CYCLE Penistone C.I.C. is taking part in the Government ‘Fix your Bike Voucher Scheme’ which allows members of the public to receive a voucher worth up to £50 towards the cost of repairing a bicycle. The voucher scheme has been hugely popular and all vouchers in the first batch have now been allocated. However, the Government say they will be working closely with the cycling industry during this pilot stage to monitor the scheme’s impact. Further vouchers will be released when they are confident people will be able to get their bikes fixed at a wide range of retailers without significant waiting times.

The scheme is open to anyone in England who has a cycle in need of a repair. Vouchers can only be used with bike repairers or mechanics that are registered for the scheme in England, such as Cycle Penistone, and up to two vouchers can be claimed per household. Cycle Penistone is a community bike facility and shop, promoting an inclusive approach to cycling. They are blessed with a truly special location, with the lovely Trans-Pennine Trail passing right by their door. This wonderful route for cyclists, walkers and horse riders passes through the Pennines, along rivers, and through some of the most

TREE LOVING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

SHEFFIELD’S new exemplary Street Tree Strategy, being delivered by the new Sheffield Street Tree Partnership, is seeking volunteers who are passionate about trees and wildlife in general. Sheffield is known nationally for its street trees, many of them planted over 100 years ago by the far-sighted community leaders of the time. However, maintaining and increasing the canopy cover of those street trees, taking into account

their increasing age and the emerging disease threats to them, requires the support of the whole community. The network of volunteers will help monitor the health of existing street trees, including supporting the planting and care of new young trees. They will also help to influence the planting of additional young trees, their location and species selection, contributing to an improvement in the environment of your neighbourhood, and Sheffield as whole.

Volunteers will be asked initially to commit to 30 hours per year to deliver core responsibilities, but there is scope for more should individuals choose. Information on what the role involves and how to express an interest can be found on the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife trust web site, https:// www.wildsheffield. com/sheffield-streett re e-p ar t nership/ from Wednesday July 29 2020. The closing date for applications is August 14.

Back in the June 2019 Look Local, ‘Jenny Wren’ had a letter published with reference to ‘The Hollin Bustup’. Try and take little moments in the day to just relax and mindfully breathe. Whether that’s in the car, at home, on the toilet, in work or somewhere else. Just slow down, close your eyes, breathe deeply and enjoy some moments of tranquillity. Another way you can slow down is through meditating.

Yours truly, Once upon a time meditating would have Craig Minto. been associated with Buddhists and hippies

and fairly so. However, nowadays more and more people are practising meditation and mindfulness. Whether it’s celebrities, football stars, the guy in the office or the girl next door. Why? Well, because meditating is good for the soul and great for fighting stress, anxiety and depression. Whether you meditate for a minute,

an hour or more, meditation can help you to break the cycle of constant thoughts that whirl through your mind. It gives us some quiet time and relaxation in our day and can help us to become more in touch with our feelings. To meditate you should find a quiet spot, sit comfortably and supported and focus on your relaxed breathing. You can close your eyes for a more body-like experience or keep them open to feel more grounded. Do whatever feels natural to you. Then just spend some time focussing on your breathing and relax. At first, this may feel strange to you as your mind races around and random thoughts pop into your head. That’s fine. Just allow them to be and keep coming back to your relaxed state. Over time you will get better at this and enjoy its benefits more and more. The beauty of meditating is that you can do it anytime, anyplace, anywhere and if you are a complete newbie to it, then there is lots of information available online. There are also lots of videos on YouTube that will coach you through a variety of meditation and breathing techniques. Watch a few of them until you find one that you enjoy and works for you. Happy meditating. Please note: This article is for educational purposes only and should not replace proper medical advice. If you are experiencing anxiety or any other mental health illness then please speak to your doctor.

There are no group trainings, no crowds, no changing rooms, no wet areas and no need to wait for equipment. If you are not currently focusing on strength training, get in touch to arrange a free trial session and discover how training in the safe fit20 environment can support a strong immune system. WELCOME, JAMES!

We’re pleased to announce James Sidebottom has joined the team as a personal trainer after recently graduating our thorough academy internship programme. James, a Penistone

I’m a busy working mum and time is very limited and precious, so getting fit in twenty minutes just fits within my routine perfectly. I’ve been training with fit20 for the past three years, it’s absolutely fantastic, there’s no way I could give up training now as the benefits are fabulous. I had my reservations at first as I wondered where I was going to get my cardio from, but trust me you definitely get your cardio here as well! I like the way I feel after my training sessions. I can be lethargic when I walk in, but I always walk out feeling great, energised, straighter and fit for the rest of the week.

Nursing home in Stocksbridge delighted to be welcoming visitors back STAFF and residents at Belmont House Nursing Home in Stocksbridge have been enjoying welcoming visitors to their homes this week. “We are extremely pleased to be able to open our doors again, families are as much a part of our home as our residents,” said Kerry Peach, home manager at Abbey Grange Care and Nursing Home.

Each care home has put together comprehensive information for visitors to help them understand the new procedures and feel at ease when they visit.

All visitors will be required to wear a face masks for garden visits and full PPE for indoor visits, every visitor is required to pass through a thermal imaging machine to check their temperature “It’s been very emotional to see resi- on arrival. dents’ faces light up as they see family members after so long. We know how Operations Director, Helen important it is for our residents to see Richmond, added; “All Country loved ones and this is a real boost for everyone.” There were many touching reunions at the homes as residents were able to see their loved ones for the first time in over four months. One of the first visitors through the door was Nigel Hart who came to see his mother Janet who is 83 years old and lives at Belmont House. “[Our] first visit to see Mam yesterday [was a] bit emotional but lovely to see her again, [we] just want to thank the amazing people who [cared for her] through these tough times, not only themselves but their families. You have been brilliant,” said Nigel. Country Court, who had already put comprehensive guidelines for families in place before the government guidelines were announced, are asking families to comply with stringent health and safety measures to keep people safe.

Belmont House Care & Nursing Home Belmont House located in Stocksbridge in Sheffield, provides the highest standards of family led nursing, residential and dementia care. Our home is comfortably furnished, whilst retaining a warm family atmosphere that makes Belmont House feel extra special. • Tailored meaningful activities • 24 hour nursing care • Person centred dementia care • Home-cooked nutritious food • Spacious and secure garden • Dedicated residential care

Court Care and Nursing Homes remain Covid-19 free at this time and all of the measures we have implemented for these visits are designed to keep it that way. This means that visits will be different from before, but we are sure that people will understand why. “These visits have been able to happen because of the hard work of all our homes to keep residents safe and it has been amazing to see how much it means to everyone.”

First team fall just short as seconds make it three in a row At the halfway stage both sides now felt that they could win the game, Parkhead were happy with 174 on the board, particularly from the trouble they we’re in before. And Stocksbridge knew that the ever reliable batting track at Bracken Moor meant they had an excellent chance. Stocksbridge it was who got off to a good start, openers Matt Price and Jack Newton were watchful and looked to score when possible. This week Price was playing more of the aggressor as he struck a few early boundaries, couple of fours were followed by a lovely straight six.

Parkhead first XI 174 all out (37.1 overs) Jake Vickers 3-38 Stocksbridge first XI 154 all out (38.2 overs) Jack Newton 46 WITH the sun beating down over the glorious Bracken Moor, Stocksbridge first XI welcome last years league champions Parkhead for what was set to be an excellent contest. Parkhead won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite winning the toss, things didn’t go to plan for Parkhead, both opening batters went in quick succession. In an unusual tactic, both openers attempted quick singles to Joe Hibbert at short fine leg on two separate occasions to hand Stocksbridge two early wickets. Andy Hibbert restricted the visitors and quickly got his first wicket of the day as Park-

head were now three down. Change bowlers Jake Vickers and Liam Grayson came into the attack and both grabbed a wicket each and Parkhead now looked in trouble at 38-5. But in typical Parkhead style they weren’t going to go down without a fight, Thompson and Turner offered some resilience and Parkhead were now 100-5. Vickers then removed both Thompson and Turner in the same over, Jon Pickford taking an excellent catch to remove Thompson and Stocksbridge now firmly in the driving seat again. Unfortunately for Stocksbridge, Parkhead batter Dave Spillman had other ideas, through a mixture of brutal hitting and riding his luck Spillman added a quick half century before falling shortly after but Parkhead had managed to scrap up to a more then respectable 174 all out.

Price was just starting to look comfortable before Turner got a big breakthrough as one snuck through Price’s defence and Stocksbridge were now one down. Next in was Chris Stocksbridge CC second team travelled to Pickford and he joined Newton. Castle Dyke to play Hallam CC 5th team The pair batted well together adding valuable looking to maintain their 100% start to the runs and began to wear the Parkhead bowlers season. Hallam won the toss and chose to bat down and Stocksbridge were now 90-1. The and were soon in trouble with a great openturning point came when both Newton (46) ing spell from youngster Rowan Brearley and and Pickford (20) fell in quick succession, this Will Cavanagh left the home team 40-5. gave Parkhead a sniff of blood and they suddenly went up a gear. The Stocksbridge middle order was quickly wiped out and now Stocksbridge were 110-8 with six overs to go.

After last week’s poor catching performance normal service was resumed with two catches from Matt Hague and one from Jack Murfin led the way. Middle order runs from Luke Hopkins moved the home team towards some sort of target until a smart run out from Jack Firth and wickets from Paul Hargreaves, Les Harris, Will Cavanagh and captain Jack Murfin to bowl Hallam out for 113.

A late rally from Joe Hibbert and Jake Vickers made Parkhead sweat when Stocksbridge got up to 153-8 with three overs to go. Joe Hibbert was then bowled looking for quick runs and his father Andy Hibbert soon after as Stocksbridge fell 20 runs short as they were all out Stocksbridge’s reply was positive and brisk for 154 in what in truth was an excellent game with an opening partnership of 60 between of cricket. Elliot Freeman and Chris Ogley put the leaders in a strong position. Then some fluid Hallam fifth XI 113 all out (36.3 overs) stroke play from the in form Jack Reeves took Will Cavanagh 3-18 Stocksbridge to victory in just 16 overs and Rowan Brearley 3-24 stay top of the table. Stocksbridge 2nd XI 114-1 (16 overs) Next weekend sees the second XI host Baslow Chris Ogley 40* with the first XI still facing some confusion as Jack Reeves 30* the when they will lock horns with Totley. Elliott Freeman 25

CONSISTENT PLAYERS MAKE TOP THREE THREE players who have all been showing consistently good form in the last few weeks took the first three places in the midweek stableford competition on Thursday July 30. Wayne Lazenby (21) improved on his third place two weeks ago to win the competition with 41 points beating Chay Murphy (12) also on 41 points with a better back nine. Chay’s last four rounds have all been below his handicap which has now dropped by one shot. Richard Hastings (17) took third place with 40 points. Richard’s consistent play has seen his handicap drop by three shots since the restart.

The weekend competition for the Kilbride cup was a two day medal competition requiring consistent form over the two rounds. Jay Whittaker (20) maintained his lead after the first round to produce two excellent rounds of net 62 and net 66 to win the trophy with a total of 128 strokes. Brad Lawton (14) who won the Turner/Hobson memorial trophy the previous week took second place with a net 132, nudging Trevor Moseley (11) in to third place also scoring a net 132. Brad Lawton’s form since golf restarted after the lockdown has been very impressive indeed and has seen his handicap reduce by five shots including an exceptional scoring reduction of one shot

following his victory the previous week. The ladies back nine stableford competition played on Friday July 31 was won convincingly by Margaret Pearson with 20 points, a clear winner ahead of Heather Evans in second place on 15 points and Liana O’Sullivan in third also on 15 points. The competition for the Ladies Glen Trophy on Sunday August 2 was a close call for the winner Alison Sedgwick (35) with a net score of 70. On the same net score of 70 but losing out on the back nine was Ann Whitfield with Charlotte Colley (06) a very promising junior player taking third place with a very consistent round, including eleven pars, of 72.

Next weekend sees the third round of the club championship with gents competing for the Russell Bradbury Trophy and the ladies playing for the Olivia Rose Bowl The course is in fantastic condition and visitors are welcomed to come and experience

a round and marvel at the views from the top of the course. The course suits golfers of all standards from beginners to professional with challenging par threes and some very inviting tee shots from the elevated tees.
