Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre re-opening after major revamp
AFTER two years in the planning and a lot of hard work, Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre’s major new extension is now complete and all its COVID measures are in place, ready to welcome everyone back to use its fabulous and improved facilities when it re-opens on Monday September 14. These include a new front entrance with wheelchair ramp access and wheelchair stair lifts, the new Oxley’s cafÊ, new pool showers and toilets, new reception, offices and meeting space. With the other improvements in the changing rooms, it means car park to poolside is now completely accessible for wheelchair users.
Oxley’s cafÊ, operated under contract by the brilliant Argent Catering, will be open to the general public as well as Centre users serving hot and cold food and drinks – including ethically
sourced and sustainable Fairtrade coffee. Andy Clarke, the Trust’s CEO and Centre Manager, told Look Local: “We hope everyone is impressed by the improvements made. The Board would like to thank our main contractor AM Building Services (Yorkshire) Ltd and all the other subcontractors for the first class work they have done in the Centre. We would also like to thank our Architects TP Bennett Ltd and Cost Consultants CBRE Ltd who conducted the official handover last Friday, in time for the Centres re-opening to the public. He went on to say: “The Board would also like to give a huge thank you to our staff and volunteers that have worked so hard on the refurbishments as well as our funders, The National Lottery Community Fund, continued on page 5

BIG IMPROVEMENTS FOR HILLSBOROUGH PARK As well as the facility itself Access Sport will provide equipment such as bikes and helmets, storage facilities for equipment, and regular coaching sessions. Importantly the facility will act as a base for a new community cycling club run by local people. It will also provide the hub for a community outreach programme connecting with local schools and community groups to make sure that all members of society benefit, such as individuals who wouldn’t attend on their own and young people that don’t have access to a bike, can’t ride a bike or aren’t active in any way.
HILLSBOROUGH Park is set for more transformation with an exciting £250,000 all wheeled bike park and a major overhaul of the playground. The bike park project has been developed and funding secured by Sheffield City Council in partnership with Access Sport, Move More and Sheffield Hallam University. Meanwhile, Sheffield Parks and Countryside have announced that the Hillsborough Park playground improvements are now underway. This will be a six-week programme to deliver the first phase of improvements, which will include installing an impressive snake’s head slide, replacing the embankment slide with a
new embankment climbing feature and a new agility trail. Sheffield Parks and Countryside will be working with the Friends of Hillsborough Park to raise funds to complete the second phase of the scheme. The council say that the new bike park, which was granted planning permission last week, will provide a progressive, inclusive and accessible community asset for the park and further contribute to Sheffield’s plans to promote and encourage cycling in the city. The project at Hillsborough Park aims to help energise youth and inclusive cycling in Sheffield through building a brand-new community cycling facility that will be open to all ages and all abilities.
Consultation was undertaken in Autumn 2019 with local stakeholders, users of the park, and the wider community, in order to gauge support for the proposed bike park. This identified an overwhelming level of support from the local community for the bike park concept, with 91% of the 860 respondents supporting the project. Respondents highlighted that the facility would be a positive addition to the park which would provide a unique, inclusive, and accessible facility for all ages to take part in fun, active and healthy leisure activity. Dr Anna Lowe, Programme Manager for the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine, said: “I am absolutely delighted that the All Wheeled Bike Park now has planning permission, it is a great step forward in this ambitious project. “The new bike park will be a fantastic asset for Hillsborough and for Sheffield; it will create new cycling opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get active and will encourage more people to enjoy one of Sheffield’s many beautiful green spaces.”
Since the consultation the council has worked with Access Sport to develop a concept design for the inclusive bike park, designed to appeal to a wide range of bike users, as well as scooters, skateboarders and other wheeled sports. The facility will include a learn to ride area, a beginners section and an advanced section, allowing all ages and abilities to use the facility and develop their confidence and skills. Through the partnership with Access Sport the facility is backed by Sport England and the London Marathon Charitable Trust, and is the first investment the Trust have made in a cycling facility outside of London. Further funding towards the project is being provided by Sheffield City Council’s Parks & Countryside Service public health funded programme of improvements. In total the partnership has secured more than £250,000 towards delivering the bike park, as well as support from British Cycling. Planning permission was granted in August 2020, and over the next few months the facility will be procured and final designs for the bike park completed. It is expected that the bike park will be constructed and fully open to the public by late Spring 2021. The bike track development comes after it was announced in June 2020 that Hillsborough Park is also is set for a new £1m community café and activity centre supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Age UK Sheffield will restore the derelict Grade II Listed Old Coach House building, with work starting in the autumn.

Ready to re-open: Stocksbridge Leisure Centre
Sport England, East Peak Innovation Partnership and Well North whose generous grants have made this possible. “The Centre is now fully Covid ready and has introduced a number of changes in line with guidance issued. These will include operating a policy of wearing face masks inside the centre by everyone in the public areas (limited exceptions apply). Hand sanitising points are displayed throughout the centre and new and improved cleaning regimes include using the latest ‘fogging’ equipment to carry out regular sanitising. Oneway systems will operate wherever possible and there is plenty of signage reminding customers to observe social distancing. “Due to having to operate on reduced numbers and complying with the track and trace system, the Centre will now operate on a pre-booking
only system - this applies for every activity and includes members too. “Places can be booked up to an hour before the session. Prepayment at the point of booking is preferred although payment can be made at the centre if needed, contactless where possible. “A new timetable for both swimming pools with new session times will be operating up to the end of December so please check the Centre’s website. “We are still asking people to arrive ‘swim ready’ to save congestion in the changing rooms, but our new showers are available to use, all we ask if for you to get dressed and leave the changing rooms as quickly as possible after your session to allow for our fogging regime before the next customers booked in to arrive.
and are taking lesson bookings now. We are also taking new memberships at the moment and for the time being prices are held. Other facilities at the centre include the two party rooms which will be available once guidelines advise it is safe to do so. “As part of the refurbishment, a number of the plaques mounted in the old link corridor that recognised donations from the public, could not be removed without damage and had to be covered. “However, a full photographic record was undertaken and all the affected plaques will be relocated, of course elsewhere in the Centre but still alongside family members and friends’ plaques as originally requested.
“We have restructured our lesson programme and have increased capacity for spaces available for new customers
safety first with leading disinfectant
One of the key issues relating to reopening was to ensure the cleaning and sanitising of all areas of the building, which the organisation realised would be a huge challenge due to the sheer size of the area. Additionally the need to identify a highly effective, non-toxic disinfectant which worked quickly and efficiently was paramount. Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre consulted with PPF Solutions Ltd, a local supplier of what is considered to be the most effective disinfectant on the market - PPF Disinfect which has been proven to kill 99.9999% of pathogens and viruses on contact including Covid19. PPF Solutions Ltd also
provide mechanical delivery systems for the disinfectant in the form of fogging and misting machines which ensure maximum coverage in the shortest amount of time.
PPF Disinfect is a Hypochlorous acid disinfectant (HOCI) which is free of potentially harmful additives, is non-toxic, easy to use and completely safe for humans, animals and plant life. It has proven to be 80-100 times more effective than bleach and unlike other disinfectants on the market, works in seconds rather than minutes. Recent featured in the Daily Mail, HOCI’s are used all over the world and have been previously described as ‘the gold standard by which all antiviral, antibacterial agents must now be compared’. It was in early March that HOCl was confirmed as being instrumental in contain-
ing the spread of Covid-19 in South Korea.
As a result of the consultation and a full site review by PPF Solutions Ltd, Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre have purchased two fogging systems and are now using PPF Disinfect throughout the whole facility. Andy Clarke, CEO and centre Manager of Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre said “Whilst we were very keen to reopen the Centre, which is a treasured community asset, we were adamant that we wouldn’t do so, unless we could ensure the safety of our members, volunteers and staff team. By working with PPF Solutions Ltd, we believe that we are using the safest, most effective and efficient system of disinfection available on the market today and that PPF Solutions Ltd have provided us with the best means of ensuring our Centre is Covid19 safe.

Night Strider 2020 - do it your way IT’S usually a night of colour, fun, and fantastic fundraising for St Luke’s Hospice… but the 2020 Night Strider will have a new COVID-safe format for all the family to enjoy. Night Strider is the popular St Luke’s October charity spectacular that sees supporters heading off into the night on either a 10k or walking half marathon challenge. Almost 1,000 people took part in Night Strider 2019, raising more than £115,000 for St Luke’s patients and their families. 2020 would have marked Night Strider’s sixth anniversary but when the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, a new plan had to be developed - and Night Strider has gone virtual!
“Our aim, of course, is to make this a massive success and the key to that is encouraging all your family and friends to give you as much support as possible.
“Our usual Night Strider is not open to under 10s but this year there’s a great chance for the whole family to get involved and create their own fun event,” said St Luke’s Head of Fundraising Joasia Lesniak.
“Raising £65 in sponsorship could contribute to a family who has recently lost a loved one receiving two hours of our specialised bereavement support.
“You choose your own date, your own route, your own level of personal challenge and then you simply get out there and have a great time. “Daytime or evening, it doesn’t matter when you get active so long as you let everybody know that you’re fundraising and need their support. “It doesn’t even have to be a walk - you can swim, hop, hula hoop or do absolutely anything that will keep the Night Strider spirit alive until we can all meet up again.
“And if you were to raise more than £200 you would be helping to pay for a day of tailored therapy sessions for a terminally ill patient, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and spiritual care - all the things that help give our patients the opportunity to have a better quality of life at the end of their life. “Just remember to keep things safe and socially distanced and make sure that everybody has fun!” To find out more about Virtual Night Strider and how to get involved simply visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Duo sentenced for Burncross Road armed robbery TWO Barnsley men have started their prison sentence for armed robbery after pleading guilty to a list of offences at Sheffield Crown Court. Scott Bell, 26, of HMP Doncaster and Steven Gillis, 42, of no fixed abode were both charged with armed robbery following an incident at the Premier Store in Burncross Road in Sheffield last year. Shortly before 4pm on September 10 last year, two men, now identified as Bell and Gillis entered the store and threatened the owner with screwdrivers
Photographed left to right - Scott Bell and Steven Gillis
The duo made off with cash from the till, two charity
boxes, over a 100 packets of cigarettes and the victim’s wallet. The men fled the scene in a white transit van when they were disturbed by a delivery driver. Detectives investigating the robbery where able identify the clothes worn by the offenders from CCTV and also the registration of the van used in the robbery. The van, which failed to stop for officers on two further occasions and abandoned in the Skegness area on September 11. During a search of the vehicle, cash stolen from the rob-
bery enabled officers to link them to the robbery. Both men were brought into custody and made no comment throughout their interviews. On Tuesday September 1, both men appeared before Sheffield Crown Court and pleaded guilty to offences. Bell pleaded guilty to robbery, burglary and handling stolen goods. He has been sentenced to six years and six months in prison. Gillis pleaded guilty to robbery and handling stolen goods. He was sentenced to five years and three months in prison.
Wellbeing Corner - new monthly column
By Ged Jenkins-Omar, Best Selling Author of ‘Help with Anxiety’ available on Amazon.
Hello! I hope you are having a good week? Since writing my last column I have now released my book as an audiobook on Amazon and iTunes. So, if you are looking for any tips around managing anxiety, panic or worry then please do check it out. The audiobook is particularly good for those of you who are not keen on reading or struggle to find the time to read. This week begins the start of my monthly column which will once again be focussed on all things mental health and wellbeing. I thought
I would kickstart it by looking at a couple of natural remedies that are reported to have positive benefits for our wellbeing and are easily accessed online or in the shops. Firstly, Cannabidiol, or CBD as it is better known, has appeared everywhere in recent years and with good reason. Scientific studies and regular users have suggested that using it can assist in managing the different symptoms of anxiety and other mental health problems. It’s thought that this is because CBD interacts with receptors found in the nervous system, specifically the CB1 and CB2 receptors and this
is said to have a beneficial effect for many ailments.
CBD can be bought in a variety of forms including flowers or buds, oils, capsules, skin products and more and can be found in health stores and online. Another remedy that studies have shown can help to relieve anxiety and stress is Lavender. A beautiful smelling purple flower, Lavender is proposed to have a calming effect on the body, positively interacting with the brain and nervous system to settle feelings of anxiety and nervousness.
The most popular way to reap the benefits of Lavender is by using it as an oil. You can try adding Lavender oils to your bath in the evening or by using it as an essential oil in a diffuser and inhaling its relaxing aromas.
Alternatively, you can also try placing Lavender petals under your pillow before you go to bed at night. If you would like to use it in the day you could rub your phone, phone case, or watch strap with Lavender oil every morning, smelling it when you start to feel anxious. Other natural remedies reported to have beneficial effects for our wellbeing
include Chamomile, Rose Oil, Valerian, Eucalyptus and more. If you would like to look at some natural remedies to help improve your wellbeing then do your research, find out what suits you and then give them a try. I hope you have a stress-free month and remember to keep talking about how you are feeling to those around you. Please note: This article is for educational purposes only and should not replace proper medical advice. If you are experiencing anxiety or any other mental health illness then please speak to your doctor.

CUP HEARTBREAK FOR CHURCH AS WAR MEMORIAL EARN POINT A STUNNING comeback from Skelmersdale saw Penistone Church knocked out of their Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie on Tuesday, losing 3-2. Church had taken control of the game with a first half brace from Cameron Simpson putting them 2-0 up at the break. Emini Adegbenro pulled one back for Skelmersdale straight from the restart and 10 minutes later, he levelled the scores from the spot. With just six minutes of normal time remaining, Joe HerCameron Simpson

In the season opener and in front of a large crowd, Civil Service got off to a perfect start with Jordan Turner scoring from the penalty spot when Oughtibridge debutant Jamie Hadfield was judged to have fouled. The visitors then went close when first Callum Simms and then the impressive 19- year-old Charlie Cope went close.
But the equaliser deservedly came with Joe Long managing to get the final touch. War Memorial had two great chances at the death but failed to capitalise and left Dave Hudson’s men with a well earned point.

TOUR DE STOCKSBRIDGE 2020
Local Sport ERNEST THORPE Start of the ride up Pea Royd Lane
A SMALL group of local cyclists have put on their Stocksbridge Cycling Club jerseys, along with a few guest riders, and completed a socially-distanced, anticlockwise ride of the Tour de Stocksbridge route as a reminder of when the Tour de France visited this region in 2014. A delayed Tour de France 2020 is currently underway on the continent at the moment. Two riders from Dinnington CC rode over to join the local riders who met outside Stocksbridge Town Hall and then set off in two small, separate groups. The route is 25 miles and takes in all the significant hills in the area ascending over 1,000m in total.
The route starts off up Pea Royd Lane and This group of riders, who are the remains of along the ridge before dropping down Gilbert Stocksbridge CC, do regular Sunday rides and occasional Tuesday and Thursday evening Hill to Langsett. rides that meet current covid 19 restrictions. STEELS LIVE ON BBC
MILLIONS of people will have the chance to watch Stocksbridge Park Steels take on Stalybridge Celtic on Saturday with the broadcasting giants choosing to air the fixture live.
After the premature end to last season, Stocksbridge Park Steels finally get back to playing on Saturday September 12 with Stalybridge Celtic visiting for the preliminary round of the FA Cup. The game will be a fitting opener for the newly-named Eco-Power Stadium following Steels new sponsorship agreement with Eco-power Environmental. It will be shown live on their red button channel with a 12.30pm kick off. Stalybridge Celtic FC play in the Premier Division of the Northern Premier League and will provide a stiff test. However, Steels beat them in their good FA Trophy run a few seasons ago and will be hoping to cause another upset. Steels can go into the game with a confidence following a good
pre season which saw them win four and draw two of their six friendly fixtures.
Most of last season’s squad have retained but with a few new additions, manager Chris Hilton will be hoping they can build on last season’s good form which was unfortunately cut short. Due to coronavirus restrictions and FA rules, attendance on Saturday is limited to 350 supporters and tickets have been selling well. Unfortunately, once that figure has been achieved, supporters will be refused entry. Stocksbridge Park Steels FC have worked hard over the last few weeks to put coronavirus preparations in place to try and ensure the safety of supporters. The club asks that everybody attending takes notice of the instructions around the ground and follows advice of the stewards to ensure all runs smoothly. The club will be under close scrutiny, especially with the TV cameras there, so your cooperation will be paramount.
