GROUP DEMANDS CLUB OPENS BOOKS AS DISPUTE RUMBLES ON

A CAMPAIGN group formed by members of Deepcar’s Lowood Club is demanding the committee open the books and reveal how much it is paying a company to advise it in its dispute with the former club steward and his wife.

The Lowood Club Steering Group is angry that club members have been denied access to the accounts, which will reveal how much the club committee has been paying the Manchester-based firm, Peninsula. It has not only been advising the club but also representing it at the Employment Tribunal brought by former club steward John Clayton and his wife Julie, which has now paused and will reconvene in January.

A Steering Group spokesman said: “This question has been asked on numerous occasions. The members knew nothing about this company until highlighted by the Steering Group.

“We ask why the committee feel the need to waste club monies on an expensive outside company who seem to be making the decisions that the committee should be making.” Secretary Brian Firth pledged to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) once lockdown had been lifted but, despite Lowood Club Steering Group handing in a petition that should have forced the club to hold an EGM, Mr Firth and other senior members of the club committee have ignored

members’ wishes and have stayed silent over their failure to hold an EGM and allow members to question them over the sacking of John and Julie Clayton. At the Employment Tribunal the legal challenge faced by the club committee is not only in relation to the alleged wrongful dismissal of Mr and Mrs Clayton but also the bid to evict them from their living quarters during the pandemic. The Steering Group also wants answers as to why the club did not re-open after lockdown was lifted when Sheffield City Council has stated the club steward does not have to live at Lowood Club to be allowed to run the club.

AUTHOR GOES ON A PUB CRAWL THROUGH LOCAL HISTORY They provided a convenient base for all kinds of itinerant traders, from dentists, quack doctors, and portrait painters to travelling shows, menageries, and waxworks. Not forgetting the odd travelling bear. The author is an amateur historian and keen genealogist with over forty years’ experience of researching the local area and a childhood spent touring the back-street pubs of Joshua Tetley & Co., thanks to her father, an electrician subcontracted to the brewery. Many of these pubs are now nothing but memories but some of their stories are told here so that those memories live on. A BOOK by local author Claire Pearson was published on October 3 and it’s all about the history of our local public houses. The book is called ‘A Drink With our Ancestors; a pub crawl through time’ and contains stories gathered by the author from pubs past and present, from their early days until the eve of World War Two. Generations of locals and a succession of travellers have spent their leisure hours in these plac-

es, and they were not merely social hubs where people met to drink and talk. They played host to coroners’ courts, manorial courts, friendly societies, political hustings, auctions of property and livestock, the payment of rents, the hiring of staff, and they were where people met to conduct business, whether honest or dishonest. Their yards stabled the stagecoach horses and were used by carriers, blacksmiths, wheelwrights and travelling salesmen.

The book includes tales from the pubs in and around Stocksbridge, Bolsterstone, Deepcar, Green Moor, Hunshelf and Wigtwizzle (please note: modern pubs and Working Men’s Clubs are not included.) Available direct from Amazon in paperback or Kindle editions. There is more information on the website www.stocksbridgetimespast.co.uk, which not only features many photos of our local pubs but also has articles about the local fire brigade, the Motor Club, Bramall Lane in Hunshelf, Thomas Oxley, and a collection of local films.

There will also be an early service at 8am at the Parish Centre on Housley Park. Both services will offer a warm welcome back for everyone. After spending months of offering worship on-

line via YouTube and its website, St. John’s has taken the decision that it’s time to resume worship. A recent survey of the congregation found that a majority, over 70 people, were keen to be back together on Sundays. Vicar of St. John’s church, Revd. Rick Stordy, said: “It may seem an odd time to be opening the doors, in the middle of a pandemic.

“It’s a huge relief to many who’ve been isolated, missing human warmth and company. It offers our community the chance to explore our spiritual needs. For many, those are just as necessary as work, education or shopping.”

Local residents recall the well being a pleasant place where parents too toddlers or children played. Young girls in bathing costumes on summer days played at beauty competitions walking on the wall top as if it were a catwalk. One Worraller recalls him and his chums drinking the water as they roamed around the area. Neither would be possible now.

With such a rich heritage it was a pity that neglect of the drystone walls had resulted in the deterioration over a couple of generations. Grant awarded for Historic Worrall wash trough to be restored

A generation earlier the washing tough was functional. Carol Whittaker, Sheila Storey and Jane Wilson all report relatives or neighbours as using the long low part of the well as a washing trough. It was the arrival of piped water to Worrall in the mid-1920s which made the washing trough redundant. Its origins though are lost in history.

Music, fun and laughter for residents at local care home

MUSIC, fun and laughter have kept residents at Belmont House Care & Nursing Home in Stocksbridge upbeat and busy throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Lockdown has posed new challenges to working in the care industry, but the care team at the home have organised various events, including games, sing-a-longs and movie afternoons to keep people happy and entertained.

Families have enjoyed visiting their relatives over the summer, socially distanced visits took place in the garden during the fine weather. Where visits haven’t been possible during the lock-

down, staff facilitated daily phone and video calls for families, many using them for the first time. The 101st birthday of Gerda Freeman was recently celebrated in style.

Gerda enjoyed a birthday cake and sing-along as she celebrated with staff and residents. At the party, Gerda revealed her secrets to living a long life; good food, plenty of exercise and lots of husbands. Her advice to the younger generation is to enjoy life and never worry.

Thousands benefit from Rotary Club’s work SEVERAL weeks ago, we reported on the selfless activities of octogenarian Lewis Atkinson, former president of the Rotary Club of Wortley, with regards to the supply of face shields and masks into the regions of south and west Yorkshire. Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 in March, the Rotary Club of Wortley, through Lewis, 86, has supplied 3,508 face shields - thanks to Seth Lilliker - and 12,960 face masks - thanks to Shelagh’s sewing group - of which 7,375 masks were supplied to care/residential homes, doctor’s surgeries and care groups. Food banks have a real need for PPE protection, both staff and the public who have not been able to access such protection. In response, Lewis has organised the supply of 1,085 face masks to north Sheffield, Stocksbridge, Rotherham and Barnsley. In addition, with secondary schools and colleges re-opening, the need for face masks for students and staff has increased. Lewis has responded by contact and the supply of 4,500 face masks to the areas of Barnsley, Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster. The Rotary Club of Wortley continues to support and help the local communities, involving people of all ages and cultures through this very difficult time.

Night Strider Paul heads for the Yorkshire coast BURNCROSS man Paul Hartley has found the picturesque way to support the virtual St Luke’s Hospice Night Strider challenge.

Paul is planning to walk the ten miles along the spectacular North Sea coast from his family’s caravan in the North Yorkshire village of Burniston to Ravenscar. Paul usually takes part in Burncross pub The Acorn’s charity fundraising events but with all those on hold due to the Coronavirus pandemic, he decided to go his own way and support St Luke’s. 2020 would have marked Night Strider’s sixth anniversary but when the pandemic took hold, a new plan had to be developed - and Night Strider has gone virtual!

Pricecheck and Gripple - will see participants register free of charge to do their own fundraising event any time between between Saturday October 3 - the evening that Night Strider would have taken place - and Saturday October 31. “I’ve had friends and family who have been patients at St Luke’s so I know what a good job they do,” Paul said. “It’s about a ten mile walk from Burniston to Ravenscar and I’ve not set myself a definite date yet - I want to make sure the weather’s good!” Paul has already raised more than 80 per cent of his initial £200 target and anybody who wants to support him on his walk can visit https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/ Paul-Hartley-nudge

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Wellbeing Corner By Ged Jenkins-Omar, Best Selling Author of ‘Help with Anxiety’ available on Amazon. Hello! I hope you are having a good day? This week is extremely important in the mental health calendar, as Saturday October 10 is World Mental Health Day. The World Health Organization states that, “World Mental Health Day is observed on 10th October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilising efforts in support of mental health. It is about breaking down barriers and stigmas that surround mental health and about working towards

better services and support for those in need.

I think as a society we are getting better about talking about mental health but there is still a long way to go. I think part of the reason we are becoming more open about it, is because unfortunately, more of us are suffering with it. This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day is ‘Mental Health for All’. With the numbers of people suffering from mental health problems growing, this theme reflects the fact that we need to make mental health support and help a reality for all – for everyone, everywhere. When you look at the UK, the mental health charity Mind suggests that one in four adults and one in

10 children will suffer from a mental health problem in any given year.

other, strangers or not, as you never know who is going through a tough time in their life.

and support out there, so do not allow yourself or others suffer in silence.

So, if you do not suffer yourself, it is highly likely that you know or care for someone that does. If you are on a bus with 40 people then an average of 10 people on that bus might be suffering from some form of mental health illness.

I’m not suggesting you should ask every stranger how they are feeling, but maybe phone that friend you haven’t spoken to for a while. Get in touch with your family member that you used to speak to a lot.

Break down those barriers and break down those stigmas. Where possible, be an empathetic ear for those who open up to you and if you are struggling, remember to talk about how you are feeling - always.

If you are in a gym with 20 people then an average of five people might be suffering. And if you are in a supermarket with 200 people then an average of 50 people might be experiencing mental health problems.

Or make time for yourself and go out with your friends for that meal. Also, remember to be kind to yourself, and don’t put yourself under too much pressure. If you are suffering, you should be able to lean on your loved ones for support.

But what does this all this mean? Well for a start it means a lot of people are struggling. It also means that we should be kind to one an-

And if you are in a good place, you should be aware of the role you can have for your family and friends who are not. There is lots of help

ELLIOTT ROGAN CONTINUES FINE FORM

ELLIOTT Rogan (pictured) has had a good summer of golf, lowering his handicap from 15 in May to 12 in October.

He actually got down to 11 in September, but has just tipped back over to 12 in the last couple of weeks. In the last week he won the Pro’s Prize on October 3 in torrential rain; came ninth in the midweek nine hole stableford and still played better than his handicap. The week before, in a South Yorkshire Am Am competition at Hillsborough, Elliott came third in the four ball team stableford format, playing with Joseph Sedgwick, Liam and Liana O’Sullivan. Elliott’s consistent form has seen him play at or better to his handicap for more than half of the competitions he

has entered over the summer months.

The weather over the weekend did affect the number playing, particularly on Saturday when the scheduled Fox Trophy was delayed until next weekend because of the torrential rain and wind. A Pro’s Prize was hastily organised for those still keen enough to go out and as already mentioned was won by Elliott Rogan (12) with a highly creditable 36 points. Carl Thomas (15) was second with 32 points and Jay Whittaker (19) was third with 30 points. Sunday saw slightly better conditions for a second Pro’s Prize of the weekend. Danny Costello (7) won the competition with 42 points and played to one over gross with his score. Mick Hulbert (13) also scored 42 points,

but lost out to Danny with a lower back nine total. Steve Coutts (9) came in third with 40 points. On October 1, with less time for play in the evening, the weekly stableford was a nine hole competition, with players handicaps adjusted down accordingly. Richard Grimmer (7) won with 22 points in a tightly fought competition. Trevor Moseley (5) was second with 21 points. Andrew Finney (0) playing to scratch came third with 20 points, beating Neil Elliott (5) who had the same score but lost out on count back. Andrew’s nine holes included three birdies in four holes.

Mackie wins mile track race

HUGH Mackie, in a time of 4-54, won a close battle with Barnsley AC runner Gary Briscoe (4-55) over one mile on a wet and windy Wednesday evening at the Dorothy Highman track in Curdworth.

Penistone Footpath Runners booked the track for the evening and ran a series of races from one mile down to 100 metres for the club’s younger members. There were lots of good performances on the night and despite the challenging conditions a number of club records were set. Those recording club records at the one mile distance were Ray Brown (over-80 man 9-11), Julia Johnson (over-55 lady 6-39), Malcolm Rose (over65 man, 6-13), Bill Phillips (over70 man 6-58). Youth runner Graihagh Turner also set clubs records in the girls under-13 category at one mile (5-55) and 400 metres (1-16). Bill Phillips ran a Virtual London Marathon around the paths of Penistone recording an impressive 3-53-09 for the 26.2 mile distance. The Hedgehog Half marathon was cancelled for Covid-19 reasons but a number of Penistone runners decided to run a virtual equivalent closer to home. Dawn Broom was one of the those and ran a time of 1-35-24 which if it had been a certified race would have been a club record.

Other Penistone runners doing a virtual Hedgehog Half were Jacqueline Howsham (1-49-01 pb), Ian Sutcliffe (1-41-24), Jon Lawcock (1-43-48), Richard Williams (1-4236), Rhianna Banford (1-42-34) and Kris Smith (1-45-12). Gareth Cook ran the Big Flat Runway Marathon in very tough windy conditions, nonetheless Gareth managed to clock a very impressive 2-35-16 to claim eighth place. The Runway event also hosted some shorter races including 5k which new member James Mumford took part in.

James ran a very impressive 17-12 to claim 2nd in the over-40 man category which was also a new club record. John Spencer completed the 10k event in 1-05-02. Much further afield Nichola McNally ran the route normally used for the Loch Ness marathon in very tough conditions and achieved a very impressive 3-30. Some member of Penistone competed in an orienteering event in Norfolk Park, Sheffield. Completing the Green course were Hugh Mackie (seventh) and Lorraine Mackie (18th). Ewan Mackie came a creditable fourth on the Light Green course whilst Richard Mackie came 14th on the Orange course. Flynn Rogers came 15th on the challenging Yellow course.

Peterborough Utd Ladies 1 Oughtibridge WM Ladies 2 OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial Ladies defied the odds and pulled off a superb away win at title favourites Peterborough in their opening league fixture of

the season. Posh pressed straight from the off but the game evened out quickly as Oughtibridge put some great moves together which culminated in Bex Shaw being hauled down in the box, unfor-

tunately skipper Kathryn Mudge blasted her spot kick over the top. On the half hour Posh took the lead as Pendred fired in superbly from a half cleared corner to leave the WM Ladies with a mountain to climb.

But Mudge had other ideas and smashed in a 30-yard stunner to bring the sides level. This was quickly followed by another long range cross shot from Millie Kenyon to give them an interval lead.

The second half saw Posh press for a leveller but Oughtibridge remained disciplined throughout and could have stretched their lead but were happy to hold on for the three points.

LAWSON PUMPED FOR 2021

SHEFFIELD’S Richard Lawson says his silver medal in the British Final has only increased his desire for a successful 2021 season.

Said Lawson: “All my attention turns to regrouping and preparing for what hopefully will be a more ‘normal’ 2021 season. Fingers crossed.

Lawson won his opening three rides in some style at Belle Vue and breezed straight through to the final with 11-points.

“It was a great night for me. It’s bittersweet in a way to come so close and not pick up the win but all-in-all runner up isn’t bad at all so I’m happy.

But he wasn’t able to get the drop on eventual winner Rory Schlein, a product of Sheffield’s youth team almost 20 years ago.

“It was challenging out there. Early on it was quite sloppy and visibility was a real issue.

Starts were key and choice of racing line in the first corner was difficult but vital.

good shape so thankfully it all paid off in the end.

“The line-up was a mix of experience and youth. It’s really good to see that they’re all coming on good and willing to give everything they can to make it in the sport.

Another of Sheffield’s winter signings, Jack Holder, takes his place as wildcard in this weekend’s Grand Prix rounds in Torun.

“Ideally I could’ve done with a race under my belt before Monday but luckily I managed to get a few good practice sessions in which helped massively. I also kept myself in pretty

CHURCH BOUNCE BACK WITH 4-1 WIN PENISTONE Church had to bounce back after a 4-1 defeat at AFC Mansfield last Tuesday and do so in style, beating Bottesford Town by the same scoreline on Saturday. Charley Baird had given Church the lead against Mansfield but it all went wrong in the second half with a Ross Duggan brace, and strikes from Josh Wilde and Matthew Sykes condemning them to defeat.

Against Bottesford, Church had to wait for their opening and it was Sam Scrivens who gave them the lead on 35 minutes. Straight from the restart, Church doubled their advantage with Kieran Ryan finding the target. Jordan Coduri and Brett Lovell killed the game off with two goals in three minutes and Sam Gibson’s 72nd minute goal for Bottesford proved to only be a consolation.

Speaking after the Bottesford game, Church manager Ian Richards said: “On Tuesday it wasn’t a 4-1 performance but it was a 4-1 defeat, it wasn’t right. Today we went in at half time 2-0 up and I didn’t think we deserved to go in at 2-0, I thought the first 30 minutes we didn’t have the reaction we wanted, I think we were a little bit flat, playing a bit reserved maybe and some players lacked a bit of confidence until we got the goals.

“The two goals were first class, really good link-up and combination play by our attackers, midfielders and full backs high up the pitch, as we want to play and that released us a little bit. “We then played with a bit more quality, confidence, a bit more conviction and I thought up until our fourth goal we dominated the second half.”

Holder has enjoyed a stunning season in Poland and his inclusion came as no surprise. Round seven is on Friday with the deciding round the following night and both meetings are live on BT Sport.

STEELS EARN BRAGGING RIGHTS OVER LOCAL RIVALS AND EDGE SEVEN-GOAL THRILLER STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels picked up their first wins of the season this week, starting with a big 3-0 win over local rivals Sheffield FC before securing a 4-3 win over Lincoln United. The win against Sheffield was all down to an explosive first half display which saw Steels blitz their opponent with three fantastic goals. Josh Nodder curled home Stocksbridge’s first league goal after cutting in from the right of the pitch. Luke Mangham made it two shortly after with a smart turn and powerful shot which the Sheffield keeper couldn’t keep out. And the 400-capacity crowd were left stunned as Matthew Reay rose the highest to nod in from a corner at the end of the half. Then, on Saturday, Stocksbridge Park Steels were victorious on the road again with a 4-3 win at Lincoln United, largely thanks to a piece of fortune from a Lewis Whitham shot.

They took the lead through a fantastic header from Matthew Reay only to be pegged back by a penalty from Matthew Cotton. In the second half, Steels stretched out to a 3-1 lead due to an impressive brace from Joe Lumsden. But Lincoln battled and made it 3-3 with Cotton and Smith scoring. The winner eventually came from a Lewis Whitham shot which took a heavy deflection from a Lincoln defender before going in. Lincoln did press to try and get the equaliser but Stocksbridge held on and almost bagged again from a counter, only for Johnny Pugh’s shot to be deflected over. After a flurry of late corners from Lincoln came to nothing, the full time whistle was blown and the Steels escaped with all three points. On Tuesday October 13, Steels face Belper Town at the Eco-Power Stadium. Kick off is at 7.45pm.
