Exciting times for Stocksbridge Cricket Club DESPITE the uncertain times that have faced society of late, Stocksbridge Cricket Club are looking to the future after submitting a planning application to Sheffield City Council to outline building works and renovations to their club house. The cricket club were awarded £21.5k as part of CIL participatory budget scheme and with further funds they have raised are looking to bring the club room facilities more up to date. It has been a testing time for the club with funding streams they were aiming to utilise no longer available due to the global pandemic, which has meant plans being altered and unfortunately scaled down as a result. None the less, the club have worked hard to formulate a suitable plan to

deliver a pavilion that will be welcoming for all. The works will create a larger kitchen area and club room, by extending at the front and rear and knocking through in to the current away changing room. A ramp will be created to access a raised patio area allowing the building to be fully accessible for all. Access to an accessible toilet will also be created from within the club room. Club Chairman Anthony Siddall said: “We are extremely excited to be in a position where we are now applying for planning permission to develop the club house. We again would like to thank Stocksbridge Town Council and all those who attended the participatory budget vote and those who voted for our club to receive funding. “We were extremely humbled by the result and the

award of the funds. It truly means a huge amount to the club and its future. The current facilities are not fit for purpose, uninviting and have held the club back. “Although it has been disappointing that we could not access further funding, it is completely understandable in the current climate and we have had to alter our plans accordingly. “We have worked closely with the Town Council and have now instructed local architect Tom Faulkner along with local builder Paul Needham to undertake the planning and works. We have a ground which we are proud of and a remodelled updated pavilion will make it accessible and welcoming.

BOLSTERSTONE MAN TAKES TO SKIES FOR VJ DAY

JOHNNIE Johnson of Bolsterstone commemorated the 75th anniversary of VJ Day on August 15 by taking control of an active WW2 Spitfire and performing two victory barrel rolls over the skies of Leicestershire. Johnnie said: “It was something I had planned for a long time to bring back memories of the gallant and brave airmen who flew in the Battle of Britain and throughout the war. “Whilst flying, I got the feeling of how they must have felt flying solo whilst facing enemy aircraft. “It was a truly awesome experience, being in the cockpit of such an iconic aircraft as the Spitfire.” His daughter, Helen, a former pupil of Bolsterstone and Stocksbridge schools, is also a pilot of private jets but says she prefers larger aircraft as they are somewhat more comfortable. Johnnie added: “It was a most amazing experience, one that I will always remember.” The flight was followed by lunch attended by family and friends who all agreed it was a most enjoyable and memorable day.

MODULAR HOMES INSTALLED FOUR new contemporary homes were lifted into position this week, setting the scene for what could be the beginning of a series of modular homes available for affordable rent across the city. The modular homes have been precision engineered in a quality controlled factory environment in Yorkshire using a light gauge steel frame. They will look and feel like a traditionally built house, with a brick exterior and a pitched roof. Of excellent quality and built to the same high standard as our traditionally built new council homes, they will also offer excellent environmental performance. Provided as part of the council’s ambitious Stock Increase Programme, targeted at delivering 3,100 additional new council homes by 2029, this smallscale scheme will test what’s called ‘Modern Methods of Construction’ (MMC) and the council will be assessing how these new homes fare. Each home is a fourbedroomed family house built on Knutton Crescent at Parson Cross, an area where there is an identified need for this type of affordable home. Using MMC brings advantages in terms of speed of delivery,

quality assurance and energy efficiency, as well as less construction activity and disruption in the local area compared to a traditional building site. Councillor Paul Wood, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety at Sheffield City Council said: “Our aim is to build more quality, warm and affordable homes where they are most needed across the city. I think they look rather impressive and it’s interesting to see how the homes come together as they are lifted on to site and installed with speed and precision. We look forward to asking people what they think of how they look and importantly what it feels like living in a house like this, when families take residence. “Of course, we’ll be fully assessing the benefits and opportunities that homes like this could bring to the city to see if more of them should be built. As our first step in to MMC for new council homes we have intentionally started small. We hope that building homes in this way in the future on a larger scale will help deliver wider benefits including cost reductions. We’ll be learning from this project, assessing what these homes are like to

manage and maintain and how we would do things differently if there are further phases. It’s pretty exciting being a city that welcomes innovation, whilst offering affordable and efficient living, to those who most need a council home.” Amanda Grimbleby, Partnerships and Business Development Director at M-AR Off Site (https://m-ar.co.uk/) said: “We are extremely proud to be working in partnership with Sheffield City Council to deliver their first MMC affordable homes in the City. The homes at Knutton Crescent are built to high quality standards and are extremely air-tight, significantly reducing heat loss and reducing fuel bills for families.

the real success here is not just the homes we have delivered in a short timescale, but the fact we have been able to progress the construction of the homes in our factory during the COVID19 pandemic. What we have achieved here is a credit not only to the M-AR team but also to Sheffield City Council who we have worked closely with throughout the project. It takes a team effort to do this, so thank you to all for your proactive ap“It has been a pleasure proach in making this to be involved in this happen for the city of project, and for me Sheffield.” “Working with the Sheffield City Council team has been absolutely great, they are not only a collaborative authority but they are also very forward thinking and could lead the way housing delivery is approached in the future, ensuring that much needed affordable homes are provided quicker, to high quality standards which are more efficient, greener and sustainable for generations to come.

HELP A CHILD THIS CHRISTMAS WESTWOOD 2015, a small volunteer led charity based in Sheffield, established in 2015 and becoming operational in 2018 with a focus on preventing people from becoming socially isolated. They do this by running community engagement activities that bring people together to meet, socialise, and undertake an activity together. They have launched a new appeal, called Toys From Us,

to support children in need this Christmas.

Westwood want to be able to deliver 100 toys to families in need in our locality so that their children have a present to open on Christmas morning. The funding total is £1,000 – all of the funds donated will go in total to this appeal – nothing is to be used for administration or other programmes at Westwood.

A spokesperson said: “Children are our future; the current health emergency will be with us for a while longer; our aim in running this initiative is to bring some happiness and kindness into the life of isolated families so that they can experience a taste of normality this Christmas time.” You can donate at https:// www.crowdfunder.co.uk/ toys-from-us

CCTV appeal after bike stolen

Issue 1129

Call 0114 283 1100

After a post on Facebook by Ecclesfield Parish Council stated that the device was safe to access, Chapeltown councillor Paul Brunt has attempted to highlight the dangers presented to anyone trying to access the life-saving equipment which is attached to the building which is structurally compromised after it was hit by a car.

At around 10.30am on Saturday August 1, it is reported

than an unknown offender broke into a property on Langsett Road, stealing a push bike from the back yard as he left. Enquiries are continuing, and officers have now released an image of a man they think may have vital information.

Do you recognise the man in the picture? Have you got any information about the incident? If you can help, please contact 101 quoting crime reference number 14/115089/20 or email sheffieldnorthwestnhp@southyorks.pnn.police. uk

Ambulance service back councillor’s claim over unsafe defib YORKSHIRE Ambulance Service has warned against using the defibrillator on the damaged toilet building in Chapeltown, as reported in last week’s Look Local.

NEIGHBOURHOOD officers investigating the theft of a bike from a property in Sheffield have released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident.

3rd September 2020

After writing to the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Cllr Brunt has received a reply stating that the defibrillator is to be moved. The response read: “Ecclesfield Parish Council/guardian of the CPAD advised us of the incident but also advised that the defibrillator cabinet was easily accessible so we agreed we would leave the CPAD available should it be required. “We never “agreed to “Sheffield Ambulance Service has confirmed that having the

fence around the toilets is not a safety issue and in emergency the public can access the equipment, and only went with the advice given to us by the guardian. “It is checked weekly by their guardian and on each occasion they clarified to us although there is fencing around after the incident, the cabinet is easily accessible. “After watching the video you have kindly provided, I agree with you, this is not accessible and isn’t safe to send anyone to should it be needed. “I have since spoken to the guardian and have advised them I am not happy with the access and am taking it off our system and will not be available for activation should there be an incident requiring a defibrillator within 600 metres of the cabinet. “He did advise that he has spoken to Sheffield City Council about relocating the cabinet to the building next door and will advise when this has been moved.

LOCAL CARE HOME GIVES GREEN THUMBS UP TO STUDENTS FROM SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY COMMUNITY PROGRAMME

A LOCAL care home has received a helping hand in their gardens from Sheffield students thanks to a community scheme run by Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.

As part of the ‘Keep Doing Good’ programme the football club runs in partnership with the National Citizen Service, several local students have taken part in a week-long garden project for Anchor’s Herries Lodge care home on Teynham Road in Sheffield. From Monday August 24 to Thursday August 28 13 students, aged between 15 and 17 organised and created a series of flowerbeds along the path to the entrance of Herries Lodge, planting flowers such as tulips and daffodils that will provide future blooms that all visitors, residents and staff at Herries Lodge can enjoy. In addition to the flowerbeds, the students also identified areas of the garden they could help to maintain to provide a nice aesthetic to the property. Although the residents did not get the chance to meet the students working in their garden due to the current restrictions, their generosity and dedication to the local community was welcomed and many residents have said how much they look forward to enjoying their newly refreshed garden! James Rowlett, 87, a resident of Herries Lodge and a gardening enthusiast, said: “What they’ve done to the garden is absolutely lovely! It looks so nice and the flowers will be amazing I’m sure. “Thank you so much to all the students for being so nice to us and to Sheffield Wednesday as well!”

SHEFFIELD MUM’S BOREDOM BAGS IDEA GIVES FAMILIES A CREATIVE BOOST OVER THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Sarah Burley, Manager of Anchor’s Herries Lodge, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have such a lovely group help us out like this! The work they’ve been doing in the garden has been fantastic and these projects just put a smile on my face and the faces of everyone at Herries Lodge. “It just shows how great it is when people come together to do their bit for one another. I’d like to thank the students and Sheffield Wednesday for thinking of us and organising such a wonderful project even during such difficult times!” Juliet Orton, 16, who helped organise the project, said: “It’s been great working in the gardens at Herries Lodge! We all wanted to just do our bit to help out and give back to our community. “It’s been quite a tricky summer but finishing it off with a project like this has been fun, I just hope our flowers make everyone here happy!” Ann-Marie Morgan, who is overseeing the “keep doing good” programme for Sheffield Wednesday, said: “Sheffield Wednesday and the National Citizen Service supports young people to expand their social circles and explore their communities outside of their day to day norms, Keep Doing Good this year, has given the young people the chance to break down barriers between generations and provide a small space for the residents to enjoy the fresh air in their own safe haven during this difficult time. “This team of thirteen students joins thousands across the nation pledging a small number of hours aiming for 1 million hours of volunteering to support local communities in their hours of need, Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme is proud of each and every one of them and their contributions.”

THOUGH lockdown restricted life for Ellie McPhail, as it did for most of us, it also provided her with an idea that she has translated in an exciting opportunity. Realising that many parents would be in the same situation she herself faced – children of different ages and interests not in school and constantly in need of entertainment – she devised the idea of Boredom Bags.

“I know only too well how hard and how time-consuming it can be to keep children occupied and happy, especially in the long summer holiday,” Ellie explains, “and that’s without the pressures of a pandemic. But cancelled holidays, parents working from home, children not being able to socialise with their friends in quite the same way just add more pressure

Teacher and mother-of-three Lindsay Bugden heard about Boredom Bags and bought into the scheme. “I have a seven-year-old boy, a five-year-old girl and a toddler,” she says. My lot have loved getting involved with their Boredom Bags. The bags have really gripped both younger and older age groups and have given us plenty of fun options that we have done from home and on holiday.”

The bags contain specially designed art and craft activities with resources included, challenges and competitions led by local artists/ businesses, subtle mindfulness activities to help children process lockdown frustrations, cool non-schooly science hacks, game ideas, simple and tasty recipes, silly fixes, and weekly links to impressive skill-inspiring YouTube channels.

“I therefore set my mind to the task of devising a series of Boredom Bags to span the sixweek break. Each bag gives children a week’s worth of ideas and activities that will help them keep boredom at bay, and provide a lot of laughter and memories for the whole family. I wanted to create something that children would enjoy and would also help enable some much needed me-time for parents too.”

Ellie went on to say, “We are now getting to the end of the summer edition, and it’s been really wonderful to see and hear how the bags have made a really positive impact, not only on children and parents but also the wider community. For this reason alone, I hope to keep the idea going.”

Sheffield river maintenance works to reduce flood risk

NOTICE FOR PATIENTS OF GRENOSIDE SURGERY AND WADSLEY BRIDGE MC

FLU CLINICS 2020

THE Environment Agency will be starting work in the river channel in Sheffield this month (September) to help reduce the risk of flooding in the city. These works will take place in the River Loxley at Malin Bridge and Hillsborough, and on the River Don at Norfolk Bridge. During high river flows it is important to ensure that bridges and the nearby channel don’t restrict the flow of water. To ensure this, gravel, brick and stone deposits will be reduced from areas where it has built up underneath bridge arches and in the adjacent river. Overhanging vegetation and trees around bridges will also be

removed to ensure the flow of water in the river is not restricted and debris is less likely to get caught. This project is part of the £32 million programme of recovery works across Yorkshire to repair defences damaged by the flood event last February. Since November officers have inspected over 3,000 flood defence assets along the Rivers Don, Rother and Aire, carried out urgent repairs, and continued work to improve flood defences. To plan these works, the project team has worked with flood risk, geomorphology and fisheries specialists from the Environment Agency to minimise the impact the reduction of the deposits

may have on fish and wildlife in the area. Carrying out the work in September also avoids fish spawning periods and the bird nesting season. Lianne Grogan, Sheffield catchment advisor for the Environment Agency, said: “These works are important as part of our river maintenance programme to help reduce the risk of flooding. We’ve worked closely with teams to consider flood risk, fish and wildlife, and this approach ensures the works balance the need to improve the flow of water through the river during a flood, whilst also retaining channel gravels for aquatic species and vegetation cover for fish.

“We can’t entirely prevent flooding from rivers and streams, but we can reduce the likelihood of flooding by ensuring that rivers, becks and streams are free from excess debris and vegetation that might block the watercourse so that in high rain events water remains in the channel.” Works are planned to start from September 7 and expected to take around a week at each location depending on weather conditions. The Environment Agency has employed contractors AmcoGiffen to carry out the work. For any enquiries about the work email: SYPSO@environmentagency.gov.uk

Thousands of groups and charities across Yorkshire which support younger people will be able to apply for funding provided by the Bags of Help scheme throughout October, November and December. Potential organisations who can apply include those supporting mental health, outdoor activities, educational activities, young carers, bereavement counselling, child poverty and vulnerable at-risk children.

Since COVID19, the Bags of Help COVID19 Communities Fund has given £4m of support to more than 8,000 charities and groups across the regions affected by the pandemic, each receiving £500 grants for food, resources, and emergency aid. The Bags of Help programme, which is run in partnership with community charity Groundwork, has already provided £83m of funding to more than 34,000 community projects across the UK. One group to benefit from a Bags of Help grant in the North is The Golddigger Trust, which works with tens of thousands of peo-

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Your Letters Douglas Scholey Dear Editor. I was saddened to read in your latest issue of the passing of Doug Scholey and wanted to pay my condolences to his family. Mr Scholey was very helpful and supportive to me in the late 1980s at his garage and car showrooms in Deepcar where he supplied me with a great deal of decorating work at that time. I just wanted to express how grateful I was to him and admired how he had built up his car repairs and sales business from such humble beginnings in Stocksbridge and Deepcar.

DynaMo on tour to mark start of the Tour de France? TO mark the start of the rearranged Tour de France on August 29, South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) has unveiled its new pedal power super bike that generates electricity through exercise! First to ride the latest vehicle in the Safer Roads’ fleet was their very own super hero, Captain Dynamo. His mission is to protect the vulnerable and avert tragedy by encouraging safe and responsible use of the roads. His important safety message is aimed at drivers in a bid to help keep cyclists safer when riding their bike on the road. The “safe pass” message board encourages drivers to leave plenty of room between them and a cyclist when passing – as a guide, drivers should leave a minimum distance of 1.5m between them and a cyclist, when travelling at speeds under 30mph. Captain DynaMo has kicked off his tour of South Yorkshire and over the next week,

he’ll be asking you to spot which locations he has visited. “We recall the Tour de France Grand Depart in Yorkshire in 2014, and with that in mind we are travelling to some iconic locations across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. I hope to visit as many of them as possible with my green cape and fast feet,” said the Captain. “And when Covid-19 restrictions allow it, I’ll be challenging the people of South Yorkshire to take the DynaMo challenge and have a go on my super bike that generates electricity through exercise.” Joanne Wehrle, manager of the Safer Roads Partnership said, “We wanted to bring cycle safety messages to all road users across South Yorkshire in a unique and eye-catching way. “But there is a serious side to this. Many more people are choosing to cycle either for exercise or to get to work or

school. It’s great that people are taking to two wheels and this will have benefits for people’s health as well as the environment. But it’s vital that we protect the safety of cyclists. Drivers can help by slowing down and giving cyclists room when they pass. “It is important that we all respect each other on the roads and share them responsibly.” Visit the SYSRP website for a wide range of information about topics including safe pass, riding defensively and the right kit to wear, with signposting from our social media channels. Follow #DynaMo on facebook and Twitter all week and see if you can recognise where he’s been on tour. To find out more about the project visit: sysrp.co.uk/dynamochallenge

CHURCH DEFEATED Another record tumbles IN FINAL FRIENDLY PENISTONE Church slipped to defeat in their final pre-season friendly on Friday as they lost 2-0 to Brighouse Town. After the first half was played to a stalemate, goals from Joe Jagger and Jack Boyle condemned Church to defeat in front of a crowd of 109. Manager Ian Richards said: “Obviously it’s disappointing to lose our final pre-season game before the competitive stuff starts with the FA Cup. “Pre-season is very much about the process and the performance and tonight was another opportunity for other players and the more players to get further minutes in their legs and continue to work on good habits, match sharpness, get used to the shape, structure of the team and a number of lads had the chance to get ninety minutes into their legs, that was really pleasing.”

Church manager Ian Richards

Saturday August 29 saw players compete for the Scott Eustace Trophy in the 5th round of the club Championship with the early starters enjoying the best of the weather conditions. Peter Finney (05), playing alongside brother Andrew, was keen not to let An-

drew take all the publicity and won the competition with 39 points. Craig Brailsford (16) was second with 38 points and Mick Shouler (13) moved up one place from the previous week to take third place also with 38 points, losing out to Craig on the back nine.

“Overall I’m really pleased with pre-season, it’s been longer than

normal but the lads have been absolutely first class, there’s been real positivity, a positive atmosphere, real togetherness, real hard work, brilliant attitudes, they’ve been at it 100% and I can’t fault them. “We now just have to apply that on Tuesday in The FA Cup at Skelmersdale, we have to make sure that all that hard work pays off, still believe in what we do and still play to our system. ”Yes you want to finish your final pre-season game with a win but there’s a lot of positives to take from tonight and we have to make sure we take that forward into Tuesday, it’s not about pre-season fitness, it’s about winning a football match.” Church face Skelmersdale away from home in the preliminary round of the FA Cup on Tuesday night.

BIRDWELL Wheeler Trevor Mayne travelled to his home county of Suffolk to ride in the VC Baracchi 50 mile time trial on the A143 near Lowestoft. On a dry but blustery day which was not conducive to fast times Mayne clocked 2h 03m 45s which is a new club record for 56 years old. Due to the restrictions on maximum gatherings of six people, the club have currently suspended their Sunday club rides. These will resume when government guidelines allow. Stocksbridge cricket lose battle to rain again as seconds complete excellent run chase

Ant Siddall unbeaten 56

De La Salle first XI 46-4 (15 overs) Andy Hibbert 2-17, Joe Hibbert 2-17 Stocksbridge first XI Match Abandoned due to rain WITH a vast amount of rain throughout the week building up to Saturday, this weekends contest between Stocksbridge and De La Salle at Bracken Moor always looked in doubt. In typical style, lots of hard work early on Saturday morning from the Groundsman and various members of the first XI got the ground in a playable condition to start the fixture on time and leave the fate of the game in the hands of the weather gods. Captain Andy Hibbert won what seemed at the time a very important toss, and Hibbert asked the visitors De La Salle to bat first. From the off Stocksbridge looked in the driving seat, the ever familiar Father-Son opening pair both struck early and De La Salle looked in trouble. Joe Hibbert was first to the party removing both openers leaving De La Salle 8-2. Not wanting to be outdone, Andy Hibbert then helped himself to the next two wickets, including an excellent caught and bowled. Unfortunately for Stocksbridge, with De La Salle 46-4, the rain came and that would be all of the cricket played at Bracken Moor meaning the match was abandoned and the points were shared. Coal Aston third XI 145 all out (38.2 overs) Chris Thwaites 4-14, Jack Firth 2-12, Rowan Brearley 2-12 Stocksbridge second XI 147-7 (36.5 overs) Ant Siddall 56*

Stocksbridge travelled to Coal Aston this weekend looking to follow up last week’s excellent victory over Sheffield Transport. Captain Chris Thwaites won another important toss and again chose to field and put his faith in his bowling attack. Stocksbridge made a good start, with opening bowlers Thwaites and Brearley bowling really well and restricting Coal Aston to just 21 for two after 12 overs. Brearley continued his good form by claiming both of the first two wickets. Thwaites’ opening spell of six overs went for just eight runs and Brearley’s opening seven overs returned figures of two for 12. Jack Murfin came into the attack to replace Thwaites and removed the Coal Aston number four batsman for just four. Coal Aston were now tottering at just 33 for three. This wicket brought Andrew Liptrot to the crease to join Coal Aston anchor Grant Woolley. The pair put on an excellent quickfire 97 run partnership, with Murfin and Jack Reeves being hit for a few lusty blows. Liptrot brought up his 50 in very quick time after dispatching Reeves for 25 in one over, including three sixes. Fortunately for Stocksbridge, the heavens opened following this over, providing a well-timed rain delay. Following an early tea, Thwaites made a double bowling change, with youngster Jack Firth replacing Paul Hargreaves and Thwaites himself replacing Reeves. Hargreaves bowled well again, however unfortunately couldn’t follow up his stellar performance from last week.

Jack Firth started well with the ball, and his first over brought the key wicket, albeit in bizarre fashion. With star man Liptrot on strike, Woolley called for a peculiar single, with Liptrot only halfway down the wicket, Rowan Brearley uprooted middle stump with a superb throw from fine leg. A furious Liptrot had to depart for a superb innings of 68 off just 47 balls. Coal Aston now sat at 130 for 4 with 8 overs remaining, looking to propel their score past 170. Thwaites’ first over back into the attack was a maiden, building some pressure on Coal Aston late on. This pressure was telling, as Jack Firth removed stalwart opener Woolley for 30, following a good catch by Jack Reeves. Thwaites then ripped his way through the Coal Aston middle order with three wickets in four balls. Wright and Bingley were both clean bowled middle stump, before Will Ross was trapped LBW. Thwaites’ over turned the game on its head, with Coal Aston going from 130 for five to 133 for eight in the space of one over. Jack Firth gained his second wicket, dismissing Laidler for just three, following a simple catch for Thwaites. Captain Thwaites wrapped up the innings bowling Watson for just two. Another excellent effort by Stocksbridge in the field, fighting back to bowl Coal Aston out for 145 after they previously sat at 130 for three. Captain Thwaites was the star with the ball, finishing with figures of 9.2 overs 4 for 14. Special mention to youngsters Jack Firth and Rowan Brearley who returned with combined figures of 11 overs four for 24. Stocksbridge’s reply again got off to a fragmented start, with Freeman falling in just the third over.

Reeves and Ogley were now together in the middle and looking very comfortable. Runs flowed freely, with Stocksbridge on 42 for one after just nine overs. Unfortunately, Reeves had to depart after a yorker unluckily ricocheted off his foot onto the stumps, leaving Stocksbridge now 45 for two. Chris Ogley fell just five balls later and nerves began to settle in again with Stocksbridge still requiring another 100 runs to win. Jon Pickford and Ant Siddall were now in the middle and both looked in excellent touch. The pair formed a 31 run partnership before Pickford was bowled by youngster Laidler. Jack Murfin came and went without troubling the scorers, and Stocky were now teetering at 79 for five. Siddall looked in imperious form, with Stocksbridge just needing somebody to stick around with him. Youngster Jack Firth loves a run chase, however he fell for a well-made 12 this time around. Siddall kept the scoreboard ticking over and when experienced campaigner Malcom Perry was adjudged LBW, Stocksbridge needed just 11 runs to win. Thwaites joined Siddall in the middle and the pair crept Stocksbridge towards the finish line before Siddall deservedly hit the winning runs to finish on an excellent 56 not out. Another fantastic maximum 25 point victory for the Green Army, who are now within touching distance of top spot, with a game in hand. Next week sees the first XI travel to table toppers Parkhead and the second XI return home to Bracken Moor next week, with Hallam making the trip north.

GREEN LIGHT FOR CROWDS TO RETURN TO NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL

AFTER several weeks of uncertainty and speculation regarding supporters being allowed into games and start dates for the new season, the FA has finally announced that from the end of August fans can be allowed back into watch football at non-league level.

This means that local sides Stocksbridge Park Steels and Penistone Church will be allowed spectators for the start of the new season. Certain restrictions have to be implemented within the ground and Stocksbridge Park Steels have put a lot of work in behind the scenes to

make the newly named Eco-power Environment Stadium as safe from coronavirus as possible. Steels’ first game under the new restrictions will be on Saturday September 5 when they face Ramsbottom United FC with a 3pm kick off.

This will be the last pre-season friendly before the Steels face Stalybridge Celtic on September 12 at home in the FA Cup preliminary round.

and track and trace details will be collected. All other measures will be in place. Steels season tickets will be on sale at these games at £90 for adults and £60 for concessions.

Admission for the Ramsbottom game is £5 no concessions. Turnstiles will be open from 1.45 pm

HOLDER ONE FOR THE FUTURE SHEFFIELD Tigers speedway boss Simon Stead is backing Jack Holder to become a Grand Prix rider of the future. Holder, snapped up by the Owlerton side following their promotion to the Premiership, has been enjoying some fine scores in Polish League racing. And Stead is keeping everything crossed the club will be

able to go with the same team, or as close as possible, next season. “Because he joined us, I’ve been keeping a close eye on Jack’s performances and he’s riding very well,” said Stead. “I firmly believe he has a bright future in the sport and I think he can become a Grand Prix rider. “It adds to our frustration in many ways because we are

looking at a rider we should have been seeing regularly around Owlerton on a Thursday night. I hope that can stay in place and it can happen next year. “The build-up to this season was bigger than for many years and we were ready to go before we were all sent into lockdown.”

be any racing at Owlerton this season despite the prospect of crowds returning for the reopening of greyhound racing to the public in October. Club bosses have been looking at the possibility of staging some racing but the cost and logistics involved for a small number, perhaps a one-off, is likely to rule that out.

Meanwhile it seems increasingly unlikely that there will
