FAMILY SAY GOODBYE TO PC FAMILY members and colleagues said a final farewell to PC Matt Lannie, the South Yorkshire Police road traffic officer who died in the line of duty while responding to an emergency. PC Lannie – a treasured son, partner and friend – tragically died in a collision on Nether Lane in Ecclesfield on Tuesday April 21. At his funeral in Grenoside on Tuesday, his loved ones remembered him as a thoughtful, kind and funny man who can never be replaced. PC Lannie’s mum, Cheryl Raybould, said: “Not only was Matt ex-military and a serving police officer, he was a loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, colleague and best friend to many. “He had achieved so much in his career - and lived his life to the absolute brim out of the uniform too. “He had a great sense of humour and a cheeky charm. The way he told a story would have everyone in fits of laughter - only he could

get away with the banter he gave, as you could not help but love him and crack up laughing too. “He loved his family and friends, and always had time for each and every one. He was so thoughtful, kind and funny.

“It broke our hearts to lose him and we miss him every day. He was such a special person, we hope he’s in a special place, we love him so dearly and he can never be replaced. In a tribute for his son, PC Lannie’s dad, James Lannie, said: “I know we have not always lived in each other’s pockets as we are both welltravelled and have led busy lives. But it was always nice when you were mentioned in conversation as I was extremely proud to say I was your father and you were my son. “I am so proud of everything you achieved and all that you have done in your life. Rest in peace, until we meet again. The loss of PC Lannie has been felt by all those who knew him. His SYP unit, roads policing team four,

has paid tribute to an incredible officer and friend. In a joint statement, his colleagues said: “Matt, we will remember you in our stories and the laughter we shared. You will always be part of our team and your memory will live on. “You will always be known for your larger than life character, your infectious smile and your passion for your job. You wore your uniform with pride. “You had the ability to light up a room with your charismatic nature and smile.

“Your friendly banter made the office a brighter place to be. We are honoured to have worked alongside you, you have left a huge hole in not only our team but the wider SYP family. PC Lannie joined South Yorkshire Police in 2012, working in Sheffield. In 2017, he transferred to the force’s Operational Support Unit and remained part of the OSU until his tragic death.

“I had the pleasure of working with him on a number of occasions and we all miss him. Chief Constable Stephen Watson QPM has also thanked PC Lannie for his service. He said: “Matt died in the line of duty and dreadful events such as these serve to remind us of the great dangers that police officers confront every day in order to keep us all safe. “Matt’s dedication to protect the public is testament to his courage and professionalism, he was an upstanding constable and to protect us he made the ultimate sacrifice. “We must ensure that Matt’s memory lives on. Matt was loved by everyone and his kind and humorous nature is reflected in the conversations I have had with colleagues. “Matt, we thank you for your service and honour your memory.

Many people may be unaware of this beautiful little village and its close location to Wortley, Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Penistone. My visit last week left me sat looking out at the breathtaking views. I was totally blown away. Horse riders passed by and waved, neighbours out gardening met me with friendly conversation. Signs at the end of farm gates advised of fresh eggs and milk for sale. The quiet and relaxing atmosphere of this village was something to be truly appreciated. A short distance away from hustle and bustle but near enough for my every day needs. Public Transport is available on the main road and the local community

provides services and groups for all ages. Local footpaths give lead to great walks to explore surrounding countryside. Walking through ‘The Delph’ I saw the ‘Bug Hotel’ constructed by local residents. There are local cricket and rugby clubs including teams for youngsters, with many other sports locally available. The village has a newly refitted park and there’s The Millennium Green Trust is a communal garden, funded, tendered and cared for by the local community for all to enjoy. VJ Day celebration raises over £600

Local News

Sheffield City Council continues financial support for care homes sector SHEFFIELD City Council is to continue financial support for the care homes sector by focusing on those providers under the most financial pressure. This follows intensive work with care homes across the city and the Council is today sharing its plans to focus financial support on providers experiencing the most significant financial pressures due to COVID-19.

THE 75th Anniversary of VJ Day – the day when the war with Japan came to an end - was celebrated in Chapeltown on Saturday August 15.

There was a restored Jeep, fancy dress competition, cakes, tombola and a raffle to raise money for the SSAFA armed forces charity.

Diane Round from Ooops a Daisy had organised the day, with lots of local businesses getting involved. Over £600 was raised for charity.

Councillor George LindarsHammond, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Sheffield City Council, said: “We have looked at a range of options for allocating funding across the sector’s vacancies differently. This ensures we take a targeted approach in supporting the market where a provider highlights specific risks that are linked to vacancies and/or loss of income.”

Over £10m worth of investment has been put into the care homes sector to ensure it is able to respond and provide high quality residential care for those who need it. The Council has delivered a range of support for care homes throughout the pandemic in addition to financial support which includes accessing emergency staffing, value for money PPE and providing advice and guidance. It continues to work proactively with care home owners to identify and mitigate risks. Those care homes experiencing financial or operating difficulty need to contact the Council where advice and support will be made available. Cllr Lindars-Hammond, added: “During these extraordinary times we have recognised, and acted upon, ensuring financial and other

vital support has been made available to our care homes. Our priority is to protect our most vulnerable and we have worked with the care home sector to do all we can to support them and I want to thank them, their staff and residents, for all they have had to deal with during this time. “The Council, itself under huge financial pressures due to the pandemic, has a responsibility to make sure public funds are used wisely and businesses who provide care and are at risk of closure, due to COVID-19 are important. The homes they provide for residents in Sheffield need to be protected. I encourage any care home provider who is experiencing financial difficulty to get in touch immediately.”

Intel led warrant leads to £3k drugs recovery in Thorpe Hesley

Threat ‘still very real’ warns mayor SHEFFIELD City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis has warned that Coronavirus still poses a very real threat, and in South Yorkshire the situation remains precarious. Reacting to the news that coronavirus cases in South Yorkshire are still above the national average, Mayor Dan Jarvis said: “In the five months since the country was put into lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus, we have made great sacrifices to protect the NHS and save lives.

OFFICERS from Rotherham CID recovered 60 wraps of suspected cocaine, worth over £3,000, after a warrant was executed in Thorpe Hesley on Friday August 21. The raid was carried out at the address in Raven Drive after police received intelligence about drug dealing in the area. A 28-year-old man from Rotherham was arrested at the scene on

suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A.

people that we do act on any information passed to us.

Detective Inspector Scott Szymczak said: “My team constantly look for opportunities to disrupt organised crime across Rotherham, particularly around the distribution of drugs which often has links to violent crime.

“On this occasion, a quantity of suspected class A with an estimated street value of £3,000 has been taken off our streets which is an excellent result.

“Residents across the town continuously tell us that they want to see us taking action to tackle drugs, and I would like to assure

“I encourage anyone with concerns about drugs supply to get in touch either via 101, via their local neighbourhood team, or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously.”

7

“As a result, shops, pubs, restaurants, cinemas and places of worship are now open, and we can meet up with friends and family again. But we must not become complacent as a result. Coronavirus still poses a very real threat, and in South Yorkshire the situation remains precarious, with the latest data showing a significantly higher rate of infection than the national average. We have just regained many aspects of normal life, but if cases rise beyond acceptable levels, we will have no alternative but to give them up once more. “To keep ourselves and others safe, and avoid that painful choice, we all have a responsibility to follow

the guidelines. That means working from home where possible, regularly washing your hands for at least 20 seconds, social distancing, and keeping at least two metres away from people outside your household or support bubble whenever possible. Crucially, you must self-isolate and get tested for COVID if you develop symptoms or otherwise suspect – even slightly – that you might be infected. And if you are returning from abroad, you must follow the rules on quarantine. “I’m continuing to work with our local authorities and the NHS to assess the situation in South Yorkshire. We are closely monitoring the data and will act quickly if we do need to introduce further measures to reduce the spread of the virus in our region. “Without a vaccine the only way to prevent the spread of this virus is by following the guidelines, and working together to protect our health and the health of others. We need everyone in South Yorkshire to continue following the rules so we can make more progress and further relax the lockdown measures – rather than having to make them stricter.”

CONFUSION OVER DEFIBRILLATOR A DEFIBRILLATOR attached to a damaged toilet block is at the centre of a confusing episode, with Ecclesfield Parish Council saying it is safe to use and a Chapeltown councillor saying it is not.

A post on Ecclesfield Parish Council’s Facebook page read, “Just for clarification, the defibrillator in front of the Chapeltown toilets is and always has been in full working order. “Sheffield Ambulance Service has confirmed that having the fence around the toilets is not a safety issue and in emergency the public can access the equipment.” However, Councillor Paul Brunt is keen to get the message across that the defibrillator is not safe to use. Cllr Brunt told Look Local: “As one of four councillors for Chapeltown, I am alarmed at the advice posted on the page and the potential loss of life through following inaccurate advice. “In April, a stolen lorry crashed into the public toilets making the building unsafe. It is still fenced off for this reason and the defibrillator is situated within the fenced off area. “The building itself is the property of Sheffield City Council, however the parish council own the defibrillator and we have a contract with a company that cleans the toilets and maintains the defibrillator, this can not be done at present due the unsafe structure!

But we are under contract to make the continuous payments. “Due to the nature of the accident, with the fact it was a stolen vehicle, nothing is happening with making the site secure for public use. I understand that SCC are seeking insurance cover through their own insurers.

“Should anyone be unfortunate to need the use of a defibrillator, I don’t want you to waste valuable life saving time as the defibrillator is fenced off and inaccessible. “The nearest two defibrillators to Chapeltown toilets are the one up at the scout camp and one outside the Acorn pub.”

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

PRE SEASON ACTION LOCAL football teams continued their Penistone Church recorded two draws, with a preparation for the new season with pre 2-2 result at home against Emley, after Worsseason friendlies. borough had to pull out at the last minute, and a 1-1 tie with Shelley away from home. FINNEY CONTINUES FINE FORM

“Emley were very good and they worked extremely hard. It was a really good competitive game. We deserved to be 2-0 down, I was disappointed because we had been so good defensively in the first two pre-season games and then we were just too open especially in and around our penalty box. At half time they’d had six shots fall on target and it’s uncharacteristic for us. Second half we played our system of play better and played their system miles better. “We dominated the game throughout they didn’t have one shot on goal, they rarely came into our half, we were first class second half, with some really good individual performances and a really good collective performance with real intensity to our play, the only negative from that is that we didn’t convert. “We only won that second half 1-0 when really from the chances we had it should have been more. That’s something we need to get in to good habits with, the conversion rate.”

KYLE HOWARTH BEGINS REHAB

KYLE Howarth has started specialist rehab on his recovering shoulder. Sheffield Tigers Speedway favourite Howarth decided to go under the knife to correct the problem with dislocations occurring too often. And he’s keeping a close eye on talk of the possibility of a British Final being staged in September as he would be keen to do some meetings before the winter. “It’s good to start the rehab because it really feels like we’re making good progress,” he said. “I’ve started working with Steve Williams down in the West Midlands who is a specialist in sports injury treatment and has helped loads of riders down the years. “In addition one of the GB Speedway team fitness specialists Chris Neville has made himself available to help me which I’m eternally grateful for. “Hopefully this will speed up the process of recovery and get it back fit and strong, as good as new.” Speculation has been gathering pace about the sport’s bosses looking to put a British Final on before October. “I haven’t heard anything official but if it does happen I would love to be considered if I’ve recovered in time,” he said. “I would love to do some meetings before the winter, to be honest. I can’t remember the last time I had been off the bike this long so I’m keen to get back on it doing some laps.”

ANDREW Finney has played some very high quality and consistent golf since Stocksbridge and District Golf Club was able to reopen in early June.

cap by a range of one to five shots on 15 occasions. For nearly all amateur and perhaps many professional golfers, that is an amazing run of excellent form.

Andrew, who is already an accomplished golfer and regular member of the League Team, has reduced his handicap from five to three since the club competitions re-commenced on June 6. During that time he has played some very consistent golf, winning four singles and one pairs competitions, with his brother Peter.

Andrew comes from a golfing family and with his commitment to practice it is perhaps no surprise that he is in the middle of such a great run.

He has also had six top three finishes, so it is no wonder that his handicap has dropped by three shots during this hot streak. In 19 rounds of competition since the start of June Andrew has played better than his handi-

Meanwhile, the results at the club over the last week are as follows. The Mid-Week Stableford on August 20 was won by Phillip Jepson (12) with an excellent 41 points. Phillip’s round included an eagle on the eighth and birdies on the 11th and 13th. Ben Stringer (6) took second place with 38 points, the same score as Paul Blake (8), but with a better back nine.

The weekend saw very windy and occasionally very wet conditions on the back of Storm Ellen, but nearly 70 hardy golfers took part in the two day Cumberland Cup. In the tricky weather conditions and with a stroke play format competitors were faced with a stiff test of their abilities. Ash Howe (7) came home victorious with two steady net rounds of 63 and 64, finishing four under par. Two shots back in second place was Mick Hulbert (12) after rounds of 67 and 62. Jordan Flower (17) finished with the same net score after rounds of 64 and 65, but was pipped by Mick’s better second round. Mighty Mick Shouler (13) finished fourth with a net 130 (64 and 66) and Nick Wood (13) was fifth with a net 131 (64 and 67).

LAST Saturday saw Birdwell Wheeler Paul Heggie ride his first 25 mile time trial of the truncated season. The event organised by Sherwood CC took place on the A46 near Newark.

A strong tailwind on the out leg meant riders sped to the turn and then battled the headwind on the return leg. Heggie clocked 1h 5m 47s which placed him 93rd and set a new club

record for the distance at 66 years old. Other local riders were Rob Barnard of Team Cystic Fibrosis who finished in 58m 08s (56th), Phil Tyas of Barnsley RC who finished in 56m 30s

(44th) and club mate Paul Ruta who finished in 1h 05m 17s (90th). Due to the restrictions on maximum gatherings of six people the club have currently suspended their Sunday club rides. These

will resume when government guidelines allow. More details on all the above can be found at http://w w w.birdwel lw h e e l e r s c yc l i ngc lu b. co.uk

New skipper Jones asks players to enjoy playing NEW Stocksbridge rugby captain Joe Jones has called for the players to get back to enjoying their rugby as the pre season training intensifies. With the fixtures due to begin in early October, Jones has issued a call to arms to the whole squad. “We have started training with good numbers and an excellent attitude,’ he said, “But we must keep this up and get back to enjoying each others’ company along with our rugby,” the veteran flyer added.

Former players are welcome to training at Coal Pit Lane every Wednesday from 6.30pm onwards and Stocksbridge have also added some new blood to their ranks, with speedy utility back Ryan Sweeney joining the club. Originally from Bradford, the rangy teenager is comfortable in the 13 or 15 shirt and has shown up well during the early training sessions. The Holmfirthbased lumberjack has been pleased with the welcome provided from everyone at the club.

He said: “It’s been great, I’ve been impressed with the level of coaching and the standards expected. The boys have been good to me and made me feel part of the team already.” Centre Dan Burt has also been training with the club with a view to switching from Rugby League and Stocksbridge are also hopeful of securing the services of former Papua New Guinea Rugby League international and Sheffield Eagles legend Menzie Yere for a period of time.

Firsts washed out as Hargreaves bowls seconds to victory Stocksbridge first XI Sheffield Collegiate fifth XI Match cancelled due to rain Sheffield Transport second XI 89 all out (33.3 overs) Paul Hargreaves 5-20 Stocksbridge second XI 90-5 (24.3 overs) Jack Reeves 31*, Dave Smith 25 WITH Stocksbridge Cricket Club’s first team having their game against Collegiate rained off, the second string travelled to Sheffield Transport looking to return to winning ways after two defeats. Captain Chris Thwaites won a very important toss and chose to bowl on an interesting and lively looking wicket. Stocksbridge made a good start, with opening bowlers Thwaites and Brearley bowling really well and producing a number of chances. Both bowlers found the edge on multiple occasions, with a couple of dropped catches giving the Transport openers a number of lifelines. Captain Thwaites then made a double bowling change, with Paul Hargreaves and Jack Murfin coming into the attack. Both bowlers made immediate impacts, with Hargreaves removing both Transport openers and Murfin quickly removing their number three batsman. Hargreaves continued his brilliant spell, taking the wickets of Transport’s number four and five batsmen both without scoring. Stocksbridge’s excellent bowling and a run out from Thwaites had taken Transport from 56 for one to 62 for 6. Stocksbridge now sat in a really strong position and following a second wicket for Murfin, Transport had collapsed to 77 for seven.

Paul Hargreaves claimed a welldeserved five-wicket haul in his final over, removing the Transport number eight to finish with outstanding figures of 10 overs and five wickets for 20 runs. Thwaites brought himself and fellow opener Brearley back into the attack to try and claim the final two wickets and wrap up the Transport innings. Thwaites immediately brought another chance, with another catch dropped in the slip cordon. Thwaites did finally get the wicket he deserved with Dinesh Ram knicking off behind to the safe hands of Dave Smith. The innings was wrapped up by young Rowan Brearley, who clean bowled the Transport number six batsmen with an excellent leg stump yorker. Stocksbridge’s bowling and fielding effort was superb and a huge improvement from the previous week’s defeat against Richmond. All four of Stocksbridge’s bowlers bowled fantastically well, with a special mention to star man Paul Hargreaves on his second fivewicket haul for the club. Stocksbridge required just 90 runs to record a maximum 25 points victory and propel themselves back into table topping contention. However, their innings took the worst possible start, with Chris Ogley and James Hague both being dismissed in Paul Hargreaves (right) the match winner just the first over of play. Dave Smith came to the crease after just five balls and looked to steady the ship with opener Elliott Freeman. The pair put on a 25-run partnership before Freeman was dismissed for just four. This brought Jack Reeves to the crease with Stocksbridge sitting at 27 for 3 after 11 overs. Smith and Reeves looked comfortable in the middle together, scoring freely and accumulating runs at will. This was until Dave Smith

was given out to a highly debatable LBW decision and unfortunately, he had to depart for a well-made 25. Jack Murfin came to the middle and hit a couple of lusty blows but also fell cheaply for just 8. Stocksbridge were now 66 for 5, requiring just 24 runs to win, with perhaps a few nerves sneaking in. In form youngster Jack Firth came to the middle to join Reeves, who was batting really well and looked to

be seeing it home for Stocksbridge. Firth and Reeves showed no signs of nerves whatsoever and cruised Stocksbridge home to victory with an excellent 24 run partnership, with Jack Reeves fittingly hitting the winning runs and finishing with an excellent 31 not out.

Next weekend the first host De La Salle at Bracken Moor looking for revenge after a disappointing defeat in the reverse fixture. The second XI travel to Coal Aston next weekend, looking to build on this weekends excellent performance.

An excellent response to two disappointing defeats and if Stocksbridge win their game in hand they will now be just one point off top of the table.

Fixtures go ahead as Thorncliffe Cricket Club enters administration SPORTING fixtures will be going ahead as planned at Thorncliffe Cricket and Social Club in Chapeltown after the organisation went into administration in its 150th anniversary year.
