FOUR NORTH SHEFFIELD PUBS SHUT SHEFFIELD City Council has issued prohibition notices to four pubs in north Sheffield and a takeaway in the city following breaches of COVID-19 rules over the weekend of September 19 and 20. The pubs are the Pen Nook at Deepcar; Pack Horse Inn at Chapeltown; Malin Bridge Inn at Hillsborough; Sports Shack at Hillsborough and the takeaway is the Chicken Stop in the City Centre. As the city continues to see cases rise, it is vital that the public, businesses and hospitality venues follow the guidelines in order to prevent further spread of the virus. In the case of these five venues, officers from the council found clear breaches and have issued the prohibition notices, effectively ordering the venues to close. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health for Sheffield City Council, said: “We don’t want to do this: this is a last resort but some places are just not getting the message to act safely and prevent further spread of the virus. If we do not take measures such as these then we could end up in an even worse position. “Rates have been steadily increasing in Sheffield over recent weeks, we have uni-

versity students coming into the city this week, and we must do all we can to ensure people follow the guidance and safety advice from ourselves and our partners in the NHS and Government. We want residents and visitors to be able to enjoy the city, but in a safe and responsible way. I understand people’s frustrations about how long this has gone on for and that people want to see the end of it, but that will not happen unless we all adhere to the guidance, including the new rule of six.”

with us and working really hard to create safe environments for their customers, and we are grateful for their efforts but I cannot stress the seriousness of the situation we are in. The purpose of the rules is to protect us all; Covid-19 is a dangerous respiratory disease which can spread quickly. We all need to do our bit to stop the spread.”

The closures follow enforcement exercises by council officers at the weekend. The four pubs were given prohibition notices for not complying with the regulations and guidance, creating a serious health and safety risk.

The Council continues to work with premises, supporting them with how to operate safely during the pandemic. This includes sending information packs out, visiting premises to advise them on how to operate safely and providing a wealth of advice and support. Most businesses have responded favourably and have done their bit for the city to keep people safe well.

The issues witnessed during the evening included a lack of control of customers, not enough staff, lack of door supervision, loud music, singing, dancing, groups of more than 6, lack of social distancing, people mingling between groups hugging and kissing as well as people standing at the bar, an apparent lack of table service, and no mechanism for gathering track and trace information.

The Council will continue to support premises and businesses during this crisis and will provide support and advice. We will continue to work with partners to make people alert to the fact that the virus is still out there and we all need to do our bit to prevent further lockdown measures. The Council will take action where necessary and have undertaken over 2000 visits to venues since lockdown was eased.

Greg added: “Intelligence tells us that the vast majority of premises are working

Sky-House coming to Peggy Tub site PLANS for the redevelopment of Stocksbridge landmark The Peggy Tub have been approved by Sheffield Council. Following extensive discussions with the team at Coda Planning - experts in the development of residential projects throughout the country - city planners approved proposals for the redevelopment of the former social club in New Road, Stocksbridge. The once popular venue finally closed in 2015, the victim of changing times and drinking habits. Architects at award-winning Sheffield multi disciplinary practice CODA Studios have created the latest phase of the acclaimed Sky-House concept specifically for the site, which is close to the acclaimed Fox Valley retail development. Sky-House’s 21st century take on back-toback housing creates sensitively dense, beautiful and naturally eco-

friendly homes complete with their signature roof gardens, terraces and expansive windows. “We have been overwhelmed by the phenomenal response to Sky-House and delighted at the way the concept is now spreading throughout South Yorkshire,” said Sky-House Co cofounder David Cross. “Sky-House is already coming to the former British Tissues site in Oughtibridge and we are really pleased to see this second smaller site in Stocksbridge has now been approved. “Before work even begins we have already had more than 60 enquiries about this Stocksbridge development. “We believe this is the best possible use for the site, bringing much needed new housing stock for this growing and increasingly popular north Sheffield community.”

Appeal after body found in Rivelin car fire SHORTLY after 2.30pm on September 18, police were called to the scene of a fire in the Rivelin area of Sheffield.

The fire service had responded to Lodge Lane to reports of a car on fire in the street. As the fire was extinguished, a body was discovered in the front of the car.

An investigation is now in its early stages and at this time, the death is being treated as unexplained.

The police are appealing for anyone who was present at the scene this afternoon to contact police on 101. The incident number is 447 of 18 September.

Emergency services will remain in the area and a cordon is in place while forensic and door-to-door enquiries continue.

New technology on trial in Stocksbridge LIBERTY Steel Group and Shiftec, two members of the sustainable industry leader GFG Alliance, are partnering to deploy sensor technology with the potential to enhance safety and improve efficiency at industrial sites. Under the two-year project, Shiftec will test and pilot its Aquila system, which uses a system similar to GPS to track the precise position of people, equipment and vehicles around factories in real time. The system reduces workplace accidents, enhances the efficiency of movement and – integrated with Shiftec’s high-speed, long-range network solution – can allow for remote control operation of equipment. This control solution is building on Shiftec’s Gemini system, which has already been proven in the film and television industry as well as defence. The £10 million program is being funded by Innovate UK through its Manufacturing Made Smarter Challenge, which is part of the government’s larger Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. Shiftec will trial the technology at partner companies in the metals, engineering and industrial sectors in-

cluding Liberty’s Speciality Steels’ site in Stocksbridge and its Pipe Mill in Hartlepool. Also involved in the consortium are the Materials Processing Institute and TSC Simulation of Nottingham. The technology falls under the umbrella category known as Industry 4.0, or the Fourth Industrial Revolution, whereby artificial intelligence is used to enhance the productivity of workplaces. Anthony Blackwell, Chief Technology Officer, Liberty Engineering and Managing Director of Shiftec, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to further test the potential of technology developed at Liberty which could make a real difference across many different workplaces. “This system can allow for a wireless method of controlling heavy equipment and vehicles. It can intervene automatically to prevent imminent accidents, and it can identify small ways to make processes more efficient which, over time, add up to a great deal.” At Liberty Steel’s site in Stocksbridge, the project will examine technologies for semi-autonomous cranes, improved mill measurement capa-

bility for the monitoring of product during rolling, and collect 3D scan data to create a working digital twin of at least one of the mill stands. At Hartlepool, the system will improve the measurement of pipe shape during forming. Liberty Steel’s UK Technical Director, Dr Simon Pike said: “This project, including the input from Shiftec is a significant step forward for both Liberty sites and will act as a test bed for the use of Industry 4.0 approaches and automation. “In conjunction with digital camera technology and metallurgical models we aim to get more precise metallurgical information and dimensional control.” Shiftec, Liberty Engineering and Liberty Steel are all part of the GFG Alliance, the group of industrial businesses owned by Sanjeev Gupta and his family. Aquila has potential applications well beyond steel – including applications in food plants, chemicals factories, aluminium smelters, marine, aerospace as well as the automotive and motorsport industry.

“ESSENTIAL WORKS” TO AFFECT SUPERTRAM NETWORK AT WEEKEND ESSENTIAL works on sections of the Supertram network between Cathedral and Hillsborough will affect the Blue and Yellow routes on the weekend of September 26 and 27. To minimise disruptions, dedicated tram replacement bus service Y1 will run between Middlewood Park and Ride and Commercial Street, in the city centre, connecting passengers to the tram network at Fitzalan Square. The service will run up to every 12 minutes on Saturdays and 20 minutes on Sundays. Timetables will be available at: https://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/

en-gb/newsupdates/railreplacement. For Malin Bridge, customers can use services 81 and 82 or nearby services 52a, 61 and 62 as alternative travel options to the tram. The Yellow route will operate between Meadowhall Interchange and Cathedral only to a revised timetable. West Street, Netherthorpe Road, Infirmary Road, Bamforth Street, Hillsborough Park, Leppings Lane and Middlewood Park and Ride tram stops will not be served. The Blue route will operate between Donetsk Way and Cathedral only to the current revised timetable. Malin Bridge, Hillsborough,

Langsett/Primrose View, Shalesmoor, The University of Sheffield, City Hall, Moss Way, Crystal Peaks, B e i g hton / D r a ke h ou s e Lane, Waterthorpe, Westfield and Halfway tram stops will not be served. The Purple route and the Tram train service will not be affected. These works to repair concrete track slabs will be carried out in addition to planned rail replacement works currently underway in the Crystal Peaks area. Together these essential works will ensure that South Yorkshire continues to benefit from a safe and reliable tram network for years to come.

HUGE SELECTION OF SUITES Loius Calder and his son Daniel from Eco -Power Environmental with Stocksbridge Park Steels vice chairman Roger Gissing and chairman Graham Furness with the new shirt and logo.

LAST Saturday, Stocksbridge Park Steels entertained Stalybridge Celtic FC in the preliminary round of the FA Cup and, in a first for Steels, the game was televised live on the BBC. This was a fitting occasion for Steels to welcome their new sponsors and their families to the renamed EcoPower stadium.

HIGH CHAIRS AND RISERS FROM £199 Princess

Steels’ new sponsorship is in partnership with Eco-Power Environmental who are based in Doncaster and Hull. Eco-Power are the leading company in the country in their line of waste management. The deal has resulted in the stadium being renamed and it is now the EcoPower Stadium. The first team shirts will also carry the Eco-Power logo. The sponsorship has secured the near future for Stocksbridge after what had been a very worrying period for the club during lockdown.

The future is looking very good indeed, with another junior pitch being reinstated across from the ground allowing two more junior teams to return to Bracken Moor along with two teams on the training pitch and two teams inside the Eco-Power Stadium. The club is once again bringing the junior section back into Stocksbridge. There is a renewed optimism around the club and this has brought an increase in season ticket sales and a general feel-good atmosphere.

Harry Gration MBE becomes patron of Paces Paces has worked with individuals living with neurological conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, strokes, MS, Parkinson’s, and brain injuries since 1997. The charity teaches children life-changing skills using conductive education - such as sitting, standing, walking, speaking, communication and self-care - in an environment they can have fun, develop friendships, and feel like they belong. Harry said: “I am absolutely thrilled to become a patron for Paces. I have supported the school and charity for a number of years and it’s a place which is very special to me.

ONE of Yorkshire’s most recognisable faces is to become a patron of Paces, the South Yorkshire specialist centre, charity and school for children and adults with Cerebral Palsy and motor disorders.

Broadcaster and journalist Harry Gration MBE says he is ‘thrilled’ to be supporting the organisation more formally and looking forward to supporting their work, including

the campaign to build a new home for Paces near Sheffield. Harry, who turns 70 this year, has been a familiar face on television in Yorkshire for over four decades and was appointed an

MBE for services to broadcasting in 2013. He has supported Paces for many years, including compering their 2019 charity ball and helping organise visits by Sheffield United.

“I want to do all that I can to support them on their fundraising journey to build a new school and centre for children and adults with neurological conditions as this will allow them to support up to three

times as many families which is just amazing! “I’m very excited to be part of #TeamPaces and look forward to working with their fantastic children, adults, families and staff.” Spencer Pitfield, Chief Executive of Paces, said: “Harry is someone who is known and loved across Yorkshire and beyond, so I am delighted he is becoming a patron of Paces. He has long been a supporter of the work we do, and an ambassador for our charity and school, and we are thrilled he has accepted our invitation to take up the role more formally. “We look forward to working with him as we continue our ambitious and exciting plans to build a new home so we can support more children, adults and families across Yorkshire in the future.”

you can call her on 07984 032519 or email: footworks-podiatry@ hotmail.co.uk Melanie graduated from Huddersfield University almost 10 years ago with an honours degree in Podiatry. Melanie’s route into private practice began by working as an associate at a podiatry clinic in nearby Penistone which she found very enjoyable, gaining valuable skills and experience in all aspects of podiatry and chiropody by working alongside Mary Brady, a very experienced podiatrist with over 20 years’ experience. This then led to Melanie providing a mobile service, Footworks Podiatry, visiting and treating patients in their own homes.

Stocksbridge Fairtrade Town status

Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said: “It’s unacceptable that people across South Yorkshire and nationally are unable to get a Coronavirus test. This was a national priority when the Government wanted to reach their target of 100,000 tests a day. But now, when they are urgently needed and the rate of cases are rising significantly across the North of England, the Government is failing in its duty to ensure sufficient tests are available.

I am pleased to announce that the Stocksbridge Fairtrade Group have successfully applied for the renewal of the Fairtrade Town status. This was first awarded in 2015 and renewed in 2016, 2018 and now in 2020.

Five months later and The Green Army were hosting Sheffield University Staff at Bracken Moor for the final game of the shortened season. Captain Andy Hibbert rallied his men one last time and after losing the toss, Bridge were asked to bat first. Matt Price and Jack Newton strode out to the crease looking to get Stocksbridge off to a good start and finish the season with a bang. Newton it was who took that literally as no house in the local vicinity looked safe as Newton was in a destructive mood. Newton found the boundary from the off, an opening bowling partnership of a medium paced bowling and an off spinner seemed to play right into Newton’s hands.

Both sides victorious as curtain comes down on shortened season In a flash Newton hit another boundary and brought up his half century in eight overs. After Price was dismissed for four, Chris Pickford as always scored a classy looking 12 before giving his wicket away and Ant Siddall came and went for six. Newton continued to go about his work and scored a magnificent century dispatching the ball to all parts. Newton was finally dismissed for an excellent 117 from 65 balls. The Stocksbridge middle to lower order contributed throughout, Harry Hurst batted excellently for 33 before being bowled. Steve Perry added 16, Matt Hague a close to a run a ball 15 and Joe Hibbert ended the innings in entertaining fashion with a wonderful quickfire 38 from 24 balls to post a top drawer total of 268 from their allotted 40 overs. At the halfway point Stocksbridge knew that they were well in the driving seat and extremely strong favourites going into the second half of the game. In true knowing this, the Green Army really struggled to get going, Uni Staff required something special and despite Joe Hibbert removing opener Robinson for 0, Uni Staff made an excellent start. After a sloppy start, Stocksbridge turned it on in patches to keep Uni Staff at bay. With Uni Staff 77-1 from 12 overs, a partnership was just starting to build and the visitors were just starting to dream. Before any serious

thoughts of a run chase, Jake Vickers who had been brought into the attack to replace Joe Hibbert removed the dangerous opener for 39, caught at cover by Liam Grayson. Grayson himself seems to have built an excellent bowling partnership with Vickers and backed him up in the next over by removing the No.3 for 34 after an excellent catch from Newton and in a flash Uni Staff were now 77-3. The game from here on in certainly wasn’t a thriller, Uni Staff protected their wickets well but in true never looked like challenging Stocksbridge’s mammoth total. Chris Pickford bowled an economical spell and helped himself to a wicket in the process. Newton who seemed to be able to do little wrong turned his arm over and grabbed two wickets to go with his earlier ton. In a hunt for late wickets Jake Vickers returned and picked up his second and Stocksbridge’s seventh but the game was unfortunately not much of a spectacle. Uni Staff slowly trickled up to 167-7 with very little interest in the run chase and Stocksbridge completed a whopping 101 run victory to end the 2020 season. Richmond 1st XI 111 all out (31.2 overs) Chris Thwaites 4-7, Jack Firth 3-45 Stocksbridge 2nd XI 112-6 (27.1 overs) Chris Ogley 28, Tom Dobson 28, Jack Reeves 24

War Memorial lose to champions Redmires 5-1 Oughtibridge War Memorial OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial went down 5-1away at the current league champions and with players missing and five 18-year-olds in the starting line up, this was always going to be a tough ask. However, it was Oughtibridge who made the early running and should have scored when Matt Harrison

and Charlie Cope both shot straight at the keeper. A couple of great stops by Adnett for Oughtibridge were needed before the visitors went in front with a great goal from Callum Simms, who hit an unstoppable shot from 20 yards. It was nearly two when debutant Callum Spencer hit the

bar. Just before half time, Redmires hit two quick fire goals and then they added a third straight after half time to effectively kill the game. Oughtibridge still kept pushing and despite going close on several occasions it was the champions who added two more and won their 17th straight game.

VETERAN RUNS RINGS AROUND PRESTWICH Penistone scored all of theirs with Jordan Coduri, Ash Ellis, Charlie Baird, Kane Swinburn and finally Ring all converting. Another hero for Church was goalkeeper Adam Rhodes who saved Alfie Belcher’s well struck shot. Manager Ian Richards said: “Cup games are all about the result, more about the outcome because you don’t get another chance in a cup game, you’re out of the competition. “In a league game yes, you want to win every one but you know you’ve got a

game coming up soon to rectify things if you do lose. I’m so pleased with the result, so pleased with the outcome we now progress to the next round of the FA Vase. “I’m really pleased for Andy Ring to score the winning penalty, at 36 he led the line brilliantly, I can’t fault his attitude or commitment and it’s credit to him really at 36 that today he was probably our best attacker so I’m really pleased he scored the winning penalty.”

Stocksbridge Golf Club VETERAN striker Andy Ring was the hero for Penistone Church in the Buildbase FA Vase First Qualifying Round, scoring the opening goal and the winning penalty against Prestwich Heys.

The former Stocksbridge Park Steels striker opening the scoring on eight minutes but a Jack Coop penalty just after half time levelled the scores.

Lawson didn’t think twice SHEFFIELD Tigers Speedway signing Richard Lawson didn’t think twice when asked if he wanted a British Final spot.

Lawson, who hasn’t yet raced for the club because the league season was wiped out, was the first rider revealed for the event at Ipswich on Saturday week, September 26. “It’s an honour to ride in such a meeting and to have the chance to win your national championship is something I wasn’t going to let go,” he said. “Some riders have declined but I don’t really understand that.” And the Cumbrian charger admits he’s been blown away by the backing of the Owlerton faithful despite no racing. “When it was announced I was going to be in the British Final I got a lot of good luck messages,” Lawson explained. “I knew I’d get a fair few from Eastbourne supporters after racing for them last year but I was surprised with how many I got from the Sheffield supporters.

“I probably shouldn’t be surprised though because even though I haven’t officially raced for them yet, I don’t know what it is but we’ve always had a good connection. “Whenever I’ve guested for them in the past, or even when I’ve raced against them, they’ve always been very friendly and appreciative and to know they’ll be cheering me on means a lot.” The meeting will be available to watch live thanks to a new online streaming service. Stream tickets are available from sportcentral. tv and cost £12.95 with the meeting build-up starting at 7.15 and the first race is 7.45. The stream will go live at 6.30. Registration and email verification will be required before purchase. Fans watching the British Final from their own home can now also add to the racenight experience with the official meeting programme delivered to their door. STEELS LOSE SEASON OPENER Stocksbridge PS 0-1 Kidsgrove Athletic By Adam Allcroft Photo: Peter Revitt STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels were not able to break down a stubborn Kidsgrove Athletic and lost 1-0 on the opening day of the Northern Premier League Division South East. It was not a game for the purists and the only goal of the game came late on when Kingsley Adu-Gyamfi was able to get himself enough space for a strong shot that left Ed Hall with little chance. In what was a cagy first half, it took 15 minutes until the first real chance on goal. On the back of his FA Cup magic last week, Scott Ruthven used good footwork to get past his man. He hit a powerful shot but the fingertips of Kieran Harrison prevented him getting Stocksbridge’s first goal of the season. The next chance would also go Stocksbridge’s way but Luke Mangham’s volley was comfortably saved. Kidsgrove had plenty of the ball in the first half and while Stocksbridge had more looks on goal, they did have chances of their own. The biggest chance for them came when captain Anthony Malbon turned his defender and curled the ball towards goal. Luckily for the Steels, it went just wide. They also went close when Hall was forced to

palm Kyle Diskin’s corner onto the post to avoid an embarrassment. After that for the rest of the first half while Stocksbridge did get some shots off but none really tested Harrison. Josh Nodder hit the ball over after a cross and Kurt Turner also hit well over from a long range attempt. The crowd stirred when Mangham attempted an overhead kick but it was blocked. Ruthven also couldn’t repeat last week’s free kick goal when his set piece hit the wall from just outside the box. The second half was a game of very few chances, with there just being one a piece. Unfortunately, Kidsgrove took their chance. Stocksbridge’s chance came early in the first half. Ruthven caused chaos in the box and ensued a scramble where it was ended by the number 10 hitting over. The game was not one to liven up the neutrals but there would be a goal thanks to Kidsgrove. Not much looked on for Adu-Gyami when he picked up the ball on the left but he got enough space to hit a shot into the far corner and past Hall. It would be the only goal of the game and Stocksbridge were not able to get the equaliser.
