CHANNEL SWIMMER RAISES £3,000 JOE Milnes, who swam with Stocksbridge Pentaqua for nine years, has just returned from Dover where he completed a cross channel swim to France in 12 hours and 10 minutes, raising over £3,000 for charity in the process. Ten years ago he took part in a team relay cross channel swim which left him with the ambition to one day complete a solo crossing. In addition to the crew, two friends - Aaron and Jess - accompanied Joe on his challenge.

Joe’s previous challenges have included triathlons, marathons, and the Comrades Marathon in South Africa which is a double marathon run in under 12 hours, a similar time to swimming the channel, but he found the channel swim considerably more demanding both physically and mentally. Joe added: “It is good to know that local children can continue to train at Stocksbridge’s newly refurbished Community Leisure Centre, giving them the opportunity to fulfil their dreams and ambitions.”

Jess acted as his support swimmer joining Joe in the water for two one hour sessions. Aaron kept Joe supplied with regular drinks and nutrition and kept all Joe’s supporters on land updated with his progress via photos and videos on social media. His amazing live video of Joe swimming ashore in France was watched by over 50 people who sent messages of support and encouragement which helped Joe through his final push to the finish. His fantastic effort has raised over £3,000 for CLIC Sargent, a charity which supports children with cancer and their families. Joe paid tribute to his former swimming coach David Wright, head coach at Stocksbridge Pentaqua, saying, “without the foundations built at Stocksbridge Pentaqua all those years ago I wouldn’t have had a chance.”

PENISTONE PARAMOUNT GRAND RE-OPENING FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 18 AFTER a long-enforced closure, the team at The Penistone Paramount are pleased to announce that the cinema will officially re-open to the public on Friday September 18.

mount - including replacing the old seating, fully painting the auditorium, sanding and varnishing the wooden floors, laying new flooring to the Circle area and laying new carpets.

The Penistone Paramount has undergone an extensive renovation, funded by Penistone Town Council, throughout the Covid-19 lockdown.

“This herculean effort has only been made possible by the hard work and patience of our staff, some of whom have been furloughed for a few months and others who have worked hard behind the scenes co-ordinating the works.

It has been given a new lease of life with new seats, new carpets, new house lights and a full internal redecoration. Mayor of Penistone Town Council, Cllr Steve Webber, said: “The Covid-19 crisis has been devastating in its impact on every part of our lives and in every part of the area. Penistone Town Council has been forced, like many businesses, to close down for a period & to take extraordinary measures before re-opening. “The financial implications will take years to make good. However, whilst not making light of the circumstances, the Town Council has made use of the enforced shutdown to carry out a series of planned improvement works to The Paramount cinema rather than affect future trading. “In all, some £100,000 has been spent refurbishing The Para-

“I’d like to express my own and the Town Council’s sincere thanks to them all for their professional attitude and passion to see The Paramount opening again. “We open The Paramount under new rules and guidance, with restricted seating due to social distancing, and with a restructured staffing policy. “We can only offer pre-booked tickets at the moment although the ticketing system will allow people to order their snacks and drinks online at the time of buying tickets. We’re also moving to a cashless system using Paramount Gift Cards to pay for goods. We have had to move away from the use of large amounts of coins, to notes only, to avoid any health and safety issues as well as time-consum-

ing cashing up routines at the end of each performance. “This will be new and perhaps there will be teething problems, however please be patient whilst we get your Paramount cinema back on course. “The Paramount is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Town Council and we hope that the refurbishment will give it a new appeal. We hope people will enjoy coming back to watch films as much as we will enjoy re-opening a local venue that all of us have sorely missed. Thanks for your continued support and we hope to see you in attendance.” The Paramount Cinema Manager, Brian Barnsley, said: “We are delighted to finally reopen the cinema to the public and we look forward to welcoming members of the community old and new.” The Paramount opens with the showing of TENET at 7.30pm with the book office now open for ticket bookings at http:// www.penistoneparamount. co.uk/ or through the Box Office on 01226 767532. Due to social distancing the cinema will be operating at reduced seating capacity, and all tickets are to be pre-ordered with no walk-ups.

school still thriving

I have now been the headteacher of Stocksbridge High School for a year. Over the last six months, Coronavirus has presented many issues in education, but it remains a privilege to lead your secondary school. Despite these challenges, the school currently enjoys our best academic performance, attendance and inclusion records.

tunities in modern foreign languages. As a school, our core aim is to inspire young people to hold high ambitions and prepare them for a rapidly changing world. I would like the whole community to be proud of our school and I believe that this will be achieved by us continuing to forge ever stronger partnerships with the families we serve.

This is achieved by us striving to provide the very best teaching and support for our students. Recently, we have broadened our curriculum offer which includes the much-welcome return of music and wider oppor-

It is normal at this time of year for us to invite all our prospective new students in year 6 and year 5 to an open evening at which you can tour the building, learn how we work and meet young people and staff. Unfortu-

nately, this won’t be possible this year due to the health and safety restrictions placed upon all schools. I am particularly keen to share our recent success and future ambition with everyone so I really hope that you can join us at our online open evening on 28th September. In the meantime, you can follow all the developments of the school and the successes of our students on our website, Twitter feed and Facebook page. As our new strapline says: this is just the start. THE Bus Pass Buskers are mourning the passing away of their leader and founder member, Steve Brearley. Under Steve’s inspirational leadership the group has, over the last 10 years, played in numerous venues including the major Flower Shows at Harrogate, Southport and Chatsworth, as well as pubs, clubs and private functions. Steve was the driving force behind the band’s development, constantly pushing for higher standards and his infectious humour and easy rapport with the audiences made him a very popular front man. He loved people to sing along and the blend of golden oldie skiffle, blues, C&W, ballads and rock and roll music has made the group particularly popular with older generations whilst also raising large amounts for charity.

WILSON John Passed away peacefully at home on 7th September 2020 with his family by his side. Loving Husband to Freda. Beloved Dad of Ian, Jacqlyn, Julie & Keeley. Much loved Grandad to Tracey, Lindsay, Gary and Callum and much loved Great-Grandad and Great-Great-Grandad. Funeral service to take place at Grenoside Crematorium on Monday 21st September at 1.00pm.

Stephen grew up in Glen Howe Park where his father was park keeper, which fostered his lifelong passion for gardening and nature. He had a very successful career in insurance taking him all over the world, before realising his dream of opening his own restaurant, Brearley’s, in Oughtibridge; where he relished the role of ‘mein host’. In retirement he formed the popular band the Bus Pass Buskers, which played over 500 gigs across the North of England raising many thousands of pounds for charity. As front man he used his infectious humour to create a warm rapport with his audiences. Due to his love and knowledge of local carols he was able to lead the Christmas singing at The Plough at Low Bradfield, attracting visitors from miles around. This lead him to start ‘Sankey Sundays’ where congregations met once a month to sing their favourite hymns with great gusto.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Your Letters Sheffield Plan consultation on housing and development opens From September 1 until October 13, there is a six-week consultation on the Options and Issues associated with development of the local plan to construct 40,000 homes from 2023 over a period of 15 years. It is your opportunity to comment on the three options the City Council are proposing for the way forward: • Option A – all development to be in the City and Urban Area, with between 250 and 750 homes in the Green Belt, but only on land previously developed. • Option B – 5,000 homes in the Green Belt with the remainder in the City and Urban Area • Option C – 10,000 homes in the Green Belt with the remainder in the City and Urban Area

We have long campaigned as Liberal Democrats to protect our green fields and green spaces, and through our opposition to the 2015 plan which would have seen large parts of our precious Green Belt given over to housing development, we forced the City Council to think again. The result is three clear choices on the way forward. Only one choice – Option A – ensures that all available brownfield development is fully utilised, with minimal impact on the Green Belt. The Green Belt developments in Options B and C would be “a small number of large Green Belt sites - each would be of sufficient scale to enable a new, sustainable, walkable neighbourhood to be created”. In other words, large scale housing developments of many hundreds of houses covering dozens of acres of Green Belt land, creating townships in the north of the city. We want to encourage everyone to have their say on the proposals, and you will find more information at https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/home/planningdevelopment/emerging-sheffield-plan-draft. The key document is the “Sheffield Plan – Issues and Options” and there are further details on

11

the Housing and Land Availability Assessment, and Green Belt Review which provide more information on how the plans will affect our area. Once this consultation is complete, the findings will be used to inform the first draft of the plan which will go out for consultation in the summer of 2022. Please use this current consultation to send a clear steer to Sheffield City Council as to how you want the plan to be developed. The online survey can be found on https://sheffield. citizenspace.com/place-planning/sheffield-localplan-issues-and-options-2020/

Great British September Clean comes to Sheffield SHEFFIELD City Council is calling on all residents to support a national campaign in a bid to help clean up Sheffield communities. As part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British September Clean, the council will be offering support to those who want to make a difference to litter levels this September, with a focus between the 11th and 27th September, in recognition of a national drive to rid communities of litter. Earlier this year, the council pledged to support the campaign, originally scheduled for Spring 2020, but the impact of Covid 19 meant that many events could not go ahead and so alternative dates this September were confirmed. For the fourth time since the campaign started, the council is encouraging citizens to get involved in litter- picking activities whilst adhering to the current guidelines on social distancing, by picking alone or with small groups of likeminded volunteers.

In previous years, hundreds of people have come out in support of the campaign to help change behaviour when it comes to taking responsibility for the environment, many of whom are involved in litter picking activities all year round.

“In recent months, with more and more people spending time outdoors and enjoying the abundance of green spaces we have here in Sheffield, there has been a notable increase in litter being left by a small minority.

In addition, routine street cleaning is undertaken by Amey on a continuous basis as part of the Streets Ahead highways maintenance contract and over 100,000 requests for street cleaning have been dealt with since 2012.

Cabinet member for Environment, Street Scene and Climate Change at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Mark Jones said:

“In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need to spend money or give up valuable time to clear up after others; yet tackling litter continues to be a huge undertaking for already stretched council services, as well as the volunteers who selflessly dedicate their own time to help clean up our streets and parks.”

Mark Jones continued:

“The Great British September Clean is a fantastic incentive to get people talking about the importance of keeping areas clean and taking action by disposing of litter in the right way. “Litter picking has an immediately positive impact on our neighbourhoods and means we can continue to take pride in the city we all call home. However, in these very different times, we must remember to put safety first and follow the guidance around social distancing so that we don’t jeopardise our health and that of those around us.

The Great British September Clean initiative comes at a time when caring for the environment and living more sustainably has never been more important. And whilst volunteers in Sheffield continue to support the drive for cleaner streets, the council is tackling litter louts head on with well over a thousand Fixed Penalty Notices being issued this year alone.

“The Great British September Clean provides us with an opportunity to celebrate the good work that is already being done across Sheffield but it also highlights that there’s a long way to go; and it starts with us all taking more responsibility. “Litter affects us all and so we would like everyone to show their steely support in Sheffield this September.” Darren Butt, Account Director at Amey Streets Ahead said: “We have been working with local litter picking groups such as Sheffield Litter Pickers since they came together in 2015, providing equipment such as litter pickers, gloves, clear bags and free collection of full

bags to ensure they are disposed of properly. “However, whilst we fully support local communities getting involved in removing litter, there is little doubt that we shouldn’t need to. We urge everyone to take responsibility for their own litter by taking it home with them or using one of the many litter bins on our streets.” In addition to litter clearance, Amey support voluntary litter picking groups all year round as well as delivering an education programme throughout schools in Sheffield. So far, since the start of the contract, they have made 295 school visits, talking to over 63,500 pupils to promote behaviour change when it comes to littering. For more information on how to get involved with the Great British September Clean, including guidance on Coronavirus safety measures, visit: https://www.keepbritaintidy.org/get-involved/support-our-campaigns/great-britishspring-clean

The BJN Awards aim to showcase nursing excellence, highlighting the

critical contribution that nurses make to healthcare. Iain, who lives in Stocksbridge, co-founded the PHA UK 20 years ago to support people living with pulmonary hypertension (PH), a serious lung disease which also affects the heart. The charity works across the UK and has over 4,500 members. Iain has worked within the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for 30 years and in 2005

and I’m thrilled and humbled to have received it. My motivation for my work has always been the patients, who are at the centre of everything. Those I have had the privilege to nurse over the years probably won’t remember my name, but I hope they remember how I made them feel.

The Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit is one of just eight specialist PH treatment centres in the UK.

Professor Chris Morley, chief nurse at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I am delighted that Iain has been recognised by winning this award. It is very well deserved and is worthy recognition of his

dedication and care for our patients over the last 30 years. He is a credit to his team, his profession and the Trust and has made a huge difference to patients with pulmonary vascular disease both here in Sheffield and nationally.” In May 2019, Iain was awarded a Fellowship from the Royal College of Nursing in recognition of a professional career dedicated to supporting people affected by pulmonary hypertension.

BIG WIN FOR FIRSTS BUT SECONDS LOSE HEAVILY Stocksbridge first XI 155 all out (39.2 overs) Liam Grayson 50 Totley Bent first XI 111 all out (36 overs) Jake Vickers 5-22

After last weeks excellent win away at the league leaders Parkhead, the first XI this week played host to Totley Bent as they seeked revenge after losing the reverse fixture. With the sun out at Bracken Moor, captain Andy Hibbert won the toss and elected to bat. Stocksbridge didnt quite get the start they wanted when both opening batsmen Matt Price (three) and Jack Newton (13) were removed with just 16 on the board. It was the resilience of Chris Pickford and Dave Smith who began the rebuilding job for the Green Army.

Liam Grayson; 50 runs, two wickets and three catches

After a 42 run partnership Smith fell for a well made 21. Pickford was joined by Grayson and the pair continued to look to score valuable runs. Pickford fell for a hard working 26 and the game was in the balance at 84-4. It was Grayson though who was to be the star man with the bat, Grayson ran well between the wickets and found the boundary at regular intervals. Harry Hurst (10) and Steve Perry (seven) came and went but Grayson continued to go about his work.

Grayson brought up his half century with a boundary to make his way to a valuable 50. Unfortunately for Grayson and Stocksbridge he then fell next ball. Joe and Andy Hibbert added 14 to the score before the latter was bowled and Stocksbridge were all out for a slightly below par 155. Despite Totley arguably being the slight favourites at the halfway stage, Stocksbridge knew they were still well in with a chance should they bowl and field well which they are more then capable of doing.

Joe Hibbert got Stocksbridge off to a good start when he removed one of the opening batsmen with the score on 10. Totley begun to fight back though as they saw off the two opening bowlers, Joe and Andy Hibbert, for just the loss of one wicket. It was the turn of the change bowlers Jake Vickers and Liam Grayson again after last weeks heroics. Similar to last week, Vickers was first to the party, picking up two wickets in his 2nd over and all of a sudden Totley were three down. Vickers wasn’t done there as he also removed the dangerous opener for 24 after a well taken catch from Captain Hibbert. Grayson wasn’t to be out of the action for long, he quickly grabbed the next two wickets

New footpath runner members shine DESPITE the small number of races at the moment, some Penistone Footpath Runners have been in action and there has been a good deal of success, particularly from some of the club’s newer members. New member, Malcolm Rose, competing in the male over-65 category at the Tatton Park 10k, won his age category in a club record time of 4221. Another new member, James Mumford, took part in the Bradford virtual 10k event finishing in a time of 36-59. James came seventh overall and first in the men’s over-40 age category.

A few weeks previously James also claimed an excellent second overall at the Canal Canter Half Marathon in a new personal best time of 1-18-39. Dawn Broom took part in a socially-distanced six-mile road race in Castleton near Whitby. Runners were set off at ten-second intervals based on predicted finishing times. Dawn completed the route, billed as ‘a road race for fell runners and fell race for road runners’ through the beautiful North York Moors in 52-07, finishing third over-55 lady. Jon Waller maintained his current good form at the Dig Deep trail 10k scooping first place in a time of 4409.

Penistone Footpath Runners also claimed first lady and first man at the virtual Hunshelf Amble where runners timed themselves over the tough seven-mile trail run. Fastest lady was Julie Darigala in 65-46, first overall and first male was Robin Clough in 61-42. Robin also recently ran a section of the Pennine Way from Crowden to Skipton taking just under 12 hours to cover the 50 miles with 8,000 feet of ascent. Robin was joined by Barnsley Harrier Paul Johnson for the full run.

Wright and Colley take wins this week THIS week’s competitions up at Stocksbridge and District Golf Club teed off with Thursday’s mid-week stableford won by Les Wright (43pts) with a better back nine score, runner up Peter Elliott (43pts) and in third place Trevor Newton (41pts). Just missing a podium spot was Stocksbridge’s captain Brian Montgomery. The weekend brought two comp’s Scratch Cup over two rounds for the

lower handicap players the spoils being taken by the Finney brothers Pete (138) pipping Andy (139) and in third place Ben Stringer (141). The Stanley Crawshaw Cup over the same two rounds for higher handicap players this was won by Curt Newton (121) in second place Callum Brown (123) and in third spot Oliver Warren (125).

The ladies on Sunday played for The Jubilee Trophy won by Charlotte Colley (net 68) with Liana O’Sullivan (70) in second and Sue Hill (74) in third place. This was the last of nine competitions played in 2020 that contribute towards the order of Merit Champions Bowl Trophy, the eventual overall winner being Liana O’Sullivan. Malcolm Rose

and Totley were now looking in really trouble. It would be Vickers and Grayson who continued to put Totley to the sword, this time it was Vickers picking up the next two wickets, both of which were caught by Grayson, a diving one hander and a testing catch coming over his shoulder. With those wickets Vickers picked up his second consecutive five-wicket haul, this time completing his spell of 10 overs with figures of 5-22. At 93-8 Totley were now staring down the barrel of defeat, spinner Jack Newton came into the attack and the runs dried up and Newton picked up the last two wickets, both expertly caught on the boundary by Chris Pickford. This meant Totley were bowled out for 111 falling 44 runs short and Stocksbridge picking up the 25 points on offer. Baslow 1st XI 206-5 (40 overs) Stocksbridge 2nd XI 66 all out (23 overs) Next week sees the curtain come down on a shortened season due to Covid-19. The first XI host Sheffield University Staff at Bracken Moor on Saturday and the seconds will look to bounce back as they host Richmond on the Sunday. Both sides have their eyes focused on second place finishes in their respective leagues.

STEELS KNOCKED OUT OF CUP Stocksbridge Park Steels 1-3 Staylybridge Celtic

Match report by Adam Allcroft

STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels put in a performance to be proud of but eventually succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against higher league Stalybridge Celtic in front of the BBC Sport cameras in the FA Cup Preliminary Round. Stalybridge took the lead through an impressive lob from Michael Burke but Stocksbridge levelled thanks to a low and powerful free kick from Scott Ruthven. In the second half though Stalybrige were able to get the win thanks to goals from Krisel Prifti and substitute Keano Deacon, the latter coming in the last minute to kill off the tie. Stocksbridge were looking like the better side in the first few minutes, with Josh Nodder getting the first shot on target after his header was well saved by Thomas Stewart, but Stalybridge were able to score with their first chance of the game. Burke spotted Ed Hall off of his line and was able to lob over him and into the back of the net. Despite going one down, Stocksbridge continued to have more of the ball and more of the chances. Luke Mangham almost put himself on every FA Cup highlight reel for the rest of the season when he teed up a volley for himself but his top corner effort was acrobatically saved by Stewart. The resulting corner also made Stewart work as the ball was headed out for Kurtis Turner to drive a show low and

towards goal but the Stalybridge keeper got low to palm it out for a corner.

Nodder was working hard and very keen to get the equalising goal. He first took a shot that would end up going high and wide and then got even closer with an acrobatic volley inside the box which went just over. So when Stocksbridge got a free kick from 25 yards out, most expected Nodder to be the one to take it. However it would be Ruthven who’d step up and that worked out very well for the Steels. He hit his shot low and past an outstretched Stewart to level the game. The game would quieten down for the rest of the half except for when a Stalybridge pass cut the Stocksbridge defence in half. Burke and Berat Ustabasi both ran onto it and neither seemed to be sure who was taking the shot. By the time Burke hit it, the chance had gone and the shot went wide in a let off for the Steels. There was excitement to start the second half as Mangham in a sliding tackle on the goalkeeper Stewart but the Stalybridge shot stopper was quick to get the ball into his arms. But Stalybridge retook the lead not long after this. There was a mix-up in the Stocksbridge defence and the ball was gifted to Prifti who took his opportunity to give Stalybridge the lead. Stalybridge would start to take control of the match at this point with them having

more of the ball with Burke in particularly being a nuisance for the Stocksbridge defence. His overhead kick was tamely dealt with but he was given a free header that should have been in the back of the net rather than over the bar. Stalybridge had another gilt edge chance when Burke went free on goal only for Hall to save. Charley Doyle then got a follow-up but Michael Trench was the hero, blocking on the line to keep Stocksbridge in the game. The big what if will come from a massive scramble towards the end of the game. After the ball was played into the box, Ruthven hooked the ball onto the bar. A mad battle to score started and Stocksbridge had three shots blocked before Stalybridge were able to clear. Stocksbridge were pushing for the equaliser but it would be Stalybridge who would score and knock the Steels out of the FA Cup. Deacon got the ball in the box with all the space he could have ever wanted and finished to secure their passage into the next round of the cup. Manager Chris Hilton will now have to wait another year to get his first FA Cup win with Stocksbridge. They’ll hope to bounce back with their opening Northern Premier League South East fixture against Kidsgrove Athletic. This takes place on September 19 at the Eco Power Environmental Stadium and you can reserve your tickets by contacting the club now.
