Memorial stone given fitting new home THIS year marks the 75th anniversary of VE and VJ Days, after the conclusion of the Second World War I 1945. As part of the 1995 commemoration, the Royal British Legion and Fellowship of Services had a memorial stone placed in St Matthias Church, Stocksbridge. With the church now being closed, the Royal British Legion were able to remove the memorial stone with the intention of placing it somewhere else. The Clock Tower Gardens were suggested and it has now been placed on the wall just above the steps leading on to the gardens. Permission to do this was granted.

STOTTERCLIFFE Cemetery in Penistone has been a victim of thoughtless vandalism. The costs to repair this dry stone wall are estimated to be over £10,000. If anyone has any information, please email safer@barnsley.gov.uk.

Tim Curson of the Royal British Legion commented: “On Wednesday August 12, the memorial stone was fixed on the wall by Builders Colin and Eric Brooke and on behalf of the Stocksbridge and Deepcar Royal British Legion branch I would like to thank them for all their help and time they have given both with the removing and replacing of the memorial stone. “Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus, we have not been able to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE and VJ Day as we would have liked. The wording on the memorial stone is a tribute to the wartime generations.”

Oughtibridge beekeeper shortlisted in national competition AN Oughtibridge beekeeper has been shortlisted in a national competition revealing a snapshot of business during lockdown Louise Hurst, founder of Bone Shaker Balm, entered the PopUp Business School Summer Photo Challenge with a picture of herself at her apiary. Louise said: "From an early age, I've known that one day, I would have my own business, I just didn't know what that would look like. "There are many reasons I wanted to own my own business. Starting my own business allows me to make a living while pursuing something I have a passion for and find the freedom from a 9-5 desk job, I also get to learn new skills and meet lots of new people. "Another big driving factor is the bee populations are in decline and it is very important that everyone plays the part to protect them. "The pandemic has been a big one for me and my company as I am a start up and April 2020 was my planned launch date. I had my first trade show planned, that was cancelled, so I had

Belmont House Care & Nursing Home Belmont House located in Stocksbridge in Sheffield, provides the highest standards of family led nursing, residential and dementia care. to try and find some other way to start selling, especially as my plan was to sell to trade.

"Everything had to go online and I had to try and generate sales that way, however, this is almost impossible when you and your company are unknown. "I am getting more and more interest and I have changed my plan. I have decided to try and get as much coverage as I can get so the product gets noticed and, hopefully, sales will follow." Louise's products, which include hand balm and tattoo balm, are made in small batches with natural ingredients. She adds: "I love making and developing my own personal care items by hand and from scratch. I use natural ingredients that would not exist without bees. "I only use the excess wax from the bee hives and would never take anything from their nest. This means my products won't cause an environmental impact or any distress to the honey bees."

PopUp Business School, which helps people from all walks of life to launch their own businesses, is asking people across the UK to take a photograph which illustrates their business, or business idea, with the chance to win up to £200. CEO Simon Paine said: “Business has changed so much in the past few months, we thought it'd be really interesting to get a glimpse into their world. “We know many businesses have moved their operations online and are interacting and serving customers in a different way. “However, due to lockdown, this has all been happening behind closed doors. We've seen far less of one another so it's going to be great to take a look inside.” The competition is open for entries until midnight on August 31. You can find out more and submit your own entry at: popupbusinessschool.co.uk/ photo-challenge.html

Collagen Induction Therapy Course Nationally Recognised & Accredited Course by ABBINI Training ABBINI Training School is offering a nationally recognised and accredited course on Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), a revolutionary aesthetic technique used to treat a variety of skin problems. ABBINI is the aesthetic division of Geopace Training that has been delivering award-winning healthcare courses to the NHS since 2010. The course is run by a dedicated team of qualified healthcare professionals and Aesthetic Therapists. ABBINI has over 78 training locations in the UK and Ireland. Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), also known to the general public as microneedling, is a minimally-invasive aesthetic procedure that uses small needles to create tiny pricks to boost the skin’s own collagen production and generate new, smoother,

Leisure United football pitches reopen to public STATE of the art football pitches at SGP Thorncliffe reopened to members of the public from Monday August 10. The sites, which have been closed due to coronavirus restrictions, are now available to book, after the Government further relaxed restrictions, allowing more sports and leisure facilities to operate. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council said: “Football is a primary sport for so many in Sheffield and it’s a brilliant way to be active and healthy, so it’s great news that players can get back on these fantastic purpose built pitches. “We have worked closely with our operating partners to make sure the necessary measures are in place to enable players to take part safely and in line with Government guidance.

“I know this will be welcome news to our teams who train and play on the pitches regularly, even if things are a bit different to usual. We ask that all taking part act responsibly, adhering to the rules in place and help us keep this environment safe for everyone.” The site is managed by the Sheffield Football Trust on behalf of Sheffield City Council. The Sheffield City Council Trustee, Cllr Anne Murphy said: “It is great news that the football facilities are reopening and great timing for the young people in the City to get back to training and playing matches.”

firmer, clearer, and more beautiful skin tissues. CIT is a scientificallyproven approach that has been used for decades to treat wrinkles, scarring, stretch marks, sun damage, spider veins, and pigmentation. It is also widely used to improve the tone and texture of the skin. CIT is a relatively painless procedure. Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) treatment is an additional technique that is usually combined with microneedling to generate more collagen by using a client’s own blood. The Collagen Induction Therapy course is delivered online through 15 theoretical modules and 6 practical classroom-based sessions. The course covers the following aspects: • Theoretical knowledge in Collagen Induction Therapy: What it is, how it is done, what are the benefits and possible complications. • Practical classes on Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) • Practical sessions on face dummies to ensure students develop the skills needed to become autonomous. • The legal requirements in aesthetic therapy: consent forms and guidelines. • Teaches students everything they need to know to start offering Collagen Induction Therapy as a service, including the equipment needed. The course is also fully compliant with the government’s HEE guidelines for Aesthetic Therapists. By the end of the course, students will be

fully independent in preparing clients for Platelet-rich Plasma and will be able to offer Collagen Induction Therapy in complete compliance with the government’s guidelines. After completing the course, all students will receive a nationally recognised Level 4 Certificate, thus opening the doors to new job opportunities in the field of aesthetic therapy. ABBINI also offers additional courses on PRP treatment and phlebotomy. Past students from ABBINI are successfully working as employed Aesthetic Therapists in salons or independently from their own private clinics. Over the past few years, ABBINI has received numerous positive feedback from happy and satisfied students. Now certified in aesthetic therapy, Julie from Portsmouth affirms, “Three weeks after my course I have a full-time job.” Roxanne from Rochester acknowledges, “I was offered the position due to the fact that I had put myself through your course.” Paul from Glasgow affirms, “The course and the mentors were fantastic and really knowledgeable.” Grab your chance to become a certified Aesthetic Therapist now! WESTWOOD GOES LIVE AND ONLINE A spokesperson for Westwood said: “It was totally pioneering and new ground for us, but we were committed as an organisation whose charitable objective is ‘to prevent social exclusion’ to keep families and individuals connected as a community albeit online. “We created a YouTube Channel for Westwood along with closed Facebook groups for our various online creative activities; plus being on a steep learning curve ourselves with technology.

WESTWOOD 2015, a small charity based in the localities of High Green and Chapeltown found itself ‘high and dry’ at the start of lockdown with community activities cancelled and venues it ran events in closed for the foreseeable future. As an organisation with the objective of preventing people from becoming socially exclude,’ it was itself facing exclusion and isolation – the very opposite of what is should be doing. But the charity took the decision to launch Westwood Live and moved their community activities online within 10 days of lockdown.

“We succeeded with initially very little funding, but with a small group of committed volunteers to design, develop and deliver creative online activities for both individuals and children and carers. “We ran pilot craft type activities like Button Tree Art for adults, providing activity packs. producing and posting a video online to support the individuals whilst they did the craft activity. “We ran a series of weekly local history films, based on the Newton Chambers Works on our YouTube channel, and on the first week of the films we had over a 100 views “These first steps turned out to be a huge success; we responded, and did not react as an organisation to the crisis the country and our lo-

calities were facing. We saw it as an opportunity and not an obstacle to try new ways of working. “We came up with an idea called ‘Playing In’; an inclusion programme working with socially isolated and excluded families by running a series of online creative activity sessions which were provided free of charge. “In these craft sessions a facilitator demonstrated via a self created video on YouTube in which families in isolation will be able to watch the craft activity and then undertake it in their own home. “Craft Packs were delivered or posted to families who registered with us online and overall we sent out just over 600 packs and we are grateful for the funding we received from The Lottery, South Yorkshire Community Foundation, Tesco Bags of Help and other sources. “Without this our initiative would not have made such an impact as it did and we received great feedback.” Participant J wrote, "So lockdown was pretty tough for me. I had a new baby which was six weeks old at the beginning, I’d had surgery and with a very busy toddler. “I pretty much had no help through the day as my partner worked most

of lockdown and obviously had no contact with my mum and dad, friends and not even any health visitor so it was just me and my two girls.

“I would certainly say the activities have helped with our mental health and made things feel “normal” which is what of course everyone wants.”

“The weather wasn’t always great which made things a bit more challenging but the activity packs brought a bit of light. We looked forward to opening the envelopes and seeing what surprises were inside. It gave us time to focus on something nice instead of the negativity. “In doing the crafts, it’s enabled us to spread the love to family members and neighbours too. We often made things and posted them to nannans and grandads. Whenever we did anything we took a photo and sent it to family so they could feel connected and be involved in what we were doing even though we were apart. “I feel the activities have helped with my three-year-old’s development. She loves making things and I’ve been able to show her what to do and she’s done things independently. We didn’t have the items in the house, due to not being able to go out and buy so it was nice to have them to hand. Most days she would say, “Are we having a crafty morning mummy?”

Leading Sheffield firm signs JAWBONE up to sponsor the first room CAR BOOT SALE at Paces’ new home Inline with government guidelines and local council approval

Oughtibridge Lane, S35 0HN Sunday 23 August | 8am - 12noon

Sheffield-based business Professional Energy Purchasing will become a charity partner supporting the new Adult Life Skills Room which will be a key part of the new facility following their move away from their current High Green location. Under development just off the Sheffield Parkway, it is hoped the centre, which will be a national hub for conductive education, will open in 2022.

THE plans for a new home for Paces, the South Yorkshire specialist centre, charity and school for children and adults with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders,

are receiving another boost as a leading Sheffield firm signs up as the first sponsor of a room in the £3.6 million building.

Paces has worked with individuals living with neurological conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, strokes, MS, Parkinson’s, and brain injuries since 1997. They teach children life-changing skills using conductive education - such as sitting, standing, walking, speaking, communication and self-care - in an environment they can have fun, develop friendships, and feel like they belong. This support is close to the heart of the managing director of the award-winning independent energy consultancy. Linda Spencer’s son

Your regular support will help St Luke’s continue into the future ST Luke’s Hospice has launched an urgent fundraising appeal as it prepares to maintain its vital work beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. The charity has maintained its core patient care services to the people of Sheffield throughout the international coronavirus crisis. That means the St Luke’s Integrated Community Nursing Team has cared for up to 450 people in their own homes at any one time, while the In Patient Centre team has continued to provide 24-hour specialist palliative care for up to 20 patients at any one time. St Luke’s has provided extra support to families caring for loved ones at home, patients who before the pandemic and subsequent visiting restrictions may have been cared for in hospital. And the St Luke’s Clinical teams have been supporting nursing and care homes, using face to face video technology to develop skills and share experience in providing palliative care. But with the St Luke’s shops having closed for more than three months

and major fundraising events cancelled, the charity’s finances have been badly hit. “The coronavirus pandemic is having a devastating effect on St Luke’s financially, and we know its impact won’t go away quickly - it is a long term threat,” said Director of Income Generation, Media and Marketing Kathryn Burkitt. “To keep delivering high quality care through the pandemic we’ve reduced costs where we can and taken advantage of all available government support schemes but we’ve still had to dig deep into our financial reserves to ensure we can get through this difficult time. “But this cannot be sustained indefinitely - our traditional sources of income ceased in March, with fundraising events cancelled and our charity shops closing their doors for many months and there will be no immediate recovery. “It is hard to estimate the losses we have experienced but we expect our income to be hit with a loss of around £100,000 per month over the year, even after government support.

“St Luke’s will suffer from the financial impact of this pandemic for several years to come which is why we are asking our supporters to help us in our recovery by setting up a monthly donation.” The charity’s new fundraising campaign points out that a £6 a month donation could contribute to nutritionally balanced food packages that are prepared and delivered to patients at home who are perhaps shielding or unable to cook for themselves. A £12 a month donation could go towards the cost of the St Luke’s community nurses delivering vital care and pain relief to patients when needed, in the comfort of their own homes. And £18 a month could contribute to the ongoing cost of providing the St Luke’s 24 hour specialist palliative care for up to 20 patients at a time at the hospice’s In Patient Centre. “Our challenge now, with the help of our supporters, is to plan with regular, predictable income,” said Kathryn.

“When the world stopped, we did not - we are still here 24/7, still visiting our patients in their own homes, still caring for patients on the In Patient Centre and we are still supporting families during lockdown. “Whether caring for patients in their own homes or on our In Patient Centre, our care hasn’t changed. “Things might look different on the outside, but behind the protective equipment we are determined to continue providing the same dignified and compassionate care, tailored to each patient’s needs. “Annual government funding covers just 25 per cent of the money needed to keep St Luke’s running and even with additional emergency government funding, we are dependent on the generosity of people across Sheffield and beyond to provide the rest so we can continue to support patients and families. Will you give what you can?” To find out more about St Luke’s and its campaign for monthly donations visit stlukeshospice.org.uk

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Stocksbridge ladies lead the way as Hogg and Rogan achieve consecutive wins SCORCHING temperatures proved too much to bear for some on Tuesday August 11 in the Wortley Ladies Open AM AM when two teams had to retire because of the heat.

Hastings (16) continuing his fine form to take third place with 41 points Saturday August 15 saw the men competing for the Cumberland Cup in the fourth round of the club championship, a stableford competition which saw some high scores. After winning the Russell Bradbury Trophy last week, Andy Hogg (26) bagged his second trophy to win back-to-back competitions with 44 points again with a better back nine beating David Price (27) also on 44 points and Stuart Marsh (21) was third with 42 points.

But the sun certainly shone on the Stocksbridge representatives of Liana O’Sullivan, Hilja O’Sullivan and Beverly Sykes who teamed up with Wortley (and ex Stocksbridge) member Ann Crawshaw and overcame all obstacles to win the competition. With the two best stableford scores to count on each hole, they posted a winning team score of 78 points. Liana also collected the two’s club prize hitting her tee shot to 12 feet on the 12th hole. Mole praises landlords SHEFFIELD Tigers Speedway co-promoter Peter Mole has sung the praises of their Owlerton landlords for their supportive attitude during a difficult time.

A&S Leisure are hosting behind closed doors greyhound racing but the speedway league season has been completely wiped out. But on the positive side, with crowds possibly returning to sporting venues in October, Mole says the club and the stadium will be more than

ready to host Premiership racing next spring.

“From the moment we walked through the door they have supported us right from day one, Mole said. “They fully supported our move into the top flight Premiership for this year as well, they’ve encouraged us to make the most of the new, stunning, state of the art hospitality facilities on bend one and we are very lucky that they make life as easy as they do for us at Sheffield.

“Owlerton’s business plan is very robust - and they openly admit that we are a very big part of their plans going forward. “I visited the stadium for the first time in a fair few months last week and they are so savvy and so COVID aware - knowing they’ll have had so much experience in dealing with people by the time the tapes go up next March is very reassuring for us as a club.

Church continue pre-season PENISTONE Church beat Sheffield FC in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, with Tom Cadzow scoring the only goal of the game on 69 minutes.

As with the previous Church game at Emley AFC last Monday, this was a game of two halves with two separate elevens representing the club each period. Church edged the first half with the Sheffield keeper being kept busy with efforts from Tom Charlesworth, Jordan Coduri, Brett Lovell and others. They carried on in the second half with a near miss by Reece High. However the game could have turned when Sheffield were awarded a penalty. Keeper Adam Rhodes marked his return from long term injury with a fine save, diving to his right. Church manager Ian Richards said after the game: “It’s great to be back playing football on a Saturday, I know it’s a pre-season game but it’s great to be back be-

ing at home, being in our changing room preparing for a football match.

“I was really pleased with the performance as much as I was with Monday’s (at Emley). Sheffield FC are a good side, they’re a good football club. “We played two different elevens again each half and in both halves I thought we were the better team, I thought both elevens played particularly well, what was really pleasing is that both halves we kept a clean sheet. So overall that’s four45 minutes with four different teams and four clean sheets. “It’s great we’ve had a little bit longer in training to implement things, to get players to apply things and then you see that on the grass in a game and it was brilliant.”

WHEELERS BACK ON THE ROAD RACING resumed last weekend for members of Birdwell Wheelers. All racing had been suspended from March 17 due to the coronavirus but with the gradual easing of the lockdown under strict guidelines to maintain distancing, time trialling has restarted. Wheelers Trevor Mayne and Paul Heggie rode in the Tickhill Velo 10 mile time trial at Hatfield Woodhouse. On a warm day when the course record was broken by local

professional Connor Swift in 19 min 09 sec, Mayne finished in 23 min 50 sec whilst Heggie was further behind in 26 min 39 sec. Due to the restrictions on maximum gatherings of 6 people the club have currently suspended the Sunday club rides. These will resume when government guidelines allow. More details on all the above can be found at http://www. birdwellwheelerscyclingclub. co.uk

On a wicket that looked bowler friendly, Stocksbridge captain Andy Hibbert lost the toss and surprisingly Stocksbridge were asked to bowl first. Joe Hibbert took the new ball and got them off to a flyer, taking a wicket with the fifth ball of the innings leaving Staff 0-1 from the first over. The number three batsman rode his luck with some questionable shots but was outfoxed and clean bowled by Stocksbridge captain Andy Hibbert. This left Staff 17-2 and with a lot of work to do. The first change bowlers Liam Grayson and Les Harris came into

the attack and hit their lengths straight away using the wicket to their advantage. From here on, Staff couldn’t get going and Stocksbridge began to strengthen their grip on the innings with some excellent bowling and fielding. With Harris and Grayson causing problems off the wicket, Staff were restricted to 44-6 with both Grayson and Harris taking two wickets each in the process.

at the back end of the innings picking up one wicket with his spin. All in all, a great start to the game with the 1st bowers working in pairs to cause problems for the Staff batters. Even though Stocksbridge were chasing a small target, the pitch was very bowler friendly so the batters needed to concentrate and get off to a good start.

caught at mid off with the score at 33 for two. In bizarre fashion, another wicket followed quickly with Pickford timing a lovely straight drive, only for it to be deflected on to the stumps by the bowlers foot to run Dave Smith out. This left Stocksbridge 35 for three with a few nerves starting to kick in. Pickford and Harry Hurst battled hard in difficult conditions but both quickly followed each other to the pavilion. This left them at 52 for five and the nerves had now definitely crept in.

Both openers Matt Price and Jack Newton dug in and battled hard in the opening overs hitting five boundaries between them to release some early pressure. Newton was the first to go as we was bowled with the score 28 for one.

The innings continued to derail for Staff and the visitors were well and truly in control from start to finish. Chris Pickford came into the attack with twelve overs to go and bowled aggressively and accurately. He took three wickets to clean up the innings, restricting Staff to 88 all out. Jack Newton also bowled excellently

A partnership was needed and in came Steve Perry and Liam Grayson. Both batted positively and looked to shift the momentum back in the Stocksbridge’s favour. The pair quickly got going into their stride hitting boundary after

boundary. Stocksbridge were back on top and edging closer to a victory. The pair put on a important 37 for the fifth wicket to guide the side home to an important win to end the losing streak. Perry and Grayson both ended up on 17 not out, two huge knocks in the context of the game and a difficult batting wicket. Back to winnings ways, the first team entertain Sheffield Collegiate on Saturday at Bracken Moor and will be looking to put a run together from now till the end of the season. The second team will look to bounce back from consecutive defeats as they travel to Sheffield Transport.
